Oh, what an Oktoberfest! Surely it was the best yet, though I suspect that elated revellers say that every year. The appearance of Andreas Gabalier on the Saturday night was a definite highlight. His affable charm and energetic stage presence were impossible to resist. He certainly rocked his lederhosen, and many women would have given almost anything to be that piano accordion he was squeezing… The only problem is – what will next year’s Oktoberfest hold? I mean, how can you top a party like that? Guess we’ll just have to

SWISS CLUB

A WORD FROM THE COMMITTEE

The outgoing Committee Members have all indicated their willingness to make their wealth of experience available to the incoming Committee Members. This will definitely be much appreciated as at least three quarters of the Committee Members are newly elected and have no prior Club experience. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Members for their trust and confidence in the new Committee Members by electing them at the last AGM, and the new Committee Members for their willingness to serve the Club to the best of their ability. I certainly look forward to working with the new team.

This year’s Oktoberfest was the biggest and most successful in terms of participation and revenue. More than 10,000 people attended over the five days of Oktoberfest. Dear Fellow Members, This year’s AGM – attended by 65 Members – once again saw some important decisions made and a new Committee elected. I would like to take this opportunity – and I am sure I speak on behalf of all of you – to express my appreciation to all outgoing Committee Members for their service and commitment to the Swiss Club. Special thanks go to the outgoing President, Martin Silberstein, who has served the Club with tremendous passion and dedication for the past 12 years. The Club would not be in this excellent shape and position if it had not been for his vision and leadership over the years. He will be a very hard act to follow. 6

My thanks also go to the Management and Staff who keep the Club running for your enjoyment day after day. The Club provides a unique setting with its vast grounds, dotted with big old trees and surrounded by jungle. I would like to encourage you to experience it for yourself as often as you can. Although the Club is in good shape, despite its age, we do have our challenges. The perennial issue is a declining Membership base, which has of course a direct impact on the Club’s revenues. Cost-cutting is one measure to try to counter this issue. Finding new sources of revenues is another measure to improve the Club’s financial health, and to hopefully set it on a steady path for the future. Thinking out of the box and coming up with new ideas for new sources of revenues for the Club, while making the Club even more attractive, will be one of the most important strategic tasks of the new Committee. One big source of revenue is always the Oktoberfest. This year’s Oktoberfest was the biggest and most successful in terms of participation and revenue. More than 10,000 people attended over the five days of Oktoberfest. The performance by Andreas Gabalier was a wonderful addition to this traditional cultural event, which was graced by two Ambassadors and two Members of the Singapore Parliament. We certainly hope that in 2018 we can continue to build on this year’s success. As part of the initiative to increase the Swiss Club’s attractiveness, the Club is delighted to announce a reciprocal arrangement with the prestigious

Singapore Cricket Club – one of the oldest and most traditional clubs in Singapore. This allows our Members to use the Cricket Club’s restaurant facilities from Monday till Friday and vice versa. (Please look out for the details in this issue of RELAX.) When you hold this edition of RELAX in your hands, 2017 will be drawing to a close. Christmas is fast approaching. Please look out for all the Christmas fun in the coming pages and ensure you tick your calendar for our various events and activities – especially the ‘Christmas Tree Light-up’ on 3 December and ‘Meet Santa’ on 10 December, which is always great fun for the whole family. Christmas is also a time of giving. In that spirit, we will soon be approaching you for your Ang Pow contributions. We would greatly appreciate your generosity as 100% of the contributions go to the Club’s employees, who are always here for you. It is an excellent opportunity to express your gratitude. Having worked and lived in Singapore for 21 years, Singapore has become home for my wife and I. Our three adult children have all settled in other parts of the world but keep coming back to Singapore as often as they can to reminisce and to reconnect with friends. The Swiss Club is certainly part of this, as they all attended the Swiss School, situated on Swiss Club grounds. I hope that the Swiss Club provides you too with a wealth of good memories and pleasant experiences. I look forward to seeing as many of you as often as possible at the Club. In closing, I wish all of you a wonderful festive season, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Yours sincerely,

