A Note from the Editor
Inside this Issue
Dear Members and readers, Hello, again, and welcome to the second issue of ‘Swiss Club’, your biannual Club magazine. It seems that a lot of time has passed since last I sat down to write this note. Though to be fair, it has been all of six months. I wonder if everyone’s concept of time has warped over the last two-plus years? During lockdown, time seemed to pass at a snail’s pace. Now, since almost all restrictions have been lifted, it seems to have sped up as we catch up on doing all the things we’ve been missing – like socialising freely, exercising with friends, attending parties and dancing! Here’s the good news. There’s no better place to enjoy all of those activities than the Swiss Club. All of the Club’s excellent restaurants are renovated and open for business. Your newly renovated gym has been unveiled, and the legendary Oktoberfest is finally back after a no-show of two years. Dust off your dirndls and lederhosen and put on your dancing shoes – it is going to be epic!

Of course, it’s hard to ignore the headlines about the rising cost of living and the escalating impact of climate change. Looking on the bright side, the Club has everything you need for a great lifestyle, including affordable restaurants on a par with the best in town. And you can enjoy an endless supply of healthy fresh air on Club grounds, knowing that the greenery is helping cool Singapore and pumping oxygen into our dense urban environment.

A Message from the Committee
GENERAL
I URGE YOU TO CONTINUE TO FREQUENT OUR WONDERFUL RESTAURANTS, WHICH TRULY DO OFFER SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, FROM THE MOST CULINARY ADVENTUROUS AMONG US TO THE NOSTALGIC DINER IN SEARCH OF A TASTE OF HOME.
Dear Members, First of all, I would like to thank all of you for your wonderful support of the Club in these recent challenging years. We are now back to a semblance of normality which means that many of our beloved annual events can resume after a hiatus of two years! In this spirit, I do hope you enjoyed our recent Swiss Club Summerfest on 4 June 2022. Not only was it a fun-filled day for all ages, but it also served to introduce many prospective Members to our beautifully refurbished Clubhouse. Congratulations to all involved in the meticulous planning and execution. As your Treasurer, I am especially pleased to share that the annual Swiss National Day celebration will take place for the first time since 2019 on 6 August 2022. This epic event not only generates a healthy stream of revenue for the Club, but reinforces our reputation as a true pillar of the Swiss community. We look forward to sharing this very special day with everyone. If you haven’t already done so, book your tickets for what promises to be a wonderful evening of culture, food, music and festivity. You’ll be happy to hear that the ongoing renovations of the Pavilion are progressing well and should be tentatively completed by the end of July. Our new gym and studio have reopened, with most of the equipment already delivered. All of the equipment is brand new, and the changing rooms now sport a modern vibe. The function rooms
have been fully refurbished and would make ideal venues for birthday parties, meetings, AGMs and corporate events. In addition, the outdoor fitness area has been relocated to create an integrated fitness area at the Pavilion. Do make full use of these upgraded facilities – I am sure you will agree that they have definitely been worth the wait. It is my duty as Treasurer to inform you that we have made the difficult but unfortunately necessary decision to increase our F&B prices. Hence you will notice incremental increases across our menu items. We have endeavoured to keep these increases as modest as possible and thank you in advance for your understanding. I urge you to continue to frequent our wonderful restaurants, which truly do offer something for everyone, from the most culinary adventurous among us to the nostalgic diner in search of a taste of home. I personally recommend the Sustainable Barramundi Fillet. Here’s to a physically and financially healthy and happy second half of 2022. See you at the Swiss Club! Yours sincerely,
D. Schacher

