Unveiling Our 150th Anniversary Logo As you would almost certainly have heard, 2021 marks the long-awaited 150th Anniversary of the Swiss Club in Singapore. It is with pride and pleasure that we unveil the official logo for the year’s celebrations. A TEAM EFFORT The logo you see on this page is the result of a months-long collaborative process, spearheaded by Aaron and Riza. We would like to thank those Members who submitted their suggestions, the Committee for their valued feedback and patience, and everyone who contributed to this colourful journey of 150 years and counting. A NOD TO THE PAST, AN EYE ON THE FUTURE The modern typography and minimalist graphic elements counterbalance the long, rich heritage of the Club. The absence of the lower portions of the numerals ‘150’ loosely references a rising sun – a metaphor for the Club’s onward and upward journey. While we gratefully acknowledge the past, we look forward to the future with curiosity, optimism and excitement.

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

INSIDE THIS ISSUE SWISS CLUB

Dear Members, How lucky we all are to be a part of the history-making 150th anniversary year of the Swiss Club. I have no doubt that it will be a year of wonderful celebrations, despite the lingering restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. After delving into the archives, I was particularly fascinated by the colourful accounts of early events. My imagination was ignited by references to rum cocktails served in coconut shells on ‘Hawaiian night’, and fashion parades showcasing swimming costumes through the ages and the latest in ladies’ corsetry and lingerie. And to think that these sophisticated soirees took place in the nifty fifties. Clearly, your predecessors were no wowsers! Speaking of events, the centrespread of this magazine contains a summary of all Club events for the two months of this issue’s shelf life along with those of the following month. If all goes according to plan, it will become a permanent part of ‘Relax’. We hope you find it helpful in planning your busy lives. Kudos to the hard-working and resourceful Events team behind it all. Happy New Year, Happy Chinese New Year, Happy Valentine’s Day – and Happy 150th Anniversary!

A WORD FROM THE

COMMITTEE

As we embark on a New Year, I wish everyone all the best, lots of happiness and – most of all – good health in 2021. Although the outlook for the year ahead is generally mixed, there are some landmark events to look forward to.

Dear Swiss Club Members, Dear Readers of ‘Relax’, As we bid farewell to 2020 – a year we will certainly not forget anytime soon – I trust you had a wonderful Christmas. Many of us would usually travel home for Christmas, something which was not possible for most this year. I hope the Club has been able to add some cheer to your Christmas experience. As we embark on a New Year, I wish everyone all the best, lots of happiness and – most of all – good health in 2021. Although the outlook for the year ahead is generally mixed, there are some landmark events to look forward to. First of all, 2021 is the year the Swiss Club turns a venerable 150 years old. Despite its respectable age, the Clubhouse will be rejuvenated and modernised without compromising on its historic charm. Bar any unforeseen circumstances, the renovated Clubhouse is scheduled to reopen in its entire glory at the end of the first quarter 2021. You can look forward to a revamped Pergola and the new Arbenz lounge ‘Under the Stars’. Due to popular demand, the Jungle Cove seating by the pool will remain even after the Pergola has reopened. We will keep you informed about the various new and exciting changes closer to the official opening of the Clubhouse. Furthermore, the 150th anniversary of the Swiss Club in 2021 is reason to celebrate. The year-long celebration will showcase various Swiss traditions and the best Switzerland has to offer – beyond chocolate and cheese. Although we planned for big events once a quarter – open to both Members and the public – we will most likely have to scale them down considerably or even postpone them to 2022 due to the ongoing pandemic and Singapore’s cautious approach to

returning to a ‘new normal’. The first event is scheduled to coincide with the opening of the renovated Clubhouse. More information will follow closer to the date. Watch this space! I would like to thank the many Members who responded to our Members’ Survey – a platform to express your ideas and affection for the Club. An overwhelming number of Members participated and we are very grateful for your words of encouragement, as well as your concerns, criticism and ideas for improvement. We heard you. Some of your suggestions have already been put into action, and others will follow. Last but not least, I am confident that you will agree with me when I say that the Swiss Club team has done a formidable job in 2020 to keep the Club running and improving despite the difficult circumstances caused by the pandemic and the ongoing renovation. My thanks go to the entire team for going the extra mile in 2020 and providing all of us with a superb Club experience. A word of encouragement or thanks from you to the staff will go a long way. What better occasion than the 150th anniversary for all of us to work together to make the Swiss Club an even better home away from home for everyone! Wishing you a Happy and Prosperous New Year. See you at the Club!

