FROM THE EDITOR

GENERAL Club Management, Staff and Reservations Committee From the Editor Welcomes and Farewells Opening Hours A Word from the Committee A Message from the General Manager

Dear Members, Chances are, you are looking forward to a summer break (that’s summer as we in the northern hemisphere know it), if not already enjoying it. For those who are having a ‘stay-cation’ at home, there really could be no better place than Singapore, and the Swiss Club in particular. The Club often reminds me of some boutique heritage hotel, with its

slowly whirring fans and shady corners. If walls had ears, I can only imagine the tales those walls have heard over the years… This issue coincides with arguably the most important occasion of the year for the Swiss Club – Swiss National Day. Those Members who have attended the evening gathering, and witnessed the reflected flames of the bonfire flickering

in the wonder-filled eyes of the children, and heard the live rendition of the Swiss national anthem resonate through the balmy evening air, will already know what I’m talking about. If you’ve never been, you must come and exerience this amazing evening! Inside this issue you’ll read about the new multicourt, and receive an invitation to attend the Annual General Meeting. You’ll also discover a fairly easy way to tackle that tummy

But that theory’s wearing thin… unlike me!) Happy reading, happy holidays, Happy Swiss National Day – and, of course, Happy National Day to all Singaporeans, permanent and temporary!

SWISS CLUB

A WORD FROM THE COMMITTEE

Dear Members and Friends of the Swiss Club, During the first half of this year, you would have observed a number of smaller upgrading projects in progress, the details of which were provided by Anantha in the last edition of RELAX. They were undertaken to meet Government regulations – or simply to enhance facilities within the Club grounds – without limiting larger projects in the future.

Further improvements, both general and regulatory, are still to be made – particularly in the Pergola and Jungle Bar areas. Rather than doing ‘patchwork-type’ modifications, the Committee is looking at options involving the whole building – including restaurants, kitchen, offices, washrooms, etc.

With the demolition of the Squash Hall and the replacement of the large awnings by the Tennis Courts and the Pool, the remaining structures are all within the GFA limits and no additional development charges are due to URA. Further improvements, both general and regulatory, are still to be made – particularly in the Pergola and Jungle Bar areas. Rather than doing ‘patchworktype’ modifications, the Committee is looking at options involving the whole building – including restaurants, kitchen, offices, washrooms, etc. Whilst a large part of the funds obtained through the sale of surplus land must be set aside, a substantial amount should be invested into making our Club attractive and enjoyable for the years to come. Following up on the January presentation at the Rifle Lounge, we are currently talking to experts in the field to compare the Club’s current status to the perceived future needs and expectations of our Members. Those attendees who indicated their interest to participate in a group to work on these plans will be involved as and when the Committee has completed the groundwork. Property tax bills have increased substantially from 2009 onwards. A subcommittee, with the support of a tax specialist, has filed annual notices of objection and remains in discussions with IRAS to find a mutually acceptable solution.

6

Martin Silberstein has decided to step down as President of the Club, effective 30 June 2017, at the closing of the Financial Year 2016/2017, after an exceptionally long 12 years of distinguished service. An appreciation of Martin’s contributions to the Club will appear in the next issue of this magazine. A new President, as well as some current (extending) and new Committee Members will be formally elected at the forthcoming AGM. While a number of Members have already indicated their willingness to join the Committee, no Presidential candidates have stepped forward. If you are a Swiss national and feel you possess the necessary leadership skills, or know of a Member whom you consider fit for the role, please contact secretary@swissclub.org.sg. In closing, I wish you all a relaxing summer break, be it ‘on the island’ – possibly exploring the Club’s facilities with a Summer Membership – or overseas. Looking forward to welcoming you back – to celebrate Swiss National Day on 5 August, at the Oktoberfest from 20 to 24 September, or at the AGM on 25 September. All these events deserve a special place on your calendar! Sincerely yours,

