Wexford families hit with rent penalty There has been a demand for an increase in rent allowances payable in Co. Wexford just over two weeks after the latest rent allowance review was implemented at the end of June.

Following the revelation that the 7.2% increase granted in the county leaves the allowance for Wexford at the second lowest level in Leinster with only Offaly and Longford getting lower allowances. pressure is mounting on the government for another review..

The allowances in no way reflect the rental value of property in the county with North Wexford facing a particular problem.

The inadequacy of the new allowances has been illustrated

starkly by the revelation that a family with three children renting a house in Carnew just inside the Wicklow border can get an allowance of â‚Ź770 while the same family renting a similar property in Gorey, where rents are actually higher as a result of increased demand, would get just â‚Ź600 Councillor Joe Sullivan told a meeting of the Co. Council this week that the rent supplements being paid in Co. Wexford fell very far short of the market rates and he led a call on the Department of Social Protection to further review the rates as they applied to county.

Cllr. Malcolm Byrne said there were different housing markets in different parts of the county

and rents were much higher than the allowances.

But Cllr Fionntan O'Suilleabhain, while supporting the call for the increase in the rent allowance wanted it linked to a capping of rents. He said without rent certainty landlords would increase rents if there was an increase in the supplement.

But Cllr. Sullivan rejected this suggestion saying there was rent certainty in place with landlords unable to increase rents for two years under legislation enacted at the end of last year.

A majority of councillors voted to support the call for an increase in the allowance but rejected the idea of linking it to a cap on rents.

Wexford 'No' to Border Poll Members of Wexford Co. Council have rejected a bid to have them formally back a call for the establishment of a border poll following the Brexit vote in the UK. Cllr. Fionntan O'Suilleabhain proposed that the Poll be held on the basis that people in the North had re-

jected Brexit and as a result of the implications of the overall vote.

He said the people of the North had to be given the opportunity to express their view.

But a majority of councillors said now was not the correct time for a poll

Cllr George Lawlor said it would be necessary to see the actual implications of the vote first and a vast amount of discussions would have to take place before any poll Cllr John Hegarty said the idea was rushed and now was not the right time for a poll

Another chapter in the commemorations of 1916 one hundred years on took place on Saturday last when a new monument was unveiled at O'Hanrahan Train Station in Wexford town in remembrance of the 1916 leader Micheal O'Hanrahan, who was a native of New Ross. Mayor Frank Staples presided at the ceremony with Pearse Hanrahan, a grand nephew of Micheal laying a wreath and addressing the attendance. Another grand nephew Harry Hanrahan and a grand niece Deirdre Lawlor also attended.

News Co. Council Diary When taking cannabis is like eating the grape but not drinking the wine A man called Adrian Hogan sat in the public gallery at Monday's July meeting of the Co. Council. Nothing unusual in that but he received a special welcome from the Chairman, Paddy Kavanagh, which was a bit unusual.

Paddy told the meeting that Mr Hogan, a Limerick man who recently retired was now in the

process of attending a meeting of every Co. Council in the country and collecting a letter from each Chairman recording his attendance.

He intended to put all the letters together in a time capsule to be opened by his relatives at some long distant date.

He probably left the Wexford Chamber on a bit of a high as cannabis was top of the agenda. With one of the councillors wearing a 'legalise medical cannabis' tee shirt and the three other members of the public who had seats in the gallery similarly attired, Mr Hogan was probably mildly surprised that the dominant issue in local government in Wexford was cannabis and its uses.

But given the high profile the drug was receiving at the meeting he was provably equally surprised that so many councillors publicly declared how little they knew about it..

Not qualified to make a decision on that, declared Larry O'Brien, 'I know nothing about it' said Robbie Ireton and so it went on.

It was just one of the components in the Cannabis which she wanted to legalise to help people who suffer in terrible pain but could get relief if this was legalised.

To illustrate the point for those less knowledgeable than herself on these matters she explained it was like eating a grape but not drinking the wine.

