Since its origins as a tent off King’s Road in 1995, 100% Design has become the benchmark event for promoting design excellence and creativity. Here, William Knight, Show Director, explains what is in store for the special upcoming 20th edition. 100% Design is the longest running contemporary design show in the UK. The show continues to attract a record number of UK and international visitors year-on-year, and this year it has increased its overall exhibition space by 20%. People come to 100% Design as they know they will be able to see new products and new ideas, and more importantly to connect with others within the design community. “It’s the calibre of high-quality exhibitors that sets 100% Design apart from other trade events,” says William. “Not just the big names, but also interesting young

design talent from around the world. A lot of our homegrown talent, from Tom Dixon to Matthew Hilton and Benjamin Hubert, all launched their careers at 100% Design. Our world-class talks programme is also key to our success, as is the editorial content across the show to make our visitor experience more engaging and dynamic.” The 2014 show celebrates the 20th edition with a star-studded line-up. International design icon Philippe Starck will open the event and kick off the talks programme curated by Claire Barratt. The show is also working with some of the UK’s most exciting design talent - both exhibitors and special feature commissions. Visitors will find engaging features and installations across the show, providing social spaces, thought provoking ideas and plenty of opportunities to come into contact with new ideas and expertise.

A celebratory exhibition called Design Kaleidoscope, curated by design writer and lecturer Gareth Williams, will feature 20 product highlights from 100% Design’s history and will become a memorable monument for the 2014 show. “I predict materials and technology to be especially popular this year, having seen a lot of specifying taking place in London as the global economy slowly recovers. Our talks programme and some of the installations in our key industry hubs this year will reflect this rising trend,” continues William. “I’m looking forward to seeing the entire exhibition come together. There is a series of complex installations which have been worked on by a series of very talented teams. It’s only at the show that you see them all come together. The buzz and activity at the show is always a highlight; we’ve got a fantastic talks programme and an amazing array of exhibitors to take in.” The leading theme of the talks programme is serendipity, exploring the role of chance in the design process, from happy accidents to experimenting with materials. Other international design luminaries present include Ross Lovegrove, Jaime Hayon, Daan Roosegarde and fashion designer Mark Eley of Eley Kishimoto, alongside exciting younger talent such as Julia Lohmann,

On the Thursday evening of the event there will be a special anniversary Pecha Kucha chaired by founder, Toyko-based architect Mark Dytham, with presentations by designers and people key to 100% Design’s 20-year history. William expresses why he is so passionate about the design community: “I was lucky to find a job working in design promotion having previously worked in politics; essentially both are about solving problems and improving things. Design is more effective than politics in many cases, but combined they can make a huge, positive difference. The opportunity of working with creative minds and with a committed, talented community has inspired me and kept me working in design for over 13 years. “It would be great to see the design community in a more prominent and constructive role in decisionmaking and policy planning. The UK has made huge strides, but often you still see design interpreted or used as a window dressing or treatment, not applied at the optimum moment. I’d certainly see the industry gaining strength, confidence and hopefully a host of brilliant caricatures to sustain it.” 100percentdesign.co.uk « INEX-ONLINE.COM

a practical addition to essential living room furniture. Contemporary coffee tables are a common centerpiece for domestic social activity. Orion from The Sofa & Chair Company is a new innovative twist on the useful furniture piece that allows for ultimate versatility. The company’s Interior Design

Consultant, Martin Slabbert, explains more: “A truly unique six-piece modular design, the Orion table offers unashamed luxury alongside versatility. Available in three different configurations; as a single segment, in an arrangement of three and as one elegant centrepiece, each individual table is light enough to move around, allowing you to change the look of an interior with ease.” Part of the British furniture manufacturer’s new capsule collection, the striking design offers useful flexibility in high-end presentation. Crafted from solid brass, the frame is complemented against the polished black wood top which displays natural variations in colour and pattern, making each piece individual. Martin continues: “Each segment is crafted in an elegant, asymmetrically flowing shape that works perfectly against the contrast of the perpendicular brass frame. If you are looking for something in between, then use three of the modules together to create a striking side table with an unorthodox shape.” This iconic piece also skillfully combines two of the most prominent design trends for Autumn/Winter 2014, with warm metallics such as bronze, copper and gold taking centre stage this season and pieces inspired by the natural beauty and sophistication of marbled stone gaining popularity. The combination is incredibly chic. The Orion table is £1995 per segment, measuring W75xD55xH30cm. From tables formed from the root of native trees and polished beautifully in polished black lacquer to a caged hexagonal frame table that maintains classic appeal, other centerpieces within the collection comprise of practical surfaces that are timeless pieces of artwork within their own rights. thesofaandchair.co.uk «