Rolf Gerber

SWISS CLUB

A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members, Thank you for your continued support in making the Club so vibrant. It has been an exciting past two months with lots of new initiatives and some proven ‘classics’. Before we know it, the countdown to ring out 2017 will begin. The ‘classics’ refers, obviously, to the biggest and best Oktoberfest in town – and this year was no exception, apart from breaking a few records. This was thanks to your participation, our great reputation, and no doubt the added attraction of Saturday’s ‘Ladies’ Night’ where Andreas Gabalier and most of the tent’s female patrons were in no hurry to stop dancing and partying. As the dust settled, the Club and its Committee hosted the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The meeting was greatly supported by Members, who had the opportunity to thank outgoing President, Martin Silberstein and his Committee for their past services, and welcome our new Club President, Rolf Gerber and his elected Committee. At our recent Committee meeting, it was highlighted by our Membership department that some Members may have misinterpreted the recently introduced food and beverage minimum consumption spend. Feedback received indicated that some Members thought that the amount is a monthly or quarterly charge. This is not the case. The annual amount per account holder is $600, and this amount must be spent over a period of twelve months (July to June), so if you are travelling extensively there is no need to worry. For easy reference, your monthly statement provides you with a clear accumulated food and beverage spending amount to date. Remember, if you have any questions with regard to your Membership, do approach us and we will be happy to assist. I promised to provide an update on some of the refurbishments taking place at the Club. We are well aware of the swimming pool paint (or the lack of it). The current state is disappointing, and we are considering either painting it again over Christmas (which will most likely result in a similar outcome in six months) or getting the pool tiled when the Pergola,

8

Jungle Bar and Kitchen renovation takes place next year. We apologise for its less than perfect state now, but rest assured the project is not forgotten. On a more positive note, the soccer pitch will be closed for two months from midDecember, to be resurfaced with the latest in artificial turf technology. Once again, our football teams, families, coaches and schools will be able to enjoy an ideal, safe environment in which to practise their favourite sport. The new playgrounds have departed Europe and should arrive by mid-December – so kids, look out for new thrilling rides and fun features. Thank you for your patience and understanding. You may also have experienced the Rifle Lounge being brought back to life as it opens every Friday and Saturday night (except when the Club hosts events) for both pre- and post-dinner drinks. It offers a wide selection of Swiss artisanal beverages, cocktails, relaxed background music and the opportunity to entertain till late, either inside in air-conditioned comfort or on the terrace al fresco style. Yusri, Kamil and Sue are at your service. In addition, the Club hosted a superb Deutz Champagne dinner with representatives from Deutz as well as the Fromm winery Masterclass, tutored by Adam Balasoglou. Thank you to all those Members who joined, and we look forward to welcoming many more of you to upcoming events. The following pages will hopefully whet your appetite and entice you to come and participate. As we get into the spirit of Yuletide, do join in the many activities the Club has to offer. Look out for our two movie nights on 18 November and 16 December – we’ll have the popcorn and ice-cream ready for you. Also, don’t miss our Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on 3 December, and your chance to ‘Meet Santa on 10 December. This year, the jolly old man’s visit will be combined with a fullday carnival featuring workshops and a Christmas bazaar. What fun! Lastly, a gentle reminder regarding etiquette in the Club’s dining and sports areas. Kindly wear appropriate clothing out of respect for other Members’ rights to enjoy the facilities, too.

As we get into the spirit of Yuletide, do join in the many activities the Club has to offer.

May I take this opportunity to wish all Members and their families, our Committee and my work colleagues a fantastic couple of months ahead, a blessed holiday season and a healthy entry to 2018. Season’s Greetings – and see you at the Club!

