MARCH 2018
T
his month’s issue of Inex looks towards the future. Interior design trends, like trends in any sector, are constantly changing, developing and being reinvented. In recent years we have seen an increase in the demand for smart technology, and we know that this is only going to grow. With the integration of smart home technology becoming the norm for most households and with technology continuously altering at a rapid pace, it has suddenly become vital for design professionals to understand smart home technology and the latest audio-visual developments to ensure they keep up with the demand. Matt Nimmons, Managing Director of CEDIA EMEA, discusses what clients expect on page 50, so you don’t get left behind.
W E L C O M E
WELCOME TO
Looking to the future doesn’t just mean keeping up with the latest technology though. It can also refer to sustainable design as one Austrian design studio explains on page 83. Penda is currently working on the design of a small house on a tiny plot of land in the countryside of Germany, that focuses on connecting living and working in a harmonious way. By transforming the rooftop of the Yin & Yang house into an ascending garden, the design team hopes to secure a path to food-independency for the owners. On page 09 we look into the not too distant future to discover what trends to expect throughout the rest of the year in the world of flooring and turn to page 77 to reveal the futuristic spa that Simone Micheli has designed. With the theme of the future a feature that weaves its way through the whole of this issue, I couldn’t think of a more perfect time to unveil our new look! Both the magazine and our website have had a style makeover because here at Inex, we’re looking to the future too! I hope you enjoy this edition. Don’t forget, you can also access all of Inex’s features and product inspiration at your fingertips via the magazine’s state-of-the-art app. To download your version free of charge, simply search ‘Inex-online’ on the App Store or Google play.

TRENDS FOR WOOD IN 2018
F L O O R S ,
Interior design trends, like all trends, are cyclical and this is no different for trends in wood. Interior design trends today are reimaginings rather than pastiche interpretations of history. Reimagined because they’re traditional ideas reshaped by modern practices.

I
n 2018 the parameters of interior design move away from grey colour schemes and minimalist Scandi style to a reintroduction of bold colours and elaborate patterns. Expect to see a lot of olive greens, oxblood reds and mustards – hues that have been somewhat forgotten about since the 1970s! Intricate detail, texture and handmade materials satisfy appetites for craftsmanship and individuality and this is something that will play much more of a part in interior projects this year.
Revived elegance
Revived elegance is the perfect blend of influences ranging from the allure of Art Deco to Mid-Century Modern-inspired interiors. Above all, it’s the antithesis of minimalism – a bold, richly decorative style where every surface is considered. Expect to see elaborately panelled wall decor, ornate parquet floors, brushed velvet, intricate wallpapering and a wealth of marble in 2018. Whilst parquet flooring was once an emblem of the aristocracy, featuring in the grand homes of the elite; herringbone, chevron and Parquet de Versailles panels are enjoying a revival in modern times with interior designers wanting to work wood’s texture, sculpture and historical beauty into their projects.
Elevated grain
There is something about an honest wood that when you come into contact with it you feel connected to the natural world. Timeless, versatile and undulating surface textures assail the senses, providing a sense of harmony and wellbeing. 1 1

