It’s hard to believe that this issue will span the second quarter of the year, when it seems like only yesterday ‘Santa’ graced the Club, delighting the children and dazzling the parents with his witty repartee… By the time you receive this issue hot off the press, the Easter buns will be hot from the oven, Chinese New Year will have come and gone, and Labour Day and Mother’s Day will be on the way.

In other words, time flies. We, the Editorial team of ‘Relax’, hope that your magazine helps capture and commemorate some of those fleeting magic moments that fill our lives with meaning and memories. Next issue, we’ll bring you more fun-filled photos of our annual lion dance and Easter activities. Look out for them and file them away for future reminiscing!

SWISS CLUB

A WORD FROM THE COMMITTEE Dear Fellow Swiss Club Members,

I am motivated by the illustrious history, the beautiful setting and the many offerings at the Club, as well as the enthusiasm of my fellow Committee Members.

When I was asked to join the Swiss Club Committee last year, I knew what I was getting into, or at least I should have known... As some of you may recall, I was Treasurer of the Swiss Club for a short period from 2001 to 2003. Married to a Swiss, father of three girls, and having lived and worked abroad for quite some time, it seemed the right thing to do, namely to contribute to the Swiss community in Singapore by helping out in the Swiss Club Committee. The Club was in ‘growth mode’ at the time, expanding its premises and actively looking to take in more Members. We felt that in order to build a more sustainable business, we needed to expand our offerings, attract more members and achieve higher sales figures. Simultaneously, we were still impacted by the consequences of the Asian financial crisis and the fact that fewer expatriates were sent to Singapore compared to pre-1997. Doesn’t this all sound familiar? In 2005, our family returned to Switzerland, a move we considered the end of our Asian chapter, which had lasted for more than 10 years. As it turned out, we were wrong. In 2012, I was hired by another Swiss Bank and was asked to move back to Asia. Having spent a considerable part of our lives in Hong Kong and Singapore and left with lots of good memories, we readily accepted. Quite obviously, Singapore had changed a lot by then, and so had the Swiss Club, which indeed had done very well during the last couple of years. When I mentioned in my introduction that I should have known what I was getting into, I was referring to the perception that the Club is doing very well and the increasing awareness that its financial performance again looks more challenging than I had wished for. However, despite a difficult economic environment, the diminishing number of Club Members, and an overly ambitious

6

financial budget, I am confident that we can overcome current obstacles. In fact, the Committee is reviewing short-term measures and evaluating longer-term options to put the Club on more solid financial grounds, without losing sight of the need for selective investments. Moreover, I am motivated by the illustrious history, the beautiful setting and the many offerings at the Club, as well as the enthusiasm of my fellow Committee Members, which compensate for the occasional headache when reviewing the financials of the Swiss Club. As presented at our Annual General Meeting (AGM), the Committee is continuing to explore the opportunity of a land deal for unusable land, and will schedule an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) in spring. We ask for your attendance and support on this important issue. More information will follow as soon as it is available. May I wish all Members a good two months ahead and a Happy Easter to you and your family. Yours sincerely,

M.Blattmann Markus Blattmann Treasurer treasurer@swissclub.org.sg

SWISS CLUB

A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members, ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’ and thank you to those Members who took the time to join the celebrations at our annual lion dance, welcoming in the Year of the Monkey. Hopefully good fortune and luck will channel winds in our direction as the global financial outlook for 2016 remains challenging. I promised on behalf of all our staff to convey their heartfelt appreciation towards Members for the ‘Red Packet’ Ang Pow contribution received over the Chinese New Year period. Thank you so much. As I flicked through this issue of ‘Relax’ before it went to print, I realised 1 March marks my first year as the General Manager of the Club. I’d like to thank the Committee, Club Members and my colleagues for the many positive pieces of feedback, constructive ideas and support as we explore new avenues to ensure the Swiss Club remains current and attractive now and for future Members. As mentioned previously, Members make the Club. Though we are committed to add new offerings and features for your enjoyment, we need your support to make them successful and worthwhile. Do you have ideas or wish to comment on something that’s missing or can be done better? Please write in or join the Committee to share your thoughts. (By the way, you don’t have to be Swiss to be a Committee member!) With the 2016 car decals on your windscreens, the pool reopened and our blue ‘T-Rex’ towel machine helping to keep our towels at the Club, you would think – what’s more to be done? As usual, we have plenty of activities lined up and projects to complete. With the planning now in its final stages, we aim to launch our new Hair Boutique & Spa Studio for relaxing treatments by mid-April. We should be able to serve you and offer takeaway wines from our wine retail store by end-March. And

