Myson offers a range of sophisticated controls and TRVs, so the system can deliver lower running costs
HEAT EMITTERS; COMBINING EXCELLENCE
Specifiers of heating products are faced with an increasing array of possible heat emitters. However, this doesn't have to make choosing more difficult; rather, it offers an opportunity to combine more than one type of heat emitter to provide the optimum total heating solution, as Andrew Lowery, Marketing Manager at Myson UK, explains.
E
very specification for a heating system should start with a careful consideration of the space to be heated. This should take into account room sizes, ceiling heights, insulation levels and construction methods, how much wall space is available and whether the
4
walls are interior or exterior. Note should also be taken of the numbers of doors and windows. Once this information has been established, a heat calculation can be performed to determine the output required. This can now be carried out online, using the Myson Heat Loss Calculator.
A style such as the Myson Plan Compact with its flat-fronted appeal, or the Plan Compact Plus, with subtle horizontal lines on a flat front, will add a minimalist design feature
Once you know the output required for each space, and have determined the heat source and the system temperature, the next consideration should be the property’s use and whether that brings any special requirements. If the property is a public-facing
administrative facility, such as local authority offices, or a prestigious new public space, such as a college, library or museum, aesthetics will be important, so a design-led panel radiator may be the ideal choice. A style such as the Myson Plan Compact with
HVAC/HVP Focus
its flat-fronted appeal, or the Plan Compact Plus, with subtle horizontal lines on a flat front, will add a minimalist design feature. Each comes with a factory fitted top grill and side panels to deliver a beautiful glossy overall finish that will complement any setting. Both ranges offer a single convector, a double panel ‘Xtra’ and a double convector version and a wide range of sizes, most of which are available from stock for a fast delivery time. The Plan Compact also comes in a triple convector model to provide maximum warmth from a smaller footprint, still elegantly styled. Where looks really matter, this range of options makes it easy to specify consistently throughout the property. The Plan Compact and Plan Compact Plus are popular with installers as they are easy to install while delivering excellent outputs with exceptional good looks. These flat-fronted models are also easy to clean, making it simpler for facilities managers to keep their premises in a pristine condition. They add a lot more style than a conventional panel radiator, while still offering exceptional value for money.
Every specification for a heating system should start with a careful consideration of the space to be heated
In buildings such as hospitals, care homes or special needs schools, for example, consideration of the NHS Estates Health Guidelines should be taken into account. These state that radiator surface temperatures should be 43°C or lower in order to avoid scalding when in contact with skin. The most commonly used heat emitter in these applications is the low surface temperature radiator, or LST.
In the education sector, hydronic underfloor heating has long been a preferred option, especially in larger spaces such as multifunctional dining and assembly rooms and sports halls
The Myson LST is comprised of a single or double panel radiator enclosed within a robust outer casing, with a carefully designed air gap to prevent harm to the end user. Pipework can also represent a potential scalding hazard, so the Myson LST safely encloses this too. The casing is designed with smooth, rounded edges and corners so that if the end user falls against it, they are less likely to sustain an injury; and it is securely attached to the wall by means of a simple, double security screw mechanism, which prevents it from moving if knocked. This can be unclipped with ease for deep cleaning, decoration or maintenance. Myson recently extended the LST range, with a new 420mm model, now the narrowest on the UK market and perfect for busy hospital wards which also require a lot of wall space for medical equipment. In municipal spaces such as council offices and libraries, which need maximum wall space for shelving, or sports centres, which must accommodate a lot of equipment, over door fan heaters, such as the Myson Hi-Line, are an innovative solution as they leave the wall space free for productive use. Tall, vertical radiator styles such as the Myson Décor or Column are also increasingly popular as they add cutting-edge style while providing large heat outputs, making clever use of less wall space.
In domestic kitchens and bathrooms, the towel warmer is now extremely popular for towel storage and drying
In the education sector, hydronic underfloor heating has long been a preferred option, especially in larger spaces such as multifunctional dining and assembly rooms and sports halls, and it is fast becoming a popular choice for spaces such as municipal office foyers, museums, libraries and hospitals. Myson’s Floortec system is
5
HVAC/HVP Focus Myson recently extended the LST range, with a new 420mm model, now the narrowest on the UK market and perfect for busy hospital wards
a firm favourite in schools and colleges, offering several options for fixing in a variety of floor constructions. The most common approach is still to lay Floortec in a new, screeded floor, using Myson’s unique Tackernail fixing system, but Myson Floortec also offers diffuser plates systems which can be laid over existing floor joists and battens. More recently, Myson has introduced Microboard, a thin, 18mm profile board for laying hydronic underfloor heating over existing floors without greatly affecting floor or threshold heights; an invaluable new asset in refurbishments. Myson now offers an underfloor heating single room pack, in a choice of two sizes, which makes sourcing parts and receiving a system guarantee even simpler. The latest approach is often to use hydronic underfloor heating in larger open spaces, such as foyers of municipal offices
6
or public access areas of new buildings, such as libraries, with radiators or fan heaters providing warmth in the administrative areas behind the scenes. In domestic dwellings, offices and smaller classrooms, radiators are often still the favoured choice as they can be rapidly adjusted to suit the end user. In domestic refurbishments, specifiers’ favourites are the Myson Select and the sleek, round-edged Myson Premier, both highly efficient and practical radiators which are installed in thousands of private and public sector homes throughout the UK. Both these radiator models feature low water content and a high surface area, so they can emit plentiful heat from lower temperature systems from a compact footprint. This makes them a potentially important part of the mix when specifying any system. Myson Premier and Select both come with a robust
10-year guarantee to provide added peace of mind. In domestic kitchens and bathrooms, the towel warmer is now extremely popular for towel storage and drying; but in smaller spaces, plinth-mounted fan heaters, such as the Myson Kickspace, are also popular as they help to free up more wall space for additional storage. Towel warmers are now an almost standard specification in new build residential properties. When designing a combined system, it is important to understand the benefits of each heat emitter type and how they can complement each other. It is essential to control every system well, which is why Myson offers a range of sophisticated controls and TRVs, so the system can deliver lower running costs. Buying all Myson products not only delivers excellent results in terms of efficiency and performance, but also ensures that they have been designed and developed to work superbly in tandem with other heat emitter types. Whether you are tackling a new build project or an extensive refurbishment, we can help you take a holistic view on the best combination of products to use, with the right valves and controls to achieve maximum energy efficiency. As the only European manufacturer to make all these emitter types, Myson is uniquely placed to give unbiased advice
as to the best combination of products for each project. We also offer exceptional customer service and technical advice on all our products. The logical approach, therefore, is to source all Myson products, which will also give you access to expert system design, which is especially important when combining different types of emitters. Unlike other manufacturers which only produce one or two heat emitter types at most, Myson possesses expertise in each of these areas, plus a wealth of knowledge on how best to combine them. Because of our unique total solutions approach, you can create your own total solution with confidence, as well as benefiting from our robust guarantees. Public sector budgets are pressured and therefore demand best value, which means sourcing from a manufacturer with a good reputation and sound track record. It is vital that the system represents a good long-term investment, which will rely both on its quality and its reliability. There’s no doubt that with its innovative approach, technical expertise and unparalleled range of high-quality heat emitters, Myson, as part of Rettig ICC, Europe’s leading heat emitter manufacturer, is best placed to help achieve just that.

