eptember was a busy month for the UK design industry as London burst with innovative and exciting new products during London Design Festival. It was also an exciting month for Inex as we launched our first digital magazine, new app and formed a partnership with SBID. As we take a moment to recover from September’s buzz, I welcome you to the October issue of Inex Magazine where we unveil new trends and look towards the changing seasons. In this month’s issue we celebrate autumn and investigate the various ways that colourful ambience filters through design. Portuguese brand Insidherland releases a furniture collection that reflects trees, leaves and nature, Carol Parry from Arboreta discusses how to make the most of a winter garden design and we look at the on-trend patterns and colours exposed during London Design Festival. I am thrilled to announce Inex’s official affiliation with the Society of British Interior Designers, which not only creates and measures the interior design professional trading standards through practice, knowledge and science, but which is also the national representative organisation to the European Council of Interior Design and Architecture. I hope you enjoy this issue. e recently spoke to Decorex’s brand manager, Simone du Boir, about what she thought would be popular at this years London Design Festival: “For me a love of colour and beautiful print has never gone ‘out of fashion’ and slowly over the last couple of years the blanket of taupe that encapsulated our industry has been receding. I hope to see a strong resurgence of colour, print and texture, alongside natural elements of wood, metal and glass used in exciting new and contemporary interpretations.” Simone could not have been more right and the design season saw yellows and greys take centrestage, where this statement tones

The fragmentation and deconstruction of the designs transform historical research into a new contemporary graphic language, creating a highly original, elegant product which is very much on-trend. The Artichoke was designed in 1958 by Poul Henningsen for the Langelinie Pavillonen restaurant in Copenhagen, where it still hangs today. The fixture provides 100% glare-free light. The 72 precisely positioned leaves form 12 unique rows of six leaves each. They illuminate the fixture as well as emitting diffused light with a unique pattern. The gold version is perfectly on-trend, providing decorative and comfortable lighting. teve began his career in the tiling industry and opened his first shop in the early 1980s when he founded Paris Ceramics. To break with the ubiquitous quarry tiles and mass produced 6” square bathroom ‘splash back’ tiles, Steve launched first his reclaimed antique stone and terracotta floors and then a wave of handmade products which celebrated ceramic craftsmanship and provenance. Not seen anywhere in Britain before, he forged enduring relationships with leading designers and architects in Britain, USA and Europe who all demanded his products for their most prestigious clients and innovative projects.

He launched Decorum Est in October last year, along with founding partner David Abrams, to offer a service that they felt could not be found anywhere else. “We are not just commissioned for our specialist expertise in rare decorative surfaces, but also consultation services that include sourcing and provenance for unique and rare materials, colour studies and historical research,” explains Steve. “We launched Decorum Est to provide customers with a unique, tailored service like no other in the market. From sourcing the rarest materials to the implementation of the most complex and intricate designs, we work with our

clients and architects from the outset of a project to ensure a wholly collaborative process. We use a revered network of highly skilled craftsmen from around the world, each with unparalleled expertise in their field, which enables us to realise any project no matter how complex or extraordinary.“ Steve and David worked closely with interior designer Anita Rosato to transform The Park Tower Knightsbridge hotel’s lobby, bar and lounge areas to create opulent public areas that would “wow” guests staying at the hotel. “We employed our signature Decorum Beige marble for the lobby floor and lift, an established and beautiful

We finished the reception desks in the lobby with Maroon Emperor, an elegant Spanish marble with chocolate brown colouring and cream veining, and Belgium Blue stone for the external floor of the hotel’s forecourt, a material synonymous with timeless quality that was also used for Burberry’s flagship store on Regent Street,” continues Steve. “When creating a luxury hotel environment, the choice of materials and how they are employed is paramount as well as ensuring that it is fit for purpose as well as looking beautiful. Stones, for example, need to be really dense with a water absorption rate of around 0.2 so that the stone is hard enough and therefore practical

