ecent weather patterns have highlighted the need for intelligent architecture and products that secure a stable future for the domestic environment. It brings with it also a thoughtprovoking reminder of the importance of sustainable design. This issue’s theme is green living and, as always, Inex is packed full of inspirational products, projects and industry insights. The cover star of this edition is Jay Watson, whose recycled designs use sustainable material experimentation as an opportunity for social commentary. “I love the idea of avoiding waste by giving new life to materials and objects, but also of making something that will be loved and used for the long term,” explains Jay. Read more about his sustainable philosophies on page 16. Elsewhere in this issue, Inex presents garden products that not only boast on-trend aesthetics, but also encourage local wildlife to thrive. It has never been so important to incorporate animal-friendly products as the habitats of local wildlife have been affected and in some cases destroyed by recent storms and floods – view more information about these on-trend exterior products on page 20. candinavian design is a highly valued concept for the design community across the globe. The largest source of inspiration for this is Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair, which for more than 60 years has attracted ambassadors of design to the capital of Scandinavia every February. For this month’s trend insight Inex reports on new lighting highlights unveiled at the Scandinavian show. Grey continues to prevail as Northern Lighting release designs that adhere to the popular hue trend. Acorn is an organically shaped pendant lamp constructed from the combination of an oak top wooden part and oil painted aluminium shade. The lamp, which is inspired by the Nordic autumn forests and the shape of the oak acorn, was presented at the fair in a new elegant grey. detail that gives the lamp a clean industrial look, and makes a sharp contrast to the fragile handmade glass lamp shade. The new glass colour is grey and is in addition to the previously recognised transparent version. Recently honored with the Good design award, The Mars range – designed for Kera Interior by Tapio Anttila – is a lampshade formed of two closed cup-shaped elements crafted from transparent white thermoformed acrylic. The inspiration for the range of lights came from the design language and science fiction films of the 1950s and 1960s, reflecting the fascination with space travel that was characteristic of that era. In addition to creating a shape resembling a classic spaceship, the design allows for use of energy-saving fluorescent ring tubes. The Mars range includes a pendant light and floor lamp that come with identical shades 57cm in diameter. The pendant light is hung INEX-ONLINE.COM

Tapio Anttila has earned five Good Design awards and this is his second award for a project with Kera Interior. Tunto products have received numerous international awards over the last few years and the company continues to break down boundaries with new lighting that is both technologically advanced and reflects the same characteristics as natural lighting. The new Butterfly O1 can be used as an interior design element in multiple ways. The most distinctive aspect of the design is the OLED technology, which is arguably the next step into the future from traditional LED lights. Although fundamentally a functional room, the bathroom is increasingly being viewed as a location of rejuvenation and relaxation. A hugely important factor in creating this personal paradise is well thought out heating that not only provides optimum comfort in, sometimes, cold material surroundings, but also aesthetics. Paul Priestman of Priestmangoode design consultancy discusses the impact of sustainability and smart technology on efficiency of resources within the home and how these have impacted on his new towel rail design for Iconic Radiators.
