L’histoire d’Alexandro García est celle d’un jardinier uruguayen qui s’est mis à retranscrire ses visions éthérées à la suite d’une rencontre du 3e type – ou avistamiento – qu’il fit au bord d’une plage, la nuit, lorsqu’il était enfant.

Son œuvre, dans lequel affleure fréquemment la cosmogonie des civilisations précolombiennes, est à rapprocher de l’art médiumnique dans le sens où s’y exercent, selon lui, des forces dont il ne serait que l’instrument : « je suis un canal qui absorbe les messages du cosmos (….) mes œuvres sont les canalisations d’un temps nouveau, des messages spirituels psychographiques pour sauver les énergies de ce temps, de l’ancien et de l’avenir ».

Alexandro García, à l’instar d’un Vassilij Romanenkov, ne tire donc pas ses « visions » d’une conversation intime avec les défunts, comme c’est l’usage dans la nécromancie. Il est chez lui plutôt question de retrouver un âge d’or éthéré, un savoir extraterrestre flottant quelque par dans les limbes et capable de nous sauver de nos turpitudes.

Ses compositions psychédéliques méticuleuses, extrêmement codifiées, mêlent cités fantastiques et temples incas – comme en

De tous les créateurs qualifiés de visionnaires1 Alexandro García (Montevideo, 1970) occupe un lieu privilégié dans la production artistique uruguayenne : malgré sa jeunesse, il devient un point de repère dans le milieu des créateurs latino-américains hors du commun.

Son œuvre se présente comme un effort puissant et ordonné qui aspire à rendre compte d’un monde intérieur d’une complexité croissante. Si l’on peut affirmer que la plus grande partie des productions graphiques et des dessins d’Alexandro García provient de son expérience d’apparitions et de contacts avec des OVNI (objets volants non identifiés), la transposition sur le papier ne se fait jamais de façon mécanique : les images affleurent dans l’acte créatif comme le résultat de la réflexion et de l’assimilation rationnelle de ses expériences transcendantes.

Les paysages galactiques, les villes suspendues et labyrinthiques, les vaisseaux de ravitaillement et les êtres lumineux qui les dirigent, remplissent les feuilles à un rythme soutenu, lentement mais sûrement.

Il ne s’agit pas, cependant, d’une description littérale de ses visions cosmiques, mais d’une réinterprétation des processus psychiques qui

Elle intitula ses principales séries « Ñanduty »4, « Cosmique » et « Cités imaginaires ». Celles-ci s’accordent dans une chaîne abstraite resserrée, pléthorique de touches patientes et colorées qui accaparent toutes les zones du tableau et suggèrent une profondeur spatiale quasi insondable. Le développement organique de tâches et de voilures constitue un autre des traits distinctifs de l’œuvre de Magalí, dont la formation d’autodidacte fut nourrie de voyages dans le Lointain Orient et de pratiques naturistes. C’est ainsi que Cristali comme Herrera ont conçu des mondes visionnaires dans lesquels prédominent les formations organiques, « naturelles », et où la présence humaine (parfois surhumaine dans les pièces de Herrera) et celle de ses productions est supprimée ou à peine suggérée.

Et moi, je l’ai dessiné sans le savoir. »5 Dans cet extrait, l’artiste fait référence à ses premiers dessins, qui ont précédé de quelques années les explications fournies par un groupe de personnes familières des avistamientos, ces expériences mystiques d’apparition d’OVNI. La production de ces paysages « illuminés » (aussi bien au sens que nous donnons au terme depuis la conception rimbaldienne de la vision poétique, qu’à celui des manuscrits se heurtant à l’annotation silencieuse et au ban de la méditation monacale) a évolué petit à petit et s’est diversifiée vers de nouveaux espaces graphiques qui incluent dans certains cas des notes écrites et des poèmes.

