T

here are three words that come up in industry discussion time and time again: timeless, sustainable and trend. But what value do these words really hold? Let’s start with timeless – how can a product really guarantee its appeal to the consumer of the future? One iconic design component that continues to stand the test of time is fabric pattern. In this month’s issue, Vescom demonstrates how fabric rollers created for the 1920s interior still fit perfectly within contemporary schemes, nearly a century later. Read how these antique rollers are utilised within contemporary products on page 9. When it comes to sustainability, manufacturers prove themselves to the market with awards and certifications. One designer who was creating completely sustainable furniture long before sustainability was an integral industry term is Piet Hein Eek. He continues to take sustainability to new levels with a determination to ensure the production process itself creates no wasted materials. Read how his unique furniture designs have maintained popularity since the 1990s on page 22. Trend is arguably the most transient aspect of the interior industry, with forecasters and designers alike reading and researching evolving movements to predict the next big thing. Every issue of Inex offers expert advice so that you stay abreast of the trends, and this issue is packed full of guidance from across the industry. Highlights include wall colour insight from Farrow & Ball (page 28), kitchen design tips from Suna Interior Design (page 32) and a discussion into outdoor marble and stone furniture by After the Antique (page 18). 09 INSPIRE Vescom’s Lido and Silhouette embroider wallcovering and embossed velvet upholstery created using the gaufrage process

Clandestine operations Vescom - the wallcovering, upholstery and curtain fabric specialist - manufactures mohair for its fabrics at a mill in Holland, where they recently discovered something extraordinary hidden in the factory walls...

T

he same mill has manufactured mohair since before the Second World War. When the factory recently moved location they discovered 200 copper fabric rollers hidden in the walls of the mill. During the Second World War a multitude of metal objects were melted down as part of the war effort, but they were not always passed over willingly. These priceless rollers were concealed from the German army and remained undiscovered for nearly 70 years. Although the date of production is unknown, the Art Nouveau patterns of the mysterious cylinders suggest they were created in the 1920s and 1930s. Some patterns represent the days of art deco, others Louis XIV patterns of lilies and garlands. These rollers provide decoration for a myriad of style preferences – geometric to floral – and fit especially well within the recent art deco trends, used often in modern hospitality projects. How wonderful that

cylinders created for the interiors of a century ago are relevant and transferable to the contemporary interior. The process of applying the patterns to fabric, called gaufrage, takes place in three stages. This technique is one that has lost its popularity in recent years and Vescom is possibly one of the last companies in the world which still conducts this historical process in three parts. The production method is carried out by Vescom at its own weaving mill and uses original embossed designs including those from the unique copper rollers found in the mill

walls. Their addition to the roller collection creates classic designs with modern accents. The embossing of the pattern itself happens when the cylinder is heated by incredibly hot gas before the fabric is pulled between the rollers. The second stage is the ‘satinage’ where the fabric is then pressed through a full-flat cylinder creating a shine. The fabric is then wrapped into a flannel cloth and put into a kettle in a process called ‘decatisage’. With the help of steam and heat the molecular structure of the mohair yarn is changed meaning that the mohair does not rise. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Cut pile velvets can be made from many fibres such as silk or cotton, but Vescom uses 100% mohair because of its strength and lustrous texture. The company is known for constantly developing new products for its curtain, upholstery and wallcovering collections, emphasised by the Acoustic Sheer Curtain design being awarded the best of the best Red Dot Award in 2012. Vescom’s Industrial Designer Christiane Muller develops new patterns and surface designs, transforming ideas into reality. This year Vescom is launching the world’s first Bio-based high performance interior textile within the Xorel wallcovering collection. aft emerged 15 years ago when Mick was furnishing a property and struggled to source ethically produced furniture that expressed luxury design. Along with business partner Heinz Frye, Mick built a furniture brand which endeavours to provide highquality, long-lasting pieces with full provenance. Since beginning the company, Raft has attained the stringently upheld ‘FSC Chain of Custody’ certification, which means that every level of the supply chain, from sourcing to delivery, is checked for sustainable credentials. Raft is the largest retailer of FSC teak in the UK and produces its sofas in central London. The company is known for its pared back simple style which focuses on the natural beauty of reclaimed teak and for its luxurious bespoke

