A Note from the Editor

A Decade at the Swiss School in Singapore

Dear Members and Readers, The first of the two biggies on the Club calendar has come and gone – the Swiss Club’s National Day celebrations. Once again, it was a wonderful evening of patriotic sentiment and good old-fashioned fun. A highlight, for me, was the lampion parade en route to the annual bonfire. The little ones could barely contain their excitement as it started to drizzle with rain, wondering aloud if the fire would light. (It did.) Inside this issue, you’ll find a page packed with exciting events that the Club has organised for the benefit and enjoyment of Members of all ages. I urge you to join in the myriad of activities, from trips to the wonderful Singapore Zoo to craft workshops. Tapping my own childhood memories, and memories of my grown sons’ childhoods, almost everything was more fun when it was done in a group. Join in the Club’s events and make some memories! Again, drawing on my own experiences of raising sons in an expat environment, sport is a wonderful thing on so many levels. It taught my boys commitment, teamwork, how to win humbly and how to lose graciously. On top of the many sports offered at the Club, the Embassy of Switzerland is organising its very own Tennis Festival. Step up and join in. After all, there is more to student life than chasing good grades. Wine, dine, unwind and find new friends at your Club. Next issue, look out for the photographic evidence of the other biggie on the Club calendar – the Oktoberfest, of course! Yours,

A Word from the Committee Dear Members,

I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to you, our Members, for your continuous support of the Swiss Club as well as the Committee, Sub-committees, Management and Club employees and our vendors for their contributions over the past year.

It has been almost 10 months since my last message in ‘Relax’ magazine. In the meantime, the contributions from my fellow Members of the Committee have kept you well informed on Club matters and the overall progress of our plans. I trust that you enjoyed a pleasant and relaxing summer break. It is my pleasure to welcome you back to Singapore and to the Swiss Club. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new Members – I truly hope you will enjoy your time at the Swiss Club and make many new acquaintances. You will soon receive our invitation and agenda for the forthcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for 24 September at 7pm in the Pavilion. The AGM is an important statutory event and I would like to encourage all Members to join for an update on initiatives, acceptance of our accounts, and the election of the Committee. A major topic at this year’s AGM will be the proposed redevelopments in relation to the URA and GFA requirements with the March 2019 deadline. William Forwood, Chairman of the Property Sub-committee, has provided additional information on this subject below. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to you, our Members, for your continuous support of the Swiss Club as well as the Committee, Sub-committees, Management and Club employees and our vendors for their contributions over the past year. Yours sincerely,

Rolf Gerber

Swiss Club Redevelopment Update by William Forwood

It is my pleasure to update you on the progress of the Swiss Club’s redevelopment plans. After a competitive tender, Swiss Club has engaged Zarch Collaboratives as the project architect and project partner for the Swiss Club renovation. Designs and renderings are being finalised, taking into account the valuable feedback and recommendations received from Members during the Townhall Meeting and Club Surveys. The Committee and Zarch Collaboratives are reviewing existing Club drawings, buildings, heritage overlays, electrical and topographic plans in the course of developing the Club’s new designs. The exciting renovation and refurbishment concept designs and presentations will be ready prior to the annual Club AGM on 24 September 2018. Budget and project timeline are also being prepared, based on the designs being finalised.

A Message from the

General Manager

Our famous Swiss Club Oktoberfest kicks off on Wednesday 26 and concludes on Sunday 30 September. I hope you have your tickets in hand, as Friday and Saturday are already ‘full house’.