And her argument initially seemed to be getting traction with Malcolm Byrne, Davy Hynes and George Lawlor all indicating support for what she was trying to do.

Then in stepped Larry O'Brien, declaring that he had no letters after his name which would qualify him to make a decision on the matter and he wasn't wearing the tee shirt either, he added.

Then Keith Doyle spoke about the issue not being black and white, Tony Dempsey had reservations and John Hegarty said Deirdre appeared to be suggesting that the medical remedy she was talking about

Restore Child Payments Members of the Co. Council have voted unanimously to call on the Social Protection Minister to restore the One Parent Family payment in respect of all dependent children of school going age which was cut by the previous government.

SF praise for Minister A Sinn Fein councillor has praised the Minister for Justice for the implementation of Part 4 of the Charities Act which enables the Charity Regulator to carry out statutory investigations on Charities.

Cllr Johnny Mythen had a motion before Monday's Co. Council meeting called on the Minister to take the action but before he could move it she had already implemented that part of the act.

News No increase in Wexford house prices The price of an average three bedroom semi detached house in Wexford has remained flat at €140,000 in the last three months, according to a national survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance.

The REA Average House Price Index concentrates on the sale price of Ireland's typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an up-to-date

picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide.

“The last few weeks has seen a slow down in supply of property coming to the market and this will see upward pressure on prices in the short term,” said Robert McCormack from REA McCormack Corrish.

A nationwide supply

shortage has fuelled a rise of over 2% in the price of the average house in the last three months, with the majority of counties in the State recording price increases in Quarter Two this year, the latest Real Estate Alliance Average House Price Survey found.

However, it is the lack of supply of suitable properties in a scarce market that has caused

these rises, exacerbated by the effect of would-be commuters moving ever further from Dublin to acquire affordable homes.

The average three bed semi nationally now costs €195,361, an increase of over €4,000 (+2.18%) since the end of March. This is a rise of 4.49% against the same time last year.

Phil Murphy Weekend in Bannow The village of Carrig-onBannow in South Wexford is the venue for five days of music, song, dance and a lot of craic next week when it hosts the annual Phil Murphy Weekend.

Sinn Féin's Johnny Mythen is calling for an immediate statement from the Minister of Health on the status of accident and emergency services in Wexford General Hospital.

According to reports in the Sunday's Business Post, there are nine hospitals around the state facing a permanent cut in emergency trauma services, under new plans it claims are being drawn up for the health service.

What this would mean for County Wexford is that

Wexford General would no longer be able to treat patients who have been in car crashes or had serious falls and have head injuries, broken limbs and major wounds. This can only have a negative impact on survival rates for those injured in car crashes or who sustain significant traumas.

The Minister needs to immediate address these claims and unequivocally support the continued provision of these services in Wexford, said Cllr Mythen.

The

New Mayor's family occasion It was rather ironic that Wexford's new mayor, Frank Staples, should speak about his own depression and make the provision of improved Mental Health services a top priority for his term when he was elected recently.

Frank got the job as a result of the vacancy created by the tragic death of Fianna Fail councillor Fergie Kehoe earlier this year.

There has been an outpouring of support for the new Mayor since his election with everyone willing his health to stay strong as he navigates his way through a busy political year.

The election itself saw one of the biggest crowds in years gather at the Arts Centre with the Fine Gael organisation celebrating their first Borough District Mayor and half the parish of Ballymore/Mayglass coming to town for the night Even the local Parish Priest, Fr. Murty Byrne, was on hand to give his blessing to the occasion But pride of place on the night went to two of the new Mayor's aunst, who are aged ninety and eighty and his mother-in-law. It has been a bit of a standing joke in Gorey where local councillor Anthony Donohoe has spent the best part of a year trying to have the bus stops at Gorey and Camolin upgraded.

In recent times Paddy Kavanagh has taken up the case of the bus stop outside Wexford Hospital. He wants it upgraded with a shelter and a seat following representations from members of the public.