we intend to bring life back to the Rifle Lounge with buzzing after-work ‘happy hours’ featuring great music from the Golden Era – and we may even present the odd live performance once in a while. Three big events are planned for spring and summer, so mark your calendars. We host an Open House/Family Day on 20 March to entice new Members to join the Swiss Club family by introducing them to the many excellent services we provide together with great food and our legendary Swiss hospitality. On 20 – 21 April, for the second year running ‘The Fair @ the Swiss Club’ will present exciting stalls selling handicrafts, clothes, interior decor and much, much more. And in May we bring out the Maibaum, or Maypole, to celebrate Maifest with fun for kids and adults alike. You can expect plenty of sausage-sizzling, ice-cold beverages and lively German music. Look out for posters, banners and newsletters for dates, times and sign-up details. Whatever you do, do not miss these events.

Three big events are planned for spring and summer, so mark your calendars.

All that remains to be said is – Happy Easter, and enjoy the coming months ahead. The Team and undersigned better get things moving to ensure we manage it all in time! See you at the Club.

Warmest regards, Carsten Kjeldmann General Manager carsten.kjeldmann@swissclub.org.sg

SPORTS

James and His Daily Ritual The Club’s car park is empty and the sky is barely lit by the rising sun. From the pavilion you can hear loud eclectic music and the treadmill running. It’s barely 7am and James is up at full speed running, gearing up to kick-start his day by working out. This is his daily ritual. REFUEL FOR THE DAY AHEAD Though James’s workout may vary from day to day, one thing is for sure. It gives him the fuel he needs to power through the day.

I am an early riser, it’s a beautiful time of the day, and the Club is quiet. It’s wonderful to have a dip in the pool after working out.

James only began religiously working out after his move to Singapore. Prior to that, he only played sports socially – a little bit of everything. It was only in 2014 when his son Jai asked him to try a new sport that he decided to try working out in the gym. TRAINER TRANSFORMS PERCEPTIONS James’s idea of the gym was that it was repetitive, boring and more pain than fun. But when he hired a trainer, his perception changed completely. From being painful, it turned into a daily routine that helped clear his mind and enabled him to better focus through the day. As he works long hours, working out is both a mental and physical break from the workplace. One of the reasons James likes training with a trainer is that it creates a commitment. Furthermore, having a variety of exercises each day keeps it interesting and fun.

Working out with a trainer is very important to me – if I trained by myself I would only do the things I like. 18

He said, “Working out with a trainer is very important to me – if I trained by myself I would only do the things I like and I would not know what I was really doing. Secondly it would bring me into a default mode about thinking about work.” A BEAUTIFUL TIME OF DAY Why does James work out first thing in the morning? “I am an early riser, it’s a beautiful time of the day, and the Club is quiet. It’s wonderful to have a dip in the pool after working out. I love the fresh air and the tranquillity of the Club at that time,” said James. One Enchanted Evening at SSiS

NEWS FROM THE

One evening last December, the students, parents, guests and staff of SSiS gathered to enjoy Advent together. Thanks to the imagination and ingenuity of all involved, they were transported to a magical ‘Winter Wonderland’. CHILLY SETTING, HEARTWARMING PERFORMANCES The evening began with a beautiful choral rendition of ‘Leise rieselt der Schnee’, sung by Kindergarten and Lower Primary students. This was followed by a performance of the popular ‘Winter Wonderland’ song by the Upper Primary students, setting the perfect ambience for the evening.

part in wonderful winter snow activities. Primary 3 students sang ‘Snowflakes’ with a marvellous instrumental accompaniment. Primary 4s danced, sang and whirled to the catchy beat of ‘Chlöisli i span dis Eseli a’. Primary 5s thoroughly entertained the audience with various renditions of the famous song ‘Jingle Bell Rock’. The Primary 6s performed the final act – a medley of modern songs with various props such as roller skates and hockey sticks. They flawlessly executed a number of cool, icy moves through a brilliantly choreographed performance of

For the grand finale, the whole school gathered on stage to sing ‘We are the World’.