Le parfait enchaînement de traits droits, qui dans ses premiers travaux suggère un certain élan automatiste, acquiert avec la maîtrise progressive de la technique une plus grande adresse et une polyvalence majeure. Après l’étape initiale de fort chromatisme généré à partir de procédés et de matériaux simples - le dessin sur papier avec des stylos et des crayons - surgissent d’autres formes plus dépouillées, en blanc et noir, avec une maîtrise du tracé plus sinueuse, ainsi que l’expérimentation sur de nouveaux formats et d’autres supports (muraux, livres artisanaux et livres d’artiste). intelligentes » et ses dessins peuvent être vus comme les lueurs conscientes d’une réalité qui va au-delà de la perception naturelle : ils remplissent la double fonction de carte stellaire et d’emblème (du changement d’Ère). D’un point de vue formel, le schématisme géométrique bigarré (lignes droites, pyramides, trapèzes, échelles, cercles, spirales) trouve un parallèle dans le syncrétisme culturel de ses croyances : les « présences » qui habitent ses dessins sont, dans l’exégèse d’Alexandro, des guides et des formes tutélaires de la spiritualité suprême. Elles conjuguent le savoir d’un passé lointain (comme la culture précolombienne maya) avec le futur proche de la vie dans l’univers. Elles constituent une critique du monde actuel et, en même temps, un avertissement sur le destin qui l’attend : « Selon la légende, les Guerriers de l’arc-en-ciel peupleront la nouvelle humanité. Et moi je suis un guerrier de l’arc-en-ciel dans le calendrier maya, je suis cercle. Ainsi, d’après les conjectures, certains de mes parents ou donnez-leur le nom que vous voudrez, viendront fonder la cinquième humanité. Ils viendront établir le contact en 2012. Cette année-là la connexion se fera entre deux temps et nous assisterons à la naissance d’une Ère nouvelle. Arriveront dans notre monde des êtres de toutes les croyances et de toutes les galaxies pour former la nouvelle

comme une brillante conjonction de ces deux techniques ou étapes - des étapes davantage émotionnelles que temporelles - qui rendent compte de sa consécration en tant qu’artiste. Si, au début, Alexandro se définissait comme un « canal qui absorbe les messages du cosmos », on peut désormais ajouter que, sans se contredire, il a poli et travaillé ses moyens de « canalisation ». Il poursuit l’étroite codification de ses tableaux, dans lesquels chaque couleur, chaque forme et chaque signe, fonctionnent comme une réponse singulière à une demande symbolique précise6.

Les changements d’échelle abrupts et les perspectives, avec des lignes de fuite croisées à la manière des Carceri de Piranèse contribuent à souligner la grandeur des dimensions tracées. Mais l’horror vacui qui dans ses premiers essais artistiques était une sorte de marque d’identité a cédé sa place à une exploration scripturale d’une plus grande amplitude et à des cadences plus subtiles : on relève certains tons clairs dans les villes fantastiques, des lagunes de couleur qui reviennent dans un équilibre tout aussi patient de la composition (chaque tableau peut exiger des mois de travail) mais non moins surchargé. Le registre allégorique de ses travaux visionnaires est mis en valeur par une maîtrise plus contrôlée de la technique de la ligne

et du dessin. Mais cela ne porte aucune atteinte à l’originalité de son don particulier : Alexandro entre dans un nouveau monde qui ne connaît pas de frontières - le soi même - et dont la voie d’accès s’offre au spectateur aussi généreuse que prometteuse.

The story of Alexandro García is that of a gardener from Uruguay who began to transcribe his ethereal visions following an encounter of the 3rd kind – or an avistamiento – that he had on the shore of a beach, at night, when he was a child.

His work, in which the cosmogony of pre-Columbian civilizations frequently comes up to the surface, should be compared to psychic art insofar as forces for which he is but an instrument, according to him, are at work there: “I am a channel that absorbs the messages of the cosmos […] my works are the pathways of a new era, spiritual psychographic messages for saving the energies from this era, from the old, and from the future.”

Alexandro García, like Vassilij Romanenkov, does not take his “visions” from an intimate conversation with the dead then, as is typical in necromancy. With him, it is rather a matter of recapturing an ethereal golden age, an extraterrestrial knowledge floating somewhere in limbo and capable of saving us from our turpitudes.

His psychedelic, meticulous, extremely codified compositions, blend fantastical cities and Incan temples – as if weightless or about to embark into the infinite cosmos – with the ballet of constellations that have come to greet them.

Truly the heir to magical realism, Alexandro García goes beyond that scope however and speaks to us of an elsewhere offered up to our projections and to the colonization of a new humanity: “we are not alone.”

Of the many Uruguayan artists described as “visionary”1, Alexandro García, born in Montevideo in 1970, is perhaps the most deservedly so: despite his relative youth, he is well on the way to becoming a key figure in Latin American Art Brut.

His oeuvre takes the form of a powerful, ordered attempt to translate an inner world of increasing complexity. While most of Alexandro García’s drawings are inspired by his encounters with UFOs, their transcription onto paper is never purely mechanical: the images arise during the act of creation itself, as the result of the artist’s rational consideration and assimilation of his transcendent experiences.

