The Day Santa Came to the Swiss Club
A Note from the Editor Dear Members Old and New, If you travelled during the holidays, welcome back to Singapore. For those who stayed put, I hope you had a wonderful Singaporean Christmas that was made all the more memorable for weaving in a little local culture. For those of you who are relatively new in town, going home probably feels like a return to all that is familiar. If you’ve been away for many years, you may experience a kind of inverted culture shock. After living in Singapore for over two decades, I developed a ‘new norm’ by which to benchmark everything else. I went from missing good old Aussie meat pies and fish and chips when I first moved to Singapore – to missing cheap and cheerful roti prata and carrot cake (the savoury kind) when I made my annual pilgrimage back to Australia. By now, the Christmas decorations in all the malls have been replaced or subtly modified to reflect the Chinese New Year of the Pig. Check out your horoscope in this issue – just for fun. Speaking of Chinese New Year, don’t miss the Club’s annual lion dance on Sunday 10 February, and book your table at the Club’s annual Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner on Monday 4 February. Happy Chinese New Year! Happy Valentine’s Day! Yours, Suzanne Lauridsen Editor, Relax RELAX is edited and designed by SPEcial Pte Ltd. Suzanne, Copy

A Word from the
Committee
“
We wish to build upon the heritage and ensure the Club provides enjoyment for our current Members and generations to come, as it has done for the past hundred-plus years.
Dear Fellow Members, Hope you all had a terrific festive season and a good entry to 2019 with loved ones and friends. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is William Forwood and I have been in Singapore since 2000. I have worked across Asia for 20 years in the fields of construction and project management, mainly in corporate offices, retail, hotels and industrial facilities. My wife and I have three children aged 16, 14 and 11 and we have been Members of the Swiss Club since July 2011. My role on the Committee within the Property and Masterplan portfolio includes reviewing ongoing projects with the Swiss Club Committee and the Club’s facilities team, though my main focus is on the Club’s current masterplan. With the upcoming refurbishment and redevelopment of the Club, the top priority is securing the Club’s facilities mix and financial sustainability. We wish to build upon the heritage and ensure the Club provides enjoyment for our current Members and generations to come, as it has done for the past hundred-plus years. The Club Committee, Management and the lead Architect have met for regular progress meetings since
the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September 2018 to further develop the designs and finalise submissions for all Singapore statutory approvals and safety regulations within the design scope presented. By now you should have received the notice of our forthcoming Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) to be held on 14 January 2019 at the Pavilion at 7.30pm. I encourage as many Members as possible to support this evening. Although funds were already approved at the AGM on 24 September 2018, this possible land sale would allow us not to have to draw funding from the long-term Land Fund capital. Likewise, should you be unable to attend please make use of the proxy form attached in the invitation letter. Meanwhile, may I wish you a wonderful beginning to 2019 and a Prosperous Year of the Pig to all our Asian Club Members. Yours Sincerely,
W. Forwood

