Meet a Staffer: Meet Jasmine, An All-round Good Sport

A Note from the Editor Dear Members, Happy New Decade! I have been waiting to write that for, well, a decade. The year 2020 has a pleasing ring to it. The numbers conjure up balance, duality and perfect vision, which are all qualities the whole world needs now. And they are qualities that the Swiss Club embodies. As Members of the Swiss Club, you are dual citizens of your homeland and the little red dot. You are in the privileged position of being able to partake of all that is Singaporean, from hawker food to lion dances, and retreat to the comfort zone of your native culture as and when you wish. How lucky is that! Speaking of lucky, we were very lucky indeed to have been graced by a visit from ‘Santa’, ‘Mrs Claus’ and his ‘elves’ last December. A huge ‘thank you’ goes to the McGrath family for making it possible. Samuel and Annie and their three lovely daughters – Eliza, Nell and Beatrice, were absolute stars in their well-rehearsed roles. Mum Annie embodied the true spirit of Christmas when she said, “Together as a family, we wanted to share joy and happiness with everyone. When you bring kindness to others, it brings you joy and makes you want to do more.” Here’s wishing you an abundance of joy, good luck, prosperity and happiness in the Year of the Rat, and in the exciting decade ahead! Yours,

A Word from the

Committee

This is the time to thank you, Members, for your trust in the Committee and the Management of the Club. We value your support in these times of change, your patience and your ideas and contributions on how we can continue to work on improving our Club.

Dear Members As Christmas turns into a new year, it is a time to introspect and reflect, a time to celebrate with family and friends, and a time to get ready for 2020. First and foremost, the Committee wishes you, the Members, the best of health for 2020, lots of great opportunities in business and abundant joy in everything you do.

By mid-December, the Reception office was redesigned to host the full membership/reception team and the accounts office was redesigned to host the admin staff.

Thanks to your support, 2019 has been a remarkable year for the Club with regards to the positive changes that will give our Club a new look and improved infrastructure in the years to come.

This is the time to thank you, Members, for your trust in the Committee and the Management of the Club. We value your support in these times of change, your patience and your ideas and contributions on how we can continue to work on improving our Club.

The pool renovation was professionally completed and our new pool now shines like a jewel at the centre of our beautiful premises. Meanwhile, the Jungle Cove has been completed after the government inspections were conducted. Now that the main clubhouse has closed, the Pergola has shut down operations so that the renovation can start. On Friday 6 December, the ‘Bukit Kiosk’ at The Guesthouse opened while the alternative ‘Pergola’ at the Pavilion commenced serving an a la carte menu and the food stalls opened a few days later. It is great to see that our Members are anticipating all these changes and small ‘inconveniences’ with a positive attitude and excited anticipation.

6

These are just some of the improvements that have taken place at the end of the year. In 2020, the renovation of our beloved Club will be in full swing.

We will continue to listen to your input and subsequently adapt our offerings in F&B, Service, Sports and other activities in the new year, so that at the end of 2020 we can say – it was a year of massive change and a year of great improvements. Thank you!

A. Jacklowsky Adrian Jacklowsky Deputy President

A Message from the

General Manager

The year 2020 looks set to continue where we left off, with the Chinese New Year celebrations to usher in the Year of the Rat. Please do remember to join us for our customary lion dance on 2 February 2020.

Dear Members Welcome back from your winter holidays, which were no doubt filled with festive cheer. I hope that the Yuletide season provided you with plenty of opportunities to visit family and relatives. Time flies when you are having fun, and 2019 was no exception. In between partying at fun-filled events, from an Evening at the Races to our 20th Anniversary Oktoberfest, we still managed quite a number of firsts including our Oktoberfest community event, the retiling of our leisure pool, the reopening and renaming of The Jungle Cove, the launch of the Swiss Club’s very own Mobile App, a visit from Santa together with his elves, and our NYE Countdown Pool Party. The year 2020 looks set to continue where we left off, with the Chinese New Year celebrations to usher in the Year of the Rat. Please do remember to join us for our customary lion dance on 2 February 2020. A sincere ‘thank you’ to all Members who contributed to the ‘Ang Pow’ fund for all staff, which is truly appreciated.

