Floors, Walls & Ceilings Focus was the first new build in the school for almost 20 years our brief was fairly simple. It had to be aesthetically pleasing and fit in the contractor’s budget.” Installed by specialist sub-contractor Bagley Plastering Contractors for main contractor BEC Construction, the two Armstrong systems are manufactured from up to 80% recycled content and provide light reflectance of up to 87%. The Optima L canopies were developed to provide a cost-effective designer solution for open areas, providing excellent sound absorption through their ability to absorb sound on both the front and the back of the system and so aid intelligibility and concentration. They are quick and easy to install under plasterboard ceilings, existing grid systems or exposed concrete soffits. The Dune dB tiles aid confidentiality due to their higher density which enables them to perform to 39dB. Hartsdown Executive Principal Andy Somers said: “It is a great place for sixth formers to work and enjoy their learning experience. It has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere and is a comfortable place to study which is important for our young men and women who are preparing for the next step in their educational career including university, higher education, training, apprenticeships and employment.” The new sixth form block is part of ongoing expansion at the academy which also includes a new music learning centre with digital recording facilities, a community radio station where students learn broadcast and production skills, a 3G floodlit all-weather soccer pitch and a developing sports centre.

The Optima L canopies were developed to provide a cost-effective designer solution for open areas

Ceilings give academy a visual talking point Mineral ceiling tiles and canopies from Armstrong were specified for a school’s first new-build for almost 20 years for their aesthetics, acoustics and cost.

S

ome 22 Optima L white circle canopies and a total of 500m2 of Dune dB Tegular tiles on a Prelude 24mm grid, that was angled 45˚ in one area, were selected by Diocesan Architects for a new £1.2m sixth form centre at Hartsdown Academy in Margate, Kent. The two-storey building at the front of the campus next to the entrance replaces a mobile classroom block which was at least 20 years old with a steel- and timber-framed structure comprising seven small classrooms, social and study space, and ICT suite. It also doubles as an adult education centre. Diocesan Architects had to design to strict guidelines in terms of the centre’s funding, with the building having to be delivered for £1500 per m2, this being signed off by the EFA (Education Funding Agency) prior to a successful grant award to the school. The Armstrong systems have been used throughout the 500m2, the circular Optima L canopies in the social space and the diagonal grid layout with Dune dB tiles in the student space specifically, with the Dune tiles in all other areas.

Ian Titherington, Project Coordinator at Diocesan Architects who are frequent specifiers of Armstrong Ceilings, said: “The canopies provide a visual talking point to the social area and reveal ductwork, cables and equipment that would otherwise be covered over. “The existing building stock was very poor, with many temporary structures including mobiles inherited from other schools and commercial companies. Style was specified to enable Leominster Primary School to easily divide their main hall into two areas

Style launches Multiroll partition for sports halls Style’s new Multiroll partitioning wall system delivers a practical and affordable solution for dividing school sports halls and other leisure facilities.

A

ctivated by a simple push of a button, the Multiroll can either be mounted in a beam area of the roof or invisibly fitted within a suspended ceiling. Alternatively it can be installed as a laterally guided partition, stepped partition or safety curtain. Where acoustics are of particular importance, the Multiroll can be fitted with sound absorbing, non-woven fabric to improve noise insulation, reduce reverberation times and improve voice audibility. “As with most schools and leisure centres, the main hall is an important multi-purpose space, often needing to be quickly re-arranged for the next class, gym lesson, rehearsal or assembly,” explains Julian Sargent, Group Managing Director of Style. “Dividing the space has a whole range of benefits, not only enabling the hall to be used more efficiently but also reducing energy costs by removing the need to heat and light large rooms when only part of them is being used.” Multiroll partitions have already been