handmade British sofas. The brand’s uniqueness starts from the beginning of the manufacturing process as every material used is sourced because of its sustainable benefits. “We have a stringently monitored FSC Chain of Custody Certification, which means that every step of the process from sourcing to delivery is monitored for best practice,” explains Mick. “Our packaging is recycled and our accessories are fair trade where possible. We are also Solar Kiln drying our timbers, and sea freighting.” Sustainability is one of the cornerstones of the brand and Raft goes to great lengths to ensure that they are at the fore of eco-design. It is not led by trends, but instead focuses on eco-friendly ways to develop styles and designs. “We are always looking for ways

to improve,” continues Mick. “In the last year we have opened a factory, hand making all of our sofas in the UK. From the FSC approved reclaimed teak to handmade beautiful British sofas, we offer what I think are the best quality products, with exclusive design. What’s more, you can walk into any of our stores and be told exactly where your product has come from and how it is made, something which I am very proud of.” The definition of luxury is such a personal opinion in an industry full of differing styles and consequent preferences. “I believe luxury comes from the materials used,” explains Mick. “Be that the textiles you choose for your sofa, the throw you place on it or the wood that makes your table. It’s that extra touch of comfort. Our sofas are renowned for being especially deep and the cushions

very full and plump – even the filling is UK sourced – as we manufacture our own, we can play with these aspects to add that extra touch that make it a luxury piece and something people are excited to come home to.” For many, luxury is portrayed through the experience of the purchaser. Mick feels his biggest influence for Raft is his own experience as a customer: “The advice that I have most benefitted from is that you need to treat people with the respect they deserve. If I were asked to spend my money on something I would want to feel well informed, well looked after and that I was buying something that I would have for years to come and I want to make sure that this is what people get from Raft. I think that there is a real development in customer engagement in 2014.” Mick regards provenance to be a key influence for business. A big part of adhering to ethical practices is ensuring that the materials used are sourced exactly as they claim to be and the way to affirm trust is intertwined with the superb customer experience. “We have proven that you can have great design and excellent sustainable credentials, there really are no excuses,” delineates Mick. “The Raft look is very much my own sense of style and I am currently renovating my house with some of the new designs,” he continues. “I like simple, unfussy design with just a hint of colour. That means that I can add to it years from now.” Raft is not only diligent in choosing materials, but its business partners are too: “It’s key that they are as passionate about the brand and its ethics as we are,” explains Mick. Last year the company opened four new franchises around the country, taking the total to seven and it has more planned for this year, bucking the trend on the high street. raftfurniture.co.uk «

A classic example Stephen Parker, owner and founder of stone masonry specialist After the Antique discusses why handcrafted marble and stone furniture are making a comeback.

D

esigners, architects, builders and sculptors have chosen marble for their grandest projects since ancient times. Not so long ago marble and stone seemed dated, but interior and product designers are now returning to the beauty of natural materials. New developments in technology allow the exploration of marble and stone in completely different ways, where high-tech innovations such as laser and high pressure enable marble to be cut more precisely, thinner and with more curves. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Most recently natural stone, rather than cast stone, is making a comeback. Its charm grows with age, developing its natural patina and attracting lichen, which adds a touch of nostalgia to the focal point. An advantage of using marble or stone for exterior tables is that they are designed to withstand the most extreme climates without distorting or cracking. Sets of marble or stone tables are now replacing wood for outdoor terraces and patio gardens. Stone firepit sets are another hot trend – some designs even have an interchangeable centre section to create a more versatile piece, for example some incorporate an ice bucket for chilling drinks. Softer and less formal than white marble, stone or travertine might be more practical and adaptable. Travertine seems to be in the lead as it is versatile and

warm, as well as looking equally smart in a traditional scheme as in a contemporary environment. Trends are moving away from strict minimalism and returning to designs inspired by the past. Classical design will last for an eternity, while ‘of the moment’ fashion soon loses its edge. A neoclassical fountain should always follow the correct proportions, as set by the architects of ancient Greece and Rome, still revered, copied around the world, and never surpassed. A company making bespoke fountains or urns

should always visit the project site, to ensure perfect balance and symmetry. In the hustle and bustle of modern life a fountain can bring tranquillity, drowning out traffic and street sounds. “A classically inspired fountain is the perfect choice for a walled garden in a Georgian terrace house,” says designer Clare Agnew, Chelsea Flower Show award winner for a garden in collaboration with Savills, leading estate agents, which included a pavilion in neo-classical style. Stone pavilions or temples make an impressive addition to a swimming pool, regardless of location. When choosing statuary, it should work in close harmony with the overall style and dimensions of the home and garden. Plan the statuary by imagining the statue as a blank wall. Placing it

