A Note from the Editor
Inside this Issue General
Dear Members and readers, Welcome to your new-look, new-name magazine. Formerly ‘Relax’, ‘Swiss Club’ speaks volumes and says it all. Unlike your previous magazine, a quarterly, ‘Swiss Club’ is a biannual publication that doubles as a physical souvenir of Members’ happy times at the Club. Please read it, enjoy it, and keep it for future reminiscing. What a year 2021 was. What a year 2022 is turning out to be. When COVID-19 first reared its spiky head, many expected it to blow over within months. Few predicted that it would become the ongoing, life-changing, world-transforming event of the century that it has proven itself to be. I am personally embarrassed by how casually, almost blithely I dismissed it. That said, this pandemic has not been all bad. Personally, I think it has brought out the best in many people, and served to remind us of what’s truly important in the world. Health, family, friends, freedom – and really, not much else matters. Of course, true freedom requires financial security; freedom from stress and the limitations that a lack of income imposes. I hope that your physical and financial health have not been seriously affected by the coronavirus. If they have, may you recover and rebound quickly. I leave you with a toast that a dear friend sent me in one of those viral videos that spread like wildfire on the Internet: To staying positive, and testing negative... Cheers! And one more: Some ships are wooden ships but those ships may sink. The best ships are friendships and to those ships we drink... Happy New Year!

THE EMBASSY LOOKS FORWARD TO CONTINUING A CLOSE AND SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIP, CELEBRATING SWISS TRADITIONS AND CULTURE TOGETHER.

Dear Members of the Swiss Club, I hope you had a happy Christmas holiday and have started the new year with lots of joy. 2021 was another challenging year for the Swiss community in Singapore. Many were separated from their loved ones back home, experienced illness in their families and felt the impact of social distancing regulations. I am all the more grateful that the Vaccinated Travel Lane between Singapore and Switzerland has enabled families to be reunited again, ending the year on a positive note. With Singapore gradually opening its borders, we are hopeful that cross-border movement and connections will help us heal as a society, as one community and as an economy. Staying connected is the only way for Switzerland and Singapore to overcome the many challenges that still lie ahead. 2021 was a very special year for the Swiss Club as it celebrated its 150th anniversary in Singapore. We are proud that it is one of the most historic clubs in Singapore, providing a home away from home to the Swiss and international community. The recently renovated historic Clubhouse, surrounded by lush greenery, is truly a little oasis for families in Singapore. Despite the many challenges of social distancing, the Swiss Club managed to celebrate its anniversary with various Swiss traditions and events. The Swiss Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer, who visited the FinTech Festival in Singapore with a delegation of high-ranking representatives from the Swiss financial centre in November, held his welcome brief in the beautiful and historical Rifle Lounge! I would like to thank Rolf Gerber for his tireless commitment, all his work and the close collaboration with the Swiss Embassy and Swiss pillars during his time as President at the Swiss Club. He will be missed, but I am sure that he will
maintain close contacts with all of us. I take this opportunity to congratulate the new President Thomas von Rueti, already well known in the community, and wish him all the best of success in his new role. The embassy looks forward to continuing a close and sustainable partnership, celebrating Swiss traditions and culture together. To kick-start the new year with positive energy, I am happy to announce that the embassy has an exciting programme lined up for spring 2022: The Swiss Weeks. We will be screening family-friendly films at Gardens By the Bay and present culinary events and highlights in collaboration with our Swiss food and beverage partners and EHL Campus (Singapore). We will be presenting TechArt and Swiss Cleantech solutions at the Singapore Sustainable Gallery. Other events include an embroidery workshop, an exhibition in the context of the renovation of the Swiss Embassy, a concert with Swiss-Singapore Artist Tabitha Nauser, an open day at the Swiss School, and many more events. Last but not least, we will be presenting +Pavilion, a pop-up installation developed with Swiss and local partners. Please find more information about the Swiss Weeks by following our Facebook page (@SwissEmbassySingapore) and my Twitter account (@SwissAmbSGP). On behalf of our team, I wish you a very Happy New Year filled with joy and peace. With warm greetings,
F. Filliez
Fabrice Filliez Ambassador of Switzerland
A Message from the President I want to take this opportunity to thank our Members for their tremendous support during the year. Our F&B offering is a good example, which Members enjoyed despite everchanging restrictions – from takeaway only to dining for five, to dining for eight, and back to dining for two.
The start of a new year is always a great moment to reflect a little on the past year and, more importantly, to look forward to a new year full of opportunities.
Many thanks to Aaron, Adrian and their team for the great job they’ve done during this incredibly challenging year. They have continually had to adapt to new rules, redesigning or even postponing events, whilst always finding new ways to maintain the appeal of the Club.
The year 2021 marked the 150th anniversary of our Club, and we had grand plans to celebrate this memorable event. Needless to say, the pandemicrelated restrictions made most of them impossible. Still, we provided the Club and the Members with a beautiful birthday gift in the form of our newly renovated Clubhouse. The Committee and the Management will continue to identify and implement initiatives to enhance our offering and services for our Members. The largest project scheduled in 2022 is the renovation of our Pavilion. This initiative will offer Members a fantastic gym and studio with a view to the jungle as well as new function rooms for your private and company events.
Let’s all hope that the new year will be less dominated by the pandemic, offering us some greater normality again. Based on recent developments, this looks reasonably promising.
GENERAL
I hope you and your families enjoyed the festive season. Some of you may have taken advantage of the new Vaccinated Travel Lanes and travelled to see loved ones after a long time apart. Others stayed back in Singapore and enjoyed the fantastic weather and some quality time at the Club.
On behalf of my fellow Committee members, the Management team and all our staff, I wish you and your family Happy Holidays and a Prosperous New Year in 2022.

