Greens, pastels and geometrics Stay abreast of the latest trends with Inex’s design forecasts. This month Inex spoke to bespoke furniture specialists I & JL Brown about the key furniture trends to look out for in 2014. Chalky pastels Pastel shades dominated the catwalk this year for London Fashion week and were seen most noticeably at labels such as Preen and Emilia Wickstead. We are now seeing this trend slowly creep into interiors, with glass accessories and furniture really benefiting from these beautifully soft tones. Choosing a different chalky pastel colour for a traditional Windsor Chair table seating arrangement will add an elegant design touch as seen in I & JL Brown’s lifestyle kitchen images. Geometric Pattern Geometric pattern interiors are set to be big for 2014. I & JL Brown’s bespoke upholstery service enables customers to choose from any fabric so you can dare to be as brave as you wish with pattern. For a subtle nod to the geometric trend, go for a patterned back and plain front for on-trend furniture piece that will suit any room scheme. Green Botanical greens will be much more prevalent in 2014 and in a myriad of shades and textures; from plush velvets to smooth leather finishes. Gold and green are a perfect match as seen on the Turner and Marlow Chair where gold colour upholstery nails have been used to great effect by contrasting beautifully with both the dark and light green shades. Green is the ideal colour for those looking to brighten and refresh tired rooms. brownantiques.com «

Quality, style and panache: Guinevere It is impossible to walk into Guinevere and not fall in love with something. With a philosophy for mixing different styles and eras of furniture together, this is no ordinary antique shop. Having just celebrated half a century of business, editor, Emily Smith, spoke to owner Marc Weaver about Guinevere’s interior heritage and unique attitude to sourcing antique value.

Y

oung French hat designer Genevieve Weaver came on a short trip to London in 1953, fell in love with her English teachers son and made London her home. With a passion for changing her furniture, she bought her first antique in 1959. She adored the concept of living with a beautiful piece and then selling it on to update the look of her home. In 1963, she opened Guinevere at the less glamorous end of Chelsea’s Kings Road, creating a foundation for the fashionable, high-end interior haven that has built up around it. Guinevere has spent the last 50 years growing organically, acquiring more space to become the loveable labyrinth that it is today. “What we do in the shop is not specialise in any one period or style because that’s not what interests us – we’ve got some Neolithic pots somewhere, which can be up to 4,000 years old, alongside mid-century modern and all things in between,” explains Marc. “We also have a small and limited line of items that we actually make and this is always changing, because we like to keep it interesting.” Following Genevieve’s unexpected death in 2000, the shop is now owned by her sons Marc and Kevin Weaver, along with Marc’s wife Heather. They source the shop contents, traveling all over the world to find those perfect pieces that spark an interest. “We look for things that we like,” continues Marc. “That’s the starting premise. Quality, style and value for money, all these things are very important. A nineteenth-century Louis XV style chair has one price, but an eighteenthcentury Louis XV period chair has another. Both look the same but have different values, so value is crucial. But if an item was ugly a hundred years ago then it’s still ugly now. Tastes change and I have found myself looking at things that I used to think were rather displeasing and now I like them, but the fundamentals remain and most of what was ugly then is still ugly now. That’s how we work – it’s got to be pleasing to our eye and that’s why people come here because they like the things that we like. “The way we display in Guinevere is that we are INEX-ONLINE.COM

constantly looking for ways to put different styles, periods, textures and colours together. So, a wild piece of Murano furniture from the 1960s with Han Dynasty, contemporary and English Regency items placed on top is a complete mix of styles, but it works! It’s both wild and traditional. My mother wrote a book in the 1990s called ‘Antiques for Today’s Interiors’ and that’s exactly what we do. We want things that people can use and that we can enjoy. Obviously you can enjoy buying and collecting, but what’s the point in having money if you can’t have fun as well!” The shop is a complete mixture of contrasting items styled to complement and honour design heritage. These items come from all over the world, from all sorts of different periods and styles and that is what is so absorbing about this building – its irresistible charm and intimate indulgence. Guinevere redefined how antiques are viewed, for here importance is not the rare or precious object to be put on a pedestal, but pieces INEX-ONLINE.COM