Greetings

from the Ambassador of Switzerland Dear Members of the Swiss Club, Dear Readers of RELAX, 2017 marked the 50 years jubilee of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Singapore. Fifty years ago, Switzerland’s Federal Council decided to transform the Swiss Consulate in Singapore into an Embassy, recognising the importance of the young city-nation to Swiss interests in the region. The last 50 years saw a continual deepening and strengthening of our ties, to the point where nowadays Singapore is by far Switzerland’s most important trading partner in Southeast Asia. Furthermore, Singapore hosts the biggest Swiss community in any city in all of Asia, with roughly 5000 Swiss calling the Lion City their home. To commemorate these 50 years of growing partnership, the Embassy organised a whole range of festivities. We started out the year with an open-air concert by the talented Swiss-Singaporean pianist Rahel Senn in the Botanic Gardens. In March, the Council of States delegation (Ständerat, Conseil des Etats) led by its President Ivo Bischofberger, visited the Singapore Parliament and met with the Swiss Community at the Swiss Club. The Embassy also published a postcard booklet, depicting some of the highlights of the Swiss presence in Singapore. In April, Switzerland’s Finance Minister and Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer led a high-ranking financial delegation to Singapore, while in June, Defence Minister and Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin attended the important Shangri-La Security Dialogue and made a bilateral visit to his Singaporean colleague.

10

Other highlights were the SwitzerlandSingapore Football Festival for boys and girls, which took centre-stage on the iconic Float@Marina platform. In July/August we organised three weeks of Switzerland-inspired exhibitions on tourism, sports and watches in Paragon on Orchard Road. While the official reception on 1 August for the Singapore authorities and the Diplomatic Corps was held at the Swiss Residence, the traditional National Day celebrations of the Swiss Community had its usual perfect stage on the beautiful Saturday night of 5 August at the Swiss Club. In October, we brought the ongoing photo exhibition ‘Humanity’s Greening of Planet Earth’ by Swiss photographer Mario Del Curto to Gardens by the Bay. This exhibition runs until 12 November. And to close the year on a festive note, we host our traditional Swiss Santa Claus family event together with the Swiss Association Singapore (SAS) at the Swiss Residence on Sunday 10 December. By that time, 2018 will already be knocking at our front door. We look forward to keeping in touch with you through our website (www.eda.admin.ch/singapore), Facebook (/swissembassysingapore), RELAX magazine and most importantly, in person. My spouse Fiorella and I, together with all the Embassy staff, wish you and your families happy holidays and a successful start to 2018.

An ancient grape variety, a cross between Moscato and Catarratto, results in a wine with a concentrated and complex aroma. Cultivated at Regaleali on the hills next to Case Vecchie Tasca d'Almerita Grillo, it offers a broad range of bright fruit aromas from crisp citrus to white peach with an elegant backbone of minerality.

Made from a selection of Nero d’Avola grapes cultivated on the high hills of Sicily, this wine expresses the primary aromas, without excess from the ripening process. Different age barriques provide soft and elegant tannins, with subtle hints of wood.

Great Times f r Tennis! September and October saw intensive activity on the courts – and it looks like the next two months will be just as busy. THE GOOD FIGHT In September and October, we saw Swiss Club teams playing and fighting hard all over Singapore. Four ladies’ teams, a men’s team and five junior teams gave their everything on the court. You know who you are – your coaches and teammates are proud of you! LADIES’ AND KIDS’ CAMPS For the first time ever, we organised a Ladies’ Camp – and what a blast we had! Intensive training and lots of laughs brought everyone together and visibly lifted the girls’ games. We also conducted another successful Kids’ Tennis Camp in October. JUBILANT JUNIOR TOURNAMENT In September, over 40 kids took part in the 3rd Junior Tournament of the year. Playing singles across various age groups, all the kids enjoyed multiple matches and for some, this was their first taste of tournament play. Day 1 had some early rain, but not enough to dampen the spirits of the players, who treated us to many tight and exciting matches. Day 2 saw the level of play rise as the kids became comfortable with the conditions and took control of their

Ignite Your Senses with Indoor Cycling

Please refer to the newsletter and website for the latest class timings.

Spinning, as it was once known many years ago, is an indoor cycling class that allows you to push your body to its limits and increase your endurance. Set to music, it’s designed to inspire you to push yourself harder at each lesson.

STAYING FIT The Club offers various fitness avenues, and a big attraction for a lot of Members on a regular basis is the Swiss Club Fitness Centre. Every day, Members get their fitness fix to keep themselves in great shape, stay mobile and agile, and to reach milestones on their fitness journey.