installed in two UK schools. Leominster Primary School is an £11m investment that merged the old infant and junior schools into one building. The school is ‘energy efficient’ with solar panels and heating, plus water systems designed to reduce energy consumption. Working with Amey and led by Kier, Style was specified to enable the school to easily divide their main hall into two areas, or open it up into one expansive space. Simplicity and practicality, at an affordable budget, were the key criteria for this installation leading to Style recommending Multiroll as the best solution. A recognised eco-school, Windygoul Primary School also enjoys the benefits of a main hall that can be quickly divided by a Multiroll system with impact absorbing PVC panels and retractable side guides. Floors, Walls & Ceilings Focus areas within each of the school’s blocks that come off the main street. We used a variety of different wedge-shaped colours of the product to delineate different areas. It looks very striking. “We also specified the product for corridors, some classrooms, and in the toilets and changing rooms in conjunction with Altro Walkway 20, which shares the same colour palette.” Altro XpressLay is the world’s first adhesive-free, truly sustainable safety floor. It is installed using a tape system instead of adhesive, so can be installed without a surface DPM. It can be easily removed postinstallation, re-used elsewhere and then at the end of its life be recycled. The range boasts 41 colours, featuring bright and subtle, sparkle-free designs and decorative chipped options to give you a huge selection to choose from. Its shared colour palette with Altro Walkway 20 enables you to combine use of both ranges to suit the application. Altro Easyclean Maxis PUR Technology ensures the product stays look good long-term. Like all Altro safety flooring products, Altro XpressLay offers sustained slip resistance for the lifetime of the product, keeping your risk of a slip or fall to just 1 in a million. The Altro products at St Teilo’s were installed by CS Flooring, in Cardiff. Owner Anthony Mynett said: “This was the biggest Altro XpressLay installation we have ever done, at 6250m2. It was a perfect example of how the product can be used to cut costs and accelerate a building programme without sacrificing quality, longevity or aesthetics.” Anthony Mynett continued: “The beauty of installing Altro XpressLay is that it needs no adhesive, just its own weight alone, plus some strategically placed fixing tape. It’s quick, easy and clean. This means we saved days on the installation – probably cutting it by half. The entire process took us just 12 weeks. “An added bonus with this product is that individual sections can easily be lifted and replaced if required, rather than having to take up the whole floor and re-adhere. There were some sceptics who didn’t believe that the product would be suitable for this application, but they have been proved wrong.”

Willmott Dixon suggested the designer looked at Altro XpressLay as it can be laid straight to slab with no DPM and no fixing joints

Altro XpressLay helps cut costs at Cardiff school Altro XpressLay safety flooring has provided a significant time and cost saving solution in the construction of the new St Teilo’s Church in Wales High School in Cardiff.

T

he new £26m school was designed by architects Austin-Smith: Lord. It is a contemporary design, with classrooms clustered in blocks off a main central ‘street’. Kate Smith, Designer at Austin-Smith: Lord, said: “Due to the huge length of space of the school’s main street, the floor construction included many movement joints, which had a knock on effect to the

movement requirements of the floor finish. “The main contractor, Willmott Dixon, suggested that we look at Altro XpressLay as it can be laid straight to slab with no DPM and no fixing joints – creating a huge time and cost saving for the project. We were now confident we had a product that could meet this specific need. “In addition to the main ‘street’, we specified Altro XpressLay for the break-out

TV’s new Coronation Street studios called for perfectly smooth anti-static floors to facilitate the fluid movement of HD equipment

n a hotly contested field of 30 submissions, the FeRFA Awards 2014 (The Resin Flooring Association) recognised Sika and resin floor installers Zircon Flooring Ltd for their collaborative work on the construction of ITV’s new Coronation Street studios at MediaCityUK, Trafford. Despite facing tough competition for the accolade from other big players in the industry, the resin flooring manufacturer’s impressive portfolio of work with contractors on major projects meant that four of the six finalists in the category were Sika projects. Sika was also highly commended in this category for its work on the Greenwich Peninsula Marketing Hub with Senso Flooring and Remmers UK.

Flooring, to devise an innovative solution utilising Sika’s high-performance, selfsmoothing, epoxy resin floors. The sensitivity of the camera equipment used to capture the show means that any static created can easily be picked up. As such, ITV required a flooring system which took this into consideration, making Sika an obvious choice for Zircon who have a great understanding of what products work best in studio settings. Designed for use in areas with sensitive electronic equipment, the system, comprised of Sikafloor Level 30 and solventfree, anti-static Sikafloor 262 AS, was expertly applied by Sika approved industrial flooring contractor Zircon Flooring across four studios totalling 3800m². Helen McGachie, Chief Executive Officer at FeRFA, said: “Sika’s work with Zircon Flooring on the Coronation Street studios really impressed the judges because of the excellent quality of the product application, as Sika and Zircon rose to the challenge, working together to achieve a precise floor

flatness specification. “ITV required a robust and sustainable flooring solution suitable to stand the test of time due to such high volume of daily usage with heavy equipment. Sika were able to not only meet this, but also provide a solution to prevent potential static build up to ensure a flooring system that will work for years to come, which we were very impressed by.” Richard Kay, Key Account Manager – Flooring at Sika, added: “To be involved in the construction of the new ITV Coronation Street studios set was a particular highlight in our commercial project portfolio, so for it to win ‘Large Project of the Year’ too means we are absolutely delighted. “Stewart and his team at Zircon have a great understanding of what products work best in studio settings, and our offering fit the bill perfectly. Working together with such a highly skilled contractor meant we were able to rise to the challenging brief which others walked away from.” Stewart Draper, Director at Zircon, added: “Having worked closely with Sika over the past decade we have got TV studio flooring off to a fine art and the finished floor in grey looks absolutely superb – and we’re thrilled to have won this award!” The FeRFA Awards took place on 28th November 2014 at the De Vere Staverton Park, Northamptonshire, and were presented by TV personality Mark Durden-Smith.