I
am always learning about new technologies and production processes. I am also fascinated in the constantly changing requirements for products and services. These changes are on one hand driven by market requirements but are also often having to change to conform to improved safety, accessibility and environmental requirements. Anything new and interesting I tuck away in my mind and feed into new projects. Increasing sustainability requirements in the design, manufacture, maintenance and disposal of products has led to some of the most innovative design solutions over recent years. Smart technology has already greatly improved the efficiency of resources within the home, but I think more can be done to improve product ease of use. It’s imperative that we all become more aware of how we use precious resources like water, gas and electricity. For instance, a few years ago I designed a water saving device called the Waterpebble, which acts as a gentle reminder to use less water in the shower. I had the idea when I saw a sign in a hotel bathroom saying ‘please use water sparingly’, however there was no way of quantifying that. The Waterpebble measures the amount of water going down the plug hole and – using your first shower as a benchmark – uses a series of warning lights to reduce your shower time incrementally until you reach three minutes – the recommended length of time for a shower. It’s a simple concept and there’s no alarm, it works merely as a gentle reminder. It guides the user to reduce shower time incrementally by a few seconds each day, thus instilling an intuitive reduction in water usage over time. I like challenging convention. The Hot Spring and Hot Hoop radiators stand out as possibly my most regarded professional achievement. They transformed the perception of radiators in the home, making them INEX-ONLINE.COM

desirable objects that were part of an interior design scheme, rather than something to be hidden away. I think we will begin to see more intuitive products that are influenced by both sustainability and smart technology, as well as fundamental aesthetics emerging on the market in the coming years. When approaching trend research and development I tend to design the product first and – once the initial ideas are sketched out – then look at the market and current trends to see what else is out there and how best to develop my designs into something unique. It’s so easy to take in influences from everywhere to create a standout product, but I believe an isolated design process initially is hugely valuable. I first started to think about the Triarc towel radiator to solve a number of problems with
existing radiators and to fill a gap in the market. I became aware of a developing new tube bending technology and the increasingly stringent environmental requirement to run radiators at a lower temperature, so thought the combination of the two could result in an interesting new product. Triarc is a new radiator designed to strike the perfect balance between sleek style and superior function. The towel radiator warms the room whilst warming and drying towels, has no vertical pipes at the sides and produces the required heat at a lower surface temperature. The majority of work at Priestmangoode is in transport and aviation. We are currently working with the Paragon Space Development Corporation, for whom we’ve designed a capsule that will take passengers on a
balloon ride to the edge of space. It’s an immensely exciting project, with the first flights scheduled for the not too distant future. Design has an ability to impact every aspect of our lives. At Priestmangoode, we work on everything from product design to high-speed trains, public transport, hotels and aviation and our products are used by hundreds of thousands of people every day. I find it hugely rewarding to know that what we do can help make life a little easier for so many people and I view the responsibility of a designer is to continue to design things that make life better. It’s great to be able to work on a such a wide range of projects, from designing radiators to defining the future of space travel. iconicradiators.co.uk « priestmangoode.com «

Redefining design
Right: Bio Mass lights Below: Just desserts both by Jay Watson
When it comes to specifying products for luxury interiors, using items that have already had a purpose might not seem the best to impress a client. However, with the word sustainability constantly on the industry’s lips, innovative methods of recycling are being embraced by designers across the spectrum of interior products. Independent designer-maker Jay Watson discusses material experimentation as the perfect opportunity for social commentary.
A
sustainable product can refer to how it has been made, but also how durable, meaningful and useful it is – namely what kind of a lifespan it will have and what kind of value it will bring. I love the idea of avoiding waste by giving new life to materials and objects, but also of making something that will be loved and used for the long term; something that is efficient not just in resources but in function too. Even though some of my lighting designs use repurposed material, they also feature hi-tech energysaving LEDs systems. Specifying recycled products for an interior project can be a challenge within defined briefs, but it is satisfying and pleasing for both the specifier and end-user. They get a genuinely unique and unusual object or installation that is not a product of consumer culture. However, it is crucial that the process is about choosing a design that has not merely been thrown together for the sake of recycling, but instead a product that embodies thoughtful conception which adds beauty, function and efficiency to its surroundings. As in many cases for interior specification, weighing up finding the perfect material and finish for a scheme against remaining INEX-ONLINE.COM
