A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
INSIDE THIS ISSUE SWISS CLUB
Dear Members, You would have noticed that the title of this magazine has changed from ‘Relax’ to ‘Swiss Club’. I applaud the change. Your Club’s name speaks for itself, after all. Along with the change of name comes a change of frequency. From now on, ‘Swiss Club’ will be a bi-annual publication that will serve as a memento of your happy times at the Club. With Swiss National Day and Singapore National Day falling within days of each other, August is a great month for celebrating. Let’s drink to two mighty little nations and gratefully acknowledge our good fortune in having ties to both. On that note, do check out the amazing artisanal gins of our new partner merchant, Singapore Distillery. (Coconut Pandan Gin sounds like the perfect tropical tipple.) If you’re craving something decidedly Swiss, visit swissmade.direct, a climate-neutral company that sells genuine Swiss-made products to the world, and another new partner merchant of the Swiss Club. And if you have an unquenchable thirst to learn more about this dynamic part of the world we’re in, tune in to the fascinating original digital content of Asia Society, a non-profit organisation that has forged a new partnership with the Swiss Club. I greatly look forward to experiencing the Clubhouse in all of its post-renovation splendour, emerging from the shadow of the ongoing pandemic, and continuing to be a part of the beautiful, historical, inimitable Swiss Club. Thank you for the privilege. Yours,

A WORD FROM THE
COMMITTEE Dear Members, Dear Friends,
“
On 1 August Switzerland celebrates its National Day of 730 years whilst on 9 August Singapore celebrates its 56 years of independence. I wish both nations a Happy National Day with continuous peace and prosperity.
At the time of writing these lines the renovation of the Clubhouse is nearing its end and we are awaiting the final TOP approval by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA). By the time you read these lines, you will hopefully have experienced the refurbished Clubouse in its full splendor. Thank you for your patience and for putting up with the many inconveniences while the swimming pool, the Jungle Cove and the Clubhouse were undergoing a much needed facelift. The renovated Cluhouse is a fitting gift for the Club’s 150th anniversary this year. I hope you enjoy the Pergola with its show-kitchen, the refurbished Rifle Lounge, the Arbenz fine-dining restaurant with its new veranda, and the new co-working space and coffee lounge for Members. Please bear with us during the first couple of months while we experiment with the use of the various areas to gauge Members’ preferences whilst also having to take regulatory building and usage restrictions into account. The Jungle Cove, for example, will have to convert to a self-ordering and self-serving zone due to imposed building restrictions by the authorities. I am, however, confident we will be able to offer all Members a refreshing and unique Club and dining experience in our refurbished restaurants with new and frequently changing menu items. The current pandemic-related restrictions on the number of diners at one table, the number of participants at events, and the possibility of even holding an event, make planning of celebratory events for the Club’s 150th anniversary almost impossible. At this point in time there is a chance that this uncertainty may stretch well into 2022. We are therefore focusing on smaller, more targeted events. Announcements of such events may also be at shorter notice when it becomes possible to gauge what is permitted and what is not. Hence, we appreciate your understanding and support. It is certainly not what we had in mind two years ago, nor how we wanted to celebrate the Club’s venerable anniversary. It is also the second year that we are unable to hold big events such as the Swiss National Day and the Oktoberfest. Slowly the somber possibility that we
may never be able to hold such big events anymore, in the same format with the same huge crowd, sinks in. This will inevitably create a big hole in the Club’s finances. In fact, the second regulatory closure of our dine-in facilities as well as the inability to organise larger events has already caused deep red numbers in the Club’s finances. We will therefore have to overhaul the Club’s business model, find new revenue sources and trim costs wherever possible without infringing on Members’ Club experience. One of such cost factors is this magazine. Social media has more and more taken center stage and has made a printed and online magazine redundant. The recent Members’ survey revealed that only very few Members still read and treasure a printed magazine. The committee has therefore decided to reduce the current bi-monthly printed magazine to a bi-annual publication with a June and December edition. The two editions will primarily focus on past Club events and will be a useful tool to showcase the Club to potential new members. Club and event promotions will henceforth be communicated via social media and a newly created Swiss Club WhatsApp channel to which you can subscribe. The current magazine will therefore be the last edition until the next one in December 2021. It is a decision we have not taken lightly, but we trust you appreciate that changing times and Members’ preferences also require an occasional adaption of past traditions. On 1 August Switzerland celebrates its National Day of 730 years whilst on 9 August Singapore celebrates its 56 years of independence. I wish both nations a Happy National Day with continuous peace and prosperity. A big Thank You – also on behalf of my committee colleagues – goes to you, our Members, for your unwavering support over the last couple of years. We certainly look forward to seeing you at the Club even more often, enjoying our new facilities.