Composite decking can be more eco-friendly than natural wood

Realising the benefits of timber composite Stuart Burns, Director at Dura Composites, looks at the reasons why demand for composite decking is growing over natural wood alternatives.

C

omposites still represent less than 10% of the overall decking market but demand is growing at a rapid rate as end users and contractors realise the eco benefits of choosing composite decking products. This is thanks to two factors – enhanced product quality and the realisation that composite decking can be more ecofriendly than natural wood. Dura Deck is one such composite decking solution; it features a high percentage of reclaimed hard wood which gives it a very natural look but its high density polyethylene content and other inhibitors and stabilisers means that it doesn’t suffer from some of the maintenance headaches

Dura Deck comes with a warranty of up to 25 years, 10 years longer than the average life of hardwood decking

of natural wood decking. The great thing about an engineered product such as Dura Deck means that highly developed additional ingredients can be added at point of manufacture to stabilise the decking and protect it from various threats including moisture, mould and UV. This means that, unlike natural wood, it won’t crack, shrink, warp or rot during its long service life. It is also highly resistant to light degradation thanks to UV inhibitors added during manufacturing, which ensure Dura Deck retains a huge proportion of its original colour. This has been proven after a massive 5000 hours UV exposure test carried out including simulated rain

and temperature change. Dura Deck was proven to remain structurally stable throughout its entire life cycle. Many don’t realise that products such as Dura Deck are even greener than traditional wood. In fact, it is made of 87.4% recycled materials and can also be recycled after use. In addition, Dura achieved a world first when it became the first timber composite supplier to become FSC 100% certified, guaranteeing the use of FSC certified forests in the production chain when this option is ordered. Green credentials aside, the biggest single reason why contractors and end users choose Dura Deck has to be the incredible life cycle cost-savings that it can bring. Dura Deck comes with a warranty of up to 25 years, 10 years longer than the average life of hardwood decking and more than 15 years longer than the life of softwood decking. When looking at initial outlay, Dura Deck is slightly more expensive than traditional wood decking but it is often cheaper to use because it lasts so much longer and doesn’t require any painting or staining. In fact, an independent report that compared whole life cycle costs over a 25 year period confirmed that a square metre of Dura Deck is £136.14 cheaper than softwood and £381.18 cheaper than hardwood. Proprietary subsurface fixings make the deck quick and easy to install, not to mention barefoot friendly. A deck installer can lay the deck very quickly and thanks to the 6mm spacer clips will deliver consistent gapping much more easily than natural wood planks. These characteristics mean that Dura Deck is suitable to be specified on large or small projects, be they commercial or residential.

Unprecedented slip resistance from Karndean

One of the UK’s market leaders in luxury vinyl flooring, Karndean Designflooring, is unveiling its new Opus Enhance range.

R

esponding to calls from architects and designers for unprecedented slip resistance, Opus Enhance achieves a result of 40 plus in the Pendulum Wet Test, the highest currently available in the marketplace. Ideal for use in a variety of commercial settings, the enhancement to the PU coating allows for added grip without compromising on aesthetics. The collection features the most popular designs from Karndean’s commercial Opus range. The six planks and two large format tiles ensure a good spread of different colour palettes. From the striking black washed, wood grain effect of Carbo, to the weathered wood appearance of Magna, these ontrend designs will add a contemporary twist to any project. The two stone effect tiles, Urbus with its stormy mix of light and mid grey tones and the warm earthy tone of Terra, make for a versatile backdrop to public sector interiors.

