DID YOU KNOW? Switzerland is one of the only two countries to have a square flag, along with the Vatican. The Swiss are famous for inventing Velcro, cellophane, the Swiss Army Knife, absinthe, the potato peeler, Helvetica font, LSD, muesli, edible gold chocolate and milk chocolate to name a few. Switzerland continues to lead the world in innovation, topping the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) ranking in 2017 for the seventh year in a row, ahead of the US (4th) and UK (5th). Switzerland has one of the lowest crime rates of industrialised countries despite liberal Swiss gun laws. Swiss citizens can challenge any law passed by Parliament – if they can gather 50,000 signatures against the law within 100 days. If successful, a national vote is held and the outcome decides whether to accept or reject the law.

Swiss School in Singapore’s Project Week: All About Singapore!

Oktoberfest – Our Best Yet

A Note from the Editor Dear Members, Phew! Mother’s Day, Summerfest and Father’s Day seemed to arrive just days apart (well, weeks apart). Each event was a resounding triumph, with great food, amazing service and happy Members and guests. It never ceases to amaze me how effortless it all looks when one is in the midst of the celebrations. But behind the scenes is another story. An enormous amount of effort goes into organising and orchestrating these events. I for one know that a certain male sacrificed entire nights of sleep while he concurrently planned for Summerfest and Oktoberfest. Kudos to all of the Swiss Club staff for their unwavering commitment. They never slip up, and their genuine smiles never slip from their faces. Swiss National Day will soon be upon us. As the second largest event of the Swiss Club calendar, it is always ‘full house’ and always an unforgettable experience. There is something inimitably magical about the notes of wind instruments resonating through the jungle. It may seem incongruous, a Swiss band in lederhosen performing in Singapore, but at the Swiss Club it seems perfectly natural. Do secure your tickets for Swiss National Day and Oktoberfest. I’ve heard they’re selling like hot rösti… And enjoy your wonderful Club, a place where wonders never cease. Till next issue – Happy National Days, Switzerland and Singapore! Yours,

A Word from the

Committee

Club life will inevitably be impacted by the renovation, but the management team and staff are committed to go the extra mile to continue to provide Members with attractive facilities and acceptable alternative arrangements.

Dear Members of the Swiss Club, I would like to wish each and every one of you a wonderful summer break. Back in 2008, my wife and I, along with our two daughters, joined the Club. They both had attended the Swiss School, whilst spending plenty of time at the Club. The younger one is certainly responsible for the success of the Swiss Club’s popcorn chicken. Being a Member for such a long time, we sometimes forget how beautiful this club is. You only really realise it again when you bring friends to the Club and witness how astounded they are by the landscape and cuisine. Having been a Member for so many years, I finally joined the Committee as the Treasurer last year. I could not have joined at a more interesting time. The upcoming renovation of the Club is an exciting project. Though it requires a lot of extra effort from the management team and the Committee Members, it is certainly rewarding. The first step towards bringing our Club to the next level is the renovation of the pool. The pool is the centrepiece of the Club and, after so many years, it certainly deserves a makeover. The upgrading will start early July and we hope that, by September, Members can jump into it again and admire the new design. Instead of fading paint, it will have beautiful new tiles to entice Members to enjoy a swim in resort-style surroundings.

Club life will inevitably be impacted by the renovation, but the management team and staff are committed to go the extra mile to continue to provide Members with attractive facilities and acceptable alternative arrangements. Please continue to join us at the Club during the renovations. The Committee has decided to retain all employees throughout the renovation period, as we believe that this is the appropriate thing to do. Our sporting staff have agreed to fill diverse roles during this time, thereby allowing us to reduce external contractor costs. Lastly, at the end of June, we had closed our financial year with a positive result. I would like to congratulate Aaron, the management team and all employees for achieving this result. I wish all of you a wonderful summer break and hope to see you at the Club soon! Don’t miss our National Day celebration on 3 August. Yours sincerely,

T. Vonrueti

A Message from the

General Manager

The Swiss National Day celebrations will be held on 3 August in a familiar but different setting. It’s a happy coincidence that the celebration falls less than a week before Singapore’s own National Day.

Dear Members, Summer Holidays are upon us once again. Safe travels to all who are travelling back home to enjoy the break with family and friends. Summer at the Swiss Club will be a totally new experience this year, for both Members and staff. As you know, we embark on an exciting journey with the commencement of our planned Redevelopment Project, starting with the Leisure Pool on 8 July 2019. In line with our efforts to minimise the inconvenience for our Members who are spending their summer break in Singapore, the British Club has generously offered the use of their swimming pool and dining facilities from Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm. Alternatively, our lap pool will still be open daily along with all other sports and F&B facilities for your enjoyment. Whilst new changes are on the horizon, age-old customs are not forgotten. The Swiss National Day celebrations will be held on 3 August in a familiar but different setting. It’s a happy coincidence that the celebration falls less than a week before Singapore’s own National Day. As it is unofficially considered a dual celebration of the close ties between our two mighty little countries, it is fitting that this celebration welcomes Members of all nationalities as well as Singaporeans. Do bring your family and friends, wherever they hail from. Everyone’s welcome!

Swiss National Day is followed by the undisputed party of the year, our Swiss Club Oktoberfest. And this year’s event promises to eclipse all of its predecessors – for it will be our 20th Oktoberfest. The festivities span five days, from 11 to 15 September. Tickets are selling fast – have you booked yours yet? Sincere thanks are in order to all staff for their commitment and dedication as we close our financial year (FY18/19) ending 30 June. Despite the major changes in Management this past year, the team united and diligently worked on to achieve better than expected positive results. This would not have been possible without the continued support and encouragement from you, our valued Members and Committee. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Club. Once again, happy holidays and safe travels! Best Regards,

A. Lim

Aaron Lim Acting General Manager aaron.lim@swissclub.org.sg

Club Notice On 22 July 2019, the Swiss Club will undertake its regulatory annual electrical shutdown and hold its Annual Staff Party. A breakfast buffet will be served at Pergola from 8am to 10pm, after which all F&B outlets will close for the day. The Club’s Shuttle Bus and Club Security will remain operational. For emergencies, please call 6591 9437. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Swiss Club Redevelopment Update by William Forwood

A detailed design of the Club renovation has been completed. The competitive tender for the build works was released to 5 pre-qualified contracting companies. The successful contractor has been selected and the Phase 1 works to the pool and Jungle Bar will commence on 8 July 2019. The kitchen equipment for the new kitchens has been ordered and is being manufactured. The targeted date for Phase 1 completion and pool re-opening is October 2019. URA approval has been obtained subject to minor changes and re-submission. An independent Client Representative has been appointed to manage the project on behalf of the Club – Facility Asia, headed by John Talbott.

$65 per bottle $14 per 150ml glass

This Fendant (100% Chasselas) from the exceptional Fully terroir in the canton of Valais displays fragrant aromas of white flowers on the nose, with notes of honey and white peach. On the palate, the flowery character is complemented by beeswax, and an exotic note of tangerine in the background. It is dry and refreshing. A great aperitif wine, it pairs well with charcuterie, cheese and seafood.

This juicy Merlot from Ticino seduces with its aromas of plums, black cherries, blackberries, and hints of sweet spice, all kept in balance by well-embedded oak notes and velvety tannins. It has an elegant structure and a long finish. Great with a plate of cold cuts or cheeses, but also with lighter vegetable or meat dishes, its jovial fruitiness makes it a good match for both Western and Asian cuisine.

A wine with many faces. Initially characterised in the nose by tropical fruits and even cinnamon, one would expect great opulence on the palate. But no, the wine is very fresh, even fruity but precise. To ultimately end in a very aromatic finish.

This Cuvée is simply fun every day of the week. It has seductive and invigorating cherry aromatics, along with warm spices and a light toasted note. Yet the wine is juicy while being elegant and refreshing. A fitting ambassador for the Carnuntum region.

So Much to Love About

Mother’s Day Brunch! On Sunday 12 May, the Swiss Club hosted its annual Mother’s Day Brunch. Attendance was up 25 percent compared to last year, and the compliments were flowing along with the champagne.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD (OF COURSE!) As always, Chef Adrian and his team pulled out all stops to prepare a feast fit for a queen. In addition to the usual buffet favourites, an array of new live stations turned out delicious delicacies including Tuna Ceviche, White Asparagus Risotto, Swiss Raclette, Spring Chicken with Rosemary, Angus Beef Striploin with Béarnaise Sauce and Mixed Fruit Flambé with Ice Cream. Swiss Club Member Mrs Blickensdorfer summed it up when she said, “The food was great. The risotto was particularly fantastic and so were the live stations… if my kids are happy, I’m happy.” Another happy Member and satisfied diner, Stefanie Lauber was equally kind with her compliments. “The food is very tasty. I loved the oysters, the raclette, the salmon, the Movenpick ice cream… actually everything!” she said.

I’m very happy to share the occasion with my mum, who just arrived in Singapore yesterday. Mrs Klingenberg

GETTING BETTER ALL THE TIME Mrs Klingenberg, a Swiss Club Member and a regular supporter of Club events, celebrated the occasion with a heart-warming and picture-perfect tri-generational gathering. “I’m very happy to share the occasion with my mum, who just arrived in Singapore yesterday,” she said. “The food is outstanding. I was here for the Easter Brunch and that was good, but today’s even better,” she said. “Chef at his best!”

FUN THINGS TO DO As per tradition, there was free face and body painting for the kids. We spotted tigers, pirates, princesses and all manner of magical creatures flitting around the tables and the grounds.

The kids’ activities are good – and so is the good flow of champagne! Inge Sibbing

Swiss Club member Rami Politis, generously praised the children’s activities. “It’s very child friendly. As a mother, it makes your life so much easier and it’s really nice to see the kids enjoying themselves,” she said. “This is my first time here at the Club’s Mother’s Day Brunch,” she added. Inge Sibbing, another esteemed Member, agreed, “I’m enjoying the fantastic buffet and the great variety. The kids’ activities are good – and so is the good flow of champagne!”

LOVED ONES, BELOVED MEMORIES Great food and free-flow champagne aside, the best thing about Mother’s Day Brunch was the outpouring of love at every table.

I love having my family around me – and of course all of the great food! Larissa Devente

When asked what she was enjoying most, Member Larissa Devente replied, “I love having my family around me – and of course all of the great food!” Her handsome son Vadim said, “I love my Mum (most of all)!”

SUMMERFEST SENSATION The Swiss Club’s second annual Summerfest was held on Saturday 1 June 2019. The weather was kind and the day was wonderful.

A NOVEL WELCOME Attendees were welcomed with a fresh garland of purple and white orchids and an invitation to go ‘fishing’ in the lucky dip – not your usual manual lucky dip, but a tub of egg-shaped ‘fish’ containing prize vouchers that were ‘caught’ with an actual fishing rod! The novel welcome set the tone for the day. This year’s Summerfest had no central stage, but a roaming emcee cum magician who kept the crowd entertained with his lively banter and charming tricks. DANCING TO A JUNGLE BEAT At 12.30pm and 2pm, the jungle reverberated with the rousing beat of Damaru Singapore, a 4-piece drum and percussion ensemble. Their stirring performance got everyone on their feet, and we spotted many musically inclined little ones dancing ‘like nobody was watching’. THE NEW BOUNCY CASTLE UNVEILED The Summerfest was the first public outing of the Swiss Club’s very own smartly branded bouncy castle. The enthusiastic climbing, jumping, tumbling, sliding and squealing of the kids confirmed the evergreen appeal of this inflatable attraction. It just goes to show that there will always be a place or good old-fashioned physical fun. Parents and corporate events organisers, do note that the Swiss Club’s bouncy castle is available for hire for children’s birthday parties and family-focused events. GUEST APPEARANCE BY SPIDER-MAN A partner vendor at the Summerfest was Singapore Comic Con. The organisers behind the annual Singapore Comic Cons at Marina Bay Sands generously supplied a photo wall complete with a live ‘Spider-man’ who bravely sweated it out in top-to-toe lycra to thrill the kids (and a few grownups) with his nimble moves and superhero poses. Singapore Comic Con also hosted talented illustrators including Inky Cat Studio aka Stephanie Hew. It was a great opportunity to meet the artist and browse and buy her charming merchandise, which included quirky badges, stickers and gorgeous wall art prints.

RETAIL THERAPY WITH A DIFFERENCE Two flea markets featured external vendors and member vendors. A refreshing alternative to the cookiecutter shopping mall experience, the vendors’ wares ranged from all-natural functional skincare and one-of-a-kind batik clothing to henna art, tarot card reading and a very attractive digital money transfer company. An especially interesting vendor, My Home Onsen displayed its ultrasonic bubblebath and foot spa. Developed in Germany, the devices offer a range of benefits from slimming to boosting circulation and deep cleansing. The friendly ladies in attendance invited us to experience a hand spa with lemoninfused salts, which left our hands hydrated and satiny-smooth. Thanks go to Just Swiss, the Official Gift Sponsor of the Summerfest, who generously sponsored a gift hamper for the 2pm lucky draw. A total of five hourly lucky draws rewarded winners with attractive prizes including Swiss Club dining vouchers and a stay at The Guesthouse, and culminating in the first prize of a Swiss Club Recreation Membership. Special thanks go to InstaRem, the Official Event Sponsor, whose generous financial support made the day possible.

FOOD, DRINK… DUNK! No event, especially at the Swiss Club, would be complete without eating and drinking. The Summerfest did not disappoint. Food stalls served delicious burgers, sausages and other fingerlicking (i.e. cutlery-free) fare. The drinks stall dispensed juice, sparkling mineral water and ice-cold beer. An old-school ice cream cart did a brisk trade selling ‘ice cream sandwiches’, a nostalgic and distinctly local treat that is surprisingly addictive. Culina, one of the Club’s valued suppliers, sold wine at below-retail prices. We sampled a delicious Mount Riley Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, and a luscious Jean Leon Merlot from Spain. Alvin, Culina’s knowledgeable wine specialist, told us that Jean Leon was a renegade turned taxi driver turned friend and confidante to movie stars like Sinatra and James Dean… We sipped the delicious drop as we drank in the thrilling story. Speaking of refreshing, a highlight of the Summerfest was the ever-popular carnival attraction of the Dunking Tank. Kudos to our sporting GM Aaron, who endured a series of dunkings with a gracious smile. FIRST FOR FAMILY-FRIENDLINESS In fact, kudos to the entire team and all attendees, included supportive Members and curious non-Members (some of whom we hope will become Members). The Summerfest sensation proved once again that the Swiss Club is the premier family-friendly private club in Singapore.

ABOUT OUR SPONSORS JUST SWISS, OFFICIAL GIFT SPONSOR A family-owned Swiss brand of essential oils, roof diffusers and ‘functional creams’, Just Swiss (pronounced ‘Yoos Swiss’) was founded in 1930 by the visionary entrepreneur Ulrich Jüstrich. Its superb products harness the healing and health-giving properties of plants. In the course of sampling its silky, subtly scented creams, we learned that thyme is a natural remedy for coughs and colds, lavender is a soothing balm for insect bites, and juniper aids blood circulation. It struck us that this long established brand had been doing for the best part of a century what many younger brands are just waking up to – the power and goodness of nature. INSTAREM, OFFICIAL EVENT SPONSOR Founded in 2014 in Australia, InstaReM (short for Instant Remittance) is a Singapore-headquartered Fintech company that provides fast, secure and cost-efficient digital cross-border money transfer services for individuals and businesses in over 55 countries. It offers zero-margin currency exchange rates aligned with real-time rates published by Thomson Reuters and very low fees of between 0.25 and 1 percent. A flat fee of just 0.25 percent is charged for larger transactions above $10K. It all adds up to a highly attractive alternative to bank transfers and the risk-laden practice of hand-carrying hard cash while travelling. If you need more convincing, InstaReM has been rated the #1 Cost-effective Remittance Platform in Asia & Other Corridors by World Bank. SWISS CLUB MEMBERS’ EXCLUSIVE PROMOTION Apply the coupon code: SWISSCLUB to enjoy $15 OFF your 1st transaction To find out more or sign up, visit www.instarem.com

10TH SUMMER CUP AT THE SWISS CLUB The Summerfest coincided with the much-anticipated 10th Summer Cup, in which a total of 10 teams participated. The thrilling final between the Swiss FC and the Latin Kings kept the supporters on the edge of their seats with a score of 3-3 and extra time, after the result was 1-1 in regular time. Congratulations to the Latin Kings, who emerged the victors. As per tradition, the event concluded with a hearty barbecue at the Jungle Bar, which was attended by close to 120 players, sponsors, family and friends. Special thanks to event sponsors: Carros, Lumen Capital Investors, Opel, PhysioActive and the Swiss Club.

Another Fantastic

Father’s Day Brunch!

On Sunday 16 June, a very healthy turnout of 65 diners, the majority of them our Members, celebrated Father’s Day at Arbenz. Great food, great company and great vibes made the day delightful. A FEAST FIT FOR KINGS Following the queenly spread whipped up for Mother’s Day in May, the kitchen rose to the occasion with a feast of old favourites and novel new items to tickle the tastebuds of the most jaded palate. A generous buffet was accompanied by a series of live stations in the Rifle Lounge. The novel pasta station served a Japanised dish of angel hair pasta with furikake, sakura ebi and lemon zest. The carving station served succulent pork loin with crackling and rack of lamb with all the trimmings. A dramatic dessert station put on a show of ‘fire and ice’ in the form of pineapple flambé with coconut ice cream. And another turned out golden-brown rösti with smoked bacon and cheese. (Is your mouth watering yet?) SMOKING HOT BARBECUE STATION Guest Chef Karl Dobler from the acclaimed Table At 7 restaurant graced the occasion and presided over a popular barbecue station. His thrilling grills included sirloin steak, tiger prawns, veal sausages, pork ribs, Cajun chicken and baked potatoes – smoking hot and cooked to perfection.

KIND WORDS FOR THE CLUB Events always present a great opportunity for gathering feedback from Members and guests. As usual, the praise was plentiful. Our Member Mr Lim spoke for many if not all present when he said, “I enjoyed the food, the great ambience and the good family time.” Fellow Member Eric Foelmli added, “Above all, being together with the family is what I appreciate the most. I also really enjoyed the barbecue selection.” Naveen Menon, also a Member, concurred, “I enjoyed our family time most of all. I played two hours of tennis this morning with my boys and friends. I had a friendly double match against friends. It was very convenient to be able to take a shower after our game and come here for lunch. It’s the best view in town!” Naveen’s wife Sumi added, “Yusri made it perfect as usual.”

Being together with the family is what I appreciate the most. Eric Foelmli

Markus Steger, the husband of our Committee Member, Caroline Steger, complimented his wife on her choice of “a great bottle of wine”. Members Jonathan and Joanna Donne remarked how much their kids were enjoying the desserts, and Member Joshua Politis commended everything – the food, wine, scenery and company. LOVING WORDS FOR DADS In talking to the diners, we were privy to some touching tributes to fathers. Here’s a sampler. “My dad may be a man of few words but he looks out for us in our time of needs,” said Sherman Lim. “My dad is very supportive all the time. Here’s wishing Daddy a good 2019!” said Hugo Foelmli. “Best dad ever!” declared Aleshay Menon. Aryan Menon followed up with, “My dad’s a really good tennis player and I want to be just like him!” Big brother Rohan Menon added, “He’s a really good dad and he supports me in whatever I try to do. He’s always there for me.” On that note, may we say – thank you, Members, for always being so supportive of our Club events. See you at our Swiss National Day celebrations!

Yoga is for EveryBODY The Swiss Club continued its successful partnership with The High Commission of India in Singapore in hosting the International Day of Yoga at the Rifle Lounge on 23 June 2019.

UNITY IN DIVERSITY This is the second consecutive year in which the Club has pledges its support as a community partner in conducting yoga. The Day was open to Members and the public. Harsheeni Rajoo, the guest Yoga trainer for the session, said, “This is my second year of leading the practice at the Swiss Club Singapore for International Day of Yoga. Words are not enough to express how humbling and inspiring it was to gather as one community, share a space and unite in all our diversity.” Yogis got to experience a series of asanas in a calm and rhythmic flow under Harsheeni’s guidance.

Asanas performed during International Day of Yoga at Swiss Club Sun Salutations Virabhadrasana 1 (Warrior 1) Virabhadrasana 2 (Warrior 2) Anjaneyasana (High Lunge Pose) Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) Viparita Virabhadrasana (Reverse Warrior) Uthan Pristhasana (Lizard Pose) Balasana (Child’s Pose) Shavasana (Corpse Pose) The congruence of different body types, men and women, all performing asanas in one rhythmic flow, embodies that Yoga is for everyBODY and all are equal on the mats. Do join us at our next International Day of Yoga! Namaste! Article and photos courtesy of Haresh Kumar, Swiss Club Marketing & Communications Manager

A Show of Great Sports May was a great month for competitions. We saw both the Adult Singles Swiss Club Championship and the 2nd Junior Tournament of the year. BIGGEST EVER ADULTS CHAMPIONSHIP The Adults’ Tournament beat all records with 50 players competing on the tennis courts. It was a triumph in itself to see so many of you competing and enjoying the tennis. We were treated to a lot of great matches with a high quality of play. In the Ladies’ category, the seeded number 1 Alexia confirmed her ranking and won the trophy against Marika. But what a match! These two ladies treated us to an epic battle. The score speaks for itself – 11-9 to Alexia in the tiebreak of the last set. Well done to both. In the Intermediate category, two youngsters reached the final. Noah beat Sebastian and proved that he is a really solid player. Sebastian also showed great skills to reach the final by winning against experienced players. Next year, you’re good to go in the Elite category, guys! In the Elite Men’s category, the defending champion Stefano secured his second title in a row against Thierry. But there were some tough matches played along the way. Congratulations on taking home another trophy!

WELL DONE, WELL DONE, WELL DONE… Special mention goes to the three de Panafieu brothers who won in three different categories. Your parents must be so proud of you, guys, as are we. Thanks to all parents and children for their participation. The two recent competitions were a great show of sportsmanship and everyone should be commended for their great attitudes, in victory and in defeat. Bravo! The tournament dinner was a fun-filled affair with around 50 attendees. A big ‘thank you’ to all who shared this wonderful evening with us! On the weekend following the Adults’ Tournament, the spotlight was on the youngsters. It was gratifying to see the vast improvement of our passionate young players. We also saw several kids playing their first tournament and catching the tennis ‘bug’. As lifelong players know, there is no cure! Strength in Numbers: Group Fitness at the Swiss Club

Group fitness is the latest fitness trend to take the world by storm. While not inherently new, working out in groups has become more and more popular over the last few years. NEW CLASSES, COMING SOON In the interests of always switching up our fitness offerings, we have several new group classes in the pipeline. For example, an outdoors class is set to start at the Club’s new fitness corner, and we are also firming up the details of boxing-based group classes. Do join us for a group class, either with a bunch of buddies or on your own. While fitness with friends is undoubtedly fun and motivating, fitness with ‘friends you haven’t yet met’ adds a new element of excitement.

WHICH GROUP’S FOR YOU? With numbers of people joining group fitness classes hitting all-time highs, it looks like the trend will continue to grow over the next few years. Never ones to lag behind the times, we have many group classes taking place at the Swiss Club on a regular basis. Here’s a sampler. Boot Camps are regularly held on Mondays and Thursdays, with more dates set to be added in after the summer break. Indoor Cycling classes are held weekly at 11am. Aquabiking classes are held at 9am on Saturdays and 7pm on Wednesdays.

Are You Game?

At the Swiss Club, small groups of hobbyists and diehard gamers (of the traditional kind) meet on a regular basis to play, chat and have some good old-fashioned fun. Perhaps you’d care to join them?

