Swiss School in Singapore Launches French Stream
A Winning Experience for Gold Card Members
A Note from the Editor Dear Members, It has been an eventful couple of months since our last issue of Relax. The launch of the Loyalty Card Programme, combined with welcome drinks for new Members, saw many joyous reunions among our longest-standing Members. A free flow of gin and tonics by home-grown Tanglin Gin proved to be the perfect refreshments for a balmy tropical evening. Then came Easter Brunch. Countless chocolate eggs were broken along with attendance records. It was ‘full house’ upstairs and downstairs at Arbenz and Pergola, and a great day was had by all. Last but not least, our Gold Card Members’ Appreciation Night at the Turf Club was a big hit. All present were both enthralled and thrilled by the spectacle of live horse racing, and many went home moderately ‘richer’ than when they came. And that’s just a taste of things to come. The second Summerfest is just around the corner, Mother’s and Father’s Day Brunches are coming, and then there’s Swiss National Day. Do not be fazed by the upcoming renovations – your Management has planned it like clockwork, and you can rest assured that disruptions will be minimised. Meanwhile, we’ll continue to keep you informed as your Club is transformed. Yours,

A Word from the
Committee
“
In my opinion, the F&B offerings at Pergola are quite exciting. The special promotions change every fortnight and many of the new items on the permanent menu are winners. Do give them a try.
Dear Members and Friends of the Swiss Club, As a new Member of the Committee and of the Sports Sub-committee, it is my pleasure to update you on the latest news with regards to the sports offerings of the Club and other matters.
Court 1: 9am-7pm, Monday to Friday; 6am-3pm every Saturday, 6am-2pm every Sunday
Gym-goers will be excited to hear that some of our older pieces of cardio equipment have just been replaced with brand new machines. Two Precor Treadmills, two Precor Elliptical with Adj Crossramp and two Precor Upright Bikes (all 2018 models) are waiting for you to be used. Feel free to ask our fitness instructors, Jason and Timothy, to advise you on their usage. Better still, why not try out the personal training classes offered by our expert instructors from ActiveFitness? I have been a regular at the personal training class and greatly enjoy Jason’s professional instruction and guidance.
Court 5: 6am-11pm Monday to Friday; 6am-3pm every Saturday
We are also happy to announce that in response to Members’ feedback, a new outdoor fitness area has been set up, equipped with vertical bars, dips station and sit-up boards. This area is located opposite the Playground and en route to the Pavilion, while the table tennis has been relocated near to the tennis court area. We will also use this new area for conducting our boot camps, which are organised by ActiveFitness. Tennis continues to be one of the Club’s core sports offerings, thanks largely to the efforts of Pierre Capdeville and his team of coaches from 40XV. As you learned in the last issue of Relax, we now have a new padel coach, Alan Douglas. We are working with 40XV to build up the padel offerings for Club Members as well as external members in the coming months. As some of you might know, the Swiss Club currently has the only outdoor padel court in Singapore. At the recent Racquet Committee meeting, we were reminded that the condition of the tennis courts is deteriorating faster than expected, which could be due in part to the use of improper shoes on the courts. Please remember to wear only proper tennis shoes when playing. On a related note, please respect the rules of our tennis court booking system. Please note that the Club and 40XV have an agreement whereby three of the five tennis courts are reserved for coaching classes during the following times.
Court 4: 6am-10pm, Monday to Friday; 12pm-3pm every Saturday, 6am-2pm every Sunday
Another sport that is popular among some of our long-time Members is the mountain/street biking. I recently had lunch with two keen bikers, who shared the group’s activities and successes in Singapore and abroad. They encourage new Members to join their activities, which normally take place on Saturdays. If you are interested in biking, please get in touch with Michael Winter at MichaelWinter@AshmoreGroup.com or Steve Knabl at steve.knabl@swissasia-group.com. We are also exploring the possibility of offering some guided bike tours for Members. Look out for more details in future issues of Relax. Apart from sport, the big topic that is keeping the Committee members busy at the moment is the renovation of the Pergola/Jungle Bar/Swimming Pool. We are currently still in negotiations with the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) to firm up the final details, and eagerly await the official approval. Firstly, the Leisure Swimming Pool will receive a cosmetic renovation that is expected to start in June this year. Next will be the Jungle Bar, followed by the Pergola. A detailed schedule will be communicated to Members once the government approvals have been obtained. In my opinion, the F&B offerings at Pergola are quite exciting. The special promotions change every fortnight and many of the new items on the permanent menu are winners. Do give them a try. As always, if you have any questions, proposals or comments, please feel free to approach the responsible Committee Member. Wishing all of you a relaxing time at our wonderful Club. Yours sincerely,
A. Luedi

