o often in the design world, we discuss the launch of new and innovative products – we’re always looking for the latest trend, the next big thing. But sometimes it’s the reissuing of a product that we need to shout about.

John and Sylvia Reid were once pioneers in furniture design and they’re set to become household names again. Sylvia Reid, who is now in her 90s, has given the go-ahead to her son Dominic Reid to oversee the reissue of their iconic S-Range, designed in 1960. This month, Inex was lucky enough to speak to Sylvia and discuss her career over the years, how she became a furniture designer in the first place and find out what advice she’d give to budding designers trying to burst onto the scene. “I

n 1916, to escape the atrocious folly of the War, a group of six young men had themselves admitted to Villa Seminario military hospital in Ferrara,” explains Fabio Novembre. “Their names were: Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carrà, Alberto Savinio and Filippo de Pisis. Their rejection of reality led them to construct an alternative reality that they called metaphysics, a world made up of muses and enigmas, angst and enchantment.” 8

Dedicated to these young artists and the artistic current that contributed to the definition of the early 20th century avant-gardes is the work Muse, created in the VENINI furnaces from the intense collaboration between the Designer Novembre

and the master craftsmen of the time-honoured Murano glassworks. “Muse is my tribute to those boys,” comments Novembre. Muse is a collection of luminous sculptures that revisits the metaphysical poetic: as for de Chirico, also for Novembre the tailor’s mannequin, cold, stiff, devoid of emotions, takes the place of a seemingly inexpressive human being. However, with the poses it assumes and the role it plays in the space, the mannequin still manages to convey those moods of angst and loneliness, also in function of the colour that characterises it. The artistic object that results is enigmatic, silent and extraordinarily evocative. Novembre has a unique way of creating architecture, installations and objects

with a recognisable, but always surprising style. This approach makes the experience of working together with the designer particularly meaningful and fascinating. Muse took shape outside of time and space, in a continual oscillation between classical perfection and the uncertainties of the present, just as occurred with the metaphysical artists. The VENINI glassworks master craftsmen blow the opaline glass inside a cage-like metallic structure, as in the tradition of the Venetian lantern – the skilfully controlled energy is impressed into the raw material and alternates with the precision of the manual processes, demonstrating the elasticity of the glass, despite the presence of a rigid mould. 9

Muse reveals the extraordinary capacity of the VENINI furnaces to preserve and promote a heritage that is unique in the world: the manufacture of fine glass. The master craftsmen are the custodians of an antique know-how, precious and unique – a secret that within the walls of the furnace translates into extraordinary works, thanks to the magic encounter between fire and water, art and craftsmanship, the antique and the contemporary. Presented in three colour variants – grass green, milk white and red, in honour of the excellence of Italian products – the Muse collection comes in a limited edition of only nine pieces per colour. The base of the head in white Carrara marble offers another reference to the classical artistic experience, which the metaphysical artists drew on abundantly. onsidering one’s mind, thoughts, perception and subconsciousness, Sinan Books is seen as a person with a system of acquiring knowledge while discovering oneself and the surrounding. The entrance level of Building 25 is set on the second floor. It features a cafe, an area for literature and the public yet intimate Sinan living room. On the third floor, there is an area focused on art – the peaceful Sinan music room as well as flexible spaces that can host exhibitions, book club events and small concerts. It’s a perfect place to experience the charm of art. Located on the fourth floor, the writer’s study symbolises the bookstore’s thoughts. Small cultural saloons can be held here. It’s a place for conversations and debates. The basement is conceived as the bookstore’s subconsciousness, hosting a collection of history and philosophy books. A labyrinth made of bookshelves offers visitors their own space. On the west side of the labyrinth is the special selection from the London Review Books, a sister bookstore of Sinan Books. On the east side, a large study room features a central table that displays various objects of creative product design. Additionally, the spaces underneath the two stairs are used to create two reading rooms for individuals and pairs. The underutilised south patio was redesigned into a flower porch, using planters to create a vivid back facade for the bookstore.

