Hello, again. Thank you for the ongoing privilege of being a part of your Club, if only as a supplier (strictly speaking). I had the pleasure of attending your Easter brunch, and was utterly charmed by the little faces smeared with chocolate, and the excited yet orderly queue at the face-painting table. Picturepostcard scenes of happy family life played out under blue skies, complete with scampering squirrels and chirping birds…

The Swiss Club Wants You!
SWISS CLUB
We are looking for energetic, conscientious and dedicated Members to step up and join the Swiss Club Committee. Due to relocations and vacancies caused by changes in professional and personal circumstances, we have a number of positions waiting to be filled including the very important role of Swiss Club President. It is with great regret and immense gratitude that we must inform you that our current President Mr Martin Silberstein is stepping down at the upcoming Annual General Meeting on September 25, 2017, after 12 years of loyal service to our Club. If you would like to take a more active role in shaping the future of your Club, and if you are willing to dedicate some time every month on Club matters, you are just the person we are looking for. The Club Committee meets monthly and ad-hoc whenever needed. The Committee members very much enjoy working as a team and value everyone’s opinion. Committee decisions are made by simple majority votes on a one member – one vote basis. We would very much welcome more diversity in the Committee by adding again Non-Swiss members and more female Committee members. Please note that according to our Club Rules, the President and Vice-President must be Swiss nationals. Don’t worry - you don’t have to be a mathematical genius or a captain of your industry to join. Only a love for the Swiss Club is a must! Interested? Please do come forward and email your name, a short profile and any special areas of expertise, to: secretary@swissclub.org.sg. Thank you very much for your interest and we will be in touch!

SWISS CLUB
A WORD FROM THE COMMITTEE
Dear Members of the Swiss Club, As mentioned by René Cotting in the last edition of RELAX magazine, the land sale proceeds are now with the Swiss Club.
The Committee deliberated extensively on investing in projects that provide either safety or improve the Member experience.
IMPROVEMENTS The Committee has been looking at various projects that needed immediate attention and have approved a few of them. The Committee deliberated extensively on investing in projects that provide either safety or improve the Member experience. • The former Squash court area is currently being upgraded to facilitate a multi-purpose area for games and sports so you and your family have the chance to practise the likes of futsal, basketball and mini-tennis. Club Management liaised with the British Club for our Swiss Club Members to be able to utilise the British Club Squash courts upon registration and payment of a small fee. Do approach Club Management, if interested in Squash. • The pool furniture and jungle bar parasols are being upgraded to replacements with better quality and durability. Many thanks to those Members who provided feedback based on the samples that were displayed last month. • The lights around the pool have been given a facelift with a splash of paint, cleaning and new electric wiring to make the overall atmosphere more pleasing and safer. You will see the results of these projects coming to fruition over the coming weeks and months. In addition, Tennis court 2 and the Padel court were resurfaced and seating areas were fitted with new parasols and LED lights so you can enjoy the seating venue day and night.
6
THE FUTURE OF YOUR CLUB Given the challenging environment for attracting new members to the Club, the Committee is also deliberating what the future Club should look like, and how this would drive increased membership. After some discussion, the Committee agreed to set aside a ‘strategy day 2017’ to discuss this topic and others in more detail. We will share the details with you as they become clearer. WE NEED YOU! If you would like to take a more active role in shaping the future of your Club, and if you are willing to dedicate some time every month to Club matters, you are just the person we are looking for. The Club Committee meets monthly and ad-hoc whenever needed. The Committee Members really enjoy working as a team and value everyone’s opinion. Committee decisions are made by simple majority votes on a one member-one vote basis. We would greatly welcome more diversity in the Committee by adding more non-Swiss Members and more female Committee Members. Please note that according to our Club Rules, the President and Deputy President must be Swiss nationals. As always, we are grateful for your constructive feedback and are looking forward to working with you in making this family-oriented Club environment even more enjoyable. Thank you,

