The Club is Our Playground!

A Note from the Editor Dear Members,

It’s hard to believe that this is the second issue of the year for ‘Relax’. Then again, February was a short month, punctuated with Valentine’s Day and the Lunar New Year. I hope that you celebrated at least one of these happy occasions at the Swiss Club. Every time I visit the Club, there is something new to see. The shiny bright playgrounds are beautiful, and make me wish I were a child again. I especially love the exquisite ‘stump art’, which adds an air of enchantment to the area. Not to forget the sports field, which is incredibly impressive with its cushioned artificial turf and immaculate finish. I feel sure that these improved facilities impress not only Swiss Club Members, but all who set foot on your beautiful grounds, including visitors from the Singapore Cricket Club and ONE°15. Conversely, I hope you are enjoying the freedom of choice enabled by the new reciprocal benefits with these two prestigious but distinctly different Clubs. How wonderful that one Membership lets you dine amid jungle, in town and by the sea! Enjoy this issue of ‘Relax’. It’s chock-full of new developments, including tantalising new dining promotions and new wellness and fitness classes. Did someone say choc? Happy Easter! Warmest regards,

A Word from the

Committee

While there is no doubt of the heritage and the ‘Swissness’ of the Club, which is something that needs to be preserved, the true international flavour of the Club is what attracts us and keeps us coming back.

Guten Tag, Ni Hao, Hello, Bonjour and G’day, Welcome fellow Swiss Club Members to this edition of ‘Relax’. My name is Robbie and I am one of the newly elected Committee Members. My wife Kathy, my daughters, Charlotte, Madison and Isabella joined the Club about 8 years ago. We are an Australian family who have been living in Singapore for 10 years and we find that the Club is the perfect place to spend time together and have fun. Whether it is experiencing a lazy Sunday ‘arvo’ (afternoon) by the pool with friends while enjoying a few cold beers and an early kids’ dinner, the occasional special dinner in Arbenz or working out in the gym (not often enough), the Club has always been a favourite place of ours. When we look at the breakdown of members by nationality, the Top 5 are: Swiss (23%), German (17%,), Singaporean (13%), French (12%) and British (11%). (Aussies come in at number 6 with 5%!) A truly international Club indeed. While there is no doubt of the heritage and the ‘Swissness’ of the Club, which is something that needs to be preserved, the true international flavour of the Club is what attracts us and keeps us coming back. It is what also has the potential to attract new Members. When I had the opportunity to join the Committee and help to guide, develop and build the strategy to futureproof our Club, I jumped at the chance. The entire Committee is 100% focused on improving our Club and ensuring its long-term success for generations to come. As a Committee, we want to ensure full and open transparency with all Members and we pledge to give continual updates on what the Committee and the Club Management are doing to improve the Club today, tomorrow and into the years to come.

There are two main areas I would like all Members to be aware of: Firstly, you may well know that we have engaged the services of specialised Club consultants who have concluded and presented an initial report to the Management and Committee. That report, which is based on a number of site visits and interviews with Members, Staff and Management, has made a number of recommendations. These recommendations are being looked at now but include everything from how to provide a better experience when arriving at the Club to newly designed restaurant facilities, new IT, AV and ordering systems, air conditioned cafes and many more interesting suggestions. One area of the report that is key (and has to occur since it is for Government regulatory reasons) is that we need to change the design of the Pergola, the Tandoori Corner and kitchens. To that end, the Club is currently running a rigorous proposal process to select a local architectural firm to design and manage the renovation for our Club. The proposal for the design and investment will be presented at the Club’s AGM in September, although the Committee will communicate on progress and findings along the way. As part of my Committee role, I sit on the Marketing and Membership Subcommittee. Recently, the Marketing team has been working very hard to look at options on how to engage better with Swiss currently living in Singapore and who are not yet Members. You will soon see a number of new Member drives targeting this particular audience. Please help to tell your friends! Finally, I would like to wish all those who celebrate it, a very safe and Happy Easter. Cheers,

R. Hills

A Message from the

Dear Members,

General Manager

I wish to thank all four teams that participated and took their Sunday morning off to play or help in the ‘welcome back’ social and very friendly soccer tournament on 11 February.

