On behalf of the Editorial team of ‘RELAX’, I wish you a happy, healthy and successful New Year, filled with many meaningful and magical moments at the Swiss Club. Thank you for reading ‘RELAX’ and reliving the good times documented in its pages of post-event coverage. Thank you, too, for planning your social lives around the activities and dining promotions lined up by the tireless and creative Committee and Management. I hope you continue to find the magazine a useful source of information and, as its name suggests, relaxation. How nice to lounge by the pool with a long cool drink in hand and flip through its pages at leisure… As Editor of ‘RELAX’ for just four issues, I have had the pleasure of attending several of your events – your stirring Swiss National Day celebrations, the awesome Oktoberfest and the heart-warming ‘Meet Santa’ among them. As an observant bystander, I have been struck by the incredible feeling of sincerity and warmth that pervades them all. Most of you have families, as do I. How lucky we are, as there is nothing more important in life, in my opinion. But as Members of the Swiss Club, you are part of a larger, extended family. I can only imagine the sense of belonging that must envelop you as you enter the grounds, be it for sports or dining or just chilling with friends. Even as a humble vendor, I have been embraced by Members, Managers and Staff Members, who are unfailingly warm, helpful, courteous and at times forgiving. Thank you all for the privilege of being part of your Club. That’s enough of my sentimental ramblings – there is a whole calendar year waiting to unfold, and a Chinese New Year waiting to be ushered in. Inside this issue of ‘RELAX’, relive the spooky spectacular of last year’s Halloween Party, the innocent wonderment of ‘Meet Santa’, and highlights of sporting events in water and on land, from swimming to padel. You can also check out your (unofficial and by no means conclusive) horoscope according to the Chinese zodiac, and find out what your drink of choice supposedly reveals about you in our fun article entitled ‘Tipple Tales’, complete with revealing contributions by Committee Members and Management. A special note of congratulations to Max Regamey, for completing the activities in Kids’ Space and winning the mystery prize awarded for the first correct entry drawn. Thanks, Max, for your efforts. And to all of you incredibly smart kids out there, remember – you’ve got to be in it to win it, so head for Kids’ Space on Page 37 and tackle the fun puzzles. Here’s to a great year ahead! Yours sincerely,

SWISS CLUB YOUR SAY
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT AT THE SWISS CLUB Dear Paulina, Thank you again for all your help in making the event a success. I really appreciated the help Ravi provided too. The feedback from the participants was very positive about the location and the quality of the food. I found the guest-room to be excellent too. Kind regards, Robert Harris Director and Senior Instructor Dr. Vodder School – International
HIGH PRAISE FOR HALLOWEEN Dear Swiss Club Team, Thank you very much for the horribly spooky, tasty buffet last Saturday. It was not our first time spending Halloween at the Swiss Club with our family and friends, but last Saturday was the best time. Not only did our little monsters enjoy all the surprises you prepared for them, despite the heavy rain that evening, but the whole atmosphere you created was great. We really loved the originality of the buffet, which followed the theme perfectly without compromising the quality of the food. It was exactly what we were looking for – originality, tastiness, quality and surprises! In particular, the desserts were tremendously horrible. We loved the almond fingers, spooky cupcakes and chocolate. We are now looking forward to Christmas, CNY and Easter at the Swiss Club with more surprises.
Hi Carsten, We had a great Halloween Night. The team did a fantastic job. Great costumes, scary faces, the decoration – everything was perfect. The commitment of the staff is impressive! Thanks to everyone! Kind regards, Patrick Regamey
Again, thank you for your great work and huge effort. Benedicte (from the ‘banana family’) Happy SC Member 243

SWISS CLUB
A WORD FROM THE COMMITTEE also approved action plans, incentives and promotional plans, which are now being implemented by our management team and staff. We are confident that we are on a positive path towards shaping the future of the Swiss Club.
Dear Fellow Members, Happy New Year to all of you! The Committee wishes you a great start to a successful and healthy 2016. The Chinese New Year on 8 and 9 February will greet the Red (Fire) Monkey and bid farewell to the Wooden Goat with the traditional Lion Dance on 20 February. We hope to see many of you join in the various events and activities that the Club has lined up, and enjoy the promotions offered by our F&B department throughout the coming year. These include the Italian promotion at the Arbenz in January, a weekend special with dinner and a stay at The Guesthouse for this year’s Valentine’s Day on 14 February, and a revival of the very successful Fair@The Swiss Club combined with an Open Day come April, to name just a few. You might remember that the Committee met for a strategy meeting in late 2014 where we discussed vision, strengths and weaknesses, goals and challenges of the Swiss Club, and identified factors instrumental in our vision to be your number one choice of club. In November and December 2015, there were follow-up meetings with the Committee and selected staff members, where we discussed marketing and strategy tools. In particular, we focused on changing markets, finances and dwindling membership numbers. We

We have also heard from you that you would like to bring your friends and guests to the smaller classes offered, such as the Boot Camp, Pilates, Yoga, Aerobics. From now on you will have the opportunity to invite them, and as they do not pay a monthly membership fee they will pay a 20% surcharge on the services used, chargeable to your membership account. This offer does not apply to tennis and padel classes, the swimming programme and personal training, as these classes are already very well attended by our members. We hope that this will be a great incentive for your friends to experience the lush surroundings and fine facilities of the Club – and who knows, they might want to join the Club at a later stage. You will be delighted to see that our beautiful leisure pool has been upgraded with a fresh paint job and a new filter system, to deliver better water quality with less chlorine – all due for completion by 22 January. With the opening of the Downtown MRT line at the end of 2015, please note that the Committee and Management are reviewing extending the Swiss Club bus services to include MRT stops along Dunearn Road, to assist you and your fellow guests with transport options when visiting or departing the Club. We will update you once the review is finalised. Towards the end of last year, our Housekeeping Manager Jane Chua and our F&B manager Wong Yun Kai left the Club to embrace new challenges. We wish them all the best for their future careers and thank both for their valuable contributions. As mentioned by my fellow Committee colleague Susanna Ruegger Koechli in a previous issue of ‘RELAX’, the Swiss
Club is always looking for new people to join the Committee or become part of a Sub-Committee to share their expertise for the benefits of our beautiful Club. Please note that you don’t have to be Swiss to become a member of the Committee. Everybody is welcome!
We are confident that we are on a positive path towards shaping the future of the Swiss Club. Although times are not always easy and changes are sometimes necessary, rest assured that we want to keep the Swiss Club the ‘first choice’ club it is, and aim to retain or upgrade the services we offer and even widen the choices already available. We wish you and your loved ones a happy new year ahead and, in accordance with the qualities of the Red Monkey, an optimistic, enthusiastic, ambitious and adventurous 2016!