Of all the bus stops in the county this is the one which most needs shelter because it is used by people who have attended hospital appointments but there is no sign that it is to get any

priority. Instead it is just part of the normal programme.

Recently the absolute importance of upgrading this stop was brought home to me when I saw an elderly woman and possibly her son, walking from the hospital towards the Stop. He was carrying a chair so that the woman could rest while waiting for the bus.

It is a pity that some of the people who make decisions on these matters do not come into the real world.

I wonder if we could interest Japanese in new potatoes

I was taken last week by a story from Japan about a bunch of grapes which sold for 1.1 million yen, that's more than â‚Ź9,000. Yes nine thousand euro for a bunch of grapes.

The bunch contained about thirty grapes and were the first of the season. They are the Ruby Roman variety, if you are interested, not that you'd be likely to pick up a bunch to cheer up someone in hospital, I'd say they'd prefer the money instead.

Anyway it appears the

Japanese are always very keen to get the first produce of the season although it seems they don't always pay quite as much as this for a bunch of grapes.

Imagine if we could get them to take a similar interest in new potatoes. Ryanair could organise special flights over and Wexford Bus could take them from the Airport on special tours of Curracloe, Carne and Bannow where they could even dig the new potatoes themselves to add to their experience.

As they left the field they could hand over a couple of million yen for each bag of the early season produce. If we could get this to take off we could wave goodbye to the IDA and their advance factories.

Potatoes could be the new gold and then we could extend it to strawberries. In think we should send a group of Co. Councillors on a junket , sorry fact finding trip, to Japan to get the ball rolling.

New season potatoes will start appearing on shopping lists and menus this week, as growers in Wexford start to harvest the first ‘Queens’ crop of the year. To mark the start of the new potato season, Bord Bia is launching 20 new summer recipes.

The first crop is two weeks later than usual due to colder temperatures in the spring and consumers in Ireland are expected to buy 20,000 tonnes of Queens over the coming months.

Council provides more Beach Wheelchairs Wexford County Council has extended its award winning Beach Wheelchair Initiative which provides access to Wexford’s renowned beaches for people with disabilities and mobility issues.

In July 2015, the County Council’s first beach wheelchair was successfully introduced at Curracloe Beach with the support of the local well known Curracloe Surf Shack. Wexford County Council further extended the Beach Wheelchair Programme to Rosslare Strand, teaming up with the Rosslare Community Sports Centre to provide these much sought after facilities for Rosslare Strand.

Now the innovative initiative has been extended to a number of other popular beaches around the county, namely Morriscastle, Duncannon and Carne. In each of these locations, the Beach Wheelchair facilities have been made possible through “on the ground” partnerships with Lawlor’s Shop, Carne Beach Caravan Park and Duncannon Water Sports Centre respectively.

In addition, plans are at an advanced stage to provide similar facilities at Courtown Beach later in the summer.

Wexford County Councils Access Officer Caroline Horan described the extension of the Beach Wheelchair Initiative as “a significant step in service provision for people with a disability ”, adding “This initiative allows people with

disabilities and mobility issues access to and enjoyment of what is truly Wexford’s most outstanding natural amenity – our beaches”.

The beach wheelchair’s specially designed wheels allow it to travel across the sandy beaches with ease. For many people with a disability, the beach wheelchair provides the opportunity to enjoy what most people take for granted a day at the beach and a dip in the sea!

Wexford is also proving to be “the Model County” as several other local authorities around Ireland, having learned of the initiative, are now seeking to follow Wexford County Council’s example and provide similar facilities at their own popular beaches.

The Beach Wheelchair Initiative is credited with helping Wexford County Council recently achieve the coveted Council of the Year Award and being recognised as “Wexford the Model County for Accessibility” While use of the Beach Wheelchairs is free of charge, prebooking is recommended. Lifestyle Wexford Festival call for Extras Although it’s the middle of summer, the 65th Wexford Festival Opera is just around the corner and this year the Festival is looking for 6 men (over 18 only) to perform as ‘extras’ or ‘supernumeraries’ for the upcoming opening production of Herculanum.