Hope you have had a fabulous past two months, both at and outside of the Swiss Club. It seems like only yesterday when happy ‘cowboys’ celebrated New Year’s Eve at the Rifle Lounge and the almighty Chinese Lion danced his way through the Club, ushering in the Dog and bringing prosperity, health and blessings to us all. As we gear up for the many excellent promotions and activities for March and April, I encourage you to browse through ‘Relax’, as our Swiss Club’s employees work hard to ensure there is something for everyone. Do enjoy! Reflecting on the many ‘big & small’ improvements made at the Club, I kindly ask for your help and assistance to convey this message to our junior Members and kids so we help each other to keep the Club in good shape. With the two playgrounds completed, we hope everyone is having fantastic fun! Yet we encourage adults to keep a watchful eye on play to avoid unwanted accidents. For the sake of hygiene, food and drinks are best enjoyed at our restaurants, poolside and grassy areas, and leftovers and trash placed in the waste bins. Many favourable comments have been received on the new recycled paper takeaway boxes and cups vs. the plastic ones. Thank you for that. In the quest to be more environmentally friendly, we also ask for your help to dispose of these containers when finished, as litter is unappealing, whether it’s made from paper or plastic! Whether you play football, touch-rugby or simply like the feel of the newly refurbished soccer pitch, we appeal to all Members to take care of this facility, so it can last for years to come. We have, in the past, observed ‘scooters’ and bicycles being ridden there, and that is simply not

acceptable. Neither should the goals be moved or dragged around, as it damages the turf. The Club has invested a considerable amount of money, so let’s take care of the Club property. On a lighter note, I wish to thank all four teams that participated and took their Sunday morning off to play or help in the ‘welcome back’ social and very friendly soccer tournament on 11 February. It was won by the Club’s Social Tuesday Team ‘The German All Stars’. Congratulations to the team. A sincere thank you goes to Haresh Kumar, our appointed Sports Manager, for his dedication to this project, as well as our main contractor Kohup Sports and our time-lapse videographer Eric Eng, for ensuring we can all enjoy this project on the Swiss Club website in months to come. Talking about football, the Club will be hosting the Swiss Club ‘World Cup’ in conjunction with the televised FIFA World Cup and our Summer Membership programme. We are looking for participating players and teams for what no doubt will become an International Culinary, Cultural and Friendship Football Fair. Contact us on membership@swissclub.org.sg for more details. Last but not least, mark your calendars for the Party of the Year – this year’s Swiss Club Oktoberfest 2018 will be held on 26-30 September. Happy Easter and see you at the Club! Warmest regards, Carsten Kjeldmann General Manager carsten.kjeldmann@swissclub.org.sg “Swiss Club, the Home for All Nationalities”

The Mighty Lion Welcomes the Loyal Dog In keeping with tradition, the Swiss Club staged a spectacular lion dance to usher in the Year of the Dog, on 25 February. NOISE, POISE AND BLESSINGS Kicking off at 10.30am, the internationally acclaimed and highly skilled Wen Yang Lion Dance Troupe commenced its noisy procession at the Guesthouse lobby, then pranced and danced and drummed its way to Level 2 of the Guesthouse. It proceeded to grace the new playground, the Jungle Bar, Pergola, including the kitchen, Arbenz, the Rifle lounge and the Management offices. The pomp and pageantry included a spectacular ‘3 War Drums’ performance and the familiar Chai Qing ceremony, whereby the frisky lion plucks the auspicious greens to bestow blessings on the premises and its occupants.

13 MORE ACTION WITH MUAY THAI After the lion dance, all present were invited to witness an equally skillful and energetic muay thai demonstration by Island Wellness, which took place on the giant chess board. It completed a perfect day of oriental arts, sports and traditions.

A SELLOUT SUCCESS The Chinese Reunion Dinner on 15 February at Arbenz was fully booked in the week prior to the joyous occasion, with 62 pax tucking into an abundant feast of auspicious and delicious dishes. Our staff members Yusri, Kamil and Su presided over the preparation of the yu sheng salad of raw fish and auspicious ingredients, complete with the recitation of the traditional sayings that accompany the addition of each symbolic ingredient.

