Hello, again! Congratulations on a highly successful Open House. I had the pleasure of attending, and was impressed by the warm hospitality and the infectious enthusiasm of the organisers. I happened to overhear visitors effusively praising the natural beauty of the grounds and the colonial charm of the Club House's architecture. You certainly have a Club to be proud of. For me, the unforgettable performances by The Glue, the amazing 5-man a cappella band from Switzerland, were a highlight of the event. Loved their unique, genre-blending sound!

You certainly have a Club to be proud of. The highlights of this issue’s shelf life are Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Judging by the number of adorable little kids we see by the pool and in the playground, there must be many mums and dads looking forward to the inevitable handmade cards and gifts lovingly made at school. Check out the heartmelting tributes from some of our youngest members on Page 28, who penned their messages to Mum and Dad while dining in Pergola. The task of gathering tributes proved more challenging than we had anticipated, as the kids were almost always accompanied by their parents. When you think about it, it’s a compliment to the diligence and vigilance of the parents! It seems barely possible that this will be our sixth issue of ‘RELAX’, since the revamped digital version last August. Thank you for your kind words of encouragement and constructive words of criticism. It has certainly been an enjoyable project for us – myself and my partners, Pam and Edwin, who have been producing your magazine with the tremendous support of Christelle and her new ‘lieutenant’ Gary. Have a wonderful May and June. Till next issue,

AN EXCELLENT EASTER BRUNCH
A VERY HAPPY COUPLE
Dear Adrian,
Hi Paulina,
You have outdone yourself again for the Easter Brunch. My entire table (consisting of five families) were impressed with the variety of dishes, quality of the food, and the presentation of everything!
Apologies for the delayed response, we were on our honeymoon and just got back. We were very happy with how things turned out on the day – please give our thanks to everyone involved, as they did a great job. The food was very good, the Pimm’s was done just right and the setting was great.
The buffet was perfect as it was very child-friendly. Some people don’t understand that Easter events involve the whole family. But you definitely captured the essence of a family brunch.
You definitely captured the essence of a family brunch. The dessert buffet was beautifully presented with the right amount of sweetness for both kids and adults. Usually the dessert buffet would either appeal to just the adults or just the kids, but it was a perfect mix this time.
We were very happy with how things turned out on the day. One last thing to mention, we came to pick up the remainder of our cake before we left and as we were in a hurry the club manager gave us a plate to carry the cake on. We’ll try to drop by at some point over the next week to return it.
I would also like to add that even though the wait staff were overwhelmed with the crowd, they performed beautifully and always with a smile. Well done!
Thank you again for all your good work!
Of course, the food was a part of the whole. The added activities for the kids were super. I’ve seen pictures of the Easter brunch in Singapore Island Country Club and trust me, ours was much better!
John Hogger
Great job everyone! Best Regards, Aileen Aschwanden

SWISS CLUB
A WORD FROM THE COMMITTEE Dear Fellow Swiss Club Members, On behalf of the Club Committee, I would like to thank you for your support during the recently held Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM). During the meeting, several members asked very valid questions and provided constructive inputs and comments. A large majority of the members being physically present or represented by proxy has approved the important project of the combined sale of three unused land lots.
40/XV has established itself well and has been actively driving the tennis and padel activities in the Club.
These three lots are separated by roads, have wrong zoning and cannot be integrated into the Club. Following the acceptance of the proposal, the Club Committee will arrange a professionally managed auction process during which the land lots will be sold to the highest bidder at market rate and above the prior determined reserve price. The net proceeds of the land sale (after deduction of some urgent items for renovation, repayment of The Guesthouse loans and some provisions) will be ring-fenced and prudently invested with a focus on long-term capital preservation while realising an appropriate income. The Land fund will be managed by the Land Fund sub-committee, which was appointed following the amendment and approval of the proposed Swiss Club Rule changes. The sub-committee will develop a detailed investment policy. With this solution, the Club Committee will be able to realise the important required investments in order to upgrade the facilities in the beautiful settings of the Swiss Club premises. On a more operational side, Carsten and his team have several new activities and offerings lined up for you. For more details, please refer to the following pages of this edition. The recently organised Open House day was a success and resulted in the sign-up of several new members.
6
On the sports side, we are pleased that 40/XV has established itself well and has been actively driving the tennis and padel activities in the Club. The recently re-introduced aqua biking is gaining interest; a new class is offered on Wednesday evening in addition to Thursday and Saturday mornings. Our dance instructor Richard Little of Dancereflex would be delighted to introduce you to Latin Tango and Salsa on Thursday evenings. Even if you are travelling and miss out on classes, you can get back into the rhythm and refresh your steps during the practice session. The basketball class for kids (aged 9-12) is available on Saturday mornings. Our Sports Manager, Timothy, is currently working on a new format for the summer sports camps. Please feel free to contact him for any suggestions. I would like to wish all members an active and relaxed time in the Swiss Club. Yours sincerely,
D.Mueller