MOVING WITH THE TIMES The indoor cycling class was designed in the 90s and has since evolved with the times. With popular indoor cycling studios such as Soul Cycle in the US, the type of class has changed greatly over the years.

While many compare working out in the gym to ‘torture’, this word is far from the truth for countless others who enjoy their weekly bouts of training. For example, take this gentleman who flew in from Maldives through the night (on work not pleasure) and made it straight to the gym on a SATURDAY morning with bag in tow.

RHYTHM AND ENDURANCE CYCLING A much-upgraded version of the initial spin class, rhythm and endurance spin cycling is the newest sports offering at the Club. The class is set in a dark room with lights and music that create an experiential effect. The class is designed to move to the music and the lights create an atmosphere that’ll inspire you to keep attending each class.

Now that’s dedication – and if it was torture, he would not have been there. If you would like to stay fit or need any help, do get in touch with us for personal training or group fitness services.

DANCE YOUR WAY TO A SHAPELIER, SEXIER YOU The class incorporates upper body movements and weighted movements to give it a more holistic approach to targeting as many muscle groups as possible. EVENTS

Possibly The Best

Ev er The biggest party of the year kicked off on Wednesday 20 September and wound down on Sunday 24 September. We’re talking about none other than the legendary Oktoberfest at the Swiss Club. Graced with a special guest appearance by Austrian folk-rock sensation Andreas Gabalier on Thursday and Saturday night, it may just have been the best Oktoberfest ever. 8pm, after the traditional breaking of the barrel. Regular Oktoberfest-goers were delighted to welcome back the awesome 10-piece Musikkapelle Partenkirchen, performing at the Swiss Club’s Oktoberfest for the eighteenth consecutive year!

NOT JUST FOR GERMANS Arguably the most wonderful aspect of the Swiss Club’s Oktoberfest is its spirit of inclusiveness. From the first evening onwards, it was wonderful to see revellers from every nationality imaginable letting their hair down and simply having fun. The German Ambassador to Singapore, Dr Ulrich A. Sante, summed up the sentiments of many when he said, “I’m fascinated to see such a lively part of Germany in Singapore – a great city with a great Oktoberfest!” MUSIC AND MERRIMENT On Saturday night, when Oktoberfest traditionally reaches the height of boisterous Bavarian-bacchanalian revelry, the band started up just after 26

The first half of the evening’s programme comprised traditional Bavarian and Tyrolean folk music. After the few game couples hit the dance floor, the trickle soon swelled to a flood. Authentic Schuhplattling moves and grooves shared the spotlight with old school rock ‘n’ roll and free-form jigging around.

Two particularly sporting British gents, both named Rob (Aarvold and Hewitson respectively), put on a floor show of their own in their ‘Morph Suits’, eye-catching inflatable fat suits that forced their arms into permanently outstretched positions (making imbibing beer a challenging undertaking).

After an hour or so, the band switched it up and played a series of rousing rock anthems including classic like ‘Living Next Door to Alice’, YMCA’, ‘I Will Survive’ and ‘Dancing Queen’. For many, the years melted away, as 40-somethings, 50-somethings and sprightly 60-somethings channelled their youthful heydays.

AND HERE’S ANDREAS… With much fanfare, at around 10pm, the much-anticipated Austrian singing sensation Andreas Gabalier took to the stage. To coin a cliché, the crowd went wild! Clad in quad-hugging lederhosen and sporting sunglasses, Andreas squeezed an amazing range out of his gigantic piano accordion and belted out hits like ‘Mountain Man’ and ‘Volks Rock ‘n’ Roller’. His energetic antics and undeniable machismo were much appreciated by the very vocal ladies in the crowd. When the screaming subsided and

...Possibly The Best Oktoberfest Ever SUNDAY, FAMILY FUN DAY! After the hardcore drinking and dancing of Saturday night, Sunday’s family day was a relatively sober affair. That said, the tent was awash with the cuteness of flaxen-haired children decked out in dainty dirndls and lederhosen. The title of youngest Oktoberfest reveller went to an adorable little man named Theo Strasser. He obligingly posed in the arms of his lovely Korean mum Tiyeong, while his camera-shy German dad Patrick looked proudly on.