An Evening to Remember

The weather was perfect, the music was just right, and the food was superb. Valentine’s Day dinner at the Swiss Club checked all the boxes, and then some. NO PRETTIER PLACE TO BE Testimony to the success of last year’s event, several couples came with fond memories of last year’s event, and high expectations of this one. They were not disappointed. In total, 11 couples and a table of 14 enjoyed an evening of wonderful food and live music. The tables were set around our elegantly upgraded pool, against the backdrop of the mysterious jungle. Notes of sweet

guitar and smouldering saxophone drifted through the balmy evening year, mingling with the tinkling of glasses and lively conversation. A FOOD LOVER’S FEAST The feast began with a shared platter of slow-cooked octopus, ginger, beetroot, celery puree scallop carpaccio, soy truffle dressing, caviar and uni… and concluded with an exquisite strawberry dessert. A second entrée comprised a delicate crab macaron and

avocado mousse, followed by succulent slices of whole angus prime rib, sauce béarnaise and peppercorn with dark chocolate infused jus, served from the carving trolley and accompanied by potato truffle gratin and assorted baby vegetables. Suffice to say that many compliments were conveyed to the chef. SURPRISES AND PRIZES To top it all off, three lucky couples took home prizes – two pairs of tickets to the musical Evita. Congratulations to May Cotting and Guyu Shyr, who each won a pair of tickets to the musical extravaganza Evita, and to Fabian Grone, who won the luxury travel prize of a 3D2N stay at Temptation Angkor. Thanks to all who wined and dined with their Valentines at the Swiss Club – it is without a doubt one of the most romantic settings in all of Singapore.

The Swiss Club Welcomes the

Vienna Boys’ Choir

photos courtesy of www.lukasbeck.com

As the Official Club of the recent ‘See Sing Study and Socialise’ 5-day visit from the world-renowned Vienna Boys’ Choir, from 11 to 15 January 2018, the Swiss Club was delighted to host the boys for a friendly football match on 14 January. The finale performance on 15 January was a tour de force of organisational prowess, bringing together the voices of Vienna Boys’ Choir together with the choirs of eight local choirs under the banner of kids’ philharmonic@sg.

A FUN DAY OUT The day out at the Swiss Club was a delight for the boys and all involved. They played against boys from Dulwich College, Singapore. As you could tell from the happy and relaxed smiles on the boys’ faces, it was a welcome break from the rigorous rehearsals and performances that a place in the choir demands. A MUSICAL MISSION Anyone who had the pleasure of attending one of the Choir’s performances at the Esplanade will attest to the sublime experience of appreciating their music performed live in a state-of-the-art concert hall. Led by the exuberant, young maestro Luiz de Godoy, their highly trained and innately sweet young voices were in divine harmony. The mixed ethnicities of the faces were a heartening show of diversity and inclusiveness.

In addition to live performances, the Choirs’ schedule included dialogue sessions with teachers and conductors and masterclass workshops with budding young local musicians. The overwhelming response confirms the truth in the saying that music is a language that transcends all others.

ABOUT THE VIENNA BOYS’ CHOIR The Choir is over 500 years old and boasts past affiliates such as Mozart, Schubert, Bruckner and Haydn. It is one of the world’s most travelled professional performing children’s arts groups. Every year, it performs to over 300,000 people in over 300 concerts around the world.

Despite the rain, the beginning of the year has been busy on the tennis courts, with two intensive and fun ladies’ camps already held.

HARD-HITTING TRAINING The aim of the ladies’ camps is to help Swiss Club teams prepare for their league matches. As you read these lines, they ladies are giving their all to proudly fly the Swiss Club flag throughout Singapore. Good luck, ladies!