for a high traffic area. Only then can you think about its aesthetic and the finishing touches.” In order to produce only the very best in materials and craftsmanship, Steve has travelled to the furthest corners of the world for the past three decades to discover the very best craftsmen around. Their services include sourcing and provenance for unique and rare materials, colour studies and historical research. Working with talented craftsmen and artisans in Britain too, he is constantly innovating and pushing boundaries to design in almost any natural surface material, accessing techniques from many different cultures which are now extremely rare and practiced only by very small numbers of craftsmen. “Alternative flooring materials are on the rise, especially concrete derivatives which can be made from a mould. They can replicate virtually any texture and, because shapes and designs can be set within the moulds, they are a great material to work with and I see them being a real trend in 2014. “At Decorum Est, we make organic shapes from these moulds, like the scales of fish, which can produce truly opulent floors. Another key trend is using different materials, like liquid metal on

year. From fashion to textiles and flooring, pattern will be everywhere in 2014.” Decorum Est opened a flagship store on London’s King Road last year and have since opened a second in Petworth, West Sussex. “We are always looking to experiment with different products and materials, so you can expect to see some really fantastic collections launching over the coming months,” says Steve. “Early next year we are launching Hollywood, a collection inspired by 1940s Hollywood glamour that I think will be hugely successful. We are also hoping to create a diffusion line of furniture, collaborating with a furniture label to surface their tables, desks and coffee tables for example with our rare materials.” When asked what piece of advice his career has benefited from, Steve answered: “Always trust in your own conviction and try not to be influenced by those around you.” decorum-est.co.uk «

Jamie’s Trattoria

B

RESTAURANT

lacksheep, the awardwinning international design agency, unveils its work for Jamie Oliver’s newest restaurant venture, Jamie’s Trattoria. This is the tenth restaurant Blacksheep has designed for Jamie Oliver over a four-year period and also marks the fifth brand in the Jamie’s legacy. Already a wellestablished brand, Jamie’s Italian wanted to create a smaller, more intimate dining experience for their new venture in Richmond. They aspired to create something special that would reflect a very local independent feel but still celebrate that classic Jamie’s charm. The Blacksheep team were tasked with a no ‘design approach’ as the brand sought to create something relaxed and laid back that would appeal to the local community. Key to the success of this was the layout of the restaurant itself which combined a range of different seating options, such as booths, an informal lounge area and a bustling shop front, catering for those wanting the typical Italian feast with all the trimmings, to those just nipping in for a coffee or a gelato. Lead Designer, Emma Freed of Blacksheep, commented on the evolution of the project; “One of the biggest challenges on the project was that it had a tight schedule which meant that some aspects of the build and the design were actually being implemented simultaneously. Although we didn’t fully appreciate it at the time, this process in itself actually served to add to that slightly ‘scattered’ charm we were trying to create. Our vast experience of working with the Jamie’s brand meant we were well aware of Jamie Oliver’s passion for all things authentic and natural, which underpinned much of what followed. “We sourced the W/C cubicle doors from a salvage yard in Dorset, tiles from a local church and made the booths from reclaimed scaffolding planks. We added layer INEX-ONLINE.COM

upon layer of different reclaimed materials from local antique suppliers, adding novelty items such as Jamie’s own pictures and vintage pieces from his warehouse, until the desired effect was created. Nothing matched, it felt much like one’s home would feel – a journey – Jamie’s Trattoria was born.” Other key design elements were used to ensure the restaurant fully integrated into the community. Wallpaper inspired by the dear in Richmond Park, designed by Jamie’s Creative Director, Barnaby Purdy, and the use of local noticeboards, book exchanges and board games all combine to reinforce the local look and feel. The ‘no frill’ design had to appeal to a broad spectrum of people across the local community, meaning that everyone could enjoy the Jamie’s experience from families, to couples, to groups of friends, big or small.

