According to the reaction the starving cells begins to spiral & those circles (spirals) have a gravitational pull to them the larger they grow, in this way the spirals form spaces & domains. In the aggregation from cell to space the circles are constrained by their own domains; they morph to these constraints and a spatial pattern is formed.

Project Title: Imprint, In Search for Sacred Space Project Typology: Memorial - Thesis Location: Anza Borrego State Park, California

Description: The Thesis began by exploring the role of sacred space as a retreat from the everyday life, in which the program began as a cemetery. However it shifted when the research began to reflect an alteration occurring in a generation spending so much of their lives on the internet. A cemetery without bodies is interpreted as a memorial for the remainder of the thesis. Although cemeteries and memorials are still being used, the current architecture is not addressing contemporary methods of mourning for today’s society, where technology is sacred. This cemetery requires the body to make a journey and would no longer house bodies but memories. Therefore if this ‘cemetery’ stores no corpses it is simply a memorial, something designed to preserve the memory, the imprints of lives. The thesis arguesContextual for the importance of the body and the need to distance oneself Analysis from too much technology. The site purposefully had no ties to “sacred space” and was an architectural relic to hold on to the balance between life and death. A decommissioned set of train tracks in Anza Borrego State Park, California became the site introducing a journey, and the life and decay of a structure. With the proposed site of the Goat Canyon Trestle for this project, the thesis had a unique opportunity to embrace the journey. This journey consists of three architectural narratives inspired by 3 different stages in life- infancy, ego and transcendence.

According to the philosopher Micheal Washburn, there are three different stages of life. If this thesis was to narrate an architecture addressing death, the design of the memorial was going to address the three different stages of life. These diagrams represent the three life stages, in regards to designing for death. This is a design celebrating life and the imprint a person may have on another individual.

Grieving Rooms

Chapter 5

These rooms aim to encourage users to mourn, grieve, self reflect, contemplate, or simply meditate in solitude. They consist of wood exterior and concrete interior. Through the manipulation of light, rooms are intended to provoke a feeling of transcendence for individuals on site. The journey back to the memorial continues along a boardwalk for a final individual moment, this time intersecting the architectural relic, the Goat Canyon Trestle. At this intersection, between life and decay, is where the visitor is to let go of the sky lantern mentioned on page 28. The sky lanterns were to plant flower seeds where ever they landed within the canyon.

Description: With the capability to produce high quality visuals and a full set of drawings, I was brought onto various teams to assist and render different projects. Here I highlight different styles of rendering for one project as well as the construction set I put together with two others. For this set of drawings, I did the code analysis for the occupancy load and restroom count, I produced various types of plans, elevations, sections and details.

Description: Although I put together the drawings and developed interior elevations, sections, details and plans, I also developed a custom frit pattern for the glazing. After various studies, two were chosen, one at 30% Frit and the other at 50% frit. The frit pattern was inspired by the tutor timber framing of an existing structure next to the site, the Alumnae House at Vassar. Below are a few studies, followed by an enlarged elevation of the glazing and an image of the frit on glass. Thus concludes my portfolio, thank you for your time.