A MESSAGE FROM THE

GENERAL MANAGER

In view of our diverse membership base, which represents more than 40 nationalities, this year we will begin celebrating the national days of numerous countries around the world (not just those of Singapore and Switzerland). We hope that this will further strengthen the spirit of inclusiveness that has always made the Club a welcoming ‘second home’ for everyone, wherever they hail from.

Dear Members, I always take great pleasure in extending ‘double wishes’ for happiness at this very festive time of the year. And so I wish you and yours both a Happy New Year and a Happy Chinese New Year. As we usher in the Year of the Ox, let us bid goodbye (and dare I say good riddance) to 2020. For those of you who are still enjoying the ‘winter holidays’, I hope that you have found meaningful ways to spend time away from work duties and studies. Necessity is the mother of invention, as the saying goes. This pandemic has forced almost everyone to think laterally in order to circumnavigate the obstacles that have been imposed on us, and our close-knit team at the Swiss Club is no exception. After intensive brainstorming, my colleagues and I are pleased to offer you a diverse array of new activities, from farm tours and art workshops to social quiz nights and much, much more. We are intent on starting the new year with a bang, and hope that you will join us! Amid all this talk of ‘new norms’, there is much comfort to be found in the familiar. Rest assured that our regular annual events remain on the calendar. We will

6

continue to celebrate Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day, subject to the prevailing restrictions. If anything, recent events have renewed the importance of good food. The Swiss Club has always enjoyed a great reputation for its culinary offerings, and that will never change. It is my pleasure to introduce our new Chef de Cuisine Razy, who has already applied his signature style to our F&B specials, outlined in this issue of ‘Relax’. Come sample his creations – and do save space for one of the new desserts, confectionery or bakery items devised by our new pastry chef Steven. In closing, I sincerely thank you and all of our valued Members for your continued support throughout 2020 and into 2021. We will do our utmost to reward your loyalty and your faith in the Club. I would also like to thank my team for going the extra mile and taking on extra duties without a murmur of complaint, to make sure the Club runs as per ‘normal’. See you at the Club – masks and all! Best regards,

A. Lim

HEALTH AND SAFETY NEWS

Another Year of Mask-wearing and Social Distancing

T

ogether with the events team, we have been curating various events over the coming months, in compliance with the ongoing Government Guidelines on Safe Management. We look forward to your cooperation and participation.

KEEPING YOU SAFE AND THE CLUB OPEN Though social distancing has now become a habit, we still observe low levels of non-compliance with regards to Safe Management Measures. One area of concern is mask-wearing around the pool. While it may be somewhat uncomfortable to put on a mask when you are relaxing, I strongly urge everyone to mask by the pool. You may remove it when you are in the pool or when you are eating. The authorities have been constantly visiting us every weekend to check on our compliance with these measures. I am pleased to inform that there were no major lapses detected within the Club.