8

In the coming months, the Club’s Masterplan will be rolled out, with more F&B offerings at our ‘new’ F&B outlets. Should you have any specific cravings or requests, do speak to our F&B team. I am sure that our chefs would be happy to satisfy your palate. Thank you to all Members for your valuable support and understanding with regard to any inconveniences caused during our renovations. Wishing you good health, abundant wealth, many more occasions to create wonderful memories, and a fantastic start to 2020!

Perrin Réserve Côtes du Rhône Red 2017

$65 per bottle $14 per 150ml glass

$65 per bottle $14 per 150ml glass

This extremely rare wine comes from a 2.5 acre vineyard located within the ‘clos’ around the historical pope’s palace. It has a nice nose with notes of white flesh fruit and citrus fruit. The palate is tense, iodized, with aromas of apricot and a delicately buttered elegant finish.

‘Côtes du Rhône par Excellence’, this is a great everyday wine. Its nose offers a beautiful aromatic complexity, marked by Grenache and a hint of blackcurrant brought by the ripe Syrah. On the palate, it shows complexity with tannins still present, but with finesse and elegance, and a beautiful freshness.

Brilliant pale pink. Expressive, intensely fruity, crisp nose. The palate is both floral and fruity, fresh and thirst-quenching with a long, intense aftertaste. A deliciously drinkable wine served well-chilled on a glorious summer’s day.

An intense ruby red colour with violet. A pleasant fruity bouquet with notes of cherry, blackberry and ripe plum. Balanced and well structured on the palate.

Fun and Games andNames!

On Sunday 24 November 2019, the Swiss Club hosted a fun-filled pool party for around 150 Members and their guests. The winning entry in the contest for the renaming of the former Jungle Bar was also announced‌ In the interests of building suspense, read on to find out the new name.

14

FOUR HOURS OF FUN The party kicked off with a splash at 11am and wrapped at 3pm. A healthy turnout of around 150 Members and guests set up ‘camp’ around the pool. The energy was fantastic. SNAPSHOT OF A FAMILY CLUB Anyone there on the day would know what we mean when we say that it’s events like these that affirm our reputation as a ‘family club’. Despite the evergreen appeal of the bouncy castle (our very own Swiss Cub-branded asset), the bouncy slide and floating obstacle course inside the pool were the main attractions. At one time, there were at least 20 kids and parents tackling the obstacle course together! (Now, isn’t that a great metaphor for life?) A lively emcee cum deejay kept the atmosphere electric and the music pumping, and two lifeguards were on duty to ensure the safety of all present. Our sporting Swiss Club management and staff wore their iconic red T-shirts, with capes attached to their backs. (Yes, you are all ‘angels’.) The rain almost held off till the very end. When a light sprinkling ‘blessed’ us, it failed to dampen the spirits of those in attendance.

15

A GAME CROWD The crowd were a sporting bunch, and enthusiastically joined in the well-organised activities by the Pavilion, which included the ever-popular foosball and ring toss (closely related to quoits). In addition, our General Manager Aaron challenged the ‘pool sharks’ to a game of 8-ball for a free beer between 1pm and 3pm. A booth set up by our guest vendor OCRA Nation attracted steady interest throughout the event. Snorkelling and scuba diving courses for younger and older kids, along with trial courses, were offered at very attractive prices. FOOD, FOOD AND MORE FOOD No Swiss Club event would be complete without delicious food and ice-cold drinks. Our wonderful culinary team rolled out a barbecue-themed menu that included the epic ‘Jungle Beef Burgers’, hot dogs, grilled cervelat (pork sausages) with homemade schlangenbrot (which loosely translates as campfire bread cooked on a stick). The kids tucked in to free popcorn and candy floss, and a very respectable drinks menu kept everyone hydrated with a good mix of alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments.

16

E V E N T S

AND THE WINNER IS… The new name for the area formerly known as Jungle Bar was announced… (cue drum roll). The name is – Jungle Cove! Congratulations to our longtime and highly esteemed Member Mr Heinz Iten, who submitted the winning entry and won $300 worth of F&B credits. In addition, the winner of the lucky draw into which all entrants’ names were placed was Mrs Aksel Kitowski who won $100 worth of F&B credits. Thank you to everyone who got in the swim of things and made our most recent pool party another resounding success. See you all at the next one!