A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members, Hope you had a splendid past two months and are now refreshed and ready to join in the many exciting Club events lined up over the next couple of months. We kindly ask for your support and participation, as it makes organising these activities worthwhile. There’s nothing like a good crowd to boost the fun factor and entertainment value for all. Also, thanks go to those Members who hosted their company functions, private events and seminars with us. We appreciate your trust and partnership very much. For those of you who had the time to stop by our ‘Open House’, you probably felt the energy and effort that our Membership and Marketing department had put in, showcasing the Club and its offerings to Bukit Timah residents and non-members alike. Our first event of this nature welcomed 220 participants. Highlights of the programme included the music from Swiss a cappella band ‘The Glue’, Chef Adrian’s grilled sausages, synchronised swimming performed by our Swiss Club girls, an alfresco wine bar and hourly guided tours. Since the environment for private members’ clubs in Singapore has changed significantly over the years, it’s important we stay current with services and facilities to entice new Member signups. With the ‘Open House’ day drawing to a close, our delighted Membership Manager announced seven new families had joined us! Well done, Serene and Open House Team for the splendid effort. On that note, a fascinating observation – despite the Club’s present location since 1927, some visitors were unaware of the Swiss Club and its beautiful scenery. The Club’s Marketing department is now in full swing to change this by unveiling our ‘hidden jewel’ for improved awareness. That said, it is important that the Club protects its reputation and remains an inclusive Member & Invited Guest Club Only. As you may have observed over the past
weeks, we have become somewhat more diligent in asking for Members’ cards and payment, since time and again we have observed non-members coming to the Club without being invited, simply using our facilities. Surely this is an unacceptable situation, both for the Club and its paying Members. So, from 15 April 2016, payment with Nets and Credit Card was abolished except for The Guesthouse stays or events, in order to protect our Members’ privileges. With summer approaching in Europe, we can again look forward to seasonal delicacies being served at the Club, white asparagus being one of them. Not only is it a healthy eat, but its delicious taste pairs perfectly with an array of different foods and aromatic cool climate wines Ask Yusri and Ryonne at Arbenz and I’m sure they have a recommendation or two. Other exciting European-inspired events include our very own Maifest where beer, food and music will flow for two days. We will also have a visiting Italian winemaker’s dinner, which is not to be missed. You can find more information inside this very magazine. We look forward to seeing you there! As we welcome summer and the activities that surrounds it, we once again introduce our Summer Membership for a period of two months. Do recommend this excellent opportunity to experience the Club to friends, family and business colleagues.
With the ‘Open House’ day drawing to a close, a delighted Membership Manager announced seven new families had joined us!
Finally, I would like to congratulate our Deputy Club Manager – Finance and Administration, Eléonore Taillens, on the birth of her twin sons. May motherhood bring her much happiness. Have a great summer! Warmest regards,
Carsten Kjeldmann General Manager carsten.kjledmann@swissclub.org.sg