A Message from the
General Manager Dear Members,
“
Firstly, thank you for your invaluable support during the last few months. Your patience during this interim stage of transformation, on so many levels from the renovations to the changes of Management, is greatly appreciated. And your enthusiastic participation in the Club’s many offerings is incredibly rewarding, for all involved. On the subject of participation, sincere thanks to everyone who joined our Easter Brunch. It was a highly successful event, drawing a ‘full house’ at both of our restaurants and making it the best attended Easter Brunch of the last four years. The day was full of fantastic food and meaningful moments – not to mention chocolate. It was everything an Easter Brunch should be. Likewise, a big thank you to everyone who attended our third Pool Party on Sunday 5 May. It was a fitting farewell for our leisure pool before it closes for renovations in June. The non-stop ripples of laughter confirmed that buckets of fun were had by all. As I write this message, another epic Summerfest is on the horizon. Remember to save the date of Saturday 1 June. Those of you who attended last year’s inaugural event will recall that it was a wonderful day. The crowd favourites including the flea market, the bouncy castle, the dunking booth, the stage performances and of course the food and drink stalls will all return. Next comes the ‘big one’ – our 20th Oktoberfest. From 11 to 15 September 2019, the Club will stage the biggest, booziest Bavarian party in all of
Another epic Summerfest is on the horizon. Remember to save the date of Saturday 1 June.
Singapore, and possibly all of Southeast Asia. Since this year marks a major milestone for us, we have lined up some special treats for revellers. Once again, our tent will rock to the big brass sound of the Musikkapelle Partenkirchen, a gregarious gang of brilliant performers who have come all the way from Munich to grace our Oktoberfest for the past 19 years. Work up a thirst for our special limited edition Erdinger lager and Oktoberfest brew. There will be a troupe of German dancing girls who will put you in the mood to break out your best moves. And brace yourself for a very exciting blast from the past in the form of a flamboyant gentleman entertainer with an 80s moustache and prominent teeth… Can you guess who? Wait and see! A word of recommendation – do try the delicate dishes on the menu for our White Asparagus Promotion all through May at Pergola and Arbenz. They are truly stellar. See you at the Club! Yours sincerely,
A. Lim

Pale straw. The bouquet of this fresh, fruitdriven Chardonnay displays honeydew melon, pear, and citrus characters with underlying hints of loquats and hay. Oak is merely a bystander, yet its subtle influence adds another layer to the fruit aromas. The palate is medium bodied offering gala apples and stone fruits with a delicate creamy texture derived from lees stirring. A bright refreshing wine; crisp and dry, with a lingering fruit finish.
Deep red with ruby hues. The wine exhibits vibrant, characteristic aromas of ripe blackcurrants, blueberries and dark plums meshed with hints of spicy, toasty oak. The generous palate is packed full of juicy fruits of the forest, cassis and chocolate characters. Medium to full-bodied, the fleshy fruits are supported by moreish, supple tannins. A balanced wine, with a persistent fruit finish.