The audience was spellbound as Sarina and Reto, played by students, tried to build a snowman. Upon completion of their masterpiece, Reto tried to take a photograph but, to their dismay, things did not go according to plan. The flash caused the snowman to come alive! And so began the adventurous journey of Sarina, Reto and the rest of their friends to the magical Winter Wonderland…

A SHOW OF MANY TALENTS The EC students took to the stage with a sweet performance of ‘Candy Bars and Milkshake’. They were followed by Kindergarten who grooved to ‘Move like Jagger’ by Maroon 5, which really got the audience rocking. Primary 1 wowed the crowd, gracefully dressed as fairies and fierce ice workers while illustrating a dichotomy of light and dark. Primary 2 sang a melodious rendition of ‘Klanggeschichte’ while happily taking 24

‘Ice Baby’, which blended in beautifully with the wintry atmosphere. For the grand finale, the school gathered on stage to sing whole the famous charity song – ‘We are the World’, concluding the evening with the traditional Christmas carol ‘Silent Night’. Needless to say, this wonderful evening could not have been possible without the hard work of students and staff. Mrs Tritsch:

A Frequent Traveller Who

Loves to Come ‘Home’ to the Swiss Club This très chic French grandmother of four (and soon to be five) roams the world often and lives ‘far away’ (in a local context) at Sentosa Cove, yet she happily and regularly travels to the Swiss Club to dine and relax. AN EXPATRIATE LIFE Mrs Tritsch is an empty-nester, with two adult sons – one living in New Jersey, with his wife and three children, and another living in Paris with his expecting wife and child. She visits her family often, and regularly travels to Indonesia, Japan and the United States with her husband, whose work requires frequent travel. A seasoned expatriate, Mrs Tritsch lived in New Jersey for 14 years prior to coming to Singapore just over 18 months ago, and lives in a condo at Sentosa Cove. The Swiss Club membership was part of her husband’s expatriate package.

AMONG FRIENDS FROM DAY ONE Mrs Tritsch clearly recalls her first visit to the Swiss Club, to attend a concert by the famous Swiss ‘boogeyman’ Nico Brina. “Everyone was so friendly and we had so much fun. We thought ‘Oh wow!’, this is great – we love it!” said Ms Tritsch, vividly recalling her resoundingly positive first impressions of the Club.

We love the calm. The surroundings are so open, serene and green.

This worldly lady loves to immerse herself in other cultures, and cannot fathom the mentality of those who live abroad, yet yearn only for home.

When asked what she loves most about the Club, Mrs Tritsch was anything but lost for words. “We love the calm. The surroundings are so open, serene and green. There are no problems with parking… The food is great, the staff are very attentive… Every time I come here I feel as if I am at home and among friends.” Mrs Tritsch was reluctant to single out a staff member for special mention, not because she couldn’t think of one to praise, but because she wanted to praise them all. She did, however, cite the example of the staff’s sincere efforts to mitigate her disappointment when the massage services were recently discontinued. “When the massage service closed for the renovations, the staff offered to get the masseuse’s contact details and arrange for her to come to my home. Though I did not take them up on their offer, the fact that they were willing to try meant a lot to me,” recalled Mrs Tritsch. “They always go the extra mile.”

