Arazzi was born under the artistic direction of the Architect Marialaura Rossiello of Studio Irvine who explains: “It is a modular and geometric system with contemporary lines, inspired by the tapestries of textile art tradition; the real frame where the clay is ‘laid down’, thanks to the installing skill of Matteo Brioni. “The Arazzi collection is designed to cover the walls, through a modular system of panels to be composed to create your own personalised environment.

o Covet House, being the most powerful tool to inspire and to boost creativity, with more than 1700 products and 1300 inspirations from a midcentury to modern classic style, was the perfect match for the creative duo’s next project. Nadezhda and George met the owners of this property 10 years ago. The family with Russian roots decided to reinvent the house they bought in 1980s-1990s near New York and make it their permanent address, still reminiscent of the late 80s with a retro appeal, but still a very modern twist on the overall aesthetics. Trusting in the brands under the Covet House name like Boca Do Lobo, Delightfull, Brabbu, Koket, MAISON Valentina, Circu, Luxxu, Essential Home, Rug’Society, Pullcast and Foogo was best way to produce a luxury design interior that was both retro and classic but also contemporary. Imagined in blazing and unusual colours, the result was an amazing interior in vintage style with contemporary furniture. The mixture of pattern and materials, but especially the blend of different shapes – harsh and strict lines from the vintage furniture – batter completely with the shapeless and fluidity of the modern designs, creating an appealing and showstopping interior design.

It was important to make a statement with expressive walls through bright wallpapers, combine artistic and remarkable furniture and also outstanding and even provocative pieces of art. The first floor gathers a singular public area, which is a suite of rooms closed in a circle. On the second floor is a private area. There is one room for each child and a separate outhouse for the guests. The walls remained in the same place – the Ananievs did not move them, but completely cleaned the ‘stuffing’, leaving only the doors, as the designers found them really beautiful and in conformity with the concept. Known for its strength, intense and nature inspired upholstery, furniture, lighting and accessories, Brabbu brought to this remarkable project the MAYA armchair.

This saloon is the perfect climax between bright colours and the playful composition of modern classic style. The MAYA armchair was inspired by the Mayan civilization’s Goddess, providing a piece that, with the combination of the matte aged brass legs and the mustardyellow velvet, creates an intense addition to this saloon design. Complementing the vintage look are the masterful lighting pieces from Delightfull. With a beautiful and fresh take on the mid-century lighting design, heavily inspired by the art of the 40s throughout the late 80s, bringing the fresh classic lamps with the progress of colours and materials of modern decor. The colourful and extremely communicative graphic lamps, in various forms and shapes, from numbers to symbols, were used in this project both the “D” and “R” shapes. The letter “D” brought to the hall, was inspired by the vibrant Las Vegas feeling, bringing the fastpaced rhythm of the city into the interior decoration. And the “R” giving it a rustic appeal to this lighting piece, both retro yet modern. The Modern Classic style is one of the staples of Covet House designs, and this residential project shows how perfectly put together an interior can be by mixing retro with contemporary furniture. Covet House keeps offering the best curated design to the world with its brands and aims to inspire the world. www.covethouse.eu

Design

The hotel’s new design reflects Bullard’s Moroccan-inspired influence, with the midcentury aesthetic complementing perfectly with the desert’s everlasting allure. A rich, emerald green palette with deep blue tones accent the desert’s rose-pink backdrop on the reimagined exterior. The black, white and glass details set the design by bringing both mid-century and contemporary, modern-day style to life. Nods from the “Rat Pack” era are found throughout the property’s design with hints of glamour, luxury and decadence reinvented for the new generation. The rooms are appointed with Acqua di Parma bath essentials, Revival New York bed linens, signature Sonifi entertainment systems and fullsized in-room mini bars with top-of-the-line barware and stemware. Many of the rooms feature lush, palm tree lined views and private patios.

So tell us more about the Rakino collection?

Rakino is a collection of low lounge chairs that combines soft sculpted upholstery and CNC machined timber frames with an upright, somewhat architectural, attitude. The frame is all right angles and straight lines, apart from the back support rail, which is bowed slightly, as if formed by the act of leaning back in the chair. The seat, in contrast, is a soft, shell-like form with a crisp single seam running around its edge.

What inspired your designs?