Left: This doubleheight living wall makes an impressive green statement in built-up Camden Below: Living walls have numerous benefits, from insulation to air quality Right: Green walls are gaining popularity in urban environments

London’s Viacom Studios looks lively With the fight to be the most design inspired building in London ever increasing, the Viacom Studios decided it was time to take a ‘fresh’ approach to sealing its position as one of the most unique structures in its field by installing a living wall. Here, Mike Riding, Director at Eltherington, looks at the challenge this created.

INEX-ONLINE.COM

Living walls and roofs are becoming ever more commonplace within urban areas in the UK as they offer major benefits over traditional constructions. Reducing the urban heat island effect, creating a visually engaging cityscape and ‘softening’ the appearance of a building on its immediate surroundings are just some of the reasons why living wall designs are becoming more common. It was because of these benefits and others that the designers of the Viacom Studio in Camden, North London choose a living wall that incorporated our aluminium window and door surrounds.

The UK is still some way behind the rest of Europe in the uptake of living walls and roofs. The system originated in Scandinavia and Germany and these regions still lead the way in their uptake. Projects in these countries have shown 3-10% savings on winter fuel bills and the German government even offer significant tax incentives to encourage the use of green builds. A recent study by Nottingham Trent University backed up the winter energy savings from these kinds of structures. Green walls and roofs play just as important a role in summer,

21 EXRATED

too, where the thermal enhancement seen with green roofs is even more important. The same Nottingham Trent University study demonstrated that an outside temperature of 18.4ºC translated to 32ºC under a conventional membrane and just 17.1ºC under a green roof. The high energy consumption of cooling systems means that a 5ºC temperature reduction leads to a 10% cut in air conditioning energy requirements. Thermal performance is just one of the benefits of green walls and roofs, another being the reduction in water run-off. This is a particularly important issue in London, where the waste water network is struggling to cope. For instance, a green roof usually reduces run off by 75% or more, as rain water is absorbed by the plants’ roots. The fact that green walls and roofs look appealing is good enough for many, irrespective of their building performance benefits. The designers of the Viacom Studio specified our

aluminium for the door and window surrounds principally because it is low maintenance and 100% recyclable. That helped it retain the ‘living walls’ green credentials, and abides to Jacobs Webber, the project’s architect, and its client, Taurus Littrow’s, commitment to using only sustainably sourced materials throughout this development. All the aluminium we use has a high recycled content, up to 100% in cases, and we are committed to sustainable manufacturing. Designed to create a water tight seal with the glazed areas, our window and door surrounds are

helping the Viacom Studios aim for a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating for environmental impact. With the completed 10,000m² facility housing offices and workstations, leased to some of the most well-known shows on television, including MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, it was essential for the building to make an aesthetic impact, as well as being sustainable. It is regularly visited by tourists from across the globe. We worked in close partnership with Taurus Littrow, and the project architects, to ensure that the window and door surrounds incorporated a top gutter to manage flow of water across the growing surface. The colour was a specific metallic in Polyester Powder Coating (PPC), in order to meet the projects design and maintenance aspirations. A spokesperson from Jacobs Webber Architects said: “We specified Eltherington because they were able to supply a low maintenance, aesthetically pleasing, sustainable solution for the living wall. The company was able to work with our window and doors suppliers on what was a short lead-time on a relatively constricted site in terms of vehicle access.” Green structures incorporated into a building offer many benefits such as increasing the lifespan of the weatherproofing membrane by two to three times, reducing temperature variation and protecting from UV damage. As environmental legislation becomes ever more stringent green walls and roofs will become an ever more common sight within our towns and cities. Selecting the right door and window surrounds is a critical element of making these designs work over the long term. When this is done correctly it doesn’t just enhance the thermal efficiency of the building, but also maintains the high regard that green or ‘living’ structures have with building designers. eltherington.co.uk « INEX-ONLINE.COM