A Message for the New Year Dear Members of the Swiss Club, Dear Readers of 'Relax', I hope that you have all had a wonderful festive season and a restful break as we bid farewell to 2020. I understand that for many, this year’s holiday season was a rather unusual one, as travelling was and still is difficult. Nevertheless I hope you enjoyed the many activities in Singapore and some of the delicious delights offered by our Swiss F&B partners. We thank those of you who participated in our Facebook advent calendar quiz for the daily Swiss giveaways. We truly enjoyed your creative answers and hope it lifted your spirits just as much as it did ours. 2020 was a year of adapting and accepting change and I am proud of my colleagues for rising to the challenge and successfully continuing to engage the community. We embrace 2021 with optimism and enthusiasm, and are hopeful that the New Year is a year filled with more welcome news and fruitful activities. Our excitement is evident in the quality programme the embassy has planned. This year will be a special one as we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Swiss Club. We will also have the highly anticipated launch of the EHL campus here in Singapore and our second ever Swiss Week. On the diplomatic side, visits from Federal Councillors are in the pipeline, which will provide a great opportunity to further strengthen the relations between our two countries. We are also working on a new edition of Swiss Week in 2021, to celebrate and further foster intercultural exchanges between Singapore and Switzerland on many levels including culture, innovation, education and gastronomy. It is the perfect occasion to showcase the diverse facets of Switzerland, and to engage in exciting experiences here and in the region. We look forward to collaborating with our Swiss community and partners both in Switzerland and in Singapore for this year’s Swiss festivities, scheduled for the last quarter of the year. In addition to Swiss Week 2021, we have a range of projects lined up, which includes our annual participation in the Francophonie festival in March, the European Film Festival, Archifest, and of course our August 1 National Day celebrations. To kick off the cultural activities of 2021, we will be hosting a two-part webinar series on the impact of COVID-19 on culture. In partnership with the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), we will present two conversations on the future of the arts in the ‘new normal’, engaging with artists, cultural institutions and government representatives in Switzerland and in Asia. These are just a handful of the many activities we have planned. As we expand our scope to include more areas of collaboration between Switzerland and Singapore, we aim to bring you more of the indomitable Swiss spirit, right here in the Lion City. For our latest updates, we invite you to follow us on Facebook (@SwissEmbassySingapore), our LinkedIn (Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore) and my Twitter (@SwissAmbSGP). On behalf of the embassy, I wish everyone a joy-filled year ahead and look forward to meeting you at our events this year! Sincerely, Fabrice Filliez Ambassador of Switzerland Article and photos courtesy of Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore

Mosaic of Memories

O

n the occasion of the Swiss Club’s 150th anniversary, we bring you a glimpse of your Club’s rich and colourful past. Many of the milestones and memories have been reproduced from One Hundred Years of the Swiss Club in Singapore, 1871-1971, by Hans Schweizer-Iten.

1871

The Swiss Club is founded by Mr Otto Alder and friends. Known as the Swiss Rifle Shooting Club of Singapore, it was located in a forested area off Balestier Road.

1901

After receiving notice that their premises were sitting illegally on land belonging to a Chinese landowner, the Club moves to a new 46-acre site at Bukit Tinggi (latter-day Bukit Timah).

1902

On 10 August 1902, the opening of the new Club buildings is celebrated with 100 attendees in a splendid festival of song, dance and spectacular lighting, featuring two Swiss crosses illuminating the shooting range.

10

1909

Fire breaks out in the Club’s buildings and destroys Club records.

1921

On the occasion of the Club’s 50th anniversary, founder Otto Alder pens an ode to Singapore and the Swiss Club. Here is an excerpt: “Singapore! It is full fifty years since I left the small mountain village of Hemberg in the Toggenburg… and arrived in Singapore, overcome by the tropical beauty of the magnificent island. I was privileged to stay there for four years only, but, when I had to leave the island, I was not alone: a considerable number of friends accompanied

me to the ship. Four years are a short space of time in the life of a man, especially if a kind providence has granted him a long one. For me these four years have since been an inexhaustible source of cherished memories. The most treasured part of all is that there I won friends for life.”

1921

A joint celebration is held in honour of Swiss National Day and the Swiss Club’s 50th anniversary.

1925

The Swiss Rifle Shooting Club changes its name to the Swiss Club.

1927

Designed by H.R. Arbenz and spearheaded by H. Huber (known as the ‘Tribefeder’, literally ‘main spring’), the new Clubhouse is completed. (It stands to this day, and will soon be unveiled after undergoing renovations.)