This project started in what I believe is the ideal way; with a trip to see production, and this is what really inspired the design. In Hampshire I discovered a factory staffed by some serious experts in upholstery and timber joinery. I really wanted to make the most of these capabilities, and maybe even push them a little to see what was possible. In terms of the chairs themselves I wanted to create something that felt quiet and inviting, that could feel right in your home, while obviously being appropriate for hard working contract environments.

Did you enjoy collaborating with Morgan? How was the experience/process compared to solo working?

None of my projects are just me. I think that’s a misconception, maybe brought about by the fact that in our industry, designers tend to have eponymous business names. Everything I’ve ever designed has been made possible by numerous other people, from engineers to marketeers, craftspeople to logistics managers. I guess the main difference this time was geographical proximity – this is my first project with a British furniture brand. This meant we could work really closely, with numerous prototype reviews as we refined the details.

Benefits of this collaboration?

Working with Morgan’s dedicated prototyping team (Jonathan and Dean) was a highlight. This meant we were able to make adjustments and modifications to our prototypes, effectively on the spot – and nothing was impossible. The whole team were always keen to push the limits of timber production, and the results can be seen in a frame that perfectly blends CNC technology with expert craftsmanship, and an upholstery element that tapers to an impossibly fine edge, something not normally achievable with cut foam. I N E X

J U N E

6 4

As Morgan has a product code system that uses place names, it felt only right we choose a New Zealand name – being designed by a Kiwi, albeit London-based. Rakino is one of a cluster of small islands in the Hauraki gulf, the body of water surrounding Aucklands East coast, where people are able to escape the busy city, a short boat ride leaving you with a pleasant sense of isolation and calm. A comfortable low lounge chair in a busy hotel or workplace could, I hope, provide the same feeling.

he hotel’s main restaurant hadn’t been updated since the late 90s, so interior design practice Helen Casey Design Associates (HCDA) was called upon to bring the space into the 21st century. HCDA chose Gingham, a predefined colour and pattern combination from the Amtico Designers’ Choice collection. To complement the large space, the design was scaled-up, creating a look that is unique to the Tullamore Court Hotel. The resulting design is modern, tasteful and successfully reinvigorates the restaurant.

Eoghan ó Cathasaigh, Design Director at HCDA, explains why Amtico was specified: “The restaurant’s existing carpet and timber floors were extremely tired and well worn, so durability was a key factor when choosing its replacement. Amtico is known for its hardwearing products and I am confident that the flooring will easily stand up to this busy hotel’s requirements. “As the restaurant floor could not be raised, there were limitations with the flooring selection; to visually 7 2

separate the space it was essential the new flooring complemented and aligned with adjoining areas. “The diversity of Amtico’s designs led us to create a bespoke up-scaled look that is contemporary, fresh and airy and, importantly, in keeping with the overall character of the property.” Robert Kerbey, Owner and Director of LRK Flooring Systems Ltd, the company behind the installation, adds: “We have worked with Amtico before during many commercial installations, 7 3

F L O O R I N G

It was essential the new flooring complemented and aligned with adjoining areas

ranging from restaurants to nightclubs. For this project, the flooring design consisted of three different colours, which were laid to create a tartan-effect pattern. Amtico provided excellent instructions but it was vital that the first few lines of tiles were carefully laid and that the lines did not veer off, otherwise the pattern would not have been achieved. We would definitely use Amtico again; we prefer fitting Amtico to any other LVT.” www.amtico.com I N E X

SIMPLY ELEGANT

An award-winning artist with an international reputation, David Harber has been making contemporary and innovative sculptures, sundials and water features for over two decades. Here, INEX unveils his story and his most recent masterpiece.

S

ynonymous with elegance and simplicity, David Harber’s designs playfully incorporate light, water and reflections to create dramatic focal points in both exterior and interior settings. Each commission is hand made at the David Harber workshops in Oxfordshire and uses materials such as copper, bronze, stainless steel and stone. Since 1992, David has gained an impressive worldwide following, with his designs gracing private gardens and homes, hotels, corporate headquarters and Royal palaces around the world. Before discovering his passion for sundials, David began his working life as an apprentice thatcher, a potter and a mountaineer before converting a boat into a floating theatre in which he toured Europe for over eight years, receiving an accolade from Francois Mitterrand, the former French President.