dimensional steel grid structure resembling a climbing frame. The depth of the structure allows access from multiple directions in the room and acts as a hallway between the library and kitchen. Fresh white walls complement the contemporary grid composition and bring the old apartment to the 21st century. This simple and adjustable structure is a modern statement that offers an endless variety of uses. Wooden shelves and cabinets are randomly inserted within the grid to combine seating areas, storage, bookshelves and climbing frame, but the versatility of this kind of structure can be stretched to as far as the boundaries of a designers imagination allows. In the kitchen the grid integrates a mobile worktop along with drawers for hidden storage. The worktop sits on wheels and can

be moved out of the structure, allowing the whole family to prepare diner together. In the near future – once the adjacent studio will take part of the apartment – the L-shaped apartment will become a U-shaped home with a private suite for the parents. cut-architectures.com

With the winter months soon upon us, we look towards the bedroom as a safe retreat of warmth, comfort and tranquility. Here, industry experts discuss how to successfully create a room that oozes relaxation.

W

e are fast approaching the season of long nights and cold months, which will no doubt make the bedroom an appealing location for much needed rejuvenation. But with so much fabric and surfacing in one location – from bed linen and soft furnishings to wallpaper and curtains – achieving the perfect balance between pattern, tone and texture can become complicated. Nicky Mundie, Director of design studio Violet & George, explains how to use different textiles to achieve an on-trend bedroom design: “The priority when designing a bedroom is to keep it calm, comfortable and relaxing. In most areas of the house asymmetry often creates a bold statement but when it comes to the bedroom symmetry creates calm. “You may be happy to layer patterns elsewhere in the house but when it comes to the bedroom keep patterns restricted or muted. There are several ways to do this but most notably use the same pattern over and over again so that it becomes background noise.” Established in 2009, Nicky Mudie set up Violet & George as a response to the lack of originality and creativity in soft furnishing design. Nicky’s passion for textiles within interiors has led to the great success INEX-ONLINE.COM

of supplying cleverly designed soft furnishings and the finishing touches to homes both in and around London and internationally. “If you want to use a very bold or colourful pattern put it behind the headboard so that it creates a feature of the symmetry of the bed and bedside tables,” she explains. “If you are keen to have a very calm room bring pattern in on the dress cushions only - these will be moved out of the way when it comes to bedtime. “Bedding should be plain and neutral with colour, texture and pattern brought in as a feature behind the bed, on the curtains, cushions, rug or an occasional chair.” Kristina Lindhe, Creative Director at domestic fabric and interior accessories expert Lexington, adds: “I am crazy for fall and I easily

fall in love with it. You could call me a bit of a fool for fall, but I really do love the colors and the possibilities of creating a cozy feeling with all the different materials and products for the season. To snuggle up in flannel bedding, to wrap myself in a soft wool throw or take the last opportunity for dining outside makes me very happy.” Founded in 1997 by Swedish husband and wife team Tommy and Kristina Lindhe, Lexington takes American east coast spirit and combines it with the freshness of vivid colors and patterns to produce a single style multicategory business. The patterns for this season’s new collection are inspired from old classical American prints. Kristina continues: “For this season we have a very sophisticated and elegant manner of styling the master bedroom with white and gray in our high quality sateen. It has a masculine touch, both in design and in quality. This season create all these possibilities using great quality and beautiful colours.” violetandgeorge.com lexingtoncompany.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

e are seeing a revival of applied decorative details within furniture design. I have noticed that designers often emphasise detailing by the choice of alternative finishes or materials. This careful consideration is often where the greatest individuality and creativity is expressed. Indeed, we have recently launched a new collection in which we use gold and silver leaf alongside nickel and bronze inlay within the woodwork. The result is a study of movement and texture to create a collection of pieces that layer design, proportion as well as finish. Silhouettes and shapes used in a balanced and pleasing way never lose their appeal. Pieces with classic proportions continue to be desired by our discerning clientele. We have noticed a renaissance in mixing different materials together, illustrated perfectly by the pink dyed straw door panels inset into a sycamore bookcase in a library of a project in Venice by furniture designer, Tim Gosling. Antique is back - thank goodness! We still appreciate INEX-ONLINE.COM