A Message from the
General Manager Dear Members,
“
With this, I and my follow colleagues wish you all a fantastic two months ahead and a fabulous start to both the Western and Chinese New Year calendar.
Hope the Christmas season was festive and provided plenty of opportunities to visit family and relatives. Yuletide is a very magical time of year with all the sharing, kindness and caring which is often forgotten in our hectic day-to-day lives. With a new addition to my family, the above will be my resolution for 2019 – becoming a better ‘human’, towards myself and others. Taking a peek back at December, what fun we had at the Club celebrating our annual Christmas Light-up. We had arranged for ‘snow’, mulled wine and cookies and transformed the Club into a true wonderland. However, when the rain worsened beyond a mere drizzle, Pergola had to be used as an alternative venue. Luckily both the young musical duet and Santa himself managed to find their way to the alternative venue, so kids and adults alike could enjoy the drinks, snow and festive cheer. Thank you to all those families who supported the event, and to our staff and maintenance team for shifting the entire set-up. The following week, the Club was graced by Santa himself, gingerbread making and Swiss Grittibänz bread while the kids exchanged letters, songs and poetry in multiple languages. Last but not least, Christmas Brunch was a wonderful celebration with some 180 attendees, while New Year’s Eve concluded another exciting events calendar for the Swiss Club. In the coming months, you will experience many new activities related to health and fitness. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the Club’s new Sports and Recreation Executive Ms Jasmine Tan, who will work hand-in-hand with our sports contractors as well as Haresh Kumar who has taking on the role of Marketing & Communications Manager. This portfolio will
include new projects related to website development, membership awareness and the Club’s refurbishment project commencing in the summer of 2019. January and February also offer Quiz Nights every last Friday of the month. Do sign up and enjoy some lighthearted fun. Congratulations to the Swiss School team who won our very first Quiz Night! Champagne Brunch is now hosted every last Sunday of the month, so bring family and friends to Arbenz and relax amongst lush jungle away from the daily hustle and bustle of downtown. Movie nights, Valentine’s by the pool, an exhibition by the artist Carolyn Law, plus the annual spectacle of the auspicious Lion Dance as we usher in Chinese New Year are just some of the many offerings happening at your Club. With this, I and my follow colleagues wish you all a fantastic two months ahead and a fabulous start to both the Western and Chinese New Year calendar. Warmest regards and Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Season’s Greetings Dear Members of the Swiss Club in Singapore, Dear Readers of RELAX, As 2018 has come to an end, I can see it has been a year full of changes and yet filled with continuity. On a personal level, coming to Singapore has been a truly exciting transition that has opened my eyes to fantastic new horizons. Our Embassy has also seen many changes as several of our staff joined our team last year. It is a privilege for me to be able to count on a motivated team brimming with energy and ideas, who are already working in depth on our 2019 activities. Looking back at 2018, our Embassy saw a very lively year with no less than five high-level political visits, including our Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin and four of our State Secretaries. Following the visit in August of State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Pascale Baeriswyl for the ASEAN Foreign Minister meeting, we had the pleasure to welcome in November State Secretary for Economic Affairs Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch, State Secretary for International Finance Jörg Gasser and State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation Mauro Dell’Ambrogio. Their respective visits concerned the Belt and Road opportunities for Switzerland and Singapore as well as a working meeting with Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing, the Fintech Festival and the inauguration of the successful Swiss Pavilion, and the advancement of our partnerships with Singapore in science and education. A great example of fostering cultural exchange was the first Switzerland-Singapore Tennis Festival for children from international schools, local schools and tennis academies. This successful event took centre-stage at the Swiss Club and served as a fitting platform for us to promote sports, intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding. From a cultural point of view, we were happy to have Swiss musicians and artists like Veronica Fusaro, Joshua Monten, Geraldine Fadda and the Ensemble Phoenix Basel with us here in Singapore. Also the three film screenings supported by the Swiss Embassy ‘Die göttliche Ordnung’, ‘Mario Botta. Oltre lo spazio’ and ‘Die kleine Hexe’ were a great success and brought a little Swissness to the Lion City. The political visits as well as our numerous and diverse activities with other partners in all fields reflect not only the dynamism of the Swiss-Singapore relations, but their continuous strengthening. They parallel the growing importance of our Swiss community and institutions in the city-state. The Embassy looks forward to keeping the Swiss community informed about our upcoming activities and services through our website www.eda.admin.ch/singapore and Facebook page @SwissEmbassySingapore as well as through the quarterly newsletter – and, of course, through ‘Relax’. After such a positive year, we look forward to continuing on this stimulating path. Allow me, together with the Swiss Embassy team, to wish you a wonderful Chinese New Year holiday season and a 2019 filled with positive changes and continuity. Flowing Wine and Sparkling Conversations On Friday 30 November, the Rifle Lounge was the setting for one wonderful evening of two combined events – a Wine and Cheese Evening and a Welcome New Members networking session. FROM CHARDONNAY TO CHAMPAGNE AND BEYOND Commencing at 6pm and concluding at 11pm, the popular event attracted a full house of some 60 wine enthusiasts comprising Members, their guests and new Members. Over 100 labels from the cream of Singapore’s importers, distributors and retailers were available for bottomless sampling and for sale at below-retail prices. Experts were on hand to offer guidance and share the finer points of each wine, spirit and liqueur on offer.
We approached some of the new Members and asked them to say a few words of about themselves for the benefit of their fellow Members. We thank each of them for their cordial replies.
A superb mini buffet including charcuterie cuts, an imported cheese board with artisanal breads and a sumptuous creamy mushroom risotto kept the guests satisfied. WELCOME TO THE CLUB Approximately half of the attendees were new Members recruited during the Club’s recent National Day Membership promotion. A warm welcome by the Club’s Deputy President Adrian Jacklowsky set the tone of the evening and put everyone in a jovial mood. Existing Members were seen to be actively engaging new ones in lively conversations. No doubt the seeds of many new friendships were sown.
“We are a Singaporean family of three. We love the lush grounds and unique ambience of the Swiss Club, which distinguish it from the city clubs.” Andre and Veronica Misso