A Rousing Start to the Year of the Monkey In the spirit of embracing local culture, the Swiss Club entered into the swing of the Chinese New Year festivities with a lavish reunion dinner and spectacular lion dance.
Many tri-generational families came decked out in festive finery. A FILL OF GOOD FOOD AND GOOD FORTUNE On Sunday 7 February, the Swiss Club held a traditional Chinese Reunion Dinner. Chef Jacky cooked up an awesome auspicious feast, including the mandatory yu sheng. The day unfolded at a leisurely pace as families drifted in at intervals, some arriving early and others arriving late. Many tri-generational families came decked out in festive finery, resplendent in reds, oranges, pinks and springthemed florals. Each gathering kicked off with the traditional yu sheng ceremony. Little ones
could be seen digging in and foraging for their favourite crunchy morsels before the adults could brandish their chopsticks. Nobody had the heart to dish out a scolding – their ‘enthusiasm’ was greeted with indulgent smiles and laughter.
After the prancing, dancing, crashing of cymbals and banging of drums came the photo-taking. The ‘Cai Shen’ mascot was a hit with young and old. It was a wonderful start to the weekend and hopefully an auspicious start to the Monkey Year.
By the end of the evening, Chef Jacky’s expression had transformed from stressed to pleased. Everyone left with a fill of good food and hopefully, food fortune for the year ahead. A LION DANCE FOR THE MONKEY YEAR On Saturday 20 February, the annual lion dance took place at the Swiss Club. At around 11.30am, everyone gathered in front of the Club House for the traditional spectacle. The little ones squeezed their way to get ‘front row’ positions.
Love Was in the Air On Saturday 13 February, the Swiss Club held its annual Valentine’s Dinner. Cupid spoke to the ‘weather man’ and held back the rain, and Chef Adrian’s beautiful dishes put everyone in the mood for love.
14
DRY SKIES AND FLOWING WINE As evening approached, Chef Adrian’s anxiety mounted. The sky looked particularly grey and a downpour looked imminent. However, the weather miraculously cleared and the dinner started, according to plan, with an aperitif at 6pm.
IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE… The famous quote from Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’ sprung to mind on this, the thirteenth night of February and the eve of Valentine’s Day. A pair of roving musicians set the night to music, their sweet notes floating through the balmy evening air as they serenaded each smiling couple.
The pool lights and hanging red hearts created the perfect ambience for a feast of love. And a feast it was, as confirmed by the abundance of compliments to the chef that came pouring in.
Going by the fully booked tables and the lingering diners, the Valentine’s Dinner is set to become one of the most eagerly anticipated annual rituals of the Swiss Club. Thanks go to all who supported the promotion. We hope it ended happily ever after…

FIRST DINING
y n a M r u O s e s a c w o h S s m r a h C d i Splend
The inaugural Swiss Club Open House took place on Sunday 20 March 2016 from 11am to 4pm. The event was a great success, with four new members signed up virtually on the spot, and many more registering expressions of interest. DOWNPOURS AND HIGH SPIRITS Despite a few light downpours midafternoon, the weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of the highspirited crowd. Much to the relief of the organisers, more than 250 people turned up. Most had heard of the event via expat forums and organisations, or through the event listings posted online. Attendees tucked into the delicious sausages and raclette on offer with the generous support of Huber Butchery, and downed fine wines by Vinotek Leopold. A bouncy castle was a huge hit with the little ones, as was the face painting by the wildly talented Emma Facepainting and the cow stacking game station, courtesy of Swiss Tourism. CLUB TOURS AND QUIZZES Throughout the day, attendees were invited to join guided tours of the Club’s premises, led by Carsten. An unscheduled fourth tour was added to meet demand. The enlightened members of his tour groups responded enthusiastically to the quizzes conducted by the excellent emcee Natasha and our very own Christelle. Going by the accuracy and promptness of their answers, Carsten had obviously 16
delivered his commentary, including milestone dates from the Club’s rich past, with conviction. CONVENORS SHARED THEIR WARES Many of the Club’s faithful convenors turned up and manned booths to share knowledge of their courses and classes with the public. Buds Theatre Company in particular provided enthralling entertainment for young and old, with amusing banter and moving versions of hit songs from ‘Frozen’ and other hit movies. The kids lapped up every minute of it, gamely entering contests requiring animal impersonations and putting on an utterly adorable impromptu show of their own!
Many remarked on the stunning natural surroundings of the Club. UNFORGETTABLE PERFORMANCES A highlight of the event was a pair of unforgettable performances by The Glue, an amazing five-man, all-guy a cappella group from Switzerland. The
collective sound was so rich it was hard to believe that there was no instrumental accompaniment. Their orchestrated dance moves and quirky humour were like nothing we had ever seen. The Glue was in Singapore on the first leg of its Asian tour, spanning Singapore, Taiwan and Malaysia. They had been staying at The Guesthouse, and generously praised the experience. “The last two times we were in Singapore, we stayed downtown. This time round, we’re staying at The Guesthouse and loving it. Being so close to nature yet close to everything is fantastic,” said Oliver Rudin, a band member. Oliver’s accolade sums up the sentiments of those visitors we chatted to on the day. Many remarked on the stunning natural surroundings of the Club – a world away from the everyday, yet just a short drive from town. Sincere thanks to our Members for patiently accommodating our visitors, and to all who tirelessly contributed to the day’s excellent outcome. Here’s to an equally successful Swiss Club Open House next year!