the craftsmanship and design of yesteryear and this is made easy for us with inspirational online platforms such as 1stdibs.com. There is a renewed appreciation of design spanning 1750 to 1950, which are once again taking their place in contemporary interior design schemes. We believe a striking new piece of furniture should be able to stand its ground amid beautiful pieces such as a George III chest or a Ruhlmann item from the 1930s. To create furniture that can hold its own one needs to understand the history of design. It is only with an informed point of view that one can break the rules. Within fabric design we are noticing a playful use of scale and pattern. In the same scheme we’re seeing small designs repeated alongside over-scaled ones in the

identical pattern and colour ways. This is beautifully shown in the sophisticated collections of Soane Britain and China Seas. With regard to floor finishes, I have seen a lot of geometric patterned carpets hinting at the work of David Hicks. I also love what is being done to old threadbare rugs and carpets, where they are given a new lease of life by being reloaded in modern colours to add a contemporary feel. j-v-b.com ÂŤ

Steak of the Art Located on Cathedral Walk, Steak of the Art is a new restaurant and art gallery that occupies 4000ft2 in the bustling Harbourside area of Bristol.

INEX-ONLINE.COM

T

he venue is the brainchild of classically trained Chef and entrepreneur Steve Bowen of Knutsford, Cheshire, who has chosen to return to the West Country where his family has lived in Bristol for the past 35 years. The new concept is based on the simple steak restaurants of Paris and London but set within an artistically inspired environment that one might find in chic Barcelona. Steve, who studied at Leith’s School of Food and Wine in London, said: “The idea is to provide reasonably-priced and simple but delicious food served in a place that is exciting to dine in. Although we are majoring on steaks we are equally enthusiastic about

the other meat, poultry and fish we intend to serve.” Part of the attraction of Steak of the Art is the interior itself. Designed by James Blinkhorn, every aspect of the restaurant has been carefully thought through. The brief was to deliver five wows for the customer – one on approaching the restaurant, one on walking into the restaurant, one when moving into the restaurant area and one in the toilets! Finally, the fifth wow is the food. Major challenges included the shape of the space and structural pillars around which breath taking design had to be created. Most fixtures and fittings were bespoke firsts so furniture, flooring and features were completely new designs. The bar and booth

concepts were designed by the team and built completely from scratch. The bar arch, bespoke tables and chairs and dining booths are just some of the features that provide guests with an experience like no other. A number of artists were involved in creating the restaurant with a Moulin Rouge room and booths representing some famous moments in art history, including the iconic photograph of builders relaxing while building the Chrysler Building skyscraper in New York. Another booth features Alice in Wonderland characters carved by Simon O’Rourke - one of Europe’s top tree carvers. The art gallery is separate to the restaurant area so people can come in and look around the paintings, which are all for sale. Deliberately combined styles and artists it is a thought-provoking and exciting mix and the plan is to showcase individual artists, genres and showcase local talent. Steve is also looking for Bristol artists who are ready and willing to be creative live in the restaurant in front of diners. steakoftheart.co.uk «

Panoramic views of London from Paramount House

Above: This iconic London building has been transformed into stunning residential apartments Below: High performance window seals have achieved impressive noise attenuation

For many years 162-170 Wardour Street was the London headquarters of Paramount Studios, located at the heart of the capital’s music, film and advertising industry. Amazon Property has transformed this building into high-end residential apartments.