ON MENU, WILL SAMPLE! Mrs Tritsch especially enjoys the Club’s Champagne brunches, and commends the excellent choice of the LaurentPerrier brand of bubbly. She praised the accompanying buffet, which provides an opportunity to try exotic cuisines and dishes, even some seldom seen French dishes that she would otherwise not have the occasion to sample. Mrs Tritsch is a fan of the regular dining promotions, and relishes variety. “We try everything, the Tartare promotion, the Lobster Week – you name it!” said this gastronomic adventuress. ACTIVITIES WELCOMED When we asked if Mrs Tritsch had any suggestions for improving the Club, she suggested that the Club could offer more activities that were culturally enriching and intellectually stimulating. She mentioned that she missed the floristry workshop before Christmas as she was travelling, and would welcome more opportunities to broaden her mind and pick up new skills. Though she is aware that many other organisations offer talks and workshops on Singapore culture for newcomers, Mrs Tristch said that if they were offered at the Swiss Club, she would definitely attend them. “The Swiss Club would always be my first choice,” said Mrs Tritsch. Thank you, Mrs Tritsch, for your kind words. Your love of life, and of the Swiss Club, was uplifting.

Family-friendly Facilities Drew the Clements Family to the Club Members since July 2015, Rob and Melinda chose the Swiss Club after inspecting a number of clubs in Singapore. Its activities for kids, open spaces, lush greenery and proximity to their home in Holland Village made their decision easy. PRECIOUS FAMILY TIME Hailing from Australia and blessed with two lovely daughters, Rob is Managing Principal at a leading management consulting company and Melinda works at an international school. They clearly value the sanctuary of the Swiss Club, so near yet so far from their workday world. “It’s a wonderful escape from the hectic pace of our daily lives,” said Rob. The family enjoys simple playtime with their children and often use the pool, since they live in a landed property with no access to condo facilities. They also love dining at the Pergola and particularly

enjoy the Indian food and char kway teow, which they consider to be the best in Singapore.

responsibility, Rob pointed out, sits not only with the Club’s management and staff, but also its members.

HOSPITABLE STAFF Having toured several clubs in Singapore, the Clements family claimed that Serene’s tour of the Club was second to none. They also singled out Ryonne at Pergola for special mention, adding that all the staff are consistently warm and welcoming.

“We also hope that over time the Club embraces more nationalities to enhance the cultural diversity, not just within the membership base but across the Club’s services and events,” said Rob.

HOPES FOR THE FUTURE Rob and Melinda hope that the Club remains the family-friendly, laidback environment it is today. This

Rob suggested, for example, that the Club could celebrate the National Days of other Members’ countries of origin, or its own version of a 'United Nations Day’. Given that our truly international Club boasts Members hailing from no less than 45 countries, it’s certainly food for thought.

Q&A

INTERESTS THE KNOW-ALL

We shed light on curious local customs, from ROM celebrations to durian regulations.

FOR THE CULTURALLY CONFUSED

Q: I attended a friend’s Registry of Marriage service and was invited to a pleasant afternoon tea on the same day. I was quite confused when I discovered that the newlyweds did not intend to live together until after the wedding dinner. I had assumed it was the equivalent of a marriage in a registry office. Am I wrong? A: You are not wrong. The ceremony at the Registry of Marriages, aka ‘ROM’, signifies a legally binding union in the eyes of the law. However, tradition dictates that the couple aren’t truly married until the wedding dinner, which is sometimes held months or even a year later. Couples from traditional Chinese families will take part in a wedding tea ceremony at which they serve their elders

tea. This is the symbolic milestone of being truly married, after which fullblown married life commences. Q: I have seen a sign that looks like a durian crossed out in train stations. What does this signify? A: It is actually an offence punishable by a fine to take durians into certain public places, on account of their strong and lingering odour. In 1988, MRT imposed a fine of $500 on passengers found to be carrying durian on board trains. Other public buildings also forbid the visitors and even residents from bringing durian into elevators. Hence you’ll notice the Singaporean tradition of eating durians on the spot, at roadside vendors, where the stink is dispersed in the open air.

Meet Eden: Service is Her

‘Cup of Tea’! Hailing from southern Luzon in the Philippines, Eden Ferrer Villagomez loves the Swiss Club ‘family’ and believes that happiness is contagious.