M. Schweizer

SWISS CLUB

A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members, It’s time for a well-deserved summer break! Although Singapore provides constant summer, this time of year normally means overseas trips back home for most Members and their families. The Club transforms into a quieter oasis, as the daily buzz from energetic schoolchildren is no longer heard and other routine activities come to a standstill. Yet, new faces and families appear, as the Club welcomes Summer Members for a period of two months from mid-June till mid-August. I take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to all of you, with best wishes from the Committee, management and all of our staff, for an enjoyable time at the Club. Reflecting on this time last year, the Club’s financial year was again met with many challenges, as the softer global economy impacted similar trends in regards to membership growth, entrance fees and annual revenues to sustain the cost of manpower and services. We are committed to improving the Club and its facilities, yet have had to make adjustments to operational hours and some services at Pergola and Jungle Bar to align overall costs. (Please refer to revised operating hours on page 5.) That said, the newly refurbished multicourt, upgraded pool furniture and the relaxed dress code for Saturday luncheons will hopefully make Club life even better. The summer period also provides management with the opportunity to address mandatory annual maintenance matters such as tree pruning, painting works and electrical appliance repairs. Kindy mark your diary for Monday 24 July, as the Club will be ‘closed’ for our annual electrical power grid shutdown and testing, as well as the Swiss Club annual staff party. This provides our staff with a well-deserved day off and an opportunity to have fun together with colleagues whom they may not work closely with on a day-to-day basis. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause on the day. A big thank you from the entire staff, as we greatly appreciate this day together.

8

With change, comes change. As you may be aware, the Club’s Committee are looking for new Members to join in the work that goes on behind the scenes, and to help develop strategies to move the Club forward. These changes are ongoing and more information will be communicated closer to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday 25 September 2017. Also, a note of appreciation and a heartfelt thank you to Christelle Taillens, our Marketing Manager of the last three years, who has decided to seek career opportunities outside of the Club. She has made valuable contributions to many excellent initiatives related to driving membership, including our Open House Day, Summer Membership, Food & Beverage promotions and the famous Oktoberfest event. The development of our current Club website, the RELAX magazine and our weekly newsletter are among the many projects she has spearheaded. Christelle, good luck in your future endeavours – and do stop by the Club to say hello once in a while to both Members and former colleagues! Timothy Rajadurai, or Tim as he may be known to some, our Sports Manager, has also decided to explore further development in sports in conjunction with his company, Active Fitness. Timothy will remain as the Club wellness provider for the gym, bootcamps, aqua biking, spinning and so forth, and hand over the administration of daily duties to a new Sports Manager in the coming month. Timothy, we are happy that you remain committed to the Club and look forward to working with you in your new capacity. Thank you for all you have done to date. On that note, have a fantastic summer break – and see you all upon your return!

Carsten Kjeldmann General Manager carsten.kjeldmann@swissclub.org.sg "Swiss Club, the Home for All Nationalities"

I take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to all of you, with best wishes from the Committee, management and all of our staff, for an enjoyable time at the Club.

The Swiss Club Wants YOU! We are looking for energetic, conscientious and dedicated Members to step up and join the Swiss Club Committee. Due to relocations and vacancies caused by changes in professional and personal circumstances, we have a number of positions waiting to be filled including the very important role of Swiss Club President. It is with great regret and immense gratitude that we must inform you that our current President Mr Martin Silberstein is stepping down at the upcoming Annual General Meeting on 25 September 2017, after 12 years of loyal service to our Club. If you would like to take a more active role in shaping the future of your Club, and if you are willing to dedicate some time every month on Club matters, you are just the person we are looking for. The Club Committee meets monthly and ad-hoc whenever needed. The Committee members very much enjoy working as a team and value everyone’s opinion. Committee decisions are made by simple majority votes on a one member – one vote basis. We would very much welcome more diversity in the Committee by adding again Non-Swiss members and more female Committee members. Please note that according to our Club Rules, the President and Vice-President must be Swiss nationals. Don’t worry – you don’t have to be a mathematical genius or a captain of your industry to join. Only a love for the Swiss Club is a must! Interested? Please do come forward and email your name, a short profile and any special areas of expertise, to: secretary@swissclub.org.sg Thank you very much for your interest and we will be in touch!