Inspiring creativity

David’s first creative endeavour, the armillary sphere, was inspired by a meeting with a friend who was an antiques dealer and had brought back the time piece from France. David was captivated by the ancient mathematical and scientific principals used in the creation of the armillary sphere and spent his last £20 on the materials to create one himself. 7 5

G A R D E N

The sale of his first armillary sphere to Jeremy Irons signified the beginning of his career as a sculptor. His repertoire quickly expanded from sundials to sculptural designs. Free from the restrictions of latitude and longitude, he began experimenting with iconic water features and a variety of elegant and innovative sculptures. The company has since grown from strength to strength. Based in Oxfordshire, in the shadow of a Bronze-age hill fort, the studio is a hive of creative activity with over 30 employees including designers, engineers, craftsmen and installation experts. Drawing integrity from David’s commitment to using only the finest quality materials, his talented team practice time-honoured methods to bring his designs to life. David continues to have a handson approach, particularly with bespoke commissions, from attending initial site viewings, designing and manufacturing in the workshop right through to the installation.

Custom service

David Harber’s commissions extend far beyond the UK and he has made both customised and bespoke pieces for private, corporate and public body clients the world over with projects as far afield as Qatar, Singapore and U.S.A. Highlights of his career include undertaking many royal commissions around the world with his work being unveiled by HM Queen Elizabeth II, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Prince Charles. In April 2016, David Harber received a Queen’s Award for International Trade. He is also a six times winner of the RHS Chelsea Flower show Sundries Trophy, and has produced private commissions for a host of illustrious clients including Dame Judi Dench and George Michael.

Playful expression

David’s latest sculpture Steel Breeze is a vast sculpture that cleverly plays with the relationship between positive and negative space. Made from mirror polished stainless steel, two circular discs are positioned parallel to each other and laser cut in an elaborate pattern to reveal the space between them. The piece is encircled by an elegant band of antique tan patinated bronze. It comes with the interior mirror polished, but there is scope to customise it with internal lighting, by painting the inside or leaving it unpolished. Depending on customisation, the prices start at £8972 + VAT (inc. installation and delivery within UK mainland) for a 1.2m Steel Breeze. “Steel Breeze plays with the light, offering kaleidoscopic reflections of the environment around it. The name came from Pink Floyd lyrics and was inspired by the way the wind blows through the sculpture,” says David Harber. He added: “There’s a playfulness in the laser-cut patterns and in the repeating kaleidoscopic reflections. The piece has a lyrical and whimsical quality. What you see isn’t obvious – in fact, there’s an element of being lost in space and time when you view it. www.davidharber.com

arazzi, an international leader in the design and production of ceramic tiles, has opened a new showroom in Lyon. The location is at 117 avenue Jean Jaurès and is in one of the city’s most dynamic, culturally vibrant, trendiest areas, where all the leading international design and furnishing names represented in Lyon are concentrated. The space has been designed to give visitors – architects, interior designers, dealers or just consumers in search of inspiration – a full view of the many solutions in terms of materials and creative potentials available from the Marazzi brand, and also to accommodate the company’s offices. The showroom contains a large area dedicated to extra-large stoneware slabs, the technical zone with full information on collections and the materials library, a series of real settings with suggestions and examples for possible uses of ceramics for any home design solution, and last but not least an outdoor space, a real garden where outdoor products can be tried out. Lyon has been Marazzi’s headquarters in France for many years. With the new showroom, and the Paris and Le Cannet locations, Marazzi now has three flagship spaces in the country, historically one of the group’s most important markets.

The new investment forms part of Marazzi’s chosen strategy of reinforcing and positioning the brand in relation to the international community of architects and interior designers. Implementing this policy, Marazzi has recently inaugurated flagship showrooms open to consumers and architecture professionals in the major metropolises of London and Warsaw. “The opening of the new Lyon showroom,” comments Marazzi CEO Mauro Vandini, “confirms our group’s strong interest in France, a country where we have been operating for more than 40 years. “The French market has always been one of Marazzi’s most important,” Vandini adds, “and we have long-established partnerships with all the biggest French retailers. The aim of this new space is to consolidate Marazzi’s positioning as the benchmark brand, both for our customers and for the community of architects.” www.marazzitile.co.uk