Wood comes in so many hues and textures that the natural material lends itself to many different applications and decorative techniques, with the added bonus of the warm, organic element that it bestows on any room. Reclaimed wood carries with it all of the beautiful, organic blemishes that nature intended, imbued with the rich aura of bygone times and packed with design potential for interiors; with open weathered grains providing inspiration.
Dynamic colour palette
Elevated grain is becoming somewhat of a must-have in 2018. The varying textures and characterful features of wood when featured on walls, ceilings and floors adds layers of interest as the natural composition of wood brings a calming feel to interiors.
Metallic
Metallic accents pique interest without overwhelming the viewer. The modern magpie shine that comes with a metallic surface is irresistibly alluring and metallic accents from kitchen taps to draw
handles feature in interior projects across the world. Metallic accents aren’t exclusive to accessories and the magic of metallic can be worked into wood flooring. Incorporating copper herringbone blocks alongside wooden herringbone blocks creates an understated yet aesthetically alluring look.
Multi-surface wood
With the move away from minimalism, expect to see decoration virtually everywhere – from walls, floors, doors and – yes – ceilings, no surface remains unconsidered. 1 3
Bold colours and an abundance of texture are replacing paredback, simplistic colour palettes in 2018. While many interior designers have been seduced by Pantone’s Colour of Year, the American paint company Benjamin Moore’s colour of 2018 embarks on the spicier side of life with Caliente. Caliente literally translates as hot from Spanish and the strong, radiant red is as hot as it gets. Red has long been considered the apogee of passion and confidence, suggesting that 2018 will be the year for imaginative, inventive and visionary interior design projects. Subtle inflections of colour make much more of a refined interior statement with doors, furniture and ceilings being painted to provide character and charm in a space, without having to entirely redecorate. There’s a trend towards a retro print theme across the board from furniture to soft furnishings, for example, instead of button backs we’re using a pleated method in booth seating. It also means we are working on bold, characteristic designs coupled with an antique finish, across the board from lighting, tiles, flooring and signage. For example, we created a bespoke geometric design dancefloor for a 1 4
bar in Nottingham, where we used a vinyl tile in vivid blues against softer greys and taupes. The retro theme also plays out from shapes to leaf prints, which are coming back, alongside a polished, minimal interior. In offices, the trend in eating and break-out areas is to switch to taller seating and merge the space to give an informal feel but encourage productivity. designvenue.co.uk

FILL THE SPACE Open spaces, large glass surfaces and demure forms, expressed by a minimal amount of colours, accessories or ornaments, have ruled for the past few years. The industrial look shows no signs of slowing down among designers.
P

a completely different approach to the question of designing structures, as well as arranging the resultant interiors, where parquets, traditional wallpaper or ornamental furniture fronts are nowhere to found. What counts now is simple form, subtle colours and large formats.
I N D U S T R I A L
Large formats – how large?
Gres tiles have been incorporated in designs for a long time. In the past, these were small elements with thick jointing. Today, the bigger they get, the better. Until recently, square tiles of 60 x 60cm were considered large. And although they still have a great appeal, they are slowly superseded by similarshaped elements of 80 x 80cm, and by rectangles of 60 x 120cm.
The force of universality
The decorative potential of large-format tiles is unlimited, which definitely contributes to their appeal. It is obvious that they are a perfect material for floor arrangements, as they create an aesthetic homogeneous surface that will always inspire awe. This effect can be further reinforced with the use of 3mm jointing with matching colours. When tiling walls, it is possible to reduce this thickness even more (2mm). In this case, tiling selected wall fragments, e.g. above the fireplace, which will perk up each arrangement, creating a cohesive flow with an identically finished floor. 1 7

Large-format decor
Large formats of gres tiles are perfect for minimalist, sophisticated interiors; ones that are characterised by simplicity and elegance. They are a great fit for spacious, bright apartments, creating an ideal base for modern living room furniture or designer accessories in the form of massive lamps or an eye-catching armchair. In turn, bright-grey, square elements can create a homogeneous background for an open kitchen and living room plan, where a comfortable couch with soft apricot upholstery will serve as the centrepiece.
Abundance of motifs and finishing styles
The sheer force of large-format tiles lies in the abundance of structures and finishing styles, as well as in their subtlety of colours. Concrete inspirations have swept the board for several seasons now. The dusty colours, non-uniform surface structures and matt finishing of raw concrete is proving popular in industrial-themed interiors. Large-format tiles are definitely the future of modernist design. They are definitely worth following, since, due to their completely new dimensions, their definition is about to change. cerrad.pl/en 1 9

nna Lindgren and Sofia Lagerkvist have expertly combined the patterns and geometries of traditional flooring with new shapes and colours, creating rugs that feature a three-dimensional matrix, accentuated by their irregular shapes. PARQUET embraces GAN’s philosophy of integrating traditional and new elements with Scandinavian simplicity. Using simple geometric figures with four to eight sides as building blocks, the renowned Swedish designers have created three models of reversible kilims: Tetragon, Rhomb and Hexagon. The three designs are made completely from pure new wool in manual looms, operated by skilled craftsmen and women of India.
The shape of these rugs moves away from the classic shape, and the designs and colours manage to visually enlarge the space in which they are located, and open it to new dimensions, with daring and freshness 2 3