that are appealing because of their character and style, not solely for their historical pedigree. “The joy for me is that you can’t repeat items and each piece is unique and interesting,” says Marc. “At one point we were doing reproductions and I found the quality control and reordering a contradiction as to why I’m in this business. I started out to do interesting things, to have interesting pieces and to deal with interesting people, which just wasn’t happening when I was working with reproductions. So we keep the reproduction line limited and that keeps it interesting.” The principles behind Guinevere’s collection allows for replicas and pieces as contemporary as the 1980s. “If they are nice enough we’ll have them,” says Marc. “Providing we know they are replicas and the value is proportionate.” Guinevere also has its own line of bespoke designs, from a vast array of gorgeous trunks that can be produced in a multitude of variations, utilising antique

materials, to lampshades made from sari’s and traditional Indian dhurries. Nothing here is wasted and everything is reinvented and given a new chance to be adored. When Marc’s wife Heather started working at the shop, Genevieve was eager to share antique textile knowledge with her, as she knew her son’s had little interest in this area. Heather seized the opportunity for potential in this area and now her pièce de résistance is the shop’s textile room, where she works hard to create modern ways of using old fabrics from all corners of the world. For Heather, it’s not just a question of buying textiles, but of reinventing them. From African Yoruba cloths to Indian saris, vintage woolen welsh blankets and Scottish tartan plaids, all are given a fresh new life and arranged in this lusciously inviting space at the back of the shop. has even made hot water bottle covers! “There are a lot of lost techniques that just can’t be done anymore because of lack of interest and no one can remember how to recreate some of these fabrics,” continues Marc. “But of course it’s the same across the board and the problem with movements to keep them alive is that the fundamental techniques have been lost. For example, people come in wanting old napkins with beautifully intricate embroidered initials, but the embroidery is impossible to recreate now as it would take an age! We do always have a big collection of antique embroidered napkins though.” So how can somewhere like this, which is curated so heavily on sentimental and personal interest remain on-trend? “It’s not so much about being affected by the trends

Images: The window displays at Guinevere allow passers-by – and those stuck in Kings Road traffic – a visual feast of flamboyance and grandeur. and just doing what we like, but that our trends are constantly changing and evolving,” explains Marc. “We are finding our own way and our directions are constantly changing and hopefully prevailing trends will also be going in the same direction.” Quality and value are hugely important within the whole industry and especially fundamental for antiques. So, how long does it take Marc and his team to put figures to items? “About 50 years,” beams Marc. “We work in the areas that we tend to know and understand and if we work with something that we don’t know the value of then we look at it like anyone else would and ask ourselves what we think it’s worth.” For further insight into this unique shop, the new book, ‘Guinevere - The First 50 Years’ is now available. guinevere.co.uk «

20 LAMINATES

Laminates by Egger The production of laminate in the UK has become a highly lucrative business with more and more players trying to offer the best collection to out do the competition. Egger has carved out a niche as a leading manufacturer of chipboard in the UK and EU but their additional products are often forgotten about. September saw Egger launch a newly extended range of laminates that will really intensify their product offering.

urprisingly, not a lot of people know that Egger is one of Europe’s largest producers of laminate; they tend to be known for their decorative wood panels and edging yet they have a production capacity of 27,000,000m2. But now, with a recently extended Zoom range, Egger can offer 237 laminate decor options available on a just-in-time basis. And the benefits don’t stop there. The Zoom collection started as a range of 108 decors available in matching melamine faced boards, laminate and edging which still stands but with major investment Egger are now able to offer a range of 237 laminates. These laminates INEX-ONLINE.COM

fit into the current colour worlds developed by Egger with a mix of exotic woodgrains, metal effects, rough cut woods and intensive uni colours. With texture no longer a secondary consideration after colour choice, Egger laminates offer more depth and realism than they ever have done before. State of the art printing processes have allowed Eggerlaminates to offer a true alternative to real materials such as linen, leather and concrete. Laminates combine extreme resistance and an attractive design. The multi-layer composition and the materials that are used guarantee high surface quality across all decors. As part of the Zoom

matching material offer Egger laminates are a versatile material that can be specified for various applications beyond classic furniture construction and furniture design. The last thing you want is to have your specification changed at the last minute due to lack of availability. Egger laminates are stocked in depth nationally via a network of distributors, with back up stocks held by Egger themselves. Therefore no projects need to be delayed or specifications changed. Being able to source your laminate and board requirements from the same distributor means only one order, one delivery and one invoice. 0845 606 8888 egger.co.uk ÂŤ