THE START OF A NEW YEAR IS ALWAYS A GREAT MOMENT TO REFLECT A LITTLE ON THE PAST YEAR AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, TO LOOK FORWARD TO A NEW YEAR FULL OF OPPORTUNITIES.
Dear Members,
A Message from the General Manager
8 SWISS CLUB JAN - JUN 2022
GENERAL
HOPEFULLY THIS TIME NEXT YEAR I’LL BE TELLING A DIFFERENT STORY, FINGERS CROSSED, AND THERE WILL BE NOT ONLY LIGHT ON THE HORIZON BUT DATES ON OUR CALENDAR FOR THE BIGGEST BASH OF THE SUMMER AND THE BIGGEST, BEERIEST PARTY OF THE YEAR!
Dear Members, I hope you all enjoyed a heartwarming festive season with loved ones, either in Singapore or in your respective home countries. For many of you, it would have been your first trip home in two years. I can only imagine the joyous reunions! I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome back our existing Members and welcome our new ones. I am pleased to share that 250 new Members joined our community in 2021, which is quite a feat in these uncertain times. Thank you for choosing us over other Clubs. I am confident that you won’t be disappointed. While our events have been unavoidably scaled down due to COVID-19, we are working hard to reinstate many of the celebrations and activities that the Club staged and hosted prior to the pandemic. Already, many of the smaller celebrations have returned – including our annual Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner, our Easter Brunch and our Mother’s Day Brunch. Please book early to avoid disappointment, as these are normally fully booked days if not weeks in advance. Needless to say, our epic events, namely Summerfest and Oktoberfest, are unlikely to occur in the foreseeable future. Hopefully this time next year I’ll be telling a different story, fingers crossed, and there will be not only light on the horizon but dates on our calendar for the biggest bash of the summer and the biggest, beeriest party of the year! Change is the only constant, as the saying goes. While it’s something of a cliché, it’s certainly never been more applicable than it is today. In response to these fast-changing times, we’ve been working on a few changes of our
own. Please look out for new systems, new menus, some new Club furniture, and new RFID membership cards in the months to come. We’ve also recruited some new staff members, so look out for a few new faces around the Club. Rest assured that we are constantly striving to improve the Swiss Club experience. I take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for patiently and graciously accepting the necessary inconveniences of COVID-19. Please do continue to observe all necessary protocols on Safe Management Measures (SMM) and VaccinationDifferentiated Safe Management Measures (VDS), and remind your Guests to do likewise. Meanwhile, enjoy your recently renovated Clubhouse and restaurants, and look forward to the completion of Phase 2 of the renovation plans, now in progress. Finally, on behalf of the Management and staff, I wish you and your families a Happy, Healthy New Year! Let’s hope that the good far outweighs the bad, and that all future surprises will be pleasant ones. Yours sincerely,
A. Lim