1941

On 8 December, the Japanese invade Singapore. Wartime looters destroy Club records.

1952

A ‘Schuetzenfest mit Jahrmarkt’ (shooting festival with fair) is held, with stalls for ring-throwing, bottle-fishing, nail hammering, air rifle shooting and confectionery.

1957

The first of many car rallies, combining map reading with the deciphering of clues to reach a mystery destination, is held.

1960

Club Vice-President W.E. Huber writes in his yearly report: “For the benefit of future Club historians, the consumption during the year comprised: 2840½ pegs of Whisky 1544½ pegs of Brandy 7125 pints of Beer 224 quarts of Wine 1219 measures of Kirsch”

1963 1951

The Grand Opening of the renovated pool features a mannequin parade showcasing six decades of bathing suit fashions, male and female.

1952

A fashion parade showcases the latest in ladies’ underwear, corsetry, nighties, bathing suits and beach wear.

Dance classes are introduced, featuring modern moves like the Twist, the Bossa Nova, the Madison, the Pachanga (a LatinAmerican dance of Cuban origin) and the Limbo Rock.

1965

The Consul for Switzerland suggests at the Ordinary General Meeting that nationals of Singapore and Malaysia should be permitted to join as Members. An overwhelming majority of Members vote in favour of the suggestion.

1966

The first Mother’s Day lunch is held, with great success.

1967

Swiss School in Singapore (SSiS) opens on the grounds of the Swiss Club on 2 May, with 18 kindergarten students and 10 primary school students.

1967

Around 10% of Swiss Club land is requisitioned by the Singapore Government at market prices.

1969

A sports festival is held in conjunction with the staging of Gilbert and Sullivan’s one-act opera 'Cox and Box'.

1971

The Swiss Club celebrates its centenary.

1971

The Committee votes in favour of the sale of parcels of land belonging to the Swiss Club, in three phases: Phase 1 8 acres Phase II 6 to 8 acres Phase III 9 acres

A Meaningful Christmas and a Hope-filled New Year

T

he 2020 Christmas Light Up at the Club was a little more sedate than usual, but no less merry and possibly more meaningful than ever before.

JOY OF GIVING On Sunday 6 December 2020, the Swiss Club hosted a festive gathering for the young beneficiaries of Children’s Wishing Well at Edelweiss, our function room behind the leisure pool. Though staff and Members of the Club had sponsored gifts for 40 children, due to COVID-19 restrictions only 10 were able to be physically present. Ten tables of five seated our young guests, their parents and/or guardians, Children's Wishing Well and Swiss Club staff, along with kind Members who had donated gifts. After a warm welcome speech by our GM Aaron, dinner was served and presents

14

unwrapped. Our guests tucked into turkey or barramundi with mashed potato, Movenpick ice cream and Christmas cookies. The feast was washed down with free-flow soft drinks, and mulled wine for the grownups. The children received the gifts they had ‘wished for’ in advance – mostly

humble requests for sports equipment such as badminton rackets, a football and basketball, stationery sets, clothing and watches. Two thumbs up to Adrian, Aaron, Fabian, and Maya and Eden (who teamed up), who fulfilled four children’s Christmas wishes by generously sponsoring four gifts.

E V E N T S

All present expressed their thanks to the Swiss Club and its Members for hosting the event. Yuva, a young Children's Wishing Well guest, spoke for everyone when she said, “It’s really fun and it looks beautiful. I met such nice people. I would like to say thank you so much for this event!” It was a heart-warming sight to see our Members’ children warmly interact with our young guests, escorting them to the playground and playing badminton with the gifted rackets. It confirmed that children heed no socio-economic or cultural barriers – kids just want to have fun!