MEETING THE NEED FOR EFFICIENT VENTILATION SYSTEMS
Heatrae Sadia is a market-leading electric heating and hot water products manufacturer specialising in domestic and commercial hot water, hygiene and drinking water solutions and renewable technology. The company's innovative products include the award-winning Megaflo Eco unvented cylinder, which combines high-performance with optimum efficiency to give fast-filling baths and invigorating, powerful showers.
Sadia’s extensive H eatrae research and development ensure its products are always energy-efficient, durable and reliable. Made to the company’s own demanding standards of safety and quality, Heatrae Sadia’s products provide the perfect balance of control and comfort and are backed by its UK-based customer support team and a nationwide network of engineers. Heatrae Sadia has updated the design of one of its most popular domestic ventilation systems to make it even more efficient. The Advance Plus mechanical ventilation heat recovery (MVHR)
solution now incorporates a 100% summer by-pass, enabling endusers to benefit from the warm weather while enjoying a clean, comfortable home environment. Operating automatically, the summer by-pass opens when the outside temperature exceeds 20ºC. After a hot day, when the outdoor night air is cooler than that indoors, the unit takes the warm internal air straight outside, by-passing the heat exchanger and helping to maintain a pleasant temperature. Meanwhile, the cooler outside night air is still filtered and supplied into the dwelling.
Mechanical ventilation systems provide a continuous air supply and extraction, removing contaminated, wet air from kitchens, utility rooms, washrooms and bathrooms. Heat recovery units have the added advantage of recycling heat from the removed air back into the fresh air supply, supporting the heating system by warming other living areas of the property. Suitable for homes with up to 115m2 of floor space and up to five wetrooms, the Advance MVHR is renowned for leading the creation of the 0.4 W/l/s or less category within SAP Appendix Q, thanks to its specific fan power (SFP) of just 0.37 W/l/s. Together, the Advance and Advance Plus provide controlled ventilation while retaining the heat in the home to an efficiency of up to 90%, and remaining fully compliant with current Building Regulations. The units can be laid on their back, positioned in a loft, or fixed to walls or ceilings with a unique bracket which can be supplied to site prior to installation.
At 12kg, each unit is incredibly lightweight, comes complete with easy-fit spigots and rubber seals and boasts open-by-hand filters making life easy for end-users. They also feature selfsealing duct connections, and are right or left-side reversible. Every unit in the range comes with a comprehensive two-year parts and labour guarantee with on-site service support. Richard Newman, Senior Product Manager at Heatrae Sadia, said: “Modern homes have become ever more airtight, making the need for efficient ventilation systems an increasing priority for installers and their customers. “The Advance MVHR is powerful but easy to install and use, making it a perfect choice where space and budgets are tight. “We are continually innovating to deliver even better products. By incorporating the summer bypass functionality into an already incredibly high-performing product, we are responding to the ever increasing demand for quality, energy-efficient ventilation.”