Andreas had slaked his thirst with a mug of ice cold beer, we asked him to share his impressions of Singapore’s Oktoberfest. With a big sexy smile, he said that it reminded him of his roots. “Playing in a tent reminds me of the start of my career. It’s like starting again!”

28

As per tradition, the day culminated in a magic show, performed by Singapore’s Magician of the Year in 2014, Casey Lee. He dazzled the audience with his sleight-of-hand, conjuring money out of thin air and generally bamboozling his wide-eyed audience. IT WAS‌ MAGIC! The real magic of the day, however, was the air of enchantment that hovered over the full 5-day event, uniting thousands of people from all walks of life and countries of origin, embracing the spirit of a centuriesold tradition a hemisphere away from where it all began.

You’re off to kick a ball around and you see this scaly creature entangled in the goal post? Oh... the questions in your head! Early this year, ACRES received a call about Neymar, a sunda pangolin, balled up in the net. Their scaly bodies protect them from predators but the grooves got snagged on on the ropes. Luckily, a member of public noticed poor Neymar’s crisis and called our 24-hour wildlife rescue hotline for help. It took a while for our rescue volunteers to free Neymar but he appeared in good condition and was released back into the wild where he belongs.

Neymar is just a one of the many wildlife who needed help. At ACRES, our aim is to end to animal cruelty in Asia. We have rescued and relocated more than 10,000 injured, orphaned or displaced animals to date. This is just a fraction of our work. Majority of widespread animal abuse and exploitation continues because of the lack of awareness, and that is where our Humane Education programmes seeks to empower people with knowledge while working alongside governmental agencies to nurture a responsible society from grassroots level. We strongly believe in ending animal cruelty by tackling the root causes. You can be a part of this change!

‘Lost’ Children, Stolen Bananas and the

Art of Creative

Teaching Marie-Thérèse Splett-Sialm, the ‘mother’ of the Swiss School in Singapore, was in Singapore recently for the massive undertaking of chronicling and digitising 50 years’ worth of memorabilia. We spoke with this incredible lady.

BACK TO THE BEGINNING

A beautiful, bright-eyed lady with an energy that belied her 75 years, Marie-Thérèse spoke with fondness and vivid clarity about the early days of the Swiss School. She recalled that school started with just eight students in kindergarten and 11 in primary school. Class numbers swelled and the first year ended with 40 students. When asked about the challenges she faced, she said, “The challenge was to open a school from the very beginning, with nothing. Children came from different schools and we had to form a community, a family. We founded the school with the children, incorporating their ideas as well as ours.” Marie-Thérèse laughingly remembered how she panicked when children went ‘missing’ on the first day of school. Within minutes, they were located wandering down a path, just a short distance from the edge of the jungle. She recalled that nature and human nature were constantly interacting. Scorpions, snakes, monkeys and birds, which cheekily mimicked her speech, were frequent visitors to their open-air classrooms.

FROM SWITZERLAND TO SINGAPORE TO CHILE, WITH LOVE

In preparation of the opening of the Swiss School in Singapore, Marie-Thérèse and her first husband, co-founder of the school Werner Kaufmann-Sialm, studied the syllabuses of all 26 cantons in Switzerland. Weaving in the best practices of the Swiss syllabuses, and drawing on their 32

own teaching specialties of music and art in the case of Marie-Thérèse, and sports in the case of Werner, they developed a syllabus that openly sought to develop creativity.

she introduced the students to the traditional art of their culture. Under her tutelage, the children blossomed. Her successful methodology was observed by a professor from the University of Santiago, and incorporated into the syllabus of the teachers’ training college in Chile.

