The Day that Swiss Club Staff… Had Fun and Enjoyed!

A Note from the Editor Dear Members, Firstly, sincere congratulations to all involved in the planning and execution of the Swiss National Day celebrations at the Swiss Club. Despite its relocation from the traditional poolside venue to the more intimate setting of the Lawn and roundabout, it was in my opinion the best of all three of the Club’s National Day events that I have had the pleasure of attending. Apart from the stirring speeches and the perfect weather, possibly the highlight for me (and my fellow chocoholics) was the divine Läderach fresh chocolate buffet… My mouth is watering just thinking about it! On a personal note, I would like to farewell Haresh Kumar, your Marketing and Communications Manager for the last two years, who is moving on to embrace new challenges. As the key person in charge of this magazine, he has been a joy to work with. On behalf of the editorial team, I would like to thank him sincerely for the countless professional courtesies he has extended to us. Haresh, you will be missed. By now you should be planning your outfit to wear to Oktoberfest. Ladies, lace up your dirndls. Gents, button up your lederhosen. Once again it’s shaping up to be the party of the year! Yours,

A Word from the

Committee

Over the summer, and as I am sure you are now aware, the Club remodelling and renovations have kicked off in earnest. I for one am excited for this next chapter of our Club and cannot wait to see the end result.

Welcome back from summer, Swiss Club Members, By now it seems my summer holiday is a distant memory. My family and I were one of the many heading towards Europe and had the pleasure, for the first time, of visiting Montenegro and Croatia – we will definitely be back. I hope everyone managed to detach, relax and spend time with family and friends over the summer break. Over the summer, and as I am sure you are now aware, the Club remodelling and renovations have kicked off in earnest. I for one am excited for this next chapter of our Club and cannot wait to see the end result. The Leisure Pool and Jungle Bar area are the first major remodelling projects to kick off, and the pool itself is due to be completed by the end of September with the brand new Jungle Kiosk appearing around the end of October. One thing I have noticed is the enjoyment people have had with the tables set up around the front of the Clubhouse and near the tennis courts. Maybe this is something to consider making permanent? Once the pool and Jungle Kiosk are completed, the really big renovation takes place! Please take a look at my fellow Committee Member Will Forwood’s update on Page 8 of this magazine. The Food and Beverage team under Adrian will also soon be updating Members on eating and drinking options while the renovation takes place. I have had a sneak peek and I think that the team has done a great job in ensuring continuity of service options.

As part of my Committee role, I sit on the marketing and membership sub-committee with Pooja Agarwal. In recent times, marketing for the Club has been handled by Haresh. Haresh has decided to move onto another opportunity outside the Club and we wish him well. The good news is that we have hired a marketing specialist, Riza Mazlan. Welcome to the Swiss Club, Riza. Riza has a deep understanding of digital and his first task will be to develop a robust marketing plan for the next few years. This is especially important as we look to take advantage of a “new and revitalised” club in 2020, to ensure our Club remains a hugely attractive option in a competitive environment. Both myself and Pooja will help support Riza, Aaron and the team as the plan comes together. Aside from the actual marketing plan, Riza will also look to refresh the current website and help to determine and test whether other communication channels can be of use to you, the Members. Channels such as mobile apps spring to mind! Finally, I would like to remind all Members of the upcoming Annual General Meeting on 23 September 2019, to be held at the Club from 7pm. Cheers,

R. Hills

A Message from the

General Manager

The Swiss Club’s 20th Anniversary Oktoberfest will be in full swing from 11-15 September 2019. Tickets are already sold out on Friday and Saturday!

Dear Members, A warm welcome back to the Club! I do hope you enjoyed a well-deserved break with family and friends back home.

22 July 2019. The day also provided our maintenance crew with the necessary time to conform to the regulatory annual electric power shutdown.

While you were away, the Club has been abuzz with a full schedule of activities, starting with the closure of the Leisure Pool and Jungle Bar. The renovation works are going as planned, with the Leisure Pool to be completed by end-September and the Jungle Kiosk a month later by end-October.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for Monday 23 September 2019, and your attendance is greatly appreciated. The AGM provides an excellent overview of new Initiatives, financial reporting and, most importantly, updates on the Masterplan for Members’ review and voting.