DEMAND-CONTROLLED VENTILATION BY RENSON
For several years, Renson has been developing very successful ventilation systems. Its demand-controlled ventilation system with the Healthbox ensures the house is optimally ventilated, according to the resident's activities. This ventilation system really can help homes reduce their energy consumption whilst creating a healthy indoor environment.
R
enson’s demandcontrolled ventilation system combines a constant supply of fresh air through self-regulating vents and extraction on-demand of polluted air thanks to the central extraction unit Healthbox. Dynamic sensors measure the extraction air 24 hours a day on CO2 or humidity and/or VOCs and adapt the ventilation level to the needs of the residents in an intelligent way. In this way, the system makes a healthy indoor environment possible.

Remote monitoring and ease of maintenance
CONTROLLING DISTRICT AND COMMUNAL HEATING
Efficient heat networks are vital if we are to meet our aspirations to reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty in the UK. We've recently seen the first code of practice for Heat Networks from CIBSE & ADE, and also a Heat Interface Unit (HIU) design guide from BSRIA. This is all in recognition of the requirement for improvement in the design and delivery of heat networks, and the huge drive to install modern, efficient systems.
H
ow do we provide an efficient heat network? In order to deliver a low emission heat network, first and foremost the system should be designed carefully and accurately, ideally incorporating advanced technology to allow for control, remote surveillance and monitoring of the network. Evinox Energy is confident that the future of heat networks lies in electronicallycontrolled heat interface units, that provide full comfort to the end user, whilst also delivering important information regarding the operation of the system. This provides the ability to monitor, adjust or regulate the system remotely over the internet. To achieve the same result using a mechanically-