Tim Mutton, CEO & Founder of Blacksheep commented: “The inception of Trattoria itself came as no surprise to me, as more and more of today’s modern brands are quickly realising that less is more and that in a consumerdriven marketplace, demand is high for venues that support that independent and local vibe. People like to feel that a restaurant is ‘their’ restaurant, a home away from home and I think Jamie’s Trattoria captures the beauty of this movement in restaurant dining perfectly.” Justin Hardy, Director of Design and Development for Jamie Oliver says : “We have worked with Blacksheep for years now and were especially impressed with their interpretation of the Trattoria concept and its execution and project delivery.” blacksheep.uk.com «

Autumnal furniture Inex unveils the greatest iconic furniture accessories still prevalent in today’s design world all thanks to a little contemporary twist. This month, an autumnal twist on the cabinet. As the design community continues to come up with innovative ways to bring the outside inside, Portuguese brand Insidherland have created a range of furniture that reflects trees, leaves and nature. The brand was created by architect Joana Santos Barbosa only last year and exhibited at this year’s 100% Design. “I draw memories to create what I have never seen,” explains Joana. “My mission is to tell stories through art pieces with function. Like a painting or a sculpture, an Insidherland furniture piece gives shape to personal memories and arouses emotions in those who experience them.” Five ‘freetops’ on top of ‘trunks’ in polished copper, form an imposing INEX-ONLINE.COM

grove with the splendor of autumn colours in a mysterious creation where a high gloss finish forms The Special Tree. It is described as a tree in which two lovers wrote the promise of an everlasting love; a small tree on the bank of a lake that stands out as the center of a geometrized composition. As in the autumnal palette, each one of the ‘trees’ of this creation has its appearance and its colour, dialoguing with one another in a smooth degrade that celebrates the harmony of the season. The craftsmanship on exotic roots and leaves emphasized the rich tonal variations and creates rippled that remind us of the wind flow among the branches causing the swirl fall of

dry leaves on the water. In a jewelry work, the organic base in polished copper appears to be a piece of damp earth near the lake. It is chiseled with five types of fallen leaves, each one of the species, a work that is repeated in the carved recording of the creation’s name in the ‘trunk’ of The Special Tree. Inside the volumes, the tone of warm beams of sunlight piercing through the trees is captured in the high gloss satinwood finish punctuated by glass shelves. Inside of The Special Tree, small wavy copper ‘branches’ were designed to appear to be levitating while lifting the shelves. insidherland.com «

Energy efficient wallpaper Walls in buildings absorb lots of heat which then escapes outside so heating a room up is not as quick as it should be. When secondary glazing was introduced, it was seen as an energy efficient way of preventing heat from escaping. Andrew Simpon, Managing Director of Anaglypta, spoke to Inex about the benefits of using energy efficient wallpaper.

Left: Thermally efficient wallpaper can also help to prevent mould and condensation problems, and in many cases alleviate

T

hermal wallpapers put insulation to work precisely where it can be most beneficial, on the inside surfaces of your walls. This means that rooms heat up faster, and it helps to combat mould and condensation, as well as smoothing and reinforcing damaged or textured walls. “One of the most impressive aspects of the thermal liner is its ability to drastically improve the warm-up time in a given room. Older homes, especially those with a solid brick wall construction consume a lot of energy to bring the room up to a comfortable ambient temperature, due to the walls acting like a sponge and soaking up the heat. Thermal liner acts like a barrier between the solid cold mass of brick and the room INEX-ONLINE.COM

them completely

air. This extra had wearing layer effectively helps to repel heat back into the room, helping it reach the desired room temperature faster. “Living spaces that have a thermostatically activated central heating system will see further gains in energy saving, as the warm-up process will take place several times with a given cycle, so the weather will dictate to a huge extent as to when the heating is required. “As the thermal lines traps heat at the surface of the wall and raises the temperature, it also significantly reduces the chances of condensation forming, which in turn inhibits mould growth. Condensation and mould can be especially prevalent around windows and outside facing walls that are directly exposed

to the weather. The thermal lines doesn’t have to be used on every wall, it can be used just on a problem wall.” In the summer months when houses are required to be kept cooler, the thermally efficient wallpaper works in reverse, especially in buildings with air conditioning, as it traps the cool air at the wall’s surface, reducing the cost of air conditioning usage. The wallpaper is also great for damaged and cracked walls, providing a smooth surface once again. For walls which have been textured previously and costly and time consuming to remove, use the wallpaper to also achieve a smooth surface that can be painted or lined, time and time again. anaglypta.co.uk «