ethical and staying within budget can be a dilema. Incorporating one or two specialised feature pieces or installations can help to bridge that gap. There is of course the reward of economic benefit in reusing materials, as being ‘bespoke’ might add costs in terms of labour, re-using resources counteracts that initial cost beautifully. I find inspiration in everyday life and from encountering rather ordinary objects – whether that be wondering what to do with a pile of old socks at the back of my wardrobe, or a walk in the woods around my Oxfordshire home. Sometimes it is the object itself that inspires – a need I must perceive for a certain object to exist. For example, view a table as an opportunity for a playfull interaction and dialogue, where one needn’t fear disfiguring the table with marks from hot crockery, as creating stains becomes part of what defines the table and makes it unique. I gain great satisfaction in rescuing a discarded object and giving it new life, purpose and meaning. It is not all about being ‘worthy’ – this level of recycling is merely a drop in the ocean of sustainability – but it is part of the zeitgeist and philosophy of authenticity, of holistically considered design; of looking
18 EXPOSE
for alternatives to a ‘throwaway’ culture. Not forgetting that the challenge and process of ‘recreating’ is also really good fun! There are a number of materials out there that are manufactured using a high percentage of recycled ingredients. Although I tend not to pay much attention to trends, my work is often quoted among forecasters. The Just Desserts and Bio Mass lights are about as recycled as you can get. Just Desserts is a cluster of lowenergy ceiling pendants made from a unique selection of traditional glass dessert bowls. Sourced from flea markets and second-hand shops, these ‘orphaned’ bowls are cleverly reinvented as fascinating luminaires. Coloured glass seems to be having a big comeback and the authentic ‘retro’ feel of the bowls seems to be hitting the right notes. Inspired by biomass heating systems that re-use natural and urban residue to produce heat and electricity with less impact on the environment, I developed the idea of using forest-foraged materials for the ‘eco’ lighting design that is Bio Mass lights. The pendant lamp is made from fallen ash branches. Rather than cutting and polishing
the branches into perfect timber planks, I decided to preserve and optimise the unique organic shapes and the intriguing patterns and texture of the bark. The raw beauty of nature meets the latest high-tech, energy-saving lighting solutions and the unfinished, foraged feel of the Bio Mass lights speaks to a ‘raw nature’ theme that is also very popular. Asking me to choose a favourite up-cycled design is like asking me to choose my favourite child as I love them all for different reasons. Some of my earliest successes will always mean a lot – such as the Read All About It stool made from old newspapers – as well as my more technical, experimental ideas – such Linger a Little Longer with a thermochromic finish – but I do have a real soft spot for my Just Desserts lights. They have been well received on so many levels: aesthetic, functional and sustainable. Recycled designs can suit a plethora of interiors and are very versatile, be that as individual highlights or part of a more considered theme – they stretch merely as far as your imagination. jaywatsondesign.com «

ecent reports from wildlife groups have confirmed that humans haven’t been the only species affected by the recent extreme and unpredictable weather patterns. The floods, storms and torrential rain have devastated wildlife habitats and will inevitably have a long-term impact on the British ecosystem. There are a number of products on the market that make both an interesting feature and a stylish statement to landscaping projects. Encouraging local wildlife to thrive has never been more important
and intelligent garden designs that incorporate animal-friendly products is just one way that the design community can make a difference. Announcing its commitment to the protection of wildlife, Wienerberger – one of the UK’s leading providers of wall, roof and landscaping innovations – has announced the launch of a brand new Eco-Habitat range, which has been developed in partnership with EcoSurv, specialists in the design of eco-habitats and one of the UK’s leading ecological consultancies. The new Eco-Habitat range consists
of the Habibat Bat Box, Swift Box, Starling Box, Sparrow Box and House Martin Box. The boxes can either blend in with existing brickwork or be used as a design feature through the use of contrasting colours. For each item purchased, Wienerberger will make a donation to the Bat Conservation Trust, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or the Swift Conservation Trust. Stunning contemporary bird feeders and baths are the modern equivalent of a garden sculpture for the environmentally-conscious homeowner. The Fuera Bird Feeder or Bath by Susanne Augenstein for German stainless steel specialists Blomus, is a modern bird feeder and bird bath combination. The versatile design allows for use as a bird bath during spring and summer or a bird feeder during winter. It comes with all pieces to convert from one to the other in mere seconds. The design is available in the UK from designer accessories, lighting
