ast month I was overwhelmed by the number of interior specialists and furniture manufacturers that chose to make charitable donations instead of sending Christmas cards. What a wonderful way to spread seasonal cheer aside from the consumerism that surrounds the festive season. It seems business today isn’t just about product and profit – the focus on ethical production and the ethos behind sourcing sustainable materials are certainly on the rise in the industry. Sibley Grove is an interior design studio that became frustrated with the products available to them. Faced with not wanting to use products they couldn’t condone, the team decided to launch their own line of ethically-produced furniture. Read about their advances to encourage social change through interior design on page 9. Another obstacle for sustainability is to inspire manufacturers themselves to discourage disposing of furniture purely because it doesn’t match current trends. Some furniture companies have shifted their attitudes towards production and now act to arouse change. Mr McQueen is one example of a company that encourages a green approach to interior design through revamping a project’s existing furniture. Read how it does this on page 12. Designs that initiate social change
The Single Fold Lampshade is made from stone paper, which is durable and waterproof, as well as non-toxic and compostable.
Kate Sibley and Jeremy Grove are the husband and wife team behind Sibley Grove, an interior design studio based in South East London. The studio has built a reputation for producing stylish, high quality interiors that embrace sustainable materials and encourage social change through design.
T
he studio philosophy when approaching every project is simple – to make things better. For most designers this could mean improving the quality, value for money, detailing or styling, however for Sibley Grove this also means ensuring those making the products are paid an appropriate wage and the materials have been sustainably sourced. “Every project should be an opportunity to embrace new materials, new ideas and new philosophies. Designers can often be guilty of replicating and tweaking, rather than creating,” explains Jeremy. After struggling to find products for their interior design projects that were produced in a way
they could condone, Sibley Grove set themselves a new challenge: to design and produce beautiful and affordable furniture in a way that does not exploit people or damage the environment. Their three debut pieces – The Single Fold Lampshade, The Butler bar stool and The Barley sofa – are all examples of products made in London that are produced sustainably and ethically. In order to design furniture within these parameters there were a number of challenges to overcome, but none more difficult than cost. The typical approach to manufacturing, that targets a large consumer base is to drive cost down to enhance competitiveness and increase profit margins. While these are obviously acceptable goals, Sibley Grove believe it is not acceptable to compromise the surrounding environment or exploit large numbers of workers in order to achieve this. Jeremy has first hand experience of manufacturing around the world, regularly visiting factories in the Far East, Middle East and Europe. “In some of the factories we have visited in the Far East, skilled workers are paid as little as 200 dollars a month,” continues Jeremy.
While it is easy to condemn this way of manufacturing, the public needs to be aware that the price of a remarkably cheap coffee table or sofa is almost certainly a result of underpaid labour, dangerous manufacturing conditions and/or dubious materials. “The relentless pursuit of the bottom line has created a culture where the consumer has a false sense of value,” explains Kate. “Manufacturers created this but the consumers are maintaining it.” It is important to realise that environmental and social issues are not limited to the cheaper end of the furniture market as mid-highend furniture is often produced in exactly the same factories. Ethically produced items are often priced so highly that they only target a niche INEX-ONLINE.COM
10 INSPIRE
market. The real solution lies in creating a system where consumers at all price levels have access to sustainably produced products. Many of the materials used in furniture production are highly toxic, in particular the fabric and foams used in upholstery. The petro-chemical foams widely used in armchairs and sofas are highly flammable and require fire treating, which is toxic itself. When in the home, this contributes to poor air quality where there are links to respiratory conditions and other health issues. It concerns Kate and Jeremy that the people machining and working with these materials on a daily basis work in poorly equipped factories with insufficient extraction and protection. Furthermore, these materials can only be disposed of in landfill where toxic chemicals leach into the soil and water creating INEX-ONLINE.COM
problems for local communities. Referencing the Cradle to Cradle approach to design, Jeremy says: “Simply recycling a product is not enough if that new product ultimately ends up in landfill. We must embrace materials that can be turned into new exciting products or can be disposed of harmlessly. This principle is relevant whether a product lasts for one day or 100 years.” Sibley Grove believe that designers are the solution but that companies need to be willing to invest in ethical design. Whilst reducing production costs, companies are also guilty of excessively pushing down design fees. As a result designers have limited time available and naturally gravitate towards known methods rather than embracing the unknown. Though Sibley Grove have
Image: Jeremy Grove with Sibley Grove’s ethical design, The Butler.
been able to design a small range of products that address a large number of these issues, they are keen to point out that this is an ongoing process. The key is to understand and set the core principles and then use this as a base for design. Every project should be an opportunity to embrace new materials, ideas and philosophies. Despite Sibley Grove opting to manufacture in London, they do not believe that a sustainable solution is about local manufacture alone. “‘Local’ is in fashion at the moment, and while this is positive and shows local awareness of environmental issues, fashions and trends pass,” states Kate. “We need to implement a lasting change, which will involve changes to infrastructure around the world.” www.sibleygrove.com «