The Day that

Santa

Came to Visit

On Saturday 7 December, Santa Claus paid the Swiss Club a visit. Following meticulous planning, the jolly old man in red arrived on time with a band of very helpful and adorable elves. WE MADE A DAY OF IT Before Santa’s arrival, the crowd of 50 or so adults and children gathered in the Pavilion and tucked in to a slap-up lunch buffet from 1pm to 5pm. The sumptuous menu featured festive honey-baked ham with apple sauce along with delicacies such as soy ginger-glazed salmon with pomegranate and toasted almonds, and smoked mackerel and gravlax with honey mustard. There were plenty of kid-friendly dishes, too, including old favourites like meatballs, penne with tomato sauce, cocktail sausages and potato wedges. The dessert table groaned with a sweet spread of Christmas cookies, yuzu jasmine teacake, Yule logs in traditional chocolate and tropical coconut flavours, and of course apple strudel. BUILDING ANTICIPATION – AND GINGERBREAD HOUSES! As the anticipation built, the kids and parents were kept busy with a fun gingerbread house-making workshop at 2pm. Going by the spectacular results, there are a good few future engineers, artists and perhaps pastry chefs among our junior Members. What amazing constructions! The hands-on activity was a great way for little ones to spend some quality time with mums and dads. William spoke for many of the kids when he said, “I really enjoyed making the gingerbread house with Mummy!”

18

A Sampler of Santa’s Banter “Dear Paloma, you were a very good girl this year, and are always trying to improve yourself. Happy to hear that you are trying different foods now, even veggies. But please do not fight with your sister!” “Sweet Penelope, you are a loving and beautiful girl, and an excellent student. I heard you did really really well at school. However, do be more careful as you had a number of accidents this year, and please do not fight with your sister!” “Well done, Elli. I heard that you are a very good student and you are learning Mandarin. You enjoy your trampoline classes, and love singing and dancing… Now, can you say something in Mandarin for me?” “Well, Malte, I know you were curious about the new world here in Singapore, but understandably you miss your village in Switzerland, the snow and the food. But on the bright side, you had a great start at the Swiss School.” “Hello Max, I hear you are really good at swimming and playing tennis. In fact, you won four medals at a swimming competition just two weeks ago. Well done.” “Wow Zoe, you are such a happy and active girl! I hear you love learning swimming and are really nice to your friends at school. Please be nice to your brother, too!” “Marcus my man, I heard you’ve been a very good boy and would like a Lego set for Christmas… I think that can be arranged!” … AND HERE COMES SANTA! Mr Claus was received by a welcome committee of awestruck children. A total of 13 children were privileged to a brief one-on-one audience with Santa, who seemed to know every little detail of their conduct in the year past. Though he must have had his ‘Naughty’ and ‘Nice’ lists up his sleeve, we never caught a glimpse of them. What a memory this spritely old man has! Amazingly, every child made it to the ‘Nice’ list and received a beautifully wrapped present from Santa, ably assisted by his handy elves. Based on the expressions of delight on the faces of those kids who couldn’t wait till Christmas to unwrap their gifts, everyone’s wishes came true.

“Benjamin my boy, you’ve been very good this year. You always listen to Mummy, Daddy, Tita and your teachers. You’re good at sharing and swimming and you love your dog Islay. So, you would like a yellow car and an airplane ticket to see Granny and Babba!” “Well, well, well, William, you have had a very good year! You have made many transitions including moving house and starting a new school, which you love. You have also started football at the Swiss Club. I see that you’re wishing for a special camera!” “Hello, little Leanora. You are such a happy, smiley girl! You love playing with dolls and you like pretty dresses and jewellery. I see that you are wishing for lots of sparkly, fun things!” “Pleased to meet you, Leo. I hear that you are kindhearted and very popular, funny and always up for excitement. You are a hardworking student, and very good at sports.” “Good job, Scarlett. I heard that you have been a very good girl this year. But you must eat your food and not play with your phone so much. Please eat more and drink more plain water!” “Nice one, Juliette. You have been a very good girl this year and have progressed a lot in school. Your German and English are remarkable, and you are trying hard at swimming… Next year, please continue to add new foods to your diet!”