Fitness is a
Lifestyle
Recently when I was training someone, he told me about an app he uses to work on his abs. He said it was eight minutes long. It got me reflecting on the time people devote to fitness, be it in sporadic app-timed bursts or sudden weight loss-driven surges after festive feasting. If only we could all find time to build fitness into our daily lives… A RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK Beyond my own circle of clients, I have also noticed the use of workout apps in gyms in many places. It’s been making me wonder – should I start my own? Most of these apps have 7 to 8 minute workouts that seem ideal for those who are in a rush. They are particularly suited to those who only have a few free minutes in between their days’ appointments. It is always interesting for me to hear from those who claim they have little free time to exercise. I cannot help but wonder – is it really true? I was having an interesting conversation one morning with someone who trains regularly all year round. We spoke about how the gym is busy during certain months and on certain days of the week. For instance, Mondays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings seem to have the highest flow of people. However, the people who come to work out on the mid-weekdays are always changing. IN SEARCH OF QUICK FIXES A question I am so often asked is – “How can I lose weight quickly”? Here is the breakdown of an average day for most people who work…
24 hours in a day 6 - 8 hours for sleep 8 - 10 hours for work 1 - 2 hours
for commuting
2 - 3 hours for family/ self-time 1 hour for ……?
It’s amazing how after the Christmas break everyone is in full swing. Gyms are full, people are out running and time is found to exercise. However once the Christmas weight is lost, and/ or motivation has died, the time for exercising is also lost! The secret to maintaining a healthy body and physique is consistency. There are few who manage to master this. Having a consistent workout routine all year round will enable you to see and feel the effects of keeping healthy and exercising.
Having a consistent workout routine all year round will enable you to see and feel the effects of keeping healthy and exercising. There are no quick fixes to fitness. Period. Weight management and fitness require a commitment to a lifestyle. Find the time! Article contributed by Timothy Felix Rajadurai, Sports Manager, Swiss Club 19

Promoting Padel at Swiss Club Open House Thanks go to everyone who came out to the padel demos and trials at the Swiss Club Open House. It was a hit. SPREADING THE WORD, SHARING THE FUN Although it was a pity that the rain interrupted play in the early afternoon, it was great to see the genuine interest shown by everyone there. We had a good mix of children, adults and new guests play and try their hand at padel throughout the day.

Intense Tennis
March/April have seen a lot of action on the tennis courts. We held our first Junior Tournament of the year, and saw significant improvements in the young players’ games. Last but not least, we held a very successful Easter Tennis Camp over two weeks in March, attended by almost 40 kids. Great fun was had by all.
CONGRATULATIONS, JUNIOR PLAYERS ‘Well done’ to the winners and runners-up in the following categories: 10 & Under Champion Winner: Renaud De Panafieu Runner-up: Anouk Veyres 10 & Under Winner: Lucas Aschwanden Runner-up: Sebastian Wiegele 12 & Under Champion Winner: Giselle Weber Runner-up: Mara Fuchs 12 & Under Winner: Ben Wiegele Runner-up: Federico Ghersi Open Winner: Sandra Peter Runner-up: Nans Petit GREAT TENNIS AHEAD We recently created a ladder tournament for men, consisting of 6 boxes of 4 players, with groups updated every month, which has already become very 20
popular. Currently, 24 guys are fighting it out in friendly games, totalling more than 60 hours of tennis every month. In addition, our Men’s players are competing in the STA Single League and, as I write this article, our Swiss Club Men’s Team B still has a chance to reach the semi-final. Fingers crossed. Our three Ladies’ teams are playing their WITS and LTA Leagues and still have a lot of matches to play. Special congratulations to our WITS Team D division, who are playing in a tennis competition for the very first time. In fact, cheers to all our Ladies’ Swiss Club teams and don’t forget – work hard, have fun and never give up!