and furniture specialists panik A city project needn’t be excluded from wildlife encouragement, as quirky wildlifefriendly wall art makes fashionable statements at the same time as allowing the diminishing bee population to flourish. “Add interest to dull walls with wildlifefriendly wall art, such as a colourful bee hotel, or pre-grown panels of vertival greenery that can be planted direcly into a border or raised bed,” comments awardwinning garden designer Christine Wilkie. City farming is certainly
booming, as emphasised by products such as Studio Segers Daily Needs Modular Chicken Coop & Garden, which is a modular system that can house chickens and small pets, raised beds for vegetables, composting bins, and a tool shed in a versatile configuration format. time the building was listed Grade II. Because of this the scheme then required further re-design, working alongside conservation officers at Southwark Council and culminating in a Listed Building Application and following consent. The building is an industrial Victorian terrace, which not only means narrow spaces, but also a steep and existing stone staircase that conservation wanted to retain. This was a key starting point to organising circulation throughout the whole building and imposed restriction on the subdivision of the entrance storey. Extending the building without detracting from the Victorian tower was another limitation in the context of the building’s historic value, which made space planning and access to the upper floors challenging. A modern glass extension has been constructed to allow natural light down the new staircase that runs from basement to second floor. This also provides access to a screened roof terrace. The third and second floors occupy the top of the tower and needed to be kept as whole rooms expressing the original character of the building. Its exposing original timber beams and steel roof ties have become key design features of the slated pyramidal roof. The kitchen is located on the ground floor, but is set out like a basement due to the building being set back to back with another level. Kitchen specialist Hamilton King has created a bespoke and original design that maximises the sense of light and space whilst utilising the high ceilings as a feature. The kitchen was completed with a combination of matt white and oak finish. The ground level space had limited windows so a pale hue brightens the space whilst showing the unique craftsmanship of the kitchen. “We have created a plywood kitchen because of the integrity of the material,” Hamilton King comments. “The appeal of the material is its structure, and also its strength and stability. The design makes a feature of the layered structure of the plywood. The fronts of the cabinets are a combination of oak veneer and solid core laminate. The walls are not square, so as we created a bespoke product to make the oak wall square off the room, creating a much warmer feel to the entire space.” The main facade is intricate and detailed with Victorian brickwork and stone relief. conserved and therefore upgrading the building envelope – to provide thermal comfort in line with current Building Regulations – was restricted to the installation of internal linings. A whole house ventilation system has been installed to deal with the quirky proportions of the property, displaying a large ratio of volume to external wall and making natural background ventilation unfeasible without detriment to the character of the building facade. The solution to space constraints was to vary the provision. “With two bedrooms of similar size we gave one a bath and one a large format shower and double basin, which is aimed at giving a speculative buyer flexibility in the use of the building.” continues Philippa. “The fourth floor bathroom is in the roof space of the Victorian Tower and hence it was very restrictive on head room and there were no flat walls! expressing the volume of the turret and giving the space character with a new open tread spiral stair. Getting a stair to arrive into such a small space – but with sufficient head room in the pyramidal roof –was a real challenge and we relied on accurate 3D modeling, which is something that Studio Klaschka commission for all project work. This is particularly useful when working with historic assets that have quirky and unexpected geometries and complex coordination issues. Keeping the finishes light and adding smallscale texture in the limestone – as well as large-scale mirrors – emphasises room size.” The concept was a sensitive mixture of old and new, to respect the building’s historic value but at the same time as providing a modern urban living space. ench solutions for desking remain a default standard as businesses continue to maximise their floor space. However there are schools of thought developing which suggest some future change in the face of continuing resistance from staff who feel undervalued sat at a shared space. Whilst regularly specified within Western Europe, within the UK there are pockets of increased demand for height adjustable and sit stand solutions ranging from pin and crank handle adjustment to powered versions. The difference in height range INEX-ONLINE.COM
adjustability being distinctly different for each solution – height adjustable commonly 650mm to 850mm, sit-stand 650mm to 1330mm. Many architects and designers working during the preCAD technology era will of course remember their own version of sit-stand spending the majority of their working day at a drawing board with drafting chair and adjacent rectangular layout table with task chair – how things have changed within a relatively short timeframe but this method of working was obviously beneficial as recent studies confirm that