The Chelsea Gardener on Sydney Street, London, has long been an advocate of ‘outdoor living’. The inspiring garden centre was established in the early 1980s by two brothers who shared the vision of the garden being another ‘room’ of the home and it seems that they weren’t alone. Today we see many artisans and designers creating furniture and accessories for the garden that wouldn’t look

The Chelsea Gardener spoke to Inex about incorporating furniture and accessories to transform outdoor spaces into an extension of the home. Head of Product, Andrew Kyte, comments, “We’ve seen incredible developments in terms of materials and technology. We now have upholstered furniture that can remain outside all year round, such as the new Ibiza range from Skyline. This range also offers a fabulous range of outdoor lights which require no wiring and can be moved around the garden.” In order to make the most

of your outside space all year round, The Chelsea Gardener recommends installing atmospheric lighting on multiple controls so that specific plants, trees or sculpture can be highlighted, allowing for garden enjoyment and admiration from inside the home. Choose interesting statement planters that act as practical works of art in an outside space. From traditional to contemporary there is a great choice of textured and coloured finishes, all of which create a strong visual impact. Think about extending exterior enjoyment as the temperature drops. Firepits have been around for a while and 2014 will see a wealth of exciting new designs coming to market. A popular recent trend is to mimic grand drawing rooms by installing an exterior stone fireplace along with chimney breast. To complete the look, discover the impact of adding an outside rug into the scheme. As with any interior, a rug complements and adds a special finishing touch, therefore enhancing a homely

Whether opting for stone or metal, a water feature can enhance an outside space, act as a focal point and create a calm atmosphere. The new designs from Tristan Cockerill combine contemporary abstract forms with traditional slate. There is also a good range of fibreglass options that are an ideal solution for roof terraces where there may be issues with weight. The Chelsea Gardener is the UK stockist for Belgian company Domani which, in addition to their hand made planters, create extraordinary water features. Henry Cilliers who manages The Chelsea Gardener’s bespoke and specialist product offering, The Collection, says, “We help our clients to achieve a totally unique outdoor space. They may take inspiration from a garden they have visited but they’re all seeking something extraordinary and different for their own space. Our landscaping department offers the opportunity for a complete redesign and can specify bespoke

pieces from The Collection. Likewise, if they have fallen in love with a feature but are unsure how to incorporate it into their scheme, we can advise.” In their quest for creating beautiful outside ‘rooms’, The Chelsea Gardener continues to source exciting and inspiring products from around the world. Working with wellestablished names as well as individual artists, they discover and provide the best selection of furniture, water features, planters, lighting and art. Many of the items can be customised and a bespoke service is also available to help create a truly unique space. chelseagardener.com «

S

pecialising in luxury hotel interiors, Angela Amesbury works extensively for the Hand Picked Hotels group. Part of the prestigious group, Bailbrook House is a four-star country house hotel in Bath that recently underwent a £10mil refurbishment. The jewel in its crown is the historic Mansion House which, following a total upgrade, now offers thirteen individually decorated feature rooms and suites. We recently caught up with Angela about the project. “I have always been interested in architecture and in particular old buildings and I think that is what inspired me to become and interior designer, especially as

the two disciplines should work together. To create a luxury hotel environment is dependent on many things, but the initial impact must be warm and welcoming and not over-designed. That way, the details become apparent gradually. “As with all projects I work on for Hand Picked Hotels each property has to be treated individually. There was no specific brief but I was familiar with what the owner, Julie Hands, liked. As the property has been listed for some time, many of the original architectural features are still in situ, so the task was to compliment these rather than keeping too rigidly to the period style, as otherwise it can start to look like a museum. “My favourite area of the final

design is the Cloisters Restaurant, as it is a fabulous architectural space. This area was a store when we started the project and the stone vaulted ceiling was painted. The ceiling has been painstakingly restored along with bespoke light fittings and ironwork balustrading, making it an interesting space. The loggia alongside had not been painted, being an outdoor space, so we retained the weathered look on the stone which adds great atmosphere.” Commenting on her choice of And So To Bed for this project Angela said, “We have used And So To Bed before at another Hand Picked Hotel. Their products are very well designed and made and are robust enough for use in a hotel