Dear Members, It is nice to see the Club buzzing again after the summer break. I see many new as well as familiar faces around the Club, kids attending school again, families sharing holiday adventures and everyone generally settling in to the daily routine of work and life. On that note, I extend a warm welcome to our new Members and welcome back our existing Members. I truly hope you had a ‘splash’ at our ‘Welcome Back Pool Party’ held on 19 August. It was indeed a great deal of dripping wet fun. Thank you for your participation and for supporting these fun new initiatives. Look out for photos in the next issue of ‘Relax’. Briefly recapping past activities and promotions, I would like to thank all Members for allowing the clubhouse closure on 16 July. The day provided our maintenance crew with the necessary time to conform to the regulatory annual electric power shutdown, and for our Club staff to bond and recharge during our ‘Sports Day’ at Sentosa. Sand, sun and lots of fun ensued as the day kicked off with an Amazing Race at Siloso beach, followed by a succulent Chinese dinner at One°15 Marina Club, our affiliated club on Sentosa. Pictures paint a thousand words, so see for yourself on page 18. The ever popular Swiss National Day was once again well attended despite the school term starting a little later this year. With alpenhorn tunes filling the air, our Swiss Club President Rolf Gerber welcomed all to this year’s celebration, followed by an introduction to our newly appointed Swiss Ambassador H.E. Fabrice Filliez and Guest of Honour, Swiss State Secretary, Pascale Baeriswyl. Pascale gave a engaging and inclusive Swiss National Day address. Despite a little drizzle during the lampion and bonfire session, this year’s Swiss National Day was a wonderfully warm celebration of friendship between Members and guests, Europeans and Singaporeans alike. Thank you to the Swiss Alpine Lions for ‘playing in the rain’ and to our sponsors for the delightful lucky draw prizes. Our Swiss National Day promotion, offering 50% off selected membership categories, is ongoing till 15 September 2018. Do share

this with friends and business partners, as it is truly a tremendous opportunity to join our lovely Club. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for Monday 24 September 2018, and your attendance and support is greatly appreciated. The AGM offers an excellent overview of initiatives, financial reporting and, most importantly, the presentation of projects and upcoming redevelopments for Members’ review and voting. Three Committee Members have unfortunately informed us that they will be stepping down at this year’s AGM, so we are therefore looking for volunteers to assist at Committee level. Should you be interested to take part in shaping the Club’s future, kindly get in touch with me at carsten.kjeldmann@swissclub.org.sg for more details and information. Following the AGM is our famous Swiss Club Oktoberfest, which kicks off on Wednesday 26 and concludes on Sunday 30 September. I hope you have your tickets in hand, as Friday and Saturday are already ‘full house’. As we gear up for the party of the year, do remember Sunday is family day ‘Frühschoppen’, so come along with the family for the magic show, bouncy castle, jolly good music and great German fare. Kindly take a minute to pencil these dates on your calendar, and do remember not to drink and drive, please. Look out for a ‘scarily good’ Halloween party and a delicious Wine and Cheese Fair later this year. Have fun and enjoy everything the Club has to offer! Warmest regards,

Carsten Kjeldmann General Manager carsten.kjeldmann@swissclub.org.sg “Swiss Club, the Home for All Nationalities”

Oktoberfest Special Brew This synergistic combination of two classic German beers, Oktoberfest and Weizen, has a cloudy body with some amber hints. The head is frothy, pleasantly white and soft-textured. Lacing starts with a series of rings but soon breaks into abstract art as the glass progresses. Residual carbonation is very lively. The wheat aroma with a hint of fruit and clove combines with a strong malty flavour at the back and a lovely hoppiness. Pairs well with hearty Oktoberfest dishes as well as juicy steaks and strong cheeses.

FABULOUS SWISS This year’s Swiss National Day celebrations attracted around 600 people, far surpassing the turnouts of previous years. The weather was kind – drizzling as if to tease us, then stopping, at intervals throughout the evening. Read on for the highlights. THE GUESTS KEPT POURING IN By 6pm, the Swiss Club lawn was bustling with people, chatting and enjoying the apero of Swiss wines kindly sponsored by the Embassy of Switzerland. Pre-booked guests already numbered 510, and a healthy stream of walk-ins continued until the speeches began just after 6.40pm. The weather was almost-perfect, except for an ominous rumbling of thunder that came and went without delivering on its threat of rain. Our Committee President Rolf Gerber briefly welcomed all Members and non-Members to the event, before handing over the microphone to the Ambassador of Switzerland, His Excellency Fabrice Filliez, who gave his first National Day address in Singapore. The Guest of Honour, Ms Pascale Baeriswyl, State Secretary

and Head of the Directorate of Political Affairs of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, then took to the stage. Ms Baeriswyl’s speech touched on many topics that resonate among Swiss and indeed all expats living abroad. ON THE MEANING OF HOME “I already feel at home here. Indeed, nearly 18 years ago, I moved with my family to Southeast Asia, and we call Southeast Asia ‘home’,” shared Ms Baeriswyl. After citing the thing that each of her family members misses most about the region, from the delicious food to the special light you only find in these parts, she offered her own theory of home – a place where love and learning co-exist. Standing on the stage, against the lush green backdrop and one of the prettiest sunsets to ever grace our skies, Ms Baeriswyl generously said, “I think I’ve never given a speech in such a beautiful, exotic location.” She jokingly said that she’d heard of monkey sightings in the Club’s grounds – and, as she was born in the Year of the

NATIONAL DAY! referencing the recent summit between the US and Korean leaders. ALMOST AN AERIAL SALUTE When commenting on the long history of the Swiss Club in Singapore and the evidence of ‘Swissness’ all around, Ms Baeriswyl was interrupted by the din of fighter planes flying overhead, an aerial dress rehearsal for Singapore’s own National Day celebrations.