in this context will enhance the arrangement of trees, shrubs and flowers. Sound advice is to keep it simple. Even one piece will create a presence and a focal point. Each part of the garden may have a different mood or feeling – as in the rooms of a house – and each space can be embellished by its own piece of sculpture, perhaps a dramatic figure with a background of bold foliage, the quirky note of a stone pig in a vegetable patch, or a rustic stone bench among the flowers and grasses of a planned ‘wilderness.’ Together with a current trend for romantic statuary, the imaginary ‘architectural ruin’, and a use of sculptural boulders of natural rock and stone, comes the advance of new technology. Pieces inspired by the past will be given extra impact highlighted by LED and solar lighting. LED is ideal for use with

solar and allows a creative use of colours to produce the magic of a stage set. On a practical note, along with aesthetic guidelines, it is crucial to make a solid concrete foundation to support a fine statue – make sure this is set about an inch below grass level. Marble and any open textured stone ornaments should always be covered in freezing conditions as water will expand and damage the piece. As a golden rule for garden statuary, fountains and urns, every piece should belong to a specific site in a particular garden and this perception applies as much to embellishing a small garden with an urn the same as an avenue of sculpture in the park of a stately palace. As Barbara Hepworth once said: “sculpture grows in the open light, its aspect is always changing.” aftertheantique.com «

Rise from the trashes Inex unveils the greatest iconic furniture accessories still prevalent in today’s design world – all thanks to a little contemporary twist. This month, we present unique furniture made from luxury waste materials.

T

he creation of luxury furniture inevitably means expensive materials, however this luxury price tag often means that material offcuts are too costly to be made use of. Excess materials are of course not worthless, but repeatedly can’t be used because the cost of this skilled labour needed is too expensive. Annoyed with having to throw away materials purely because they were too expensive to do anything with, Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek has been producing an entire line of furniture that is made entirely

INEX-ONLINE.COM

from luxury offcuts long before sustainability was the hot topic that it is today. The creation of these unique products take not only a huge amount of patience at a time when this is a rare commodity, but also leave behind their own waste materials. This ‘waste from waste’ motivated the designer to take the process even further by employing a fixed block size of 40 x 40mm. This means that all the waste materials used are made to a size of 40 x 40mm before being used to form the furniture piece. This size, combined with the decision to use

the materials solely as an outer skin instead of stacking them, defines the appearance of the Waste waste 40 x 40 collection. The end result is a unique piece of furniture that looks like intricate rustic artwork where each 40 x 40 piece of the jigsaw holds its own individuality. Straight-edged shapes are formed which are, of course, always a multiple of 40mm, even for the circular tables, which are not in fact round. This process allows for a variety of items, from benches to dining tables meaning that this versatile collection not only embodies fantastic sustainable credentials, but is also a fun and timeless addition to both domestic and contract projects. Piet Hein Eek’s collection of

limited work – which includes a range of furniture created from a variety of ‘worthless’ materials – is a portfolio of products that aren’t mass-produced, but instead are unique and formed from waste material from both the industry and nature itself. “The materials we use are uncommon and modifying,” he explains. “Because of this, products arise that surprise me too. I would never have come up with the treetrunk chair, if I had designed from my traditional sense of beauty. Although this chair didn’t come from this, it does appeal to it. Therefore the self initiated work also serves to shake off my own truths and shift my boundaries.” pietheineek.com «