Want to Break Free? Ride! The Swiss Club Riders, a group of passionate mountain bike riders, recently kicked off bi-weekly mountain bike outings for Swiss Club members. After just two excursions, this new family-oriented activity has been enthusiastically embraced. SETTING THE WHEELS IN MOTION The first outing, barely promoted, attracted a group of four participants plus the two tour guides. The second outing drew a total of eight respondents, though in the end fourteen participants of diverse ages took part. (Ladies and girls, you are very welcome to join!) The ride took the group from the pipeline to Chestnut Avenue, then on to the newly opened downhill trail and, via a small loop (single trails again), to the Park Connector and back to the Swiss Club. BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE The Swiss Club Riders’ outings are free (you just need to bring your own bike and
water), strenuous (but not too strenuous), muddy (of course!), sweaty, and most of all, great fun. As promised, no one was or will ever be left behind (not even those arriving with a flat front tyre).
Come join our growing group of pedal-powered freedom-seekers. We are planning outings on the following dates: 24 April, 15 and 22 May, and 5 June. Look out for email updates from the Club.
Come join our growing group of pedalpowered freedom-seekers. Just make sure your bikes are in good condition – and don’t forget to bring a spare inner tube! Article and photo contributed by Felix Kobel, Swiss Club Riders

Lessons from the Past at the Living Wax Museum The Primary 5 and 6 students at the Swiss School hosted their very own biographical interactive Wax Museum, honouring influential people from the past and present. RECREATING ROLE MODELS Imagine you had the chance to meet one of your idols from history – a great leader, an inventor, a writer, a musician, an artist, a sports hero, an actor or the Queen herself. What would you want to know about that person? Now, imagine that you had the opportunity to assume the role of that very figure. Who would you like to be?
Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up. Pablo Picasso
Swiss School students got to answer that very question by participating in the Wax Museum. Drawing on their creativity, each of the children had the artistic license to recreate their role model. Creativity, today, is the most important leadership quality for success in business, according to a new study by IBM.
The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall. Che Guevara
While the Wax Museum is not a revolution, we made the apple fall through the work of dedicated teachers
and engaged students. In the weeks leading up to the Wax Museum Day, students researched background information about their chosen historical figure. They were required to write a short essay that captured the essence of that figure's personality, life journey and achievements. Once the research was completed, the transformation process began where students worked on creating their costumes, preparing their one-minute speeches and decorating their display boards.
Learning never exhausts the mind. Leonardo da Vinci
Generally speaking, we associate ‘learning’ with cognitive, formal learning such as studying and memorising vocabulary, factual information of all kinds, mathematical formulas and so on. However, this is only a part of how we learn at the Swiss School. We also learn through positive experiences and positive emotions. A key word is ‘significance’ – if something matters to a child, it will be learnt. A TRIUMPHANT OPENING On the day of the exhibition opening, the students dressed as their characters,
carrying props and display boards. They posed and froze, ready to come alive at the push of a button. Parents, teachers and students poured into the hall, eager to ‘meet’ some very influential people.
Hugs can do great amounts of good – especially for children. Princess Diana
Positive, honest reinforcement and constructive feedback are the best forms of encouragement in the process of learning. Everyone left the exhibition having learnt something about the historical figures, about poise under pressure, and about how much our students can accomplish when we hand them the reigns to their education. The Wax Museum was a positive learning experience for all. We would like to thank all the children for giving us the opportunity to visit this wonderful exhibition of their work. Getting to Know
Leon Löwentraut
The ‘Boy Wonder’ of the German art world, Leon Löwentraut is just 18 years old. The Swiss Club hosted his first Asian exhibition in the Alpenrose Room from 1 – 3 April. We spoke with Leon about art, life and looking forward. THE PHENOMENON OF LEON When we chatted with Leon, he had just enjoyed a painting session with Swiss Club Members' children. He not only enjoys inspiring young artists, but loves observing them and even learning from them. He himself started painting with his mother at the age of seven, and enjoyed the experience so much that he was soon painting compulsively. There was never any sense of competition with his mother, since she painted mainly landscapes.