SWISS CLUB
A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members, Welcome ‘home’ and welcome back to the Swiss Club. I hope you all had a fulfilling Christmas with family and friends, enjoying the Yuletide magic and the many enjoyable moments it always brings. If you have a fun Christmas story or went on an exciting adventure, do share it with us. The ‘RELAX’ Team would be delighted to feature stories and pictures in our coming issues. We had a busy December with lots of activities. Thank you to all those Members who participated in the various events, dined in our restaurants and hosted functions, either personal or corporate. The Club performs at its optimum when all Members support it, and the premises are ‘alive and buzzing’. We are at your service and always happy to hear from you. Do feel free to talk or write to me, or any of our team members, so we can make the Swiss Club an even better place to be.
The Club feels and performs at its optimum when all Members support it, and the premises are ‘alive and buzzing’. Over the past months the Committee and Management have discussed strategy, marketing and other Clubrelated issues. It is important to reflect on past successes, yet more meaningful to explore things that lead to overall
improvements so that the Swiss Club remains a great club now and in the years to come. A few strategic changes will soon be implemented. We have for some time noticed a number of non-members using the Club’s facilities without necessarily being invited or introduced by a Member as stipulated in our rules. It goes without saying this is an unacceptable situation and needs to stop. It undermines our Members’ privacy, compromises our services and devalues our membership and its benefits. To safeguard your privileges and ensure exclusivity, may we kindly remind all Members to remember to bring and use your membership card when at the Club. This is primarily for Member identification, and secondly due to the fact that all other modes of payment will be made obsolete in the coming month. With changes and ongoing tweaks, the Swiss Club will continue to be a fantastic social and recreational venue for you and your family. As you may have seen or heard, we are awaiting the opening of our new Spa and Hair Salon, which will be operated by a renowned service provider. We look forward to your feedback. The pool is in its final stage of getting a ‘facelift’, which will hopefully make weekends even more fun. Recently, the opening of the mini-tennis court has proven a great addition for kids learning tennis. As usual, the food and beverage calendar is packed with exciting promotions and many enticing spreads. Do not forget to book for your ‘Valentine’, and come and celebrate the Year of the Monkey at our reunion dinner.
On behalf of the Swiss Club, I wish all Members continued success in 2016, and a prosperous Chinese New Year. See you at the Club.
Carsten Kjeldmann General Manager carsten.kjeldmann@swissclub.org.sg
APOLOGY In November/December issue of ‘RELAX’, the article on Page 28 headed ‘Congress of the Swiss Living Abroad 2015’ was wrongly credited to Rashne Athayde and Christian Heusser. It should have been credited to Sabine Silberstein. Sincere apologies to all parties involved. Every effort will be made to ensure that no such errors occur in the future.

tales WHAT YOUR FAVOURITE DRINK SAYS ABOUT YOU It is said that alcohol is ‘truth serum’, but not in the way you might think. Many bartenders, wine makers, marketers and social anthropologists have claimed there is a correlation between alcoholic preference and personality. Read on and see what you sip lets slip about you. Needless to say, take it all with a pinch of salt – be it on a pretzel, peanut, or your bar snack of choice…
10
BEER
You’re working class, down-to-earth, in touch with the common man. And if you’re not working class, you’re unpretentious and egalitarian, and probably so successful that you’re way beyond the point of caring what people think about you at all. If you’re a woman, you’re ‘one of the boys’. Guys like gals who can handle a beer or three – and we don’t mean buxom serving wenches wielding bottles on trays (though they tend to like those, too, last time we checked).
CRAFT BEER
A sub-set of beer, craft beers, artisanal brews and the products of microbreweries are the drink of hipsters. Wipe that froth from your beard, dude, and don’t dribble on your plaid shirt. Then again, maybe you’re just a regular guy exploring your drinking options… Don’t let labels stick, and enjoy your gustatory adventures.
LIGHT BEER
You were once a wild man, now tamed (by your concerned wife or killjoy GP who has cautioned you against the perils of obesity). Or you’re a calorie-conscious lady who genuinely enjoys a refreshing ice-cold lager on a hot afternoon. Look on the bright side – the lighter the beer, the more you can drink!
SWISS CLUB
RED WINE
‘In vino veritas’ – in wine, truth. Shiraz drinkers tend to be big, bold and unsubtle life-of-the-party types. They are unlikely to be vegans. Cabernet sauvignon characters tend to be more complex personalities, observant and analytical. They are likely to be successful entrepreneurs or in Senior Management positions. Pinot noir drinkers are probably perfectionists, always striving for balance and easily bored by small talk. However, they will climb inside a topic and endlessly converse on topics that interest them.
WHITE WINE
Chardonnay tends to be favoured by big personalities who dominate a conversation with entertaining stories of (probably) Chardonnayfuelled indiscretions. Sauvignon Blanc drinkers, on the other hand, tend to be more introverted and intellectual, and enjoy listening and analysing rather than spilling indiscretions. Riesling drinkers are pleasant, mild-mannered and diplomatic – always a safe bet on any guest list.
CHAMPAGNE
If you drink champagne regularly, as opposed to occasionally, you are one of those people so important that nobody knows who the hell you are on account of the low profile you are forced to maintain for security reasons. If you drink it occasionally, you’re just like the rest of us. If you strictly insist on the real thing, produced in the province of Champagne as opposed to generic bubbly, you’re an individual of discerning taste with lots of disposable cash – and probably French.
CIDER
You’re a Brit or an Anglophile. Or a lady who prefers her juice with bubbles and a kick.
WHISKEY
Posh but unpretentious, you appreciate quality in every aspect of your life. There is a high chance you work in finance or in the legal profession.
BOURBON
A serious drinker, you have an unhealthy disrespect for your liver. You may be a former rocker or roadie.
TEQUILA
You’re a hard-core party animal, of college age or stuck in a time warp (where, in the empire of your imagination, you are still of college age). It’s going to get messy.
RUM
Move over, Jack Sparrow. You’re a pirate waiting to set sail on a big adventure.
GIN
You’re an intellectual. Or a lady. If you insist on the best, as opposed to the cheapest bottle you can pick up in the duty-free store, you relish the herbal complexities in your glass as well as the upward swing in your mood. Then again, some believe that gin makes you melancholy, so you may also be nursing a broken heart or drowning in some other (hopefully fleeting) sorrow.
VODKA
Chances are, you’re sophisticated, especially if you pair your vodka with tonic. If you pair your vodka with orange juice or lemonade, you probably have an immature palate or you’ve just come of legal drinking age. As per gin, if you go for top-shelf labels you are an individual who covets and values quality in all aspects of life.
COCKTAILS
You’re frilly, fluffy and fun. Those little paper parasols, fruity garnishes and pretty colours – what’s not to like? Guys who cradle cocktails are either in touch with their feminine sides, or man enough not to care what others think about their drink of choice. The other possibility is that you simply don’t like the taste of alcohol, which is what all those syrups, juices and muddled herbs and fruits aim to disguise.
SWISS CLUB DRINKERS SPILL ALL We asked around and here’s what we found out about some of our Members’ and Managers’ drinking inclinations. Susanna Rueegger Koechli, Committee Member, likes to drink… WHAT: Gunner (cocktail) WHY: “It’s not very alcoholic, but I love this drink. It is super-refreshing, thirst-quenching, sweet and a bit bitter at the same time – so many tastes in one sip!” WHERE AND WHEN: At the Jungle Bar at the Swiss Club, usually Saturday lunch-time or morning, when it is really hot Martin Silberstein, Committee Member, likes to drink… WHAT: Red wine WHY: “It is just great to relax with a wonderful glass of wine…” WHERE AND WHEN: At home or in restaurants, preferably with a nice dinner Patrick Regamey, Committee Member, likes to drink… WHAT: Mojito WHY: “The combination of rum, mint and lime – marvellous!” WHERE AND WHEN: Patrick fondly recalls his first one in 1999 in Havana, and many thereafter… Max Schweizer, Committee Member, likes to drink… WHAT: Beer WHY: “The freshness of an ice-cold beer is unbeatable.” WHERE AND WHEN: Anytime, anywhere, so long as it’s in good company Adrian Vogt, Executive Chef/F&B Manager, likes to drink… WHAT: Paulaner Weissbier WHY: “I enjoy its refreshing, hearty, rich flavours.” WHERE AND WHEN: At his friend’s bar, Leopold, at 96 Tanjong Pagar Road Christelle Taillens, Marketing Manager, likes to drink… WHAT: Mojito, Lychee Martini, Baileys WHY: “I like the first two because they are easy to sip and slurp over an extended period of time without making you too tipsy. If I crave a refreshing drink, I will almost always fall back on my beloved Mojito. If I really want to relax and get a little tipsy (*wink*), I’ll go for Baileys.” WHEN AND WHERE: Baileys – at home; Mojitos and Lychee Martinis – in pubs and clubs Markus and Agnes Ritter, Committee Member and Partner, like to drink… WHAT: Gin tonic with fresh lime juice WHY: “It’s refreshing, not sweet and ideal for the tropical heat of Singapore.” WHERE AND WHEN: At home