sit-stand solutions enhance overall employee health while increasing productivity. Space utilisation surveys are a really useful way of highlighting desk usage and it will come as no surprise that an office area with individually assigned desks very rarely exceeds an average 70% usage. So it is quite easy in theory to create a flexible layout and assign a 1.2 headcount for each desk. How you sell this to the occupants is the key challenge and one that is crucial if it is to be a success. Engaging with user groups is essential, obtaining
31 CONTRACT
their views and buy-in at an early design stage helps the designer to fully understand the diverse requirements within an office environment and consequently provide a tailored workplace solution. It is important to find the correct balance between an adequate desk size to undertake specific job function, and provision of sufficient personal space for users to feel comfortable. As always, technology is a key driver to determine required minimum worktop area and it could be argued that the increasing use of PC tablets provides an opportunity to “sweat the asset” whilst complying with legislative minimum requirements. However, experience suggests a bench worktop size of 1400mm x
600mm is the minimum; anything smaller can become restrictive and compromise the user’s personal space. 120 degree desks, more commonly specified within call centre environments, if planned well, can be a viable smaller footprint alternative to lines of rectangular benches but requires careful layout consideration to avoid the common pitfalls of users feeling exposed when backing onto corridors or experiencing light reflection and glare. The growth in ‘third space’ has been significant over the last few years as organisations seek to provide alternative work areas away from the desk using more informal furniture designs which are visually stimulating and give workers new options ranging from private study space to informal team collaboration. Third space products provide a great opportunity to creatively subdivide space without the need for installation of traditional partitions with all the associated services requirements. Meeting pods within open office areas are regularly being specified as an alternative option to traditional meeting rooms; they generally require more capital outlay at day 1 but provide a totally flexible option making future changes not only cost effective but very quick and easy. Workstations connected at 90 degrees to central storage spine configurations are also becoming increasingly popular and a growing number of manufacturers are introducing these designs into their portfolios, visually they provide a cleaner aesthetic due to the reduction in requirement for desk under-structure and create an opportunity to unite families of products and integrate power and data services in a coherent manner. Given the trend to maximise office occupancy, noise levels and lack of concentration are commonly cited as major issues within the open office environment resulting in acoustics becoming a priority in office furniture
designs and is manifesting itself in all the above areas. From soft seating to desk screens, partitions and even storage, sound reduction is being designed into furniture wherever possible. Storage will always remain a pivotal component in workplace design however there has been a big shift in how people use storage in the office. Paper filing storage is increasingly in decline – perhaps we are truly seeing the ‘paperless’ office manifest itself? There has been a massive growth in the requirement for Personal storage solutions to cope with flexible working and as a consequence of this; organisations are increasingly seeking keyless solutions as the cost of ‘key’ management becomes considerable. There are now innovative new Smart card and Image recognition systems becoming available as the importance of personal storage in the workplace develops way beyond the humble locker. Additional capital outlay is again required to provide this smart functionality but the whole life costs can be substantially reduced when factoring in annual facilities management costs. kieurope.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Decorative fish tanks make a powerful statement, complemented here by a monochrome interior palette
Graceful serenity and tranquility Decorative fish tanks can calm and soothe the spirit, as well as bring aesthetic delight, says latest medical research.

ictorian physicians would prescribe ‘sea air’ as an instant cure for an assortment of painful agues and ailments. They were not merely intoning platitudes as new research has found that ‘blue space’ including sea, rivers, lakes and even interior or urban water features such as aquariums can have a positive effect on wellbeing. A team of scientists, headed by Professor Michael Depledge and his team, set up a project in Plymouth last year (European Centre for Environment and Human Health) to study the health and wellbeing benefits of aquatic environments. We recognise the calming effects of a walk along a beach, an hour staring at the ocean, or listening to the tinkle of fountains in a garden. This study includes the contemplative pleasures of fish tanks. One research scientist has been devoting her time looking into the all round benefits of watching fish. Bespoke luxurious aquariums add spectacle to an interior space, they are being designed for the most opulent private homes, clubs, restaurants, hotels