GENEROUS SPONSORSHIP OF THE PAVILION PROJECT
The extensive Pavilion renovation is progressing very well, and you will soon be able to enjoy all the upgraded facilities.
The founding families of the Diethelm and Keller Group have always had a close association with the Swiss Club in Singapore. The journey started when in the late 1860s, two young Swiss pioneers, Wilhelm Heinrich Diethelm and Edward Anton Keller, ventured to the Far East to trade products between Europe and Asia. GENERAL
It gives me great pleasure to inform you that we have received a very generous donation from the Diethelm Keller Group in support of our Pavilion project. The Diethelm Keller Group is not only providing us with beautiful furniture from their premium brands, Dedon and Gloster, but also an additional cash contribution to cover a significant part of the renovation costs. On behalf of the Committee, the Club Management as well as all our Members I would like to express my sincere gratitude for this generous donation.
Singapore and Keller chose the Philippines as his new home.
Wilhelm Heinrich Diethelm and Edward Anton Keller - Diethelm Keller Group Over time, descendants of the founding families expanded the trading business to marketing, logistics and related services, while also diversifying into industrial and travel activities. Today the Diethelm Keller Group is the anchor shareholder of DKSH, a leader in market expansion services with over 33,000 employees around the globe.

7 SWISS CLUB JUL - DEC 2022
Andreas Keller, Chairman of the Diethelm Keller Group, stated, “The Swiss Club has always been part of our legacy, and the aim of our donation is to help the Club to thrive for decades to come.” We are looking forward to welcoming any of the founding family members to our Club at any time. I would like to express once again a big thank you for their generous support of the Swiss Club Singapore.
A Message from the General Manager Dear Members,
8 SWISS CLUB JUL - DEC 2022
GENERAL
I’M PLEASED TO SHARE THAT THE PAVILION RENOVATIONS ARE FINALLY COMPLETE, AND OUR NEW GYM IS ALREADY OPEN. BY MID-JULY, OUR PHASE 2 RENOVATIONS, COMPRISING MAKEOVERS FOR OUR FUNCTION ROOMS AND SALON, SHOULD ALSO BE UNVEILED. I AM CONFIDENT THAT YOU’LL BE IMPRESSED.
It is with genuine pleasure that I am finally able to welcome many of you back from your summer travels. I trust that you enjoyed many heartwarming reunions with family and friends and returned with a stockpile of happy memories to tide you over till your next trip home. Obviously, I share your relief at the lifting of almost all the pandemicrelated restrictions, and your sense of gratitude at the great job that the Singapore Government has done in managing this global crisis on local soil.
Of course the Club’s biggest party of the year is undoubtedly Oktoberfest. This year’s Oktoberfest will be the 21st to be held at the Swiss Club, which is something of a milestone. Words alone cannot do justice to the epic scale and incredible atmosphere of this 5-day event, which has to be experienced to be appreciated. Going by the speed of this year’s ticket sales, it seems that everyone is itching for some partying. Do secure your tickets soon to avoid disappointment.
I greatly enjoyed the chance to finally welcome many of the 600 new Members that have joined us over the past two years, in person, over four evenings in May and June. It is testament to the hard work of our Membership team, and the power of positive word-of-mouth, that we continued to attract new Members despite the conspicuous absence of events and numerous restrictions that affected our operations. Now that we are free to socialise, I urge our new Members to make up for lost time and fully immerse themselves in Club life.
Aside from the biggies of Swiss National Day and Oktoberfest, our Marketing and Events teams organise many smaller but no less enjoyable events and activities throughout the year. Though our hugely popular glamping events will end in July, they will resume in November and December. These ‘sleepovers’ on the Lawn are fantastic fun for families, and especially kids. The adults get their share of fun, too, with an adults’ pool party scheduled in October, an 80s disco party in November, and a wine and cheese evening in December.
Soon after this issue of ‘Swiss Club’ magazine is published, we’ll be resuming our annual Swiss National Day celebrations on Saturday 6 August (the official holiday falls on Monday 1 August). This is a celebration for not only our Swiss Members, but for everyone who loves good food and good company, and appreciates the cordial bilateral relations between our two strangely similar countries. Both Switzerland and Singapore punch above their weight in so many areas, from technology to healthcare and tourism. We both enjoy stable governance and great infrastructure. And we’re both multicultural and multilingual meltingpots. Why even our flags share the same colour scheme – and our National Days are only days apart!
I’m pleased to share that the Pavilion renovations are finally complete, and our new gym is already open. By mid-July, our Phase 2 renovations, comprising makeovers for our function rooms and salon, should also be unveiled. I am confident that you’ll be impressed. Welcome back to ‘normal’, and see you soon at the Swiss Club! Yours sincerely,
A. Lim