• Dornfelder&Blauer Portugieser # 2 • Gewürztraminer Dry, # 37 (Berlin Gold Medal)
When:
1 January – 29 February
How much:
Bottle $70 Glass $12
Tasting Notes From the first moment, the Dornfelder & Blauer Portugieser knows how to seduce. With dark ruby, velvet colour in the glass, the wine anticipates the great, elegant taste that will follow. Due to less dominant tannin, the presence of fruit is perceptible in this soft, full-bodied wine. The fruity scent of wild strawberries, blackcurrants and raspberries together a subtle smoky flavour round off this great wine. The full bouquet and powerful taste of this wonderful wine will harmonise well with strong flavours, moderately spicy foods, beef, dark and sweetish sauces. It is best enjoyed at 16-18 degrees C, and has an Alcoholic Volume of 12%.
Tasting Notes From the middle ages until the 19th century, the Gewürztraminer grape was widely planted in central and eastern Europe. Though it is frostresistant, it requires warm vineyard sites and soil with good drainage. It begins to ripen about the end of September. Gewürztraminer wines have a distinctive, pronounced bouquet of flavor, and are often compared with lychees or roses. Even when vinified dry, German Gewürztraminer is usually less austere than its Alsatian counterpart. However, this Gewürztraminer from Fischborn Bergesho vineyard is nicely dry and rounded. It goes well with fish, meats and Asian cuisine. Due to its un-oaked fermentation, it also pairs well with smoked foods as well. It is best enjoyed at 10-12 degrees C, and has an Alcoholic Volume of 9.5%

A Hellishly Good Time: The Swiss Club
It was unanimous. Last year’s Halloween party at Arbenz and the Rifle Lounge was the best one yet. Kudos to our sporting Members who channelled their inner freaks and donned hair-raising costumes. FRIGHTS AND DELIGHTS FOR ‘THE LITTLE HORRORS’ The party was packed with a full programme of fiendishly fun themed activities for the kids. Face painting, communing with the dead in a designated ‘graveyard corner’, a search for hidden eyeballs, a cannibalistic photo-contest requiring photographic evidence of the body parts consumed (decapitated heads, dismembered head and intestines included), and an everpopular piñata kept the ‘the little horrors’ happily occupied. While it’s hard to single out the highlights of such a great party, credit should go to the staff members who played a pack of zombies to perfection, amusing the kids and terrifying the adults. In particular, Eden played her part like an Academy award-winning actress. On the other hand, Serene temporarily fell out of character when she emitted a blood-curdling scream while being pursued by ‘body parts’ brandished by the children. How the sweet little freaks loved to see Serene scream!

How the sweet little freaks loved to see Serene scream! DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS COSTUMES The concerted effort of the guests to don fancy dress was truly commendable. The event was graced by ‘The Adams Family’, assorted witches and wizards, mummies, vampires, pumpkin men and even a ‘banana’ who made a cameo appearance in the ‘zombie club’. Thanks to all who attended and entered the ‘spirit’ of the occasion. We look forward to an equally happening Halloween party this year. Though last year’s is a hard act to follow, we pledge to top it – or be damned!

