A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

INSIDE THIS ISSUE SWISS CLUB

Dear Members, As we approach the end of the first quarter of 2021, I can hardly believe that we have been living with COVID-19 for more than a year. I salute our vigilant Government for its swift and efficient actions in curbing the spread of the virus, and your wonderful Club for managing the situation with such incredible grace under pressure. It’s fair to say that life at the Club, and in Singapore for that matter, feels almost ‘normal’ now. Or could it be that we have gradually adapted to the ‘new normal’ without even realising it? I must say that I am impressed by the human race. This ordeal has shown us just how adaptable we can be, when need be. Personally, I can’t wait for Easter. Though it’s technically a Christian festival with pagan roots, the whole world has embraced it. I hope you will join your fellow Members at the Club and celebrate – the resurrection of Christ, the coming of spring in the northern hemisphere, or whatever special significance your family attaches to it. Speaking of celebrations, I greatly look forward to the official unveiling of that grand old dame, the Clubhouse. There is so much to celebrate! Enjoy this issue of ‘Relax’, and enjoy everything your Club has to offer. Yours,

A WORD FROM THE

COMMITTEE

As of January 2021, the Club has a total of 1,264 active Members, an increase of 118 Members from the previous year. A very warm welcome to all our new Members!

Happy Birthday, Swiss Club! One of the oldest and most historic Clubs in Singapore turns 150 this year. It is a remarkable milestone that we look forward to aptly celebrating with the opening of the renovated Clubhouse. Since its evolution from the Swiss Rifle Shooting Club in 1871, the Club has been the spirited centre of social life for not only the Swiss community, but all nationalities. It is a given that, for any organisation, strength lies in numbers. For the Swiss Club to not only survive, but thrive, we require a healthy membership count. Since the Club reopened during Phase Two of the Government’s Safe Management Measures in June last year, we have seen a progressive increase in these numbers. A major contributor was the very successful Swiss National Day 2020 Membership Drive in August, which ran till 15 September and saw a total of 127 new Members registered. Due to popular demand, the Club has also since reinstated the 1-Year Term Membership. As of January 2021, the Club has a total of 1,264 active Members, an increase of 118 Members from the previous year. A very warm welcome to all our new Members! Noteworthy is the new events calendar on the Club website, which has been created to announce upcoming events. Just click on the date of each event for more information. However, as the planned events could be subject to postponement or cancellation, look out for the updates that are regularly posted in the weekly newsletter and on the website.

6

With the new Clubhouse slated to become a bricks-andmortar reality very soon, we hope you are as excited as we are at the prospect of its opening. Yes, we have managed to overcome all the difficulties that the past year brought with it, and trust that you will be overjoyed with your pristine new Clubhouse. With the Clubhouse opening, Club events and activities planned and F&B outlets operating, it is almost business as usual – or what is now often referred to as the ‘new normal’. The only difference is that the maximum capacity for events remains subject to changing Government advisories. As you are probably aware, we have postponed the official 150th anniversary celebration to 2022. However, do look forward to smaller celebratory ‘Members only’ events during the rest of this year, with the premier one coming up soon – the official opening of the immaculately restored Clubhouse.

HEALTH AND SAFETY NEWS

Thumbs Up – and Keep Your Guard Up!

T

o all Members who attended festive events at the Club – a big thank you for complying with safe distancing measures. Since no breaches were found, you deserve a double thumbs-up for your efforts.

HOWEVER… Despite the stellar behaviour we saw at events, we are still seeing instances of Members not complying with safe distancing measures. For example, 20 Members were found mingling at the tennis court area, Members have been seen ‘table hopping’ at Jungle Cove, and others have been spotted walking around the Club with no masks on. A gentle but firm reminder: Please do behave at the Club as you would in public. Only remove your mask when seated in the restaurant, exercising or swimming. While sitting at the poolside with a drink, please put your mask back on between sips.

MUTUAL RESPECT Since many of the challenges of last year look set to continue throughout 2021, we want to keep the Club safe for all to enjoy. You would have noticed that all of our staff are wearing masks at all times. Out of mutual respect for the people who serve you and for your fellow Members, we hope that you will reciprocate. Rest assured that we will inform when and if safe distancing measures are relaxed, hopefully sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, keep safe and remain vigilant! A MESSAGE FROM THE

GENERAL MANAGER

As per tradition, we have a range of wonderful sports camps lined up for the Easter holidays. As it has often been said, everything you need to know about life can be learned from sports.