Tasting Notes

Piccini Chianti Reserva ‘Selezione Oro’ has a lively red colour verging on vibrant crimson with ageing. Of intense and persistent fruity bouquet, flavour develops sinuously, with subtle notes of vanilla and a dash of spice coming through in the end. Warm palate with soft tannins, ‘Selezione Oro’ reveals itself in velvety shades, rich in texture, with a long aftertaste. It is a wine of profound complexity, harmonious and elegant.

EVENTS

A Heartfelt, Art-filled Event On 13 May, the eve of Mother’s Day, the Swiss Club held a Mother’s Day floral art workshop in collaboration with Epoch Times, an Asian business and lifestyle publication. A healthy turnout of 26 participants, a mix of Members and the public, attended the relaxed event in the Rifle Lounge.

This beautiful environment is the ideal setting for a workshop. OF PETALS AND PAINT The workshop was run by the renowned artist Lim Zhi Wei, who goes by the nickname ‘Limzy’, with the help of two assistants, Sharon and Cheryl. The fee of $155 per couple (generally an adult and a child) included light refreshments, teatime treats, and materials to make a piece of framed floral art. Limzy is a professional artist and illustrator who likes to work in mixed media of watercolours and real preserved flowers, imported from Japan. Her exquisitely original work has caught the eye of big brands like Dior, Goldheart and H&M. Grateful for her good fortune, Limzy likes to give back to the community by sharing her love of art and nature with 16

Limzy anyone who’s interested. She clearly enjoyed running the workshop at the Swiss Club. “This beautiful environment is the ideal setting for a workshop,” said Limzy. “The idea is that everyone enjoys a fruitful and therapeutic experience, and takes home a special gift for mothers.” Epoch Times’ Marketing Manager, Sharon Lee, added, “We love this venue. It’s very conducive to art and relaxation. This is our first collaboration with the Swiss Club and it won’t be our last.” BEAUTIFUL RESULTS AND TREASURED KEEPSAKES We spoke to Swiss Club Member Elizabeth Thomson, aged 8, from New

Zealand, who was attending the workshop with her friend and classmate, Lydia Bens. “The experience has been really fun. I learned a lot – and I learned a lot from my mistakes,” shared Elizabeth, who was making a Mother’s Day gift for her mum. “For example, I never knew that you could cut a rose in half and make a lovely design,” she added.

This is our first collaboration with the Swiss Club and it won’t be our last.

Sharon Lee Marketing Manager, Epoch Times

No doubt, every mum who received the fruits of the day's loving labours had a blooming beautiful Mother's Day!

A Beautiful Brunch On 14 May, a sold-out Mother’s Day Brunch saw some 87 Members and a handful of guests lingering over a sumptuous spread that spanned Arbenz and Rifle Lounge. The beautiful day was filled with stunning food, magical moments and touching tributes. SEMI-BUFFET, TOTALLY DELICIOUS The brunch combined a lavish buffet spread of starters and desserts with a choice of main courses. The buffet in the Rifle Lounge included an eggs station and a tartar bar. We have it on good authority – straight from the chefs manning the stations – that our Members favour scrambled eggs over omelettes, and prefer salmon tartar to tuna and beef. The centre table was laden with lobsters, mussels, jumbo prawns and oysters, glistening on a bed of ice, along with a vast array of cold cuts, cheese and sushi. Mains included a choice of Japanese scallops, Angus roast beef and seared barramundi, all served with white asparagus and tempting sides. A childfriendly buffet line included spaghetti, chicken nuggets and cheese sausages. The dessert table housed the ever-popular chocolate fountain, crème brûlée shooters, lime panna cotta with blueberries, jewelcoloured fresh berries with pouring cream, and more. What a feast! Those we spoke to had nothing but praise for the well-organised brunch. Perhaps the words of new Member, Jane Brunner, best summed up the sentiments of those gathered. “It’s very nice… very good… excellent… perfect, in fact!” said Jane. “And I agree,” added her husband Daniel.