The ever popular Swiss National Day was once again well attended despite the ongoing renovations and a totally different setup at the Lawn. A lot of positive feedback was received from all Members and guests who attended. A big thank you to our sponsors – Just Swiss, Swatch and Läderach, and to our partners – the Swiss Alpine Lions and Senses AV, and to my team for making it a truly memorable evening.

The Swiss Club’s 20 th Anniversary Oktoberfest will be in full swing from 11-15 September 2019. Tickets are already sold out on Friday and Saturday!

In spite of our hectic schedule, our staff still managed to squeeze in the time for a day to let their hair down and have fun at our staff party on the sea. This would not have been possible without the support of all Members to allow the closure of the Club on

See you soon at the Club. Best Regards,

The idea of the food in a circle like a market was really good.

A Swiss National with a Twist

Paloma Blickensdorfer

This year’s Swiss National Day celebrations broke with tradition. Instead of being staged around our Leisure Pool, which is closed for renovations, it was held on the Lawn in front of the Clubhouse. A spectacular curved buffet line curved around the roundabout like a gigantic horseshoe. CALM WEATHER AND STIRRING SPEECHES At around 6pm, guests starting pouring in to the Swiss Club – but thankfully the rain did not. Well over 400 guests dotted the Lawn as they enjoyed their apero of excellent red and white Swiss wine, courtesy of the Swiss Embassy. Just after 6.30pm, our Deputy President Adrian Jacklowsky gave a lighthearted yet stirring welcome speech. The crowd responded in high spirits to his tongue-in-cheek remarks about how much children loved speeches, especially speeches about history. He then asked the children to identify themselves by screaming as loud as they could. After an enthusiastic chorus of cheers and squeals and a good few giggles, he declared, “You, the children, you are our future.”

Day Celebration (and a Curve) Adrian went on to briefly reflect on the past and the inevitability of change, as exemplified by the commencement of the first phase of the Club’s renovations. He sincerely thanked The Swatch Group, Just Swiss and Läderach for sponsoring the lucky draw prizes, and the Embassy of Switzerland for sponsoring the apero, before welcoming His Excellency Fabrice Filliez, Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation.

Next came this year’s annual address to all Swiss living abroad, by the Swiss President Ueli Maurer. He spoke about the shared values that connect all Swiss, far and wide – namely punctuality, reliability, modesty and diligence. Above all, he wished everyone happiness – but playfully added that he hopes every Swiss living abroad feels ever so slightly homesick for Switzerland. After the President’s greeting, a musical rendition of the Swiss National Anthem brought everyone to their feet. And then the feasting began… SWITZERLAND LOVES SINGAPORE LOVES SWITZERLAND His Excellency greeted the crowd in five languages before moving on to the excellent bilateral relations enjoyed by Singapore and Switzerland. He recapped the long history of the Swiss community in Singapore, paralleled by the history of the Swiss Club. A few minutes into his speech, a fleet of exceedingly loud Air Force fighter jets flew overhead, as if to second the points being made. (They were of course practising for Singapore’s National Day Parade that took place one week later.) The Ambassador impressed the audience with a list of the Swiss companies that had opened for business over the last 12 months, including flavour creators Givaudan, premium kitchen appliance manufacturer V-ZUG and world-leading sewing machine manufacturer Bernina. Nearing the end of his speech, he offered these inspirational words. “All of you have a share in these excellent bilateral relations between Switzerland and Singapore. At the end of the day, every Swiss company active abroad, and every Swiss citizen living abroad, can be, in its respective field of action, a Swiss ambassador. You can promote our values. You can speak about our direct democracy, our federalism, our humanitarian tradition. You can be examples of Swiss excellence and innovation,” said His Excellency Fabrice Filliez.