Dear Members, I hope you have had a fantastic start to 2021! After more than a year of living with COVID-19, I daresay that you have read extensively (if not excessively) about the negative impact of the pandemic around the world, in almost all areas of life. Hence I have decided that my message in this issue of ‘Relax’ will focus instead on positive news. Let me begin by highlighting the host of new social developments that have been implemented at the Club. They include the regular monthly treks undertaken by our small but intrepid new trekking group, our convivial Apero Tennis evenings, our innovative ‘tennis partner matchmaking’ initiative, and our new basketball offerings from SoMa. Our mind-bending Quiz Nights continue to draw a loyal following. Our hard-working staff have been toiling behind the scenes to bring you and your kids an array of exciting new activities. For the kids, we have an ongoing calendar of creative art and cooking workshops. For the grownups, we are pleased to now offer Vinyasa yoga, swimming coaching for adults, and one of my personal favourites – the new Gentlemen’s Cooking Club. As per tradition, we have a range of wonderful sports camps lined up for the Easter holidays. Register your kids in their choice of Tennis, Swimming, Soccer and Basketball Camps. As it has often been said, everything you need to know about life can be learned from sports.

8

In keeping with the multiculturalism of the Club, I am delighted that we will be celebrating (almost) all of the world’s National Day celebrations. Do join us on 17 March for St Patrick’s Day, and on 23 April for St George’s Day! Our annual White Asparagus Festival returns this year to delight the gourmands and asparagus aficionados among us. If you have never tried these delicate little spears, now’s your chance. They are exquisite, and all the more prized for their brief and fleeting seasonal appearance. I look forward to seeing you at our Easter Champagne Brunch, and at many of our new social and sporting events. Happy Easter and Happy ‘Every Day’!

Yours cheerfully,

A. Lim

This pale yellow, delightfully floral and fruity wine is smooth and light on the palate, with a luscious finish reminiscent of quince jam. It goes wonderfully well with delicately flavoured seafood and all kinds of delicious desserts.

This very opaque, dark ruby-red wine boasts an intense aroma of blackberries with toasted nuances of roasted coffee and a note of licorice on the finish. Warm, juicy and flavourful, it pairs brilliantly with aged cheeses, poultry and char-grilled meats.

This delicious ripe and zesty Sauvignon Blanc is an aromatic salsa-like fusion of ripe summer fruit and fragrant Asian spices with a lemony, citrus thread that finishes crisp and dry. It pairs well with cheese, delicate fish and fresh herb-based dishes.

This soft and elegant Pinot Noir has abundant depth and interest, with fine tannins, a lovely burgundy hue and a warm, inviting nose of strawberry and raspberry with a touch of oak. It complements fatty fish, char-grilled meats, casseroles and stews.

Let’s Get Competitive! A

fter a very rainy start to the year, and amid the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 situation, it's time to play some competitive tennis.

FLYING THE SWISS CLUB FLAG ISLAND-WIDE Right now, Swiss Club teams are doing battle on courts all over Singapore. Remember to show your support by cheering them on when they are playing at home – while respecting social distancing measures, of course. Around 10 teams are engaged in different leagues. Women’s, men’s and junior teams accommodate players of all genders and ages. It confirms the popularity of tennis at the Swiss Club and attests to the dedication of our players.

NEW ‘SMASH HIT’ EVENTS I’m pleased to report that our very first Apero Tennis Social was a blast. Do join us every Thursday night for a fun time! Well done to the ladies who worked very hard on their fitness and their tennis skills at our new cardio training session. Come join us every Friday morning for a great workout. COMING SOON In May and June we will be organising an Adults’ Singles Championship and Junior Tournament. In addition, Tennis Camps will be held during the Easter holidays. Look out for dates and registration details on the Swiss Club website and in the Club’s e-newsletter.