and prestigious corporate headquarters, but often in hospitals and care homes where they can have a positive health benefit. The Devon research team are also looking at what’s in the tank, from a biodiversity aspect. They discover that gazing at the water of an aquarium, even without the fish, can have an encouraging effect on heart rate, blood pressure and mood. Scientific studies have found that an aquarium seems to reduce levels of stress and anxiety. Dental patients awaiting treatment were more relaxed looking at exquisitely patterned fish moving about than a poster. To quote a medical report: “Observation of aquaria has also been shown to reduce muscle tension and pulse rate in elderly subjects in comparison to control groups who watched a placebo video tape or a video tape of an aquarium.” The Mystic aquarium in Connecticut has a programme designed to help hyperactive children. with less aggression. In the workplace studies show that high blood pressure was reduced, employees interacted better with each other, they were happier, healthier and more productive. These statements from scientific reports seem to say that we all need aquariums to bring health and joy. They are no doubt fascinating and endlessly watchable, which must be stress relieving. Feng Shui says that the presence and movement of water brings wealth, prosperity and good fortune, and Feng Shui teachers encourage every home or office to install an aquarium. In their philosophy water being one of the five elements it is said to create tranquility and harmony, to generate positive energy. It is certain that aquariums are having a major ‘moment’. Aquarium Architecture has installed aquariums for a galaxy of celebs, from sports stars to financial magnates, and the previous Mayor of New York. Even the current movie monster, Jordan Belfort, as played by DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street, had to display one in his ultra sumptuous office. aquariumarchitecture.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

36 REGENERATION
The regeneration gap
Tim Lowry, owner of Authentic Furniture, a British furniture company selling hand-crafted and bespoke pieces made on-site in its workshops in Derbyshire, shares his views on the increased popularity and the benefits of using reclaimed British timbers.

R
ecycling is an increasingly popular trend, with councils and individuals all taking more responsibility for their own carbon footprint. As well as bagging up rubbish and using recycled paper, more and more homes are being decorated with recycled or antique furniture. The UK produces an estimated 8 INEX-ONLINE.COM
million tonnes of waste wood every year, of which more than 80% ends up in landfill. This huge figure is even more disturbing when we realise how the vast majority of the wood is reusable. More and more eco-conscious designers are utilising reclaimed wood to create beautiful and bespoke furniture. A simple table or sideboard can transform a room when made from a unique piece of well-crafted wood, with its character and history evident in the grain, delivering an ‘aged’ look that cannot be faked in fresh cut timber. The use of reclaimed timber is becoming increasingly popular, not just for furniture but also for use in the construction and refurbishment of homes. The wood often comes from old beams and joists that were previously used in mills, factories, barns and old houses, and can come from a variety of trees, such as Hemlock, Redwood, Oak, Douglas Fir and Poplar. Each have their own characteristics in colours and grain effects and add their own unique style and warmth when crafted into a new purposeful shape. The advantage in using reclaimed timber is that it’s
completely seasoned through years of drying out, and is ultimately less likely to warp and split. This doesn’t mean that it won’t still change naturally over time, as non-structural ‘shakes’ occur in the wood and add more character to each piece. Here at Authentic we use mostly hemlock and redwood, all of which is sourced from Britain. The wood is checked for nails and other metals, as a single nail can cause a great deal of damage to the wood and machines if left in place during the manufacturing process. The timber is then checked for woodworm and treated if necessary, before being stained with natural beeswax for stain resistance. As the desire for reclaimed furniture increases, a lot of
37 REGENERATION
British wood is being bought and shipped to China, where it is mass manufactured and then shipped on to American carrying a rustic “made with British reclaimed timber” stamp which appeals to the American market. It’s ironic that the carbon footprint left by all this travel, and shipping away of our natural resources, has turned reclaimed timber into an ecounfriendly product. Instead, highly skilled British craftsmen such as those we use here at Authentic Furniture are starting to use their skills to offer customers a choice. By buying from the UK, not only do we save on carbon footprint, but using reclaimed wood also means we are not cutting down more of the British countryside. In addition we support local industry and have the satisfaction and security of knowing that our furniture is truly British. There is nothing faked and authenticity can be guaranteed. authenticfurniture.co.uk «

Eco-friendly elements Window dressing is not only a practical element of interior design, but one that offers an opportunity for vogue statements and sustainable advantages. Cormac Diamond, Managing Director at blind specialist Bloc Blinds, discusses how the right window dressing can aid sustainability.
