Art kicks off festivals The appearance of artists at various locations across the county this week provided the signal that Wexford's great summer of festivals was underway..

The Art in the Open Festival, which attracts artists from all over the world to Wexford began at the weekend and continues until the Bank Holiday.

The sight of artists on the streets, quayside or in the country painting various scenes has become a big attraction in recent years and they generate huge interest from both locals and visitors.

With concerns that Brexit and the weakening value of sterling could put a damper on tourist numbers from the UK in the months ahead the tourist industry

in Co. Wexford will be bracing itself for the August numbers.

Holiday bookings are usually made some time in advance so this year is not expected to be adversely affected. Nevertheless traders will be keeping a close eye on the spending patterns of UK visitors over the next few weeks.

The county is going all out improve the tourism product with the aim of attracting more visitors but in particular to convince those who do visit to return at a later date.

The Market House Festival in Gorey is the headline attraction across the county this weekend, while Enniscorthy stages the RockinFood festival over the three days of the holiday weekend, while the Leo Carthy

News Anger as Council attempts to sell off prime housing site A decision by senior executives of Wexford Co. Council to put a prime residential building site close to the centre of Wexford town up for sale at a time of one of the worst housing crises in the county's history has sparked a furious reaction from local councillors who were not consulted in advance about the proposed sale.

The site is at the end of the town's Parklands housing estate and borders Redmond Park. The 1.4 acre site went on the market recently.

But at a meeting of the local Municipal District Council there was a furious reaction to the move.

Leading the charge against the sale was Labour councillor

George Lawlor who said the site was ideal for the construction of homes for the elderly given its proximity to the town centre and Redmond Park.

He criticised the officials saying that in this instance they had made the wrong decision and he would oppose it.

Several other councillors including Tony Dempsey, Ger Carthy and Deirdre Wadding also spoke out against the sale.

Cllr Davy Hynes said the people in Co. Hall were not paying a blind bit of notice to what the members were saying and their views were being ignored..

However, his suggestion that the members had no power was challenged by Cllr. Lawlor

who said that in this matter the members had absolute power because any sale could not go through without the approval of the councillors.

Now the members of the Borough District are to unite with a motion opposing the sale at the next meeting of the Co. Council.

They want the land taken off the market and developed instead for homes for the elderly.

When Cllr Deirdre Wadding expressed concern about being too specific on what type of social housing should be built on the site Cllr Lawlor said if these units were built on this site it would free up properties in other areas for families

Government should match new EU funding for farmers - D'Arcy Deputy Michael D'Arcy has said that the Government should consider providing matching funds to supplement a new EU deal worth €11.1 million to Irish farmers.

“A new aid package for the EU agriculture sector, with particular emphasis on the dairy sector, was agreed this week. Ireland is to receive €11.1m million in the package, which is great news for Irish farmers.

“I firmly believe that the Government should now provide matching funding to supplement this deal, in much the same way as we did last year when the Government matched the EU’s allocation of approximately €13m in emergency funding for dairy farmers.

“Dealing with price volatility is a major priority for the Government and it has been a difficult time in this regard for

farmers, particular dairy farmers.

“Increasing this European Commission aid through matching funds, will expand its reach and help a lot more farmers than initially envisaged. I will be bringing this proposal to the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed, in the hope of a positive outcome that will allow us to assist as many farmers as possible.”

€10,000 boost for Fr. Leo Last Thursday Bishop Denis Brennan hosted a coffee morning at Bishop's House in aid of Fr. Leo Staples' Bobleo Children's Home charity. The Home is for children with special needs in Kenya and it was established by Wexford native Fr. Leo Staples who is a missionary priest.

Fr. Staples is back in

Wexford at the moment and the Bishop took the opportunity to host the fundraising event at his home. It was also the occasion for the presentation of a cheque to Fr. Leo representing the proceeds of various events which have been held to support him around the county over recent months.