HOT TIP FOR WARMING UP Our new and already popular coach Ashgarvin shares this handy tip for your tennis warm-up. It helps players to slow down their swing and get a better 'feel' for the ball. To begin, both players should stand either side of the net, facing each other and 3 feet behind the service line. Then using a top spin on both forehands, try to keep the ball ‘live’ for as long as possible (backhand players will simply rally back and forth). To improve consistency, try to hit the ball at waist height and land the shots halfway between the net and your partner. Before retreating to the baseline, players can progress with the same activity using 3/4 depth, and aim to get the ball to land on the service line. After this, you're all set to play from the baseline. Article and photos courtesy of Pierre Capdeville, Swiss Club Tennis Director

Fitness Training for Tennis

ctive Fitness has been helping many people improve their performance in specific competitive sports over the years. With tennis being one of the hottest sports at the Club, we encounter a lot of clients who want to improve their tennis game.

IMPROVING FITNESS, ENHANCING PERFORMANCE Over the years we have created multiple workout programmes, exercises and nutritional plans to help support people in improving their tennis game. Different players seek help in different areas. Some come to get overall fitter and faster, while others specifically aim to get stronger, more flexible, and so on. So, how can working with a trainer in the gym help improve your tennis game? As with any competitive sport, having a professional to design, guide, support and improve your workouts allows you to constantly improve and grow. Fitness is complex. It is the sum total of many variables and elements. So it follows that incremental improvements in any of them will contribute to an overall improvement in fitness and consequently performance.

SPECIFIC GOALS, PURPOSE-DESIGNED PROGRAMMES At Active Fitness, we have created a variety of specially tailored fitness programmes to increase speed and reaction timing, improve hand-eye coordination, and increase strength output while increasing flexibility. If you're looking to make 2021 your year to seriously improve your game, we're here to help make that a reality for you. So look us up – and lift your game! KEEN TO FOCUS ON YOUR FITNESS? WHY CHOOSE BASKETBALL? We touched on what SoMa is about in previous issues of ‘Relax’. Now let us debunk on some myths about the sport we love. Basketball is a complicated game. It’s a game of simple rules, which everybody can ‘get’ after a few sessions. Basketball is too physical. There’s a risk of injury no matter what sport you choose. Even the little ones can try their hand at it – our youngest participant is 5 years old! Basketball is all about shooting the basket. We believe strongly that defence wins games. Basketball requires a wide range of skills, which allows opportunities for continuous improvement regardless of age and skill level.

Basketball is tough to master. For kids who have a lot of energy, the sport is a great way to combine a range of physical skills with creativity and the pursuit of excellence. Basketball is for girls. Having coached high school basketball for the past two decades, Coach Joe has ensured that every institution forms a girls’ team whenever resources permit. Since the start of our partnership with the Swiss Club, 25% of participants in our regular season and holiday camps have been girls! his holidays travelling to far-flung places. “I am an adventure junkie, having been to unchartered territories that are not recognised by the United Nations – including DPRK and Nagorno-Karabakh,” shared Elvis.

AN ATHLETE AND AN ADVENTURER Fortunately, Elvis joined the Swiss Club in February of 2020, just before the full impact of COVID-19 made itself felt. He is currently 25 and single but not available – he is engaged to be married to Cherie, an auditor, at the end of this year. Not surprisingly, Elvis is an avid and accomplished athlete who played badminton for Singapore and soccer for his university. While completing his degree in Sports Management in Scotland, he spent

LOVES HIS WORK Elvis loves many aspects of working at the Club, including the lush greenery and the healthy dining choices on the menu. He personally recommends the Caesar Chicken Wrap. He also deeply appreciates the support and understanding of Members, who have of late not always been able to use the courts without advance bookings. Upon explaining that there had been a surge in demand since COVID-19 eliminated the possibility of

travel for leisure, Elvis found that Members were understanding and cooperative. “I was very touched as I could feel the support of my Members. As we always say, we are a home away from home and these experiences gave me a very homely feeling,” recalled Elvis. THANK YOU, MEMBERS In closing, Elvis had this message for Members: “I would like to thank Members for their support and encouragement during the past year. It was a very turbulent year, with ever-changing guidelines that required everyone to adapt to uncomfortable changes. Your kind words have been one of the biggest motivating factors!”

Easter Bites for

2021

Feast on these bite-sized morsels of information about Easter!

1

Easter celebrates the Christian belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, three days after his execution and death on the cross. Today, it has become a symbol of hope throughout the Christian world.