BUFFET IN THE ROUND Though the change of venue was a temporary arrangement prompted by the pool closure, feedback was so overwhelmingly positive that nobody would be surprised if the arrangement was made permanent. The circular shape of the roundabout was fully utilised and surrounded by a curved buffet line with all traditional Swiss delicacies and a few international dishes. The superb pork loin with crackling, succulent sirloin steaks and hearty sausages were as popular as ever. As usual, the eight raclette stations drew fast-moving queues. Going by the number of repeat visitors, it was well worth the short wait. Another popular stop was the delicious mushroom risotto station, served from a massive wheel of Parmigiano-Reggiano. SWEET FINALE The dessert table was groaning with jewel-like fruit tarts, luscious Blackforest cake and all manner of sweet treats. The piece de resistance was the sumptuous chocolate buffet by generous sponsor, Swiss chocolatier Läderach. An eye-catching centerpiece as created by stacked slabs of frischschoggi, or fresh chocolate, in a mouth-watering array of varieties, from dark to white. The crowd favourites were the white chocolate flecked with raspberry and the Florentine, creamy milk chocolate topped with a crunchy layer of thin toffee-coated flaked almonds.

LAMPIONS AND LEAPING FLAMES As per tradition, at around 9pm the children gathered with paper lampions and proceeded to the carpark as they were serenaded by the Swiss Alpine Lions. At intervals, methylated spirits was poured onto the stacked logs, sending leaping flames and children’s delighted squeals heavenwards. The tongues of fire seemed to dance in sync with the booming music as the band played on under the verandah of the Swiss School. VALUED FEEDBACK As the fire blazed, we got chatting to young Paloma Blickensdorfer, aged eight and a half. She praised the evening’s celebrations and deemed this year’s event superior to last year’s. “The idea of the food in a circle like a market was really good. I like the way you start and just keep going all the way round till you reach the end,” praised Paloma. “It’s much better than going from station to station.” Her friend, Chloe Raubach, also aged eight and a half, concurred and added, “The highlights of tonight were the desserts – they were really good, and the bonfire.” Paloma added that she enjoyed the close proximity of the band, since unlike in previous years, “… they played right in front of you!” As Adrian pointed out, children are the future of the world, including our very own Swiss Club. You heard it from Paloma – good job, everyone!

A FEW WORDS FROM OUR SPONSORS “Most Swiss already know our brand, but may not know that it’s now available in Singapore. We’re here to send a message to the Swiss community – now you don’t have to go all the way home to Switzerland to enjoy our superb natural herbal products. We hope that you will spread the word about the benefits of Just Swiss plant-based personal care products and natural remedies to all your friends.” Gabriella Tan, Authorised Consultant, Just Swiss “The Läderach family have been very supportive in our journey to bring the brand to Southeast Asia. We are very grateful to be able to share the joy of Läderach at the Swiss Club for the second year. The Swiss community in Singapore have been a great encouragement for us with our shared love for these chocolates, and our presence here is our thanks for the warm welcome they have given us. We hope that all guests will enjoy the familiar and comforting taste of their favourite FrischSchoggi (Fresh Chocolates), whether from the lucky draw, buffet, or in their goodie bags, as a sweet aftertaste of this wonderful evening.” Shawn Hoe, Brand Manager, Läderach

The Day that Swiss Club Staff...

HAD FUN AND ENJ YED! On 22 July 2019, Swiss Club staff enjoyed a well-deserved day off with team-building, delicious food and welcome relaxation on the Aegean Paradise Cruise. The theme for this year’s staff party was to “Have fun and enjoy”.

of a massage, a pedicure or karaoke – tough call. We could also watch the on-board cruise entertainment. A DELICIOUS DINNER Next came a lavish dinner buffet, prepared by the Cruise kitchen. It was followed by a closing speech by Aaron, an awards ceremony and a lucky draw. How lovely it was to sit back and be waited on for a change! All in all, it was a delightful day that made each of us feel acknowledged, appreciated and rewarded.