The Sunday
Santa
Came to the Swiss Club At 3pm on Sunday 7 December, the carollers sang on and the anticipation built as Santa’s arrival was slightly delayed by a traffic jam in the sky due to heavy cloud cover. However, it was well worth the wait. Every boy and girl was overcome with the joy of Christmas, not to mention thrilled with the gifts efficiently delivered by Santa and his trusty elf. A GRAND ENTRANCE IN A STAND-IN SLEIGH When Christelle announced that Santa was running late due to aerial traffic congestion, the understanding audience readily accepted the explanation and enjoyed the extended performance of the NTU Hall of Residence 11 Acapella choir, who sang all the traditional favourites in pitch-perfect harmony, from ‘Silent Night’ to ‘Jingle Bell Rock’. It later emerged that vigilant staff at the Guardhouse had detained Santa for a few minutes for security purposes, and Rudolph was forced to wait for his master outside the premises (in observance of the ‘No Pets Allowed’ signage). The anticipation built, and the children waited patiently… then all of a sudden Santa rocked up in a club car! FROM THE NORTH POLE… TO THE PAVILION Santa was happy to be whisked inside to the air-conditioned comfort of the Pavilion. He was overhead remarking, “It’s very hot here.” After all, he had travelled a very long way from much colder climes. The wide-eyed children congregated around Santa and sat obediently at his feet, as he consulted his book. Suddenly a booming sound issued from the microphone, and the quick-witted old man assured the audience that it was not his tummy rumbling. Then came the moment of truth. “Your names are all in here if you’ve been good 18
girls and boys,” said Santa, holding a thick book aloft. Then came a chorus of names called out by enthusiastic boys and girls, clearly confident of their unblemished records of good behaviour.
Mid-way through proceedings, Santa had a short break and the choir resumed singing carols. Many ‘little angels’ could be seen mouthing the lyrics to their favourite festive songs.
When cheeky Santa floated the idea of a nap before the present distribution, the children vocally protested. Santa relented, and got down to business.
Meanwhile, a sumptuous spread was laid out by Chef Adrian and his team. It included yummy delicacies such as Glazed Orange Honey Ham, Garlic Mashed Potato, Beef Stew, Baked Penne and Cheese, Sausages, Meatball Pops with Tomato Sauce, and the hugely popular Chocolate Fountain with Fruits and Marshmallows. Many little ones could be seen sporting chocolate moustaches that kept reappearing with every repeat visit to the Fountain, despite their parents’ best efforts with paper napkins and wet wipes.
GIFTS AND GOODIES GALORE One by one, Santa patiently called out the name of every child in his book – a total of more than 40 very nice children. Somehow, he seemed to know everything about every one of them. Santa knew, for instance, who had just learned to ride a bicycle, who was and wasn’t eating their greens, who was and wasn’t helping mum with the dishes, who was planning to give up their pacifier, and so on... Then again, he is no mere mortal – he is Santa. It certainly proved to the children assembled that nothing escapes the wise old man. The crowd was immensely entertained by Santa’s banter and the children’s interaction. When Santa asked 4-yearold Australian Member Austin, “Do you play Australian soccer or rugby?”, Austin promptly replied, “Singapore soccer!” Then when young Esperanza confessed to having trouble rising early, Santa replied: “You don’t like to get up in the morning, hey? Just like Santa – I barely made it here!”
IT’S A WRAP The rest of the afternoon was a whirlwind of gift-giving and unwrapping, outstanding performances from poem recitals to songs, and the presentation of thoughtful gifts of original artwork to Santa, who was clearly delighted by the children’s show of talent and generosity. After a flurry of final photo-taking, Santa was whisked away on his sleigh-onwheels, to collect Rudolph who had been patiently waiting at the Guardhouse throughout the proceedings. Nobody will ever forget the Sunday Santa came to the Swiss Club. It was a magical afternoon indeed.

Discovering Your Hidden Talent The Ultimate Christmas Gift:
While Making Something Beautiful
The Christmas Decoration Workshops, helmed by our talented Member Niar Jacklowsky on 24 and 26 November, were a source of fascination, education and self-congratulation for all participants. Everybody was impressed by the fruits – or rather, pines, ferns and flowers – of their labours, and took home a lovely wreath that was no doubt admired by family and friends. RESPITE FROM THE COMPUTER SCREEN Enthusiastic participant Eleonore Taillens remarked, “It was a real treat to leave my office desk for two hours and immerse myself in a completely different world filled with aromatic pines, ferns and flowers.” All participants spoke of the satisfaction of creating something piece by piece, all by themselves (with a little guidance from

As all the Christmas Decoration Workshop participants can confirm, shop-bought decorations cannot compare to the priceless value of a handmade, all-natural work of art and labour of love.

Welcome the
Year of the Monkey with the Annual Lion Dance at the Swiss Club WHEN:
20 February 2016, from 11.30am
WHERE:
Club-wide, commencing at the Clubhouse
WHY:
Lion dances are held to usher in a Chinese New Year, and are typically performed on the premises of businesses and organisations for good luck in the year ahead
HOW:
Just turn up – no registration is necessary!
Did you know… A Chinese legend tells of a man-eating monster called ‘Nian’ (‘Year’) that used to terrorise the residents of a village on the eve of every Chinese New Year. One particular year, a god disguised as an old man told them that the monster was scared of the colour red and loud noises. That year, the villagers made a commotion by banging on their pots and pans, and hanging red signs on every door. Nian never troubled them again. The lion dance, with its loud banging on drums and crashing of cymbals, and its profusion of red, is designed to scare away evil spirits and monsters such as the banished Nian. 21

6TH ROUND AND YEAR-END TOURNAMENT
The 6th and final round of the Jass Tournament was held in the Rifle Lounge at the Swiss Club, on 27 November. Despite low numbers, the mood was distinctly festive and fiercely competitive. SURPRISE RESULTS Many of our regular players were unable to make it due to other events happening at the same time. Only 21 players, a handful of them first-timers, turned up for this yearend event. But what the evening lacked in numbers, it made up for in atmosphere. Flavio Monigatti, a first time-winner, grabbed the trophy with 3,136 points. Newbie Ivan Liembd scored 2169 and earned himself the loser tie. We hope that won’t deter him from joining Jass Tournaments in future. The evening’s scores didn’t include many matches. Unlike in the 5th round where 18 matches were played, this last round had half that amount.
QUEEN OF JASS And the overall winner of 2015 is… Brigitte Lichtenberger! A force to be reckoned with, she showed us who’s Queen of Jass with a total of 12,256 points. Trailing behind by a mere 65 points, Felix Mueggler came in second. Flavio, armed with a stunning finish in this last round, snuck into third place and Patrick Andreatta came in at fourth place. Chef Adrian prepared a sumptuous dinner as usual, and delightful Christmas cookies for everyone to bring home. We would like to thank our sponsors for making the evening possible. The Swiss Club, Huber’s Butchery, Bruno’s Best and LGT Bank generously contributed all the prizes.
It was a great evening to wrap up 2015. Many of you made it to every single round of Jass, and we thank you for all your support. Denise and I look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year.