Wutopia Lab believes that a monochromatic scheme cannot sufficiently depict the diversity of the period. Colour has always been closely related to people’s feelings and emotions. Relating Sinan Books to a human body, its colour should be a perceived colour, experienced in relation to the light of the day as well as one’s mental state at a given moment. The entrance features a red arcade, indicating Sinan Books’ attitude of openness. Different hues of green set off the exhibition spaces. The gold of the reading room is a hidden surprise. The black and white spaces on the fourth floor encourage one to face oneself. Lastly, on the top floor roof terrace, white marble pieces are paved to create a light and airy surface, with the texture of history and the layers of knowledge rest below. It’s a richly imaginative and artistic method of architectural practice which seeks to create miracles in everyday life. REPEATING HISTORY Pioneering and award-winning British Modernist Designer and Architect, Sylvia Reid RIBA, FCSD, is set to become a household name again, thanks to the reissue of her and her late husband John’s iconic S-Range, which they designed in 1960.

Can you please provide us with a description of your professional career?

John and I met while studying at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Architecture in London, towards the end of the Second World War and were married in 1948. Initially I worked with leading British Designers, Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew, going on to gain valuable experience as an assistant to Robin Day, preparing technical drawings for his furniture. I also worked on Hille publicity leaflets and co-designed signage for the Festival of Britain with Day and Milner Gray. John and I began working together professionally in 1949 and set up our practice as Chartered Architects and Consultant Designers in 1951. We remained in practice until 1992 and during that time designed several landmark buildings, such as – the now sadly demolished – 1966 Westminster Theatre and the Wheatsheaf pub in Camberley, Surrey – one of five postWar pubs to be recently designated Grade II status on the advice of Historic England. We also worked significantly in the arena of interior and industrial design, most notably collaborating with Stag Furniture, Rotaflex and Atlas Lighting.

What inspired you to become a furniture designer?

Although John and I started out as architects, we soon realised that we wanted to design everything that went into the buildings we designed, with the Stamford Hill Boys’ Club and innumerable pubs and coffee bars being testament to that. We were approached by Stag Furniture in 1952, which became the start of a 10year alliance with them, designing living, dining and bedroom furniture. Our passion for interiors subsequently moved us into designing other household items, such as our range of cast iron ware which we designed for Izons – and which is now on permanent display in the V&A – and light fittings.

What has been your greatest source of inspiration throughout your career?

We enjoyed the holistic approach to design and, so, good design has always been our inspiration. At the end of the War, there was no decent modern design available in the UK, so initially John and I looked to the likes of Jacobsen and the Eames, but we soon became inspired by our own work. Our work fed itself, and took us on new paths. I N E X

How do you approach your projects?

For us, the things we designed needed to be practical, usable and affordable. We always tried to be as sophisticated as possible within these constraints – a Modernist manifesto if you like. The S-Range is the perfect example of that, which is why it has become an icon of Mid-Century design.

Would you say that you have a design style? If so, how would you describe this style?

Yes, I have a design style. Simplicity has always been important as have quality, detail and affordability. My drive has always been to enable ordinary people to have access to owning good design.

What do you believe is the biggest challenge for today’s designers? There is a lot of competition today and young designers will be more acutely aware than we ever were, what other designers – both in this country and worldwide – are doing, so I think there is an increased temptation to design for show. To me, great design must be beautiful and practical.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?

The S-Range we designed for Stag – recently reissued as the John & Sylvia Reid S-Range. Its scale, simple lines and clever design details made it perfect for any setting – traditional or modern, spacious or not – and for these reasons it is as relevant today as it was in 1960. I N E X

What has been your most notable product?

The fluorescent kitchen light we designed for Atlas Lighting in 1959 introduced a completely new approach to florescent lighting design for the home. Our domestic fitting was the first of its kind and did not require a transformer or starter switch. The current was converted through a 60W incandescent lightbulb which was a clever and original piece of industrial design.

What advice would you offer to those that are considering a career in design? To take it very seriously because the market is serious. It must be a matter of being practical rather than wishing to be clever.

What can we expect to see from you over the next year?