E V E N T S
Old Friends, New Friends, Great Times On Friday 15 March, the Rifle Lounge was filled to the rafters with our valued veteran Members, Swiss Club Management, staff and convenors, and a smattering of our newest Members. The occasion was the launch of the Swiss Club Loyalty Programme, combined with a welcome reception and networking session for our new Members. MEET AND GREET, SHORT AND SWEET By 7.30pm, the laughter and lively conversation of approximately 40 veteran Members and around 20 new Members could be heard from outside the Clubhouse. Perhaps it had something to do with it being a Friday, but there was a distinctly celebratory feeling in the air. Something told us it was going to be a very successful evening.
IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER… We were delighted to meet Pierre Moccand, who recited the exact date on which he’d joined the Swiss Club, namely 21 May 1959, along with his Membership number – M2. At the time, he reckons there were only 70 Members. When we asked Pierre what he loved, and continues to love, about the Swiss Club, he replied without hesitation, “The setting, the ambience and the food. And in the old days, the shooting range and swimming in the old pool, which was fed by a freshwater spring.”
At around 8pm, our Acting General Manager Aaron Lim gave a short and sweet welcome speech. We learned that the Loyalty Card Programme is a firstof-its-kind initiative by the Club to reward Members of 25 or more years. A warm welcome was extended to our cherished older Members as well as a handful of our recently joined new ones. OH, THE STORIES! The evening represented a rare opportunity to talk to some of the original Members of the Swiss Club. We learned that among our veteran Members are a stellar lineup of pioneers and change makers across a broad spectrum of industries, from the legal profession to the aerospace sector. Yet despite their accomplishments, everyone we spoke to was disarmingly humble. Though their stories of the early days of the Swiss Club could fill a book, time permitted us to hear only fragments of them.
Chandran and Antoinette Arul joined the Swiss Club in 1968. Chandran reflected, “I used to come for the food. And many years later, I still come for the food!” he said with a chuckle. “The grandchildren love it,” he added.
E V E N T S
A youthful-looking 78-year-old, Patrick Garez joined the Swiss Club in 1976 with his late French wife and young family. Accompanied by his current partner Annig and strapping adult son Florent, Patrick recalled, “At the time, we had three young children, and the Club was very child-friendly.” A familiar figure at the Club, Ernst Huber joined in 1980. “When I joined, there were only 300 or so Members. I love the unique location and the family atmosphere. I still come with my whole family, including my grandchildren. We are very lucky to have this Club,” reflected Ernst. Patrick and Anne Huchet joined the Swiss Club in 1986. Patrick recalled that while he’d done his homework before committing to the Swiss Club, it was the Club’s stunning natural setting that clinched his decision. “I remember the first time I had dinner at Arbenz – I was surrounded by jungle. I loved the environment!”
Michel and Jill Boschung, who attended the event with their daughter Nina. Jill shared, “We love many things, but especially the tennis. I’ve been playing with some of the older Members for so long now!” Jill, incidentally, is also the Club’s mahjong convenor. TIMES CHANGE BUT THE REASONS FOR JOINING REMAIN When we spoke to some of the new Members, what struck us was how similar their reasons for joining were to the old Members’ reasons for joining over two decades earlier. Natural setting, food, familymindedness, ambience and tennis were reasons repeatedly cited by Members old and new.
Sasha and Andrew Mirnitt, a South African couple who joined in January 2019, cited the spacious premises as the Club’s strongest drawcard. “I love the space. It’s all about the space!” said Sasha. Another couple, Danish couple Cathrine Baek and Kim Jensen, Members since
October 2018, cited the sports facilities as their reason for joining. When Cathrine arrived in Singapore from Switzerland last August, she commenced her search for a Club on behalf of her family. She’d visited every other private Club and deduced that the tennis scene at the Swiss Club was the best of all. “I play with the Club’s WITS team. It’s so nice to play on home turf!” said Cathrine. TOASTING OLD FRIENDS AND NEW FRIENDS WITH OLD WORLD NEW GIN A hot spot at the event was a popup bar by Tanglin Gin, Singapore’s first home-grown gin distillery. Tanglin Gin’s co-founder Charlie van Eeden kept the delightfully refreshing G&Ts coming with a choice of Tanglin Gin’s signature Orchid Gin or the devilishly good new Mandarin Chilli limited edition gin, paired with traditional tonic water or Folkington’s gently sparkling dry ginger ale. As always, Chef Adrian and the team kept hunger pangs at bay with a delicious spread of canapes and raclette. All in all, it was a wonderful evening. Though there were plenty of nostalgic trips down memory lane, it struck us that every person in the room was fully present – the genuine laughter, the warm smiles and the firm handshakes confirmed it.