SWISS CLUB
A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members, What a great, yet challenging two months it has been for the Club! You may wonder why, what and how this statement can be in made in one sentence? Yet, on the (great) positive side, the Club was buzzing with Members during our Swiss Z'Morge Breakfast and the annual Easter Brunch, which saw some 120 Members, guests and kids indulge in a superb buffet as well as egg and face painting fun, outdoors. It didn't stop there, as the Pergola chefs put on the most successful promotion to date with an array of soft shell tacos that made everyone 'taco loco' – and we hear you! Chef Jacky and his team will add these bestsellers to the new menu scheduled within May. Who would think it could get any greater? But it did. Chef Adrian and his talented culinary team again won, for the second year running, the prestigious Beefsteak & Burgundy Award, which measures Arbenz against top restaurants in Singapore. This is no easy feat, as the saying goes; great food without great service is not a recipe for success, so hence a heartfelt congratulations to the entire staff from the Committee, Management and, I'm certain, all Club Members too. Keep up this great work! Do consider Arbenz next time you have lunch or dinner plans. Do stop by! Yet, challenges are certainly felt and forecast to continue for some time. At our recent 'Open House' which enticed some 130 visitors, we met many potential members who, after our tours, told us they were project-based, contracted annually or shifted to local contracts, which certainly indicates a somewhat slowing economic trend. The Club still remains extremely attractive with new Members joining, but somewhat with a shorter-term membership base. With challenges, come opportunities – and, with summer around the corner, the Club will once again introduce the Summer Membership (15 June till 15 August). If you have friends or know newcomers to Singapore, do refer them to our webpage or call us for a tour. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
8
As Anantha mentioned in his message, the scheduled upgrades will hopefully enhance your Club experience and we look forward to see you, your family and friends at the Club, be it for dining, business or fitness, beauty and health. Last but not least, do tap into your electronic device the dates: 5 August and 20-24 September as the Club celebrates Swiss National Day and the most famous Oktoberfest in Southeast Asia – you don't want to miss it! Have a great summer and do enjoy the new facilities and upgrades. See you at the Club,

CLUB-WIDE
Wines of the Month for May and June Piccini Collezione Oro Chianti Riserva DOCG 2013 Tuscany How much: $69 per bottle $14 per 150ml glass
What:
Tasting Notes
Piccini Chianti Reserva ‘Selezione Oro’ has a lively red colour verging on vibrant crimson with ageing. Of intense and persistent fruity bouquet, flavour develops sinuously, with subtle notes of vanilla and a dash of spice coming through in the end. Warm palate with soft tannins, ‘Selezione Oro’ reveals itself in velvety shades, rich in texture, with a long aftertaste. It is a wine of profound complexity, harmonious and elegant.
What: How much:
Piccini Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie I.G.T 2015 Friuli-Venezia Giulia $69 per bottle $14 per 150ml glass
Tasting Notes
Straw yellow in colour with greenish hues, Piccini Pinot Grigio is a light- to medium-bodied wine. On the nose, it shows immediate prominent flowery bouquet and fruit, dominated by apple and peach, holding a firm and fruity palate. Its crisp acidity balances well with the soft character, making it a pleasant and easy to drink wine.
Spirits of Switzerland What: 1616 Swiss Dry Gin How much: $12 per shot Nose: Palate: Departure:
Full juniper and spicy aromas, with hints of ripe oranges and a touch of fresh limes. Full-bodied and complex with an oily consistency, all ingredients harmoniously blend together, while the juniper dominates wonderfully as the ‘king’! The spices linger like a walk through a Moroccan bazaar, with long-lasting sweet notes of milk chocolate, oranges and juniper.
About LangatUn Langatun was created in 2007, but the family behind it has a history in brewing and distilling that stretches back more than 100 years. Jakob Baumberger took over a small brewery in the 1860s, acquiring a top-quality springwater source a decade or so later. After his death, his son Hans carried on the work, setting up a peat-cutting business to provide fuel for the distillery and malting plant. Fast forward to the present day and his grandson Hans Baumberger III has continued the story, producing Langatun whisky, as well as rum, vodka and liqueurs. The distillery is based in an old grain store in the village of Langatun, situated about 30 miles north-east of the capital, Bern. It currently stocks two lines: Old Deer and Old Bear. What: Langatun Old Deer Whisky 2009, 40% ABV How much: $12 per shot Nose: Palate: Finish:
Good mix of woody spice and rich fruit – roasted banana, toasted marshmallows, Parma violets and a savoury, almost rubbery note. Soft and balanced, alternating between soft fruit and toasty spice. Plenty of creamy fruit on the palate – stewed apples and melon – along with cinnamon and nutmeg, cracked black pepper and a touch of banana skin. Fruity and peppery, with the soft spice gently fading.
What: Langatun Old Bear Whisky 2010, 40% ABV How much: $12 per shot Nose: Palate: Finish:

Herbal and pine-cone freshness leaps from the glass, then richer aromas of vanilla custard and stewed red berries. More custard notes on the palate, subtle smoke and black pepper, along with stewed fruit, cake spices and toasty oak. Burnt sugar and cinnamon, with a hint of red berries.
This year the Swiss Club hosted two Valentine’s Day events – a delightful dinner on Saturday 11 February, the perfect occasion for couples, and a Valentine’s Day brunch on Sunday 12 February, a heartwarming gathering for families. As well-dressed couples arrived arm in arm, the music started up. A duo of acoustic jazz musicians drifted from table to table, serenading the guests. A delicious dinner was served, and the conversation flowed along with the champagne and wine.
The weather was extremely accommodating – until around noon when the heavens opened and the rain poured down. But luckily it did nothing to dampen the spirits of the guests.
LOVER CONQUERS ALL, BAD WEATHER INCLUDED Saturday evening did not get off to a promising start. Staff looked up anxiously at the grey skies. Droplets of rain started falling, and a strong wind howled ominously.
Speaking of luck, another three lucky winners walked away with a pair of tickets to Chicago The Musical. Congratulations to Elena Frei, Thomas Vonrueti and Patrice Collette.
Then, miraculously, the weather cleared just in time for dinner. It was a repeat performance of the fickle weather of the previous year.
Special thanks to BASE Entertainment for their generous sponsorship of the Chicago The Musical tickets.
LUCKY IN LOVE This year, a lucky draw added an element of suspense and surprise. May Cotting-Wong and Manfred Korger each won a pair of tickets to see Chicago The Musical. A BEAUTIFUL BRUNCH The next day was the Valentine’s brunch. Paulina was on hand to ensure that the sumptuous spread of food was laid out and ready to be served before 11am, when a steady stream of groups arrived.
All in all, it was a magical pair of celebrations, helped along by (possibly) the most romantic setting in all of Singapore – the Swiss Club!

At one point, light rain threatened to dampen the spirit of the evening, not to mention extinguish the grill. However, despite the drizzle, the sizzle continued… Along the way, the grill master was ‘grilled’ by curious guests, hungry for his professional tips on grilling. Ueli generously shared the wisdom of his experience, fielding all questions with good-humoured responses.
Smoking Hot! Ueli Grill and Workshop
The evening’s 3-course menu kicked off with apero of plum with crème cheese and bacon, chicken wings and meat balls. This little taste of things to come was fingerlicking good, and promptly followed by an appetizer of whole salmon fillet with maple syrup, accompanied by assorted mixed greens… Exquisite!
On Sunday 2 April, Chef Ueli graced the Swiss Club and thrilled the tastebuds of some 40 Members and guests with his grilled masterpieces.
Ueli won the title of Swiss Barbeque Champion eight times, European Champion four times and World Champion four times. WHO IS UELI? The quadruple winner of the crown of ‘World Barbecue Champion’, Ueli discovered his passion for barbecuing more than 30 years ago. At 19 years old, he completed his training in butchery and became a master butcher in 1987. In 1997, he entered the Swiss Barbecue Competition for the first time and took home the top trophy. He went on to win the title of Swiss Barbeque Champion eight times, European Champion four times and World Champion four times. In 2015, he was voted Butcher of the Year in Switzerland by the Swiss Butcher Association. Today, Ueli owns a small gourmet butchery, which continues to employ time-honoured methods of artisanal production. The Swiss Club was delighted to host this affable and gifted grill master 16
Then came the main. A hearty lamb rack with rosemary-spiked potatoes and zucchini was cooked to succulent perfection. Every bone was licked clean – gracefully, of course.
as Guest Chef for one unforgettably delicious dinner and workshop. FOOD, GLORIOUS GRILLED FOOD On the Sunday of Chef Ueli’s ‘one-night stand’ at the Club, the guests poured in from 6pm. The hands-on chef had been prepping for hours beforehand. The mouthwatering aromas wafted up and all the way in to Arbenz.
Despite a unanimous feeling of extreme fullness and blissful satisfaction, the dessert was not wasted – it occupies a separate compartment in the stomach, does it not? Chocolate banana with vanilla ice cream served as a fitting finale to a perfect meal. Thank you, Ueli, for an evening of utterly thrilling grilling.
The Easter Brunch Bunch
Over 100 Members and guests converged on the Swiss Club on Sunday 16 April for a fun-filled day of eating, drinking and bonding. It was ‘full house’ in Arbenz, and the festivities spilled over into Pergola. WIDE EYES, BIG SMILES AND PAINTED FACES The queues for the face painting started forming before the official start at 12pm, and many children showed up twice and even thrice to get their faces painted. No space left on the face? Not a problem. The enterprising children simply offered up their arms!
Desserts were a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. A favourite was the exquisite and very Instagram-worthy Mango and Yuzu Mousse Rabbit. But perhaps most popular of all, especially among younger diners, was the chocolate fountain!
WHAT A SPREAD! At 11am, a splendid feast was laid out in the Rifle Lounge, and constantly replenished throughout the day till 3pm. Choice seafood including oysters, prawns, mussels and clams glistened on its bed of ice. The carving station
The egg painting station was also popular. The differing styles were equally endearing – the meticulous little dabs of the older and more patient children contrasted with the slapdash approach of the younger ones.
PERFECT WEATHER, PERFECT DAY The weather was perfect, and so was the day. A big ‘thank you’ to those Members who chose the Swiss Club for their family celebration. We hope you’ll make some more happy memories with us this coming Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. with roast lamb, spatchcocks and prime ribs was a hot spot, and the fresh pasta station also drew a steady stream of visitors. Indian dishes of Chicken Tikka, Prawn Curry and Biryani sent their delicious spices wafting through the air.