THE TENNIS COURTS ARE CALLING… Festive Feasting Caught Up with You?
Chances are, you ate, drank and made merry over the Christmas break. Now it’s time to hit the tennis courts and get back into shape.
EXCITING END TO THE TENNIS YEAR It was a busy end to 2015 for Swiss Club tennis players and spectators. We hosted the Junior Swiss Club Championship and the Adult Doubles Tournament, as well as a friendly match between Tanglin Club and Swiss Club children.
DOUBLES LACKING IN NUMBERS BUT NOT IN AMBIENCE This year, the Doubles Tournament attracted 20 teams. However, we can surely reach 40 or 50 teams. So next tournament, come and play with us – the more the merrier!
JUBILANT JUNIORS We also organised a friendly Juniors match – Tanglin Club vs. Swiss Club, from 12pm to 4pm at Tanglin. A lot of matches were played, and the heat was intense. Thanks go to our host Tanglin Club. The ice-creams really hit the spot!
For the final Junior Tournament of 2015 we had 50 players – clearly a success! The courts saw great matches over the whole weekend, and the level of competition was definitely very good.
Despite the underwhelming numbers, the ambience was great. A spirit of good sportsmanship pervaded the whole weekend, which ended with an enjoyable dinner and lucky draw. We had a little incident in the first match after only 20 minutes of play, when a racket unfortunately slipped out of its owner’s hands and broke. Remember Christy ;-)
On behalf of the 40XV team, I wish you all the best for a top tennis-filled 2016!

Personal Journeys Fitness In last year’s January issue of ‘RELAX’ I wrote an article on getting fit for the new year of 2015. Many of us start the year on a high, with good intentions of getting into shape, learning something new, excelling at a sport, or just getting healthy.
No book and no website can compare with the value of a professional trainer.
COMMITMENT IS KEY TO ACHIEVEMENT We buy new sports gear and stock up on healthy foods , fully intending to achieve our health and fitness goals. However, after detecting very little improvement after just one or two months, many of us give up. We feel like we are going nowhere fast. Getting into shape requires a gradual lifestyle change that is sustainable. Over the past year we have worked with some Members who have worked consistently to attain their goals. Their achievements range from getting back into their ideal shape post-pregnancy, to getting into shape to have an easier pregnancy. Others lost weight to reclaim their ideal physique, while some packed on muscle to look their best. Still others worked hard to improve their sports performances. Two inspiring ‘success stories’ have kindly agreed to share their journeys with you. I AM CAROLINE BAUMANN… … and my story started about one year ago. After many attempts to get rid of my stubborn pregnancy weight gain, I wanted to try something different. So I fixed an appointment with Timothy. I was super-nervous, as my fitness level was at ground zero. Initially, I just wanted an introduction on how to use the machines in the gym. But immediately I realised how much more efficient my workout was with a professional instructor beside me. Hence I decided to sign up for personal training. Within a year I lost more than 15 kg, gained 26
I realised how much more efficient my workout was with a professional instructor beside me. self-confidence and really started to enjoy how my body was changing. Aside from great advice on exercise, I also received a lot of good advice about diet. I AM BENEDIKT EISINGER… … and half a year ago I was a clueless newbie who had just started working out. Then I started working together with the personal trainers at Swiss Club, Timothy and Jason. Because of my lack of experience, I was searching for workout plans on the Internet and bought various
books that demonstrated workouts. I found myself blindly doing the exercises in those books, and not questioning their relevance to my goals. Timothy and Jason helped me understand their deeper purpose and potential benefits, and showed me how to do them correctly. Furthermore the trainers at the Swiss Club aided me in understanding the importance of nutrition. No book and no website can compare with the value of a professional trainer. Considering that I was not able to make any real progress when training alone, I was astonished to see so many improvements in a short space of time. I am very happy with my progress and the coaching I still receive from Team Active Fitness, even though I now live in Germany. A Grand Finale for Swiss Sharks in Neptune League Round 5 On the morning of 22 November, the Swiss Club hosted the 5th round of the Neptune League, a friendly inter-Club league consisting of The Tanglin Torpedoes (Tanglin Club), Barracudas (British Club), The Dutch Dolphins (Hollandse Club), The Singapore Island Country Club and The Swiss Sharks (Swiss Club). Our very own Sharks wowed the crowd and topped the medal count.
SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST The Neptune League races are held five times a year at different venues. For the final round of the year, the honour fell upon the Swiss Club to organise the event. The morning started off with a little uncertainty regarding the weather, but luck was on our side and we ended up with perfect conditions. The participants arrived for their warmup session at 7.30am, and the races began at 8.30am sharp. We had a wonderful crowd of happy parents and nervous participants. Music played in the background, and there was an amazing atmosphere throughout the whole morning. UNITED AND TRIUMPHANT A total of 40 participants represent the Swiss Sharks. They impressed everyone by bringing home a total of 107 medals, consisting of 54 Gold medals, 35 Silver medals and 18 Bronze medals. In this particular round The Swiss Sharks put
in a fantastic performance and ranked top out of all five teams. Our team was very united, and everyone was cheering for their teammates. The Swiss Sharks ended the final Neptune League event of 2015 with fantastic results, and a great time was had by all. May this year’s Neptune League be equally enjoyable if not more so. Let’s get in the swim and win again! Article contributed by Chantal Windley, Head Coach of AquaDucks 27
New Year Greetings from the Swiss Ambassador
His Excellency Thomas Kupfer and his wife extend their well wishes for 2016, recap memorable events of the year past, and share some planned highlights of the year ahead. Dear Members of the Swiss Club in Singapore, and all readers of ‘RELAX’, As the end of the year 2015 has come to an end, my spouse Fiorella and I would like to extend our best wishes to all of you for a successful start into 2016. The year 2015 was not only the SG50 Jubilee, but also a year of many memorable events for Swiss-Singaporean relations. A highlight was the official visits of three Ministers from Switzerland, which underlined the strong ties between our two countries. In February, Minister for Finance, Federal Councillor Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf visited Minister for Finance Tharman and discussed topics of mutual interest in the field of finance and tax issues. Federal Councillor WidmerSchlumpf was also received by Singapore President Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam. The Swiss Business Community met with the Federal Councillor at a reception held at the Swiss Club together with the Swiss Business Association. In May, Foreign Minister Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter represented Switzerland for the first time at the 2015 Shangri-La Dialogue, the important Asia Security Summit. Federal Councillor Burkhalter also met Prime Minister Lee Hsieng Loong and Minister for Foreign Affairs K. Shanmugam to discuss various topics of our excellent bilateral relations. Finally, Minister for Infrastructure Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard paid an official visit in July. Federal Councillor Leuthard met with her Singaporean counterparts, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan (Environment), Mr Lui Tuck Yew (Transport) and Mr S. Iswaran (Energy) to discuss common concerns such as climate change, infrastructure development and Smart Cities. The concert of the Neues Zürcher Orchestra gave us the pleasure of listening to many young talents in the field of music. Another exciting moment was the screening of the film ‘Der Kreis’ by Stefan Haupt at the European Union Film Festival. Last but not least, we were happy to welcome our Swiss Santa Claus ‘Samichlaus’ at the Residence on 6 December, where Santa talked to more than 100 children who attended with their parents. This event is traditionally hosted at the Swiss Residence together with the Swiss Association in Singapore (SAS). The upcoming year promises to be as eventful and exciting as the last, as we are again expecting high-level political visitors in Singapore. Just to mention a few cultural events, there will be the annual Francophonie Festival and the Ambassador’s Football Cup taking place in spring, as well as a much-anticipated concert by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra at the Esplanade on 3 July. The Embassy looks forward to keeping the Swiss community informed about our upcoming activities through our website www.eda.admin.ch/countries/singapore/en/home.html and Facebook page www.facebook.com/swissembassysingapore as well as through the quarterly newsletter – and of course through ‘RELAX’. Best wishes, Thomas Kupfer Ambassador of Switzerland