n undeveloped 15-acre area known as ‘Arcadia’ will lead the way in a programme that includes the clearance of previously inaccessible areas, large-scale structure installations, new sculpture commissions, the movement and addition of hundreds of tonnes of rock, more than 100,000 new plants and hundreds of new trees, as well as new pathways taking visitors into underexplored areas of the garden. When the initial works are complete, in around three years’ time, more than 25 acres of garden will have been transformed, principally the Rockery, the Maze area, the Ravine, the Trout Stream and Jack Pond, as well as the Arcadia area, which is supported by Gucci. The foundations of Chatsworth’s garden were laid by the celebrated garden designers Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown and Joseph Paxton in the 18th and 19th centuries. Now, a new team of the world’s leading garden designers will build on their work to transform Chatsworth once more.

Working under the direction of Steve Porter, Chatsworth’s Head of Gardens and Landscape, Tom Stuart-Smith will lead the project to design and make major alterations across the garden with work having already begun in the Rockery. The movement and addition of hundreds of tonnes of rock is already underway in an area that was inspired by the 6th Duke’s trip to the Alps in the 19th century. He will also be responsible for the creation of the Arcadia site and changes around the Maze. Dan Pearson will continue his work with Chatsworth, which began when he designed the estate’s ‘Best in Show’ garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2015. The Chelsea garden inspired the redeveloped Trout Stream that ends at the Jack Pond. His latest contribution will be to redesign the Jack Pond area to include a large, new Corten Steel Pavilion and to create a place for contemplation and reflection. 9 0

Having completed the £32m Masterplan project to restore the house a few years ago, the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire have since been planning to have a similar revitalising effect on the garden. The Duke of Devonshire comments: “Chatsworth is often thought of as timeless but the truth is that it has always been changing. What we think of now as ‘traditional’ was often considered challenging or revolutionary at the time. Capability Brown and Joseph Paxton used the latest tools, techniques and ideas to deliver their particular genius for modern garden design. “Tom Stuart-Smith and Dan Pearson have the vision and talent to continue Chatsworth’s radical tradition. We’re going to create an exciting, beautiful, contemporary garden that stands on the shoulders of those earlier giants.” This large project will be phased over several years and will fully involve the 25-strong Chatsworth garden team, four trainees and 75 regular volunteers. Tom Stuart-Smith adds: “When I first came to talk to the Duke and Duchess and the garden team at Chatsworth I was struck by their creative energy and the drive to achieve excellence. Arcadia, in particular, is a huge project and while some of the changes to the four glades within it and the pathways between them will be immediately obvious, I’m confident that, thanks to the long-term thinking here, the whole area will get better and better as the years go by and the planting and other work beds-in.” J U N E

The 105-acre garden is the product of nearly 500 years of careful cultivation. Although some points of interest have been replaced to make way for new fashions, the garden retains many early features, including the Canal Pond, Cascade and 1st Duke’s Greenhouse. The famous waterworks include the 300-year-old Cascade, the Willow Tree Fountain and the impressive gravity-fed Emperor Fountain. As well as the Maze, the Rockery and the Rose, Cottage and Kitchen Gardens, there are also over five miles of walks with rare trees, shrubs, streams and ponds to discover. 9 2

Timeline & principal changes Rockery, Tom Stuart-Smith, from early 2018 to 2021 Principal features: Improved access and rock interest plus massed perennials plantings to provide summer long interest. The Rockery occupies an area of 1.2 hectares. The entrance from the Maze Garden is impressive,

passing under Paxton’s Conservatory Arch and then through a gully planted with a great swathe of Hostas. The two entrances from the direction of the House are very weak by comparison, the rockwork giving less sense of dramatic arrival and the planting being unrelated to any overriding character that the garden as a whole might have. Improvements to these two entrances will redefine the rock garden as a ‘fantasy domain, full of variety, spontaneous naturalness and picturesque diversion and quite separate from the rest of the garden where openness, smoothness, and settled grandeur prevail’.