Ready, Steady, Lose! Crash diets, fad diets and starvation diets can all be temporarily effective, but do not lead to long-term weight loss. The good news is, the tried and tested methods will work in the vast majority of cases.
NO SECRET, JUST COMMON SENSE I squirm when I hear the media talking about the 'secret' to healthy weight loss. In truth, there is no secret, since it’s a topic that is openly discussed every day. And there are no shortcuts, either. The key to losing weight and keeping it off is to simply eat healthily on a daily basis, and exercise regularly. In truth, most of us already know what we should be doing.
deficit should be achieved through a combination of consuming fewer calories through healthier eating choices and burning more calories through increased physical activity. FAT TRAPS AND PLANNED TREATS Among the common mistakes that the majority of individuals make upon attaining their ideal healthy weight is to simply get complacent. On reaching their target, some people think they no longer need to enforce the healthy eating habits they practised to achieve their success in the first place. It’s all about mindset. However, there's no point in making your life miserable by denying yourself the pleasure of food. I'm all for an occasional treat to sate your cravings.
HEALTHY RATE OF LOSS A healthy rate of weight loss is around 1kg a week, but it depends on how heavy you are. For those who are not far from their ideal weight range, a loss of 1kg every two weeks is still very healthy. Conversely, for the very overweight, the first few kilos should tumble off with relative ease once a healthier diet and even a moderate exercise regime are suddenly adopted. Generally, weight loss in excess of 1kg per week is not advisable, as you may lose muscle along with the fat. To lose 1 kg per week, you need a calorie deficit of about 1,100 calories per day. That doesn’t mean eating 1,100 calories fewer than usual every day. Ideally, the 20
A healthy rate of weight loss is around 1kg a week, but it depends on how heavy you are.
Don’t eliminate carbs, fats or proteins. Your body requires good sources of all of them. Timothy
In summary, and at the risk of stating the obvious, a balanced diet and regular exercise are the keys to sustainable weight loss. And if you’ll forgive me for stating more of the obvious – today is a great day to get started!
Timothy I like the 80/20 rule. Unless your goal is to have rock-hard abs year round, you don’t need to eat like a squirrel. I recommend eating 80% of your daily intake as healthy food, preferably prepared by you at home. This prevents you from eating unnecessary calories. Then you can indulge in the balance 20% of the food you eat. But be careful, as it’s easy to over-eat the 20%! One final word of advice – don’t eliminate carbs, fats or proteins. Your body requires good sources of all of them.

March Marvels and Medals
NEPTUNE LEAGUE On 24 March, we competed in the Neptune League at Tanglin Club. Since the pool measures 33 metres, instead of the 25-metre and 50-metres races we are used to, the races were 33 metres and 66 metres. A lot of kids moved up in their age groups, and given the extra length of the pool, it was tough. Nonetheless, the Swiss Sharks put in fantastic performances and we got a lot of first places. Great job, Sharks! GOLD/DIAMOND LEAGUE On Friday 24 February, we organised the Gold League at the Hollandse Club, followed by a similar event on 3 March for the Diamond League at the Swiss Club. We took home a slew of medals and saw many improved timings. Well done, everyone.

Water polo is the perfect ball sport to play in this climate and a great way to meet new friends at the Club. Come and make a splash!
PARENT AND CHILD/BABY LESSONS Babies are no strangers to water as they’ve spent nine months submerged in the womb. Our infant classes are a great way to reintroduce your little one to an aquatic environment. Children have lots of fun building their water confidence through songs and games, while bonding with mum and/or dad. Submersion and personal survival skills are also practised when your child is ready. The main aim of this programme is for infants to be happy, ‘free’ and safe in the water. PROMOTION During the month of June, all new babies (6 months to 36 months) can join us for a free month of swimming lessons. Please drop us an email to book a free trial. NEWS AND VIEWS A new men’s ladder is ongoing via an online system, so now there is a male ranking at Swiss Club. Thanks, guys, for making it such a success. In March we had the 1st Junior tournament of the year. As usual, there are highs and lows and many emotional moments during kids’ competitions. We saw a mix of smiles, laughs, tears and disappointment. But in the end, it's all about sportsmanship. Sports provide many valuable and transferable life lessons – for example, always have fun and never give up!

Padel for the People! New padel coach Lucas de Miguel urges everyone to give padel a go. It’s an easy and enjoyable sport, especially if you’ve had some exposure to other racket sports. And, from the sound of things, padel is really catching on at the Club. DATES TO REMEMBER We will be starting a new Junior Training Programme on Mondays and Wednesdays at 3.30pm for kids from 6 to 8 years old; and from 4.30pm for kids from 8 to 10 years old. Hurry, as there are limited spots!
PADEL OPEN DAYS We had two Open Days on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 March. At 5pm on Friday, an Adults’ Beginners’ Group learned the basic techniques and movements. At 7pm, an Adults’ Intermediate Group tried their hands at some tactical play. A fun time was had by all.
PADEL INTEL Lucas shares some top tips…
On Saturday, kids of various ages came out to play padel. They adapted their tennis skills with ease, learning the bounces on simple glass and double glass.
As padel is played in couples, both players should move together. This means that we will always have one couple on attack (volley) and one couple defending (back line).
Since we have glass walls on the back and sides, I advise you to strive for as little bounce back as possible, so you will play most of the shots flat and some of them with slice.
The sport is based on patience and position, and has very few definitive power shots. However, it is such an easy sport that you can start playing as soon as you know the rules. Never mind your physical condition or age, since at amateur levels the sport is not demanding at all.
We will also be holding the first Swiss Club Padel Championship from 26 – 28 May, with three categories (Men’s, Ladies’ and Junior). During the last week of June and the two first weeks of August, we will be having a Padel Summer Camp. So, people, let’s play padel! INTERESTED IN PLAYING PADEL? SPOTLIGHT ON...
We spoke to the new padel coach, Lucas de Miguel, about the Mexican version of ‘mini tennis’ that has been offered at the Swiss Club since 2014.
at a high level, it rates as High Interval Training (HIT), since the majority of the movements are fast and furious.
ORIGINS OF PADEL “Padel started in 1969 in Acapulco, Mexico, when a rich guy created a ‘mini tennis court’ where his daughter could play without losing the ball,” explained Lucas. “Later he started playing with his friends from Argentina and Spain, with a little racket called a padel. A few years later, countries adopted the game, and the rest is history.” FAST AND FURIOUS Lucas explained that padel differs from tennis and squash not only in terms of the size of the court, but because it is generally an easier, less taxing game to play. Of course the higher the level, the more demanding it gets. In fact, when played
TEE FOR TRIVIA The chances of making two holes-in-one in a round of golf are one in 67 million. Good luck.
A LITTLE ABOUT LUCAS Lucas hails from Argentina, and started playing at the age of 13 when he moved to Brazil with his parents. His father, Maximo Castellote, is a famous padel trainer. Subsequently, Lucas started teaching at the age of 16, and was competing at high levels by the age of 18. A year later, he moved with his family to Madrid, where he lived for 11 years. He worked briefly in Japan for two and a half before coming to Singapore. Lucas is an internationally qualified competition trainer, children’s coach and tennis coach, certified by the Argentinian
Padel Association and recognised by the International Padel Federation. Please join us in welcoming Lucas to the Swiss Club. His passion for padel is contagious – and we hope you catch it!