Wexford Co. Council workers sprung into action at the scene of a serious accident in North Wexford and had cut back the overgrowth which had blocked out the Stop sign at the junction even before the ambulance had left the scene.

The incident happened at The Rock Cross which is north of Gorey town when a UK motorist drove straight across the junction without stopping.

Cllr. Anthony Donohoe, who raised the issue at a meeting of Gorey Municipal District Council, said there was no halt line at the junction

and the matter had not been attended to despite being raised by councillors on several occasions. And he pointed out that the Stop sign could not be seen because the ditch had grown out over it.

On this occasion the lady driving the car was not familiar with the junction and drove straight through it.

When Director of Services Annette O'Neill raised the possibility that the overgrown Stop sign might not have been the cause of the accident Cllr.

Donohoe pointed out that Council employees were on the scene immediately cutting

back the ditch to bring the sign back into view again,.

Wexford councillor Fergie Kehoe and former Mayor Joe Ryan got a little promotion at the weekend from the Sunday Times. The paper carried a report on general election pestering and used a pic of posters on Wexford Quays featuring Ryan and Kehoe among others, saying that they had been contestants in the 2011 general election.

But of course they were not candidates in that contest and the image was taken from the 2014 local election campaign.

News Possibly, maybe, perhaps,---- how Council answers members’ questions A new system introduced by Wexford Co. Council to answer queries from members of the public has had a poor start with vague and incomplete answers issued to Council members of the Gorey District where it was launched.

And Co. Secretary Pat Collins admitted that if they were having this level of difficulty dealing with the question from just eight councillors in

Gorey the system had quite some distance to go before it could be rolled out to answer all the questions from members of the public.

At a meeting of the Gorey Council Malcolm Byrne was the only councillors to give the new system an unqualified welcome.

But there were examples of very unsatisfactory answers from John Hegarty and Mary

Farrell while Fionntan O'Suilleabhan said he still used the telephone and had not adopted the new email system yet.

But John Hegarty was less than impressed with some of the answers he received and he gave an example of asking when the street sweeper might clean a particular North Wexford village.

No magic wand to solve housing As the row over the alleged lack of priority which Wexford Co. Council is giving to the provision of housing in North Wexford members have stopped just short of issuing a summons to Chief Executive Tom Enright to travel to Gorey to explain himself following the intervention of the Director of Services for the area who questioned the wisdom of such a move.

Malcolm Byrne had said there was no evidence that the Council was giving any priority to the area or that the Ex-

ecutive understood the problem and he believed that both the Chief Executive and the Housing Director should be called to a meeting in Gorey to explain themselves.

Cllr John Hegarty said that despite the problems which were clearly identified in Gorey the area was still bottom of the list in terms of allocations this year and repairs.

This did not indicate any priority for the area, he said.

But Councillor Robbie Ireton said no one could wave a magic wand and solve the

problem because no houses worth talking about were being built.

She said a submission needed to be forwarded to the Council's Special Housing Committee to make sure North Wexford's case got full priority when the new housing policy is approved.

No Entry---visitors forced to turn back from top beach Many visitors who travel from parts of the midlands to Co. Wexford to enjoy a day at the seaside are turning straight back from one resort because traffic gridlock bars their entry to the beach.

Morriscastle is one of the leading beaches in the county but there is growing concern that problems with the road access to the resort could result in a tragedy.

Local councillor Mary Farrell said in the event of an accident emergency services would not be able

to get to the beach.

She said there was complete traffic chaos on the road to Morriscastle and it was so badly blocked up on occasions that people, some of whom had travelled from as far away as the midlands, just turned around and left the area.

Cllr Anthony Donohoe said land should be acquired from a local farmer to make a proper car park in the area.

The beaches were the county's biggest asset and they needed to be supported and promoted.

The Avenue job that goes on and on and on in Gorey It's an never ending job and now with the warm weather people are being covered in dust as contractors continue to occupy the Avenue in Gorey.

Its a job that has gone on and on and on and now there is concern that when the expensive refurbishment works are completed there will be no cycle lane on The Avenue.