I am too impatient to paint with oils! Leon Löwentraut Leon quickly developed a style of his own, which his latest works embody. He paints huge canvases, laid flat on the ground, with acrylics applied so thickly that if he were to paint on an easel, the colours would run. He favours the quick drying time of acrylics over oils – “I am too impatient to paint with oils!” he openly admitted. Leon met with critical success at the tender age of 15, when he first showed 24
his paintings in Munich. He has since held wildly successful solo shows in London and Hamburg, and in fact all 13 of the paintings he brought to Singapore were sold before the exhibition’s official opening. Clearly, savvy art collectors have woken up to the phenomenon of Leon. THE ART OF HAPPINESS Looking at Leon’s neon-bright paintings, bursting with exuberant colour and almost always featuring faces exuding emotion, you cannot help but feel enlivened and uplifted. The life force seems to emanate from his paintings. We asked him why he focuses only on positive emotions. “I don’t like sad paintings. People want to be uplifted,” said Leon. When asked to elaborate on his personal philosophy of art and of life in general, he replied: “You should never live in the past. If you keep saying, life was better then, you might as well shoot yourself. You must believe the best is to come.” IDOLS AND HEROES Leon elaborated on his well-known adulation of Pablo Picasso. “Picasso is my idol. He lived for 91 years,
I don’t like sad paintings. People want to be uplifted. Leon Löwentraut and all his life he was ‘current’. Though he had so many styles, almost all of his paintings are colourful and bright,” said Leon. On living muses and mentors, Leon divulged the names of two unlikely heroes, Karl Lagerfeld and Justin Bieber. “Justin Bieber is my idol. Despite the critics, he never stopped chasing his dreams,” said Leon. “Karl Lagerfeld has a style and a personality that is awesome. I can listen to his interviews on YouTube for hours.” Leon, we could have listened to you for hours… Thank you for the blast of joy your pictures brought into our lives. We look forward (never back – you’ve gotten us believing the best is yet to be) to your next exhibition in Singapore.
Leon’s Painting Party On the morning of Saturday 2 April, German teen art sensation Leon Löwentraut led an interactive painting session with the children of Swiss Club Members. As you can see, the morning’s session yielded a riot of exuberant art, bursting with colour and creativity. View two of the kids' collaborations with Leon in the Family Suite and in the corridor on Level 3 of The Guesthouse.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Joining the Swiss Club Was an Easy Decision for the Hagmanns Roger Hagmann joined the Swiss Club in January this year, with his wife Huyen and two sons, Thien An and Thien Phu, aged five and a half and almost four years old. FIRST IMPRESSIONS LAST Roger, who travels frequently for work and was formerly based in Vietnam, recalled dining at the Swiss Club ten years ago when a former boss and Member took Roger to dinner at the Jungle Bar during a business trip to Singapore. Roger vividly recalled thinking, “Wow, nice place!”
Wow, nice place! Roger Hagmann ALL IN FAVOUR The Swiss Club was the Hagmanns’ choice not only because of that fond decade-old memory, but also because as a Swiss national, Roger has an obvious affinity with the culture. Other factors
that clinched their decision was the fact that the boys’ school, the Swiss School (SSiS), is literally “just down the road”. Huyen added that her boys often meet their school friends at the Swiss Club, likening it to a second family and a second home.
The boys often meet their school friends at the Swiss Club. GOOD FEEDBACK ON FOOD The Hagmanns gave the Clubs' food rave reviews. Huyen, who hails from Hanoi, enjoyed the recent Vietnamese promotion. She declared it – “Very good!” High praise indeed from a native cook. Roger loves the Rösti, while the boys love the Swiss food and the kids’ menu. From the sound of it, there is nothing the Hagmanns’ don’t enjoy about the Club. We certainly enjoyed meeting this lovely family!
LOVING EVERY MINUTE AND ASPECT When we asked Roger, Huyen and the boys what they enjoyed most about the Club, the answers flew fast and freely. The boys love the swimming pool, Huyen appreciates the facilities and in fact had just signed up for aqua-biking classes, and Roger is drawn to the spaciousness and the greenery. Huyen added that she intends to enrol the boys in swimming lessons, and the younger one wants to take tennis lessons. 25