A Gateway to a
New Life for the Fabry Family
New Swiss Club Members, Laurent and Alekha Fabry, converted their summer membership to an associate family membership in June. Already, it feels like home for this cosmopolitan French couple and their children, 13-year-old Charlotte and 10-year-old Alexandre. FROM AIRPORT TO ARBENZ Laurent, the 44-year-old Business Development Director for Asia at Tereos, the world’s third largest sugar group, was invited to dinner at Arbenz within a few hours of landing in Singapore in March. He loved it instantly. Coincidentally, he was reunited with a cousin he hadn’t seen for years, who happened to be a Member. At her suggestion, he stayed at The Guesthouse for several nights after his arrival, and relished its peace and quiet after a day in the CBD.
FROM FAMILY LIFE TO WILDLIFE As Laurent and Alekha were members of clubs in Paris and India, they were already sold on the club life. They immediately fell in love with the Swiss Club’s quaint colonial architecture and lush jungle setting, not to mention its excellent tennis and squash courts and relaxed, family atmosphere. Laurent was also enamoured of the wildlife, and fondly recalled his first sighting of a flying fox, “... like a phantom flying overhead”.
A CLUB OF THE WORLD Alekha was particularly attracted to the Club’s multi-cultural mix of Members, Management and Staff. “While roots are important for a sense of identity, children need to be aware that it is a multi-cultural world today, be it in a class or a club,” said Alekha. Today, the Club is a second home to the Fabry family. Laurent and Alekha play tennis on weekdays before dinner, Laurent plays squash on weekends, and they dine there frequently with friends.