Swiss School Celebrates 50 Years in Singapore On 2 May 1967, the Swiss School in Singapore opened its doors for the first time for a small group of 18 excited pupils. At the time, the kindergarten was located in the outer room of the former bowling alley. Today, fifty years later, the Swiss School proudly celebrates its golden jubilee. LOOKING BACK WITH FONDNESS Back in the day, lessons for the primary classes were held on the terrace of the clubhouse of the Swiss Club. The mandate of the Swiss School was to enable children to connect with the Swiss educational system and curriculum. The first two teachers, Marie-Therese and Werner Kaufmann-Sialm from Switzerland, arrived on a three-year contract with 1800kg of school material. “We were in our mid-twenties and thought we could move mountains and had the courage of a lion,” recalled Mrs. Kaufmann-Sialm. Indeed, the inception of the school in the 1960s would not have been possible without a spirit of adventure and pioneering. Connections back to Switzerland were difficult and cumbersome; there was only airmail (as opposed to electronic means of communication); and phone calls were prohibitively expensive. Certainly, not everybody could afford flights for holidays back to Switzerland; however, everybody was full of energy and enthusiasm to create the school. One year later, the school moved into its new building with proper classrooms. During the following years, the school grew and grew. Although there were
many farewells, even back then, luckily, there were even more families moving to Singapore as the economy and the role of Swiss businesses in the market advanced. Soon, the classrooms became crowded and additional buildings were needed. The original bungalow style was preserved in the new building, which suited the beautiful lush, green surroundings. HALF A CENTURY OF SWISS CULTURE AND EDUCATION For 50 years, SSiS has followed its original aim to provide a high level of education according to Swiss standards, while being an international school conducting classes in both German and English. In doing so, it has undoubtedly become an important pillar of the Swiss community in Singapore. The school’s openness to children and families of other nationalities and its various outreach programmes have promoted the Swiss culture and ‘Swissness’ in Singapore, serving as an important source of support for many families far away from home. In celebration of the jubilee, various activities will be held from 2 May 2017, over a period of 50 days. On 20 May 2017, from 4pm to 8pm, a fun-filled family event will be held on the Swiss School premises. The event is open to all families, interested

parties and friends. Please, join us to celebrate this momentous occasion for the school and our community! For more information about the jubilee activities, please visit http://www.swiss-school.edu.sg/

Meeting of the Council of the Swiss Abroad
The recent spring meeting was the last for many delegates, and saw us farewelling almost a third of the participants. Here is a summary of the issues raised and discussed. THANK YOU FOR THE VOTE OF CONFIDENCE I’d like to take this occasion to thank the Swiss pillars in Singapore for having re-elected me for the next four years. Feel free to contact me anytime. E-VOTING TRIALS AND DEPUTY DELEGATES Elsewhere, elections are ongoing in some countries. We are trialling E-voting in Mexico and Australia, which will be partly sponsored and meticulously observed by the Federal Government. Since we would like to adopt widespread electronic voting in the future, we hope that these two trials run smoothly. As participating in our Council is an expensive hobby (travel expenses cannot be claimed), we often have empty seats during our meetings. Some members from overseas only come once a year. Hence, the board presented a suggestion that delegations could elect deputies. This would introduce potential future delegates to the Council and hopefully lead to better attendance. Elections in some countries are already over, so deputies could be elected later. ON THE REGULAR AGM AGENDA As usual, we discussed regular AGM issues. The President’s report was unanimously approved and so were
26
the financial statements. Unfortunately, the budget for next year predicts a slight loss. As the Government is not willing to cover any loss, we must find more sponsors. Our long-time treasurer stepped down after having been more than 25 years on the Council and we elected a new one. A member of the Foreign Department made a presentation about ‘Switzerland and Europe after 9th February 2014’ (when the Swiss voted in favour of controlled/limited immigration). He entitled it ‘Mind the Gap’, as he also addressed Brexit and its unknown consequences for Swiss living in UK. The Hungarian delegate asked if we could take legal action against Postfinance for discriminating against Swiss living abroad by charging them higher fees. This is not possible under current law, but our parliamentarians suggested that they might make an effort to encourage a change in this postal law. Unfortunately, the way Swiss banks and postfinance treat their Swiss customers abroad is an ongoing issue and will not be solved in the near future. LANGUAGES AND PUBLICATIONS Another motion from Canada asked to accept the English Language as official language of ASR/CSA, in order to encourage and enable second generation Swiss abroad to participate.
Unfortunately, this will not happen, since delegates in the Council need to at least understand either German or French. We do not have the means for simultaneous translation into more languages and as all Government documents are in German, French, Italian or Romanche. Hence it is mandatory for our members to read and understand a national language. During the Discussion Forum, the topic of the ‘Swiss Review’ was once again raised. We save money by no longer printing the ASO/OSE Annual report and encourage everyone to install the revue app and read it electronically in order to save on postage and printing costs, which must happen if we are to continue to publish six issues a year. Though not everyone likes to read on a computer, the alternative would be to have only four issues a year, which would make the content even less up to date. Our next meeting takes place during the 95. Kongress of the Swiss Living Abroad, which will take place in Basel from 18 to 20 August. Everyone is welcome, details and inscription forms can be found on the website www.aso.ch. Article and photo courtesy of Sabine Silberstein E: Silberstein@aso.ch