The proposed planting is more comprehensive, naturalistic and ecologically inspired, using 10-20 dominant species through the whole area to provide a distinct botanical and visual character. Hundreds of other sub dominant or occasional species are then woven into the tapestry. The areas of planting will be much more extensive than they previously were, largely eliminating small areas of grass. 9 3

Arcadia, Tom StuartSmith, mid 2018 to 2021 Arcadia lies at the heart of the garden and at 15 acres in size it might seem anomalous that it has never been much developed. The principal features are made up of views or routes to other more notable parts of the garden that surround it. These include the Rockery and Maze to the west, the Trout Stream to the east, and the Grotto Pond to the south while the Cascade is situated to the north. With quite significant thinning of existing vegetation, a new generation of planting will be threaded through the more mature trees that cast deep shade over much of this area. To form a number of interlocking glades that provide more expansive views across Arcadia, existing clearings will be extended and joined together to create areas where extensive new planting is possible. In Feb 2019, 150 large trees and shrubs were planted; in September 2019, Chatsworth will be planting 8000m2 with herbaceous perennials, equating to circa 80,000 plants. Each of the planting glades will have an individual character determined by the plant content. The woodland glades, or walks, link the planting glades together. They will have a consistent planting throughout of shade tolerant species, designed to enhance these spaces.

Key period of landscaping at Jack Pond starting late 2019/early 2020 Redevelopment of the Trout Stream is intimately connected to Dan Pearson’s creation of Chatsworth’s ‘Best in Show’ garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2015, which provided the conceptual inspiration for new planting and furniture along the Trout Stream, which ends at the Jack Pond. The Jack Pond is currently underused as it no longer holds water and is quite hidden by vegetation and large trees. A large Corten Steel Pavillion will be installed with a curved bench underneath to encourage reflective contemplation around a newly formed elliptical pond in what will remain a secluded area. Planting will aim for a calming effect. www.treasure houses.co.uk

Keller’s Elba and Crystal models are perfectly blended to create a beautiful and trendy kitchen, mixing materials and textures. These models give plenty of design opportunity so kitchens can truly reflect the homeowner’s personality. They can shake it up with bold or light tones with one of Keller’s 1950 NCS colours on structured lacquer cabinets, such as Olive Green, and embrace the rustic rough oak cabinetry and build on this with matching oak shelving or an oak table. The design is perfect for embellishing current trends; homeowners can embrace the industrial style by including dark coloured or metallic appliances into kitchen schemes, or incorporate the growing trend for bringing the outdoors in with kitchen plants and green cabinetry.

LYNDON HELPS BOOST PRODUCTIVITY IN THE WORKCAFÉ

As the office canteen gives rise to the modern Workcafé, Lyndon’s extensive range of commercial furniture solutions is in high demand.

F

rom high and low tables accompanied by chairs, benches or stools, to bespoke cafe style booths and soft seating, Lyndon’s furniture helps create a dynamic space where employees, customers and visitors can meet, work, network, socialise, and recharge. Managing Director at Lyndon, Tim Armitt

explains: “As office design becomes increasingly activity-based, workers are more mobile than ever before. Coffee shops have long been a popular destination for employees to escape their workspace, however they tend to lack privacy, ergonomics or a workspace that is conducive to productivity: hence, the rise of the onsite Workcafé.

Planned or impromptu, employees can ‘escape’ in comfort, yet at the same time maintain close connections with colleagues and the organisation.” The Workcafé is also a popular venue for huddle meetings. Technology is also a must and many of Lyndon’s furniture incorporates power and data connections to aid productivity and convenience. www.lyndon.co.uk 01242 584897

Known for its innovation and design flair, the brand has created the ultimate sink and tap experience for the discerning homeowner with its ERA, ZOE and ONO collections, complemented by a further seven tap ranges. KWC sinks feature refined design details that don’t scream from the rooftops including polished and ultra-slim rims, integral grid ledges, bevelled square waste covers and the company’s signature invisible ghost overflow for sleek aesthetics. Touches of premium teak wood on the strainer bowl and chopping board add further to the visual appeal.

Matthew Day Jackson, Formica Group and Made by Choice present Kolho, a collection of tables and chairs inspired by the moon. Artist Matthew Day Jackson and Formica Group have collaborated on a table and chair collection called Kolho. The collection of furniture features textures derived from images taken from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2009. Jackson, who is with global art super gallery Hauser & Wirth designed his own Formica surface that replicates, to scale, the surface of the moon. Kolho will be a permanent part of the Made by Choice collection available to purchase from www.madebychoice.com.