environment. What makes the And So To Bed range so special is the huge choice of design and finish, so that that you can individualise the suites, which in a Country House hotel is always a good feature.” “My style is traditional, but with an emphasis on the design not dating too quickly. I have taken in a lot of advice over the years, but I think the most important consideration to have when starting a project is to be very well prepared, then you can efficiently keep control of everything once on site. There are bound to be unforeseen problems that occur, but if you have your end vision in sight, these can always be overcome.” andsotobed.co.uk bailbrookhouse.co.uk « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Tate is enormously grateful for the very generous support from Outset that has allowed us to add many important works to the national collection over the past ten years. We are once again excited to be able to select work from Frieze Art Fair in London, so that a broad public at Tate can experience new art as it emerges.” Awarded to the most innovative gallery stand at the fair, the Stand Prize is selected by international curators and critics. Winners of

the Frieze London Stand Prize 2013 were Cabinet, London, who were awarded £10,000. For the fifth year Champagne Pommery sponsored the prize which was judged by a panel of international curators: Michelle Cotton, Head of Programmes, First Site Colchester; Defne Ayas, Director Witte de Witte Center for Contemporary Art and Giovanni Carmine, Director Kunsthalle Sankt Gallen. The fair had strong institutional attendance, with over 80 groups from the world’s major museums, including those from Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and Spain. Visiting museum groups included: Art Institute Chicago; Delaware Centre for Contemporary Arts; The Hermitage, St. Petersburg; LACMA; MoMA, New York; MACRO, Rome; Art Gallery of Ontario and The Tate Americas Foundation. friezelondon.com «

ith paint being one of the easiest and most economical ways to completely change or freshen a room scheme, people are being bolder than ever before when experimenting with colour and paint effects. From bold primaries, inky dark shades, and eye-pleasing pastels. We are seeing a surge in popularity towards greys and blues in particular, with all tones being explored, from indigo to aqua; silver to graphite. These shades work well together, but also complement many other colour schemes. Fun experimentation, such as drenching the ceiling in colour as a surprise focal point, are becoming increasingly popular. However, try not to use too many colours on architectural features like ceiling roses and cornices as this can look fussy and detract from the inherent beauty of the feature. If painted ceilings are a little too bold, try painting mouldings in complementary tones (this works especially well with pastels) or experimenting with multi-colour walls or furniture, for example painting shelves in varying shades of cool blue. An all over pastel scheme, usually associated with ‘traditional’ room styling can look fresh and modern when paired with pure whites, modern accessories and framed graphic art. If you lean towards a traditional style, pair pastels with cream wrought iron furniture such as beds and vintage touches, for a look that is both pretty and understated. Combine three or four colours in a room scheme to create greater INEX-ONLINE.COM

Sanderson has launched their new colour card where the design team chose to present 140 subtle on-trend shades. Carefully selected to work in harmony with the core fabrics and wallpapers, these fresh hues range from zesty limes, through delicate pastels, to cool blues. visual interest and for a more sophisticated overall impression. To maximise light and space, use the lightest colour on the largest area. Painting skirting boards, windows and other woodwork a contrasting darker colour will make the walls appear even lighter. For multi-level houses consider using a darker tint on the lower floors and a progressively lighter tint from the same colour group on each floor as you ascend. This INEX-ONLINE.COM

creates the sense of each floor becoming brighter and more airy the higher you get. Carefully evaluate the colour combination in relation to popular painting styles. A traditional combination of contrasting coloured walls with lights, often white, woodwork makes the main colour look more intense. Two, three or four shades combined in a scheme enhance the feeling of space. A monochromatic scheme offers a variety of benefits: it helps to make any defects less obvious; it can make a room seem larger; and it creates a sense of calm. With the focus less on the architecture of room and more on its contents, a monochromatic scheme also offers a clear and

uncluttered backdrop for furniture, fabrics and wall art. Alongside paints don’t forget to experiment with printed and textured fabrics: Bold and brave prints are on trend and a cleverly chosen new season print upholstered on a sofa, can add an exciting accent to the room. Equally textured velvets and weaves are another interesting visual element. sanderson-uk.com