Tetragon is the most colourful rug in this collection, with a balanced mix of grey, blue, yellow, pink and dark green. Rhomb takes a more organic shape, with less angular contours and a soberer chromatic range expressed in yellow, grey and white. Hexagon declines in red and orange, captured in cubic motifs divided into vertical lines that play to create overlays and stratifications. gan-rugs.com

A STAIRCASE THAT TICKS ALL THE BOXES Simon Williams’ quest for the perfect staircase to fit his newlypurchased five-bed family home began when he first discovered StairBox online back in the springtime of 2015.
A
StairBox staircase (and associated case study just like the one you’re reading now) had caught his eye and he could really imagine how this product could transform the entrance area to his Buckinghamshire property. Simon revealed: “We were searching around for weeks for the right product and when we saw a staircase on the StairBox website we knew it was the one. Then, in March, we visited the company’s stand at the Homebuilding & Renovating Show at the NEC in Birmingham. This gave us a great opportunity to speak to the team about our requirements and see a design ‘in the flesh’.” Opting for a contemporary, chunky-style oak staircase with open risers and glazed panels, Simon wanted to create a feature point to an entrance hallway. The current staircase in situ was a stark contrast, featuring traditional, turned spindles with cupboards underneath. A transformation of this dimly lit area into one filled with light was a requirment and the new StairBox staircase design would fulfil this brief exactly. “I had a clear idea of what we wanted and so, having a background in engineering, after the show I produced my own CAD designs,” said Simon. He continued: “We went through my plans with the StairBox team and initial designs progressed pretty quickly. We matched my CAD designs to StairBox’s own design programme and adapted them along the way because at this point there were certain things which I wanted to change and customise. This didn’t take us very long and we soon honed in on a design which worked for us. The process was quite simple, with StairBox only needing three key dimensions.”

A major factor also in play for Simon was time. He explained: “Our timescale was another key aspect which had led us to the company, knowing that StairBox could deliver our new staircase in the timeframe that we needed.” Simon continued: “We had bought the property in May of that year and wanted to move in as soon as possible so we were trying to push through a renovation over quite a short period. Our builder had started work in the summer and we wanted to move in during the autumn, ideally for Christmas, and we managed to achieve that.” The staircase was delivered on schedule and arrived in two phases; first the timber components and finally the glazing. Simon added: “It was a bit of a tight squeeze as the staircase incorporated a 90° turn. However, taking care and time to make sure dimensions were 100% accurate meant the installation process was hassle-free. In fact, our builder commented on how straightforward the staircase was to install and was extremely impressed with the quality of the product.” Simon said: “The staircase was installed in November, we then finished our flooring off, decorated and in December it was all done. We’re really happy with how it’s turned out. It’s exceeded our expectations in terms of transforming our entrance area which was previously so dull. Now the light floods in, with different shapes of light projections filling the space when the sun is shining.” stairbox.com

A CULTURAL MASTERPIECE
MVRDV and Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute (TUPDI) have completed Tianjin Binhai Library as part of a larger masterplan to provide a cultural district for the city.
T
he 33,700m2 cultural centre featuring a luminous spherical auditorium and floorto-ceiling cascading bookcases not only acts as an education centre, but also social space and connector from the park into the cultural district. An oval opening punctured through the building is propped open by the Eye, a luminous sphere with an
auditorium, which takes the main stage within the atrium and enlarges the perceived space within. Terraced bookshelves which echo the form of the sphere create an interior, topographical, landscape whose contours reach out and wrap around the facade. In this way, the stepped bookshelves within are represented on the outside, with each level doubling up as a louvre.

The futuristic library sits within a sheltered gallery, topped with cathedrallike vaulted arches, which winds its way throughout the scheme. MVRDV’s project is surrounded by four other cultural buildings designed by an international team of architects including Bernard Tschumi Architects, Bing Thom Architects.
10
The five-level building also contains extensive educational facilities, arrayed along the edges of the interior and accessible through the main atrium space. The public programme is supported by subterranean service spaces, book storage and a large archive. From the ground floor, visitors can easily access reading areas for children and the elderly, the auditorium, the main entrance, terraced access to the floors above and connection to the cultural complex. The first and second floors consist primarily of reading rooms, books and lounge areas whilst the upper floors also include meeting rooms, offices, computer and audio rooms and two rooftop patios. Tianjin Library is part of German architect firm GMP’s 120,000m2 masterplan which aims to accentuate the characteristics of the surrounding districts. Through its design, the complex will become a junction point for the CBD, old town, residential districts, commercial areas and the Government quarter; hoping to compensate for any missing programme in each. The library’s outer volume was given in the masterplan so the Eye and its surrounding semi-public area are an internal space, like an inverted icon, acting as a central point and folly in the building. The library is MVRDV’s most rapid fast-track project to date. It took just three years from the first sketch to the opening. Due to the given completion date, site excavation immediately followed the design phase. The tight construction schedule forced one essential part of the concept to be dropped: access to the upper bookshelves from rooms placed behind the atrium. This change was made locally and against MVRDV’s advice and rendered access to the upper shelves currently impossible. The full vision for the library may be realised in the future, but until then perforated aluminium plates printed to represent books on the upper shelves. Cleaning is done via ropes and movable scaffolding. mvrdv.nl

THE FUTURE OF AUDIO-VISUAL PRODUCTS IN THE HOME The integration of smart home technology is fast becoming the norm for households up and down the country. It’s now more important than ever for design professionals to understand smart home technology and the latest audio-visual developments to provide the service that is now fully expected by the client. ere Matt Nimmons, Managing Director of CEDIA EMEA, discusses the latest audio-visual developments and how these can be integrated into the home.
Lighting
Lighting is often underestimated but can truly transform a home. As well as providing more efficient lighting using dimming technology and location awareness, lighting control systems can offer so much more. If integrated into the wider home automation
system, lighting controls can bring other elements of the home together for ease of use, and can be controlled in ‘scenes’. A well-designed lighting system has the capability to add glamour, ambience and spacemagnifying qualities to any home, as well as added security.
Security
Security remains a high priority for consumers seeking a smart connected home. Many homeowners now choose to include a video entry and CCTV setup as 5 1
standard. This enables users to see who’s at the front door simply by looking at their television screen, which can be tuned directly into the CCTV channel without the use of any additional hardware – appearing as a pop-up when activated.
Home entertainment
Media rooms and home cinemas can be multi-functional areas, with split TV and projector systems becoming a popular choice. Home control systems enable the cinema-watching process to occur smoothly thanks to pre-programming, which can transform a living area into a home cinema instantly. TVs can be fitted discreetly into manufactured furniture, with speakers positioned in the ceiling for optimum sound quality with minimal visual intrusion. I N E X

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) will change the way we interact with our environment and the technology within it. For home entertainment, installers and designers will be challenged to build VR rooms that can be shared by several users connected to the same experience. The next 25 years will bring more practical implementations of that ‘special room’ in the home where education, training, health consulting, business meetings and multi-player gaming can all take place combing the real world.
Control systems
Good home automation systems should be seamless, and advances in technology have made this possible today. All integrated technology can be controlled from one interface, either through control panels situated throughout the home or via mobile devices, proving the simplicity and ease of managing home automation. This can range from finger-tip electronic control over any aspect of the home, to pre-programmed settings that turn on your lights and unlock your doors when your car pulls in the drive, to the latest smart thermostats that automatically adjust to local weather and humidity. cedia.org

andibe brings an iconic new destination for the region and sets a brand-new highreaching standard for safari lodge design. The focus for MB was to create a design with a lighter, more sustainable footprint. The lodge is constructed using natural materials local to the area. No concrete has been used in overground construction, while a solar panel farm supplies all of Sandibe’s electricity. Demonstrating MB’s design focus on flow, light and space and capturing the tranquility of the region, Sandibe’s design shows a clear move away from the typically dark interiors of traditional safari lodges. MB’s design is luxurious, sculptural and clean, from the 12 elevated guest suites to the sweeping timber ribs in the main areas leading to the dramatic curved bar.
The lodges are a sequence of internal and external spaces with lounging areas, private outdoor dining and a private plunge pool, and to provide warmth in colder days; each is fit with a wood burner I N E X

Nestled amongst a forest canopy of wild palms and fig trees with unrestricted views of the shimmering Delta, the lodge currently consists of a main building surrounded by 12 private nest guest suites where guests can relax and enjoy the views from an open-plan, airy bedroom and lounge area. The suites, with their striking shingle-covered design, are constructed from timber and are inspired by pangolins’ and weavers’ nests. Each suite is lifted from the ground level to achieve a feeling of being in the trees and to make the most of the views. Carefully situated into the landscape, they are organised as a sequence of internal and external spaces with lounging areas, private outdoor dining and a private plunge pool and, to provide warmth in colder days; each is fit with a wood burner.

Guests arrive at a dropoff point not far away from the building, but initially there is no sign of habitation. They are then led through a bower woven from saplings and laths to a threshold, which provides the first glimpse of the lodge, nestled between the trees. Guests are drawn up the stairs as they enter the main lodge building between segments of shingled skin, arriving on a dining terrace about 1.5m above the ground. Turning left, they ascend another half flight of stairs to the bar and lounge with its sweeping timber ribs and dramatic curved bar. This leads out to a walkway though an old ficus tree ending in a spectacular viewing platform where guests can enjoy unrivalled views over the Delta. The forest floor level is dominated by a striking boma (firepit) formed from oversized wooden logs.

bstract and floral art collectors alike will be drawn to Franck de las Mercedes’ latest art series. The artist’s use of colour veers into the mood-altering, with electric tones and forms with an almost digital sense. In this new series of gestural flowers titled Floret, Franck de las Mercedes invites the viewer to experience his technique as well as the virtuosity of his subject. Painted on paper, the series combines both the abstract and figurative in overlapping fields of highly saturated colour combined with hieroglyphiclike text, resulting in energetic imagery that draws the eye across the entirety of the surface. “Having lived most of my life in New York City, I’ve always been drawn to a visual clash of urban colours, decaying walls, torn-up ads and the effect that time and the elements have on surfaces. This series of paintings was influenced by nature and vegetation in urban settings and the resilience they radiate in settings where they are not necessarily being cared for or expected to grow,” explains Franck. franckdelasmercedes.com

LUXURIOUS LOCATION MANIFESTED BY SURREALITY The wonderful spa in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina – designed by Simone Micheli and engineered by Aquaspecial – is shaped as a surreal and fascinating place, able to receive and project humans into another world, suspended among space and time and out of traditional visions of reality.

he involving and intriguing atmosphere of the spa embraces guests, promoting all the senses’ relaxation and the loosening of the bodies and minds of guests. The natural world is present inside the structure giving birth to soft dimensions that, combining their essences, melt together. Perspectives are many and the point of view continually changes; thanks to fascinating games of mirrors and screens, the image becomes a determining icon. Water passes incessantly through the space, dividing into many directions and involving visitors into the eternal and cyclical stream of life. The Sarajevo Spa appears as an ‘out-of-conventions’ place, a purifying and welcoming space, able to offer pure, candid and harmonious moments of relaxation in opposition of monotonous and dissonant frenzy of everyday life.

The client through the surreal hallway to the entrance of the spa, becomes immediately part of the vanishing and natural atmosphere that defines the space. The client is met with warm and suffused light; the range of shades and colours harmonise together to create an irresistible flow of existence. Crossing the threshold, the composition of sounds, shades, images, colours and textural essences wrap the host, supporting relaxation of the senses and rapturing of the mind. Beneficial sensations penetrate into the body and mind, dissolving the daily torpor and intensifying the emotional network.

The surroundings immerse the spa user in full, in worlds that are built around its movements. The constant flow of the water, with its innate and cathartic purifier, power to shape the environment, models the soft delicacy of the bath and the furniture, which make candid forms; essential is the warm of the sauna and the inebriating vapour of the steam room. The water is reflected in the mirrored surfaces and multiplies in the images of the screens, intensifying its purifying qualities and the process of the visitor being regenerative. simonemicheli.com

YIN & YANG Austrian design studio Penda is working on a design for a small house in the countryside of Germany that connects living and working in a harmonious way. As the plot is so small, Penda is transforming the roof of the building into an ascending garden to secure a path to foodindependency for the owners.

he Yin & Yang house is designed for a small family that wants a life off-grid – independent and self-sufficient. Because the lawn on the plot is not large enough, Penda integrated gardening planters for vegetables, herbs and fruits on the roof. The house is shaped by two separate entities that are connected in a harmonious way with a green roof. Similar to a Yin & Yang sign, the two main areas of the house are intertwined. One half for living, the other half for working. The two roof sides are shaped like mountains from the ground to their highest points and surround the garden like a valley in between them. The ascending roof channels rainwater to the ground where it is stored and reused on dry days to water the plants. When architecture supports the way we grow our food, a house becomes more than just a building. It attracts all your senses. Nature makes the house visually appealing because it changes its look according to the seasons. Natural materials make it haptic. You can hear your house, because different animals like bees or birds become part of daily life. It has its own natural scent, based on the plants growing on the roof. And in a way you are able to eat part of the house. This sensible architecture creates a special bond to the building and it creates a personal relationship.