When councillor Anthony Donohoe raised the issue of the lack of cycle lanes he was cautioned that any attempt to put in lanes at this stage would delay the finish of the work.

However, given the slow the pace of the work to date

this was not something that worried Anthony. He said that they way it was going on

he wondered would it ever be finished--------cycle lanes or not.

News Anger over failure to highlight those convicted of roadside dumping Roadside dumpers beware Big Brother is watching you.

Wexford Co. Council has installed more and better cameras to detect illegal dumpers on rural roads and already this year eight people have been fined for the offence.

Cllr. Barbara Ann Murphy welcomed the news of the prosecutions and said dumping continued to be a serious problem with all the good work done by workers on the Gateway scheme in cleaning up roads undone in some areas.

Director of Services John Carley declared that he was absolutely determined to take the war to the dumpers who he said were damaging the environment and posing a threat to our tourism and business interests.

Many more cameras had been installed in various locations, he revealed. And he said the cameras were now better and more effective.

He also revealed that two had been discovered and put out of action but this would not deter the local authority. The

cameras were relatively cheap, he revealed and would-be replaced.

Cllr.Keith Doyle said ways of publishing pictures of those caught on camera should continue to be pursued.

There are fears that until Data Protection laws the Council is prohibited from publishing such images.

However, Cllr Doyle insists that a way must be found around these difficulties and the images published on the same basis as the Gardai publish CCTV images on Crime-

line.

Mr Carley said that before the Council goes to the Data Protection Officer for a determination they wanted to have all the processes in place and 'all the duck in a row'.

At a meeting of the Gorey Municipal District Council Cllr. John Hegarty was critical of the failure of the Council to publicise the names of those convicted of the offences. They should be put up in capital letters, he suggested

Brexit may damage Wexford/Wales links Organisations in Wexford will have to work hard on the relationship between this county and Wales if the links which have been built up over the years are to be maintained in the post Brexit era.

There is concern that following the departure of the UK from the EU there will be a funding void for joint infrastructural programme which are currently funded by the Union.

Projects already in place or committed under the

Intereg Programme will come to an end in two years and at the moment it is not known if there will be anything to replace it.

Director of Services John Carley told a meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council that it would be important to maintain the links with people across the water. He pointed out that there would be advantages for Wales in keeping the contact because it would provide a link for them to Europe.

Templeshannon plan underway The plan to bring life to the Templeshannon side of Enniscorthy on the east side of the river is about to swing into action.

Consultants charged with bringing forward a plan for the area which has suffered economic decline in recent years have been appointed with a brief to come up

The consultants are to meet councillors to discuss potential plans in September but in the meeting they will have discussions with the stakeholder in that part of Enniscorthy on the potential path forward.

News Bid to get compensation for 'hard' water damage Councillors in Wexford have launched a new bid to get compensation for households who have suffered loss as a result of so called 'hard' water being delivered to their homes from the Fardystown supply.

A meeting of the Wexford Borough District Council

heard the bill for some people ran in to thousands of euro with heating systems being destroyed and floors having to be dug up to carry out repairs.

For years people getting the Fardystown supply have suffered problems with domestic appliances and some of the solutions which had to

be put in place cost up to €1,000 per house.

Cllr. George Lawlor, a long time campaigner on the issue proposed that all households receive State compensation for the damage and he agreed that the compensation should be retrospective.

However, he was forced to defend his position following suggestions from a number of his colleagues that something should have been done about the problem when Labour were in power.

Supporting the motion Cllr Mick Roche agreed that people had suffered heavy losses and should be compensated but said it was a bit late for Cllr Lawlar to be making the suggestion now that he had left government.

Cllr. Ger Carthy said it was a pity the Labour man did not get action on the issue when he was 'at the centre of power' But Cllr. Lawlor insisted that he was more active than anyone else for several years.

Co. Wexford did not receive a single euro last year to provide traveller accommodation despite the fact that the county has a higher than average number of travelling families.