Here are the results: 8 & Under Winner Henry Grieb Runner-up Liesel Rigby 10 & Under Winner Mathieu Tassilly Runner-up Adrien Hakime

The men are also representing Swiss Club in interclub leagues. I am confident that this year they can reach the semifinal! DAVIS CUP COMEBACK In February, the racquet committee, led by Thierry De Panafieu, brought back the Davis Cup event at the Swiss Club. It was a resounding success – and the mixing of padel, tennis, women’s and men’s players made the event all the more compelling. At the end of the weekend, the four competing teams attained the following ranking: 1. Switzerland 2. France 3. Rest of the World (ROTW) 4. Germany Congratulations, guys! JUBILANT JUNIORS In January, we held the first Juniors’ tournament of the year. The level of the kids has swiftly risen, and credit should be given to the commitment and focus of the young players. The first day of the tournament was a washout due to heavy rain, so the second day was very busy and the kids bravely played on, match after match.

SWISS TRIUMPH Team Switzerland is the champion of the 2018 Davis Cup! Fun was the winning formula and name of the game.

Team Germany

Team Switzerland

FRIENDS THAT PLAY TOGETHER, WIN TOGETHER The Swiss triumphed over France, Germany, and the Rest of the World (ROTW), in the return of the Swiss Club’s highly anticipated 2-day event. The underdogs of the tournament, the Swiss team beat France 3-2 in the finals to clinch the title. Team Captain Stefan Rothlin, who literally jumped for joy, said their goal for the competition was strictly to have fun. And fun they had! After a 5-year hiatus, the Swiss Club’s 2018 Davis Cup was a smashing success. Graced with excellent sunny weather, all participants agreed they had a really good time together. There was no better feeling than having different nations mingle in the spirit of sportsmanship under one roof. The last Swiss Club Davis Cup was in 2013, when Germany won the title.

Despite missing out on the trophy, the other teams made their home countries proud. Team France, led by captain Pierre Lorinet, came in second. Team ROTW, led by captain Matt Sib, came in third. Plagued by injuries and illness, however, Team Germany led by captain Rudi Prenzlin, came in fourth. All three teams vow revenge next year.

This has been one of the best weeks as a team. We really had a good time together. Roger Federer

Turn Back Time at the Gym

Despite the common complaints that gym-going is ‘boring’ and ‘tedious’, resistance training at a gym can take you back to the body confidence of your youth. GYM STRATEGY Training in the gym is more than using a treadmill or the bike. The biggest potential benefit of gym training sessions is the engaging of your muscles via resistance training. What is resistance training? Simply put, movements that cause your muscles to contract against an external force or your body weight. The benefits of doing this are numerous and far-reaching. It increases your muscle mass,

prevents premature ageing, fights against muscle atrophy (loss of muscle mass) and improves your posture. Yes, resistance training is anti-ageing. ANTI-AGEING BENEFITS The inclusion of flexibility and agility drills will train your mind to teach your body to react faster and restore the confidence you had in your youth. Furthermore, expert guidance will allow you enjoy the full benefits of exercising in a safe and effective way.

The Club is Our

Playground! Our two new playgrounds have finally been unveiled. Sporting sunshiny-bright primary colours, they offer vibrant settings for play and fun-filled learning.

Triangular Fun

THE SERIOUS BENEFITS OF PLAY Playgrounds have a positive impact on children’s learning and development. In fact, outdoor play areas provide children with rich opportunities to grow, learn, and develop. Swiss Club believes in ‘Play’, which allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive and emotional strength. In particular, time spent outdoors gives kids a beneficial blast of Vitamin D, which plays a crucial role in the development of healthy bones. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that children who spend time outdoors are less likely to develop myopia (near-sightedness) than their indoor-bound contemporaries. The fact that Singapore has one of the highest rates of childhood myopia in the world is all the more reason to urge your kids to ‘take it outside’.

‘PLAY’ PAVED THE WAY With ‘Play’ as the guiding principle for the facelift project of our playgrounds, the Club undertook the completion of the small and large playgrounds in two phases over a four-month period. From all reports, the results have been given two thumbs-up (not and many ‘legs-up)’ by their young users. At almost any time of the day, our Members’ children can be seen scampering up and down, squirrel-like and monkey-like, over the equipment. Parents, take a moment to take some snapshots (even if they’re only mental ones). You might even like to consider holding a children’s party by one of our playgrounds? Talk to Paulina or Haresh if you’re keen. All that remains to be said is – get outside and play!