A MESSAGE FROM THE
GENERAL MANAGER
“
At last, the wait is over. The tables are set, the glassware is polished, and the champagne is chilling. The Clubhouse is finally ready to open after almost two years.
Dear Members, At last, the wait is over. The tables are set, the glassware is polished, and the champagne is chilling. The Clubhouse is finally ready to open after almost two years. Obviously, the pandemic threw a massive spanner in the works. Kudos to our architects, Zarch Collaboratives, for working around the challenges. I think you’ll agree, the finished product meets all expectations. It has managed to retain everything we love about the original Clubhouse while injecting a new vibrancy and a great deal more functionality. Ever-changing regulations permitting, do come and christen your new Clubhouse and enjoy everything it has to offer. I personally love the newly created veranda adjoining Arbenz – it is the perfect spot for a pre-dinner aperitif or a nightcap. Needless to say, should we fall short in any way during the first few weeks of resuming Clubhouse operations, please forgive us. It is early days, and no doubt we will encounter some teething problems. Hopefully, they will be minor and short-lived. On the downside, due to Singapore’s current Phase 3 (Heightened Alert) status, we are unable to host an official opening for our newly renovated Clubhouse. We sincerely apologise for the lack of festivities that would otherwise have occurred, especially in view of the fact that this year also marks our 150th Anniversary. Please consider it a raincheck, not a cancellation. On a related note, I regret that the Club will be unable to hold our two major annual events this year – the Swiss National Day celebration, and Oktoberfest. These two events are traditionally open to the public, and
very lucrative streams of revenue as well as amazing experiences that put our name on the ‘party map’ of Singapore and indeed all of Southeast Asia. Given the need to scrutinise our expenditure, we have decided to convert the Club’s bi-monthly magazine to a bi-annual one. This issue is in fact the first of the new generation. To stop the gap in the frequency of our communications, we will be relying more heavily on our digital and social media platforms. Stay tuned for the launch of our exciting new Telegram and WhatsApp accounts, both of which can be accessed on desktop and mobile devices. Finally, I wish to ask all of you to continue to uphold the spirit of cooperation that has seen the Club remain open throughout almost all of the pandemic. Your compliance with safe distancing, group gathering limitations and mask-wearing is much appreciated. It is likely that we will be subject to ongoing spot checks by the authorities. I thank you in advance for your vigilance. Happy Swiss National Day! Happy Singapore National Day! And here's to many happy, healthy days ahead!
Yours sincerely,
A. Lim Aaron Lim General Manager