15

E V E N T S

LET IT SNOW, LET IT GLOW! At 6.45pm, our guests and Members gathered around the pool for the moment we’d all been waiting for – the Christmas Light Up! At 7.15pm, the snow machine was switched on and the Club was aglow with twinkling coloured lights. Finally, it was beginning to feel a lot like Christmas… Music and merriment filled the air, while social distancing was observed on the ground. Our ever-watchful Safety Management Officers Adrian and Elvis patrolled the premises and gently reminded those present to do the right thing. Along with their own gifts and prettily wrapped gifts for 30 other children, our guests from the Children's Wishing Well took home goody bags brimming with reusable masks and hand sanitiser, kindly sponsored by a Committee Member, Swiss Club T-shirts, soft toys and chocolates.

THOUGHTS ON THE YEAR PAST, HOPES FOR THE YEAR AHEAD We took the opportunity to ask some of the guests and Members to share their reflections on the year past and the yearend, along with their hopes for 2021. Here are some of their thoughtful responses.

“So many things happened in 2020 besides COVID-19 – the Australian bushfires, earthquakes, volcanoes, ‘Black Lives Matter’, Trump… But somehow it all ended well for us. We feel safe here in Singapore, and we have a baby on the way. We will definitely remember this year – for all the bad things and the good things that happened… For us personally, this Christmas is very different because it’s our first tropical Christmas. Every new year is a new challenge. We are young and motivated, and looking forward to what 2021 will bring us!” Bojan Mirkovic, Swiss Club Sports Partner

“Though it was forced upon us, I truly appreciated the intimacy of being intensely connected to my family, without the distractions of travel and so many other things. I think this year can be a steppingstone for change. We’re thinking more about sustainability issues and the environment and how we live our lives – including selfcare and working in the digital space. When things break down, there are a lot of opportunities to build them back up in a new and improved way. I hope to see that, and I think Singapore can do it more so than most places.” Christin Kos, Swiss Club Member

“I think we should learn from what we experienced. I don’t mind not travelling so much. I love working from home. I’m around my wife all the time – sometimes we have three meals a day together. It’s very nice. That’s how it should be, actually.” Patrick Kos, Swiss Club Member

“Though we won’t be seeing our extended family in Europe, I have noticed that expats in Singapore are doing a lot more things to celebrate amongst themselves. Usually, everybody is busy packing and getting ready to travel at this time of the year. But this year, people are devoting a lot of effort to doing things with each other. It’s going to be a nice Christmas after all!” Meghan Schmidt-Sanders, Swiss Club Member

“Our friends will be our family this Christmas!” Mrs Ribeiro Yolando, Swiss Club Member

$65 per bottle $14 per 150ml glass

This wine has a very appealing expressive nose with white flower scents. Its attack is bold and generous. Balanced on the palate, it has good volume and quite exceptional long-lasting scents and tastes for this appellation.

This 100% Pinot Noir is bright and fruity with strawberry and orange-peel aromas that follow through to a medium body, bright acidity and a clean finish. Crisp and clean, it is an excellent Bourgogne red.

$65 per bottle $14 per 150ml glass

This charming wine leads with an assertive yet delightfully fresh bouquet of tropical fruits mingling with Meyer lemon zest and sweet garden herbs, with lingering notes of kiwi and rockmelon. The fruity palate is enmeshed with a soft yet persistent acidity, while the finish is clean, refreshing and bright.

This dark cherry-coloured wine has a perfume of ripe juicy plum, licorice, rosemary, earth and cocoa. The palate begins with stewed plum characters, followed by dark chocolate, pencil shavings and salty caramel. Its powerful lingering flavour and elegant tannins make it a perfect food wine, with great integration and structure.

Personal Training for Young Adults

M

ost of us at Active Fitness spent our teens playing sports and training in the gym to get fitter, stronger and faster. Our own experiences confirm the benefits of training from a young age.