A Family of Great Sports:

The Swiss Family Aschwanden Since joining in 2009, Aileen and Michael Aschwanden and their son Lucas have been constantly active in the sporting and social life of the Club. We caught them off-court for a chat. CITIZENS OF THE WORLD The Aschwandens are a truly international family. Michael is Swiss, Aileen is Singaporean, and Lucas was born in Hong Kong. In 2008, when Lucas was two, they moved to Singapore in search of cleaner air and a more family-friendly environment. Michael currently works at LGT Bank, and Aileen, a former news producer with CNBC in Hong Kong, is now a ‘stay-at-home mum’. (We use the term loosely, since Aileen devotes copious amounts of time and energy to the Jass Club and the Racket Committee.) A SECOND HOME AT THE CLUB When asked what the Swiss Club meant to her family, Aileen was generous with her praise. “The Swiss Club is definitely second home to us. The veteran staff have seen Lucas grow up, and we are all on a first-name basis,” shared Aileen. “On days when I’m unable to pick Lucas up from school on time, I know he will be safe and well taken care of, just sitting at the Pergola doing his homework while waiting for me.”

The Swiss Club is definitely second home to us. The veteran staff have seen Lucas grow up, and we are all on a first-name basis. Aileen Aschwanden

The family also appreciates the multitude of facilities and activities at the Club, from the pool and playground to the tennis and padel courts on which all are familiar figures. Lucas trains four times a week under Coach Pierre, Michael plays padel and Aileen takes tennis lessons for fun and fitness. She also serves on the Racket Committee and oversees junior tennis development. Not surprisingly, sports set the scene for many precious family memories. Michael cherishes the memory

of Lucas learning to swim at the Club, while Lucas vividly recalls the first time he won a tennis match and tournament. EMBRACING CONSTANTS AND CHANGES While the Aschwandens love the familiarity of the staff and the feeling of ‘coming home’ that envelops them every time they come to the Club, they are also looking forward to the changes to come. In particular, the new, enclosed Pergola and upgrades to the sporting facilities are eagerly anticipated. When it comes to food, Aileen loves the Asian dishes, and in fact everything and anything that Chef Jackie cooks. Michael especially enjoys the Chicken Tikka from the Tandoori Corner, and Lucas loves the Lamb Kebab. RELAX AND GET ACTIVE! For their fellow Members, the Aschwanden menfolk have these contrasting yet not conflicting words of advice. “Relax – have a glass of wine or beer!” suggested Michael. “Try all the different facilities at the Club!” suggested Lucas. We say, why not do both! Thanks go to the family Aschwanden for this interview, and for all of their valued contributions to the Club.

A Brunner Family Tradition

It has the most beautiful surroundings of all the Clubs in Singapore, and it is also a family Club with a very long and impressive history. Daniel Brunner

grand-grand-uncle was a Member almost a century ago, in the 1920s. You can call it a family tradition. Daniel and Jane continue to enjoy the ambience and service at the Club, and appreciate the convenience of accommodating visiting parents, friends and relatives at The Guesthouse. They particularly enjoy the Club’s restaurants, frequenting Pergola for dinner on Sunday evenings and Arbenz for special occasions. They also plan to use the tennis facilities in the near future, and are considering taking up golf again.

Members since August 2016, Daniel and Jane Brunner, together with their 8-year-old son Yves, follow in the footsteps of Daniels grand-granduncle who was a Member in the 1920s. A SWISS FAMILY IN SINGAPORE Daniel, Jane and Yves Brunner are Swiss citizens. Daniel and his son Yves were both born in Zurich, while Jane was born in Manila and came to Switzerland in 1994 for work, after which she worked in Dubai for a number of years. After almost 23 years in the banking industry with a large Swiss global bank, Daniel moved to Singapore to join an independent asset manager as its Senior Advisor. Jane has worked in marketing and sales positions for a stellar lineup of beauty brands, and was once a makeup artist for Anna Sui’s Japanese products and Yves Saint Laurent Paris. She has also worked for Osswald, one of the oldest perfumeries in Zurich. Today, she focuses on taking care of Yves, who attends the Swiss School in Singapore.