70 Best Easter 1Guests Brunch Ever It was ‘full house’ in both Pergola and Arbenz on Easter Sunday 21 April. With 170 diners of all ages gathered for the legendary Easter Brunch and fun-filled activities.
Record Breaking Attendance
ARTS, CRAFTS AND EATS Upon the commencement of brunch at 11am, a host of hands-on activities for the little ones kicked off. Proud and indulgent parents ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed’ over an endless parade of colourful Easter décor items, pretty little Easter baskets and wearable bunny ears, all proudly produced by the young artists. While the children were occupied with their arts and crafts, the adults got to indulge at their leisure in a veritable feast of freshly baked breads and breakfast items, sumptuous fresh seafood, pasta, roast meats and a myriad marvellous desserts. The majority of the diners opted for the free-flow beverages, which put everyone in a merry mood and kept the conversation as light and bubbly as the champagne. AN EGGSELLENT HUNT The kids were captivated by an epic Easter egg hunt that involved tracking down 400 eggs hidden to varying degrees of concealment around the Club, including one highly coveted Golden Egg. The two hunters with the biggest haul of
eggs were Theodor Klingenberg and Lucy Thomas. The winner of the Golden Egg Hunt was young Robin Rothlin, who located the Golden Egg near the gym. IN PRAISE OF THE DAY As you can see from the photographic evidence, a great time was had by all. Here is a sampler of the generous feedback from Members and their guests.
“
You get 5-star service with a resort ambience. Salil Palliyil
“We chose to celebrate Easter at the Swiss Club because of its great spread of international cuisines. It’s very comfortable here, especially for the kids. You get 5-star service with a resort ambience. In fact, we just came back from our holiday yesterday – and today we feel like we’re on holiday again!” said Salil Palliyil. “It’s always fun for the whole family at the Swiss Club. The kids can run around and there are plenty of activities just for them. It’s formal, but not too formal – just the right degree of formality. And the food is amazing!” said Benno and Wiebke Klingenberg-Timm.
“
We’ll definitely be back again next year. Nikki Weber
“We love the roast meats and the desserts were delicious. We’ll definitely be back again next year if we’re in town,” said Nikki Weber. “We’ve been celebrating Easter at the Swiss Club for 10 years now,” said one of Peter Pfister’s party of friends. “It’s a nice environment, the food is good – and the kids love the playground!” said Nicole Groene.
“The staff are friendly and attentive – and the food is excellent,” said Joerg and Alejandra Blickensdorfer. And we say – well done to all involved in pulling off the feat of organisation that culminated in the most successful Easter Brunch in recent years. Not to forget a big ‘thank you’ to all the Members who supported it. A TASTE OF THINGS TO COME Now Easter’s done and dusted, don’t forget to book your table for Mother’s Day Brunch and Father’s Day Brunch. They are just around the corner.

A Winning Experience for
Gold C This year, the Swiss Club broke with convention and treated our esteemed Gold Card Members to a night out at the Singapore Turf Club on Friday 26 April.