Upholstering philanthropy Those that religiously separate their rubbish, are careful to buy fairtrade food, cosmetics and even clothing, might be unaware that the furniture they sit on is also a part of the environmental impact. There are a growing number of luxury furniture specialists that are turning to producing ethically sourced products, reducing environmental impact and also giving something back to the community. Pete Murtha is a pioneer for ethical furniture production and a charitable approach to profit. Inex’s Emily Smith spoke to him about what design means to him and his new furniture company, Mr McQueen, which takes a more humane approach to furniture production. “I moved to Birmingham having sold all my worldly possessions and was looking for a new sofa when I was introduced to a workshop in the Black Country where Richard Jones was creating luxury handmade furniture. I was blown away with the quality of his craftsmanship. I was disheartened when he spoke of the temptation to ‘throw in the towel’ because of the struggle to compete with Chinese imports and the likes of Ikea. I persuaded him that with investment, rebranding and the right marketing we could turn his struggling business into a thriving luxury brand. And so Mr McQueen was born. The name conjured up to me British craftsmanship and was sentimental for me as the last film I watched with my Mum, Patricia, before she died was Disney’s Cars, so the name Lightning McQueen stayed with me!” How would you define the company’s signature style? “Think Louboutins… as furniture! All our pieces carry the unique red velvet underneath and our hand-stamped silver logo reveals the name of the master craftsman who made that piece. We are also able to add unique contemporary twists to individual pieces, such as illuminating a sofa by incorporating LED lighting into the design.” What do you believe to be the most important aspect of creating a luxury interior environment? “Comfort! We are a luxury brand but are also affordable INEX-ONLINE.COM

for the hospitality market. Too often furniture designs are all about look rather than comfort and practicality.” How does Mr McQueen approach sustainability? “Our ethos is to reuse and recycle wherever we can. We have developed the concept of ‘McQueening’ where we reupholster a client’s existing furniture in our unique style. This is proving very popular in hotels and bars where the client chooses to simply revamp the décor rather INEX-ONLINE.COM
than throw away good furniture. It also widens our client-base as one can own a piece of Mr McQueen without buying a brand new piece. We can recycle up to 70 per cent of furniture, which is great for reducing environmental impact as we avoid the use of new wood.” How does Mr McQueen support charity and what inspired this? “The whole concept of Mr McQueen is the charity work we do. I have always been a massive supporter of charity through my other business; a hair replacement company called
Optima. It was through creating wigs for children that had lost their hair that I learned about the palliative care unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. This was the foundation for the focus for our fundraising. “Five per cent of all our profits go directly to the end of life care ward for life-limited children at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, which is a major driving force for our brand and our dreams of success. Our aim is to raise £1 million in five years to build a house on the grounds of the hospital for the families of terminally ill children to spend their last precious weeks together. We are currently working to create a Rainbow Room for the parents of terminally ill children to seek some comfortable solace and privacy when preparing for the traumatic circumstances facing them. Nothing can take away the pain but at least we can provide them with a

comfortable environment to have some time alone.” What are your biggest design influences? “I love the classic look, such as deep buttoned sofas, but with a hip and trendy twist with unusual fabrics and colours. I love purples and silver but also the use of bright colours, such as orange or pink. “We work with some of the finest interior designers in the country who keep us abreast of the latest trends and influences. I have always adored the arts and love to view furniture as art. We aim to make statement pieces and see furniture not just as a useable object but also something to be admired in its own right, just like a piece of art.” What can we look forward to from Mr McQueen? “We are currently working with Marco Pierre White restaurants to showcase our furniture for his new look eateries. We are also working with the Hotel Indigo chain and have been given a great new display space in the trendy Cube complex in Birmingham. Mr McQueen are currently working on a couple of nightclubs in the North East and creating some really luxurious pieces for several multi-million pound apartments in Kensington – not bad for a new company! The hotel industry is really embracing us.” Finally, which piece of career advice have you benefitted most from? “I have met some really inspiring business people over the years and they have all given me the same advice – follow your dreams, believe in what you do and through this you can achieve success. No matter what obstacles get in your way, if you believe you can succeed and you keep going, then you will!” mrmcqueen.co.uk «