A Farewell Message from Ambassador Fabrice Filliez AFTER FOUR YEARS AS THE HEAD OF THE SWISS EMBASSY IN SINGAPORE, AMBASSADOR FABRICE FILLIEZ SHARES SOME PARTING WORDS UPON LEAVING THE LION CITY TO START HIS NEW POST IN POLAND.
GENERAL
Dear Swiss in Singapore, dear friends of Switzerland, When I arrived with my spouse Ksenia in the summer of 2018, we were excited to build on the long-standing ties and friendship between our two countries. And what a fantastic journey it has been! My tenure in Singapore has been rich and rewarding, both professionally and privately. It is not just an opportunity but a privilege to be working as a diplomat in Singapore, not least because of the well-established Swiss community and close connections to our Swiss pillars such as the Swiss Club, Swiss School, Swiss Association and the Swiss Chamber of Commerce. Photo credit: Swiss Association in Singapore The Swiss Association in Singapore and Daniela Erni, President SAS, bidding farewell to Ambassador Filliez at the Swiss Club.
Get to know Ambassador Frank Grütter, who will arrive in August from Switzerland, in the next issue of ‘Swiss Club’.
My time in Singapore has been marked by one of the most difficult health crises in recent history. The COVID-19 pandemic, which started in the beginning of 2020, has been making a deep impact on both the local and Swiss community, disrupting social relations and business networks, and testing our patience and solidarity. One important aspect of my work during the pandemic was to keep the Swiss community actively informed through letters, newsletters and virtual meetings that were open to the public. The embassy staff have done an exemplary job in assisting the community, dedicating countless hours to fielding the many requests and enquiries. Although it has not always been possible to provide concrete solutions to the various problems that have arisen, we have spared no efforts to support the Swiss community. Likewise, the Swiss community have been amazing, showing strength, solidarity and resilience throughout these challenging times.
During my tenure, our bilateral relations have deepened at all levels across a broad spectrum of areas, from trade and finance to education and culture. We successfully hosted visits from official delegations, both ministerial and at working level, encouraging exchanges, strengthening existing collaborations and paving the way for cooperation in new areas such as the digital economy, the cyber field, digitalisation and scientific diplomacy. We have also strengthened our collaboration with our Swiss and Singaporean local partners and supported various projects in the fields of education, science, sustainability, innovation and culture. One example is the +Pavilion which is open until the end of July at Marina Barrage (see Pages 40 - 41 of this issue of ‘Swiss Club’). I take this opportunity to thank all of our partners for their trust and cooperative spirit over the last four years. The historic Swiss Club became like a second home for me, and I am thankful to its devoted staff who have made every visit pleasant and every event a success. I have many vibrant and lasting memories of my time in Singapore. When people ask me what I will miss most about this place, my answer is simple and constant: the people! I hope to keep in touch with many of you and look forward to future opportunities that will bring me back to the lion city. My very best wishes, and a heartfelt thank you for your support.

The Fun-tastic, Sun-sational
EVENTS
ON SATURDAY 4 JUNE, THE SWISS CLUB HELD ITS ANNUAL SUMMERFEST AFTER A BREAK OF TWO YEARS. AS YOU CAN SEE, WE MADE UP FOR LOST TIME AND HAD A WONDERFUL TIME.
MOBILE DEVICES OFF, GAMES ON! Our sporting young guests enthusiastically took part in the lineup of games. The bouncy castle was a hit with the little ones, whose irrepressible energy seemed boundless. The ball and bucket toss, ping pong toss and nerf gun shooting range tested the motor skills of contestants young and old, while exquisite henna painting offered a more sedate activity for those patient enough to sit still for the requisite few minutes.
21 SWISS CLUB JUL - DEC 2022
EARLY RAIN, FALSE ALARM After morning showers had organisers’ nerves on edge, the sun came out and set the scene for a picture-perfect Summerfest. More than 400 registered guests, comprising Swiss Club Members and members of the public, turned up from 11am for a full day of fun in the sun (with sunblock, of course) till 5pm.
22 SWISS CLUB JUL - DEC 2022
EVENTS
A carnival classic, the good old dunk tank proved as popular as ever. Two sessions of dunking, at 11.30am and 2.30pm, saw many spectacular topples and copious giggles and squeals from delighted onlookers. Nobody was spared, not even the Club’s President!
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD There’s something about the delicious aroma of food grilling in the open air that always works up an appetite, and going by the impressive amount of food consumed by our hungry guests, the Summerfest was no exception. There was something for everyone with grilled veal and cervelat sausages, pork chipolata and vegetarian hot dogs, savoury chicken crepes, and banana and chocolate crepes. An ice cream ‘uncle’, candy floss and popcorn delighted the sweet tooths of all ages.
23 SWISS CLUB JUL - DEC 2022
EVENTS
FRIENDLY BUT FIERCE COMPETITION A highlight of the Summerfest was the first-ever series of Tele-match relay races. Eight brave families competed in a three-legged race, an egg and spoon relay, a gunny sack race, and ‘Dizzy Bat’ – a novel endeavour in which contestants attempt to balance and spin bats on their heads.