The Club Lights Up! ON SATURDAY, 4 DECEMBER 2021 AT 7PM, THE SWISS CLUB WAS ILLUMINATED WITH TWINKLING LIGHTS AND THE BRIGHT EYES OF THE CHILDREN IN ATTENDANCE AT OUR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS LIGHT-UP.
EVENTS
LIGHTS, MUSIC, SNOWFALL! A healthy crowd of around 60 Members of all ages turned up at the roundabout for that much-anticipated magical moment when it finally feels like Christmas. After a light-hearted speech by our GM Aaron, the countdown to the light-up began... and the Club was aglow! After the light-up, a snow machine performed the ‘Christmas miracle’ of delivering snow to tropical Singapore. The night was set to Christmas carols, and young and old hit the grass-cushioned dancefloor.

EVENTS
THE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS DAY BRUNCH AT THE SWISS CLUB WAS A FESTIVE AFFAIR WITH MORE THAN 100 GUESTS GATHERING TO EAT, DRINK AND MAKE MERRY AT ARBENZ AND PERGOLA.
OH WHAT A FEAST! Adrian and his merry band of culinary elves dished up a fine feast of traditional, multicultural and fusion dishes that saw a steady stream of diners visiting the live serving stations from 11am through to mid-afternoon.
EVENTS
The menu included indulgent delicacies such as smoked Norwegian salmon, pan-seared foie gras, kingfish and tuna sashimi, and grass-fed Australian Angus ribeye served with truffle potato puree, ratatouille and jus. (Is your mouth watering yet?)
Of course the traditional turkey with roast chestnuts and succulent glazed ham made their obligatory appearance – alongside exotic offerings from the tandoori kitchen, including cauliflower masala, butter chicken and assorted naan. The sweet finale – macaroons, log cakes, assorted patisserie, Christmas cookies and a fruit platter.

“
For almost five years I have been doing my swimming training several times a week with aquaDucks at the Swiss Club. I enjoy the supportive, demanding and yet fun atmosphere very much. I voluntarily go even when it rains. I learn a lot from Coaches Tiara and Andrii, who both used to compete at the highest level. Thanks to them, my swimming technique has improved significantly and I have become faster. They motivate me and strengthen my confidence in my abilities. During the holidays I like to join the ‘swim and gym’ camp. Hopefully the competitions will be back soon!”

“
Eliza (aged 11), Nellie (aged 9), Bea (aged 7) and Tessie (aged 4) have been taking swimming lessons at the Swiss Club with Coach Tiara, Coach Andrii and Coach Danny for a number of years now and I simply can’t recommend them enough. It is thanks to aquaDucks that all of our children are super-confident and capable in the water. My kids still look forward to their weekly swimming lessons even after all this time. Thank you, Team aquaDucks, for all you do for our children!”

Salute the Sun
SPORTS
THE SUN SALUTATION IS ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY KNOWN AND IMPORTANT YOGA PRACTICES. HERE’S WHY IT’S AN INTEGRAL PART OF NATHALIE’S YOGA CLASSES AT THE SWISS CLUB.
Regular practice of Surya Namaskar can strengthen the back and muscles and help reduce blood sugar levels. It can also help improve metabolism and blood circulation, boost skin radiance and balance hormones. In addition, it increases the heart rate and helps regulate the entire circulatory system, thus helping to eliminate toxins.
MIND, BODY, SPIRIT The Sun Salutation neatly combines asanas, breathing and chakras stimulation, all of which contribute to heightened physical health, mental clarity, emotional stability and overall vitality. Nathalie looks forward to saluting the sun with you soon in her yoga classes at the Swiss Club.

37 SWISS CLUB JAN - JUN 2022
MULTIPLE BENEFITS The Sun Salutation or Surya Namaskar (Surya meaning ‘sun’ and Namaskar meaning ‘salutation’ in Sanskrit) can be practised as a warmup exercise or on its own.
Since this sequence moves the body in all directions, it helps to clear the energy pathways and create balance. Each movement activates most of the chakras, helping to invigorate the body while creating space. Yogis feel energised, balanced and radiant after going through the motions of the sun salutation.