A NOVEL NIGHT Despite a day of unrelenting rain, a respectable turnout gathered at the Turf Club at 7pm. They were greeted by a lovely lady ‘wearing’ a skirt laden with glasses of red and white wine. That was the first of a string of pleasant surprises and novel experiences the evening had in store. ROOM WITH A VIEW Dinner was served in a spacious private room overlooking the track. A viewing gallery, comprising a glassed-in balcony, offered a stunning view of the track and the races. The enticing buffet spread included Roast Beef with Mustard Sauce, Roast Lamb with Italian Sesame Sauce, Baked Salmon with Lemon Butter Cream Sauce, a DIY salad bar and local favourites including Laksa, Kueh Pie Tee and Satays. Desserts included Mango Pudding and Chocolate Mousse. An hour or so into dinner, our Acting General

Card Members Manager gave a short informal speech thanking all present for their attendance and ongoing support of the Swiss Club. He also presented the Early Bird Lucky Draw prizes. Our former Club President and his wife, Martin and Sabine Silberstein, took home a pair of tickets to see the world-renowned mentalists The Clairvoyants at Resorts World Sentosa. SPORT OF KINGS, DECODED Our sporting Gold Card Members received a crash course in the ‘sport of kings’ courtesy of a Turf Club employee who explained the fundamentals in layman’s terms. We learned the differences between betting on a ‘horse’ and betting on a ‘place’, and between ‘forecast’ bets and ‘quartet’ bets. The audience learned fast, and almost everyone had a flutter. Nobody left with a forlorn face or an empty pocket (to the best of our knowledge).
Long-term Member Birgit Shoppe voiced the sentiments of the group when she said, “I’m really enjoying this evening. I’m been in Singapore 20 years and this is the first time I’ve been to the Turf Club!”
“
I’m been in Singapore 20 years and this is the first time I’ve been to the Turf Club! Birgit Shoppe
INSIDERS’ INTEL A highlight of the evening was a privileged tour of the Parade Ring, during which the group observed the pre-race interactions between owners, trainers and jockeys as the horses cantered around the ring. You could almost feel the coiled energy of the magnificent creatures as they were reined in by their diminutive jockeys, who sat astride their rides in splendid silks.
When asked for his feedback on the evening, Siddharth Jatia enthusiastically replied, “Fantastic! I enjoyed beginner’s luck and won my very first bet!” he said.
OVERJOYED, OVERHEARD As the night wore on, the excitement built as educated guesses and lucky random picks paid off for Members.
So, did everyone have a good time? You bet they did!
Likewise, when asked if she was enjoying the evening, Sabine Silberstein promptly replied, “Yes – having fun!”

Spring Sports Camps Our loyal convenors and partners organised a series of well-attended sports camps for kids over the springtime Easter break. Here’s a rundown.
KICKIN’ FOO TBALL CAMPS
CUFA conducted three Easter Football Camps – two in the indoor sports hall and one at the outdoor football pitch. In total, more than 40 players born between 2008 and 2015 participated. The five-day camp, from 9am to midday daily, with a break for refreshments at Pergola restaurant, was a great opportunity for the children to unwind, make new friends and learn football skills. The coaches to players ratio at CUFA was 1:3 at the Easter camp, which allowed for personalised attention to every player.

SPLASHIN’ SWIMMING CAMPS During the spring break, aquaDucks organised Swim Camps for children aged 4-16 years with different swimming abilities. The goal during this camp was to make all kids water-safe, develop their confidence in the water and improve their overall skills and swimming techniques. The camps were a great success and we are looking forward to seeing the children again in the swim camps during the summer break.
SMASHIN’ TENNIS CAMPS
Our ever-popular tennis partner 40XV organised a series of Tennis Camps over the Easter break. As always, they were great fun and a memorable experience for the kids, with smiles and laughs galore on the courts.

New and Improved Padel Court With a new net and a new glass panel, the padel court is feeling fresh and looking good. With a new batch of sand on the way, enthusiasts will soon be enjoying the sliding effect of a traditional court.
GET RATED Over the next couple of months, every padel player will have a chance to obtain an official rating from the Padel Coach, which can be used for both friendly and competitive play. We will use the (FIP) International Padel Federation as our benchmark for the ratings system, which classifies players from level 1 to level 7 and groups them in Categories of ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’. More information will follow about how and when you can book an assessment. OVERCOMING A KEY CHALLENGE One of the many challenges for padel players who are coming from a tennis background is that of letting the ball pass them and learning to use the glass behind them to access more available time.
To overcome this challenge, you need to master the proper positioning and muster the courage to let the ball whiz by without striking out to hit it. It helps greatly to prepare the racket as the ball passes towards the glass, allowing the racket to move and swing forwards down the court as the ball rebounds from the glass and comes alongside you. Practice and coaching can help you master this! Article and photo courtesy of Alan Douglas, Padel Coach