MEMBERS’ MESSAGES FOR MUMS “My Mum’s beautiful. She’s the best mum in the world!” Yves Brunner, aged 7

GOOEY, SQUIDGY FUN WITH CLAY As usual, an engaging and inventive kids’ activity was organised on the lawn. This time, the NeuroCeramics™ team from Da Vinci Group conducted clay making, including a chance to make a heart-shaped pendant for Mum. The kids clearly loved the feel of the cool, slippery wet clay yielding to their touch, and all those assembled around the trestle tables when we dropped by were “repeat customers”, according to Marketing Manager Dina Jitendra. “It’s such a tactile and sensorial treat that the moment they touch it, they’re hooked!” said Dina. To every mother, grandmother and mother figure, we truly hope that your Mother’s Day was made as special as you are.

“Thank you for being there for me when I need you.” Lucie Aste, aged 11 “Thank you for taking me to football training three times a week.” Etienne Aste, aged 7 “I like to cook with my mummy. Thanks, Mummy, for being a great cook!” Lara Kitowski, aged 8 “Thanks, Mama, for being very sporty and encouraging me to play sports.” Sarah Kleiterp, aged 10 “Thank you for always being there.” Celine Schick, aged 16 “Thank you for supplying the candy!” Larissa Schick, aged 14 17

Father’s Day Messages from Young Members “I love Daddy because he’s very nice!”

Father’s Day at the Swiss Club

A Downpour of Rain and an Outpouring of Love Though all did not go according to plan due to stormy weather, the Father’s Day brunch on Sunday 18 June ended well. Quick-thinking staff switched the venue from an alfresco setting to Arbenz, and the turnout of 58 topped that of the previous year. SIZZLING STEAKS AND ICE COLD BEER The planned barbecue menu became an indoor grill buffet, with crowd-pleasing dishes such as Boneless Chicken Leg with Cajun Spices, Spare Ribs with BBQ Sauce, and Marinated Lamb Chops with Rosemary Gravy. The feast was washed down with plentiful beer and wine, including a free beer for every dad. Feedback on the food was overwhelmingly positive. The chicken, lamb chops and ribs got rave reviews,

as did the dessert bar and the apple strudel in particular. The hot chocolate also got a special mention. A FAMILY CLUB AT HEART It was a heartwarming occasion, with touching interactions and many hugs exchanged between fathers and children of all ages, from the littlest toddlers to grown young men and women. It confirmed, once again, that the Swiss Club is first and foremost a club for families.

Anastasia Senn

“I love Daddy because he helps me with my homework and any problems I have.”

Alexandra Senn

“I love you and I would like to thank you for nurturing me into the man I am today.”

Xavier Quirk

“Je t’aime, Papa!”

Tylor and Grace Cole

“Happy Father’s Day… I love Daddy because he’s so nice!”

Louis Butler

“I love Papa because he plays with me!”

These inspiring words perfectly capture the ‘secret’ behind the achievements of our Swiss Club junior players in the recent Lacoste Junior Team Tennis League (JTTL). SWISS CLUB STARS REACH FOR THE STARS It may not be the ITF or ATP junior tournament, but it’s considered one of the most significant junior tournaments in Singapore – the Lacoste Junior Team Tennis League 2017. Season 1 recently ended with our Swiss Club Junior teams battling against 94 other junior teams across the island.

PADEL TUTORIAL:

The Bandeja, Explained

Our padel coach, Lucas, explains the fundamentals of an effective but often misunderstood move – the bandeja (as it is known in Spanish), or trey.

ONLY IN PADEL The shot known as the bandeja is very unique and does not exist in tennis or squash. The most important thing about this shot is that its objective is to not lose the net. The most common mistake is trying to win the point with this mostly defensive shot, by trying to accelerate more than is possible with an awkward body position. Since padel requires attacking on the net, the bandeja is always shot when the player is moving back. It should always be done with side steps in a natural forehand position – left foot forward if you are right-handed, right foot forward if you are left-handed), keeping both elbows up to shoulder level, and hitting the ball between the shoulder and head height. The impact point should be always to the player’s side and at the same line of the forward foot, with all the strength of the shot coming from the racketholding shoulder and always finishing the movement with the top of the racket aiming where you want to direct the shot.

This is a relatively easy shot that gets complicated when its objective is misunderstood. Keep in mind that its mission is to not lose the net, and try to give as little bounce back as possible. GIVE PADEL A SHOT Padel is a highly social sport, and I am pleased to report that we are seeing new Members and guests playing every week. If you are already a Member, don’t be shy – come and try this very easy and addictive sport! Next season, we are starting a new junior training programme for all ages and levels, so no experience is no excuse not to play padel!

“I Want to Get Rid of My Tummy, But…” “I want to get rid of my tummy, but I do not want to change what I eat or stop drinking. Can you help me?” is a question I am frequently asked. I say – yes but are you willing to do some ‘homework’, because seeing me once a week is not enough. And I’m always met with a ‘yes’! SLOWLY, STEADILY, SURELY… How do I do that and breathe at the same time? Good question. You can start with simple floor exercises to learn how to activate your TA, and then move into doing the same movements in a seated and standing position.

WHEN THE BELLY WON’T BUDGE… A year goes by, your body changes but the tummy has not shaped up the way you were hoping for. It’s still bulging out, and your love handles are still spilling over the waist of your pants. Spot reduction, unfortunately, is not a natural thing. Our bodies do not burn more fats in certain places than in others. Yes, they do store fats in some places more than others, but that also means that it’s harder to burn off the fats in those areas. However, without drifting too far away, let me get back to the tummy. Our abdominal region is a very interesting part of our body. It’s the part the majority of us feel most selfconscious about, and very often it’s a part of the body that impacts our daily moods. It can be a source of hunger, bloat, aches and pains, and so on. While many people struggle to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, there is still hope for trimming that waistline. Our abdominal region has a number of layers of muscle that form the walls of our stomach. We are going to focus on one main muscle that’ll help you pull in the waistline and really strengthen the abdominals.

While many people struggle to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, there is still hope for trimming that waistline. LET’S TALK ABOUT TRANSVERSE ABDONIMALS… The superficial layer we call our abs (aka 6/8 packs) is our rectus abdominals. This muscle does not play a role in creating a smaller waistline. It is the transverse abdominals (TA), the deepest layer of our abdominal wall, that we need to strengthen in order to tighten our waistline. The TA is a belt-like muscle that holds our abdominals in place. Chances are you have already activated it, every time you tried to suck in your tummy! By strengthening and consciously activating our TA, we are able to create a much tighter and slimmer midsection. Secondly, but more importantly, a stronger TA will give you a much stronger mid-section, which can often help ease any back pains you may have.

As you learn how to control your TA, you can repeat the same movements while walking, moving and during your dayto-day activities. You’ll gradually obtain greater control of it and strengthen it as you go.

A SIMPLE EXERCISE TO STRENGTHEN YOUR TA Lie flat on your back. Bend your knees and create a small space between the ground and the small of your back. Now suck your stomach in and hold it tight. Hold it for 10 seconds and breathe normally. As you get more natural in doing it, increase the period you hold it in for. As you find it easier, move into a seated position and do the same thing, then standing and then incorporate it in exercises like crunches and leg lifts. Soon you’ll have a flat tummy!

Ending the School Year with a Splash The last few months of the school year have been a busy time for the Swiss Club swimmers. Here is a summary of our recent achievements, as well as a preview of what we have planned for the second half of the year. SWISS SHARKS SHINE!

Gold and Diamond League In the month of May we organised the Gold league (19 May) and the Diamond league (12 May). Our Swiss Sharks raced against other teams from aquaDucks. Besides bringing home a lot of medals, many swimmers improved their times. Neptune League On Sunday 23 April, the Swim team went to the British Club. On Sunday 21 May, we had the third race in the league at SICC. The team of SICC was very strong but ours swimmers had a lot of PB. Award Swimming On Friday 9 June, we took part in another round of award swimming. The children who signed up demonstrated the progress they had made over the last year. Afterwards, they answered some theory questions about safety around the pool and received their next level awards.