message our students take away from this part of the school motto is that everyone is special in their own individual way, and that friendship is a wonderful thing that needs to be nurtured by both sides.
At the beginning of the school year, the students were introduced to their first project inspired by the new school motto. Each class planted their own class garden, leaving the method entirely up to the individual classes. During the first semester of the school year, beautiful and sustainable gardens were created.
We are looking forward to many more creative projects aligned with and in support of our school motto.
DIVERSITY AND FRIENDSHIP The values of our school are rooted in tolerance towards other opinions and lifestyles, and we encourage a genuine awareness of diversity in our school community. In discussing this topic, students have learned the value of being different and unique. The most important

6 Insights into Your Children’s Health by Dr Peter Chiu

AS PARENTS, OUR CHILDREN’S HEALTH IS A TOP PRIORITY. HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SIX COMMON CHILDREN’S HEALTH ISSUES, COURTESY OF DR PETER CHIU FROM OSLER HEALTH INTERNATIONAL.
1. WORMS Intestinal worms are a common issue worldwide, and we frequently see children with them in Singapore. The good news is that they are very unlikely to be harmful and are normally easy to deal with once we have diagnosed the problem. Threadworms are the most common and look like tiny white threads around one centimetre long. If your child complains about an itchy bottom, this may be the cause. The problem tends to be exacerbated at night. To kill the worms which are already inside the body we use anthelmintic (anti-worm) medication. This is available in tablet and liquid form and I recommend treating the whole household at the same time, even those without symptoms. The medication is generally harmless and easy to take. I also recommend cutting fingernails short
to stop itching and a thorough clean of bedsheets. If your little one is complaining of itchiness, please see a doctor.
T-shirts and swimming costumes, apply high UV sun-screen, and avoid being in direct sun during midday UV peaks.
2. SKIN PROTECTION Over 80% of skin cancer is considered preventable by reducing UV radiation exposure. Melanoma is related to intermittent, intense sun exposure – particularly in childhood. The UV Index is an international standard of measurement of the level of UV radiation. It ranges from 0 to 11+. In Singapore we average around 6 to 9 on the UV Index (sometimes it goes into an ‘extreme’ of 15). Skin cancer risks are determined by your skin type (the fairer you are, the higher the risk), family history, the number of moles you have (unfortunately the higher the risk) and the degree of sun exposure throughout your life. Protect your children by ensuring that they wear UV
3. WATER WARTS Molluscum contagiosum, also known as water warts, is a mild viral infection of the skin that causes raised spots or warts to appear on your child’s skin. It often affects young children, particularly between the ages of one and five. It is usually harmless, and will probably get better on its own within about 18 months. You are most likely to notice these on your child’s face, chest, tummy, back, armpits, behind his knees or even nappy area, though they can appear anywhere on the body. They usually go away on their own or you can come to the clinic and we can offer treatments such as freezing the warts (cryotherapy).
Symptoms include: • Low to high grade fever, possibly as high as 40ºC • Body aches, pain in muscles and bones • Severe headaches • Rash over the body • Mild bleeding from nose or gums • Abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting • Easy bruising • Change in behaviour or irritability If you think your child may have dengue fever, please contact a doctor immediately.
INTERESTS
6. MENTAL HEALTH IN TWEENS AND TEENS Adolescence is a time of many changes and can be a trying period for teenagers. While it is normal for teens to be moody and unmotivated at times, it is essential to note the tell-tale signs of mental health issues. It is important to state that teen moods are normal (!) and not all behavioural changes in teens indicate a mental health concern. If you notice the following signs in your child for more than a few weeks, it may be worth seeking external support. • Social withdrawal • Change in appetite • Change in sleep • Change in behaviour • Low mood, or an inability to take pleasure in things • Physical signs of self-harm/injury The team at Osler provide a safe space for teens with mental health issues. Come in and we can help.

4. DENGUE FEVER Many children with dengue fever have mild symptoms that appear anywhere from day 4 to 2 weeks after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Symptoms are generally mild in younger children and those who are infected with the disease for the first time. Older children, adults and those who have had a previous infection may have moderate to severe symptoms, and may develop a serious life-threatening illness called Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). Most cases resolve within a week or two and won’t cause any lasting problems. However, if symptoms get worse, seek immediate medical care.
5. HPV VACCINE The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination is now given routinely to children in many countries. Though many parents I speak to still consider HPV vaccines to be something new, the vaccine was actually approved for use more than 15 years ago. The most commonly used vaccine is called Gardasil 9 which protects against nine different strains of HPV. HPV infection of the cervix is responsible for practically all cases of cervical cancer. This can be a devastating disease and tends to affect younger women. Although boys can’t get cervical cancer themselves, they can develop other HPV-related cancers, as well as genital warts. By vaccinating boys, we are also offering added protection to their future partners. HPV vaccine is recommended for girls and boys around 10 to 14 years old.