Monkey, would welcome a chance meeting with one. (Numerous squirrels were spotted that evening, but no monkeys, alas.) ON THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN SWITZERLAND AND SINGAPORE Invariably, every Swiss National Day speech touches on the synergies between Switzerland and Singapore. Commenting on our excellent bilateral relations, Ms Baeriswyl cited a few of the many similarities between the two small nations, including our diminutive sizes, our reliance on human resources as opposed to natural ones, and our export-oriented economies. Ms Baeriswyl shared that Singapore was Switzerland’s main trading partner in Southeast Asia, given that over half of all Swiss exports to Southeast Asia end up here. She also remarked that she fully understands why Swiss Federal Councils like to visit Singapore, since both Switzerland and Singapore have established a tradition of building and facilitating platforms for discussion,

ON CHAMPIONING ‘GOOD COMPROMISES’ Ms Baeriswyl went on to urge Swiss nationals to uphold the tradition of volunteering that is rooted in Switzerland’s social and political life. She concluded her engaging speech by assuring the audience that Swiss democracy will remain committed to those good compromises that result in long-term solutions, transcending the smallest common denominator and building bridges for the good of all. FOOD, FANFARE AND FESTIVITIES After the playing of the Swiss National Anthem, our General Manager Carsten Kjeldmann declared the buffet open at around 7.10pm. He encouraged the guests to use the evening’s free seating as a great opportunity to get to know new people. The evening had all the ingredients of a wonderful celebration. The Swiss Alpine Lions provided rousing live music, interspersed with crowd-pleasing favourites piped through the sound system. Chef Adrian and his team once again put on a lavish spread. Three raclette stations drew constant queues,

and hearty traditional favourites like roast pork and sausages were counter-balanced by lighter offerings including inventive salads and a delicately flavoured mushroom risotto. The dessert buffet was a constant magnet for young and old alike, with its jewel-coloured little fruit tarts, carrot cake, chocolate cake, fresh fruit salad and a new addition – trays of exquisite Swiss chocolates by Läderach, a Swiss chocolatier soon to launch in Singapore. A lucky draw and a lampion parade completed the evening’s programme. Carsten recruited a band of rosy-cheeked little children to assist him on stage by drawing out names at intervals throughout the evening. Attractive prizes included Victorinox luggage, Swatch maxi watches that measured 1.5 metres in length, Kose skincare courtesy of Decorté, and a month-long Swiss Club membership worth $400. The lampion parade, an annual highlight, was serenaded by the Swiss Alpine Lions. As Carsten led the parade of children and their parents to the bonfire site in the carpark, a smattering of rain began to fall. Once again, the elements were merely teasing us, as the rain dried up within minutes of Carsten setting the bonfire alight with a theatrical flourish followed by a burst of leaping flames.

You don’t have to be Swiss to celebrate Swiss National Day. As it falls so close to Singapore’s National Day, it’s a celebration for both countries. Nany Gotze

AN INCLUSIVE CELEBRATION Looking around at the diverse crowd, and overhearing snippets of conversation, one couldn’t help but be impressed by the diversity of the guests. Nany Gotze, a Singaporean lady married to a German husband, both of them Members of the Club for over 20 years, put it well when she said, “You don’t have to be Swiss to celebrate Swiss National Day. As it falls so close to Singapore’s National Day, it’s a celebration for both countries and strengthens the connections between them.” Nany’s husband, Bernd Gotze, who is the Honorary Legal Counsel for Swiss Embassy in Singapore, summed up the sentiments of the evening when he said, “Fabulous ’18!”

How to Prevent Decay in Condos by Wilfred Boerrigter

For over ten years, I have been fascinated by the question on how to get condos in their best possible shape. My answer is that this can only be achieved by education and connecting people in order to erase dysfunctional residential complexes from Eurasian cities. To achieve this, I started CoPropSpot.com, a start-up that aims to be the authoritative global platform for the prevention of decay in condos. FOCUS ON CONDOS

In condos, two or more owners each have a single claim to a defined part of the property. Typically, there is a form of homeowners’ association (HOA) in place that makes and enforces rules for the properties within its jurisdiction and is responsible for correct management.