A POWERFUL COMBINATION Training in the gym while playing sports is a huge advantage. I recall playing rugby as a teenager, and not being big enough or fast enough to make it to the first team. Being 14 years old, I was obsessed with getting bigger and faster, so I joined the gym and started working out. I met a great trainer who gave me the guidance I needed to increase my size, strength and speed. With the right training and nutrition advice, I quickly achieved my goals, joined the team and started playing the sport I loved at the level I wanted. (It also created a future career path for me, but that is another story!) CONFIDENCE AND COURAGE When we launched personal training at the Swiss Club in 2014, there was only one young adult among our first group of clients. We successfully mentored and guided him over the years, which resulted in him becoming stronger, fitter and more confident in himself. Besides looking and feeling good, being fit has many positive mental benefits for young adults, including boosting

self-confidence. This in turn helps you muster up the courage to do things which you might otherwise find daunting. Seeing the large positive impact we could make on young adults, we developed various youth programmes aimed at males and females, young adults and kids. NEVER TOO YOUNG (OR OLD) As you embark on a new year, remember that you’re never too young to start your fitness journey. If you’re looking to boost your physical strength and personal confidence, or want to gain an edge in your chosen sports, let’s talk soon. We’ll do our best to help you realise your goals. NEWS FROM THE

A Magical Evening of Stars and Light!

T

he year 2020 was an extraordinary one, filled with challenges that seemed to bring out a special kind of goodness in us all.

CELEBRATION WITH A DIFFERENCE The Swiss School in Singapore (SSiS) chose the theme ‘Star Light, Star Bright’ for its annual Advent Celebration. In keeping with the theme, our courtyard was illuminated by hundreds of fairy lights! Traditionally, SSiS students prepare wonderful performances that mesmerise and delight their parents, stakeholders, the committee and school staff on the last day of school. However, in view of the exceptional circumstances of 2020, we put our heads together and came up with a slightly different Advent Celebration. On 1 December 2020, we distributed handmade Advent calendars, which counted down the days to 24 December, to parents, stakeholders and staff. However, these were no ordinary Advent calendars. In this specially adapted calendar, magical

30

performances from all classes and programmes were found behind the windows, accessible with a QR code. Every day revealed a new performance. In addition to these creative Advent calendars, the respective grades put on an amazing performance on stage, all of which were filmed by a videographer on 17 December. The link to the performance was sent home on 22 December for all to watch while enjoying the delicious cookies that the children took home with them – a little gift from SSiS! AN UNUSUAL BUT MAGICAL CHRISTMAS It was an unusual Christmas away from home for most of us, but a magical one nonetheless. We hope all of you had a very merry Christmas and a peaceful and healthy start to the new year.

Food for Thought with Razy

t is our pleasure to introduce you to the Club’s new Chef de Cuisine, Hussain Syirazy, aka ‘Razy’. And very soon it will be your pleasure to sample his wonderful new dishes – if you haven’t already done so – featured in this issue of ‘Relax’ on Pages 20 to 22. SINGAPORE, SYDNEY, SHANGHAI… SWISS CLUB! A graduate of At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy in Singapore, Razy has gained overseas experience at 5-star hotels and restaurants from Shanghai to Sydney. Most

recently, he was Chef de Cuisine at the acclaimed Salt grill & Sky bar, specialising in modern Australian cuisine. He is 31 years old, and engaged to be married. Razy enjoys working at the Swiss Club for many reasons – including the shared commitment to a common vision and the family environment. “My bosses Aaron and Adrian listen to my ideas, and the whole team works together to make miracles happen. It feels extremely good to be appreciated and listened to,” shared Razy. OFF DUTY, ON THE BALL When Razy’s not working, he enjoys running and playing soccer. He is also a keen amateur food photographer.

Fun fact: Razy is left-handed, but has mastered the art of handling a knife in his right hand! RAZY RECOMMENDS… Razy passed on his thanks to all Members for their support to date. He highly recommends the sharing platters, the weekly vegetarian specials, and the newly introduced desserts of the month that are made in-house. “Nothing brings people together like good food,” shared Razy. “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well if one has not dined well.” Wise words, Razy. We love your work.