he interior of Ember Yard has been designed inhouse and is influenced by both art nouveau and art deco styles, as well as Frank Lloyd Wright and warm natural materials. Low-hanging lights, exposed beams and wooden tables give a rustic edge to this new addition to the Salt Yard Group of restaurants. The use of natural materials like wood, brass, copper and steel blend seamlessly with stained glass and polished plaster, while the open plan kitchen and custom-built grill are at the heart of the space. Simon explains: “We had the idea for this restaurant several years ago and are thrilled to see it finally come to fruition. There’s something primal about the method and flavours of cooking over charcoal and Ember Yard will be a unique and exciting take on this back to basics approach.” A selection of antique light fittings and mirrors, bespoke stained glass, metal work and Above left: A friend of Salt Yard Group co-founder Simon Mullins created the colourful triptych oil painting of a vineyard for the ground floor area of the new restaurant. reclaimed materials have all been used. Simon commissioned an artist friend to paint a triptych oil painting of a scene from a vineyard to use as a backdrop to the ground floor restaurant area. The same artist painted pictures of pigs which adorn walls in the private dining room and in the kitchen. The stylish design continues downstairs, where guests can enjoy a meal on the banquette by the exposed wine vaults or cosy away in the private dining area that can accommodate up to 20. Downstairs also houses the basement bar where customers can enjoy a pre- or post-meal cocktail, with stools at the bar to watch the cocktail making and charcuterie preparation take place. Chef Director Ben Tish has devised a menu that is almost entirely cooked on a custom built charcoal fired grill which serves as the centre piece of the open plan kitchen. The team also hot and cold smoke a number of ingredients on site and flavour items using different types of wood (including Sherry barrel). “The food, decor and service have all been very well received, with notable compliments on the design too,” continues Simon. The design very much reflects the Soho location and the addition of a cocktail bar makes for a social and on-trend experience. Salt Yard group was set up by Simon Mullins and Sanja Morris in 2005 with the opening of Salt Yard in Fitzovia. With backgrounds in the public sector and advertising respectively, they relied on their knowledge of eating out around Spain and Italy to inspire their concept of a small restaurant serving dishes to share. Since then they have been joined by head chef Ben Tish and have opened a further three restaurants all specialising in Italian and Spanish charcuterie, cheese and small dishes. Although all four restaurants are different in style, atmosphere and menu, unification and harmony prevails. saltyard.co.uk « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Pass with flying colours

Nothing has the power to change the ambience of a room quite like a change in palette and nothing changes as often in the interior market as the colour of the moment. It is no surprise, therefore, that trend forecasters and interior designers alike constantly look ahead for the next big hue. This can, however, distract from using the colour that best suits the space itself. Sarah Cole, Marketing Director at Farrow & Ball, advises how to bring choosing wall colour back to basics. INEX-ONLINE.COM

B

efore you begin decorating you need to consider the architecture of the room – the shape, features, period as well as the direction of light as these can all affect the colours you choose and use. The other key point to consider is how you want the room to feel. Do you want to create a warm and cosy space or a bright and vibrant room? How much time is to be spent in the room and what it will be used for will play a big part when choosing different shades. Colour trends, rather like fashion, are always changing

with new tones coming along and old colours becoming popular again. For the New Year, instead of picking just one colour, Farrow & Ball decided to give a choice of four – Cooking Apple Green, Mole’s Breath, Purbeck Stone and Stiffkey Blue. and the enduring appeal of the seemingly more organic, folkloric customs of the past. This year pair this colour with red accents, a look reflected in many Romany garments and caravans. The strength of a deep blue will create a fashionable dramatic interior, contemporary and relaxed, so perfect for use in both urban and country settings. For a moody feel, use this colour in isolation and small spaces, with white on the ceilings, or, for a more light hearted feel, use on a feature wall in combination with light blue or a INEX-ONLINE.COM

plaster pink. Soft gray tones are great for creating the popular layered Gustavian feel. Combine this colour with two lighter off-white shades to create a colour combination which will flow throughout the home, like the image on the previous page using Farrow & Ball’s Purbeck Stone walls, Cornforth White woodwork and Ammonite on the floor. A strong drab is always popular and feels like an old friend. It can be used to slightly soften the most contemporary of architectural settings alongside glass and steel.

This colour works really well when used on walls and woodwork, with white ceilings, creating the most beautiful play of shadow and light. Alternatively, use as a background colour, brought to life with accent colours like a statement yellow or an off black. The real key when choosing colour, is to choose a colour you love! Maintaining timeless appeal The source of sustenance, the location loved at parties, the heart of the home – the kitchen is arguably the most functional room in the home, a dialogue between storage, appliance and lighting. You would assume that the centre of the home would also be the most personal, yet no other space has such a defined structure and format, or is more difficult – and potentially costly – to change. his leaves a difficult task for the interior designer, as the kitchen must embody longevity and versatility to reflect both client preference and evolving trends. Where better to seek advice than from an established designer who creates interiors for big developments where the kitchen is one of the only structured areas of a new home.