FREE ADULTS’ SWIMMING LESSON IN AUGUST

Always wanted to improve your swimming? During the month of August, we are offering unlimited free lessons/ training sessions for every adult at the Swiss Club. The lessons are every Friday from 8.30 – 9:30am. Please let us know your preferred date. Alternatively, let us know if you would prefer a day other than Friday and we will try to accommodate your request if there is sufficient demand.

LESSONS TO COMPLEMENT SCHOOL SWIMMING PROGRAMMES

A lot of international schools in Singapore offer swimming at school, which is a great development for the children. However, most schools’ swimming lessons consist of playing

games and developing life-saving skills. Usually the groups are large and children make little or slow progress in learning to swim. Therefore, we advise children to learn to swim in small groups during lessons at a swim school, to ensure that they are also advancing their swimming skills.

Celebrating 50 Years

INTE R EFROM S T THE NEWS

Our Jubilee Opening Event WHAT THE GUESTS SAID…

On the evening of 2 May 2017, exactly fifty years after the Swiss School in Singapore (SSiS) opened, the School initiated fifty days of celebrations to commemorate the jubilee, the School and its community of supporters. AN EMOTIONAL AND ENTERTAINING EVENING

Clearly, going by the response of our community, SSiS is truly cherished by many who have worked here, studied here or who have supported the School in one way or another. Registration for the event took place under our beloved tree in the courtyard. Many guests took a moment to write congratulatory wishes on posters taped around the tree’s trunk. Guests then proceeded to our ‘50 People in 50 Years’ photo exhibition and enjoyed a welcome drink sponsored by the Embassy of Switzerland. The evening’s programme included a diverse collection of guests, several of whom traveled from afar to join us: Our Master of Ceremonies, Jonathan Carter (Head of Admissions at our partner school, United World College of Southeast Asia), led us with energy and wit through the evening. Former and current students provided

entertainment in the form of music and theatre. True to tradition, we closed the event with our touching school song.

FOOD, GLORIOUS SWISS FOOD!

The Swiss Club added to the ‘Swissness’ of the event of course and provided professional catering services to the 300 guests. The raclette stations certainly created feelings of nostalgia for many guests.

WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH…

A simple ‘thank you’ cannot convey our gratitude for all who made the event happen. We would like to thank the many volunteers who worked behind the scenes, starting well over a year ago, generously donating their time and energy to create a memorable evening for all. Lastly, we also wish to recognise and thank again our corporate sponsors who helped monetarily or otherwise to make our 50th Anniversary a success for the school and the Swiss community.

“50-Jahre SSiS wurde mit einem schönen, vielseitigen und bestens organisierten Fest gefeiert. Die Anwesenheit der zahlreichen Gäste aus Singapur und der Schweiz und insbesondere der ersten Lehrerin und einigen Schülern der allerersten Klasse machte diesen Anlass zu einem speziellen Event. Herzlichen Dank!” Barbara Sulzer Smith CEO, educationsuisse “I was really impressed by how the GESS sports hall was transformed beyond recognition for the event. [..] Well done to the Organizing Committee! The turnout was impressive: we met former teachers from decades ago ... This shows just how SSiS has connected so many people across time and geographical divide.” Raymond Samter Former Teacher

Looking Back, Looking

Reflecting on 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations Between Switzerland and Singapore

In 2017, Switzerland and Singapore celebrate their ‘50 years of Diplomatic Relations’ jubilee. In this issue of RELAX, the Embassy of Switzerland would like to take you on a little journey back through time, visiting some of the milestones along the way.

1967

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

On 9 October 1967, the Swiss Federal Council decided to officially establish diplomatic relations with the young nation of Singapore by transforming the Swiss Consulate in Singapore into an Embassy. Then-Consul Heinz Suter was given the title of Chargé d’Affaires a.I.

