Mouse Maze Dad listened as his daughter explained hoer her teacher had shown them a behavior experiment involving a mouse, several pieces of cheese, and a maze. The mouse had a choice at the end of the maze. He could turn left and push a button that would deliver a small piece of cheese and a harmless yet uncomfortable shock. Or the mouse could turn right and exit the maze. There he would receive a larger piece of cheese and no shock. Time and again, the mouse pushed the button to receive the small cheese and endure a shock. Finally, the teacher stopped the experiment to protect the mouse. “Daddy, why would the mouse endure pain for such a small piece of food?” Her dad thought for a minute and then told her that pushing the button was a sure thing for the mouse. Mice don’t have the ability to think of anything that isn’t real or visible.

A person can race for the rewards that sin promises—a higher grade, a better image, at bit of pleasure. But sinful words and actions come with a shock that separates us from God. To save us from our sins, Jesus came to earth. When He died on the cross, He suffered the punishment we deserved for our sin. Through faith, He gives us forgiveness and life eternal. Now our daily race leads us to a new goal. It is one of love and service to others. We may find this new maze hard because it doesn’t seem to bring instant rewards. But we can move forward because God Himself guides and strengthens us. Through His Words and Sacraments, He encourages us not to “grow weary of doing good.” By Joel Hoffschneider Taken from My Devotions Daily Readings for Young Christians March –May 2016 Vol. 58 No. 3 Copyright 2016 Concordia Publishing House 3558 S.