The Day Santa Came to the Swiss Club On Sunday 9 December, Mr Claus himself graced the Swiss Club. Though he had travelled far and from much colder climes, the jolly old man conducted himself with good humour despite showing signs of heat fatigue. No doubt it had something to do with the excellent behaviour and good manners of the charming children who welcomed him. AN EARLY CHRISTMAS FEAST A lip-smacking, mouth-watering luncheon menu was served on the day of Santa’s visit. Merry mains included honey-baked ham with apple sauce, soy ginger-glazed salmon with pomegranate and toasted almonds and Zurich-style sliced veal, along with kid-friendly favourites and healthy salads. Delicious desserts including chocolate Yule logs, coconut Yule logs and good old apple strudel completed the fabulous festive feast.
GINGERBREAD HOUSE MAKING While awaiting Santa’s arrival, a happy handful of talented families joined the gingerbread house making workshop. Look at their marvellous creations! IT’S REALLY SANTA! The highlight of the day was of course the arrival of Santa. Almost 40 boys and girls welcomed him with wide eyes, open mouths and squeals of excitement. Every child got to sit on his lap, have a chat and receive a present. Amazingly, Santa seemed to have known exactly what each child had wished for!
Almost every child put on a performance or had made a thoughtful gift or a beautiful card for Santa. Feast your eyes on their creations… In addition to their very own gift, each child also received a yummy bag of Christmas cookies. TILL NEXT YEAR… If you missed out on Santa’s visit, fret not. The dear old fellow promised to pop in to the Club same time, next year. So you know what to do, boys and girls – be nice!

r a e Y s i w n e n N e y T p f p o a H Now the Christmas holidays are behind us, it’s time to hit the courts and burn some calories. Here’s wishing you a happy, healthy and tennis-filled 2019.
LOOKING BACK WITH PRIDE We had a busy end to the year of 2018, playing the Ladies’ and Men’s Doubles Swiss Club Championship and also a Charity Mixed Doubles Championship. In the Swiss Club Doubles Championship, more than 60 players participated in the two categories of Ladies’ Doubles and Men’s Doubles. It was great to see so many Members joining us on courts and making these events a success. Thank you all for your support. We played a lot of great matches. It was particularly interesting and very entertaining to see some of the young guns participating and trying to take down the more experienced players. We also had new Members join us – it was great to see new faces on the courts.
FIRST EVER CHARITY EVENT For the first time in Club history, we organised a private charity event in association with the Mixed Doubles Championship. I’m thrilled to share that it went even better than we had hoped for. In total, we raised and collected $1,700 to support a Child’s Dream Foundation project called Jan MK DPP Werner Family Project. This project addresses Dropout Prevention Programme in Cambodia and is supported by Gudrun and Chris Werner. If you want more information or would like to make a donation, please contact us and we will connect you with Gudrun. DATES TO REMEMBER Junior Group Programme resumes Monday 7 January 2019 1st Junior Tournament of 2019 Friday 25 January, from 5pm Saturday 26 January, from 2pm Sunday 27 January (if required) NOTE: Please register online via the link in the Swiss Club e-newsletter. Please make sure your child is fully available on these dates and times before registration.

Being Ready, Even When You’re Not Timothy Felix, Director of Active Fitness, shares a personal story that drives home one of the many obvious and not-so-obvious benefits of keeping fit. “I was invited for a surprise event one evening. All I was told was to come in comfortable outdoor attire. The invite was very generic invite, with no real purpose stated. Upon reaching the venue I realised that I had been invited to join in an obstacle course challenge. While it was meant to be fun, the competitive athlete inside of me could not help but take it with a degree of seriousness. “I was entirely untrained for this. I had not done any obstacle course challenges in years and, to make matters worse, I had a very late night the night before.
“It then dawned on me that the years I had spent training in the gym had been beneficial in ways I’d have never imagined. Furthermore, I’d spent most of this year teaching indoor cycling classes, which had formed the majority of my exercise routine. “There are many times when clients ask me – what am I exercising for? Well, here’s one of the many reasons. When you are unprepared, you are already ready! :)”
INTERESTED IN EXERCISING REGULARLY?
“Nevertheless I ran through it and, while I could feel the impact of the lack of sleep slowing me down, my legs and arms seemed to have a brain of their own and carried me through the finish line, leaving the other participants behind.