My son, Dominic Reid OBE, RIBA, has overseen the reissue of the S-Range, in collaboration with Nicholas Radford, MD of Nathan Furniture. The reissued collection comprises all original 13 pieces of cabinet and upholstered furniture, which have been faithfully recreated to our original 1960s specifications and all carry a badge of authentication. ob developed a series of mirrored dwellings to be temporarily installed on both The Barrows, Heysham Coast and Birkrigg Common near Ulverston in Cumbria. Inspired by early Anglo-Saxon designs, the dwellings aimed to encourage viewers to consider the influence of people of the past on Morecambe Bay. Six mirrored figures interspersed with the dwellings represent the communities that once settled on this land, reminding the viewer of the people who worked the land and the sea in centuries gone by.

By using mirrored surfaces, Mulholland brings literal reflection into being, making the viewer and a distorted landscape and sky integral parts of the work. By catching glimpses of themselves, viewers see an image not only in the present, but a hint of those who may have walked in the same landscape, a vestige of the past. The dramatic sites at Heysham Head near Morecombe and with the remnants of St Patrick’s Chapel and the rock graves immediately draws one to imagine the location’s historical past. The open vista and

views across the sea further enhance this feeling of being witness to a moment in time, imagining the early settlers sailing into the bay and establishing a new home. “My artistic vision aims to connect the present-day visitor to this past world, allowing the visitors to create their own connection between themselves and the past history and heritage of the region,” explains Rob. “My artistic vision is not rigid, it’s purposely open to interpretation. The ambiguity of the forms and utilisation of unconventional materials will further enhance the visual experience.”

Talking before the project began, Rob explained: “My proposal is to create an art installation comprising a group of four small house structures based on early Anglo-Saxon design which are constructed in steel and wood and clad in mirrored stainless steel. The mirrored structures will be visible, but will also distort and alter the space. As if materialising and then disappearing, a vestige or trace of the past. Each one reflecting and edifying the surrounding natural environment,

constantly changing with the light and movement and passing seasons. Grouped close to the house structures are a small gathering of mirrored figures representing the past historical inhabitants. In response to social changes, hotel design has evolved considerably over recent years. As many hotels now market themselves as destination locations, furniture has become more aspirational and is a key element of the design plan.

hotels are more geared up than ever to leave their guests with a memorable experience. This impacts significantly on interiors as well; whether that’s in the room layout, facilities or furniture. Here Tim Armitt, Managing Director of Lyndon by Boss Design, takes a closer look.

of sofas, corner units and footstools, the possibilities are endless. Whilst the reception is still an area for checking in and out, it’s also a remote office, communal workspace and even a meeting hub for corporate travellers; hence, it’s not uncommon to find phone booths, meeting booths and touchdown spaces here – many complete with integral technology. Clusters of furniture that offer more private and personal areas for meetings or for individual work such as plush armchairs and sofas – and even bar tables or islands with stools – also fulfil these varying needs.

Guestrooms

The multifunctional reception area?

Today, hotels have to cater to the needs and whims of all types of guests; from corporate executives and conference delegates to bridal parties and weekenders. Therefore, the reception is a critical part of the hotel. It’s where guests gain their first impressions and where various social and business encounters take place. As such, it’s designed to be more fluid and flexible with creative space segmentation providing both social and corporate zones.

Naturally, such flexibility influences the choice of seating and furniture. As well as maximising space and accommodating large volumes of people, it’s important to consider comfort, flexibility and practicality. Modular seating is a popular choice for this space. From straight and curved configuration seating to more traditional options 3 9

Smaller rooms have become the norm as guests spend more time in social places. Desks are also required less in the bedroom, as people prefer to sit on chairs or on beds to work when using their laptop or tablet, or even to spend time in the reception. More than anything, hotel rooms should provide comfort – that feeling of a home away from home. Guests also expect surprises and touches of luxury. Hence, many hotels go that extra mile to add bespoke touches such as hand-stitched wall panels, bedroom headboards and ottomans, along with luxurious chaise longues and benches. Individual style and detail can be added with vertical and horizontal fluting, button detailing and specialist stitch as well as panelling facets. I N E X