A two-way communication system provides diagnostics for the operation of the HIU remotely, with the ability to open and close the valves and read the temperatures and flow rates without physically checking the unit. This avoids unnecessary call outs and simplifies maintenance by monitoring alarms remotely. End user settings can be viewed and adjusted remotely to provide assistance for residents to programme the HIU and ensure the reduction of their bills, and improve the comfort. Domestic hot water and heating set points can be adjusted remotely as well as schedule programming.
Research, development and innovation The Evinox Energy HIU features TCP/IP (transmission control protocol/internet protocol) with a two-way communication network, which allows for the collection of data for performance monitoring and energy modelling purposes. This provides invaluable information about real-time and historical consumption data, which can be analysed for research and development. This data can then be utilised in the future design process to ensure high efficiency networks are installed. By understanding the pattern of end user requirements and demand, it is possible to improve and tailor the technology to ensure the best solution is provided. By combining effective HIU control with excellent after-sales end user support and flexible metering and billing services, the building owner has a hasslefree, efficient development and residents enjoy a comfortable and relaxed place to live.

The Infinity Solo range is renewables compatible and supplied prefitted with a coil, meaning that the primary energy source will always be from renewable gains
RINNAI GOES SOLO FOR CONTINUOUS FLOW
The cylinder is stainless steel and this reduces the weight compared to glasslined models, and it makes transportation and installation a lot easier. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders also have extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h per day), so the user pays less to maintain the heat within the tank. One other benefit of the Infinity Solo using a stainless steel cylinder is that the life expectancy of the material is far greater than that of a glass-lined equivalent, as glass suffers from thermal shock causing it to crack after a period of time. The Infinity Solo range is also renewables compatible and supplied prefitted with a coil, meaning that the primary energy source will always be from renewable gains and the complementary Rinnai water heater will only apply the precise amount of gas to boost the difference in temperature. Rinnai manufactures the energy-efficient Infinity range of gas-fired, continuous flow water heaters and space heaters. The Infinity brand carries the widest range of condensing water heaters on the market today with the most impressive efficiencies in operation, leading the field in technological innovation.

Although inhibitors must be of at least BuildCert standard to meet regulations, the cleaning chemicals themselves are not required to meet any such quality standards. This has led to an abundance of cheap cleaning chemicals on the market. Unfortunately, such chemicals are often unsuitable for modern boilers and fail to remove corrosion and scale on a long-term basis.
The checklist It is wise to use high-quality cleaning chemicals from reputable brands to ensure the removal of limescale deposits, flux residues and ferrous oxides from a heating system. So, what should an installer look for when choosing high-performance cleaning chemicals?
CHOOSING THE RIGHT CHEMICAL TREATMENT To achieve the best results for a heating system using the right water treatment chemicals is fundamental. The ability to disperse scale. The key consideration to look out for is its ability to disperse scale and iron oxide. Scale is gauged in parts per million based on 500ml of solution in a 100 litre system. Some cheaper options can disperse as low as 20ppm, which means most of the scale remains in the system. However, the BM3 cleaner will disperse up to 150ppm for the same dosage. Look out for the Benchmark logo, a valuable endorsement of the product’s reputation and associated back up services. The BM3 cleaner from BoilerMag is supported by a technical helpline. Select a phosphate and borate-free formula. Phosphate can block wet bearings of circulator pumps, therefore a formula free from phosphates will effectively protect heating system parts. Ensure the cleaner is non-toxic by avoiding products which contain nitrate or EDTA, as these are potentially harmful to the environment and EDTA can have a corrosive effect on metal parts. BM3 is free from hazards
and safe to discard to the foul sewer or a septic tank. The chemical composition of the chemical can also influence its shelf-life. If you’re buying in bulk or storing chemicals, some options can be prone to starting to solidify within six months. BM3 has a guaranteed shelf-life of up to three years.
Water testing To make it easier for heating engineers and contractors to assess the heating system’s water quality and recommend a treatment programme, ‘dip test’ indicator strips can be used to test for cleaner levels in the system, allowing the engineer to check that dosage levels are sufficient for an effective flush, and if the flush has been successful or should be repeated. Similar strips can also be used to check the levels of inhibitor in the system, ensuring that the concentration is optimised at both pre and post-dose stages.