An Evening with
David May The Swiss Club is proud to host an exclusive charity event featuring Guest Speaker Manchester United footballer and Champions League winner David May at Arbenz on Sunday 13 January 2019.
GREAT FOOD WITH A FOOTBALL GREAT FOR A GREAT CAUSE The evening includes a buffet meal, free-flow beer and wine and a Q&A session with David during which guests can ply him with questions about his glorious football career. It will culminate in a charity auction to raise funds for the British Football Academy’s official charity, The Island Foundation. Join us for an evening to remember – or kick yourself later!
ABOUT THE ISLAND FOUNDATION The Island Foundation is an International Charitable Organisation, registered in Singapore. It runs an education programme in collaboration with local people in the coastal communities of the Riau Archipelago in Indonesia. The Foundation’s aim is to create lasting change by educating the next generation to become resilient, resourceful problem-solvers, equipped with skills for better prospects in life. Its activities include teacher training, running learning centres, developing a bilingual curriculum and organising community activities. As a result, young students develop through creativity and innovation, critical thinking, language, confidence and engagement. It is hoped that these skills will open up new opportunities for them and their communities. To find out more, visit www.theislandfoundation.com

NEWS FROM THE
Radio24
Visits the Swiss School in Singapore When Swiss radio station Radio24 came to Singapore in September, our school was honoured to be included in the station’s morning show ‘Ufsteller’. The programme aimed to bring our Asian metropolis closer to listeners in Switzerland. FROM SINGAPORE TO SWITZERLAND ACROSS THE AIRWAVES On 26 September 2018, teacher Ms Karin Muntwyler and students Megan Schueffel and Louis Boenders went on air ‘live’ with reporters Nina Roost and Dominik Widmer. During the broadcast, they were asked about their lives here in the Lion City, the difference between living in the two countries, and what they miss the most about home. To everyone’s surprise, it was Ms Muntwyler who was the most homesick of the three interviewees. Louis, who is already in his fourth year here in Singapore, is already a ‘veteran’ expat and said he has adapted easily. HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE At the end of the interview, Megan and Louis had the chance to try their hands and voices at being radio presenters. Louis reported about the weather in Zurich while Megan informed listeners about the traffic conditions. Radio24 is from Zurich and has a listenership of about 330,000. It is the oldest private radio station in Switzerland.

Hello, Haags! New Members since March 2018, Michael and Yana Haag and their three children are true citizens of the world. Dad is Swiss, Mum is Russian, and the family have resided in Singapore since 2015. A LITTLE BACKGROUND Michael, aged 40, is Swiss and works as the HR Director, APAC for Lonza, a Swiss pharmaceutical custom manufacturer. Yana, aged 37, is Russian. A teacher by training, she works for the Russian oil and gas company Gazprom. Their three gorgeous children Leon, Nikita and Madeleine, aged eight, seven and four respectively, were all born in Switzerland and attend the Swiss School in Singapore. Michael voiced the sentiments of the whole family in singing the praises of Singapore. “Singapore is unique in its diversity and peaceful cohabitation of cultures, its safety and convenience, its feng shui beauty as a city in a garden, and the ease with which it constantly changes and innovates,” said Michael. Though they admittedly live the good life, the family likes to keep things simple. While they sometimes eat at swanky restaurants on Dempsey Hill, they’re just as happy chowing down with the locals at their local hawker centre at Empress Market. LOVING CLUB LIFE Speaking of dining, the restaurant facilities at the Swiss Club are one of the many things that Yana and Michael appreciate about the Club. They are in fact already regulars at Arbenz. Michael claims its Veal Zurich is better than the one in Zurich!
“
We keep bringing our companies here for after-work events or team dinners. There hasn’t been a guest who wasn’t impressed with the Club’s location and size, the range of facilities and the quality of the restaurants. What a place!
wasn’t impressed with the Club’s location and size, the range of facilities and the quality of the restaurants. What a place!” shared Michael. A FEW OF THEIR FAVOURITE THINGS When we asked Michael to sum up what the family enjoy most about the Club, he volunteered this long and generous list.
Arbenz aside, the family frequent the Club’s sporting facilities, including the gym. Michael and Yana have also been making full use of the Club for their respective companies’ corporate events.
“One feels extremely welcome here – the staff aren’t just friendly but genuinely warm and helpful. If an evening at the Arbenz promises to be busy, Yusri will text us if we are coming so we get a table even if we haven’t booked one… When Leon is waiting for his football practice after school, they will always look out for him and offer him something tasty... Carsten leads by example and is extremely engaged and personable. There is simply no place like it.”