Daniel Elber
Helps Build a Future for Indonesian Children An inspiring talk on a long-term charitable programme called ‘Future for Children’ was presented by Daniel Elber at the Swiss Club on 1 March from 7pm to 11pm.
COURAGE, CONVICTION AND VISION Daniel, a former high-ranking Manager at Swiss Bank UBS, engaged his audience with the story of his personal mission to improve the quality of life for children and families in the village of Muntigunung in Indonesia. Daniel’s project started in 2004 in Switzerland. His team have been working with the renowned aid organisation Dian Desa from Indonesia and the Balinese University. The ‘Future for Children’ project aims for long-term change as opposed to shortterm band-aid fixes. It helps parents find employment so that they can provide for their children, educate them and set a positive example for them to follow. BEGGING FOR CHANGE Muntigunung, in the very dry north of Bali, consists of 36 small hamlets housing slightly over 1,000 families and a total of around 5,800 people. No water during eight months of the year, no jobs, no
income, illiteracy and a very high child and mother mortality rate have conspired to plunge the local population into abject poverty. The women commonly resort to begging in the richer south, where tourists congregate. The more children they have in tow, the more successful their begging efforts are. To break this cycle, ‘Future for Children’ has built a rainwater harvesting system that liberates the population from the daily chore of pumping water. It has also established many social enterprises that gainfully employ the adults, including the older and weaker members, in manual labour. The efforts are bearing fruit, and the producers are taking pride in the production of sellable products, including cashew nut, rosella and palm sugar growing and processing, basket, beachbag and hammock production. Others have been trained as eco-tour trekking guides. To date, more than 220 jobs have been created. Nearly 50% of the villages have a sustainable year-round water supply. More than 25% of families have access to toilets. Two project managers from the medical faculty of the Udayana University are overseeing a pilot project to improve the health of all women of reproductive age in two hamlets… Change is happening!
OVERCOMING THE OBSTACLES Along the way, Daniel faced many hurdles, from understanding the needs of the village to navigating political issues and bribes. However, Daniel surmounted all obstacles in his path, proving his patience and tenacity in wanting to make a difference – the tagline of the presentation. Today, ‘Future for Children’ has approximately 400 employees, and is growing from strength to strength. It is steadily approaching its long-term goal of creating 1,000 jobs, which will make the people of Muntigunung financially independent. FOOD FOR THOUGHT, FOLLOWED BY GREAT FOOD Daniel’s presentation was followed by an amazing dinner comprising Indonesian and Swiss-inspired dishes by Chef Adrian, imparting a truly Balinese flavour to the experience. You can view footage on our Twitter (#swissclubsing) and facebook page (/swissclubsingapore) to find out how you can make a difference and participate in this endeavour. For more information, contact Daniel Elber at danielelber@hotmail.com. 27

MEET A STAFFER
Chef Jacky Senior Sous Chef Jacky Lim has been with the Swiss Club since 2007. The Oktoberfest project is his pride and joy, and when Members praise his food, he never fails to feel happy.
A SECOND HOME AND FAMILY Malaysian-born Jacky became a Singapore citizen in 1993. Before joining the Swiss Club, he cooked in Chinese restaurants, hotels and cafes. In his spare time, Jacky enjoys bowling and jogging, and loves to eat out in search of new ideas. He appreciates the flat organisation at the Swiss Club. “Our Executive Chef Adrian often asks for my opinion and welcomes input. One mind cannot think of everything,” said Chef Jacky. 28
Chef Jacky also praised the camaraderie among colleagues. Ah Chye, the Junior Sous Chef, Phillip Wong, the Chef de Partie, and Margaret Chiang, a member of the service staff, are cherished colleagues who were at the Club prior to his joining. “The Swiss Club is my second home and family now,” said Chef Jacky. FINEST HOURS, HAPPIEST MOMENTS Jacky takes special pride in Oktoberfest, which he organises from setup to supervision. He also thrives on feedback. “When it’s a successful event without any hiccups, with good feedback from Members, I feel great,” shared Jacky.
The Swiss Club is my second home and family now.
Chef Jacky.
When pressed for recommendations, Jacky praised the Asian dishes. He also urges Members to try the popular and ever-changing monthly promotions. FUTURE PLANS When asked of his plans for the future, Jacky quickly responded: “I hope to work here until I retire.” We hope so, too, Jacky.
