A Note from the Editor Dear Members, I hope you had a joyous Christmas with your loved ones, here or at ‘home’, wherever that may be. For those very well-behaved children who caught Santa on his annual stopover at the Swiss Club, congratulations on being more nice than naughty. Every little one received a gift. The parents and adults were also gifted with a full programme of very polished performances, including several songs and even a karate demonstration. What a wonderful time we had! A new year is always a good time for a new start. No doubt many Members will have made new year’s resolutions pertaining to fitness. The good news is, there are now many more ways to go ‘from flab to fab’ at the Swiss Club. Fancy a session of Floatfit Yoga? Are you brave enough for a Bungee Workout class? Read all about these and other novel new sports and recreational activities in our new section, ‘Spo(r)t On’ on Page 16. Speaking of new starts, we hope you like the new look RELAX! In closing, on behalf of the Editorial I wish you a Happy and Prosperous Lunar New Year. May the Year of the Dog unleash your wildest dreams and fulfill your grandest plans. Warmest regards,

A Word from the
Committee
“
A lot has happened since our previous December ‘Word from the Committee’ by our past Club Secretary, Patrick Regamey, and quite a few things are being planned.
Dear Members and Friends of the Swiss Club, As 2017 is now ‘history’, it’s time to review the year in order to identify things that have gone well and why, so that we can extend them into 2018 and beyond. In addition, we should pinpoint specific areas where we can improve. A lot has happened since our last ‘Word from the Committee’ by our past Club Secretary, Patrick Regamey, and quite a few things are being planned. Here’s a summary of recent events, new developments and planned activities. The Swiss Club Oktoberfest 2017 was held and clocked up record numbers in terms of people, fun and the bottom line, without any major issues. Give the Management and Staff of the Club a round of applause! The AGM was held and a new Committee of 11 members was elected. The previous Committee has been almost fully replaced, with three members staying on and eight new members, including our new President Rolf Gerber and, for the first time, four ladies and five non-Swiss members. We welcome an almost completely new Swiss Club Committee. Several infrastructure improvements have been started or already concluded. These include the Sports Field resurfacing, some repairs to defects in The Guesthouse and Pergola bathrooms, and of course the new playgrounds. Concurrently, the Committee is working on more major renovations – more on that below. One Membership – Three Clubs is the result of a quest to add value to our Membership. It reflects our recently inked agreement with the renowned Singapore Cricket Club, which has already seen Members from both sides making use of the complementary strengths of the two Clubs. In addition, we are delighted to confirm reciprocal privileges with yet another prestigious Club, namely One°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, which enables Members of both Clubs to patronise the various food and beverage outlets and accommodation offerings of each other’s Clubs. All for our Members!
Vienna Boys Choir will soon be visiting Singapore, with the Swiss Club as its Official Club. Members are entitled to enjoy 15% off ticket prices for both concerts and workshops on 11, 12, 13 and 15 January. A friendly football match will be hosted at the Swiss Club on 14 January. More details on the Vienna Boys Choir can be found on our website, in our newsletters and at the Club. Strategy Day will be held in January. Speaking of room for improvement, you will soon see further upgrading and maintenance of existing facilities plus improvements in our service deliveries. These matters are of great importance to the Committee as well as the Management of the Club. We thank you, our Members, for the many excellent comments received through the online Masterplan Pulse Survey. On the day that has been set aside for strategy and brainstorming, we will study Members’ feedback and our external consultant’s reports, and other topics will be identified, analysed, prioritised and incorporated in projects related to the upgrading of the Pergola and various other areas of the Club. You will be kept updated on all the major planned activities and where they fit in the Masterplan. The annual Ang Pow collection has taken place, and I would like to extend a big ‘thank you’ to all those Members who generously contributed. It is a great opportunity to show our gratitude to our Club employees for the service rendered throughout the past year. At this point, on behalf of the Committee, I wish everybody a fantastic 2018, full of health in every respect. And to all our Asian Members, here’s wishing you a prosperous Year of the Dog. Do join us for the festive and exciting Lion Dance on 25 February. Kindly refer to Page 11 for details of the event.