NEWS FROM THE
‘Made Out of a Token’ The academic year 2015/16 began with P1 to P6 students taking part in two lessons a week for Portfolio work. The wonderful results reflected the enthusiasm of the students and the joy of independent learning.
ACTIVE AND INDEPENDENT LEARNING The main objective of project-based work is to strengthen active and independent learning, which is a key requirement for students’ future academic success. Interdisciplinary skills are becoming increasingly important in our fastchanging world, in which lifelong learning is now a necessity. Learning how to learn, and how to independently master one’s own ideas, is therefore an essential life skill. We support the students in learning how to plan, organise and present their projects with a clear, structured process that has been developed and successfully practised at SSiS over the last few years. In P5 and P6 classes, the ICT lessons are integrated into the Portfolio lessons as media competency forms an integral part of mastering projects. In P6, the Portfolio work is taught in English to familiarise
the students with project-based learning in English –the medium of instruction used at United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA), where most of our students will study from Secondary 1 onwards. AMAZING LEARNING JOURNEYS Each student was given a token to kickstart his or her project, and worked on the same project right up to the autumn break. Students eagerly embarked on their own creative adventures, supported by teachers’ guidance every step of the way, or whenever required. On Thursday 8 October 2015, we held our first Portfolio Exhibition at SSiS. Over 150 projects were on display. This tremendous feat was the result of a simple ‘token’ given to each student at the start of the project. On display were works depicting Roger Federer
playing tennis against Raphael Nadal, and a lighthouse set amidst a wonderful landscape. Other inventive projects enabled conversations with the creator of a comical robot, and provided viewers with interesting insights about human rights through the use of a megaphone. Many visitors took photographs of the exhibits, which clearly showed the abundance of not only care and competence, but also passion and attention to detail that went into their making. PRIDE IN WORKMANSHIP, JOY IN CREATIVITY The students were noticeably and rightfully proud of their projects on display. Since positive learning experiences involve emotions, it is essential that the children receive feedback on their completed products. At the Portfolio Exhibition, the students got a lot of positive comments from parents and other children. I am sure that they are now looking forward to planning, creating and working on their next project during the ongoing Portfolio lessons during in the academic year ahead. Congratulations to the students for a task well accomplished, and a big thank you to all the Teachers for their dedication in bringing this exhibition to life. Q&A THE KNOW-ALL
Singapore is a wonderful place that often induces wonder – as in, ‘I wonder what that’s all about…’ Here, we attempt to enlighten you on some of the local peculiarities and idiosyncrasies that make this little red dot unique.
FOR THE CULTURALLY CONFUSED
Q: My pregnant colleague asked me to sew a button on her jacket. I was happy to, but wondered why she asked me, as she has a reputation for being a great seamstress. What’s that all about? A: Chinese culture abounds in old wives’ tales, or ‘pantang’, involving taboo activities during pregnancy. A common one is that pregnant women should not handle scissors and knives – as it is thought to pose a risk to the unborn baby by ‘cutting’ the umbilical cord or causing foetal malformation. Home renovations are also avoided by superstitious types during pregnancy, as nailing and drilling is supposed to cause trauma to the unborn baby. Some others advise against handling needles and nails in particular, as it is thought that doing so will cause ‘holes’ or pockmarks in the baby’s skin.
the procession, devotees must follow a strict vegetarian diet and abstain from impure thoughts and alcohol for weeks beforehand. Thaipusam festivities in Singapore eclipse those in most parts of India, with the exception of those in Kerala, and it’s the second most celebrated Hindu festival in Singapore after Deepavali. It’s quite a spectacle to behold, and the public are welcome to watch from a respectful distance.
MY WORD!
pantang
(pronounced ‘pan-tang’) - Derived from the Malay word meaning ‘abstinence’, this word is used to describe activities that are discouraged or forbidden for superstitious reasons
Q: I’ve heard about an Indian Hindu
festival that involves self-mutilation. Please tell me more.
A: You’re referring to Thaipusam, an annual Hindu festival that brings traffic to a standstill, literally. Celebrated in honour of Lord Subramaniam (also known as Lord Murugan), who is the destroyer of evil, it sees hundreds of devotees taking part in a procession in order to fulfil vows, seek blessings or forgivenenss, or give thanks. The festival generally lasts for 2 days. On the eve, the chariot procession (with the Lord Subramaniam statue) begins from Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple at Serangoon Road to Layan Sithi Vinayagar Temple at Keong Siak Road. The Thaipusam ceremony starts in the early hours of the morning, when the first batch of devotees carry milk pots and wooden kavadis (heavy portable shrines). Some pierce their tongues or cheeks with skewers, and carry a wooden kavadi decorated with flowers and peacock feathers, balanced on their shoulders. Others carry spiked kavadis that pierce the flesh on their torsos. To take part in 32
sheer deliciousness of the food. Here’s what those grades indicate: A - a score of 85% or higher B - a score of 70% to 84% C - a score of 50% to 69% D - a score of 40% to 49%
Q: When I go to a hawker’s centre, I
always see a certificate with a grade on it – A, B or C, displayed at every stall. What does it indicate?
A: The National Environment Agency grades all licensed eating establishments, including food stalls at hawker centres. This structured system of appraisal was introduced to motivate licensees to improve and maintain good personal and food hygiene, and housekeeping of their premises. Retail food establishments are given a grade by NEA based on the overall hygiene, cleanliness and housekeeping standards of their premises, and all food retail outlets are advised to display the certificate indicating their grade. This serves as a guide for the public to make informed choices, based on factors other than the
- Can also be used interchangeably with the English word ‘superstition(s)’ - Can be used to describe an old wives’ tale(s) in a slightly skeptical, dismissive or derogatory sense For example: “Don’t handle scissors when you’re pregnant – it’s pantang.” “Are you aware of the pantang that says happy and sad events must not take place within 100 days of each other?” “I don’t believe in those silly pantang.”

Christian Stingl: Serious About Gaming, Wild About Raclette and Enamoured with Erdinger At all of 23 years old, Christian is a ‘retired pro gamer’ who studies games programming. He’s been coming to the Swiss Club since he was just a boy, loves hearty German fare and beer, and has the good fortune to have a lovely girlfriend called Tabatha who not only tolerates his gaming habit, but plays with him. TWO FAMILIES AND ONE EXTENDED FAMILY Christian was born and bred in Singapore, the second son of a Singaporean mother and a German father – the Managing Director of Transocean Shipmanagement. He attended the Singapore American School, and is now studying games programming at SAE at the Riverwalk. His parents divorced, and his mother remarried a prominent conservationist. She now resides in Bali. He has an older brother, a stepbrother and a stepsister. In Christian’s own words, “It’s complicated.” When we asked him to cite his length of membership at the Club, he gave the very same answer. Christian explained that his father had been a member since he was around 14 or 15 years old, and his stepfather had been a member for years before that. He remembers coming to the Club for, well, almost as long as he can remember, with both his father and his stepfather. Many of the staff have literally watched Christian grow up. He loves the family feel that envelops him as soon as he enters the grounds. HAZY MEMORIES AND HAPPY MOMENTS Christian’s recollections of happy times spent at the Swiss Club were both vivid and sketchy. He recalled a scene that involved a big bonfire, sausages, marshmallows, smiling kids and parents,
all happily huddled around the flames. When pressed for details, he was unable to cite the exact occasion. However, he clearly recalled one specific day. “I remember this one day when were all hanging out by the pool – the whole family unit. There was me, my brother, my Mum, my stepdad, my stepbrother and stepsister. That was a happy moment,” said Christian emphatically. DISTINCTLY GERMAN TASTEBUDS Christian’s praise for the food at the Swiss Club was as specific as his childhood memories were vague. Despite his Singaporean roots, his tastebuds are most definitely German. “I love the food at the Swiss Club. I try to come here on Wednesday nights for the Raclette promotion. If I can’t get Raclette, I go for meatloaf, the tandoori chicken and naan, or the bratwurst and zwiebelsauce,” said Christian. Despite the endless food choices in Singapore, Christian and his girlfriend Tabatha invariably find themselves eating at the Swiss Club. “Every time when we want food, it’s always ‘Let’s go to the Swiss Club!’” said Christian. “If I want a nice dinner with my girlfriend, we’ll eat at Arbenz in our favourite corner overlooking the jungle. If I want to just hang out with friends and a nice cold Erdinger, I’ll go to Pergola.” “I’d rather come to the Swiss Club than go clubbing any time. Here, you can
chill and talk and actually hear what your friends are saying,” said Christian.
I’d rather come to the Swiss Club than go clubbing any time. SPECIAL OCCASIONS In recalling one evening earlier this year when he took Tabatha’s mother to Arbenz for her birthday dinner, Christian sang the praises of the staff. “The staff here seem to understand what you need without telling them. On that evening, we were served by Yusri, who anticipated our every need. He’s a mind-reader!” marvelled Christian. We left Christian cradling an Erdinger at Pergola, and enjoying the early evening breeze. It was certainly a breath of fresh air to meet a young man who knows exactly what he wants – Raclette, meatloaf, bratwurst, cold Erdinger, and a good game. Incidentally, he likes to play World of Warcraft and Battlefield, and is an alumnus of a ‘clan’ called ‘NUT’ or ‘No Use Talking’. Look out for Christian’s name on the next big game (chances are it will be a WWII-inspired game rather than a futuristic fantasy) and remember – you met him first at the Swiss Club. 33