AN EARLY START AND A BIG BREAKFAST The day kicked off early in the morning at around 6am, when all staff reported at various pick-up points to head down to Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. From there, we took the ferry and transit over to the Aegean Paradise Cruise, where we gathered to enjoy a big breakfast buffet together. FUN AND GAMES Fully refuelled after breakfast, we formed teams for a series of lighthearted ice-breaking games, which put everyone in the mood for fun. Next came the adrenaline-charged ‘amazing race’ during which staff got to explore the different areas and history of the cruise ship. The energetic activities were followed by a ‘free and easy’ session during which staff got to choose how they spent their time. We had the choice Article and photos courtesy of Jasmine Tan and Ryonne Chong

On behalf of the management and staff of the Swiss Club, a big ‘thank you’ goes out to all Members for your kind understanding over the limited operation of the Club outlets and services on the day of the event. In addition, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of our generous sponsors.

Here’s a roundup of the Swiss Club’s summer camps. Thanks to everyone who participated, parents and kids. If you missed out, there’s always next summer…

TENNIS WAS A HIT

We also had fun during summer holidays with Tennis camps. We had tons of fun during the summer holidays with the tennis camps. Thanks to all the kids who came to learn or improve their tennis through the 2-month holiday. It’s always good to play in a relaxed holiday mood, without the stress of homework or exams. Your smiles make it all worth while!

SOCCER WAS A SENSATION

Starting in the last week of June and finishing in the first week of July, CUFA’s summer camps saw two groups enjoy the 5-day camp held in the sun-smart, air-conditioned halls at the Swiss Club. Then followed two 4-day camps on the outdoor pitch in July. Girls and boys of all ages and abilities got to unwind, make some new friends and learn some new skills to take them into another school year.

aquaDucks WAS AWESOME

The two summer camps held in July and August were a great way for the children to have fun while improving their swimming skills. A fun-filled yet part-serious programme saw the happy campers emerge more ‘water-smart’ and honestly tired from good old-fashioned physical activity. Thanks, little aquaDucks!

S P O R T S

With so many new exercise programmes trending, from jumping and boxing to HIIT classes and cycling, it’s hard to know what fits you best. Then there’s the hype surrounding ‘high intensity’, ‘high impact’ and ‘low impact’. No wonder many people are confused by all the fitness choices out there. Read on for the answers to your questions. So what would be a good programme?

In general, I recommend a programme that includes a variety of workouts. While I strongly recommend including a high impact workout, choose something that is not too intense and do it only on a once-a-week basis. Keep the majority of your workouts to low/ medium intensity programs. That will apply ample stress on your joints and skeleton and give you time to recover, too.

HIGH IMPACT EXERCISE PROGRAMMES What does that even mean?

Exercises that put pressure on your joints as well as your muscles while exercising.

Is that bad for me?

The simple answer is that for the healthy individual a certain degree of high impact exercises have vital health benefits.

If I have an injury should I be only doing low impact exercises? Should I even exercise?

That depends on a number of factors. You should get an expert to advise you on this. In general, avoiding impact in exercise will lead your bone mass to continually deteriorate over time.

25

S P O R T S

Should I do it? And how often?

You should only undertake a HIIT programme that is aligned with your level of fitness and experience. If you are new to this, do not do it on a daily basis, since you need to give your body sufficient time to recover in between workouts and thus avoid injuries. You should add a resistance programme a couple of times a week to build up your physical strength. This will probably be the primary building block of your physical programme. Do not be tempted to skip conditioning your body with a regular strength and conditioning programme, as this will help ensure that you are physically able to carry on training and speed up your progress.

VARIETY IS THE KEY TO FITNESS HIIT PROGRAMMES What is HIIT?

It stands for high-intensity interval training (but you probably knew that). HIIT has been the buzzword for a while now. Most people are familiar with it – and they are, sadly, also familiar with the injuries and the DOMS that come with it. (If you don’t know what DOMS means, Google it!)

To sum it up, you should aim to incorporate a variety of programmes to stay in good shape. Do not stick to something that is only within your comfort zone, as it will provide diminishing returns. If you want to be fit in the holistic sense, widen your range of exercise programmes and embrace the new, with common sense and caution.