INEX-ONLINE.COM

Despite the change in season, it is still possible to create an outdoor space that can be enjoyed whatever the weather. A well-designed garden room with a strong structure can act as a living space all year round. Carol Parry from Arboreta, the oak frame design and manufacturing company, explains how best to incorporate this in a design: “Designing the garden room with low-height walls rather than the glazing running the full-length of the structure will provide the space with an added feeling of warmth for

a cosy environment even through the winter. Dwarf walls still enable you to have clear, panoramic views of the outside space, but create the impression that the garden room is part of the main property, rather than an add-on extension.” Autumn is the best time for planting, so make sure you make the most of this in projects in the next few months. The perfect choice for office environments, ENTENTE echoes the trend for corporate breakout spaces, adding a variety of distinctive touches.

Communication, collaboration and sustainability

T

he times are changing and nowhere is this more prevalent than in the world of office furniture. Gone are the days when offices were simply filled with cubicles, desks and computers. Communication, collaboration, sustainability and flexibility are just some of the key driving forces behind the design of office furniture today. Without doubt, it is a combination of such factors that has influenced the emergence of new office landscapes that INEX-ONLINE.COM

strive for a balance of open plan and quiet spaces. The need for break-out spaces, idea walls, chill-out zones, phone booths and touchdown spaces are just some of the trends that currently influence furniture designs today. The notion that people only work when they are behind their desks is now a thing of the past. With the development of hand-held computer devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones, employees can be just as productive working from

home or even Starbucks. Hence, office furniture is designed in such a way that adds comfort and convenience, allowing employees to perform at their best whatever the task. The emergence of soft seating that provides a balance of comfort, support and ergonomics means that employees no longer have to be tied to their desks and it is a trend that will long continue. With modular combinations available, tailored solutions can be arranged to achieve improved work efficiency and well-being.

Conference and meeting rooms are no longer favoured in this holistic approach to office furniture design. Instead, there is a growing trend towards glass-fronted meeting pods that avoid the need for fixed partitioning and that help continue the flow of work space and nomadic working patterns. Acoustically engineered, these pods offer complete privacy for users and being fully flexible, they can even be relocated to other parts of the office. The birth of high backed meeting booths is the one of the biggest areas of growth in office furniture. Great for breaking up large, open plan office spaces, these stand-alone pieces help create touchdown spaces and

informal meeting areas, and come fully equipped to meet every technological need. Many offer advanced acoustic capabilities, their contoured high-back design helps reduce peripheral vision and external noise, whilst enhancing privacy and retaining an open plan feel. They are ergonomically engineered to combine the sit and posture from a traditional desk with the comfort and feel from a sofa. Regarding materials, there is still a strong trend towards wood tones combined with diverse colours and fabrics. Soft seating in bold colours can help distinguish office areas

and break up the uniformity and functionality of of the workspace. With more organisations realising the importance of the environment, responsible furniture designers are designing products manufactured from sustainable raw materials with low chemical omissions, combined with a strict recycling practice. Soft seating is no longer just for the foyer. By introducing it to the work place, it can not only adorn the interior, it can lead to an improved atmosphere and productivity too. lyndon.co.uk ÂŤ

and allows a truly immersive and indulgent experience and is deeper than other designs. ‘’Product innovation is key to driving the bathroom market forward. We expect straighter lined products and defined edges to become an emerging trend. Therefore it is likely that the ‘Pool’ bath will become increasingly popular as a result’’. We are also looking into future product innovations to look out for coloured designs and bespoke textured Lucite acrylic baths. watersbaths.co.uk «