A Tale of Two Artists
On Friday 19 May 2017, a ‘meet and greet session’ will be held from 7pm to 9pm with the two talented female artists behind an ongoing art exhibition at the Rifle Lounge. Come join us for an inspiring evening of art, a complimentary welcome drink and light bites. Admission is free.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS Carolyn Law graduated with her Masters in Fine Arts in 2012. She is the founder of ARThaus, a painting studio for art enthusiasts from all walks of life. For the past 15 years, she has been teaching both children and adults in various schools and her studio. Carolyn’s current works suggest the expression of self, the intricacies and complexities of one’s identity. The works exhibited are self-reflective and self-reflexive as she seeks to unravel all that makes up her identity. Her works also address today’s fast-paced society and questions the possibility of a better-appreciated life in contemporary city living. Carolyn dwells in the reconstruction of a symbol of wholeness and completion, an equal balance of the spectrum of colours, the spectrum of one’s identity is convoluted and complex but all to be appreciated. She pensively chooses her subjects and weaves together her philosophical beliefs and life experiences in every one of her paintings. In this exhibition, Carolyn presents five series of works that tie into this narrative of self-expression.

The Di Maio family, Members since January 2008, regularly spend their Friday evenings together at the Swiss Club. This delightful Swiss family of mum Isabelle, dad Sacha and three sons (yes, three sons!) can’t think of any better way to start their weekends together.
Happy Weekends
Begin at the Swiss Club for the Di Maio Family THREE SONS, NO WORRIES Sacha Di Maio is an Independent Asset Manager, and his wife Isabelle works in Human Resources for a real estate company. They had travelled extensively through Asia in the early years of their marriage, and enjoyed it immensely. So when the opportunity to travel to Singapore arose, they leapt at it. After Sacha came in October 2007, Isabelle joined him, with young sons Max and Theo in tow, a few months later. They joined the Swiss Club almost immediately.
We have peace of mind, knowing the boys can play in safety. Sacha Fast-forward almost ten years, and the Di Maio family includes Singapore-born Felix, now aged six – in addition to Max, now aged 12, and Theo, now aged 10. To say that Isabelle has her hands full would be something of an understatement. “We have peace of mind, knowing the boys can play in safety,” shared Sacha, who lets the boys enjoy their freedom in the spacious grounds. “We know they will come back when they are hungry,” added Isabelle, obviously speaking from experience. “The staff
know us all so well, and take great care of us. They know what to feed the boys.” FROM FOOD TO FOOTBALL The Di Maio family are big fans of the food at the Swiss Club, and frequent both Arbenz and Pergola. In addition to the weekly Friday evening family gatherings, Sacha and Isabelle often bring overseas guests to Arbenz, and Isabelle has conducted several successful corporate events at the Club. Avid athletes, the Di Maios all enjoy the sports facilities at the Swiss Club. In fact, all three boys learned to swim with aquaDucks at the Swiss Club, and have picked up most of their football skills at the Club. In particular, Sacha enjoys both tennis and padel, but now spends more time on the football field with his soccermad sons. Isabelle loves swimming and tennis, but is temporarily out of action following a skiing accident. She hopes to hit the courts soon.
We know they will come back when they are hungry. Isabelle Youngest Felix is a ‘frequent flyer’ in the playground. “I swing really high on the swing,” he shared, with obvious pride. He also likes to fill the dual role of ‘referee’ and ‘ball boy’ as his parents and brothers play tennis and padel.
Dining with the Di Maios Sacha recommends… the beef rendang (from a past promotion) and the beef kway teow Isabelle recommends… the weekly specials at Pergola and the tandoori dishes from the Indian corner Max recommends… the gourmet burger and salad bar Theo recommends… the salad bar and the bratwurst/veal sausages Felix recommends… the chicken rice (from the former menu), the pizza and all the desserts!
Towards the end of the interview, Max became increasingly chatty. He informed us that the Swiss Club grounds were full of ‘secret places’ waiting to be explored. His parents politely explained that his surge of input was an indication of his eagerness to conclude the interview and get down to the serious business of playing. You can’t hold a young explorer back. We concluded the interview with smiles on our faces – you could feel the love and the closeness among these model Members. Clearly, the family that ‘Clubs together’, stays together.