Restaurant and bar

In order to woo guests, many hotels have turned their restaurants into memorable spaces with highly creative themes that take culinary experiences to new heights. Choosing the right seating and furniture here can pose quite a challenge. Not only is it important to choose pieces that maximise space to create more covers, it’s essential to offer comfort, flexibility and practicality. High tables and bar stools combine great design with functionality, and bring a casual feel to any bar or

dining area – particularly when combined with lowlevel options. They also serve to break up the eyeline of furniture. Today’s restaurant guests are also looking for a more cohesive experience; where everything from the menu and glassware to the lighting and wall decoration, work well together. Hence, many turn to bespoke furniture and seating that coordinates with the decor and introduces an element of indulgence and exclusivity. Once discounted on the basis 4 1

Of course, not everyone wants to stay connected, especially when on holiday. However, hotels now focus on keeping guests ‘plugged in’ at all costs. Indeed, it’s estimated that the average guest travels with at least three devices that require charging. As such, hotels have had to adapt to meet their needs and we now see more and more seating and furniture incorporating integral power supply, USBs and telephone chargers. Such integration is clean, seamless and aesthetically coordinates with each piece. The most successful hotel interior design schemes tend to be those that show a real understanding of what guests need and how they interact. For any space to truly work, particularly public spaces, having this awareness and understanding of guests’ needs and expectations is the key to leaving them with a memorable experience.

intage’s realisation highlights WORKSTEAD’s larger exploration of the Art Deco movement’s influence on Tulsa’s downtown area. Streamlined contours and opulent structure are complemented by jewel-like hues and warm fixtures. The venue itself sits below the First Ward Salon, an earlier WORKSTEAD project, and is set within a sleeve of subtly stepping walls and anchored by a long, low banquette to one side and stepped walnut bar to the other.

In finalisng Vintage’s interior presentation, WORKSTEAD consulted a host of different design visionaries including local millworker Eric Fransen; Los Angeles-based furniture brand Lawson Fenning and British wallpaper and paint manufacturer Farrow & Ball for the inclusion of complementary product. The rich design of such ingredients is further elevated by a selection of the studio’s iconic Signal lighting collection, generating an overall feeling of strength in form, utility and material, a central part of WORKSTEAD’s practice. The unveiling of Vintage also marks the studio’s first foray into branding – a comprehensive package was completed for the project. The resulting framework is a natural extension of the bar’s internal aesthetic and more largely reflects the desire to create a new wine destination in the American Midwest. I N E X

T

he brief for the first floor was to create a professional yet quirky space to clearly communicate the brand and tie in all the other office floors which are themed around continents. This multifunctional floor houses an employee workspace, an external meeting and hospitality venue and the main reception area. Soho Square, located in the heart of London, is an historical building which presented many challenges for the design and build team. The reception situated in the atrium was a particularly problematic area with glass walls, an 11m-high ceiling and incredibly reverberant. With several ongoing activities in the same open-plan space simultaneously, sound levels were expected to echo and become intolerable. After extensive analysis by an acoustician, the data collected defined the project scope, and through the innovative deployment of acoustic treatment the noise reduction solution was found. The design theme for this area was based around a departure lounge. Turbine-style booth seating and fuselage-suspended ceilings give the feeling of being in an airport whilst affirming TripAdvisor’s very distinguishable identity.

Soundtect created the main acoustic absorbers as a giant landscape of projecting felt fins applied to the double-storey wall. Composed of 100% polyester, 70% of which is (PET) recycled material, the individual panels are environmentally-friendly, lightweight, versatile and easily installed with hidden fixings to produce a floating effect. By coordinating the panels into the overall I N E X

design, they also complement the company’s distinct colour scheme. The fins create an undulating surface which absorb sound and eliminate the echo. Not only do they enhance sound quality, but they’re an eye-catching design feature tying in with the aviation-themed seating booths and coffee table made from an aircraft wing. The attention to detail in this project is clearly visible. ith a discerning eye and acute attention to the smallest details, Issa plays with form and proportion. Minimalism meets maximal impact through unexpected shapes and materials in pieces that are functional and eye-catching. Born to a Lebanese father, Issa spent part of his childhood in Lebanon before moving to Miami at 14. He has lived in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Milan, London, Beirut and Dubai, earning him eclectic cultural and professional experiences. Issa’s background as a multilingual global citizen has shaped his professional identity, and he uses design as method of conveying his perspectives.