Organic heritage The winning garden designer in the inaugural Raymond Blanc Heritage Garden
competition has been named as Anne Keenan MSGD. A registered member of the Society of Garden Designers (SGD), Anne’s design concept was chosen by a judging panel that included Raymond Blanc, Bob Sherman from Garden Organic, Juliet Sargeant MSGD, Chair of the SGD, Sean Butler MSGD Vice Chair of the SGD and Anne Marie Owens, Head Gardener at Le Manoir. The Heritage Garden competition, run in conjunction with Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, Garden Organic, Hartley Botanic and the SGD, was conceived to raise awareness of the on-going work by INEX-ONLINE.COM

national charity Garden Organic in promoting organic gardening methods, preserving knowledge and safeguarding rare varieties that were once the mainstay of our British gardens. Commenting on the winning team Raymond Blanc said: “It was not an easy decision for us! Anne’s design fully incorporated the Hartley Botanical green house as the main focus of the garden. The design is aesthetically pleasing yet practical for the maximum production and display of heritage vegetables which was important to

me.” The garden will feature heritage vegetables from the Garden Organic Heritage Seed Library, and will be sited within the kitchen gardens at Raymond Blanc’s twoMichelin star restaurant Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons. Describing her winning design concept, Anne Keenan said: “I was very much inspired by the Le Manoir site itself, the shapes, materials and general spirit of the place. I love the honey-coloured stone contrasting with the warm terracotta tiles and chimneys, the

leaves of the plants, the repeating circles seen in the dovecote, path junctions and clipped box balls. Even the church gate helped in the creation of my master plan.” Bob Sherman of Garden Organic said: “Anne’s winning design demonstrated how well she had understood the brief for the competition. Her design was inventive, creative and relatively straightforward in the sense that it would not be complicated to put together and very manageable once completed as a garden. It also reflected the theme of heritage varieties very well and was designed to ensure the heritage vegetables played a starring role.” The design concept utilises circles as a devise to overcome the unusual shape of The Heritage Garden and to facilitate strong visual and physical connections between the glasshouse, the Heritage Garden and the adjacent vegetable and herb gardens. Anne continues: “I wanted to make my garden accessible to visitors, to help them learn and understand about organic gardening. In a garden setting, I think knowledge and

understanding relies on good signage, so I’ve used traditional forcer pots to display information about the garden, its plants and its features and supplemented these with finger posts to ensure the garden is easy to find”. A garden gate will invite visitors into the site, while sinuous paths will draw visitors into the central open area where eight beds reserved for the growing of heritage vegetables will facilitate a five-year rotation, according to Soil Association principles. Around the perimeter of the garden, beds will display plants that are

good pollinators, sources of nectar, encourage biodiversity and in many cases have medicinal and edible roles. Other areas will be laid out to demonstrate water and green waste recycling. A series of low structures, including seating walls, will be positioned throughout the space providing outdoor teaching spaces and offering the opportunities to rest and enjoy the garden. The garden will open in June 2014 and Anne will be responsible for the planning, planting and overseeing the building of the garden, working alongside the team at Le Manoir. gardenorganic.org.uk manoir.com sgd.org.uk «

Created for today’s discerning consumer, the freestanding Cabrits bath from Victoria + Albert Baths blends modern art and ergonomics to create a unique design which provides a revolutionary bathing experience. The design team’s brief was to maximise the bathing experience for people of different ages and body sizes, providing comfort, coupled with exquisite styling: In short, to revolutionise the freestanding bathtub. Traditionally, support is achieved through the bather’s feet reaching the short end of the bathtub to control their body in a relaxed position. However in larger baths suitable for taller people, this can result in smaller bathers feeling unstable. The design is elegantly curved to form a connection at the hips between the bather and bath, independent of feet position. This results in a user’s legs being free to extend over the raised midpoint and fully relax out whether you are 5’5” or 6’5” tall. Its low profile also makes it ideal for parents with young children. vandabaths.com

Lighting, emotion and instinct A love of boats led David Trubridge to study Naval Architecture in the 1970s, but the engineering aspects of the course didn’t satisfy his thirst for design. When he finished his degree he taught himself furniture making, started a workshop and built a career and lifestyle around craftsmanship.