Congratulations to the following sporting families: Saurabh, Buehler, Mathiesson, Vezzosi, Grafe, Wilkinson and Hernandez. You are all winners in our eyes. A LITTLE RETAIL THERAPY, TOO A flea market, jointly operated by Members and a few selected external partners, was a great success. A shoutout to Abi Brown, who donated 50% of her stall’s proceeds to a local charity for children with chronic illnesses; and Brigitte Haeuser, whose lovely toys inspired many wide-eyed children to part with their pocket money – or use their persuasive powers on their parents. The stall for Conscious Kids drew many interested enquiries, with several Members signing up their kids to attend a free trial yoga class at the Club. Sincere congratulations to the Summerfest organisers, who did an amazing job, and thanks to all Members and members of the public who joined in the fun. Let us look forward to many more fun-tastic Summerfests to come.
Golden Memories ON 9 AND 26 MAY 2022 AT 6PM, OUR CLUB’S GOLD CARD MEMBERS SET SAIL FROM ONE 15 MARINA CLUB, SENTOSA COVE, FOR A SUNSET CRUISE ABOARD THE EAGLE WINGS LUXURY YACHT. IT WAS PLAIN SAILING AND HEARTY PARTYING ALL NIGHT LONG TILL 11PM. EAT, DRINK, PARTY On both evenings, some 40 Members embarked on a crise to Lazarus Island, also known as Pulau Sakijang Pelepah, an uninhabited island to the south of Singapore. The sunset cruises were an expression of gratitude to our top-spending Gold Card Members for their loyal support throughout the year. After a welcome speech by our General Manager, Aaron, passengers tucked in to a barbecue dinner, washed down with free-flow drinks.
25 SWISS CLUB JUL - DEC 2022
Pretty sunsets, balmy sea breezes, delicious food and chilled beverages – not to mention a sense of rejoicing at the easing of pandemic-related restrictions, made for truly golden memories.
TBA L ve Was in the Air ON SATURDAY 12 FEBRUARY, 18 COUPLES GATHERED BY THE POOL FOR A VALENTINE’S DINNER. SAVOURING THE FOOD AND THE CONVERSATION All the couples in attendance clearly enjoyed the chance to reconnect with their partners without the usual workday and schoolday distractions. The conversation – and the compliments to the chef – flowed as freely as the complimentary bottle of wine each couple enjoyed with their 3-course dinner. Thanks to all the Members who chose the picturesque setting of the Swiss Club to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year. As always, we loved having you.