A Message from the
General Manager
Dear Members,
“
As always, we look forward to welcoming you to the Club and providing you with a wonderful experience.
Hope the Christmas season provided plenty of opportunities to visit the family and spend time with relatives and friends. Yuletide is a very special time of year with all the jolly sharing and giving. Again we celebrated our Christmas tree lighting with plenty of fun for the kids. Snow and smoke created a true Christmas wonderland, while mulled wine and cookies got everyone in the mood. The countdown from 10 was supported by the many kids present, and thereafter the festive lights were turned on. Tunes of the season were provided by the talented duo Genevieve and Evan, while Club President Rolf Gerber wished kids and adults alike a truly blessed Christmas and safe journeys for all those travelling. Thank you to those Members who supported the event. We aim to make this an annual Swiss Club tradition and hope to see many more families participate in the coming years. With the ringing in of 2018 and resolutions fresh in our minds, what can you expect in the coming year? And how can the Club keep abreast or, better still, stay on top of the challenges ahead? As mentioned in Adrian Jacklowsky’s message, upkeep, strategy and change are constants as our lives, and the Club, evolve. Trends and predictions are not always easy to pinpoint, yet we are seeing an increasing desire for healthy lifestyles, be it through food or fitness, as well as leisure, teen activities and, not least of all, technology, in broadcasting information to our Members and assisting our employees in their jobs. In the coming months, you will encounter many new activities related to health and fitness. Come join us and give
us feedback. In anticipation of the second playground (thank you, kids, for helping open the first one) and the sports field being completed towards the end of January (subject to weather), we hope such enhancements will provide opportunities for more play and fun for the entire family. Additionally, you will soon be greeted by members of staff at the Pergola holding tablets, so orders can be made tableside and sent straight to the kitchen for preparation. On that note, Chef Adrian and his team have also promised healthier food choices and cooking styles, without depriving the diner of his rustic favourites. January and February are packed with activities – movie nights are back with a kick with a screening of ‘Kungfu Panda’, the ever popular ‘Valentine’s by the pool’ is on again, wine and sake appreciation events are scheduled, and not forgetting the annual upcoming spectacle of the auspicious Lion Dance to usher in the Chinese New Year. As always, we look forward to welcoming you to the Club and providing you with a wonderful experience. Do help us to help you by changing your car decal to 2018 for easy identification, returning used towels to our towel machine (or be charged $15 per towel), and lastly, be mindful of the fact that the poolside tables have glass tops. Although tempered, they can still shatter if upturned. With this, I and my fellow colleagues wish you all a fantastic two months ahead and a fabulous start to both the Western and Chinese New Year. Warmest regards and ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai!’

Refreshingly fine and floral, with an elegance and tropical lift. It shimmers with fresh lime, grapefruit, passionfruit and vanilla. A cherry bon-bon on the nose, entices with fresh raspberry, juicy strawberry and sweet, red, toffee-apple. Cherry-red with a vibrant purple edge, gamay’s soft tannins give the palate moreish balance and weight. Flecks of aniseed and baking spices run through to the long finish.

KIDS FIT If you’ve ever watched kids in a playground, you’ve seen the three elements of fitness in action when they: run away from the kid who’s ‘it’ (endurance); cross the monkey bars (strength); and bend down to tie their shoes (flexibility). Parents, encourage your kids to do a variety of activities so they can work on all three elements. Join our all-new Kids Fit classes for children aged between 11 and 13, every Saturday at 1.30pm.

Farewell, Faithful Old Pitch On 11 December 2017, Swiss Club’s sports field saw its last match for the year before closing for upgrading. Our football convenors, Urs Lichtenberger and Thomas Koechli, look back with nostalgia on a decade of great football, and look forward with excitement to the unveiling of the new pitch. THRILLS, SPILLS AND SKILLS “It has perfectly served us for 10 years, but in recent times it has become increasingly obvious that we need a replacement. More and more players have been complaining about knee and back problems as the cushion has gone over the years. Maybe it has something to do, as well, with our age…” - Urs
“
“The pitch, but more importantly the people we play with every Monday, sometimes for many years, have become second family to me. We even maintain chat groups to keep leavers updated on activities.” - Thomas KIDS’ FOOTBALL TRAINING

Playing football on this pitch has been wonderful, and a real step up from what we had beforehand. However, because of its diverse uses – besides football and other sports sessions, it is also home for the annual Oktoberfest – it suffered excessively and fixing it was no longer an option. We are all looking forward to showing off our skills on the new pitch.