Serious Fun on the Green
We tagged along on a recent Stableford tournament with the German-Swiss Golf Club, at Sembawang Country Club on Saturday 30 March, and gained an insight into why the players love their Club (and their clubs). They hailed from several nationalities and spanned a vast age range from 14 to 79. Here’s what they had to say about why they love to play… “Everyone’s really lovely and it’s nice to get together with people who share a common interest. We’re not actually members yet, though we keep meaning to sign up. It’s probably because ‘we already feel like members’!” Marcela Karbaum German-Swiss Golf Club Member-to-be (and Third-time Guest Player with the Club)
“I love playing with the German-Swiss Golf Club because there are lots of good players here. They give me great guidance and I learn a lot from them.” Antonia, 14 years old (youngest player of the tournament)
“I like the group of people here. After the game, we chill and talk about what happened during the week. I have made some very good friendships here.”
“I love our community. Come join us and have some fun!” Jolanda German-Swiss Golf Club Member for 4.5 years
“I like the frequency of the tournaments and the regular events. Everything is planned well in advance Thomas German-Swiss Golf Club Member by Joachim, which suits my busy for 8 years schedule. I also enjoy the different courses we play at and the nice people you get to meet.” INTERESTED IN PLAYING GOLF? Swiss Week 2019 (#SwissWeek19)
The Embassy of Switzerland organised the inaugural Swiss Week in Singapore from 15 to 21 April. The week-long festival celebrated Swiss-made, Swiss excellence and Swiss expertise in design and architecture. GUEST OF HONOUR Guest of Honour at Swiss Week, the acclaimed Swiss architect Mario Botta, conducted an enthralling master class on his architectural career and a dialogue at Singapore ETH Centre about his latest projects in Asia. Both events were followed by a screening of the documentary ‘Mario Botta. The Space Beyond’ by Swiss film director Loretta Dalpozzo and Michèle Volontè. TWO EXHIBITIONS The well-received exhibition ‘ECAL Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship’ featured design work by students from the Master of Advanced Studies at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne in three categories: Fine Tableware, Swiss Craftsmanship and Fashion Accessories. The Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film presented a mesmerising exhibition on the work of Swiss contemporary
photographers Jojakim Cortis and Adrian Sonderegger. Sponsored by the Embassy of Switzerland, the outdoor exhibition showed 10 images from ICONS, a long-term project featuring iconic images from international photographic history. SWISS CULINARY DELIGHTS Swiss Week provided ample opportunities for indulgence in Swiss cuisine as well as culture. Chef Ernst Huber from Huber’s Butchery presented a delightful Swiss Week-themed menu, while Swiss chef Patrick Heuberger of Atout restaurant dished up a menu of Swiss favourites including Swiss cheese, pork pâté and carrot cake. An enjoyable and enlightening Swiss wine tasting session with Swiss Ambassador Fabrice Filliez was held at the Swiss Club, and a sumptuous menu of ‘Swiss Traditional Food’ was presented by Swiss Association of Singapore (SAS) at the Wine Universe Restaurant.
HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS Discerning sweet tooths loved the chocolate-making classes by Swiss Pastry Chef-Chocolatier Reto Marzari, while crafty types enjoyed the hands-on session by Bernina, where they learned how to make their very own embroidered Edelweiss tote bag. Nature lovers of all ages rallied for ‘Nature wants you back’, an event presented by Switzerland Tourism at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. They got to hike along a Swiss-Singapore themed trail as they learned about conservation as well as awesome hiking opportunities in Singapore and Switzerland. THANK YOU The Embassy of Switzerland takes this opportunity to extend its sincere thanks to all sponsors, partners and participants for their valuable contributions to a successful Swiss Week 2019.