The benefits of good system treatment for larger heating systems are significant. Buildings such as public buildings and hospitals, will not only benefit from business continuity, they’ll also reduce their energy and maintenance costs. There are environmental benefits associated with reduced energy use, due to increased heating efficiency, including the reduction in carbon emissions and avoidance of boiler scrappage.
Good practice for care and maintenance of heating systems
THE IMPORTANCE OF AN EFFECTIVE WATER TREATMENT PROGRAMME FOR LARGER HEATING SYSTEMS Heating system treatment programmes for domestic properties are now commonplace as the benefits of increased efficiency and reduced maintenance costs are widely recognised. But, they are arguably more important for larger buildings, where heating system failures can be expensive in terms of commercial losses. Craig Worth, National Sales Manager at BoilerMag, explains further.
F
or a large heating system to perform optimally it’s imperative that an effective treatment programme is implemented to ward off issues. From the moment it is installed, a heating system is at risk as water reacts with steel components. This corrosive process causes a build-up – a black sludge, or
magnetite, mud-like substance which is an accumulation of fine ferrous particles of corrosion. Left unchecked this can cause problems. Over time, the system will suffer from reduced efficiency, greater CO2 emissions and higher energy as well as potentially huge capital investment on replacement parts.
Whilst only guidance for domestic properties, the latest update of Part L of the Building Regulations (April 2014), provides a good practice blueprint for measures that need to be taken in order to maximise the efficiency and circulation of hot water systems in all types of properties. It’s recommended that specifiers and building managers adopt a sensible approach to cleaning and protecting heating systems to ensure that the long-term health of larger hot water systems is maintained and protected. Existing systems should be correctly cleaned and flushed before using an inhibitor chemical to prevent scale formation and corrosion. A filter should be fitted into the heating circuit to maintain efficiency and prolong the system’s life. Even for new systems, it is good practice to install preventative measures, such as filters, to ensure systems remain clean and efficient.

Inhibitors, also known as Protectors, provide ongoing protection against corrosion and scale. High-performance formulas will maintain heating efficiency and should be free from damaging, harmful chemicals. Again, high-quality inhibitor chemicals will display the Benchmark logo, and must be BuildCert-approved.
Magnetic boiler filters High-performance magnetic filters are the most effective way of ongoing prevention of the build-up of magnetite in larger heating systems, reducing energy bills, maintenance costs and increasing boiler life.

JOHNSON & STARLEY TO OFFER NICEIC TRAINING PACKAGE
The course has been designed to assess installers against set criteria, formed from the relevant National Occupational Standards (NOS) and has been approved by Summit Skills
Johnson & Starley has become the first manufacturer to offer a new training and assessment package from NICEIC for installers of ventilation systems.
T
he course has been designed to assess installers against set criteria, formed from the relevant National Occupational Standards (NOS) and has been approved by Summit Skills – the Sector Skills Council for the building services engineering sector. It runs over two days and comprises a theory and practical exam as part of the final assessment. Paul Collins, Technical Services Manager at NICEIC, said: “We are delighted to be working alongside such a prestigious brand in the ventilation arena. Johnson & Starley is a name that installers

of ventilation systems will all recognise and this partnership will benefit the industry immensely. “It is essential that any installation of mechanical ventilation systems is carried out by skilled and competent persons. By forging this link, consumers can be confident that the systems will be installed correctly and perform at the levels expected.” Poor air quality has been highlighted as a major contributor to respiratory issues and skin disease. The most widely recognised technologies for dealing with the issue of poor air quality are whole house
mechanical extract ventilation (MEV) and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR). NICEIC expects the installation of ventilation systems to be a key area for growth in the next few years as awareness of poor air quality grows. Those with the skills to install ventilation systems will be well placed to take advantage. Dave Hadfield, Technical Services Manager for Johnson & Starley, said: “As a leading manufacturer of ventilation
products, we are keen to ensure they are installed to the highest standard and in line with our own guidance. “Accuracy and attention to detail is vital to ensure the systems perform at their optimum level and we are pleased to be working alongside NICEIC to offer this training package to installers. “This scheme offers us the opportunity to work alongside installers and this can only be good for us as a company and the industry as a whole.” Johnson & Starley will host the course at its headquarters in Northampton. Once installers hold the qualification, then they can apply to NICEIC Competent Persons Scheme for Ventilation so they can self-certify their ventilation work in England & Wales.