At a meeting of the Wexford Borough District Council Cllr Deirdre Wadding expressed frustration over the lack of funding for the county and

demanded an explanation.

However, with senior officials in the Housing Department on holiday no answer was available to the meeting.

There was no answer either for Cllr Davy Hynes when he asked if any specific request had been made by the Council for funds under the Traveller Programme.

Carthy in call for emergency roads cash A member of Wexford Co. Council has suggested that the government should be asked to come up with immediate cash to tackle the problem of rural roads in the same way as they provided money to tackle the problem of unfinished housing estates. Cllr. Ger Carthy said the state of the roads represented a real emergency and the problem required an emergency response from government.

News that housing estates in various parts of the county

are to be taken over by the Council following the completion of various outstanding works was welcomed by members of the Wexford borough District Council.

But action was urged on a long standing estate at Summerhill Heights in the centre of Wexford town. Cllr George Lawlor said it was more than two years since the application was first made by the estate but it had not progressed.

Still no action on thatched cottage The first thatched cottage that visitors to Ireland see following their arrival in Rosslare is in danger of falling into complete disrepair as the Co. Council stands looks on but takes no action to save it.

The house, known as Peg Murray's cottage has been a cause of concern for some time and there have been several calls for restoration work but to date nothing has

happened.

Cllr. Ger Carthy, who has raised the issue previously, told a meeting of the Wexford Borough District Council, that the condition of the cottage gave a very poor impression of Wexford to overseas visitors who arrived in the county or left it via Rosslare harbour.

He said it would cost just €15,000 to restore the building

which to an organisation the size of Wexford Co. Council was a very small sum.

He was supported by several other councillors but there was not immediate commitment to deal with the problem.

But Cllr Carthy pledged to continue raising the case of the cottage until he gets action.

A bid to deal with the chronic shortage of second level places in Wexford town could see children from places like Blackwater and Taghmon banned from taking up places in the town.

Wexford town faces a serious and ongoing problem in respect of second level school places.

However, the scale of the problem would not merit the building of an additional second level school for some time.

This means that more imaginative ways of easing the problem will have to be found. Cllr.

George Lawlor who has been to the forefront in dealing with the problem over school places in Wexford town for some time, proposed at a meeting of the Wexford Borough District Council that schools in the

town be forced to publish an enrolment policy and he suggested that the catchment area for schools in the town should be the Wexford electoral area.

Cllr. Lawlor accepted that the proposal, which would see children from places like Blackwater and Taghmon, many of whom traditionally attended school in Wexford town, being excluded unless all places were not filled by pupils from the Wexford area.

The Labour councillor accepted an amendment from Cllr .Deirdre Wadding that those who had siblings in a school could be catered for under the proposed arrangement.

However, he said it was not acceptable that students from Clonegal could get a place in a

Wexford town school ahead of someone from Corish Park.

There was an example of one student who lived right across the road from a Wexford town school but had to go to Enniscorthy to get place.

Cllr Ger Carthy said distance rather than an electoral area might be a better way of creating a policy because electoral areas could be changed.

Cllr. Davy Hynes said he would support anything proposed to tackle the problem of school places but he said the ultimate solution was to build another school in the town.

The motion is now to be forwarded to Educatio0n Minister, Richard Bruton for consideration.

Gorey Business Park is a North Wexford success story Gorey Business Park is home to a wide variety of thriving businesses and more than thirty years after it first opened the Park and its businesses are still going from strength to strength.

With more than forty different business interests housed in Gorey Business Park it is a large scale business community in its own right.

At a time when the lack of parking and congested town centres are a problem for a lot of people the Business Park offers the perfect solution.

Its just on the outskirts of Gorey town and has plenty of parking space for customers visiting

150 years of worship celebrated at Senan's St. Senan's Church in Enniscorthy was the scene for major celebrations last Friday night when Bishop Denis Brennan led the ceremonies to mark one hundred and fifty years of Worship at the Church.