2

In Switzerland, it is not the Easter Bunny but the Easter Cuckoo who traditionally delivers Easter eggs!

3

According to Christian belief, Easter eggs were originally dyed red to remind us of the blood that Jesus Christ shed when he died on the cross.

28

4

The Easter Bunny is thought to have been invented in Germany during the Middle Ages. He was an egg-laying hare called ‘Osterhase’.

5

Scholars believe that Easter was named after the Anglo-Saxon goddess, ‘Eastre’ or ‘Eostre’, whose symbols were the egg and the hare (which evolved into the Easter Bunny).

I N T E R E S T

6

Long ago in Germany, the Easter Fox or ‘Osterfuchs’ brought the Easter eggs before the Easter Bunny took over his job.

7 8 9

Easter is the secondhighest candy-buying holiday in the world, after Halloween.

Lent is a period of 40 days before Easter, during which Christians are supposed to give up something they love, such as eating meat.

Hot cross buns can be traced back to pagan times when the crosses represented the four seasons and the four phases of the moon. When Christianity became widespread, they acquired the symbolism of the cross on which Jesus Christ died.

10

Pretzels are tied up with Easter. Legend has it that they were invented by an Italian monk in 610 A.D. to reward young children for learning their prayers, which is why they resemble the crossed arms of praying children. Since they were made of simple flour and water, they were also widely eaten during Lent, when certain foods were forbidden.

11

In Sweden, children dress up as witches on Maundy Thursday (the day before Good Friday), or Skärtorsdagen. They go door to door wishing people ‘Happy Easter’ in exchange for candy.

12

In parts of Europe including Germany and Scandinavia, people light bonfires called Easter Fires or ‘Osterfeuer’ over the Easter weekend. The practice hails from the Saxons, who believed that the fires helped to chase away winter and bring spring.

13

On Easter Monday in Poland, boys try to soak people with buckets of water. This tradition has been traced back to the baptism of Polish Prince Mieszko on Easter Monday in 996.

14

On the morning of Holy Saturday in Greece, people throw clay pots out of windows and plant seeds in new ones to mark the beginning of spring.

29

I N T E R E S T

15

Christians believe that Jesus Christ took the Last Supper with his 12 Apostles on Maundy Thursday, the day before he was crucified on Good Friday. They ate unleavened bread and wine, which came to represent the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist or Holy Communion that Christians celebrate at mass.

16

In Australia, the chocolate Easter Bilby is an increasingly popular alternative to the chocolate Easter Bunny. While the rabbit is regarded as a pest in the wild, wiping out native flora, attacking crops and eroding the soil, the bilby plays an important role in keeping the ecosystem in balance by digging deep burrows that double as compost pits for decomposing plants and germinating seeds.

17

A series of 50 Imperial Easter eggs was created for the Russian Imperial family from 1885 to 1916 by the jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé. ‘Fabergé eggs’ are some of the most admired and copied objets d’art in the world.

18

Almost 400 years ago, in 1634, the villagers of Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany, pledged to perform a passion play re-enacting the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ once every 10 years, if God were to spare them from the Bubonic Plague. In 2020, it had to be postponed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

19

The male actors in the Oberammergau Passion Play have promised to grow their hair and beards from Ash Wednesday in 2021 until the next performance in 2022, so that they will look authentically hairy.

20

Every year on Easter Monday, the townspeople of the Southern French town of Haux crack more than 4,500 eggs to make a giant omelette that feeds more than 1,000 people. The tradition dates back to when Napoleon and his army were travelling through the South of France.

30

21

The Easter bonnet can be traced back to a European tradition when people would wear new clothes and hats to celebrate the coming of spring and Easter. It was popularised by the Irving Berlin song ‘Easter Parade’, released in 1933 and performed by Fred Astaire in the 1948 musical of the same name. In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it, You’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter Parade. I’ll be all in clover and when they look you over, I’ll be the proudest fellow in the Easter Parade. On the avenue, Fifth Avenue, the photographers will snap us, And you’ll find that you’re in the rotogravure. Oh, I could write a sonnet about your Easter bonnet, And of the girl I’m taking to the Easter Parade.

Help the bunnies find the Easter eggs. Using a pen or pencil, trace the burrow that leads to the stash of eggs.