SECOND TIME IS JUST AS SPECIAL For 11-year-old Elli Herrdum, though it was her second time to meet Santa at the Swiss Club it was no less magical than the first. “I was meeting Santa for the second time and it was brilliant. Even for an 11-year-old like myself, it was an experience!” she shared.

“ 20

Likewise, Max Brinkkman was another second-timer. “It was great! This is my second time meeting Santa, and it’s a date again next year!” he said. And Juliette Joslin echoed their sentiments. “It was really cool meeting Santa for the second time. Everyone ended up on the Good List!”

I was meeting Santa for the second time and it was brilliant. Even for an 11-year-old like myself, it was an experience! Elli Herrdum

A PARTING MESSAGE FROM SANTA On behalf of her co-workers, one pretty little elf shared, “We all worked till the middle of the night, preparing the presents.” But clearly the hard work paid off in smiles from the delighted recipients. Another elf added, “It’s so much fun, helping Santa give out the presents!” After commenting on the heat in Singapore, which was understandably quite a shock after the icy temperatures of the North Pole, Santa bid his farewell. “We’ll see you all again next year. Meanwhile, be kind to one another and eat your veggies!” said Santa.

It’s so much fun, helping Santa give out the presents! Santa’s Little Elf

New Year, New Opportunities to Play! On behalf of the tennis coaches of 40XV, here’s wishing you a happy, healthy, prosperous and tennis-filled new year. The time to hit the courts and burn some calories is – right now!

A BUSY YEAR-END We had a busy end to 2019, which saw the Ladies’ and Men’s Doubles Swiss Club Championship and also the second edition of the Charity Mixed Doubles Championship. A new record was set in terms of participation, with 44 players joining the Ladies’ and Men’s Doubles and 32 players in the Charity Mixed. Many thanks to all involved for making both events so successful. We enjoyed many great matches. It was especially entertaining to see some of the young guns participating and trying (sometimes successfully) to take down the more experienced players. The level of play was very high.

The women’s final was definitely the most epic match of the tournament. Congratulations to all winners and runners-up, and to all who took part. You are all winners in our eyes!

We salute the winning duo, Nathalie de Panafieu and Javier Acosta; the runners-up, Roberta Pollina and Harry Boot; and all players who participated in this very meaningful tournament.

GREAT TENNIS, GREAT CAUSE The second edition of the Charity Mixed Doubles Championship raised $1,800 to support a Child’s Dream foundation project called Jan MK DPP Werner Family Project – a wonderful Dropout Prevention Programme in Cambodia that is supported by Gudrun and Chris Werner. If you would like more information or wish to make a donation, please contact us and we will put you in touch with Gudrun.

WELCOME THE NEW, WELCOME BACK THE OLD On Friday 17 January we are holding an Apero Welcome Back Social from 7pm to 9pm or later. You’ll be randomly paired by your coach, and ‘hydrated’ with beer and wine. A fee of just $15 includes a glass of wine. Don’t be late or your glass of wine becomes mine! It’s a great way to start the year and play some fun tennis. Please register online through the Swiss Club e-newsletter.

The Racket Committee Wants You! The Swiss Club’s Racket Committee is seeking volunteers who are keen to participate in the racket life of the club. The Racket Committee’s remit is to be a consultation body liaising between Members and the main Swiss Club Committee. It typically meets once every two or three months, and covers matters such as junior tennis, tournaments and competitions, court maintenance and etiquette, and padel. We are seeking up to three new Members.

INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING AS A MEMBER OF THE RACKET COMMITTEE? Please contact Thierry de Panafieu at: T: 9108 9170 E: tdepanafieu@gmail.com

A Great Coach and a True Friend by Nathalie de Panafieu

My family and I will leave Singapore in a few days now and one person I’m really going to miss is Pierre. MANAGER OF MANY MUMS (AND THEIR KIDS) Pierre has to manage tiger mums, busy mums, sensitive mums, working mums, demanding mums (don’t ask me in which category He is not only an excellent coach, giving the I should be ... ) and kids with their right advice to the right person at the right moment, but also an extremely professional, own strong character (good or bad… don’t ask me in which category my hard-working and fair person. sons should be…). He is not only a fantastic tennis player, but We really love Pierre, his way to talk also an amazing educator and psychologist without deference, his positive attitude, his with kids (and adults!). ability to organize both people and events. He is always in a good mood, smiling I have never seen him angry or tired, and joking. In addition to this, he has a complaining or criticising. He is always wonderful wife and one of the cutest boys consistently doing his best to meet I have ever seen – Pete. Members’ high expectations and requests. FANTASTIC PLAYER, AMAZING EDUCATOR I’ve known Pierre for many years now. He is the tennis coach of our sons and I also had great lessons with him.