He fills the paper at a slow but steady rhythm, covering it with galactic landscapes, labyrinthine hanging cities, and cargo spaceships, piloted by luminous beings. These works do not represent a literal transcription of his cosmic visions, but rather a free interpretation of the psychic process involved, thereby giving them an individual symbolic and hermeneutic grounding on the page. This artistic process marks a clear conceptual and methodological distance with other visionary artists of decades past, such as Hélène Smith and

aspirations: Intricate constructions of the universe, Where Planet Earth is heading for, Cosmic Radiation, Sea spume on the waves of space, We are the remote descendants of the Big Bang3. She gave her major series the titles Ñanduty4, Cosmic, and Imaginary Cities. They form a tight abstract chain, with a plethora of painstaking, colourful dots that take over every part of the painting, suggesting the almost unfathomable depth of space.

Another characteristic trait of Magalí Herrera’s work is the organic development of the marks and expanses of colour; as a self-taught artist, she drew on her travels in the Far East and her naturist lifestyle.

Both Cristali and Herrera imagined visionary worlds featuring predominantly organic, “natural” forms, and where human (or occasionally superhuman, in Herrera’s case) presence is absent, or at best suggested in slight touches.

Alexandro García’s work has its roots in a different soil; it is without precedent among local self-taught artists. The intricate cities and brand-new worlds and sub-worlds that he depicts were originally “designed” by “intelligent forces”; his drawings can be seen as the conscious afterglow of a reality that lies beyond natural perception. They fulfil a dual role

as star chart and emblem of a change of era. In formal terms, the motley geometric arrangement of straight lines, pyramids, trapeziums, ladders, circles, and spirals find a parallel in the cultural syncretism of the artist’s beliefs: according to the artist’s own exegesis, the “presences” that inhabit his drawings are guides and tutelary forms of supreme spirituality. They combine knowledge of a distant past (such as preColumbian Mayan culture) and the near future of life in the universe. They express criticism of the state of the world today, together with a warning about the fate in store for mankind: “According to legend, the Rainbow Warriors will represent a new form of humanity. I am a Rainbow Warrior in the Mayan calendar, I am a circle.

Therefore, according to conjecture, some of my relatives, or whatever you wish to call them, will come to found the Fifth Humanity. They will come to establish contact in 2012. In that year, a connection will be made between two ages and we will witness the birth of a new era. Beings from all beliefs and all galaxies will come to our world to form the new humanity. And I have drawn this without knowing it.”5 The artist is referring here to his earliest drawings, produced a few years prior to the accounts given by a group of people

have polished and perfected his means of “channelling”. He continues to work on the strict codification of his paintings, in which every colour, shape, and sign acts as a singular response to a precise symbolic request6. The abrupt changes of scale and perspective, with crossing convergence lines like those in Piranesi’s Carceri, highlight the grandeur of the dimensions.

However, the horror vacui that was a constant feature of his earliest works has given way to a scriptural exploration that is both greater in its range and subtler in its cadence: the fantastical cities incorporate light-coloured tones and pools of colour, forming a balance as delicate and patient as the composition - each painting can take several months of work - but no less crowded. The allegorical nature of his visionary works is heightened by a greater mastery of technique in the lines and drawing. However, this in no way detracts from the originality of the artist’s unique gift. Alexandro García enters a new world without borders, the world of the self, inviting the audience to share his journey in works that are as generous as they are promising.

claiming to have experienced UFO visits.

His “illuminated” landscapes (using the term both in Rimbaud’s sense of a poetic vision and that of manuscripts that fall foul of silent annotation and are ostracised by monastic meditation) gradually evolved, diversifying to form new pictorial spaces that in some cases also included written notes and poems.

As the artist has improved his mastery of technique, the perfect chains of straight lines, which in his early works suggest a certain tendency to automatic drawing, have come to acquire greater dexterity and considerable flexibility. An initial stage of highly coloured works produced using simple techniques and materials (pens and pencils on paper) have given way to plainer forms in black and white, with a more sinuous use of lines. The artist also began to experiment with new formats and media, including murals, hand-made books, and artist’s books. In his most recent works, Alexandro García has returned to colour, forming a dazzling connection between the two techniques or stages - which are emotionally, although not necessarily chronologically, distinct and thereby marking his consecration as an artist. While he initially defined himself as a “channel absorbing the messages of the cosmos”, he can now be said to