Football: Symbol of Swiss-Singapore Friendship Over 300 students from local and international schools as well as football academies will be competing in the Switzerland-Singapore Football Festival 2019 (#ssff19) on 5 October 2019. Date : 5 October 2019 (Saturday) Time : 8am to 1pm Venue : NS Square (20 Raffles Ave, Singapore 039805) THIRD SWITZERLAND-SINGAPORE FOOTBALL FESTIVAL Two years ago, on the occasion of Switzerland’s 50th year of diplomatic relations with Singapore, the Embassy and Sport Singapore started a new collaboration with the Switzerland-Singapore Football Festival. Sport Singapore, via ActiveSG Football Academy, provided an opportunity for a large group of youths to compete in a football tournament at the NS Square, previously known as The Float @ Marina Bay. Following the success of the first tournament in 2017, the Embassy made it an annual event. This year’s edition marks Swiss Ambassador Filliez’s first Switzerland-Singapore Football Festival. Switzerland and Singapore share the belief that football fosters team spirit, communication skills, and a sense of belonging through social and cultural exchange between players and supporters on the field. The Guest-of-Honour, Ms Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth will also be supporting the young players and their families. Article courtesy of the Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore

FRIENDSHIPS TO BE FORGED In previous years, the girls and boys displayed determination and perseverance. This year, their shared passion for football will again forge new bonds and friendships with a total of around 20 teams vying to be 2019’s champions. The two winning teams from each category will be awarded with a trophy while all players in the top three teams from each category receive a medal. The highlight of the tournament will be the award ceremony, to be graced by Senior Minister of State Ms. Sim Ann. Ambassador Filliez will deliver closing remarks on celebrating football as a unifying force, allowing youths of different nationalities to interact and learn from each other. A WARM INVITATION TO ALL Sixteen local and international schools were invited to this year’s tournament. The Embassy wishes to extend a warm invitation to all football fans to join this year’s SwitzerlandSingapore Football Festival (#ssff19) as spectators. Stay tuned to our Facebook (@SwissEmbassySingapore) and Twitter (@SwissAmbSGP) for more updates and coverage of the event!

NEWS FROM THE

I N T E R E S T

Meet Our New Teachers We warmly welcome five new teachers to the Swiss School in Singapore for the school year 2019/2020. Learn a little about each of them here.

Murielle Quenzer, French Stream P1/2 Class Teacher

Bonjour! I am Murielle Quenzer and I will be the French stream’s new teacher. I can’t wait to start this challenge and I am very glad to be part of the SSIS team. I have a Master in Sciences of Education and have been a primary teacher for more than twenty years. I love working in a multicultural environment and I’m happy to have experienced it in different places like Argentina, Colombia, Hong Kong and Switzerland. I enjoy discovering new cultures, countries and people and I am looking forward to my new life in Singapore. During my free time, I love spending time with nature, reading a good book and travelling around the world. As a chocolate eater, Ialso have to do some sport! In my teaching, the keywords are success, curiosity, mutual aid and autonomy. I feel very proud to be able to contribute to the development of each child’s potential. And because my work can’t be done without the cooperation of colleagues and parents, let’s embark on a wonderful adventure together!”

Debora Kim Fehr, P4/5 Class Teacher

I am 33 years old and have been working as a primary school teacher for the past ten years. My passion and fascination for learning lies in finding creative solutions to support the students in the achievement of their goals. Assisting them in expanding their knowledge and developing their skills is a dynamic and very personal process, which I enjoy being part of. In addition to working part-time, I completed a Master of Advanced Studies in Effective Management of Diversity in 2017. This allowed me to expand my knowledge of teaching and gave me a more thorough insight into my professional field. People see me as an open-minded and joyous person who loves to laugh. I like to spend my free time with nature as well as socialising with groups of friends. I cherish life as a gift and try to enjoy every moment of it.”

Daniela Richert, Kindergarten Class Teacher

Hi, my name is Daniela Richert, I’m 45 years old, married and I have three children. I came to Singapore in the summer of 2018 and since then Article and photos courtesy of Charlene Chen

I’ve studied English at an international school. Although I’ve been teaching kindergarten classes for over 20 years now, I’m very excited about this new challenge. When I’m not teaching, I like to spend my time with my family and our family dog, travelling around the world, reading a lot of books or taking long, relaxing walks. I love to discover new places, cultures and meeting new people. And even with my average English knowledge, I try to communicate with other people as much as I can.”