THANK YOU Many thanks, Pierre, for having been such a great tennis coach for all of us. Thank you for your kindness and professionalism. I’m happy to say that you are now much more than a coach, you are a true friend.

Creating the Right Mindset

to Train Successfully Training to achieve your fitness goals can be challenging, and finding the time to constantly train and successfully hit your goals is by no means easy. Having the right mindset will help you overcome the multiple challenges you will face on the way to achieving your final fitness goals.

FEELING SUCCESSFUL Key to achieving your fitness goals is a successful mindset – the determination to push beyond achieving your small goals and keeping your eye on the destination you want to reach. Every one of us has a different ‘ideal physique’ and a different set of physical fitness goals. And to get to that place you’re aiming for takes time. Even if you closely measure your progress, you will still hit what seems to be a plateau – where the changes or improvements you have made seem to reach a standstill. Most likely they’re still occurring, just not at the same rate at which they were previously. This is one of those moments where having the right mindset is key to achieving the goal you’d like to reach.

HAVING CONFIDENCE Be confident in your abilities. Training successfully also means working your body at a level where it is challenged. I’m often surprised by people’s confidence levels in the gym. Many people who have a coach are highly confident in their workplace. There seems to be some disconnect between their confidence levels outside of the gym and inside of it. Why this matters? Well, when you’re doing various lifts or explosive movements, confidence makes the difference between executing it correctly or not. Your self-belief also largely determines how hard you’re willing to push yourself and how much you think you are able to.

While I understand where a lack of confidence can stem from, it is important to remember that the mindset you adopt will determine the success that you will be able to achieve in your training goals. SEEKING HELP As with being able to achieve any goal in life, you have to be consistent and confident. If you feel like you’re not going anywhere with your goal, seek help from a professional who can help you tweak your programme and your mindset to help you achieve your goals. Good luck getting there in 2020!

A Swiss-Singaporean Collaboration in the Arts:

Tomorrow Is An Island, as inland, a sinland

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION Opening: Ongoing dates: Opening hours: Venue: Admission: RSVP:

Thursday 16 January 2020, 6.30pm (Opening) 17 January to 28 March 2020 (Exhibition) Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm; Saturday, 12pm to 5pm Closed on Sundays and Public Holidays NTU ADM Gallery Free For the opening event, please e-mail singapore.culture@eda.admin.ch

Visit an amazing Swiss-Singaporean exhibition co-curated by Monica Ursina Jäger and Jason Wee at the NTU ADM Gallery. Supported by the Embassy of Switzerland, it is open to visitors from 17 January to 28 March 2020. AN ARTIST-LED AND CO-CURATED PROJECT How can the disruption of nature/culture binaries foster more-than-human entanglements? What kind of futures can we imagine in light of precarious migrations, securitised fears and asphyxiated commons? What cultures of care could be freshly fermented amidst racialised divisions? ‘Tomorrow Is An Island, as inland, a sinland’ is an artist-led project, co-curated by Swiss artist Monica Ursina Jäger and Singaporean artist Jason Wee. The title of the exhibition deploys a sequence of anagrams that rescrambles with each new phrase, suggesting that the next moments retain recognisable components of the present, but to disruptive effects. Organised by the Architecture, Design and Media (ADM) Gallery at Nanyang Technological University, it brings together four artists and two writers from Singapore and Switzerland to rethink ideas of systemic change, counter-map traditional ideas of boundaries and envision new forms of assemblage. In addition to artwork from the co-curators Monica Ursina Jäger and Jason Wee, the exhibition features work by artists Nicole Bachmann (CH) and Weixin Quek Chong (SG), and writers Damian Christinger (CH) and Marcus Yee (SG). Visitors can admire and experience a range of visual arts, such as text-based work, a 3-channel video installation