In addition, the whole family is looking forward to the completion of the upgrading projects, which they see as a valuable investment in the future of the Club. ON SINGAPORE Daniel and Jane have embraced Singapore and were generous in their praise of the nation’s success story. “It is a hard-working and well-organised nation of different cultures and languages, living peacefully together, with common goals for the good of the society and the country. The openness and hospitality towards foreigners contributing to this success is admirable,” shared Daniel. “It is certainly fair to say that Singapore is indeed the Switzerland of Asia.”

OCEAN MAPPING EXPEDITION From 12 to 26 March 2018, the Swiss sailboat Fleur de Passion – a 33 meter-long ketch and currently the biggest boat sailing under the Swiss flag – will stop in Singapore as part of The Ocean Mapping Expedition. This 4-year journey around the world combines projects of science, education and culture. Run by the Geneva-based non-profit organisation Fondation Pacifique, it left Seville in April 2015 and is scheduled to be back in Spain in August 2019. The aim of this unique project is to contribute to a better understanding of the human impact on the oceans through activities such as noise and micro plastic pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and coral bleaching, and to raise awareness of sustainable development issues. Coming from the Philippines, Brunei and Kuching, before heading for Jakarta, Fleur de Passion will be accessible in Singapore for free public visits over two weeks. The programme and further details are available on www.omexpedition.ch and www.facebook.com/omexpedition/.

NEWS FROM THE

Students Take Charge and Implement Change Who says that young people cannot make a difference? This past autumn, the Primary 5 class from the Swiss School in Singapore challenged this notion with some remarkable results. STUDY OF HEALTHY LIVING It all started when the students were engaged in a discussion about healthy meals during a science lesson that focused on healthy living. In the course of debating what constitutes a healthy and green lifestyle, the conversation turned to how they view the ‘Mittagstisch’ service at the Swiss School. To further understand the situation in other schools, the students then watched short clips about the lunch services in France and in Louisiana, USA. This prompted the students to ponder over the possibility of making a positive change. In their English class during the following week, students continued the debate and went on to discuss in more detail what types of changes could be made and the best way to implement them. They developed suggestions for potential menu changes and the use of more environmentally friendly materials, and discussed logistics issues and general improvements that could potentially benefit both their peers and the environment. MARKET RESEARCH The students went to great lengths and even conducted surveys among their peers and the staff to gauge the stakeholders’ responses to the proposed changes. From the

information obtained, the students finessed their proposals and pitched them to the Swiss School management. FROM IDEAS TO IMPLEMENTATION The students received rave reviews for the professionalism and maturity they showed in the course of their pro-active campaign. Furthermore, their efforts resulted in some immediate changes. For example, the Primary 5 students now drink from washable plastic cups instead of disposable ones. In addition, the younger students now use plastic utensils in place of the larger, metal ones. Finally, the students met with Mr Adrian Vogt, the Executive Chef at the Swiss Club, to discuss potential meal changes. Again, the students showed a great deal of maturity in this matter and were able to present some potential changes that would be warmly accepted by the student body. Mr Vogt was very gracious and generous with his time and took their ideas seriously. From a simple discussion in class to an excellent example of teamwork, the Primary 5 students at the Swiss School should be extremely proud of their work and the changes they have helped implement. It goes to show that no matter what age, people can make positive changes in their daily life if they work with the right attitude. You are very lucky to have such a lovely Club, and we would like to visit you again when we are next back in Singapore – in early 2019. Assuming, of course, that you will have us! Regards, Ros & John Bishop MUCH TO LOVE ABOUT BRUNCH Dear Paulina, Thank you so much – Eric had a wonderful time at his Birthday Brunch last Sunday! We very much appreciated the Birthday Cake as well as the table decoration and flowers – black and white chic colonial style. We liked this formula with starters and deserts buffet and a choice of two menus served at our table. Even a vegetarian option for our guest was available. The service was perfect, as we could all start to eat the main at the same time. We will definitely have more celebrations at the Sunday Brunch in the future. Many thanks, Celine