AWESOME ALUMNI

Always look for a master – someone who is better than you, someone you can learn from. Marie-Thérèse “This creative focus united the children. Art starts conversations, and drama brings children out of themselves,” she recalled. This creative approach was applied to her last official teaching appointment in a school in a small village near Winthertur, where she overcame the skepticism of her detractors and created a truly different school where all the different classes worked on one subject together, from kindergarten to upper primary school. The system is still in place today. After her retirement, Marie-Thérèse volunteered to teach in a less-privileged school in Chile in 2008. Ironically,

Several of Marie-Thérèse’s students recently attended the jubilee celebrations at the Swiss School. When asked if she was privy to the paths their adult lives had taken, she proudly recited a litany of achievements. One is the founder of a Montessori school in Switzerland, another is the director of a large prison in Switzerland, and another works tirelessly with the Red Cross.

A MESSAGE TO THE STUDENTS OF TODAY

When asked to convey a personal message to the students of today, Marie-Thérèse offered this heartfelt advice. “Always look for a master – someone who is better than you, someone you can learn from,” said Marie-Thérèse. “And never feel small.” At the end of our chat, Marie-Thérèse showed us the enormous tree that the Swiss School had first planted in 1968, when the new school building was officially opened. It was lovingly transplanted a decade later, in the inner courtyard of the school, where its mighty branches stretch upwards like a giant hand. Marie-Thérèse sees it as a unifying symbol of the school itself. It is sheltering, yet inspiring, encouraging its students to reach for the sky.

NEWS FROM THE

Students Get a Move on with Parkour Lessons at SSiS At the Swiss School in Singapore, we are trying to provide more ways for our students to get outside and get moving. One of the ways we are doing this is through our Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) programmes and specifically our parkour programme.

FROM THE FRENCH MILITARY TO THE SWISS SCHOOL…

Parkour is a training discipline that was developed from military obstacle course training in France. This programme will allow the students to see the environment around them in a new way and to imagine the potential for navigating it. Among the movements that students will be learning to use are running, climbing, swinging, vaulting, and rolling.

This is the first time we have offered a parkour as an ECA, and the response to it has been amazing. We are working with an external company, Superfly Monkey Dragons, to offer the best quality ECA possible. Superfly Monkey Dragons have been teaching parkour classes in Singapore for five years now, and their instructors have a wealth of experience in this field.

SAFETY FIRST!

One of the most important components of this ECA is the safety of the students. During the ECA lesson, there are three instructors watching over the students. Each lesson starts with a review of the safety rules learned in previous lessons. The rule that is repeatedly emphasised is – if you are tired, don’t try it! After the safety review, a typical lesson continues with some warm-up stretches and running exercises. After the students are warmed up and ready to go, the instructors split them into smaller groups so that they can enjoy a more focused lesson.

… BECAUSE THE ENVIRONMENT IS MEANT FOR EXPLORING!

We really hope that the students enjoy this new variety of ECA that we are offering this semester. We believe that it is very important for students to be outside and actively moving around. From the popularity of this class, it seems that most of the students agree. Hopefully, after taking part in this ECA, our students will start to see the environment around them in a new way and will be encouraged to get out and explore more. Max Isenbeck, Primary 4 student, shared with us what he thought of the parkour lessons. “It is hard now, but t will be really fun when I learn how to do more,” said Max.

In 2011 they arrived with the intention of staying much longer. “We always felt attracted towards Asia. In fact, we met in a Japanese language course at our high-school in 1993, and the rest it history,” recalled Wiebke fondly.

THEIR ‘HOTEL CALIFORNIA’ When asked to recall her fondest memories of Club life, Wiebke mentioned the many birthday parties celebrated at the Club over the past ten years. “Memories created at the Club are also always fondly remembered by friends that have long left Singapore,” reflected Wiebke. “It is a bit like Hotel California – you can check-in anytime you like, but you can never leave!” said Wiebke with a gentle chuckle. We hope you never leave the Swiss Club, Wiebke and family!

The interview was a short one, as duty called. As we were leaving Arbenz, we noticed Rave’s eagle eye zoom in on a tiny stain on a cover over one of the chairs. He removed it himself and summoned a staff member to replace it. We could clearly see that this passionate professional is married to his job for the long term.