I

n 2011 this seven-storey building within Soho’s Conservation Area was acquired by award-winning residential developer, Amazon Property, with the intention of converting the 21,500ft2 mixed-use office/retail space into residential apartments, making this one of the capital’s most sought after officeto-residential conversions. The internal reconfiguration and refurbishment has created 15 highspecification apartments, including a luxury penthouse with panoramic views of the London skyline. Many of the original attractive features of this 1930’s designed building have been retained, including the metal casement frames with lead light glazing and timber sash windows. However, as with any city centre location offering a 24:7 society, noise has to be effectively contained if a peaceful environment is to be achieved. A solution was found using

INEX-ONLINE.COM

Selectaglaze’s bespoke range of secondary windows. The frames have high performance seals and are tailor made to ensure the tightest fit. Independent acoustic tests demonstrate very significant levels of noise attenuation, typically 45dB, and the glazing also provides much improved thermal insulation. This, together with the removal of draughts, leads to increased comfort and reduced energy demand. Over 200 horizontal and vertically sliding windows were produced in a matt black finish to complement the interior design and toughened safety glass was used throughout. The windows are fully fabricated in the factory which allows rapid installation and Selectaglaze worked closely with contractor ISG to meet a phased programme and be part of a successful and attractive development. Founded in 1966 and a Royal Warrant Holder since 2004, Selectaglaze Ltd. has considerable experience of working in buildings of all styles including Listed and traditional. The Company produces an extensive range of literature and guidance notes covering acoustics, thermal performance and added security and offers both a technical advisory service and a RIBA approved CPD Seminar to architects and interior designers. selectaglaze.co.uk enquiries@selectaglaze.co.uk 01727 837271 «

Installing timeless features, such as a fireplace, mirror or antique lighting is an appealing way of injecting tradition into a project. Fireplace expert Owen Pacey explains how to achieve the perfect balance between heritage homage and home.

ased in an iconic converted pub in Shoreditch, Owen Pacey has been sourcing, installing and producing premium original and reproduction fireplaces, lighting, mirrors and architectural salvage for over 25 years. Owen has gathered a host of high profile projects and clients from One Hyde Park to Shoreditch House; Gilbert & George to Georgia May Jagger. Owen explains: “I travel all over Europe sourcing the most unique and interesting fireplaces, reclaimed lighting and architectural salvage. I find inspiration from wherever I go, from a monastery in a tiny town in Italy to an old Citroen factory in France.

“Many urban homes are challenged with space but for every property there is a fireplace that will fit the bill. One of my tips would be to never rip out an old fireplace to make way for a replacement without getting expert guidance. If you don’t like what is already there you can often trade it in for another mantelpiece. “I am often asked about my opinion on period correctness. With fireplaces and original pieces, the INEX-ONLINE.COM

42 HEATING

general rule of thumb is to match architectural pieces to the period of a property you live in. I’ve been asked to take stunning antique fireplaces out of houses that shouldn’t come out and it breaks my heart. You are just destroying the room and the value of your home. “In my opinion, there are no exceptions to this rule, but you can make the fireplace of your dreams suit a scheme as long as you choose the correct scale for the room. It’s easy to swap a tiled Victorian fireplace for a cast-iron arch. It is not about cost but what looks right. “I think a fireplace brings drama and glamour to a room but most importantly, you’ve got to love what you are investing in. I love seeing fireplaces in every room and I’m seeing a returning trend of installing a fireplace in kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. Fireplaces are the design focus for many rooms and I’d love people to see their power and potential. “From a Victorian townhouse to

a country cottage, a fireplace can add serious value to a home, just think if there were two identical properties on the same street, one has a fireplace that complements the period of the home and one doesn’t, which one would you chose? Investing in a working fireplace this winter can ignite a property’s value by up to 5%, add an aesthetic glow of a real fire and save on heating bills too. “Fireplaces come in a range of prices from Victorian grates to 18th-century marble, priced from £750 to £100,000. Renaissance London are now introducing handmade, professionally aged reproductions with immaculate carving and attention to detail at a much lower price point. This is important as often pairs of period fireplaces are required for a design project or large room, they typically cost a third of that of an authentic period piece - but can look just the same.” Owen’s Shoreditch showroom, called Renaissance, has just been completely rebuilt to showcase its collection of reproduction fireplaces. With a stock carefully sourced from around Europe – anything from the 16th Century to the present day, Queen Anne to Victorian and one-off pieces bespoke or reproduction – it is an eclectic collection of antique fireplaces, as well as specialists mirrors, lighting and eclectic salvaged artefacts. renaissancelondon.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM
