A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Suzanne Lauridsen Editor, Relax

Dear Members, Luck and love – what wonderful things to welcome into our lives. I hope you enjoyed an abundance of both during the Swiss Club’s Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day celebrations. Check out the photos of both in this issue. And may you continue to be lucky in love, and lucky in all areas of your life including your health, throughout 2020. On the subject of health, I hope that you manage to escape the ill-effects of the COVID-19. Take comfort in the fact that the Singapore Government has to be one of the most vigilant and responsive governments in the world when it comes to handling a health crisis. They had plenty of practice with SARS. That said, be vigilant and stay well. Rest assured, also, that the Swiss Club is taking all measures possible to protect Members and staff from infection. At the time I am writing this, the Club remains COVID-19 free. During this issue’s ‘shelf life’, Easter will have come and gone. The much-anticipated Easter Brunch promises a wonderful time as always. The sumptuous spread never disappoints, and there are always activities for the kids. While you sip on Champagne, your little ones can paint an Easter egg. Sounds like a recipe for a happy sunny Sunday? It is. Book your table now! Wishing you a Healthy, Happy Easter! Yours,

A Word from the

Committee

Currently, we are on schedule for completion of the entire project in late summer. As you may have seen, we have some new roof tiles on the main building already and the interiors of the building have been completely gutted ahead of the installation of new equipment and structures.

Dear Members, As you are all no doubt well aware, the Swiss Club redevelopment is well under way. I think it is fair to say that the swimming pool and the Jungle Cove improvements have been successful. In fact, we have had significant amounts of positive feedback on both of these projects. An overseas Member who was staying in the Guesthouse said to me, “You have finally done what I was hoping for 20 years ago!” Business volumes at all of our food and beverage outlets are currently ahead of our somewhat pessimistic projections. This is likely due to a number of factors including the significant price discounts we have offered, virus fears which seem to have driven some activity away from central areas to clubs and more peripheral areas, and the significant effort made by all of the Swiss Club staff during this difficult period. All the food and beverage staff have been extremely positive and hardworking throughout the renovation period, and they are certainly getting fit with all of the additional walking that has been required! Currently, we are on schedule for completion of the entire project in late summer. As you may have seen, we have some new roof tiles on the main

6

building already and the interiors of the building have been completely gutted ahead of the installation of new equipment and structures. If the final product is up to the standard we have at the pool and Jungle Cove already, I think we will all be very pleased with the result. Finally, the Committee recently spent a long Saturday afternoon discussing plans for the Club after the renovation. A wide range of topics was discussed but the overall focus of our discussions was on making the benefits of being a Member of the Swiss Club more obvious and transparent. If you have any thoughts on this topic, feel free to speak to any of the Committee Members or Club management. Regards,

M. Bell Michael Bell Secretary

A Message from the

General Manager

If break dancing is more your cup of tea (aka your glass of beer), please join us with your biggest hairdo and fluffiest shoulder pads, complete with blue mascara and yellow eye shadow, at our first-ever 80s Retro Party on 25 April.

Dear Members Hope all our Members are keeping healthy and well in light of the current COVID-19 epidemic. Rest assured that the Swiss Club management have taken necessary measures to ensure the safety of all Members, including daily temperature checks on our staff and vendors, and providing hand sanitisers and surgical masks for anyone who may be feeling unwell. I also seek your assistance in helping to keep the Club safe. Kindly refrain from visiting the Club if you have travelled to China within the past 28 days, or if you are feeling unwell. I am confident that we will ride out this storm and emerge stronger. As we step up our efforts to keep the Club safe, we are also stepping up our efforts to keep the Club FUN. Look out for a myriad of new and improved events over the coming months. The ever-entertaining Quiz Night is back on 28 February, but this time in a league format. We will be crowning our champions in November and grant them bragging rights for all of 2021! If break dancing is more your cup of tea (aka your glass of beer), please join us with your biggest hairdo and fluffiest shoulder pads, complete with blue mascara and yellow eye shadow, at our first-ever 80s Retro Party on 25 April.

As we approach the midway point of the Club’s Masterplan renovations, I would like to once again thank all Members for your patience and support. I do hope you are enjoying the leisure pool and Jungle Cove. In the coming weeks, we will be sending out another round of the Members’ Pulse survey. Please use this opportunity to provide your views and ideas on the Club’s facilities, services and offerings once the renovations are completed. More information will be provided via our weekly Newsletter and the Swiss Club app. If you have not already done so, do sign up for the Swiss Club app to receive the latest updates and promotions. Last but not least, the Party of the Year is back for its 21st instalment. Mark your calendars for Swiss Club’s Oktoberfest happening from 30 September to 4 October 2020. A delicate wine made from selected Pinot Grigio grapes from the Venezia area. In pre-Roman time, this area was inhabited by the Arusnati, the same people that inhabited the Valpolicella. It has an aging capacity of 2 to 3 years.

Produced from grapes from the hills of Valpolicella region, this wine is aged in Slavonia oak barrels for 1 year and for a further 6 months in the bottle. It has a good body with a well-balanced and harmonious structure. The aftertaste confirms the fresh bouquet with clear notes of cherry and currants.

A

s per annual tradition, we greeted the lunar new year with a rowdy, vibrant lion dance on 2 February 2020. The Wen Yang lion dance troupe drummed, clashed, pranced and danced around the premises, commencing at 10.40am from The Guesthouse. A healthy turnout of over 60 children and adults beheld the spectacular performance. BLESSINGS BESTOWED A dynamic drumming performance by three members of the troupe cued the entrance of two beautiful, embellished ‘lions’, accompanied by the venerable God of Fortune. The golden lions delighted young and old with their playful antics. They reared up on their hind legs, shook their majestic heads and without a doubt frightened off any evil spirits that had dared to linger. They may have also inadvertently frightened a small child or two, but no tears were shed.

14

LUCKY NUMBERS REVEALED A highlight of every lion dance is the revelation of the lucky numbers, fashioned out of orange peel by a clever lion. This year’s numbers were: 3126 The lions then moved on to ‘bless’ the office on level 2, after which they proceeded to Bukit Kiosk, the carpark, swimming pool, Jungle cove, Pavilion and the kitchen. Thanks to all those who attended this fun event. Here’s wishing one and all an abundance of good fortune and good health in the Year of the Rat.

An amuse bouche of Poached Oyster or Beef Tataki was served soon after the diners’ arrival, along with a long-stemmed red rose for every lady. The delicious starter of Torched Carabinaros was well-received, as were the mains of Pork Presa and Ocean Trout. Wine, spirits and sparkling conversation flowed. And for the finale, Passionfruit Créme Brûlée struck just the right note – not too sweet, not too heavy and totally delicious. All in all, it was another perfect evening for lovers and lovers of good food.

What a Time We Had!

T

he Chinese New Year tennis and swimming camps at the Swiss Club were a huge success. The pictures speak!

A SMASH HIT WITH THE KIDS Once again, the tennis camp over the holidays was a fun-filled learning experience for the 15 kids who joined us. All of them visibly improved their skills. There were loads of smiles and laughs on courts, as well. The camp really rocked with Coaches Alan, JB and Asher – kings of the kids! IN THE SWIM During the Chinese New Year holidays, aquaDucks organised two swim camps for the young Members of the Swiss Club – a ‘Learn to Swim’ camp for students between 5 and 8 years old, and a ‘Stroke & Development’ camp for older children. The main focus of the second camp was to improve the students’ form and have some active fun. Sessions started

22

at 9am with swim stroke correction and recreational activities, followed by healthy snacks of fruit. After the second session, the children could enjoy free play under the vigilant supervision of the coaches. A YEAR-ROUND CALENDAR OF CAMPS Sports camps take place year-round and are a great way for your children to socialise, stay active, master a sport and have fun. We hope to see your kids at a Swiss Club sports camp soon. See page 26 for a list of Easter camps!

Congratulations, Team ‘Rest of the World’!

T

he 2020 Davis Cup was another great success, proving once again that tennis and indeed all sports for that matter have the ability to bring people together from all over the world.

BRAVOS AND BOUQUETS A big ‘bravo’ to Thierry de Panafieu for expertly organising the Davis Cup. Once again, it was a tremendous success. And finally, on behalf of the 40XV team, I would like to applaud the Swiss Club staff for their amazing work in maintaining a positive and fun-filled atmosphere at the Club despite the renovations.

WAVING FLAGS AND MAKING FRIENDS The ‘Rest of the World’, comprising tennis-playing Members of mixed nationalities not covered by the country-specific teams, came in first. Switzerland was a strong runner-up, followed by France and Germany. Well done to all! More importantly, this was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to get together and have a great time at the Swiss Club.

any people neglect to include power movements in their daily training routine. Plyometrics, also known as jump training or plyos, are exercises in which muscles exert maximum force in short intervals of time, with the goal of increasing power. You can use them to create explosive strength!

TAKE YOUR FITNESS TO THE NEXT LEVEL Including plyometrics into your training routine will allow you to break through training plateaus and take you to the next level of your fitness journey.

Francophonie 2020 in Singapore CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS SHOW ‘GASP’ BY CIE CIRCONCENTRIQUE Date and Time: Saturday 28 March 2020, 5.30pm to 6.30pm Venue: Alliance Française de Singapour, le théâtre

Admission is free. Suitable for audiences aged 5 years and above.

C

elebrate French-speaking cultures and communities and enjoy the vibrant Swiss programme at the Francophonie Festival 2020, from 18 March to 4 April 2020. 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FRANCOPHONIE Fifty years ago, in March 1970, the first International Organisation of the Francophonie (OIF) was founded to promote the French language, cultural diversity, peace and sustainable development. Since then, francophone communities across the globe have been celebrating cultural diversity and the French language every year. With nearly two million French native speakers, Switzerland has been a full member of the OIF since 1996. In Switzerland, French is one of four national languages. It is the first language of around a quarter of the Swiss population, living mainly in the western part of the country. In the other cantons, students start learning French as a second language in primary school. Hence, French is an important part of the Swiss identity. We are delighted to present a series of events in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Francophonie, co-organised by, amongst others, Alliance Française and the Embassy of Switzerland.

Through the ingenious use of lamps and projectors, the Swiss circus troupe Cie Circoncentrique create an intimate and mysterious universe full of mesmerising rotations in ‘Gasp’. This poetic and acrobatic whirlwind will make you, well, gasp! Artists Alessandro Maida and Maxime Pythoud, Cie Circoncentrique

Each eloquently interprets the flower in its own language. Swiss artist Till Rabus will be exhibiting his piece ‘Fleurs en Plastique’.

FILM PREMIERE IN SINGAPORE: THOSE WHO WORK/CEUX QUI TRAVAILLENT Date and Time: Friday 27 March 2020, 8pm (101 minutes duration) Language: French with English subtitles Tickets: $13 for Alliance Française members, $15 for non-members Save the date for the award-winning 2018 drama ‘Ceux qui travaillent’, directed by Swiss filmmaker Antoine Russbach. Starring well-known Belgian actor Olivier Gourmet, it scored big on last year’s Swiss Film Awards (Swiss version of the Oscars), winning prizes for best film, screenplay, cinematography and supporting actor. Synopsis: Following an act of gross misconduct, Frank’s position at a maritime freight company where he had been employed for 20 years, is immediately terminated. For Frank, who has dedicated his entire life to moving up the ladder of success, admitting the reason for his dismissal to his wife and family is impossible. From working with a career coach to phases of solitary wandering, he begins a period of selfreflection that will push him to reconsider all his values.

FRANCOPHONIE DAY IN SINGAPORE – EMBASSY OF SWITZERLAND BOOTH

As part of the Francophonie 2020 in Singapore programme, the Embassy of Switzerland had initially planned a Swiss country booth with Raclette tasting (generously sponsored by Huber’s Butchery), information on the new French stream at the Swiss School and travel inspiration from Switzerland Tourism. Due to the current situation with the COVID-19 outbreak, the organising committee has decided to cancel this activity. Nonetheless, the Swiss Embassy cordially thanks Huber’s Butchery, the Swiss School and Switzerland Tourism for their generous support of the embassy. F

ollowing the successful introduction of a French Steam in 2019 with a Primary 1/2 class, the Swiss School is delighted to be adding two more classes to its French section for the next school year. The Gerbers’

Singapore Chapter

P

rior to coming to Singapore in 2012 with their now 14-year-old son Jakob, German couple Michael and Melita Gerber had been living in Switzerland for 20 years. They joined the Swiss Club two years after their arrival. EMBRACING OPPORTUNITIES Michael first came to Singapore as the Managing Partner and CEO of a globally active management consultancy firm. After selling his shares in the consulting company in 2016, he launched 360F, a product company in the wealth and insurance advisory space of which he is CEO today. All the family enjoy staying in Singapore, and they especially appreciate the weather. “You can jog in shorts here every day of the year!” remarked Michael. “And business-wise, Singapore offers good connectivity to all of Asia.” Though they miss aspects of Switzerland, such as the mountains, the four seasons, the skiing and the hiking, they return three times a year as a family, and Michael frequently travels there on business. “We have the best of both worlds. Every side of the world has its beauty,” said Michael philosophically.

FROM AQUADUCKS AT THE SWISS CLUB TO… MAYBE THE OLYMPICS! Jakob is well-known to the Club’s swimming enthusiasts. After trying out several sports at the Swiss Club, he found his forte in the pool when he started lessons with aquaDucks. Today, he is the resident swimming star of his school, and competes at a level that can be considered on a par with national or semi-professional standards. “The aquaDucks coaches gave him a lot of motivation, and ignited ‘his fire’ for swimming,” said Melita. “They are great with kids, and always make the lessons fun!” After graduating from the Swiss School, Jakob started his secondary studies at United World College, Dover campus, where there is an Olympic-sized pool. He attends swimming training for two hours every weekday, before or after school, and at 6.15am on Saturday mornings. (That’s what you call dedication!) Jakob shared that his best event is the 50m backstroke, for which his fastest timing is 29.82 seconds. Besides swimming, Jakob loves hiking with his family and checking out the latest tech toys in the shops. LOVING CLUB LIFE Melita comes to the Club for some ‘me time’ almost every weekday morning. She works out at the gym and joins many of the classes, including Pilates. “I love the tranquil setting of the Club. You are so close to Nature that you don’t

I love the tranquil setting of the Club. You are so close to Nature that you don’t feel like you’re in an actual city. I really enjoy hearing the birds chirping as I sip on my coffee! Melita Gerber feel like you’re in an actual city. I really enjoy hearing the birds chirping as I sip on my coffee!” shared Melita. Besides the swimming pools, which both father and son use, Michael plays tennis on the Club’s courts. They happily recall celebrating many birthdays at the Swiss Club, and regularly attend Singapore National Day celebrations and the epic Oktoberfest. FOOD FOR THOUGHT When we asked for dining recommendations, Melita and Jakob both promptly cited the butter chicken from the Tandoori Corner, while Michael recommended the chicken wings and Ceasar salad. Jakob shared that he also enjoys the Club Burger and the local dishes, and the steaks at Arbenz got a unanimous thumbs-up. As for us, we enjoyed our chat with the Gerbers. Thanks for sharing, Melita, Michael and Jakob!

our Marketing and Communications Manager, Riza, is a devoted dad, an all-round sportsman, a passionate fisherman and, to top it all off, a great cook.

Riza Really Can Cook! MASTER CHEF, MISTER DAD At 33 years old, Riza is already a father of three – 10-year-old Suri, 7-year-old Kenny, and 2-year-old Sarah Sofea. A half-Chinese, half-Malay Singaporean, he is married to Kristy Nguyen, a member of our F&B team who rides a hard-to-miss yellow Vespa. And Riza, we learned, loves to cook. “I’ve been told that my beef pho is one of the better ones out there. I once cooked beef pho for my Vietnamese in-laws in Hanoi,” said Riza with pride. “They were skeptical at first, but ended up going for seconds and thirds. Even the head chef of the family, my mom-in-law, secretly went for seconds!” High praise indeed. On Saturday mornings, when he’s not required at the Club, you’ll find Riza holding a fishing rod. He also plays and excels at just about every sport you can think of, from softball, badminton and tennis, to golf and soccer. LIFE BEFORE THE SWISS CLUB Prior to joining the Swiss Club, Riza has held an impressive range of events- and marketing-related roles in hospitality and healthcare. At the Swiss Club, he is

responsible for all marketing collateral and communications, the promotion of Club events, and the creation of new partnerships with vendors and external companies. (Phew, that’s quite a job scope.) LOVING HIS JOB Having joined the Club just two weeks before the annual craziness that is Oktoberfest, Riza is very grateful to his colleagues and Club Members for helping bring him up to speed. He loves being surrounded by greenery, and the fact he always get a free ride home on Kristy’s Vespa! A MESSAGE TO MEMBERS “I would like to say thank you to all the Members for their understanding while the Club is undergoing renovations,” said Riza. “Look out for more events and activities, in and out of the Club, and keep your suggestions coming.” And on behalf of the editorial team that works with Riza to put together this very magazine, we would like to say, “Thank you, Riza, for your professional courtesy, understanding and support. It’s a pleasure working with you!”

Last Word A Wonderful Trip to Pulau Semaku Dear Apple and Christine, Our thanks for a wonderful family trip to Pulau Semakau on Saturday morning. The trip was well communicated, professionally run and a credit to the Swiss Club organisation. Trips to these types of places in Singapore cannot be arranged on an individual basis and therefore it is even more beneficial that we had the opportunity to take our 9-year-old son with us to educate him on why waste management and consumerism in Singapore and the world is such an important learning opportunity. We had fun meeting other Swiss Club local and international Members and chatting about our views on recycling. Our guide commented that we are the group that asked the most questions in all his years of guiding on the Island. Swiss Club staff members also joined, giving us another chance to connect with our Swiss Club community. In future, please arrange more of these types of trips on a quarterly basis especially the facilities at the Club are under renovation. We encourage all Members to consider joining these trips as a fun family morning and a chance to see and learn something new in Singapore. With our thanks to the team involved – Bravo! Yolanda, Antonio & Sebastian Ribeiro

A Happy Host Dear Adrian and Christine, Just a quick note to let you know that you blew away the guests on Saturday! They were all super-happy, and it could not have been better. The food was fantastic, there was plenty of beer and the setting was brilliant. They have already asked to do it again... Cheers, Urs Brutsch

An Enjoyable Stay Dear Eden and colleagues,
Thank you for your mail. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Swiss Club!