Helen Fewster is the co-director of Suna Interior Design which has applied the latest kitchen trends into its design for central London developer Mount Anvil’s newest project, The Filaments. The studio has created a collection of designs echoing the location and clientele who will call these apartments home. This both dictates and ensures a mix of individuality and style and the end result are

kitchens that demonstrate a combined reflection of the best of contemporary design today. Based in the vibrant London borough of Wandsworth, The Filaments boast kitchens that combine beautiful form with impressive function to appeal to Mount Anvil’s design-savvy young buyers. appliances embody a sleek appearance whilst the use of a timber laminate on the splashback add texture, warmth and a touch of quirky character to the design. “Open plan living is central to modern lifestyle and to achieve this in style, the kitchen needs to be presented as a beautiful piece of furniture in its own right,” explains Helen. “At The Filaments, this is accomplished through aesthetic open shelving, finished with the same timber laminate as the splashback. of an old lighting factory, hence the name, and keeping light as an integral feature of the homes was key to retaining the personality of the development. The kitchen spaces are therefore flooded with natural light provided by floor-toceiling windows. “Kitchen design has recently favoured clean, sleek lines and this trend will continue to dominate this season, however a new intriguing touch of personality will also emerge to create a luxe, bespoke feel,” continues Helen. “These ‘touches’ may range from the use of one-off worktops, hand-painted cabinetry or unique handles. Clean lines with attractive attributes will

Caple wine fridges ensure the space is ready for entertaining. “The design of Mount Anvil’s kitchens at The Filaments encourages a flowing living space,” explains Helen. Berry appealing furniture trends Some of the most prolific home interior trends in recent years all descend from the daring fashion collections exhibited at fashion weeks across the globe. In just the last year we’ve seen tartan, monochrome and florals take over homes and high streets, and berry shades are no different.

B

erry colours are both exuberant and versatile, making them a perfect choice when it comes to home interiors. Known for adding warmth, they are particularly popular in autumn and winter when the weather takes a colder turn and nights draw in earlier, helping to create a more cosy and inviting living space. However, perhaps the most exciting aspect of the berry trend is the broad range of colours that fit under this umbrella term. From

the brighter raspberry tones to the more mysterious burgundies, and everything in between, the fantastic spectrum of colour allows you to incorporate the trend with individual flair. Vivid berry colours, such as pastel pinks and vibrant reds, are a great choice for accessories, effortlessly complementing a variety of other colours including greys, blues and greens. This co-ordination enables you to add softer berry hues as a way of introducing a pop of colour, without having to change your whole existing decor. Adding the berry colour trend in small bursts is also a fantastic way to test the water, before committing to a more permanent piece. In contrast for those of you feeling braver, deep mulberry and burgundy tones make a dramatic impact

when used as a focal point in the room, for example in a sofa or statement headboard. Though commonly associated with the festive period, these rich jewel tones also exude elegance and sophistication making it the perfect way to add a touch of luxury to your interiors year round. Particularly on-trend is the use of a statement berry piece of furniture against a more neutral wall, allowing the stunning colours to really stand out for your centrepiece room.

Alternatively, using the berry colour trend within your decor scheme can help to achieve an almost reverse colour pop effect. A feature wall in a rich berry shade, teamed with more neutral accessories, can also help to achieve the look, whilst those of you feeling extremely confident may wish to decorate an entire room using varying colours along the spectrum. Berry colours also work well when teamed with additional detailing, such as embellishments, or heavier fabrics, like velvet. These all add a subtle shine, providing an additional element of glamour and luxury to coincide with the berry colour scheme. As some trends can be incredibly transient, committing to a particular colour throughout a project

can be daunting. However, the repeated recurrence of the berry theme across interior designs, and indeed catwalks, instils confidence that these hues are here to stay. When it comes down to simplicity, berry colours are easy to incorporate, and with the varying shades within the palette available, it remains an ideal choice for interior designers and individual home decorators alike. whiteheaddesigns.com ÂŤ

entrance area an essential part of the design scheme, enabling it to reflect the values and purpose of the building, whilst reinforcing its corporate identity. Entrance area design is therefore being created ‘from the floor up’ with specifiers taking advantage of the increasingly bespoke capabilities of carpet manufacturers to help them realise their aspirations. A recent development is the ability to

customise entrance areas with branding and corporate messages within the carpet, which can reinforce the brand identity of the occupants and create a more professional image. A new Academy that has taken advantage of being able to do just that is Ormiston Venture Academy in Norfolk. Here, we created a distinctive new identity through a bespoke flooring design which incorporated the Academy’s logo

included over 2600m2 of Supacord fibre bonded carpet. Whilst bringing design to entrance areas is all important, these areas will also attract heavy volumes of traffic, which is why floorcoverings needs to be carefully