Young and old turned out for the unique occasion. The people of the parish were joined by Civic leaders including the Chairman of the Co. Council Paddy

Kavanagh, Minister Paul Kehoe and Deputy James Browne.

Returning too were priests who had served as Administrators in the parish over the years and members of the Sisters of Mercy who have a close association with St. Senan's Parish.

The ceremony itself was a powerful one rich in music and singing. It started with a brief history of the parish church being

A feast of festivals It's the start of the peak holiday season and visitors to Wexford as well as locals will be spoilt for choice when it comes to entertainment over the next few weeks with festivals and events to cater for all tastes and age groups.

It all kicks off over the August Bank Holiday weekend with the headline events, The Market House Festival in Gorey and the Rockin Food Festival in Enniscorrthy.

These will provide a host of free events throughout the holiday weekend while in South Wexford the Leo Carthy Weekend Festival takes place in Our lady's Island.

The famous Castlebridge Show will be held later in the month..

And the Bank Holiday weekend also sees the conclusion of the Art in the Open Festival which has been running at various locations all week.

Your SUMMER in Wexford Gorey all set for Market House Festival Months of planning and preparation have gone into the even and now all the hard work is set to deliver a fantastic weekend of fun and entertainment for all the family with the Market House Festival taking centre stage in North Wexford.

The Market House Festival has established itself as one of the leading open air events in the country and the planners are determined to ensure that it maintains that position with a continuing expansion of the festival programme.

The festival really does present a fun-filled weekend with lots to see and do, and most events are free!

The street music which attracts thousands each night over the weekend is a central part of the festival and this year a a top class line up of entertainers have been engaged to provide the entertainment.

Highlights this year include on street music from Seo Linn (Friday 29th), Cry Before Dawn (Saturday 30th), and

Paddy Casey (Sun 31st). Each evening featured artists and supporting acts take to the stage on the Main Street creating a relaxed carnival atmosphere unique in the South East with people from a wide area making their way to Gorey .

Saturday boasts an action packed family fun day in Gorey Town Park.

This was a big success when it was introduced in 2015 and it promises to be even better this year with , street theatre, magicians, stilt walkers, Kia Ora Mini farm, Pirates Cove Train, soccer, tag rugby, arts and crafts, face painting, live music, children's cartoon characters, and a lot more.

Sunday brings a craft, vintage and artisan food market to Gorey's Main Street. People can get the real market town experience which includes live animals, vintage steam engines and great displays of local craft and food.

Festival builds on the heritage of the Gorey Arts Festival and the Summer Fair which ran for many years and is a great showcase for the town..

Your SUMMER in Wexford Seven pubs nominated for Gorey's Best Pub Vibe Competition Gorey is well known for its great pubs which provide a great service and offer a great atmosphere to visitors and locals. But which pub has the best vibe and which one gets the locals going with its live music and entertainment.

Well that question will be answered this coming weekend when the winner of the Best Pub Vibe Competition run in conjunction with the Market House Festival will be announced.

The competition has been running since July 15th. when it was launched in in McGoverns.

And people have been turning out in great numbers to support their 'local' as the contest has progressed. The final pub in the competition is â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Katie Daly's entering B & the Honeyboy this Friday night..

All set for 76th Castlebridge Show It's been going for more than three quarters of a century and it is still as popular as ever. Yes that's the Castlebridge Show which this year will be held on Sunday August 14th. in the local hall.

This is actually the 76th. annual show and it is a credit to the organising committee that it still attracts such a large entry in the various categories and is ever popular with the public.

The Show features a unique mix of classes and competition in all of them is very keen because to be a winner in Castlebridge is something special.

From jams to eggs, knitting to crafts, flowers to fruit, vegetables to art and photography to agricultural produce its all here.

Some wonderful specimens of vegetables will be on display and there will also be breathtaking crafts and knitting.

There are new classes this year with the Best Artisan Bread, Vegetable Cake, Mixed Fruit Jam in the Baking, a class for Broccoli in the vegetable section and a class called 'A Shot In The Dark' in photography all added to the programme.