Those interested are invited to come along to the National Opera House on Wednesday, 27 July at 7pm for an information evening. Director of Artistic Administration, Nora

Cosgrave, Assistant Company Manager, Nicky Kehoe and Production Coordinator, Ray Bingle will be in attendance to discuss the production and answer any questions that anyone may have about participating as an ‘extra’.

No singing or acting skills are necessary, but dedication and an ability to learn staging is required. The information evening will last approximately one hour.

Drama Group launch season with Auditions for Earnest Wexford Drama Group members and friends gathered last Friday night in The Fusion Café to launch their 2016/ 2017 season and an exciting line up was announced.

2016 marks the 50 th Anniversary of this group and members were in jubilant form as they heard the plans for the upcoming season.

It all kicks off with the Brian Friel classic “Philadelphia Here I Come” which opens at Wexford Arts Centre on Thursday 28 th July. Director Stephen Byrne, speaking at the launch, said that rehearsals were going excellently and it was shaping up to be a wonderful production.

The group then announced that their October, Opera Festival production would be the hilarious period comedy “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde.

This production will be directed by drama group Chairperson Carol Long and auditions take place next Sunday 17 th July at 2pm in The Friary Hall, Wexford .

Auditions are open to all, with Wexford Drama Group always on the lookout for new talent.

Next up on the night was Paul Walsh who was announced as the director for the group’s entry for the Amateur Drama Circuit of Ireland next year. Paul will

direct “Portia Coughlan” by Marina Carr which will be performed in Wexford in February 2017. Next year will mark the ten year anniversary of Paul winning best director in this competition when he directed “By the Bog of Cats” also by Marina Carr to second place in the national finals, so hopes are high to go one better this time.

The group also unveiled plans for a celebration night in November to mark its 50 th Anniversary.

All in all it’s going to be another very busy season for the hard work group from Wexford Town.

How to make the most of this great day out This Thursday sees the 67th Bannow/Rathangan Show and the event has come a very long way since the first one was held in the middle of the last century. Now the Bannow Show is the greatest day out for people from all over Co. Wexford, both town and country dwellers who converge on the South Wexford site which really does provide something for everyone.

Of course the thousands who attend the Show will come not just from Co. Wexford but from many parts of Ireland.

Every year the hardworking committee undertakes new initiatives

aimed at making the event even more enjoyable for visitors.

There is so much to see that you would need to make your way to the site early in the morning if you are to have any chancing of taking in everything. Indeed, no matter what time you arrive it will be a tall order to catch everything this great day has to offer. You'll need to have a plan and stick to it if you are to get the best from this great day out From livestock to vintage machinery, modern machinery to dog shows, puppet shows to cookery demonstrations, fashion events to horse and pony classes its all here

on this massive site at Killag, Duncormick, which is not far from Kilmore Quay.

As already mentioned you will need to be an early bird, not just if you are to have the time to enjoy as much of this event as possible, but if you want to follow the horse and pony classes you will need to be on the grounds at 9am.

That's the scheduled start time for the Dressage Classes, with the judging of the Pony Classes commencing half an hour later.

Show jumping is always a big attraction at the Show and the various classes here jump off at 10.30am

And so it rolls on with the judging of the young handlers in the cattle section at 11am followed by the judging of the Cookery, Crafts, Flowers and Photography at 11.30.

The Judging of the Cattle and Goats takes place at mid-day which time you will be feeling a bit hungry if you have been around from 9am Now might be a good time to take a break at one of the many eating establishments dotted around the site, but don't take long because the Sheep Dog trials, always a joy to watch, get underway at 12.30pm and there's a Tae Kwon

Do Display by the Ballymitty Club in the Dog Show Ring at 1pm.