Its success was a perfect indicator of the truly international nature of the SBID Awards. This year’s winners included entries from the UK, America, Australia, Iceland, Qatar, Italy, China, Switzerland, Turkey and the Netherlands. Vanessa Brady, President of SBID, said: “The SBID Awards are now firmly established as a key event in the global interior design calendar. This year we had just under 400 entries from creative professionals and companies around the world, a record number. The task for the judges was difficult, but it was inspiring to see so much talent and creativity.” The 14 SBID International Design Award 2013 categories are split between Residential and Contract sectors. Entries in each category underwent a two-tier judging process. A panel of industry experts looked at both the technical content and aesthetic creativity. The Awards were judged by international industry leaders, including Tony Hall, Director General of the BBC, who agreed to be this year’s guest judge. The
panel also included Nicholas Candy, CEO and Founder, Candy & Candy Design; Theo Williams, Head of Design at John Lewis; Tony Ash, Managing Director for UK and Middle East, Vitra and David Lewis, Managing Director of Sunseeker London. For the first time in the history of the SBID Awards, the public was given a say in deciding the winners. People were able vote for their favourite project among the finalists, via the SBID Awards website. All the votes were counted and, alongside the choices of the judges, used to decide the overall winners in each category. The winners each received a beautiful SBID International Award trophy, commissioned from the Czech company Sans Souci Glass Deco. Creativity has a mind of its zone Colour zoning has the ability to alter moods and add versatility to commercial spaces. Amy Farn, Concept Designer at Interface, talks about the benefits of getting creative with flooring design.

ntelligent flooring design can unlock a world of potential when it comes to open plan spaces. Well thought out, creative flooring can transform a sterile, unproductive space into a vibrant, inspiring environment that encourages interaction and creates a bustling atmosphere. Due to the fast pace of the modern worker, and the increasing need to connect with technology and colleagues, it is important that workplace design is intuitive as well as creative. To a designer, open plan space is a canvas for ultimate design creativity, but in many cases multi-functional spaces, such as office environments, can be a space of clutter and misdirection. Designers should therefore consider that not everyone needs the same type of space, and create a flooring design that encourages flexible, collaborative
team working, as well as areas for focused individual work, by defining areas of a room without the need for additional furniture. Creating a ‘space within a space’ through flooring can be achieved by ‘zoning’. Using different colours, patterns and textures of carpet tiles, to divide and highlight certain areas without the need for walls or barriers can help to maintain a more open, dynamic, and practical environment. Zoning gives designers the freedom to add a splash of colour and texture to a space. For more subtle designs, carpet tiles can be chosen in complementary shades to delicately define areas of a room, whereas bolder, clashing colours can add fun to an environment and create statement features or areas of focus within a space. For high impact zones, designers can also get creative

with installation patterns, to create contrasting environments. Monolithic installation methods for example, can often give a more modern and professional appearance, whereas nondirectional methods can be more suited to laid back areas such as break out or communal spaces and walkways. Areas can also be defined by using contrasting carpet tile shapes. For example, Interface has created Planks, rectangular carpet tiles that can be used with square tiles to add texture into the design. As well as creating original, creative designs, zoning offers a practical and cost effective flooring solution. As with most multifunctional environments, over time, areas can change in size or cease to be of use. Glueless installation systems, such as TacTiles by carpet tile manufacture, Interface, are a

more flexible alternative to spread adhesives and can allow carpet tiles to be easily removed and relayed for maximum flexibility in design. These are small adhesive squares that can be placed in the corners of each carpet tile to seamlessly connect each tile, rather than sticking to the subfloor, creating a secure floating surface that won’t cause any permanent damage. This allows individual carpet tiles to be lifted and replaced with new or existing tiles from elsewhere in the building quickly and easily, to reflect the changing needs of the end user without the need for adhesives, which can save the end user time and money. The latest product developments in the flooring industry offer a broad spectrum of design opportunities that can help designers deliver attractive, unique and practical solutions in open plan spaces. With both practical and aesthetic benefits, zoning has the power to completely transform a room. interfaceflor.co.uk INEX-ONLINE.COM