Bedroom trends Bespoke furniture specialists Neville Johnson share expert insight into important bedroom design considerations. Obviously style and taste is the main consideration. Is this a space merely to sleep in and store clothes or a haven in which to reflect or read? Is there a need for a study area or dressing table? The position in which to place the bed is a major consideration and will often affect other important decisions. The bed position may be determined by cultural or religious beliefs, whilst many merely opt for where it ‘feels’ best. Practical considerations such as how many people will be using the room must also be thought through. Bespoke storage solutions are often the best. Assisting the homeowner in defining storage requirements and then creating a furniture facility to meet these

with the space available is fundamental for bedroom design functionality. By utilising a bespoke furniture manufacturer, a ‘home’ for each storage need can be provided and often using areas that ‘standard product’ manufacturers are unable to. Examples of this would be ‘sloping ceilings’, under bed storage, awkward corners and high level wardrobes to accommodate both daily and long term storage. The quality of the material is the most important consideration when it comes to dust, as it will often adhere to a pitted finish product. High gloss finishes will often show finger marks easily and therefore should be avoided to maintain a pristine clean look. You can never light a room as efficiently as the sun, so think of electric lighting as an atmospheric enhancer

with the ability to create a range of environments. A dimmer switch for the main central light is vital to changing atmosphere. Fitting tungsten or fluorescent strips in the wardrobe or units that come on when you open the door is a very useful lighting addition, as well as using directional lights to highlight the room’s focal features. Although each lighting type should be controlled separately to prevent the room from looking like a retail showroom. nevillejohnson.co.uk «

Sleep preview Sleep, Europe’s number one hotel design event, is back for 2013 with a host of new features and international exhibitors to attract even more of the decision makers and influencers who are shaping the sector today.

INEX-ONLINE.COM

Sleep ensures each year’s show has an innovative feel by introducing new exhibitors alongside perennial favourites. In 2013, nearly one-third of the 130 suppliers will display their products and services for the first time at Sleep, including numerous from America and Hong Kong as well as throughout Europe. A particularly exciting addition this year is the Newcomers Gallery highlighting first-time participants. The conference programme explores fresh frontiers in hotel design with topics selected to spark audiences’ imaginations. A session on Contemplative Design will invite an audience of hotel designers, architects, operators and developers to discover how to create experiences that offer an antidote to the hectic pace of 21st century living. Global Color Research, a leading authority on colour trends, will reveal which tones are going to feature in fashionable design and why; while Grohe will lend its expertise in a

comprehensive look at the latest developments in bathroom design. In another sought-after session, Sleep Hotel contenders will be in the spotlight, explaining the inspiration behind their room set designs in a bid to win the coveted Sleep Hotel award. And ‘Rapid Eye Movement’ returns this year, with six quick-fire presentations using the Pecha Kucha format delivering bursts of novel ideas, concepts and viewpoints from industry leaders including JeanMichel Wilmotte of Willmotte Assocs, Sigurlaug “LauLau” Sverrisdottir, ION Hotel, and Seth Rosenbaum from Visto Images.

The Sleep Hotel competition tempts designers to dream-up and, in partnership with fit-out experts, construct a hotel room that could be viable in an actual property. Each space will depict a “newly renovated” suite that will be judged by a panel of foremost industry experts. This year, the brief presented to the designers is to style a room within a hotel that was originally constructed during the Pop Art era of the 1960s. During a free soirée on the first evening of Sleep, the champion will be divulged from the Sleep Bar. The hotspot where the industry’s

movers and shakers mix and mingle, this bar adopts a new persona each year. For 2013, imaginative interiors studio Nous Design is inventing its new style. “We are developing a flowing mesh structure in a continuous form which expresses the confluence of new hotel design ideas, products and services that is synonymous with Sleep. The structure will identify the bar as a place to gather and draw people in. On one side, it will jet towards the conference theatre and on the other it will act as the portal to Sleep Hotel.” says Nir Gilad, Creative Director of Nous Design. The European Hotel Design Awards, with which Sleep is closely affiliated, is widely acknowledged as the foremost pan-European hotel architecture and design awards programme. A gallery at the exhibition will feature the winning entries, revealed at the awards dinner on the night before Sleep opens. thesleepevent.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Hot Box recommended a DRU 44 cast iron multifuel stove in one of the barns and two DG Vidar Triple wood stoves in the other properties. The Vidar Triple has glass on three sides which creates an impressive, panoramic flame picture. The stoves perfectly compliment the rustic style of the barns and, because of their variable flue options, they can be installed anywhere in proximity to an outside facing wall.