Racket Committee is Back and Ready to Serve! The Swiss Club re-established a racket committee half a year ago. The purpose of this committee is to be a consultative body for the Club on racket sports, namely tennis, padel and badminton. MEET THE MEMBERS The members of the racket committee are Thierry de Panafieu, Sasha Zehnter (Padel), Rudi Prenzlin (Men’s tennis), Mathieu Aste, Corinna Gorriz (Ladies’ tennis), Christine Aeberhard and Aileen Aschwanden (Junior tennis). Please feel free to approach any
of us if you have any queries or feedback. Thanks to members’ feedback, we have hit the ground running on a few issues. Recently, we suggested signposts for appropriate shoes on courts, which was a major factor in
court degradation. We are excited to announce a couple of events in the works for 2018, and we will organise a Davis Cup event shortly. Members will be kept informed either via the newsletter or through RELAX. Junior Interclub tennis friendlies are also being implemented.

We are WITS, Hear Us ROAR! Nothing will keep the lovely ladies of the Swiss Club down in the Women’s International Tennis Singapore doubles league. The autumn season saw all the ladies climb up to higher divisions.
LAUNCHING A LADIES’ LADDER In 2018, we will be introducing a challenging ladder system for the ladies, similar to the existing men’s tennis ladder system. Ladies, lift your game and climb up the ladder with us!
ENDING ON A HIGH Despite injuries and having new players to integrate into the league, the SC Smashers (Alpha Division), the Longline Ladies (Beta Division) and the SC Smash Hits (C Division) finished the autumn season on a high note. The Smashers especially had much to celebrate, having achieved 2nd place! Longline Ladies and Smash Hits saw some defeats but kept their heads and spirits high. Most importantly, they had fun. In the Interclub league of the Singapore Tennis Association, the
Swiss Club was represented by a ladies’ singles team and a doubles team in the 2nd Division, with team captain Corinna Gorriz. The singles team came in 3rd place, while the doubles team unluckily missed the semifinals.

TRAINING ATTAINS RESULTS As it is often said, it’s what you do before the season starts that makes a champion. Our Season 2 results certainly proved the point. In the 14-Under B category, the Swiss Club Warriors literally charged first to the finish line, leaving their opponents behind, and grabbed the golden trophy. Our youngest junior players, 10-Under Swiss Club Stars, glittered like the stars they were. They won their pool and took home medals

With all that fire on court, our juniors are already looking to 2018. They know only dedication and motivation will guarantee success. ATTENTION JUNIOR PLAYERS – WE WANT YOU! However, changes are afoot next year. As our kids are getting older,

German-Swiss Golf Club 2017 Club Championship On 11 and 12 November, 28 golfers met in Malaysia to battle it out for the title of this year’s Club champion. We wish both gentlemen all the very best. HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS Many vouchers were awarded for the first, second and third on Saturday and Sunday. The net price went to Adrian Lüdi, who had played best for his handicap, and the Club champion for 2017 is… Nikolay Dimitrov! After the award ceremony and much applause, we all made our way home with the feeling that this was a very successful weekend. As almost everyone knows everyone, we feel like a big happy family every time we meet for a tournament. A RAINY FIRST DAY On the first day, tee-off for the best flight, was at 12 o’clock, followed by the other four flights in seven minutes. Despite the rain, we were still able to start on the Allamanda Course at the Palm Resort Golf & Country Club. On the 3rd hole, the men’s Longest Drive of the day was scored by Gabriele Mauri. At the 8th hole, Nearest-to-the-Pin was won by Joachim Herrmann. At the 11th hole, the ladies’ Longest Drive was won by Barbara LizanaAllende, after which Nearest-tothe-Pin was won on the 17th hole by Massimo Gallizioli. The prizes were golf balls, since we all know how they tend to mysteriously disappear in the jungle. After the tournament, we enjoyed a buffet dinner in the golf club and then a nightcap in the hotel next door before retiring.
SUNSHINE ON THE SECOND On Sunday, the first tee-off was at 8 o’clock. This time, the weather was fine and hot for the difficult Cempaka course. Christine Peter and again Gabriele Mauri won golf balls for the Longest Drives, while Thomas Mummert and Nikolay Dimitrov took home the balls for the Nearest-to-the-Pin. Since we played in Stroke Play format (every stroke counts), the 18 holes took us about four to five hours. After long showers and a delicious buffet dinner, the award ceremony commenced. HEARTFELT THANKS We would like to take this opportunity to thank Joachim and Christine Bokhari for the organisation of this great event. Joachim continues to lead this club, after Dieter Gumpert stepped back for health reasons.