MAHJONG The Swiss Club’s mahjong group plays by international rules and welcomes players of all levels of ability, including beginners. Convenor Jill Boschung has over 15 years of experience playing mahjong and is happy to give newbies one-on-one lessons to build their confidence before joining the group. However, if you’d prefer to observe the game before joining, you are more than welcome to come and watch. Currently the group has 10 regular players but is hoping to expand to 16. The group plays every Monday evening from 7:30pm to 10:30pm for a friendly game of points. The year-end dinner has become a beloved tradition and always includes attractive prizes and lots of laughs. To find out more about playing mahjong at the Swiss Club, please contact Jill Boschung at: T: 9022 4605 E: jillbos@yahoo.com

JASS Have you been in Asia for a while and miss playing jass? Or have you just arrived in Singapore and want to keep up your jass playing skills? Either way, you are welcome to join the Swiss Club’s jass group, who meet six times a year in the Rifle Lounge. A diverse group of people who comprise mainly Swiss but include a few Germans and Asians, players span a wide range of ages. They share a common passion for jass, a love of Swiss food and a good laugh, and an aversion to wearing the loser’s tie at the end of the evening. The group’s next events are scheduled for 30 August and 11 October at 7.30pm, so mark your calendars! To find out more about playing jass at the Swiss Club, contact Nadine Breitenmoser or Michael Sutter at: E: jass@swissclub.org.sg

SKAT Funny name, interesting game… For all those who have ever wondered about skat, let us enlighten you. Skat is a card game for three players. It is usually played with four participants, with each player taking a turn to sit out a game and be the dealer. What’s more, skat is a UNESCO-recognised intangible cultural heritage in Germany. The Swiss Club’s skat group meets every Wednesday evening from 8pm onwards at the Jungle Bar for a friendly 12 rounds. Why not give it a go? An Accountant Who Counts on Her Colleagues Among the many things she enjoys about working at the Swiss Club, Chief Accountant Lydia Zhai truly values her supportive colleagues. TOUCHING TEAMWORK AT WORK Lydia has worked at the Club since April 2015. She has clearly loved every day of her working life, even the late nights to meet the looming deadlines. “I really enjoy the family-like working environment at the Club. I am also blessed with supportive colleagues and understanding upper management,” she shared. Lydia recounted a touching instance when her colleagues rallied to support her. “In our annual stock check, my colleagues from the F&B department and my team willingly worked till 3am to conduct a thorough stock check when they did not have to,” recalled Lydia. Their show of

solidarity enabled her to complete her report on time for the Club’s auditors. Outside of her job scope, Lydia also enjoys the special events in the Club, such as the recent Summerfest covered in this issue of Relax. She looks forward to the direct contact with Members and proudly joins the ‘front of house’ staff, reciprocating the support her colleagues have extended to her. HEALTHY CHOICES After hours, Lydia enjoys walking by the lake near her home to keep fit. Going by her response to our request for a dining recommendation, she also makes healthy choices when it comes to diet.

“The Omega 3 Salad never disappoints,” said Lydia. A MESSAGE TO MEMBERS We asked Lydia to take advantage of this opportunity to pass on a message to the Members she diligently serves behind the scenes.

“We will soon be beginning our renovation of our Club to improve our infrastructure and service to our Members,” said Lydia. “I hope that you will continue to support the Club and understand that any inconvenience caused will be for the greater good.” Great talking to you, Lydia!

Imhoof’s ‘Eldorado’ Screens at the EUFF

During the 29th European Union Film Festival (EUFF), the Embassy of Switzerland was pleased to present the latest documentary by acclaimed Swiss director Markus Imhoof, ‘Eldorado’. A PLATFORM FOR EUROPEAN FILM Every year the Festival provides a platform for European movies and introduces them to a local audience to further cultural diversity and exchange between Singapore and Europe. The venue, for the third year in a row, was the National Gallery Singapore. The engaging festival deepened and strengthened the close links between the 27 European Nations present and the host country of Singapore. After his 1982 film classic ‘The Boat Is Full’, Imhoof revisits the topic of migration and the place of refugees in society with his deeply personal documentary ‘Eldorado’. His reflections are intertwined with his own family history, thus allowing him to craft both a very personal and human view on a heated topic. THE PERSONAL MEETS THE UNIVERSAL During the Second World War, the Imhoof family took in the