Meet My Country
IN THIS ONLINE EPISODE AND THE ACCOMPANYING PODCAST OF ‘MEET MY COUNTRY’, JOURNALIST AND MUSICIAN KUNGA TENZIN DORJI, KNOWN AS SUPE, TALKS ABOUT HIS HOMELAND BHUTAN – THE LANDLOCKED COUNTRY LOCATED IN THE EASTERN HIMALAYAS. A LITTLE DOT WITH A DIFFERENCE After a crash course in the geography, history and economy of Bhutan, focusing on its geo-political significance and the preservation of its unique national identity, Supe was asked how Bhutan compares with its larger neighbours such as India and China. “Economically and technologically, we are far behind. But socially, we’re more equitable and a lot more secure,” said Supe. Somewhat like Singapore, though for very different reasons, Bhutan is a small country with a unique place on the world map. “We are a small little dot, wedged between the world’s two most populous countries – China to the north and India to the south... In a sense, we are overwhelmed. We have no military power. We have no economic power... The only way we could ensure our survival as a sovereign nation is to be different,” said Supe. “Culture was one of the key elements for our survival.”
“
Economically and technologically, we are far behind. But socially, we’re more equitable and a lot more secure.
Supe shared that changes that took place over hundreds of years in Europe took place “in a flash” in Bhutan. Radio broadcasting began in 1972, followed by television and the Internet in 1999. How is Bhutan dealing with these waves of change? What role does the media play in this process of development? How did the people of Bhutan rally to contain the COVID-19 pandemic? To find out the answers to these questions and more, catch the full episode at https://asiasociety.org/switzerland/ meet-my-country-bhutan-kunga-tenzin-dorji-supe or look for Asia Society Switzerland on your podcast app.

The Mindful Camp SINGAPORE’S MOST TRUSTED AND WELL-LOVED HOLIDAY CAMP, THE MINDFUL CAMP IS A 5-DAY PROGRAMME DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR CHILDREN AGED 5 TO 12. THERE ARE THREE FUN THEMED CAMPS TO CHOOSE FROM.
Dawn had witnessed the transformative power of camps in moulding a child’s character, fostering independence, and building a strong sense of self after volunteering in camps at the Omega Institute (US), a non-profit educational and wellness retreat, and seeing her own child go through yearly camps at Plum Village (France). With this, she set out to create a programme that helps children develop soft skills and equips them with the right tools to blossom into confident, caring and well-adjusted individuals.
THE MINDFUL CAMP PROGRAMMES • Camp River (ages 5 to 7 years old) • Camp Mountain (ages 8 to 12 years old) • Camp Mountain with 1-Night Staycation @The Guesthouse (ages 8 to 12 years old) • Camp Tree (ages 5 to 12 years old) A CAMP FOR EVERY AGE GROUP Camp River (ages 5 to 7 years old), Camp Mountain (ages 8 to 12 years old) and Camp Tree (ages 5 to 12 years old) are age-specific camps featuring activities tailored to children’s age-specific development needs. Each camp is built around the four pillars of mindfulness and social-emotional skills, arts, nature, and play. Together they nurture the heart, mind, and body of each child.
We are pleased to share that the Mindful Camp has received a 5-star rating on Google and a slew of great parent reviews.
Camp Fees: • 5-Day Camps are at $680 • 5-Day + 1-Night Staycation Camps at $850 • Lunch & Snacks are included • Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.30pm (Earliest: 8.30am, Latest 5.30pm) To enrol your child in the Mindful Camp, please email info@themindfulcamp.com or scan to visit the website:
MEET THE FOUNDER Dawn Sim, a Swiss Cub Member, founded the camp back in 2013. A practising psychotherapist and mindfulness practitioner, and a mother herself, she saw a gap in the camps available for kids in Singapore, which were largely academically and skillsfocused.
45 SWISS CLUB JAN - JUN 2022
Kids are kept engaged by a good balance of both indoor and outdoor activities, which include mindfulness-based lessons, craft-making, team sports, outdoor cooking and nature exploration. In addition, the kids go on a field trip and enjoy at least one animal interaction during their time at The Mindful Camp.