They better be finished their antics within the hour because the Dog Show takes over at 2pm.

Later in the day the parade of Vintage Machinery takes place at around 4pm, depending on when the three year old horse final concludes.

And all this is just in the main arena. Somehow between all these events you'll have to take in the events in The Courtyard and pay a visit to the Food Village as well.

And of course there are the many, many, many trade stands also to

take in.

They will be selling everything you could imagine, and even some things you probably didn't imagine even existed.

Throughout the day you bump into olds friends and new, neighbours, people you see almost every day and those who you may not have encountered since you last visited the show twelve months ago.

Get to the Show early With the huge numbers attending the Show each year the advice from the organisers and Gardai is to arrive early to avoid the congestion. The Show will be well signposted

and all routes and make sure to obey the Gardai and Stewards on duty. They are there to help you. This year there is a new entrance to the Show grounds from the

Baldwinstown Road. Despite the big crowds everything is so well organised that delays are kept to a minimum but is still best to leave plenty of time for the journey.

One of the big attractions on the day is the 'Food Village' which has grown in popularity and importance in recent years. It provides an opportunity for local producers to showcase their products before a huge audience but it is also the location for a variety of Cookery Demonstrations and competitions.

Events here start with a Cookery Demonstration from Gopal Kawendar of the

Silver Fox at 11.45am and this is followed by the main event of the day in the Food Village, the Co. Wexford Secondary Schools cook-off 2016 which takes place over three stages before the results are announced in late afternoon.

The cook off is a very keenly contested event with a large number of entrants all battling hard for the top prize.

Supporting festivals and events across Co. Wexford

International cast of tutors for this year’s Art in the Open Arts from all over the world are on their way to Wexford for this year’s Art in the Open festival, which takes place from Sunday 24 th July to Monday 1 st August.

This year the festival has incorporated The Three Sisters region to present Europe’s largest Plein Air Festival from the three counties of Wexford, Waterford and Kilkenny. The Three Sisters are bidding to bethe 2020 European Capital of Culture in a tight race against Galway and Limerick.

The festival offers six stunning locations to choose from; Bal-

lymore Demesne, Inistioge, Tintern Abbey, Passage East, Curracloe and of course, Wexford Town.

This year there’s an even more exciting line-up of International tutors for workshops and demonstrations on site each day during the festival.

Art in the Open are offering 18 Workshops with an international cast of tutors; Grahame Booth (NI), Ned Mueller (USA), L ena Rivo (Portugal), John Dinan & Paul Maloney (IRL), M arc Dalessio (Croatia), Vicki Norman & Roger Dellar & Claudia Araceli (UK)

and Natalia Dik (Russia).

Booking is at an all time high with nearly 90 artists already signed up to paint the stunning landscapes of Ireland’s South East. Artists to date are travelling from twelve countries including Russia, Slovenia, United Arab Emirates, Portugal and of course the UK & the US to name just a few.

The festival offers a variety of landscapes including harbour villages, coastal regions and country houses, etc. to highlight the variety of beautiful painting options for our artists.

One of the highlights each year is the August Bank Holiday Saturday ‘Charity Quick Draw’ which will take place in Wexford town centre. Last year this fun event raised €1,712 for The Windmill Therapeutic Unit which offers services for adults with special needs. This year’s ‘Charity Quick Draw’ proceeds will go to Wexford Marine Watch – a voluntary organisation which provides Suicide Prevention Patrols along Wexford Quays, Estuary and Harbour, the first of its kind in Ireland.

Other activities throughout the festival will include the midweek barbecue, life drawing sessions and an art lecture at the awarding winning National Opera House.

The finished work will be exhibited on the August Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday in Wexford to give everyone a chance to few the remarkable work produced by those taking part in the event.

Art in the Open has become a very successful and popular even since it started relatively modestly. The images of artists dotted around various locations around county Wexford and beyond has proved a big hit with locals and visitors alike.