“I studied architectural engineering at the University of Miami, but because of my DJing, I started out my career working in music production, which later transitioned into film and TV production,” explains Issa. “It wasn’t until after my father’s passing a few years ago that I decided to make the scary jump out of an established, stable and profitable career in media, into one in design, where I had to start from scratch – a huge risk in anyone’s book, but one I had to take since I strongly felt that this was my calling all along – something I knew deep down inside but kept postponing. I found myself gravitating towards interior design since I’m 6 5

a very visual and detail-oriented person, and soon started adding my customdesigned furniture pieces in all the projects I took, which I found most gratifying and interesting. Soon, I completed my journey by making the decision to focus on furniture and product design only, and that’s the way it’s been for the last few years, and I must say, I couldn’t be any happier. It was a good call, and the moral of this story is to always follow your heart, and don’t let fear stop you from doing what you should be doing. “I believe design is one of these talents that you either have or you don’t. Yes, you can improve it through practice and learning proper techniques, but what differentiates good designers from excellent ones is just pure, built-in talent. It has to do with your spatial imagination, your ability to create aesthetically-balanced imagery and designs. I have been interested in that since I was a child. My first drawings, my first LEGO set were all about obsessively designing houses, it’s a safety/shelter thing maybe since we travelled a lot because of my father’s work?”. I N E X

While some designs preserve an artistic style that is orientated towards nature and botanical elements, there is room to explore different styles that still utilise the mural’s power to encapsulate a space but with a different outlook. Dulux Trade, one of the UK’s leading paint brands, has revealed its coveted ColourFutures colour palettes for 2019.

ow in its 16th year, the Dulux Trade ColourFutures 2019 palette is selected to help professionals make colour and design choices for a wide variety of buildings, from commercial to education and residential. Dulux assembled a global panel of top design professionals to research trends, insights and consumer behaviours to decide on its colour of the year – a warm amber tone called Spiced Honey – and four complementary palettes that capture the theme of ‘let the light in’. The global expert panel, which this year included Jim Biddulph, Designer and materials expert, as its UK representative, married art with science to decide on the annual colour. The colour is versatile and contemporary, and complements a wide variety of interior styles with its optimistic range of palettes. Jim Biddulph said: “The panel discussed all manner of topics from the year gone, ranging from the social, political and cultural. Even with a range of unique perspectives from around the globe, the panel recognised the 8 1

valuable role that designers play, and are increasingly playing, in bringing about positive change and that ColourFutures 2019 should be a valuable part of their toolkit in doing so. The individual themes reflect this, with a set of balanced palettes that offer the headspace to carry out four of the most integral ways of being in 2019; thinking, dreaming, loving and acting.” 2018 was an unsettling and unpredictable time explained Heleen van Gent, Head of the Global Aesthetic Centre, who chairs the ColourFutures panel annually. “We were overwhelmed by the deluge of news, choices and demands upon our time, causing us to close up and retreat into spaces where we feel safe and cocooned. We pressed pause and took time to regroup. As we move forward into 2019, we find this pause has given people time to re-energise and deal with the sense of unpredictability with positive action, optimism and purpose. The redesign features a colourful update to the 135-room hotel, including a 26fthigh white jungle wall art piece in the lobby, custom furnishings and an updated rooftop pool deck with commissioned mural artwork, along with new hotel programming for guests and locals. Shoreline’s ‘nature meets neon’ theme, concepted by Army of Moon People and designed by BHDM Design, brings to life the dramatic landscape and sunsets of Hawaii with a contemporary twist – designs are a bold mix of colours and patterns, blending Hawaiian inspirations, bright colour palettes and modern shapes to create the perfect aloha stay and experience. Colour-change lighting adds to this, when the new lobby’s custom white styrene Monstera leaf installations transform from cool and refreshing in the day to colourful and electric at night, illuminated in neon.