uke Irwin set up his first rug design business in 2003, following a chance meeting with the son of a master Tibetan weaver at a family party which inspired him to enter the rug trade. He quickly built up a strong reputation in the interiors world with his unique eye for pattern, garnering him a loyal client base of top designers, architects, private clients and retailers – Barack Obama and Prince Charles being among them! “2014 will definitely be a year of pattern rather than abstraction and hopefully that form will be many and varied,” explains Luke. “The initial reason for my new collection, Tarantella, was that I had previously created an Ikat collection and a very abstract collection based on clouds and wet plasterwork, so I wanted to try something that was fundamentally European. I had the great fortune to chance upon a very, very rare book from 1876 that is a study of the Peasant Art of Italy. It is beautiful and every design in the Tatentella collection is based on one of those original peasant designs, whether it was a milking stool or a bedspread.” The designs are a celebration of Italian regional peasant textile design and the traditional Neapolitan folk dance of the same name. Each rug is named after a Saint to reflect the religious subjects that dominated many of the decorative manifestations from this period in Italian history. Luke’s rug designs are utterly bespoke and hand-knotted to order, with different varieties of silk and linen that allow versatility INEX-ONLINE.COM
in tone, pattern and texture. Because of this unique depth, the rug can complement a variety of accompanying furnishings and décor. “Rugs are the canvas upon which everything else in a room is laid,” continues Luke. “Through the use of different colours you can make an interior as brash or as subtle as you like. This collection has already been paired with very diverse furniture from Louis XV canapé to Mies van der Rohe to Promermoria and B&B Italia. The point of these designs is that they are not fashion led. To me there is no such thing as bad or wrong taste, as we are all individuals. “As absurd as it may sound, I think an interior is a living organism that changes and grows over time. An individual’s taste changes as they become more confident and sophisticated. For me, the perfect interior has a controlled mix of everything rather than being exclusively one style. If you care about trends and fashion then you will always be following them not leading them.” www.lukeirwin.com « Far right: Luke Irwin is an awardwinning rug designer who specialises in the design and creation of bespoke, hand-knotted rugs. Copper baths take centre stage William Holland, bespoke manufacturer of freestanding copper baths, basins and brassware, explain why freestanding baths are the ultimate in home decadence, and why copper is undoubtedly the new ‘star of the show’.
W
ith the growing trend for boutique culture, and a desire to recreate the romantic spa experience within the comfort of home, freestanding baths are experiencing a resurgence. More than just necessity, bathing has become synonymous with luxury and relaxation, transporting the humble bathroom from the world of functionality to the realm of sanctuary and indulgence. With this move away from minimalist functionality to opulence, baths have now become the new signature piece in home design, for those wishing to combine practicality with comfort and aesthetic artistry. No longer are bathrooms relegated to the utilitarian, but elevated to the heights of pleasurable retreat. The freestanding baths of old, were predominantly cast iron. Durable and heat retentive they were the style choice of the quality conscious. However, notoriously heavy and slow to draw heat, in today’s contrasting world of INEX-ONLINE.COM

open plan designs, cosy period properties, and environmentally conscious clientele, for many situations the cast-iron bath has become simply too heavy and outdated to bear. Fuelled by the rise of vintage styling and nostalgic glamour, there has been a call for the traditional feel and aesthetic of the freestanding bath, yet free from the design limitations and restrictive qualities of iron. INEX-ONLINE.COM
Above: William Holland have overcome these design limitations by using the extraordinary properties of copper and harnessing all the additional luxury that modern technology can provide.
With high thermal conductivity, copper warms instantly, and maintains an ambient temperature. The malleability of copper also allows for a design versatility previously not possible with the restrictive qualities of cast iron. A range of curvaceous styles are now possible, from the romantic bateau, to the indulgent rotundus, perfect for ‘the spa at home’ trend, predicted as key for 2014.
Soft fluid shapes and sumptuous glamour are replacing the angular lines of the past, and design is centred on softness, warmth and calm. Copper baths are also available in an extensive range of finishes from verdigris to decadent gold. Or, for the more heritage look, there is an endless spectrum of enamels to choose from. baths have the versatility to turn design led inspirations into pure art. Copper is also highly durable, resulting in the creation of a bath that will last several lifetimes. Whereas cast-iron was prone to chipping, leading to expensive and complicated restorations, the copper bath is finished with a highgrade lacquer. Developed for the aviation industry, the finish is both durable and flexible, easily resisting
the rigours of daily use, and keeping the shine lustrous without any expensive or time consuming maintenance. Weighing an average 45kg, compared to the 160kg of its heavyweight cast iron counterpart, means that freestanding baths can now be used in renovations previously unsuitable due to weight restrictions. Copper is also fully recyclable meaning that copper baths are now

the sustainable product of choice for the environmentally aware. Freestanding Copper baths have fittingly combined the artistry of master craftsmen with modern innovation, creating a timeless and sophisticated centerpiece for both contemporary and period settings. If the Kitchen is the heart of the home, then the bathroom is now undoubtedly the soul. williamholland.com ÂŤ INEX-ONLINE.COM