INEX-ONLINE.COM

David’s designs adorn prestigious locations across the world, from the Caribbean to Tokyo. His work can be found in many of the world’s leading museums, such as the Pompidou Centre, the V&A and the Minneapolis Design Museum. His lighting designs have appeared in a range of restaurants, airports and retail displays, such as Topshop as part of the Kate Moss collection, Stella McCartney’s diffusion line for Printemps and on the catwalk at Milan Fashion week. David is passionate about the environmental and ethical responsibility that designers should action. However, there are difficulties in maintaining a wholly sustainable approach as the positive design can still result in negative impacts. “Weighing out the options of using one sustainable item and then the unsustainable way that you need to use it is an ongoing problem in the design industry,” explains David. “My lighting is created

from the humble, natural and textural material of bamboo. It’s sustainable as it replenishes fast and is a secondary resource from the food industry. It does splinter, which can be hard to work with, but it’s harder than any wood. I use it with a natural water-based stain as we found that spirit-based stain not only produces nasty chemicals, but also highlights imperfections in the bamboo.” There’s a lot more to David’s designs than just lighting, but the interesting thing about his lighting designs is that David hadn’t planned to produce them.

“I had some spare time and just fancied making something for fun,” says David. “As a kid I loved to make those cardboard models of dodecahedron mathematical shapes, so I found one and made it into a bamboo plywood structure and put a light in it without much thought. I realised how nice it looked, so I sold it and made another… it just built from there. “You can easily research into what people need and create a business plan from that and as a result you will be certain to sell products. If you work as an artist, without plans or guidelines, there’s

a high chance that no one will like your final product and therefore nothing will come of it. But, if you get it right, like the light that I created just by chance, you can come across something that the world didn’t know it needed but embrace. No one else was doing this and it was my market. “The whole furniture market is so price conscious, it’s so cheap to make that I find it hard to justify selling the finished product at the inflated price. Lighting is an unrestricted typography, where explorations of pattern and structure aren’t limited. It has enormous artistic scope and can produce a healthy margin. Plus, lighting is fun! If you put a light in a space it produces an instant transformation, creating shadow patterns and statements, whereas furniture requires much more thought and not necessarily such an impact. “Creating interior lighting that tries to copy outdoor INEX-ONLINE.COM

50 5 MINUTES Right: Wild nature combines with artistry and design in David’s lighting. Below: David with his Coral light design.

light is an issue as it creates a flat effect. All you need to do is add emotion – people don’t buy my lights to light a room, they buy them to transform it. We need to add emotion that we can respond to, something instinctive that is embedded in our psyche – light filtering through the trees, the flicker of firelight on a cave roof – the emotion draws you in.” David was chosen as an Arts Fellow in 2004 to travel to Antarctica and part of his response was explored in the exhibition at the Nobel Peace Centre, On Thin Ice, which explored climate change. The Vitra Design Museum has hosted him as a teacher for many years whilst he has also worked with the design students in Iceland investigating the issue of whaling, and participants work on projects using recycled materials. He has also been recognized as the “Wornick Distinguished Visiting Professor” at the California College of Arts, as well as speaking at many conferences across the world. David’s designs won the “Dwell on Design” award in the Lighting Category with Manuka in Los Angeles. David continues to play an important role as an ambassador for good design and all that it entails, as he strives to spread the ethical awareness needed within the industry. Now taking permanent residence in New Zealand, David’s flat pack designs save money as well as environmental impact. “The first time I brought my flat pack design to Milan someone suggested I created products which assembled using plastic clips, like those on a child’s set,” explains David. “Now all the lights come in a set and the buyer assembles the piece themselves. People actually really love making it and, as Ikea have proved, you are more likely to keep something you made yourself for longer.” David recently exhibited his stunning lighting designs at Design Junction as part of London Design Festival. davidtrubridge.com INEX-ONLINE.COM
