HISTORICAL AND GLOBAL AWARENESS Since the 1950s, the Montrose area has been home to a rich history of musical talents. From bars on Fourth Ward to Cezanne, these venues have hosted anyone from acoustic jazz artists to alternative acts.
In regards to the site, the site has been home to the first Sears-Roebuck store in Houston (1929) before it moved to its current location in Downtown. Then in the 1940s, it housed a temporary office building for Baylor College of Medicine before making yet another facelift in the 1950s to pave the way for Houston’s first storage business. Currently, Montrose is part of a developing master plan that includes creating a more pedestrian-accessed street with the addition of a light rails that runs from Allen Parkway towards the fine arts district.
The proposed concert hall site will create a “mini” arts district on Montrose that mirrors the fine arts district in that it will create a central location that people will come to see artists as if they were paintings in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
PRECEDENT RESEARCH: KRESGE AUDITORIUM, MIT Design Specifications:

Design Concept The intention of the design was to create a main public space that the other parts of the program would revolve around. Since the site was located near surrounding park and entertainment areas, the macro of the design was to create a building that was the center of those functions and you could start at the building and make your way north to Memorial Park or southward towards the arts district. From the macro, the program of the building then becomes the micro in that it utilizes the program to create a lobby space that accommodates both the school and concert hall visitors. Project Issues The main issue to be dealt with was that the front part of the site is in the 10-500 year flood plain. The fact that one side of the site is on Montrose, traffic in and out of the site would be a problem because of the density of traffic that goes through Montrose.

AIA HOUSTON CENTER ART AND ARCHITECTURE ANNEX Design Concept The intention of the design was to incorporate the buildings and spaces surrounding the project site, which was responding to the Hobby Center, Courthouse, Tranquility Park, and Bayou Place (where the AIA Houston Office is located). This project was my first design that I incorporated the use of Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. Because of the three major program spaces, I related those program elements to the surrounding spaces. Therefore keeping the public program spaces behind the line of trees on Bagby Street creating a natural covered plaza for places people can drink coffee and read outside. One of the existing features of the site was that it had an underground parking garage structure, with an entry on Capitol Street at Brazos Street. The garage served the Courthouse, Bayou Place and the Hobby Center. The concept of the project was to create a series of spaces that would become the gallery/display areas that would “weave its way through the building connecting all of the major program spaces.