DYSFUNCTIONAL COMPLEXES LEAD TO DECAY

The problem faced by condos and HOAs is that most residents and owners have a lack of knowledge, which results in two things. The first is a lack of interest and therefore a lack of commitment to the wellbeing of the condo. The second is irrational or misinformed decision-making. Both lead to a dysfunctional complex and ultimately to decay.

PROVEN SOLUTION

Our start-up is based on my ten years of extensive research and testing of findings to help improve the functioning of HOAs in two European countries. This resulted in the ‘395 Framework’ – comprising Three Pillars, Nine Topics and Five Stages. The framework is supported with deep local knowledge provided by Country Managers and local specialists, who are trained to share their expertise on this platform. The main focus is on residents, owners and board members of a condo as well as helping vendors and governments in a growing number of countries. No matter where the HOA complex falls within our 395 Framework, our services are designed to help the stakeholders move towards a perfectly functional state.

COUNTRY MANAGERS TO SPEED UP GROWTH

For the expansion of CoPropSpot.com, I am looking for entrepreneurs who are willing to take up the role of Country Manager and help us in our mission to prevent decay in condos. As a Country Manager, you will be responsible for the content creation, revenue generation and the expansion of our growing community.

If you are interested in becoming a Country Manager or have any questions, please contact Wilfred Boerrigter at

Party of Champions E V E N T S

On 16 July 2018, our staff enjoyed a well-deserved day of team-building, fun, food and friendship at Palawan Beach. The theme of this year’s event was ‘sports’. It started in the early afternoon with an ‘Amazing Race’ and stretched into the evening. GREAT VENUE, GREAT SPORTS The day kicked off with the arrival of guests at ONE°15 Marina Club Singapore. Clad in a dazzling variety of sports apparel, they travelled by shuttle bus to Palawan Beach where they formed teams and competed in an adrenaline-pumping, appetitebuilding ‘Amazing Race’ event. Next came fun pre-dinner activities, followed by an opening speech by Carsten, dinner, an awards ceremony and a lucky draw. It was a great day, not only in terms of sheer fun but also in terms of acknowledging the efforts of our hard-working staff.

THANKS TO OUR MEMBERS AND SPONSORS On behalf of the management and staff of the Swiss Club, a big ‘thank you’ goes out to all Members for your understanding over the limited operation of Club outlets and services on the day of the event. Post-summer, Pre-Oktoberfest

Gut-busting!

Embrace these strategies to get rid of that gut before the drinking festival begins.

1

EAT CLEAN FOR A MONTH After indulging in all your favourite foods back home, now is a good time to embark on a clean eating phase. Consume clean salads (dressing-free) for the best results. Always remember to consume sufficient complex carbohydrates and proteins daily.

2

GO DRY If you regularly consume alcohol, not consuming alcohol could be one of the quickest and most impactful strategies to losing post summer weight gain. Not only will it help with your weight goals, it will also help with improving your recovery time. Alcohol depletes your vitamin Bs and other essential minerals, thus causing longer recovery times.

21

3

GET BACK INTO AN EXERCISE ROUTINE After all the holidaying, it can be hard to hit the gym or put on your running shoes and get going. Find someone to motivate you or join a group workout class. Make it a daily or every-other-day routine. Prioritise your workouts, as we all know life hits you with a million things. Ensure you keep that allocated time for your workout and do not allow work to get in the way.

4

PROGRESSIVELY INCREASE THE INTENSITY I cannot stress this point enough. I have lost count of the times I have heard the age-old complaint – I’ve been training but do not see any improvements in myself. While your diet might be one thing that’s holding you back, always remember that progression is key to ensuring continual improvement. Do not kill yourself on Day 1, or by the end of the week you’ll have given up. Find an intensity that works for you and progressively increase it to constantly challenge yourself.

5

BE CONSISTENT If you want to see the maximum benefits, then keep at it! Doing something for six months is not an effective long-term solution. Keeping at it constantly, and constantly pushing the barriers, will see you improving both physically and mentally. With more regular training, you will notice the positive influence that physical exercise has on your mind.

HAPPY CALORIE-BURNING!