A house that lives and grows
The living roof is not just a tool for living an autarkic lifestyle, but also a design element. Mother nature is a patient sculptress and will transform the house over time. Depending on the season, the house will bloom in different colours and different scents. From vibrant colours in spring to a white snow-field in winter, the house changes over time and transforms itself in harmony to its surroundings.
A house that supports real food
After decades of unsustainable food production and food supply by industrial agriculture, we are slowly learning about the costs of health for our bodies, wellbeing and the biosphere caused by this system. The key for an ecological foodcycle is to grow and eat local products.
A house to work globally in a rural area
The house is conceptualised for a young family that would like to live and work on the countryside. Rural areas around our globe are trying to find strategies of how to attract young people. Forecasts show that cities and urban areas attract young people. By 2050, more than 70% of our population will live in cities. Architects are called upon to find solutions how to revive the countryside. “I do think one step is to integrate the quality of life on the countryside into the building. We millennials are a very fortunate generation. I N E X

“Whenever architects design a building, they take an area away that used to belong to nature. We try to give this space back to plants on the roof. At the same time we provide a gardening system for the owners with greenhouses in winter and rows of planters for the rest of the year.” Chris Precht, Founding Partner of Penda

My wife and I are living in the mountains of Austria, but work on projects worldwide and are able to enjoy the benefits of both worlds. The Yin & Yang house is designed for a family with a similar lifestyle and mindset,” explains Chris Precht, Founding Partner of Penda. NFTMMS MEMBER RENOVATES HISTORIC CERAMIC MOSAIC FLOOR AT MAJOR STATELY HOME Restoring the historic ceramic mosaic floor in the game larder at one of the UK’s leading historic houses has been undertaken by National Federation of Terrazzo, Marble and Mosaic Specialists (NFTMMS) member, JW Restoration.
A
ccording to federation spokesperson, Brian James, this exemplifies the quality of the skills and craftsmanship of NFTMMS members which can produce the most spectacular results. The game larder, which dates from 1909, was used to hang game that was shot on the estate. It became derelict following the arrival of modern refrigeration techniques and was subsequently used to house chickens in the 1950s and 1960s. “We were specified for this project due to our expertise in mosaic restoration and our extensive experience of working within listed and historically-important buildings,” comments Oliver Wood of JW Restoration. “It proved to be a fascinating and challenging project but also one which was hugely rewarding.”

The initial report revealed that the large octagonal mosaic floor was missing large sections of ceramic tiles, called tesserae, and there was damage where the original internal metalwork had been removed. In addition, the game larder had suffered from exposure to the elements for many years and acidic attacks from years of chicken waste. “One particular challenge was matching the different coloured ceramic tesserae,” 1 0 4
explained Oliver. “The light and dark green tesserae proved the most difficult to match, but it was critical for all concerned that we achieved the closest possible fit to minimise the visibility of the restored areas.” JW Restoration hand-cut the tesserae to the correct size and appearance to match the original precisely. It worked from a rubbing of a section of the mosaic which allowed the federation member to replicate the fan pattern of the original and the missing sections were then made in its workshop and transported to the stately home for the installation. “Once the large missing sections were installed and grouted, we were able to give the mosaic a non-abrasive deep clean to remove the years of organic soiling that had accumulated,” said Christian Jeeves. JW Restoration was hired by specialist contractor Croft Building & Conservation, which oversaw the project and worked closely with London-based architect firm Inskip Jenkins and specialist tile manufacturer, Craven Dunnill. The NFTMMS represents companies who wish to maintain and improve the standards of craftsmanship and technical control on which the industry depends. It includes companies involved in terrazzo, mosaic, marble, granite, limestone and quartz, and NFTMMS members freely offer technical advice and assistance with specifications. nftmms.co.uk 0845 609 0050