At this point in time, the Embassy’s offices were housed on the 17th floor of an office building on Orchard Road. FINALLY, A FITTING HOME

In 1979, Switzerland rented land on the premises of the Swiss Club, in the lush green surroundings of the hills of Bukit Timah. On this piece of land, the new office building – which is still being used today – was built. The Embassy was opened in 1987 and the newly arrived Mr. Kurt O. Wyss was

the first Ambassador of Switzerland to Singapore, followed by Jürg Streuli (1991-1997), Raymond Loretan (19972002), Daniel Woker (2002-2008) and Jörg Reding (2008-2012). The Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore at 1 Swiss Club Link, built in 1987 © Embassy of Switzerland/Thomas Lim

HIGH-RANKING VISITORS

Though economic ties augmented largely throughout the first decades of Singaporean nationhood, it was not until 1991 that the first official visit from Switzerland to Singapore took place. Federal Councillor Pascal Delamuraz met with his counterpart, the then Minister of Trade and Industry, and today Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong. 1996 – 2016 Over the last decade, the frequency of these official visits has intensified tremendously, indicating Singapore’s growing importance with regard to Switzerland’s financial and economic interests. Barely a year goes by without a Swiss Federal Councillor or State Secretary visiting Singapore, or a Singaporean Minister paying a visit to Switzerland. The highlights have been

THE FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN NATIONS STRENGTHENS

Over the past 50 years, the relations between Switzerland and Singapore have evolved and grown. Today, we count 5000 Swiss in Singapore, making Singapore one of the largest Swiss colonies in Asia. On the economic level, over 400 Swiss companies are present in the City-State.

2017 THE CELEBRATIONS BEGIN

This year, we celebrate the 50 years of our diplomatic relations with a variety of official, cultural and social festivities. On the political stage, Ambassador Thomas Kupfer welcomed three official delegations from Switzerland. In March, the Bureau of the Council of States of the Swiss Confederation, led by its President Ivo Bischofberger, visited the Singapore Parliament and some of the important Swiss Pillars in Singapore. In April, Switzerland’s Finance Minister Ueli Maurer led a high-ranking financial delegation to Asia, with Singapore as one of the trip’s highlights. In June, our Defence Minister Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin stayed in Singapore for the Shangri-La Dialogue and a bilateral visit. Culturally, this year’s festivities were launched in January with an open-air concert by the talented Swiss-Singaporean pianist Rahel Senn in the Botanic Gardens. Another highlight was the SwitzerlandSingapore Football Festival in April on the iconic Float@Marina. Twenty teams of boys and girls competed against the backdrop of Singapore’s stunning city skyline. In addition, the Embassy published a booklet of 30 postcards, depicting highlights of the Swiss presence in Singapore.

INTEREST MEET A MEMBER

A Swiss-loving Dutch Family in Singapore Josephine Feilzer and Arthur Klatte are a blend of European origins and global influences. Husband and wife both work in banking – Josephine for an Australian bank and Arthur for a Swiss one. In 2009, after their last port-of-call in Hong Kong, they dropped anchor in Singapore, joined the Swiss Club and took on board a lovely daughter, 6-year-old Quirine. Both mother and daughter are learning Chinese – and the whole family spoke highly of the Swiss Club.

It’s the nicest club in Singapore, and we’ve seen them all.

Josephine Feilzer

“The gym is compact but has everything I need,” said Arthur. “The soccer field is also excellent.” JOSEPHINE’S SWISS CONNECTION Josephine explained that she has a special affinity with Switzerland, not only because she studied in Neuchatel. Her birthday also falls on Swiss National Day – so Happy Birthday, Josephine, for the 1st! The open-minded couple explained that being Dutch in Singapore means you’re automatically part of the small Dutch community, especially if your child attends the Dutch school (behind the Swiss Club). Having lived abroad for over 14 years, Josephine explained that their circle of friends is quite international and so they feel right at home among the mix of nationalities at the Swiss Club. Josephine and Arthur recalled that they chose the Swiss Club on the basis of merit, after doing a recce of all the Clubs in Singapore. “It’s the nicest club in Singapore,” stated Josephine, “and we’ve seen them all.” SPORTY FAMILY FACILITIES Josephine and Arthur had nothing but praise for the sports facilities of the Swiss Club. 30