S T A F F E R
Christine Chun, the Club’s Event Coordinator, is a 24-year-old Malaysian and a graduate of Berjaya University in Kuala Lumpur. She joined the Swiss Club in September 2017. THE LEARNING NEVER ENDS Christine generously credits her immediate boss, Aaron Lim, for teaching her not only about events but also about F&B Operations. She also closely observes her colleagues and how they interact with Members from different industries and nationalities, taking mental notes and consciously honing her own communication skills. Besides the opportunity to learn from veterans, Christine greatly appreciates the natural setting of the Swiss Club, which reminds her of parts of Malaysia. “I think I have the best office in the world,” said Christine. She also values the positive feedback from Members after an event has gone well. “It’s very satisfying and motivating,” she said.
As one of four siblings, Christine naturally has a soft spot for kids. To date, she has greatly enjoyed organising kids’ activities such as Easter egg painting, veggie stamping, Mother’s Day card making and cookie baking. CAFÉ CULTURE AND HOME COOKING Christine shares an apartment with her boyfriend and flatmates in the Orchard area. In her spare time, she likes to chill at cafes and visit her family in Malaysia. Though she loves the western menu items at the Swiss Club, her mum’s beloved yong tau foo and yam cake beckon constantly with the unmistakable taste of home. Christine has this message for Members. “Please consider holding your events at the Swiss Club. We’ll provide a great venue, great service and great food!”

Predicti ns
Commencing on 5 February 2019, the Year of the Earth Pig is the final chapter in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. May you hog out on happiness, sniff out the truffles of prosperity, feast on good fortune and enjoy splendid health.
PIGS
Born in 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019 Generally, sharing your sign with the year is, well, not a great sign. However, prudent pigs who tread carefully through the muck rather than wallow in misery will keep their snouts clean. Do not hastily expand your business. Focus on friends, lavish attention on your lover and look after your health. Porkers may prosper yet.
31
RATS Born in 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008 Your people skills are peaking, so get out of your rat-hole and network, network, network. Career luck is favourable, but embrace only positions that challenge you or your sharp mind will be dulled. Manage money shrewdly and look after your health.
COWS
TIGERS
Born in 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009
Born in 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010 Lay low and resist the urge to pounce on every opportunity that presents itself. While friendships flourish, true romance may elude you. But fret not, pussycat – your time will come.
Career, wealth and love are looking moo-vellous. Choose contentment over conflict and avoid locking horns with foes. Stay humble when successful and be discreet when profits pile up. Then you will surely graze on good fortune.
RABBITS Born in 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 Relationships are warm and fuzzy. Career luck is steady but not spectacular. Consider job offers that involve relocation, but do not jump too fast too soon. Take it easy and you won’t find a hare out of place.
HORSES Born in 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014
DRAGONS Born in 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 Career luck is soaring, but don’t get carried away on a wing and a dazzling job offer too soon. Strive for balance, and remember to socialise for fun not just for gain. Search for clarity and exercise caution. Breathe – fresh air not fire.
SHEEP
Relationships, romance and career are all galloping ahead this year. Leadership and friendship can co-exist in the same social stable. Work hard, harness your ego and you can ride the crest of a wave of good fortune.
Born in 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015 Wealth and career opportunities abound. Relationships will flourish but maintain humility and generosity of spirit to avoid the jealousy of others. Build wealth but do not be too greedy or the golden fleece of good luck will be shorn.
CHICKENS Born in 1933, 1945, 1957, 969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017 Keep your wits about you, chickens, or you’ll be cooked. He who hesitates is lost, so stay alert and act swiftly and prudently to avoid money losses. Pay attention to your health and do not stay cooped up indoors. Seek the sunshine.
MONKEYS
SNAKES
DOGS
Born in 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016
Born in 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013
Born in 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018
Wealth and career luck are not swinging your way. Invest in your relationships and pay attention to your monkey mister or missus. Look after your health and avoid unnecessary chatter to steer clear of mishaps.
Money luck is so-so. Career luck is good, but lay low and stick to what you know rather than bite at new opportunities. Work hard at your romantic and platonic relationships or risk being shed like so much dead skin. Take care of your health.
Career luck is wagging its tail, but don’t go panting after every bone waved under your nose. Better to sit and be selective. Wealth opportunities are unleashed. Grab them but hang on tight. Fight your instinctive laziness and get physical.
The above horoscopes are based on information extracted from online sources and should not be taken too seriously. We say – make your own luck in this Pig of a year.

It’s been a while since we celebrated Karl’s birthday at the Jungle Bar but I didn’t want to miss giving you some short feedback. First of all, the party was great. Thank you for arranging the use of the sports hall facility for the soccer game. Your staff Zaki and Su did a great job. I have to highlight Zaki’s support through the whole event. He did an excellent job. Even though the kids were running late, he managed to get the food out on time and kept everybody happy. And even when the parents arrived for pickup, he managed to get them their drinks in minutes. Thank you for letting him work at that event. I would like to recommend him for ‘Employee of the Month’! Thank you, kind regards and see you soon at the Club, Dagmar Henn