Fitness Myths

Debunked 1

MY BODY IS HOLDING ON TO TOO MUCH WATER. If only I had a dollar every time someone told me this. Your body only stores nutrients it requires. If your body did start storing excess water, you would need to seek medical treatment.

2

IF I CUT OUT CARBS, I’LL LOSE WEIGHT. Carbohydrates (carbs) are one of the most misunderstood macro-nutrients. Cutting out carbs from your diet is a very difficult thing to actually do, unless you only consume meat for every meal. Almost every plant and fruit has some form of carb in it. What you want to cut out primarily is simple sugars. Simple sugars are the primary reason for weight gain and other illnesses. They are commonly found in refined foods – generally any of the white carbs. Substituting white carbs for quinoa or red rice will give you the energy you require for your daily performance while not adding extra weight.

3

LIFTING WEIGHTS WILL MAKE ME BIG. Resistance training has grown in popularity over the years. There are many unproven claims about weight lifting, including stunting of growth and causing you to become big. Another misconception is that lifting weights will make you big. The only thing resistance training successfully does is increase muscle mass. In order for you to become big, you will need a surplus of calories. So as long as you keep your meals in check, your weight is not going to skyrocket!

4

THE GYM IS BORING. This is undoubtedly one of the most common misconceptions about the gym. A lot of people do not visit the gym as they think it is boring. Usually this is due to the amount time spent on a cardiovascular machine. An average workout should take no longer than 60 minutes, and consist of both cardiovascular and resistance training. If you’re spending all that time on the treadmill, get some help from a trainer or join a class!

Breathe in... Breathe out...

NAMASTE! Mind and body wellness is of vital importance for our overall health and well-being. While we live in a society that focuses on the physical, and our day-to-day lives become busier, it becomes harder to achieve mental and spiritual wellness.

MIND, BODY AND SOUL The mind, body and soul are so intrinsically connected that it is essential to maintain a balance between the three major areas of wellness to truly live healthily. Recognising the importance of promoting mind and body wellness, the Swiss Club hosted two international mind and body wellness events – namely International Pilates Day on 5 May 2018 and International Day of Yoga on 23 June 2018. Both events were well attended by Members and members of the public who got to experience the Club in a zentastic state! Post-exercises, participants were treated to sumptuous No Bake Energy Balls on International Pilates Day. Yogis were served antioxidant-rich Rasudi herbal water at the International Day of Yoga event. The Club would like to thank the High Commission of India in Singapore, Om Vedic Heritage Centre, Flow and Chai, and Island Wellness for breathing life into these holistic initiatives!

Immersed in Fun and Learning Over the past few years, aquaDucks has been organising swimming camps during the school holidays. This year round, we decided to shake it up a little and add in two weeks of fun camps in addition to our learning camps. FULL-ON FUN CAMPS Our fun camps this summer ran from 25 June to 29 June and from 6 August to 10 August. The main objective of the fun camp was for the kids to have a great time. There were loads of fun activities for our youngsters in the pool and in the sports hall. It was a great opportunity for chilling out after a long school year. VALUABLE LEARNING CAMPS This summer’s learning camps ran over three weeks – from 2 July to 6 July, from 9 July to 13 July and from 30 July to 4 August. These camps were attended by children with a wide range of different swimming abilities, aged from four to 12 years old. Our goal during this camp was to make all kids water-safe, develop their confidence in the water and improve their overall skills and swimming techniques. The camps were a great success, and we look forward to holding our swim camps again in October. Please look out for more details in Swiss Club newsletters.

The Switzerland-Singapore Tennis Festival The Embassy of Switzerland is proud to announce the launch of a new addition to its calendar of events: the Switzerland-Singapore Tennis Festival, organised in collaboration with Sport Singapore. It will be held on the morning of Saturday 27 October 2018 at the Swiss Club. A TRADITION OF GREAT TENNIS Given that Switzerland has produced world-renowned tennis players such as Roger Federer, Martina Hingis, Stanislas Wawrinka, Timea Bacsinszky and Belinda Bencic, a tennis festival is a fitting platform for us to promote sports, intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding.