MY WORD!

tar pau

(also tar pao, ta pau, da bao) (pronounced ‘tar pow’) Hokkien for ‘take away’ or ‘take out’, in reference to food being taken off the premises and consumed elsewhere For example: “Can you tar pau some chicken rice for me on the way home?” “Let’s tar pau and watch a movie a home!” “Eat here or tar pau?”

MEET A STAFFER

I always try to serve my guests as I would like to be served.

CURE FOR HOMESICKNESS Eden has been in Singapore for four years, and with the Swiss Club for almost one. This petite 31-year-old previously worked as a barista and as a Senior Front Desk Executive with a spa. She is now a Management Trainee, working in Arbenz under the mentorship of her Manager, Suzaimi. Clearly, she loves her job.

“I always try to serve my guests as I would like to be served. It’s great to make people happy – happiness is contagious,” Eden said. “Service is my cup of tea!”

“This is the most family-oriented work environment I have ever experienced. Even though I am away from home, this feels like my second home,” said Eden.

Her favourite dish? “I loved the glazed pork. It has a Latino flavour which appeals to my Filipino palate,” said Eden. She added that she is exercising regularly, and exercising restraint when it comes to food, as she is getting married in a year’s time. (Congratulations, Eden!)

“I am very grateful to the Swiss Club. With savings from my earnings, I have built a house for my mother and started a small business for my family back home,” Eden added with sincerity. ALL IN A DAY’S WORK Eden’s responsibilities centre around serving customers.

EDEN RECOMMENDS… Fresh (and still full) from a food tasting the previous day, Eden urges members to try the new menu at Arbenz.

You would definitely have noticed Eden’s beautiful sunny smile, now you know her pretty name.

Have you ever wondered how the Easter bunny found its way into a Christian festival? Read on and find out

and Other Curious Easter Customs HOW THE BUNNY HOPPED OVER… Though Easter is a Christian celebration, it is thought that the Easter bunny stems from the pagan goddess of fertility known as Eostre, whose animal symbol was a hare. According to legend, Eostre found a bird dying from the cold and turned it into a rabbit so its fur would keep it warm – but after its transformation, the rabbit still laid eggs like a bird. The Anglo-Saxon tribes of Northern Europe held a festival every spring equinox in her honour. Since the pagan springtime festival coincided with Easter, the egg-laying hare hopped into Christian tradition and morphed into the Easter bunny, a bearer of candy and chocolate eggs every Easter Sunday. He was brought to America with German immigrants in the 1700s, who settled in Pennsylvania. Today, ‘old big ears’ has become the most commercially recognised symbol of Easter. Children around the world await his visit on the night before Easter Sunday, when he is thought to bring chocolate eggs, depositing them in a fixed place or hiding them around the house and garden for the traditional Easter egg hunt. A WORLD OF WONDER People the world over celebrate Easter, in their own local ways and with their own curious customs, as a time of hope and new beginnings.

People the world over celebrate Easter, in their own local ways and with their own curious customs. 28

Here is a random sampler of weird and wonder-filled practices around the globe. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia … on Easter Monday, boys whip girls on the legs with a pomlázka: a braided whip made from pussywillow twigs, in exchange for a ribbon and an egg. Like the Easter bunny, the tradition hails from pagan times. It is thought to bring health and youth to the whipped!

In Norway … reading detective novels an crime fiction has become a popular holiday pastime. Paaskekrim (Easter crime) refers to the new crime novels available at Easter. Some sources say it relates to the violent nature of the crucifixion. Others say it was marketed as a good way to spend the long holiday in the mountains. In Finland and Sweden … children dress up as witches and walk the streets in search of treats during the week before Easter Sunday. Legend has it that during the Easter festival witches flew to a mountain in Germany to cavort with Satan. To this day, people light bonfires and fireworks to scare them away.

In Latvia … people play a game with a hard-boiled egg, in which players pair up and tap the ends of their eggs together. Players are eliminated as their eggs break.

In Mexico … an elaborate passion play is held every year in the town of Iztapalapa, near Mexico City, drawing one million visitors each year. The tradition started in 1843, after a cholera epidemic. The survivors staged the first play to give thanks for the end of the epidemic, and for being spared.

However you celebrate, have a wonderful Easter!