he Atrium Champagne Bar is just one element of the magnificent ME Hotel. An elegant fusion of interior and exterior design, the scheme completes the grand sweep of buildings that make up London’s Aldwych Crescent, repairing the urban grain and restoring a little lost glamour to the heart of the West End. Everything in this hotel, from the shell of the building to the bathroom fittings, has been designed by the innovative architecture and integrated design practice Foster + Partners. Situated on the first floor, the winning bar design features a breathtaking nine-storey high cathedral-shaped, pyramid atrium clad entirely in white marble and with a skylight over 24 metres high. The interior concept fuses contemporary detailing with classical traditions, its dramatic monochrome palette a combination of rich textures and luxurious natural materials. The

experience draws on the idea of yin and yang, as guests move from dark to light spaces – the crisp white bedrooms are reached by reflective black marble corridors, sculpted by the angled walls of the central pyramid of the Atrium Champagne Bar. The light, white interior of the rooftop bar creates a relaxed environment and draws the focus outside, while onyx wall detailing and a bold black counter continue the hotel’s interior themes. Head of Design at Foster + Partners, David Nelson, commented: “Our intention has been to make sure that the hotel will be a unique experience, efficient to run and appropriate to the level of service that the ME hotel wishes to deliver. We put ourselves in the guests’ position to make sure that their experience would be exceptional – we made many changes to improve design and to stay within agreed budgets. The result combines a high level of functionality with a simple, refined aesthetic.” Giles Robinson, Partner at Foster + Partners, also commented: “By designing the hotel inside and out, down to the last detail, we were able to maintain a high level of quality and continuity. Inside, the bold black and white interior palette establishes a strong identity – we defined the individual character of each space through variations in tone, texture and scale. This commitment to quality throughout would not have been possible without the encouragement of our client and our shared goal to create an exceptional experience for guests.” The closing date for entries to the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards is 20th April 2014 with the awards ceremony being held in London in late September 2014. The charm of heritage pattern and texture
Heritage continues to be an important pattern inspiration for 2014 wallcovering and fabric design. Whether used as a small detail such as a cushion cover, or on a larger scale such as a statement wall, recognisable imagery and textures complement unified memories, ignite fond nostalgia and remain on-trend at a time when vintage and antique dĂŠcor prevails. offany’s Tespi collection transports to a place where the grandeur of Venice meets the charm of Umbria. Liz Cann, Design Director at Zoffany, explains how this new collection brings heritage pattern to the 21st century. A panoramic wallcovering of Venice provides the romantic backdrop for the collection which offers exquisitely sumptuous, yet contemporary, chic fabrics and wallcoverings. The collection is inspired by the creative legacy of Mariano Fortuny, a Spanish designer of stage, costume, textiles and fashion, who made the city of Venice his home. His work spans the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th Century and was influenced by Italian renaissance design. He often used motifs found in Middle Eastern dress, ceramics and architecture. The Zoffany studio based the collection on antique brocades, damasks, velvets and paisleys found in their archive and re-worked these using contemporary techniques such as foiling, digital printing and machine embroidery to capture the spirit of the original textiles. From the charm of naïve embroideries that appear hand stitched, to the faded opulence of once decadent velvety damasks, this collection of unique designs add charm and understated glamour to spaces, regardless of size. Well-chosen fabrics and wallpapers or good quality paint in a harmonious colour scheme can create a luxurious interior. Metallic accents and wallpapers with unusual effects such as foil painted or scatter beads (as seen in collections such as Tespi and Lexington) can really create a statement. For something a little less grandiose, interesting and luxurious textures ooze elegance. With the dawning of digitally printed technology, scenic wallpapers such as ‘The Gondolier’ from Tespi are becoming more popular. Velvets and Damasks saw INEX-ONLINE.COM

a surge in popularity in 2013, and will carry designers well in to 2014. We predict fresh spring painterly florals and tropical brights for the January collections. Good quality velvets in well-chosen colours can last the years, but it is also lovely to play with on-trend shades and colours that really catch your eye – if only for a short while! From its exclusive beginnings supplying historic wall coverings for private commissions to its current standing as an internationally renowned fabric and wallpaper house, Zoffany retains its commitment to the principles of quality, elegance and heritage. With its extensive range of wallpapers, fabrics, trimmings, paint, carpets and furniture, Zoffany continues to create fresh and innovative designs that offer a beautiful and sophisticated aesthetic for both contemporary and classic interiors. www.zoffany.com «