There’s More to There’s More to Mother’s Day... Father’s Day…
… than a bunch of carnations, breakfast in bed and a day off from housework and cooking. Here are some little known facts about its origins and traditions.
… than a new pair of socks, Dad’s favourite dinner and a bottle of his favourite tipple. For example…
HOW IT ALL STARTED…
BACK TO THE BEGINNING…
The modern holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated on 10 May 1908, when Anna Jarvis spoke for 70 minutes to the congregation at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. In 1914, the then-American President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honour mothers.
OTHER MOTHER’S DAYS…
In the United Kingdom, the precursor to Mother’s Day was the early Christian festival known as ‘Mothering Sunday’. This celebration fell on the fourth Sunday of Lent and was a time when the faithful would return to their ‘mother church’ – the main church in the vicinity of their home – for a special service. In Thailand, Mother’s Day is always celebrated in August on the birthday of the current queen, Sirikit. In Ethiopia, families gather each fall to sing songs and eat a large feast as part of Antrosht, a multi-day celebration honouring motherhood. The celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. Rhea was the ancient Greek goddess of fertility, and the mother of the gods Demeter, Hestia, Hera, Hades, Poseidon and Zeus. Cybele was her ancient Roman equivalent – a primal nature goddess worshipped with orgiastic rites in the mountains of central and western Anatolia. Over time, the myths surrounding the two became intertwined.
DID YOU KNOW…
According to tradition, white carnations are meant to honour the memory of deceased mothers while red and pink carnations honour those who are living.
The first Father’s Day celebration supposedly occurred on 5 July 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia. The story goes that Grace Golden Clayton suggested a special service for fathers to the pastor at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South. She was inspired by a mine explosion that had occurred a few months before, in the nearby community of Monongah, that had taken the lives of 361 men, many of them fathers. An alternative theory credits a woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd with the invention of Father’s Day. Her father, the civil war veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who had raised six children. More than six decades later in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a Congressional Act declaring Father’s Day to be permanently celebrated on the third Sunday in June all over the nation.
FATHER’S DAY ELSEWHERE
In Thailand, Father’s Day is celebrated on the King's Birthday. The celebration includes fireworks and acts of charity and honour, including the donation of blood and the liberation of captive animals. Ascension Thursday, 40 days after Easter, is also a Father’s Day celebration in Germany. Known as Vatertag, it is often celebrated with all-male hiking trips and copious drinking. In olden days, the beverages were conveyed in small carts or wheelbarrows, often adorned with birch and lilac branches. Today, men still organise walking and drinking trips.
FANCY THAT!
White roses are supposed to be worn in the lapel to honour a father who is deceased, and a red rose for a father who is living.
On behalf of all of us at the Swiss Club, Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Father’s Day to all mothers and mother figures, and to all fathers and father figures! 30
Q&A
THE KNOW-ALL
Local dining etiquette and the long list of numerous rules and regulations in this ‘fine city’ take some getting used to. But fret not, we have insider’s intel to help you assimilate!
FOR THE CULTURALLY CONFUSED
Q: At lunch the other day, I absentmindedly stuck my chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice, and my colleague widened her eyes in shock and waved her hands in horror. Why is this such a big no-no?
A: Never, ever place chopsticks upright in food, unless you are attending a funeral. Upright chopsticks in your bowl represent your tombstone, or impending death. Offering an elder a bowl of rice with chopsticks stuck upright is tantamount to wishing then an early grave.
Q: Is it true that in Singapore it’s illegal to chew gum, feed pigeons, walk around naked at home if you’re even slightly visible from outside your home – or are these merely ‘urban myths’ that have circulated online?
A: Yes, all the misdemeanours you mentioned are punishable by law. It is also illegal to: play a musical instrument in public if it causes annoyance to passers-by; fly a kite in manner that may be hazardous to traffic; sing obscene songs or ballads in public; spit in public; forget to flush the toilet; jaywalk… and so on and on and on. But when you think about it, the sum of all these small restrictions doesn’t undermine our quality of life, but enhances it. Let’s give thanks for clean, green, safe and orderly Singapore – pristine loos and spotless (spitless!) sidewalks included.
MY WORD!
cher
(pronounced cher) noun, slang - short form of ‘teacher’ - derived from direct contraction of ‘teacher’ - used with no disrespect, and often affection NOTE: has absolutely no connection to the French cher, an adjective meaning ‘dear’’ or ‘beloved’ (masculine form) For example: “Hey, cher! I didn’t understand a word of what you were saying.” “Sorry, cher. The dog ate my homework.”
