VERSE of the Week: earth!.”(Psalm 96:1) Memorial Day Memorial Day is our nation’s reverent remembrance of the men and women who died while serving in our country’s armed forces, paying the ultimate sacrifice for protecting and serving the people, government, and freedom of the United States of America. The purpose of Memorial Day is therefore solemn and significant When Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day (as Memorial Day was first called) should be observed on May 30, 1868, he said: “We should guard [the soldiers’] graves with sacred vigilance. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.” Now picture the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery and the soldiers of the Army’s Old Guard who keep watch before that memorial night and

“Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the day, rain or shine, in heat or cold, every day of the year. That is “sacred vigilance.” How can we Christians, as citizens of the United States, honor the memory of those who have given their lives to serve our nation? We thank God for their dedication and sacrifice. We place wreaths, flowers, or flags at their graves. By our prayers for healing, generous gifts, and loving service, we show compassion for the surviving spouses and children, parents and family, friends and loved ones who continue to grieve and feel the pain of their loss. We confess our faith in God, the resurrection of the body, and the life of the world to come. And, with the help of God, we join those in our armed forces in preserving and working for peace so that war and bloodshed may cease to the ends of the earth. – Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel) David A. Paap, U.S. Army, Retired. The above article was written for our N&A by a seminary classmate. – Pastor Heggen

Upcoming Meetings and Events LWML is meeting on SATURDAY, JUNE 4th (please note date change) at 9:30am in the Fellowship Hall. We will finish our "Living A Chocolate Life" bible study. Please bring a chocolate treat to share, your MITES, and your Bible. Memorial Day Service: On Monday, May 30th at 9am there will be a short Memorial Day service in the church cemetery. In the event of rain, the service will take place in the Fellowship Hall. We hope to see you all there! The "Lead Like Jesus" study will begin the service on Sunday, May 15th (The Day of Pentecost), the day of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Through this study we will hopefully experience Jesus in a new and different way, as we grow to trust and follow Him, as we seek to come together and lead others to the Cross. To provide some flexibility to your summer schedule the 1st and 2nd Sundays of each month will be the same lesson, as well as the 3rd and 4th Sundays. Both May and July have a 5th Sunday on which there will just be fellowship time together as a church family. It is my prayer and desire that "Lead Like Jesus" will be the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in our journey to becoming effective servant leaders as we gather together to be fed and strengthened through God's Word and teachings. Get Involved Constitution and By-Laws Committee: The Church Council is seeking volunteers to be part of a committee to examine and propose changes to the Constitution and ByLaws. This informal group will report to the Church Council recommendations for changes to both the Constitution and the By-Laws. After Church Council consideration, the changes recommended may proceed through the approval process as outlined in the Constitution and By-Laws. If you would like to participate on the committee or have suggestions, please contact Kelly Callahan or let Pastor Hahn know.
The Trustees are looking for volunteers to help mow the church grounds. With enough helpers, each person may only have to mow about 4 times during the season. Most of the mowing is done with a large lawn tractor. Contact Jeff Aldinger for more info or to sign up to help.