A tennis festival is a fitting platform for us to promote sports, intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding. We are very happy to have the Swiss Club as our main sponsor, providing us with the courts, coaches from Forty-Fifteen Pte. Ltd. and a beautiful setting. The festival will take place during the final weekend of the Women’s Tennis Association tournament in Singapore – a perfect time to get children and teenagers in Singapore involved in the world of tennis. Kids from international and local schools as well as the Sport Singapore academies are eligible to participate in the Switzerland-Singapore Tennis Festival 2018. We are expecting about 100 junior tennis players aged from 9 to 16 years. Players can register for two different categories: competitive and non-competitive. In the competitive division, schools and academies can register children up to the age of 16 years old, to form teams and play in matches for girls, boys and mixed doubles. In the Article and photos courtesy of the Embassy of Switzerland

non-competitive category, for which the age cut-off is 11 years old, younger players can showcase their skills in single mini-tennis matches. Throughout the morning, we will also offer mini-tennis and paddle clinics supervised by the tennis coaches. BUILDING ON THE SUCCESS OF OUR FOOTBALL EVENT The Switzerland-Singapore Tennis Festival was inspired by the Ambassador’s Football Cup, the football tournament format that the Swiss Embassy started back in 2010 at the Swiss Club during the Youth Olympic Games (SYOG) in Singapore. On the occasion of the 50-year anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Singapore in 2017, the tournament was brought to the big stage: the floating platform at Marina Bay. It also got a new name – Switzerland-Singapore Football Festival – and was co-hosted with Sport Singapore. The resounding success of this collaboration encouraged us to continue working with Sport Singapore and enabled us to invite even more kids to play in the second Switzerland-Singapore Football Festival this year. By extending our efforts to tennis, we hope to reach out to even more children and build on the experience gained from our football event. Just like our football tournament, the SwitzerlandSingapore Tennis Festival welcomes boys and girls from various cultural backgrounds and aims to foster a passion for sports and cultural exchange among the youth in Singapore.

A Decade at the Swiss School in Singapore Ask Lucas Aschwanden, Lucien Bernard-Brunel and Max Shoppe if they are good friends and the answer would be a resounding “Yes! All three have spent the last decade together at the Swiss School. FROM TOTS TO BOYS TO MEN The three boys started together as toddlers in our Little Tots classes and finished in our Primary 5 and Primary 6 classes.

Lucas Aschwa nden

Their fondest memories of the school, however, differ greatly. Max likes the fact that whenever he enters the school grounds, he is able to leave the hustle and bustle of the city far behind him. He enjoys the peace and quiet and cites this as a reason why he is able to concentrate well during classes. Lucas feels at home here as it is a small and intimate school, and he will miss the family-like atmosphere where almost everyone, from the teachers to the front office receptionist, knows him. For Lucien, it is the people who made his stay truly outstanding. He treasures the time spent here with all of his friends and has said he will miss them the most. MEMORIES AND KEEPSAKES On 19 June 2018, the boys each received a custom-made T-shirt, with the number of years they have spent at the school printed on the back, to commemorate their decade at the Swiss School. Principal Markus Pallmann organised a small ceremony where students and teachers looked back at class photos taken more than 10 years ago when the boys first joined the school, then cheered on the boys as they donned their gifts with pride.

The Lims Three Generations of

Loving the Swiss Club At this year’s Father’s Day Lunch, we met the lovely Lim family. Mr and Mrs Edward Lim have been Members of the Swiss Club for 21 years. They’ve seen their children, and now their children’s children, play in its grounds. EARLY LOCAL MEMBERS Edward and Linda Lim number among the earliest Singaporean Members of the Swiss Club. Edward recalls that they were nominated by the then-Club Secretary, Mr Michael Lutweyer, a procedure that was once required for non-Swiss to join. Edward is a successful businessman, and continues to fill the role of his company’s Executive Director. His wife, Linda, is retired. A glance at their smiling faces and flowing conversation confirms that they are a close-knit and loving family. Their four adult children are just six years apart in age – 30-year-old Shaun, 29-year-old Sabrina, 27-yearold Sharon and 24-year-old Sherman. They have two grandsons, Lucas and Issac, aged four and two respectively. Apart from family, Edward derives great satisfaction in having nurtured a small company to one that is now listed on the stock exchange. His quiet, unassuming manner belies his success. A FULL LIFE These days, Edward and Linda enjoy cruising with family and friends. They cherish their weekly family gatherings and socialise with friends, neighbours and their church community. When we asked Edward to share the secret of his success cum happiness, he offered this sage advice, “No man

is an island; friends and community are important.” HAPPY MEMORIES Edward and Linda clearly love the Swiss Club, though admittedly they visit less frequently than in the 90s and the 2000s when their own children were young. As we were finding a meaningful spot to snap a photo for this article, Linda wistfully recalled her days as a young mother, spent watching her children as they splashed in the pool.