INEX-ONLINE.COM
M
y background is in mechanical engineering. I started my career designing roof windows for a company called Keylite before setting up on my own building digger buckets and other accessories in a factory I established in Poland. I had always had a design in my mind for window blinds and when the economic downturn began I decided to concentrate on that aim. Bloc Blinds came about as a result of this, starting with the manufacturing of a handful of
blinds a week in a small unit in a local industrial estate here in Belfast. I think what sets our business apart from our competitors is that the culture and ethos has always been built on challenging the industry norms. We understand there are some very good companies out there, and we ultimately aspire to be one of them, but we know we can’t ever get there by doing the same things as everyone else. Sustainability is a key part of our business model moving forward and our latest product innovation
40 SUSTAINABILITY
is the Bloc Fabric Changer. This enables the customer to keep the blind they have in their window but allows them to change their fabric quickly and easily. This gives the opportunity of keeping up with the latest trends and designs whilst not needing to purchase a whole new blind. Another benefit of this innovative new scheme is that there is no need to supply lots of new small plastic components or metal tubing, creating a further ecofriendly element. The blinds industry is full of products imported from China. We had to stand apart from the alternatives by offering a real point of difference with our product range. We encourage the development of unique products that can be protected globally and to not be afraid of trial and error. We have a range of PET fabric options to choose from with the Bloc Fabric Changer, which is in addition to the famed energy saving BlocOut design. The BlocOut blind was a landmark for Bloc Blinds in the fact it was recognised as not only a blackout blind but also because
INEX-ONLINE.COM
it has real and quantifiable energy saving benefits – reducing energy loss by up to 43%. These benefits have been recognised with the securing of awards both within the trade and consumer markets. Recently, we secured a partnership with John Lewis as one of its inhouse category brands, and are looking forward to developing this relationship throughout 2014 with more stores hosting a Bloc Blinds department. The most important concern for a designer needs to be what the customer ultimately wants to achieve. If you want a blackout blind then we can’t provide just a roller blind with blackout fabric, which leaves customers
disappointed as it isn’t blackout. We have provided them with a cost effective cassette system that does provide almost total blackout. For us as manufacturer and brand, we don’t think there should be a compromise between efficiency and design. White and Cream blinds are still the most popular designs, but I think the industry will see personalisation continue to become more prominent. Manufacturers need to offer more bespoke prints and designs and responding to those quickly and efficiently will be key in the coming years. blocblinds.co.uk «

ilan is once again the international furniture and design capital, the only city in the world to host a trade fair capable of attracting over 300,000 visitors from 160 different countries. The 53rd edition of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile has been split, as usual, into three style categories – Classic, Modern and Design. Exhibitors from Italy and around the world will be showcasing their products at both the Salone and the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition. The Salone Internazionale del Mobile will boast not just the consolidated presence of leading national and global sectoral manufacturers, but also the new INEX-ONLINE.COM

inclusion of high-end furnishing companies such as Hästens, Kvadrat, Iittala, Tom Dixon, and upmarket fashion brands such as Ferré, Pierre Cardin and Ungaro, making the wide range of goods on offer even more tantalising. Some very well-known names will be back on the stands, such as Flötotto, Gebr. Thonet, SCP, Thonet, Treca, Wittmann. All the leading Italian and foreign kitchen manufacturers will be exhibiting at the 20th edition of EuroCucina, International Kitchen Furniture Exhibition, ranged across four dedicated pavilions. EuroCucina is a global benchmark event, with a huge range of different types of furnishing and style solutions. Many top manufacturers will be back at this biennial exhibition, including Alno, Cesar, Dada, Mobalpa and Pedini. The International Bathroom Furniture Exhibition will feature all the latest bathroom accessories and furniture, shower cubicles and saunas, sanitary ware, radiators, coverings, taps, baths and hydromassage tubs. Increasingly extensive and over-arching, the biennial bathroom exhibition will occupy pavilions 22-24 at the Milan Fairgrounds, Rho, in their entirety for the first