Worth the Wait… A
Your New Clubhouse
t last, the newly renovated Clubhouse is set to open its doors and welcome Members. The architects behind the renovation, Zarch Collaboratives Pte Ltd, shared some insights into the thinking behind the design.
BEFORE
A NEW FAÇADE AND BACKDROP FOR THE POOL
The premise of the Clubhouse design stemmed from the peculiarity of the site being a building with no distinct ‘back of house'. Now Pergola sports a stunning new façade, which draws the eye upwards to encompass a view of the new veranda, al fresco seating area and expanded kitchen adjoining Arbenz.
10
BEFORE
MERGER OF OLD AND NEW
In addition, the toilet layout was extensively remodelled in compliance with new Building and Construction Authority (BCA) code standards, accommodating more cubicles and a nursing room.
BEFORE
An overarching objective that shaped the renovation was the seamless merging of the heritage-rich 90-year-old Clubhouse with the 30-year-old Arbenz and the new architecture. The design of the new took subtle hints from the old, including the rhythm of the aluminium feature that artfully screens off part of the kitchen while allowing daylight into the workspace. It also referenced the rhythm of fenestrations from the 90-year-old Clubhouse. Paying homage to the previous Pergola timber structure, the new design features a unique method of imprinting timber onto off-form concrete. Materials congruent with Swiss landscapes such as gabion walls (stacked stones encaged in wire framework) and tiered planting were also used to enhance the surrounding terrain.
11
FEATURE WALLS AS FOCAL POINTS
To refresh our two anchor restaurants, Zarch Collaboratives created a new wine feature wall in Arbenz and a new bar in the Rifle Lounge. In Arbenz, the roof pitch accommodates a spectacular light box of empty wine bottles, which had been painstakingly collected by staff after being emptied and enjoyed by Members. The result is a bespoke installation art piece that artfully conceals the exhaust and mechanical and electrical ducts.
A talking point on the Pergola veranda is the Swiss flag-inspired framework. Clusters of four thin 75x75mm columns subtly reference the Swiss Cross without obstructing the flow of natural light. CHRISTEN YOUR NEW CLUBHOUSE
Why not plan to host your Swiss and Singapore National Day celebrations, or your next gathering of family and friends, at Arbenz and Pergola? Look out in the Club’s e-newsletters for updates on official opening dates and changes to opening hours in view of the fluid COVID-19 situation. HEALTH AND SAFETY NEWS
Safety: A Constant Priority Amid Changing Conditions
T
he Multi Ministry Taskforce has announced the second part of Phase 3 (Heightened Alert). We are essentially reverting back to Phase 2 of last year, with the exception of dining in, which is restricted to two people dining together. Social gatherings remain limited to five people.
DETAILS ON DINING IN For dining in, a family can dine in together but must be split into groups of two per table. However, a group of four or five friends will not be able to split into groups of two and dine together. While we understand that this may be frustrating for some, we seek your understanding and compliance with this set of mandatory measures. On behalf of the management and staff of the Swiss Club, I hope that everyone stays safe and continues to keep up the good work that we have seen throughout this challenging and ever-changing period.

On Saturday 17 April, the Mural Painting Event was held in conjunction with The Mindful Camp team as a complimentary family event for our community of past campers and their families. The painting project was completed over two sessions on the Multi-purpose Sports Hall wall, and the exuberant artwork was gifted to the Club as a gesture of goodwill from our partners to commemorate our 150th Anniversary.

Tamborini, ‘Runchet’ Rosso Merlot del Ticino DOC 2016 Origin: Switzerland
$65 per bottle $14 per 150ml glass
$65 per bottle $14 per 150ml glass
This Fendant (100% Chasselas) from the canton of Valais displays aromas of white flowers on the nose, with notes of honey and white peach, complemented by beeswax and an exotic note of tangerine in the background. Dry and refreshing, it is a great aperitif wine that pairs well with charcuterie and cheese, white fish and shellfish.
This juicy, fruity Merlot from Ticino seduces with its aromas of plums, black cherries, blackberries and hints of sweet spice, balanced by oak notes and velvety tannins. With its elegant structure and long finish, it pairs well with cold cuts and cheeses, and lighter vegetable and meat dishes across both western and Asian cuisines.

THINGS YOU PROBABLY NEVER KNEW ABOUT GIN
The global ‘ginaissance’ may have plateaued, but it has converted many of us into dedicated drinkers of that quintessentially British drink, the gin and tonic (G&T). But is it truly British? Here are some little known facts that may surprise you.
1
GIN WAS NOT INVENTED BY THE BRITS.
2 3
4
It actually originated in Holland. The British ‘discovered’ gin during the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century, when they saw Dutch soldiers drinking ‘genever’ to boost their morale before heading into battle. Hence the term ‘Dutch courage’.
GIN IS THE MOST MIXED SPIRIT.
Gin forms the basis of more cocktails than any other spirit. Think the Martini, the Negroni, the Gimlet...
THERE’S GIN IN SINGAPORE’S ‘NATIONAL DRINK’.
The iconic Singapore Sling was created by Mr Ngiam Tong Boon at Raffles Hotel in the early 20th Century. The famous cocktail has even inspired a gin of its own. Singapore Distillery’s Singapore Sling Gin is distilled with all the ingredients of the gin-and-juice-based tipple, including pineapples, oranges, angelica and cherries.
GIN WAS FIRST ADDED TO TONIC WATER TO STAVE OFF MALARIA.
The French Foreign Legion in North Africa drank tonic water for its quinine, to protect them against malaria. They added gin to mask the bitterness and voilà – the G&T. The Brits did much the same in India.
5
SAILORS DRANK GIN FOR MEDICINAL PURPOSES.
6
THE NUMBER ONE GIN DRINKING NATION IS…
The Philippines accounts for well over 40% of the global gin market. The vast majority of gin drunk by Filipinos is the locally made Ginebra San Miguel.
THE THING THAT MAKES GIN ‘GIN’ IS JUNIPER.
According to EU law, gin must predominantly contain juniper to be called gin. But other than juniper, gin can be infused with almost anything. For example, inspired by the local pink drink known as bandung, Singapore Distillery’s Stolen Roses gin is distilled with fresh rose petals.
LONDON DRY GIN ISN’T NECESSARILY MADE IN LONDON.
The expression refers to gins that are made in a single distillation, where all the botanicals are added in one go. It’s challenging to make, as you have to get the balance right before you even taste it. Singapore Distillery’s Merlion Gin, Lime Garden Gin, Coconut Pandan Gin, Kyuri Gin and Orange Grove Gin are all examples of painstakingly made London Dry Gins.