“Our design aim for Shoreline was to create a colourful and unique experience for the millennial-minded traveller. ‘Nature meets neon’ throughout, blending the natural beauty of Hawaii’s flora and wildlife with all the colours of an eternal sunset,” said Dan Mazzarini, Owner of BHDM Design. “We’ve designed Shoreline to be the backdrop to an already exciting getaway, and for guests and the community to share memories of their visit.” The hotel boasts playful and laid-back local influence throughout, with pops of colour, artwork and original pieces – tropical wallpaper and multicoloured floors with fluorescent kinetic hallways lead to the decorated rooms. Each room is redesigned with custom carpet, bedding, drapery and furnishings, along with a ‘you are here’ topographic map of the Hawaiian islands hanging over beds. DUKE ELLINGTON THEATRE EGG

Washington D.C.’s Duke Ellington School of the Arts reopened last year following a multi-million-dollar renovation.

he modernisation project, designed by a joint venture partnership between cox graae + spack architects (cg+s) and Lance Bailey & Associates, has transformed the ageing historic national landmark into a top-tier student facility. The stunning design has struck a balance between restoring and respecting the original historic building while creating major new academic and performance spaces. The interior environment centres on a giant oval-shaped structure within the four-storey atrium – the Duke Ellington Theatre egg. Inside the egg is a full-sized 800-seat theatre complete with orchestra pit, lighting catwalks and high-performing acoustics. Advanced BIM modelling and 3D laser scanning techniques were employed for the complex design of the theatre. Once constructed, the outer shell was expertly hand-finished in Armourcoat polished

plaster by local installer ACI/Senza Fine. The design team took inspiration from piano keys for the interior, featuring crisp white wall finishes with black accents, paying homage to the iconic Musician, Composer and D.C. native Edward Kennedy ‘Duke’ Ellington. In total, over 25,000ft2 of finishes were applied to the theatre, cafeteria walls and columns over three levels. Chris Ambridge, Associate Principal at cg+s architects, commented: “The choice to use Armourcoat came at the end of an extended process of exploring many options. The decision was important since the 1 2 0

theatre is the centrepiece at the heart of the school. We found a precedent in London of a similarly complex application and quickly became comfortable that Armourcoat was the right product for our project in terms of cost, schedule and aesthetics. The smaller frames in the range are also exempt from Building Regulations (having an internal footprint of under 30m2), providing certain site criteria are met. LONDON HOTEL MAKES ROOMS MORE COMFORTABLE WITH SECONDARY GLAZING The Arch London is a majestic boutique hotel located in one of the most characterful of London districts, Marble Arch. The hotel cleverly blends Georgian architecture and inspired contemporary touches.

electaglaze had previously installed 40 secondary glazing units to guestrooms and suites overlooking Great Cumberland Place utilising a combination of its Series 20 and Series 90 heavy-duty vertical sliders. Once again, the hotel’s requirements were to improve the standards of energy and noise insulation, particularly to the suites at the front of the building. The latest installation included Series 60 tilt-in vertical sliders fitted in rooms on the third and basement floors. This bespoke unit

has tilt-in panels which is useful when windows have unequal pane sizes or if frames are needed to fit close together. On the fifth floor, rooms were treated with the Series 10 two-pane horizontal sliding unit; a slim and versatile system that provides easy access for cleaning, as well as for allimportant ventilation.

The designs are opulent in colour with patterns that capture elegance and prestige. Dunand is a jazzy geometric named after Jean Dunand, an Art Deco Artist, Designer and master of lacquer. reproduces the positive negative silhouette of Brik. The colourways are Tiger’s Eye, Armadillo, Como and Empire. Serpentine is an exuberant design that translates classic marble into the softness of carpet. The colourways are Celadon and Malachite. Clio is a small-scale, geometric motif inspired by Roman mosaic flooring and named after one of the nine Greek Muses. The colourways are Mousseux, Bone Black, Prussian and Ash. Crackle is a pattern that imitates the crackle of paint glazes or dried earth inspired by the epic landscape of the Gobi and Sahara Desert. The colourways are Fossil and Old Gold. Seizo is a fretwork geometric with a sophisticated, Modernist style. The colourways are Vermeer, Vine, Indigo and Zinc. Peter Gomez, Head of the Zoffany studio, comments: “We are delighted to be working with Alternative Flooring, who has interpreted five of our signature designs beautifully into carpets.