time, its standing underscored by the return of leading companies, including Gessi e Sicis. Changes are also afoot for SaloneSatellite – devoted to creative young designers – which will be held in pavilions 13-15 and with free entry. This year marks the fifth edition of the SaloneSatellite Award for the three best projects chiming with the goods being showcased at the trade fair, fostering contact between the under-35s and companies exhibiting at the Salone. As always, the wide-ranging trade fair itself will be accompanied by a collateral event, curated by Francesca Molteni e Davide Pizzigoni, entitled “Where Architects Live”. Eight leading international architects – including

Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield and Shigeru Ban – will throw open the doors of their “private homes”, presented in pavilion 9. The installations will trigger crosscutting reflections on contemporary architectural methods, practices and trends, illustrating exactly what designing a house entails today. The Salone del Mobile is renewing its close ties with the city of Milan and, in collaboration with its Department of Fashion and Design, will be promoting and setting up a structured welcome, with input from Milan’s design schools. Information stands organised in collaboration with Fiera Milano will be set up in various focal points around the city, manned by students providing visitors with logistical information on how to access the Fairgrounds and move around the city. This is a major sector-promoting project, immediately and enthusiastically
embraced by all the various protagonists of Salone del Mobile Week. The schools involved in the Project will draw on this experience to tackle a didactic exercise involving an analysis and verification of Salone users and come up with ideas for services that could be incorporated into the 2015 edition. For the second year running, an agreement between the Salone del Mobile, Fiera Milano and ATM – Milan’s Transport Agency – means that visitors to the Salone will be able to acquire an integrated ticket valid for public transport on Milan’s urban network and for entry to the trade fair. Visitors can enjoy another special offer, thanks to an agreement with Trenitalia, which will provide ticket discounts for 230 trains to reach Milan during the Salone. To be eligible for the reduced prices, just show your admission ticket for the Salone. www.cosmit.it «

A rise in demand for teak Barlow Tyrie will be displaying a blend of traditional materials and contemporary designs at next month’s Salone del Mobile in Milan.
A
s the world’s oldest manufacturer of quality teak leisure furniture, Barlow Tyrie has diversified in recent years developing collections in a variety of materials. These have proved incredibly successful and feature strongly in the current Barlow Tyrie collection. However, expert use of high-grade teak remains at the heart of the business and with demand for quality teak furniture on the rise, its use can be seen in several new Barlow Tyrie ranges. Chesapeake is an extensive new collection in solid teak, initially comprising an armchair, side chair, innovative swivel rocker complete with Sunbrella fabric cushions and 2m and 2.8m dining tables. The range is being extended to include a 113cm circular dining, low tables, lounger and deep-seating in the very near future. Its ‘look’ marries aspects of the traditional, such as rolled armrests on the chairs and rolled edges and curved sides to the dining table, with clean, crisp contemporary touches that include nylon glides on the bottom of tapered legs. Titan is an impressive new teak dining table made using recycled teak off cuts. The name suits this robust design that is presented in a rustic look that will appeal to a variety of tastes and outdoor locations. The Titan range is part of the new Rustic Teak Collection that uses traditional teak, featuring knots and a varied grain pattern. INEX-ONLINE.COM
This is part of the design ‘charm’ for this product and is not considered a flaw, as the final finish matches other Barlow Tyrie products. Standing alongside the Chesapeake and Titan designs is Piazza, an entirely new range in powder coated aluminium, developed specifically for the contract market. Armchairs, side chairs and a 60cm pedestal bistro table are available in a wide choice of colours and combine contemporary styling with Barlow Tyrie’s high quality manufacturing. Linear range has expanded adding a new conversational teak dining table, combined with armchairs and backless benches. Mitred corners and fine close slats show the quality of the

The E.ion System range of cooker hoods uses natural processes of air purification to remove dust, pollen, pollution and bacteria that exist in the air and affect our immune system as we breathe it in. Particles called ions exist in the air, dubbed ‘the vitamins of the air’ for the beneficial effects they have on air quality by eliminating pollutants. Ions are known to improve concentration and our moods and by removing pollutants, this increases our energy and wellbeing. The E.ion System extractors are recirculating, fixed to the ceiling via a plate or to the wall via brackets. This means more freedom to position the extractor where you wish without having to knock through the wall for ducting. It features a regenerable Carbon and Zeolite filter that deals with cooking odours and steam. falmec.co.uk 0845 338 1761