18
Gin was dispensed to the British Royal Navy with lime cordial to prevent scurvy. (Hence the slang term ‘limeys’ for British sailors.) Clearly, the taste caught on. Singapore Distillery’s stunning Lime Garden Gin is distilled with three local limes, Limau Nipis, Limau Kalamansi, and Limau Purut.

… And The Teams Played On T
hough COVID-19 has certainly put obstacles in our way, we have nonetheless managed to enjoy some great moments on court.
A GOOD FINISH As May marked the end of all team leagues, I would like sincerely thank all players for their participation and dedication in representing the Swiss Club. A big bravo to our Ladies WITS C team, led by Captain Thayna, for finishing in second place. This is a great result! Our A team have also been putting in a lot of effort in improving their game. However, unfortunately the results did not reflect their hard work. Keep up the good work – better days will come. Our STA men’s team, led by Captain Naveen, also battled hard across Singapore. They almost (but not quite) made it to the semifinal. Bad luck, guys – next season you will make it, for sure. THREE CHEERS FOR THE CHAMPIONS And saving the best till last, the STA women’s team, led by Captain Corinna, won the B League! In particular, congratulations to Corinna, Gabriela, Anette, Carola, Hiroko, Roberta, Victoria, Alexia, Tracy, Nathalie, Marika and Malou.
BRAKES ON REGULAR TOURNAMENTS Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we have been unable to play our regular Swiss Club tournaments. Hopefully that will change soon. I hope you find ways to work on your fitness at home, or surrounded by nature. Stay safe. Article and photos courtesy of Pierre Capdeville, Swiss Club Tennis Director

Wine Masterclass: Swiss Wine & Women in Wine
I
n a wine masterclass organised together with EHL Campus (Singapore) and Robert Parker Wine Advocate, wine lovers learned about organic wines made in sustainable and biodynamic vineyards by Swiss women winemakers.
VIRTUAL ENCOUNTERS OF THE WINE KIND The participants met trailblazing winemakers Marie-Thérèse Chappaz, Laura Paccot and Anne-Claire Schott, who were live-streamed from the EHL Campus in Lausanne and their homes into the class at the new EHL campus in Singapore. SWISS WOMEN IN WINE Though the wine industry is traditionally a male-dominated domain, the masterclass confirmed that it is slowly but surely changing. After Jenny Ang, Managing Director EHL Campus (Singapore), Ambassador Fabrice Filliez, and Oliver Mumenthaler (Robert Parker Wine Advocate) welcomed the class, we handed the microphone to Switzerland, where moderator Johanna Dayer introduced Swiss winemakers Marie-Thérèse Chappaz, Laura Paccot and Anne-Claire Schott. One by one, the winemakers guided the audience through a selection of three white and three red wines. Moderated by Claudio Salgado, the participants addressed their questions directly to the wine makers. "What grapes does this one contain?" they asked. "The grape composition actually doesn’t matter much in this situation. What determines this wine’s character is the holistic approach to how it is made," Anne-Claire emphasised. SUSTAINABLE AND BIODYNAMIC VITICULTURE All the featured wines were certified by Demeter, one of the strictest certifications for organic and sustainable agriculture in Europe. Their makers do not use chemical pesticides and artificial fertilisers, and respect the ecological diversity in the vineyard. To
preserve the natural quality of the biodynamic grapes, minimal or no technology, auxiliary materials and additives are used throughout the wine-making process. FASCINATING FOOD FOR THOUGHT Among the many things we learned during the masterclass was that the phases of the moon help determine when to prune, harvest and bottle wine. Biodynamic farmers go beyond organics and strive to grow their vines in sync with natural rhythms. The evening served up much food for thought as well as a stellar Swiss wine to drink. A most enjoyable time was had by all. "We don’t have winemakers in Singapore. It is such a unique experience to be able to directly talk to them," said participant Adela Tan. "And to see pictures of the agricultural landscape helped a lot with grasping their unique approaches on making natural wine." RELIVE THE EVENING, RELISH THE HIGHLIGHTS A short video showing highlights of the evening is available on our Facebook page and Ambassador Filliez’s Twitter The wine masterclass was jointly organised by the Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore, EHL Campus (Singapore), Robert Parker Wine Advocate:
IN SUPPORT OF A GOOD CAUSE The Embassy donated S$7.50 from every bottle used at the event to the organic label Demeter Switzerland, in support of their project on soil fertility and Swiss sustainability in agriculture. Article and photos courtesy of Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore

Episode #1: Indonesia and Malaysia’s Surge of Investment and Autonomy
T
he first of many fascinating episodes focuses on China’s involvement with our close Southeast Asian neighbours, Indonesia and Malaysia.
MARITIME SOUTHEAST ASIA: CHINA’S GATEWAY FOR OIL AND TRADE Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore for that matter border important maritime trade routes for China. Ben Bland, Director of the Southeast Asia Programme at the Lowy Institute in Australia, sheds light on how each country is managing its relationship with China – or not. “There’s probably only a few countries in Southeast Asia who have a strategy for managing China. There’s Vietnam – which obviously has a long and painful experience with China, war with the west, and playing off great powers against each other, and probably Singapore as well,” says Ben. So, how do our Indonesian neighbours balance economic opportunity with political risk? Is it possible to remain ‘equidistant’ with China and the U.S.? And what do the people want?

There’s probably only a few countries in Southeast Asia who have a strategy for managing China. There’s Vietnam – which obviously has a long and painful experience with China... and probably Singapore as well.
And closer to home, how do Malaysian sentiments towards China compare with those of Indonesia? Are Malaysia’s longstanding territorial disputes over low-lying islands in the South China Sea deliberately played down to leverage economic opportunities? How does the sizeable ethnic Chinese minority complicate things further? Tune in and find out the answers to these pressing questions and more. Or at the very least, start asking some new questions. Q. HOW LONG BEFORE I FLY DO I NEED TO GET THE TESTS DONE? Most European countries have stipulated that the COVID-19 test be taken within 72 hours from the scheduled departure time. Recent changes by some countries like Germany, Austria, Croatia, Denmark and Sweden require the pre-departure COVID-19 test to be done within 48 hours of arrival. The Netherlands and Norway require the testing to be done at most 24 hours before departure.

Q. HOW IS THE COVID-19 TEST UNDERTAKEN? Both the COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test and Antigen Rapid Test (ART) are nasopharyngeal swab tests. A trained healthcare professional like a nurse or a doctor will take a swab sample from the nose and/or throat of the traveller.

Q. WHAT IS THE CURRENT PRE-DEPARTURE TESTING (PDT) PROCESS? Travellers from Singapore entering European countries are required to provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test result to the airline at the time of check-in and at immigration upon arrival at most destinations. You will need to undergo Pre-Departure Testing (PDT), usually in the form of a swab test, within a specific time frame from the departure to or arrival into your destination country. The result of your negative COVID-19 test will be available to you within a short period of time in the form of a digitalised health certificate. You will need to check with your embassy for other mandatory travel declarations, valid visas and permission to visit.