We love that ‘away-from-thecrowd’ feeling. Edward Lim

“We love that ‘away-from-the-crowd’ feeling,” said Edward. Linda pointed out that it’s one of the places outside the home where one can relax, knowing that small children will be safe and not get lost. DINING RECOMMENDATIONS Edward and Linda enjoy dining at the Swiss Club. They especially love the beefsteak and bread served at Arbenz, but miss the pork knuckles and beef rendang that are no longer available at Pergola.

“My children used to love playing in the pool. Those days, there were no changing sheds and towel machines,” said Linda, as she cast an admiring eye over the many improvements the pool area has undergone. Both Edward and Linda emphasise their appreciation of the Club’s exclusiveness, its family-friendly atmosphere and its natural setting.

Above all, Edward and Linda appreciate the long-serving F&B personnel, and made a point to single out Margaret. Going by the number of times she is praised by Members, she has become a kind of unofficial ‘poster girl’ for the Club. (Thank you for always greeting the editorial team with a friendly smile, Margaret.) LOOKING BACK AND LOOKING FORWARD Thank you, Edward and Linda, for the trip down memory lane. We look forward to seeing you and your family at the Club.

TENDER LOVING CARE FOR STRESSED TRESSES After a Botanical Hair Therapy session at the Swiss Club’s Aveda Salon, my frizzy, damaged hair emerged silky-smooth and bouncy after 75 minutes of intensive pampering. CUSTOMISED CARE AND BLISSFUL RELAXATION While I sipped on a cup of refreshing caffeine-free tea, Salon Manager Darren Chua felt my straw-like strands and diplomatically delved into my follicular history. On the wrong side of 50, my much-abused hair had survived several colouring disasters. Darren kindly assured me that he’d seen much worse, and prescribed a customised cocktail of dry remedy and damage remedy shampoo, treatment and pre-dry products.

Over at the basin, I enjoyed a blissfully relaxing neck and scalp massage along with my wash, courtesy of Darren. I fought the urge to nod off and forced my heavy lids open. The salon windows framed a mini nature documentary of swaying palms, shifting clouds and gently falling rain… (Just for a moment, I thought I was in Bali.)

After the intensive strengthening treatment and gentle blow-dry, I left the salon with a bounce in my hair and a spring in my step. My mood, spirit and hair were truly uplifted.

Here’s an overview of the process.

Aaron, Family Man

Aaron Lim, your Deputy General Manager, loves the family culture at the Swiss Club and cherishes a family of his own. M Hotel, Pan Pacific Hotel, Swissotel Merchant Court and Creative Eateries.

HE’S WORKED EVERYWHERE Surprisingly, for a man of his apparent youthfulness, Aaron is a married father of two. His children’s names are endearingly inked on his arms – Seth, aged nine, and Saige, aged six. Wife Peggy is a clinic executive. Having a family is obviously a strong incentive to work hard and clamber up the corporate ladder, which is exactly what Aaron has been doing for the last 20 years or so. Since 1994, Aaron has worked his way up from a waiter to senior management positions at ONE°15 Marina Club, The British Club, Goodwood Park Hotel,

Compared to his previous workplaces, Aaron sees the Swiss Club as unique in terms of location, ambience and setting. Above all, he loves the overarching family culture that embraces both Members and staff. FOOD, OF COURSE! We had to ask the question – what does Aaron like to eat? He cites his “ultimate favourite food” as the Nonya dish, Ayam Buah Keluak. When we learned that he is a fourth generation Peranakan, it made perfect sense. He also shared his recommendations from the Club’s kitchen From Pergola, Aaron recommends the new healthy menu selections – such as the Hormone Free and Sustainable

Barramundi, as well as the Gourmet Beef Burger and the legendary Butter Chicken with Garlic Naan from the Tandoori Corner. From Arbenz, he heaps praise on all the mains and singles out the 1.2kg Prime Ribs. After hours, Aaron prioritises family time with his wife and kids, and also enjoys fishing, swimming and playing pool. He’s also a big movie buff, and devours movies like a hungry man tucking into a buffet. AT YOUR SERVICE When asked for some parting words, Aaron said, “My team and I are always on hand to assist any of our Members, no matter how big or small the issue.” You heard the man. Do not hesitate to approach Aaron. He’s a friendly guy – we can vouch for it.