THANK YOU, TENNIS AFICIONADOS, FOR STAYING ACTIVE ON THE COURTS DESPITE THE RESTRICTIONS AND FRUSTRATIONS OF THE PAST TWO YEARS. THE FIRST HALF OF THIS YEAR HAS BEEN DOMINATED BY REOPENING AND POSITIVE CHANGE, WITH MANY TOURNAMENTS AND SOCIAL EVENTS SCHEDULED IN THE MONTHS AHEAD.
NEW EVENTS AND A NEW ONLINE BOOKING SYSTEM We began the year by adding many new programmes, including two new junior groups on Saturdays, a one-day tournament for our Academy and Pre-academy level players, and two new beginner groups for adults in the morning and evening respectively. In addition, we hosted our first WITS Ladies’ D Team, and resumed our Apero Tennis Socials on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 8.30pm, with a great turnout. We also transitioned to an online booking system for private lessons, to provide easy access to lessons for newcomers.
OUR FIRST JUNIOR TENNIS TOURNAMENT After two years of no tournaments at the Swiss Club, we successfully organised our inaugural Swiss Club Junior Tennis Tournament on 21 May 2022. The first tournament post-pandemic restrictions was very well-received, with more than 25 kids participating and pitting their tennis skills against each other on a sunny Saturday. Congratulations to all of our young players who took part, and a special shoutout to Tiago and Paul who won the Academy level and pre-Academy level respectively.
SPORTS A FRIENDLY REMINDER Please note that the last day of our junior programme is 25 June and the new term begins 15 August. Remember to check out available lesson slots and book your lessons at fortyfifteen.net.
LOOKING AHEAD We are now gearing up for our summer junior camp, preparing our players for the Junior Team Tennis League in September, and looking forward to once again hosting Adult Tournaments after a 2-year break. Rest assured that we are constantly on the lookout for new opportunities for our juniors to compete in tournaments and socials, and hope to continue to expand our group classes and adult social offerings.
Have a smashing summer!

34 SWISS CLUB JUL - DEC 2022
CLASSES FOR ALL AGES AND LEVELS Our swimming programme starts from the age of 6 months and goes all the way up to competitive swimming and adult classes. Water safety and fun are our top priorities for the Babies & Toddlers and Preschool Swimming programmes. We ensure that each class has a fun-based approach to allow children to feel happy, safe and confident while learning new swimming skills. In our Learn to Swim programme, students learn to master all strokes with the correct techniques and build up stamina. Our highly qualified and passionate coaches recognise that each child is unique, and allow them to progress at their own pace. Competitive Swim Training is ideal for swimmers who want to swim faster, sometimes with a view to joining national and international swim races.
Coach Andrii, who was a professional swimmer and junior world record holder, is the lead coach for the Swiss Sharks swim team. We can confidently say that he has the experience and skills to guide the Swiss Sharks swim team to reach their individual and collective goals. AT LAST, COMPETITIONS RESUME Due to the pandemic-related safe management measures and restrictions of the past two years, swimming competitions had to be put on hold. But the wait is finally over. We are thrilled to once again be able to host swimming competitions at the Swiss Club, and also attend swimming competitions at other clubs.
As the safety measures and restrictions ease, we are excited to continue participating in upcoming Neptune League swim races. We also have the aquaDucks’ Junior and Senior Championships coming up, which has already sparked motivation in our swimmers to train harder and beat their own best times. There are exciting times ahead!
SPORTS
This year, we had the honour of hosting the first Neptune League in two years at the Swiss Club. The Swiss Sharks swim team also competed in round 2 of the Neptune League at the Dutch Club and brought home many medals – a testament to their dedication and hard work. Congratulations to all involved.
Speaking of exciting, the Swiss Club Championships will commence on 12 June 2022. Everyone is invited to participate – mums, dads and kids… Who will smash the Swiss Club records this year? AN ENDLESS FLOW OF BENEFITS Get in the swim with aquaDucks at the Swiss Club and enjoy an endless flow of benefits, from water safety to physical and mental fitness, self-discipline, honed learning skills and goal-oriented commitment. Give Your New Fitness Facilities a Workout
SPORTS
SINCE THE SWISS CLUB HAS JUST UNVEILED ITS NEWEST AND BRIGHTEST FITNESS FACILITY, NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO START WORKING ON THOSE FITNESS GOALS YOU MAY HAVE PUT OFF DURING THE WORST OF THE PANDEMIC. YOUR NEW GYM AND STUDIO WILL INSPIRE YOU, WE PROMISE.
36 SWISS CLUB JUL - DEC 2022
OUR ACTIVE ROLE IN SHAPING YOUR GYM Since 2014, Active Fitness has been conducting and creating Personal Training sessions and other fitness classes for the Swiss Club community. We have greatly enjoyed growing with the Club through the years, and we’re superexcited about the new studio. Working closely with your Sports Manager Elvis, we wanted to ensure that your new fitness facility would have amazing equipment and a great atmosphere. To that end, we critically assessed the previous facility and identified missing elements and areas for improvement. Creating an amazing space and feel for members to train in was our utmost priority. If the new space could also allow us to create higher levels of personal training sessions, that would be an amazing cherry on top.
MORE EQUIPMENT, MORE SPACE, MORE RESULTS The addition of the hack squat machine, something most studios do not have, and a half rack with a platform, makes the gym a more fully equipped performance training centre. Training programmes for strength, power and speed are now even more comprehensive with all the added equipment. And now with a more extensive range of cardio equipment as well, the gym can comfortably host more Members at the same time. Now everyone has space to work out in, without needing to wait too long. In addition to the amazing new gym, the cycling and group class fitness studio is a veritable oasis for workouts. It is a major upgrade from our previous venue, the aerobics room, which we will all remember fondly despite its limitations. The feel of the room and the new
equipment really takes the facilities of the Swiss Club to the next level. If you have yet to check out any of the facilities, head over and check them out now. Our friendly trainers will be happy to show you around. See you soon!