selected to ensure durability and safety. Here there is the potential for incidents of slips, trips and falls, which are more likely to occur when conditions are wet or icy outside and the user first comes into contact with the floorcovering. Specialist entrance area carpet is being widely specified as it absorbs dirt, debris and moisture that is brought in on shoes and acts as a barrier to prevent these kinds of accidents. Some carpet manufacturers have innovated in this area and certain types of entrance area, including fibre bonded carpet, act as an interceptor that actually cleans shoes of grit and moisture. It is a well known fact that choosing the right entrance area product can help to maintain the long term appearance of a carpet and prolong its lifespan significantly, which is why it is worth factoring into the scheme at the outset. Building designers often consider the ground conditions adjacent to the building, such as will visitors step from a grit or potentially muddy surface onto the entrance area and if so, could this cause additional damage to a floorcovering. In these cases, fibre bonded carpet, which is robust and has proven to be able to remove shoeborne dirt and moisture, is proving a compelling choice. For building owners to achieve the best value out of their floorcoverings, careful choice of entrance area carpet is essential. Entrance area design is a trend that looks set to stay – both for commercial and public sector projects – where creating the right impression and setting the tone for the rest of the building is vitally important. Today we have the best of both worlds – carpet with the ability to create striking designs, but that offers the functional benefits of being able to intercept dirt and provide owners with the best possible opportunity to extend the lifespan of floorcoverings. heckmondwike-fb.co.uk «

The seminar series will delve into the industry from many different angles, from design to e-commerce, providing something for everyone across the four day event. Highlights include Hannah Malein from Global Color Research, who will be giving a seminar which will examine ‘Key colour & material trends for Autumn/Winter 2014/15’, and John Lennon of PWS, who will be giving an independent focussed seminar entitled ‘How to maintain market share and grow your business as an independent specialist’. Of course, the main attraction at kbb Birmingham will always be the exhibitor line-up. The 2014 edition certainly does not disappoint, with many new names joining old favourites for the four day event. Bathroom giant Ideal Standard will return to the show for the first time in a decade, and will be launching numerous product ranges to boot. British Ceramic Tile is another brand that will be making its kbb Birmingham debut, alongside bathroom specialist Saneux and kitchen expert Rotpunkt. Returning to the show will be a smorgasbord of favourites including Franke, Caple, JJO and Blum.

On top of this, kbb Birmingham will this year be hosting its largest ever number of overseas exhibitors, proving that the show is fast becoming a very important event on the international calendar. Flying the flag for Europe will be Samet, Xey and Leicht to name but a few. Andrew Vaughan, Brand Director at kbb Birmingham, is pleased to see such a wide range of exhibitors join the 2014 line-up. “We are delighted that this year’s show will represent such a diverse range of exhibitors, right through from home -grown talent to much-loved European brands that we have all become accustomed to,” he says. “I think it is clear to see the economy in the UK is picking up!” www.kbb.co.uk «

norament 926 Satura

Kährs has introduced three new wood floor designs to its Artisan Collection. Reflecting the collection’s rustic signature look, each design has an on-trend surface finish, which is complemented by the timber’s gnarled and knotty character. All floors are crafted in Sweden from sustainable European oak and feature Kährs multi-award winning eco-construction. Kährs Artisan Collection includes 10 designs, which each have a wide plank format and individual surface treatments. New Kährs Oak Concrete has a grey-tinged natural oil finish, whilst Kährs Oak Saw Brown and Oak Saw White provide light and dark colour options; in a pale beige-white hue and rich conker tone. All three designs have a tactile handscraped and brushed surface and distinct bevelled edge. Kährs Oak Saw Brown and White are also finished with saw marks to give an authentic, distressed look. kahrs.com

Developed in collaboration with international architects and designers, the norament 926 satura rubber floorcovering from nora systems offers two worlds of colour for every desired spatial effect. Comfortfloor creates white recording studio

For the creation of an acoustically designed live recording studio in an old Victorian building in Edinburgh, a continuous white flooring system was required throughout the entire ground floor. Meeting the stringent acoustic, aesthetic and durability requirements, ComfortFloor Pro – a seamless, liquid applied flooring system from Sika – fitted the bill perfectly. “I had chosen white resin flooring for the ground floor early in the design stages. In combining my love of design and interiors with music I wanted to create a very clean and versatile space for musicians to work in. I loved the idea of resin flooring because of the tactile yet hard wearing nature of it. It is perfect for a recording space and its slightly reflective quality creates a relaxing feel,” comments Fiona McNab, Owner, Tape Studio. sika.co.uk