Santa Returns!
Once again, Santa Claus made his annual visit to the Swiss Club on Sunday 10 December. Just after 4pm, he rocked up in a jolly buggy, chauffeured by Chef Adrian, much to the delight of around 30 very good children waiting patiently in the Pavilion.
ALL-KNOWING SANTA Amazingly, Santa ‘knew’ personal information about the assembled children. For example, he knew that Max was a kind boy and an accomplished swimmer. He also ‘knew’ that sometimes his table manners are a little lacking. Further proof of Santa’s comprehensive knowledge of the children’s year-round behaviour was evident in his chat with Penelope, a chubby-cheeked angel in a stunning four-tiered red dress. Somehow he knew that she was a bi-lingual songbird – though she sang ‘Jingle Bells’ in English, he asked her to sing it in German. Furthermore, by some mysterious means, he knew that Penelope is not so keen on eating her vegetables.
A legend in every sense of the word, dear Santa set attainable tasks and goals for the children, praising their awesome achievements and gently pointing out areas where there was room for personal improvement. Rapt parents could be seen nodding their heads in silent support. No doubt their children will respond to Santa’s suggestions in the new year!

id… a S a t n Sa “Can you show me some moves, without hurting Santa?” - Santa to Max, junior taekwondo master “You have become one year older, I think!” - Santa to Sebastian, on recalling seeing him one year ago
GIFTS AS BIG AS KIDS! The jolly old man was ably assisted by Santarina aka Christine, who passed him a series of brightly wrapped gifts of all sizes to hand to the children. Some gifts were almost as big as the recipients. While some of the children left the wrappers of their gifts intact, others could be seen succumbing to the excitement of the occasion and ripping the paper to shreds. Big smiles broke out as all manner of toys were revealed, from the latest Barbie dolls to gigantic water blasters. What fun will be had in days to come!
“Santa is a very nice man. He comes once a year with presents and makes all the families very happy.” - Santa, on Santa Santa: “Do you think it’s going to snow?” Claudia: “No.” Santa: “Me too.” - Conversation with Claudia
A FEAST OF FESTIVE SHOPPING, FUN AND FOOD Riding on Santa’s visit, a Christmas Fair of some 15 vendors was organised in the Pavilion, starting from 10am and stretching till 7pm. The handpicked vendors offered artisanal and handmade wares ranging from olive oil and gourmet chocolate to hand-crocheted dolls and newly released children’s books. A range of workshops included hennainspired pebble painting and colourful cookie decorating. Food stations were also set up outside for the convenience and refreshment of Members. All in all, it was a delightful day. We eagerly await the return of Santa, once again, in December of 2018. Meanwhile, girls and boys, do remember to be nice, not naughty. Santa has an incredible memory and will no doubt reward good behaviour with kind words and great gifts. Nothing escapes this sharp old man from the North!
A February Filled with Disc very Set aside some time in February to attend two meaningful events – a moving exhibition that will deepen your understanding of history and humanity, and a fair that showcases the many merits of studying in Switzerland. Exhibition:
The Last Swiss Holocaust Survivors From 31 January to 25 February Jurong Regional Library
A POWERFUL PORTRAIT OF 14 SURVIVORS On 27 January, the International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorates the tragedy of the Holocaust, a genocide that took place in Europe during the Second World War period and resulted in the murder of 6 million Jews, and millions of other innocent victims, by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. In 2017 - 2018, Switzerland is presiding over the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, an intergovernmental organisation that aims to strengthen, advance and promote Holocaust education, research and remembrance. During this period, an exhibition, entitled The Last Holocaust Survivors in Switzerland, has been curated. Through 14 moving portraits of Swiss Holocaust Survivors, it gives a say to the last witnesses of the Holocaust and their descendants. Each unique portrait touchingly personalises the history of the Holocaust and preserves it for future generations. In late January, this impressive exhibition will travel to Singapore. It will be launched on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, jointly organised by the Embassies of Switzerland and Israel. It can be viewed from 31 January to 25 February at the Jurong Regional Library. For more information visit our agenda on www.eda.admin.ch/singapore