and performance art, including a performance on the opening night that emphasises inter-body relationships. ABOUT SWISS ARTIST MONICA URSINA JÄGER Monica Ursina Jäger is a Swiss artist living in Zurich. Working with drawing, sculpture and installation, her practice unfolds through a multidisciplinary reflection on concepts of space, landscape, and architecture that investigate the relationship between the natural and the constructed environment. Her work is generously supported by Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Funds. In 2018, she spent three months in Singapore as an artist-in-residence at the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA). The exhibition will show her ambitious artwork resulting from her research stay in Singapore – a three-channel video titled ‘Forest Tales and Emerald Fictions 2019’. OPENING EVENT SUPPORTED BY THE EMBASSY OF SWITZERLAND The Embassy of Switzerland is honoured to support this wonderful Swiss-Singapore collaboration. Guest-of-Honour Ambassador Fabrice Filliez will open the exhibition on Thursday 16 January, starting at 6.30 pm at the NTU ADM Gallery. The embassy warmly invites and encourages all arts lovers to visit the exhibition.

A Great Day Out

NEWS FROM THE

with Our Buddies

at Admiralty Park As part of our age-mixed learning concept, our Primary teachers organised an outing for the students of the P1/2 classes, together with P4/5C and P5/6A, to the famed Admiralty Park.

BONDING BETWEEN OLDER AND YOUNGER After students were split into small groups, each led by a P6 student ‘buddy’, they eagerly embarked on a treasure hunt around the foot trail to complete a worksheet. Everybody completed the challenge successfully despite the sweltering heat. Then it was time to explore the playgrounds and countless slides! The older students helped the younger ones, while some preferred to engage in a game of badminton or frisbee.

Article and photos courtesy of Charlene Chen

AFTER PLAY, PRIZES After a quick lunch, prizes were presented to the top three groups who completed the worksheet in the fastest time. Congratulations to the winning teams, and a pat on the back to everyone who joined in. It was definitely a fun excursion that not only helped bond the older and younger children, but also encouraged mingling between German and French streams. We look forward to more fun-filled outings together in the future!

Meet Jasmine,

An All-round Good Sport Get to know Jasmine, the Swiss Club’s Sports & Recreation Executive. SPORTS, SPORTS, SPORTS A petite and pretty 29-year-old Singaporean, Jasmine plays basketball, loves watching football, and fills her working hours with organising sporting activities for Members. In her role, she liaises with vendors on new sports programmes, manages the bookings of the various sports facilities, and communicates with Members from the respective sports committees to obtain feedback and identify room for improvement. MAKING MEMORIES AND MAKING FRIENDS In the year that Jasmine has worked at the Club, she has grown very fond of her colleagues. “Be it the management or

service staff, everyone has always been very helpful and approachable,” she said. A highlight of the year for Jasmine was the Oktoberfest. “Getting to see so many guests and members getting together, drinking and singing their hearts out was quite amazing!” she recalled. MOVIES, MUSIC AND MAN U In her spare time, Jasmine enjoys listening to music, watching movies and catching Netflix series. She is also a hardcore fan of Manchester United and willingly sacrifices sleep to watch their games. At work, Jasmine enjoys the Club’s gourmet burger, beef kuay teow, garlic

and cheese naan, and popcorn chicken. Looking at her trim figure, we can only deduce that she burns off a lot of calories playing basketball! A MESSAGE FOR MEMBERS – PLAY ON! Jasmine wanted to assure Members that sporting activities will continue during the ongoing renovations. “Sports lessons, sports camps, programmes and tournaments for Members are still going on, no matter what. Let’s continue to have lots of fun in fitness in the year 2020!” said Jasmine. You heard the lady – let’s get fit and and have fun in the new year. Thanks, Jasmine, for the friendly chat.

THE BACK STORY

Our Guesthouse Reception staff came to the aid of a guest whose daughter had lost her glasses in Singapore. That day, she had been travelling by taxi but did not collect her receipts. Our staff called the taxi hotline and checked with Lost and Found to see if any items similar to her description had been handed in. After two days, the taxi company called back with the good news that the item had been found. We salute our Singapore Taxi Drivers!

Smiling and Supportive Staff Our Biggest Asset (Excerpt from a feedback form) Your biggest assets are your team-always smiling and friendly, giving great support to guests and Members. Uwe Oemmelen