And of course there is a comprehensive section for younger people to enter.

The Show itself opens to the public at 1.45pm with an entry fee of â&#x201A;Ź5 per adult and children are free.

There is a Fancy Dress at 3pm while children will be entertained in the tent. St. Patrick's Fife and Drum Band will provide the music throughout the afternoon.

Declan Dempsey, Head Baker at Pettitts and Colm Flanagan will be on hand for baking demonstrations throughout the Show.

The ever popular Pets Corner is back and there promises to be plenty of pets to see while the dogs are not forgotten with a Dog Grooming Demonstration------so why not take the

opportunity to treat your dog to a makeover while you enjoy the attractions of the Show.

And after the grooming session you can always enter your dog in the Dog Show which gets underway at 4pm.

There will be various stalls on the day, including Bric a Brac and of course there will be tea and coffee accompanied by some delicious home baking.

The Best Dressed Lady and Gentleman as well as the Glamorous Granny will also be selected from the attendance on the day.

GER WALSH Rural decline continues There has been a lot of comment about the results of the preliminary census figures published last week.

The most significant thing is the strong growth in numbers in North Wexford, particularly around Gorey and Courtown but equally striking is the fact that many areas of the county, especially rural parishes are experiencing stagnation or small declines in numbers.

When more detailed

figures become available and we know the age breakdown of the population in each area we are likely to see that there is also an ageing population in these same areas.

All this is bad news for rural services which are already in decline but which cannot be sustained if the balance of the population continues to shift.

However, Michael D'Arcy has been doing his bit for rural Post offices at least. On

Whatever happened to walking to school?

The construction of Wexford's new Loreto School is well underway. It's at Kileens a good distance from the existing school at Spawell Road. At a meeting of the local District Council last week Cllr. Deirdre Wadding wondered if a shuttle bus would be put in place to take children to the new school when it opens.

To be fair other members seemed to share her concern and the fact is that a shuttle will be provided.

However, the issue does raise some questions about our priorities as a society.

There was a time when walking or cycling the distance from the town (a maximum of 1.5km for most of the population) to

the new school would be taken as a given but now a major concern is that provision is made to drive the pupils to the location.

And to be fair the councillors are only representing the view of the parents.

And then we wonder why we have a problem with overweight young people.

There was a time when politicians went out of their way to push their way into pres photographs. There were some very skilled operators at the practice. For example the former Fianna Fail TD Hugh Byrne was said to be a prizewinner when it came to forcing his way into a picture. Just at the appropriate time Hugh's head would pop up to be at the centre of the photo and if he

was really successful he would have managed not only to get himself into the pic but he would also have pushed some of his opponents just out of camera range.

But Hugh was not alone in the practice although he was considered the most skilled operator around in his day.

Getting into the press pic is not as important today as it was once was and if you are

being ignored you can always take you own pic and post it on your facebook page.

Doing it for themselves at a recent 1916 event at Wexford rail station were the Sinn Fein memb ers of Wexford Co. Council who were determined to ensure that their attendance at the event would be properly recorded. Now thanks to Pat O'Connor's pic it is being doubly recorded

Pat Codd, a genuine gentleman I was really saddened last week to hear of the death of former Co. Councillor Pat Codd. The word gentleman is often overused but in the case of Pat it is absolutely appropriate.

He had all the essential ingredients of a good local councillor. He was passionate about his parish of Taghmon. It is said that he never let a full Co. Council meeting pass without mentioning the village at least once, he cared about people and looked after all age groups and social

classes.

He also had a genuine interest in the welfare of individuals. Pat stood down at the last local elections when the boundary commission divided the parish of Taghmon in two, putting a lot of his support base into the New Ross district.

There were many who believed that he could have been elected in New Ross but in typical fashion he was concerned that his entry into the race might have had a negative impact on some of

his Fine Gael colleagues and anyway at his age, he declared, it was time to give someone else a chance.