On Staying Swiss While Becoming International Sibylle Gisi, President of the Swiss School in Singapore (SSiS), chatted with us about the transformation in education underway at ‘the school next door’, her dual lives in education and the corporate world, and her love of the Swiss Club. Unbeknown to many, the Swiss School in Singapore follows the curriculum of the Canton Zug, its partner in Switzerland. Sibylle explained that it differs from Swiss schools at home in that it is a company with many stakeholders, all of whom expect quality at every level. The school is answerable to the Singapore authorities, the Swiss authorities that fund it, and above all, the students and their parents. It also fosters relationships with the other pillars of the Swiss community – the Swiss Club, the Swiss Embassy, the SwissCham Singapore and the Swiss Association.
MOTHER, BUSINESSWOMAN, TEACHER, PRINCIPAL, PRESIDENT Having been a teacher for most of her working life and more recently a principal at a school in Zürich, Sibylle was approached by the Swiss Embassy to apply for the position of President at the SSiS, which she has officially filled since August of this year.
“
I would love to keep the ‘Swissness’ of the Swiss School while fulfilling the demand for being an even more international school. Sibylle Gisi
While Sibylle’s working life has focused mainly on education, it has not been confined to it. In her midtwenties, she moved to Singapore after four days of marriage, and within four years she was the mother of three – Pascal, Alessia and Virginia, now aged 26, 25 and 22 respectively. She also ran a successful pearl trading company with her husband Christian. After a sojourn of several years back in Switzerland, Sibylle returned with her husband, who is now the CEO of Rolex Southeast Asia. Together they are clocking up their eighteenth year in Singapore. HOPES FOR THE SWISS SCHOOL Sibylle is immensely fond and rightfully proud of the Swiss School. Of her hopes and plans for its future, she shared, “I would love to keep the ‘Swissness’ of the Swiss School while fulfilling the demand for being an even more international school.”
A RARE JEWEL, IN A BEAUTIFUL SETTING On the synergy between the Swiss School and the Swiss Club, Sibylle had nothing but praise. She sees the School and the Club as a joint venture, and cherishes the ongoing collaboration, in which the Club is both friendly landlord and caterer. (The Club supplies lunches to the Swiss School students daily.) “The Swiss School is a rare jewel, located in the most beautiful spot in Singapore, surrounded by the lush greenery of the Swiss Club. What more could you wish for?” Sibylle shared that she enjoys a tête-à-tête with her husband every Friday at Arbenz. PEARLS OF WISDOM When asked for a message to send to the students of the Swiss School, Sibylle shared: “Our school is a place where children feel safe, are loved and enjoy learning. Dear children – make the most of it!” Clearly, Sibylle leads by example, having made the most of every chapter of her rich and varied life.

A PRETTY PROCESSION… AND A SAINT IN ATTENDANCE! Picture this – lights everywhere, children running around joyfully, parents and teachers talking to each other cheerfully and enjoying the festivities. We retraced our footsteps from previous years, following the familiar path from Botany Centre to Tanglin Gate and Swan Lake. SPIRITS UNDAMPENED BY RAIN A chorus of children, parents and teachers sang with enthusiasm. Not even the start of the drizzling rain could make the smiles on everyone’s faces disappear. By the time the last stop was reached, a parade of umbrellas shielded the beautiful lanterns and their carriers from the rain. After the evening’s songs were sung one last time, the teachers handed out bread to the students, which they happily shared with their parents.

Last Word GREAT FOOD AND SERVICE I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to you and your team for all the arrangements for our Christmas party. It was exactly what I had envisioned and wanted. The food and service was great, and I was particularly impressed by the two live carving stations. Please convey my thanks to the two chefs there that night. It was one of the best Christmas dinner events I have organised for my team, and I was so happy to hear many of my colleagues coming to me with the same feedback. Finding a suitable venue is a big challenge for me every year, and I am so glad I took the leap of faith to hold our party at the Swiss Club this year. Best regards, Charlene Chue, Sales Administrator, Mandarin Oriental Singapore
A WONDERFUL YEAR Please pass on our sincere thanks to all the staff for their wonderful attention and efforts throughout the last 12 months. Sincerely, Martin and Jane Rudden
EXPECTATIONS EXCEEDED The Swiss Club was our first choice for a wedding venue with its historical elegance and natural forest surroundings. We were looking for something unique and the Swiss Club exceeded our expectations. We opted for an outdoor solemnisation ceremony in the garden and coordinated everything with the Cub. However, it rained continuously and heavily on the day. Despite the odds, we decided to continue with an outdoor setup in faith that the weather would clear. The team at the Swiss Club never questioned our decision but instead supported us in every way possible (such as sourcing for umbrellas, wiping the seats down, serving drinks early when the guests arrived). Thankfully, the rain stopped 30 minutes before the ceremony and everything went ahead as planned. We are extremely impressed with the Swiss Club and we’ll definitely be back when we visit Singapore again. Keep up the great work! Regards, Brad and Carissa
PARTY-PERFECT! I am writing to thank you for helping to organise William’s birthday party. I would be grateful if you could pass on our thanks and appreciation to the guys who helped us set up the Rifle Room and catered for the event. They were all excellent. We all had a great time and William and his friends loved it! Best wishes, Susannah & Fraser