Nadine Sadek, English Subject Teacher

My name is Nadine Sadek and I am very excited to be joining the Swiss School team in Singapore as an English teacher for the 2019/20 academic year. I recently relocated to Singapore with my husband and two boys in September of last year. We are a typical expat family with a multi-cultural, international character and several different languages spoken at home to boot so it was no surprise that I jumped at the opportunity to join the Swiss School faculty where several languages are heard spoken every day. As a youngster, I grew up in a diplomatic family and had the great fortune to spend my entire childhood and youth traveling around the world. I completed my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Government and Spanish literature at Cornell University in the United States and proceeded to obtain my Master of Education from The College of New Jersey some years later. Although my interest in international affairs and languages of the world was evident in most aspects of my life, nothing has given me the same fulfillment and satisfaction that teaching has provided. I have taught in the USA, Egypt, Indonesia, Italy and now, I am very excited to be teaching in Singapore.”

Yvonne Zweifel, Special Needs Teacher

I’m Swiss and I started at the Swiss School in Singapore with 17 years of experience as a teacher. I worked for ten years as a primary school teacher and later studied special needs education, from which I graduated in 2016. During my studies, I lived and worked one year in London. For the last five years, I’ve been employed as a special needs teacher in Eschenbach SG. When I’m not teaching, I like to travel the world. I’ve been on several longer journeys in Central and South America, Australia and Asia. I love to discover new places, engage with people and practise languages. I look forward to being part of the Swiss School community in Singapore.”

Time Flies…

Wendt You’re Having Fun at the Club We chatted with our German guests, Dr. Michael Wendt and Dr. Ruth Festl, who are staying at the Guesthouse as short-term Recreational Members, together with their 18-month-old son Maximilian. COMING AND GOING Michael and Ruth arrived in Singapore on 30 July and are due to leave on 11 September. Ruth, a senior researcher at the Leibnitz-Institute für Wissensmedien in Germany, is here to conduct two research projects at Nanyang Technological University. Michael works in IT and has taken time off to care for Maximilian and explore Singapore with him. GOOD FOOD AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS Michael grew up at the German-Austrian border on the German side of the Alps. He has a PhD in Economics and Business Administration. Ruth grew up close to Munich. She has a PhD in communication science, pedagogy and psychology. Her research focuses on the use and impact of digital media, especially among children and adolescents, and on families. This impressive couple met at university while studying for their doctorates and married in the snow-covered Bavarian-Austrian Alps in February 2017 – in traditional Bavarian lederhosen and dirndl! In addition to their gorgeous son, Michael and Ruth share a love of good food, the great outdoors and travelling the world. LOVING SINGAPORE AND THE SWISS CLUB Michael and Ruth are full of praise for Singapore – and full of our legendary local food!

“We have a superb impression of Singapore. Since we are ‘foodies’, we are taking full advantage of its many culinary offerings,” shared Michael. Evidently, those culinary offerings include almost everything on the menu at Pergola and Arbenz. “I think we have tried almost everything on the menu at Pergola, and we’ve never been disappointed,” said Ruth. She also commended Arbenz and its charming setting.

The Swiss Club Guesthouse and short-term Recreational Membership bring together all the benefits of staying at a nice hotel, with even more facilities. Dr. Ruth Festl

Ruth and Michael singled out the Swiss Club’s staff, who have made their stay “very special”. They also appreciate the cordial company of Swiss Club Members. “We have had many pleasant encounters with fellow Swiss Club Members, and have enjoyed every single conversation!” said Michael. BENEFITS OF A RECREATIONAL MEMBERSHIP Michael and Ruth have no regrets regarding their decision to stay at the Guesthouse versus a long-term stay at a hotel or serviced apartment. “The Swiss Club Guesthouse and short-term Recreational Membership bring together all the benefits of staying at a nice hotel, with even more facilities,” said Ruth. “Plus lots of open spaces and some interesting history,” added Michael.

Both halves of this gracious couple assured us that they would love to come back to the Guesthouse and to the Swiss Club next time they are in Singapore. Likewise, we would love to host them again. Danke, Michael and Ruth – have a wonderful stay at the Guesthouse!