In that election he campaigned in the Wexford District for Frank Staples in the areas of Taghmon that remained in Wexford . Frank was, of course, successful and the last occasion I met Pat was fittingly at the celebrations to mark Frank's election as Mayor a few weeks ago.

Pat will be missed by many but especially by his wife Alice and his family.

Humans join the dogs in fouling walkway Dog fouling has long been a problem in urban areas and along popular rural walkways. It seems it is a particular problem in Courtown Woods with local councillor Anthony Donohoe

recently vocal in trying to get something done about it.

However, according to Robbie Ireton its not just dog fouling that is the problem in the woods, there's plenty of 'human manure' around there

as well. That's exactly how Robbie described it.

It's no wonder the dogs are fouling if this is the sort of example they are being set by their masters. '

Volunteers in Visit Wexford Ambassador programme The most recent Visit Wexford Ambassador volunteer programme kicked off last Friday and will continue every Friday and Saturday until the 13 th August. This programme sees volunteers from the locality walking along the main street and extending a warm ‘Wexford Welcome’ and helping hand to any visitors to the town. A similar scheme ran during the Wexford Festival Opera last year and in the run up to Christmas in Wexford Town.

The current group of 16 volunteers are made of a fantastic mix of local people from all backgrounds. Their friendly

faces and helpful attitudes will demonstrate to visitors to the town that the entire community in Wexford cares deeply about making it one of the top counties to visit in Ireland.

Having completed a short training session in Wexford County Council the volunteers were equipped with leaflets and other collateral to help them advise and direct tourists in the town.

For more complicated queries from visitors, the knowledgeable staff in the Tourist Information Office on the Quay are on hand to help the Ambassadors.

The Talbot Hotel have kindly

offered to act as the support hub for the Ambassador programme in the town. Volunteers meet at the Talbot Hotel to begin their patrol of the Main Street, assisting any visitors to the town who may need a little help orientating themselves.

Visit Wexford hopes to extend the Ambassador volunteer programme to other locations around the county at key visitor heavy times over the coming year. Rosslare RNLI called to two incidents While out on a weekly lifeboat exercise on Saturday Rosslare RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew were called out by the Coast Guard to two separate incidents.

The first incident, which occurred close to the Burrow point at Rosslare Strand, involved a small dog that had run across mud flats heading for the open sea. Rosslare Harbour lifeboat deployed its daughter boat and two volunteer lifeboat crew quickly lo-

cated the dog and a local man who had gone to help. Both man and dog were found to be safe and made their way back to land. The two RNLI volunteers retuned to the lifeboat and immediately were tasked to assist a yacht which had suffered mechanical failure.

Due to very calm conditions, the yacht was unable to continue its journey and requested assistance. Rosslare Harbour lifeboat reached the yacht, located a few miles southeast of

going to the aid of animals. He said, ‘People can put themselves in great danger. It is always advisable to contact the emergency services first when a pet or animal gets into difficulty. We all love our animals and we want to help them safely but we don’t want to see owners put their own lives at risk doing it. The RNLI volunteers had a long day at sea but thankfully both incidents were resolved satisfactorily.’

Pick up Social Welfare in Post Office-----D'Arcy Deputy Michael D'Arcy, is encouraging more social welfare recipients to use their local post office to pick up their payment.

“The Department of Social Protection currently has a contract for cash social welfare payments to be made at post offices. Over 38 million social welfare payments are made in post offices throughout the country, but this number could increase.

“In the Programme for Government we committed to actively encourage more payments at Post Offices.

“Now the Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar has written to all Department of Social Protection staff dealing with customer claims and payments. He’s asking

staff when dealing with customers who are making new claims, or seeking to change their payment arrangements, to advise customers they can choose between payment at the post office or by electronic funds transfer.

“Minister Varadkar has told staff that customer wishes should be facilitated where they choose to receive their social welfare payment at their local post office.

“This is a very welcome intervention from the Minister.

While post offices remain central to Irish communities, there is a challenge to ensure that they remain competitive.