The combination of plank and tile choices allow for enhanced design capabilities and the use of zoning. Specifiers have looked to incorporate sweeping curves, rug effects and borders around key areas of interest. It is predicted that as space becomes a premium this trend will continue to grow. With designers looking to create seamless integration to define an area without the requirement of a physical divide, LVT offers versatility. Fully HSE compliant, Opus Enhance offers the same intricate detail as the successful Opus range with all the planks achieving an R12 rating. Leisure centres, schools, libraries, health care settings and areas with direct access to the outdoors can all benefit from the increased underfoot safety. “We are extremely proud of Opus Enhance,” explains Paul Barratt, Managing Director of Karndean Designflooring. He continues: “We wanted to offer our commercial customers a market leader in

slip resistance without compromising on the intriguing designs Karndean is known for. “It has allowed us to reposition this collection as our most commercially versatile, and also offer the design community inspiring designs for future commercial projects.” Karndean is committed to minimising the environmental impact of manufacture, preventing pollution and achieving continual improvement in their environmental performance. Opus Enhance comes with a 12 year commercial guarantee.

all and door protection may not be top of the list when it comes to maintenance budgets but don’t be fooled into thinking it is inconsequential.

The diverse use of buildings in the days of limited space and multiuse means protecting interiors from expensive-to-repair damage is as important as ever.

16 Public Sector Build Journal

A major drain on maintenance budgets for any building can be the continual re painting of marked and scuffed walls, repair and redecoration of vulnerable corners and entrances along with maintaining doors – some of which will be expensive fire doors. By spending money at the start, be it a new build, extension or refurbishment project installing Yeoman Shield wall and door protection will show a year on year saving on maintenance costs. For example Sutton Academy, a busy school in St Helens, Merseyside which houses 1300 pupils, found themselves with the costly and unsightly problem of the newly painted walls in corridors and IT atrium areas quickly getting marked from the passage of pupils, staff and equipment. A solution to stop this damage was fitting Yeoman Shield HessianEx wall panelling to 1250mm high with joint cover strips and 50 x 50mm External Corner Angles in an attractive Lilac colour, to the ground and first floor corridors along with the plaza area. Polysafe Verona PUR colour Summer Coulis 5217 adds style and safety to a school refectory, across both dining and serving areas

A brighter school dining experience With a combination of decorative appeal and sustainable slip resistance, Polyflor’s new Polysafe Verona PUR sheet vinyl range continues to enhance a wide variety of commercial and residential environments.

O

ne such example is at Middleton Technology School in Manchester, where as part of a recent school refurbishment, the range has been installed into serving and dining areas of the school refectory, adding a bright and uplifting feel to the dining hall. Fitted into a specially housed structure separate to the main school building, Polysafe Verona was the flooring of choice due to its very heavy commercial classification. This flooring is able to provide slip resistance in areas where there are regular spillages and a high volume of traffic, whilst still retaining an attractive appearance thanks to the product’s carborundum-free design and PUR reinforcement for ease of cleaning. Specified by main contractor H Bell & Sons (Rochdale) Ltd and installed by Winton Flooring in Manchester, the fresh hue of Summer Coulis 5217 has been used throughout front and back of house to provide a safe yet attractive floor finish that creates a welcoming and relaxing environment, suitable for pupils during lunch breaks. Allison Crompton, Head Teacher at Middleton Technology School comments: “The motto at our school is ‘in pursuit

of excellence’ and the installed flooring certainly fits our objective of having interior spaces that are fresh and project a positive ambience. As soon as we saw the new Verona range, we were impressed with the modern colours, particularly with the added benefit of slip resistance to give protection to our pupils. Our catering team is delighted with the end result, having picked the Summer Coulis shade at the outset to add some vibrancy to the area.” Chris Bell, Director at H Bell & Sons (Rochdale) Ltd adds: “We are very happy

The flooring is able to provide slip resistance in areas where there are regular spillages and a high volume of traffic

with this safety flooring installation. As a company that has been established over 100 years, we also like to use interior products from longstanding suppliers such as Polyflor with a reputation for good quality products. The Verona range ticks the box perfectly and ideally complements the use of natural wood tones and overall angular style of the building which has leanings to contemporary Scandinavian design principles.” In educational settings, it is vital for a safety floor to perform and Polysafe Verona is fully certified to achieve the tried and tested Polysafe slip resistance credentials. Meeting HSE and UK Slip Group Guidelines to deliver sustained wet slip resistance throughout the guaranteed life of the product, Verona achieves 36+ on the Pendulum wet test and has a surface roughness of 20 microns and above, classifying the product as low slip potential. Verona fully adheres to EN 13845 – the European Standard for safety flooring and meets the 50,000 cycles abrasion test, ensuring the virtually invisible particles incorporated into the product are sustainable and provide continued friction over the long term. To aid maintenance, Polysafe Verona contains the renowned Polysafe polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) cleaning technology and through the use of natural recycled aggregates the product contains recycled content, being 100% recyclable via the Recofloor scheme. The product is readily available from Polyflor’s national network of flooring distributor partners.