“I picked up tennis from scratch, and the coaches have been very patient with me,” shared Josephine. “You can play late in the evening, and the astro turf courts are among the best in Singapore.” Josephine and Arthur spoke very highly of the swimming lessons conducted by aquaDucks at the Swiss Club. They are especially grateful for the fact that Quirine could get her Dutch diplomas, which are required for sailing lessons back home. VISITORS LOVE THE GUESTHOUSE Arthur mentioned that they have been using The Guesthouse for accommodating visiting family and friends. “They always enjoy it here, and find it good value for money,” he said. “They really love the breakfast at the pool!” As for seasonal events, unfortunately, Arthur and Josephine haven’t (yet) participated in too many. Apart from the occasional raclette dinner and new members’ welcome cocktail event, they have attended the annual lion dances at Chinese New Year, and this year’s Valentine’s Dinner.

“We never celebrate Valentine’s Day,” said Josephine, “but this year we did – at the Swiss Club, because another Dutch couple recommended it. And I must say, it was excellent. The music, the decorations, the food, it was really very well done.” After all this praise, we wondered if there was anything that these model Members found lacking. Under pressure, Josephine admitted that they miss the chicken rice and the Szechuan chicken from the previous menu. Nonetheless, Arthur added, “A lot of improvement has been made in the presentation of the food, with new plates and menus. It makes the food more appetising, and guests are really impressed.” Thank you, Family Feilzer-Klatte. It was a genuine pleasure to meet you!

FAMILY DINING RECOMMENDATIONS Josephine recommends… Butter Chicken Arthur recommends… the Swiss Burger Quirine recommends… Chicken Nuggets … and Food for Thought from Quirine "I'm six now, but I want to live till I'm 100. When I'm 99, I'll go backwards."

INTEREST MEET A STAFFER

She’s Everywhere! Christelle Taillens, the Swiss Club’s Marketing Manager since July 2014, is in charge of this very magazine that you are reading, as well as the Club’s advertising, branding, menu design, ticketing and… you name it. She’s literally everywhere you look!

ONE YEAR TURNS INTO 16… Christelle came to Singapore at the age of 21, on a summer holiday, and ended up studying Audio Engineering. After graduating with first class honours, she worked in the media industry, theatre, radio and television. She also taught audio engineering at a private institution, where she was the Head of Department, and dabbled in acting and voice work. You might have glimpsed a hint of ‘Asian’ in Christelle’. That’s because her mother is Vietnamese. Exotic Christelle originally hails from Lausanne, Switzerland, but her family moved to Basel when she was four years old. She creates even more confusion when she tells people that she recently married a Pinoy, who is American at heart. She also loves boxing – so don’t cross her!

NEVER A DULL MOMENT Though some might think that moving from audio engineering and teaching into marketing requires a quantum leap, Christelle claims that, on the contrary, it was an opportunity to apply all her previously learned skills. “It mixed my administrative skills with my creative side, and added a dash of hospitality. For me, there is never a dull moment at the Club!” shared Christelle.

kids, who recognise me and come and hug me just to say hello, and having Members share their day and thoughts with me. I like this family affair that’s going on at the Club, if I can call it that,” shared Christelle. Clearly, Christelle loves the Swiss Club. And, going by the number of Members who stop to chat whenever we meet her at Pergola, the Swiss Club loves Christelle!

Not surprisingly, Christelle also loves the location of her workplace. “The setting and grounds are exquisite. Compared to my previous job, where I barely get to see the sun and get stuck in a room with fake lights, this is a huge improvement!” said Christelle. Blessed with a great personality and a flair for languages, Christelle greatly enjoys meeting Members. “I especially love the