The above table provides information on pre-departure requirements for travellers from Singapore to some common European destinations. This information is accurate as of 17 May 2021. Please check the latest government guidelines for updates on the country you are travelling to in order to determine the type of testing required and how soon before departure the test has to be undertaken.
Q. HOW DO I SHARE MY COVID-19 TEST RESULTS WITH AUTHORITIES? All departing travellers having their Pre-Departure Testing (PDT) in Singapore will receive a digital health certificate if their test is negative. PCR digital certificates will need to be authenticated and endorsed via https://www.notarise.gov.sg before travel. This ensures that the result and certificate are issued and authenticated by a Ministry of Health approved clinic/test laboratory and have not been tampered with. At Osler Health, the notarisation process has been incorporated in all digital PCR Fit-to-Fly health certificates that we issue. Q. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PCR TEST AND AN ART? The PCR test is the gold standard test for COVID-19 and is recognised internationally. Done by Ministry of Health-approved laboratories, it is used to diagnose a COVID-19 infection and for pre-departure testing. Osler Health will provide a digital Fit-to-Fly certificate for all PDTs. The turnaround time is 24 hours, and there is a faster option for same-day results. The Antigen Rapid Test (ART) is a nasal swab with a 30 minutes turnaround time. It can also be used for pre-event testing and back-to-work clearance. Some countries are approving its use for Pre-Departure Testing (Germany, USA and some European countries). More and more countries are now accepting the ART for pre-departure testing, especially those that have stipulated testing to be done 24 hours before departure (such as Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland). Q. DO I STILL NEED TO UNDERTAKE A PDT IF I AM VACCINATED? Yes, for most countries you will still need a PDT. You will still need a PDT. This is because whilst there is evidence that the COVID-19 vaccines are effective in preventing symptomatic disease, the vaccinations are not 100% foolproof and the extent of their ability in preventing transmission of the infection to others is still being studied.
Q. WHAT SAFETY MEASURES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR THE AIRPORT AND PLANE? Masks must be worn at all times at airports, on all international flights and any domestic connections. Safe distancing must be observed as much as possible especially when boarding aircraft, within the plane, at immigration points and baggage claims. Avoid unnecessary movements during the flight and congregating around toilets. Practise regular and frequent hand sanitising and hand washing with soap and water. Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth, particularly after contact with commonly shared surfaces. Q. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR RETURNING TO SINGAPORE? All returning travellers from Europe will require the 21-day Stay-Home-Notice (SHN) in government-approved facilities such as designated hotels. Mandatory PCR tests are done on day 14 and day 21 of SHN. As the requirements are frequently changing, please check www.safetravel.ica.gov.sg/ for the latest update. The information above is correct as of 17 May 2021. Please note that the global travel ecosystem is fluid. Call us at Osler Health International and we can explain what test you need, when and for which destination. After Work, It’s Fishing and Family for Fabian
ur youthful-looking Business Development Manager Fabian is actually a married 41-year-old father of three. In his free time, he enjoys fishing and music. PATIENCE AND PERSEVERANCE “Fishing is my favourite hobby. It cultivates patience and requires perseverance in reeling in the catch,” said Fabian. It occurred to us that fishing is not unlike cultivating a business relationship or closing a sale, especially during the pandemic slowdown. Prior to joining the Swiss Club, Fabian filled a similar role at the Orchid Country Club. Though he joined us on the cusp of
arguably the most difficult time in history, membership numbers have remained steady and even slightly increased. Fabian is always on the lookout, too, for new partnerships that will add value to membership. A JOB WITH A VIEW Despite the challenging times, Fabian loves working at the Swiss Club. He enjoys the lush natural surroundings and the friendly and motivating workplace culture. “With the pandemic situation, all operations are being affected. It is very heartwarming to see all of my fellow colleagues putting in their best effort to support each department amicably. And Members have shown great understanding,” said Fabian.

Flower Trail
Count the Orchids and Edelweiss
We have planted the national flowers of Singapore and Switzerland throughout the pages of this magazine, including the two on this page.
How many can you find? I can find
Vanda Miss Joaquim orchids. I can find
The Vanda Miss Joaquim orchid, also known as the Singapore orchid, was named after a Singaporean-Armenian lady who first grew the flower in her garden in Tanjong Pagar by cross-breeding two other types of orchid in 1893. It was Singapore’s first hybrid orchid and the first hybrid orchid bred by a woman.
Edelweiss. Edelweiss, the national flower of Switzerland, grows in alpine regions and is believed to have medicinal and even magical qualities. For example, in the 1970 classic ‘Asterix in Switzerland’, Asterix and Obelix are sent on a search to find edelweiss, or ‘silver star’, as an antidote to a poison!
Email a screen shot of this completed page to marketing@swissclub.org.sg with the subject ‘Singapore and Switzerland’, along with your name, Membership number and contact telephone number. The first 3 correct entries received will each WIN a Swiss Club kids' fun pack worth $50. Winners will be notified by email. 34