MONKEY
The Chinese Lunar New Year begins on 8 February this year. It’s the Year of the Monkey, the Fire Monkey to be precise. From all reports, it’s going to be a year of mixed fortunes, with equal numbers of opportunities for the quick-witted and traps for the impulsive. Here’s a potted Chinese horoscope, just for fun. Check out what the Monkey Year may have in store for you – and if you don’t like what you read, well, make your own good fortune! MONKEY
Adventurous Monkeys are not favoured in their namesake year, contrary to what one might assume. Investments are risky and health is in jeopardy, with a high risk of injury. However, if you see opportunity in adversity and proceed with caution, you will swing through the year unscathed. Monkeys share their spunky sign with prestigious primates such as Leonardo da Vinci, Elizabeth Taylor, Tom Hanks and Julius Caesar.
ROOSTER
Flamboyant Roosters are in for a much better year than last. Past investments should pay dividends, and your love life is looking up. This is no time to be coy – if you have feelings for someone, crow about them. Your career luck is good, but your busy schedule may compromise your health. Look after yourself. Roosters dwell in the same cosmic coop as Beyoncé Knowles, Rudyard Kipling, Steve Martin and Yoko Ono.
DOG
Noble dogs are in for a decent year, so long as they put in their share of hard work. You may have to face some hard truths in friendship and in business. Do not embark on get-rich schemes – you’re barking up the wrong tree. Stick to what you’re good at and you shall endure. Dogs share their astral kennel with well-bred achievers such as Elvis Presley, Cher, Donald Trump and Sylvester Stallone.
PIG
Peaceful Pigs can look forward to a year of good luck on all fronts, with abundant opportunities in career, wealth and love. However, some relationships could prove dangerous. Beware of tricksters who are out to steal your heart or win your confidence with evil intentions, and you should prosper. Pigs share their prestigious pen with the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, Carlos Santana, Elton John and Woody Allen.
RAT
Clever Rats are in for a mainly favourable year. Romance luck is mainly good, but a concerted effort is required to make relationships rewarding, and compromise is called for to ensure that harmony prevails. Business and career opportunities abound, but think twice before extending a loan to anyone. Rats brush whiskers with stellar fellows such as Mozart, Marlon Brando, George Washington and Shakespeare. 34

OX
After a tough year, things are looking up for hard-working Oxen. All is well on the home front and in the workplace, and there may be advancement up the corporate ladder. Love interests abound. Remember to pay attention to health and don’t work too hard. Oxen graze the grasslands of good fortune with illustrious characters including Walt Disney, Shirley Bassey, Picasso and Napolean.
TIGER
Risk-taking Tigers face an unsettling year ahead. Confrontations are likely to occur, and disappointments may ambush you. Avoid shortcuts to wealth, and tread carefully in relationships. Stay calm, knuckle down and earn your stripes. Tigers dwell in the same distinguished den as Marilyn Monroe, Richard Branson, Tom Cruise and Marco Polo.
RABBIT
Sensitive Rabbits are set to hop into into a year of good work luck and wealth luck, so it’s a good time to embark on a new venture or investment. Love luck is bucking up, too. Health is favourable, but avoid overeating. Rabbits share their astrological warrens with George Washington, Arthur Miller, Johnny Depp and Catherine I.
DRAGON
Charismatic Dragons are unlucky in love this year. Wealth luck slows to a trickle, and you may have find yourself buried in paperwork at the office. However, if you curb your natural impulsiveness, you’ll sail through the challenges. Regular exercise will help relieve stress. Dragons fly high in the company of powerful personalities like Florence Nightingale, Bruce Lee, John Lennon and Salvador Dali.
SNAKE
Seductive snakes are set to slither quite smoothly through this resoundingly positive year. Your love life will be wildly exciting and rewarding, and career luck and wealth luck abound. Health looks good, but there is a risk of exhaustion from over-exertion. Snakes share the limelight with luminaries such as Audrey Hepburn, Bob Dylan, Taylor Swift and Martin Luther King Jnr.
HORSE
Playful horses are in for a challenging year. It’s a little quiet on the romance front, and attached horses should resist the urge to stray. Money and career luck slow to a trot, and you may feel undervalued at work. Travel could benefit your health and your luck. Horses roam the zodiac with pedigreed performers such as James Dean, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lawrence and Muhammad Ali.
SHEEP
Sheep can look forward to a better year than the last. Support from outsiders will come as a pleasant surprise at work or at school, so don’t look a gift-horse in its mouth (whatever its sign). Health is at risk, so do take care and avoid burning the midnight oil. Sheep share their astral pens with shining stars like Robert De NIro, Whoopi Goldberg, Mick Jagger and Orville Wright.

Serving Swiss Club Members for 16 Years and Loving It We had the pleasure of chatting with Margaret Chiang, a married mother of one and a long-standing member of the F&B service at Pergola and the Jungle Bar. A petite and pretty 66-year-old, she joined the Swiss Club in 1999. ‘CLUBBING’ HER WHOLE LIFE LONG Prior to joining the Swiss Club, Margaret had served for a phenomenal 23 years at the Hollandse Club. She’d briefly flirted with working in hotels, but switched to clubs because she enjoyed serving a more family-oriented clientele. “I love children,” said Margaret. “I watch them grow up here at the Swiss Club, and treat them like family. They treat me like family, too. I’ve lost count of the invitations I’ve had to visit Switzerland and Germany!” MEETING PEOPLE MAKES HER DAY Margaret is one lady who clearly loves her job. She loves meeting people
While working in the service line obviously has its challenges, Margaret insists that the formula for success is quite simple. “If you’re nice, people are generally nice back to you,” said Margaret. “If I meet somebody who’s unhappy, I know that there must be a reason. I always try to win them over.”