Your Yoga Journey to Health and Wellness
SPORTS
MOST EXPERTS AGREE THAT LIFESTYLE AND DIET ARE THE MAIN FACTORS DRIVING THE GROWTH OF DISEASES IN THE MODERN WORLD. WHILE THE WORD ‘CURE’ HAS BECOME MORE ABOUT ‘SURVIVAL’ AND ‘SUSTENANCE’ RATHER THAN A FULL RECOVERY, YOGA CAN TREAT THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE DISEASE AND MAKE A TRUE CURE POSSIBLE. ADDRESSING THE ROOT CAUSES OF DISEASE Besides lifestyle and diet, stress and other psychological phenomena seem to play a key role in widespread illnesses. Age ranges for the onset of diseases are also dropping, so that people are getting sick in the prime of their life. Through yoga, emotional imbalances are reduced by the sublimation of emotions, thus eradicating the root causes of disease. Advanced yogic techniques can even harness energy to facilitate the healing of dreaded diseases like cancer. PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL CONNECTION Yoga is multi-dimensional and works on the physical, mental and emotional levels. Since the very word ‘yoga’ means ‘to join’, so it follows that yoga helps you connect to each of these levels and attain the highest level of perfection and balance.
38 SWISS CLUB JUL - DEC 2022
Far more than a set of physical, breathing or meditative practices, yoga is a lifestyle that allows you to live without any conflict, in a state of harmony with yourself and with others around you. It offers total freedom, total power, total knowledge, and total bliss!

TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE NEED FOR SUSTAINABILITY IN DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION, THE SWISS EMBASSY HAS TEAMED UP WITH PARTNERS FROM DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES TO PRESENT THE +PAVILION EXHIBITION, NOW OPEN TO THE PUBLIC UNTIL 26 JULY AT MARINA BARRAGE.
WHY BUILD DIFFERENT? As cities continue to emerge and expand, the world is at a tipping point. The current ways of production and consumption are putting an unsustainable strain on the natural resources, temperature and biodiversity of this planet. In construction, buildings account for nearly 40% of all energy-related CO 2 emissions.
The +Pavilion exhibition seeks to unpack what a sustainable built environment entails, and how thoughtful design can ensure that buildings serve their communities’ needs while building a better and greener future. THE GENESIS In May 2021, Haring Timber Technology was invited by the organisers of
Archifest21 to speak on sustainable and innovative wood construction and applications. Believing that this topic deserved to be expanded into a larger discourse on sustainable construction, they quickly assembled a team of like-minded partners, including Deloitte Center for the Edge, Affordable Abodes, Studio SKLIM, and the Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore. +Pavilion kicked off with a well-received workshop on innovative sustainable design solutions in conjunction with Archifest21. Over the next half a year, new partners Vitra, Nespresso and UBS came on board. This coalition of partners – large and small, private and non-profit – then put their minds and hands together to take +Pavilion to the next level. The sum of their efforts is what you will see at Marina Barrage: the first big event, post-pandemic, to be graciously hosted by PUB Singapore.
VISIT THE +PAVILION EXHIBITION +Pavilion offers information, recreation and stimulation for the whole family. Little ones can play with elephant swing furniture made of recycled plastic and rattan and explore the enchanted forest made of cork, while adults can enjoy an experiential walk through the +Pavilion structure itself. Visitors can sit on and interact with furniture made from natural and recycled materials, and get hands-on with the earth-friendly and sustainable materials used to construct the +Pavilion structure, including glue-laminated timber, biocomposite made from the Kenaf plant, and boards made of recycled coffee.