malnourished Italian girl Giovanna as part of the children’s aid programme of the Swiss Red Cross. The programme only allowed a limited stay, which soon separated the fates of the then 4-year-old Imhoof and Giovanna. After her return to Italy, she fell ill and died at just 13 years of age. In ‘Eldorado’, Imhoof channels his feelings over the loss of Giovanna through letters, pictures and imaginary dialogues. This forms the emotional background of his reflections on the contemporary refugee crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. The settings span a navy ship of the (since discontinued) Operation Mare Nostrum, the living conditions in a refugee camp in Italy, and asylum hearings in Switzerland. In the course of the journey, individual stories and fates illustrate how the global flow of capital and goods is interlinked with migration and the humanitarian

crisis that the world is facing. Hence the movie bridges the gap between the political and the individual, since all of us are in some capacity linked to those economical forces underlying the migration crisis. ‘I’ VERSUS ‘US’ On a more fundamental level, the crux of the problem is presented through a discovery Imhoof made as a child in relation to Giovanna. It is the conflict of ‘I’ versus ‘Us’, which for a healthy and functioning society must be balanced. ‘Eldorado’ encourages discussion on an important topic and does not shy away from a critical perspective on current trends. The result is a movie that shows that the promise of an ‘Eldorado’, a better life in a better-off country, is inherently flawed.

I N T E R E S T NEWS FROM THE

Swiss School in Singapore’s Project Week:

All About Singapore! ‘All About Singapore!’ was the theme of this year’s Project Week for our Kindergarten and Primary 1 and 2 classes. The objective of this departure from classroom learning was to introduce our children to stories, traditions and places in Singapore. OUT AND ABOUT Our children spent the week in mixed age groups, attending various workshops and out and about on excursions.

Accompanied by their teachers, the students explored Peranakan House, where they learned more about the unique Straits Chinese culture and had a taste of

Peranakan cuisine. At the Asian Civilisations Museum, they were intrigued by the fascinating relics of Singapore’s colourful past. And at Haw Par Villa, they learned about traditional Chinese folklore. En route, they visited various parks and playgrounds around the island, stepping out of their comfort zones and stepping into neighbourhoods that were new to them. LEARNING IN ACTION The Project Week was definitely an educational yet action-packed week for the children. The week flew by and our students took away a wealth of precious knowledge about Singapore, the amazing little country they call home for now.

A GOOD CAUSE Dear Haresh, I would like to take this time to thank you very much for supporting our event yesterday. We had a lovely turnout of yogis, coming together for a great cause, building awareness and making a difference in this world to make it a better place for all. The funds raised will go, as mentioned, to women affected by climate change in Bangladesh, Nepal and Vietnam. We could not have done this without the Swiss Club’s kind gesture of providing the venue and valuable support. Thank you so very much. Wishing you a wonderful week ahead, Nadja AN AMAZING EVENT Dear Christine, A huge thank you to all of the Swiss Club team involved in our big event last Saturday. Everybody agreed it was amazing, starting with the aperó on the giant chessboard, to all the arrangements including the delicious food and fantastic service. All of your staff were so kind and made us feel very welcome at the Swiss Club! Please extend our gratitude to everyone! Best regards, Cristina Flath

A SUCCESSFUL CELEBRATION Christine – just a quick note to say thank you to all for helping make Arthur’s birthday a huge success. Everything was perfect and we truly appreciate the help! Best regards, Joanna Donne A MEMORABLE MEAL Hi Mark, It was amazing! The mise en bouche was perfect. The 3-way scallops were just divine – it was the first time for my family and friends from overseas to try Hokkaido scallops. And they were blown away by the freshness and the creative preparation. The black pepper beef was so tender and perfect with the asparagus. And ending on your crème brulee was a highlight for us French! As usual, the staff, the setting, the attention to detail for every plate was superb. A massive thank you for making this day so memorable for us. Regards, Sandra Tassilly