ON 2 MAY 1967, THE SWISS SCHOOL IN SINGAPORE OPENED ITS DOORS WITH 18 STUDENTS. THE FIRST CLASSES WERE HELD AT THE SWISS CLUB WHILE THE NEW SCHOOL WAS BEING BUILT.
FOUNDED ON PARTNERSHIP, BUILT ON GOODWILL The school was founded in 1967 to cater to the growing number of Swiss companies who were transferring married Swiss specialists with families to Singapore. Originally open primarily to Swiss students, the school has since become an international meeting place where many nationalities, languages and cultures converge and enrich each other.
42 SWISS CLUB JUL - DEC 2022
Not only was the school founded on Swiss Club land, but its founding fathers were also important members of the Swiss Club. The school, together with
the Swiss Club, soon became the hub of the Swiss community in Singapore. To this day, the school continues to enjoy the support of the Club, the Embassy and all the pillars of the Swiss community. The founding of the school was made possible by the generous support of numerous Swiss companies, along with the ongoing patronage of the Canton of Zug. We continue to benefit from the extraordinarily generous educational and material support of this canton.

We look forward to sharing the next 55 years with you in the green heart of Singapore!
The lifelong bond that former students and teachers share with the Swiss School is particularly heartwarming. A familiar place in a foreign land, the school is fondly remembered as a second home by its former students.
Introduced in 2019, our French Stream works in close collaboration with our partner canton, Valais, and uses differentiated, cooperative and student-based forms of learning to create joyful educational experiences.

Meet a Staffer
THE SWISS CLUB’S CHEF DE CUISINE NG CHING HAW CHERISHES THE FRIENDSHIPS FORGED WITH HIS COLLEAGUES AT WORK. WHEN HE RECEIVES COMPLIMENTS FROM DINERS, HE NEVER FAILS TO CREDIT HIS SUPPORTIVE TEAM.
FAMILY MAN AND TEAM PLAYER Married to Wen Chin and dad to 4-year-old Mia, 29-year-old Ching Haw carries a lot of responsibilities on his young shoulders. He oversees all Pergola and banquet operations, and is entrusted with exercising quality control over every dish that leaves the kitchen. Ching Haw left an upscale restaurant on Clarke Quay to join the Swiss Club in 2019, just before the world felt the full brunt of COVID-19. Working closely with the Club’s management, he has steered his team through turbulent times, responding with agility and efficiency to the frequently changing restrictions.
“
I would like to thank all Members for your valuable support. These challenging times would not be nearly as manageable without your gracious support. Ching Haw
INTERESTS
Ever humble and clearly a team player, Ching Haw credits not only his colleagues with the successful navigation of the fluid situation of recent years, but also his customers – Swiss Club Members. “I would like to thank all Members for your valuable support. These challenging times would not be nearly as manageable without your gracious support,” said Ching Haw. When Ching Haw is not at the Club, he enjoys quality time and travel with this family. They frequently travel to Malaysia, his original homeland, to visit relatives and friends.
46 SWISS CLUB JUL - DEC 2022
THE CHEF RECOMMENDS… Ching Haw hesitates to single out a dish or two, given that restaurants’ menus span everything from local favourites to traditional Swiss delicacies and seasonal specials. However, when pressed for a recommendation, he went with the popular favourites and volunteered the top-selling ravioli and cheese fondue. Now that capacity limits have been lifted, we can’t wait to see what magic Ching Haw and his friends will perform for the discerning diners of the Swiss Club.
