Council cash brings Cannonball back The Cannonball supercar spectacular which came to Wexford for the first time in 2015 is on its way back to Wexford thanks to Wexford Co. Council splashing the cash to get the organisers to return.

Last year thousands lined the streets for the event and this year is likely to see similar crowds as one hundred and eighty supercars roll into town at 6pm on Sunday September 11.

To be included as a host town for the three day event money has to be put up front to cover costs. The Council is believed to have provided an initial €15,000 cash guarantee with the total cost of hosting the event likely to be several thousands in excess of that figure.

The investment is believed to be money well spent given the huge crowds the event brought to Wexford town last year.

The night Gorey invaded Wexford town It was the night Gorey invaded Wexford town, but there was no battle, no street fighting or any ill-feeling, just glamour, excitement and good humour.

The occasion was the annual Grad Dance for students of Gorey Community School

who travelled to Clayton Whites Hotel for their big night.

With the Leaving Cert results delivered the previous week and the CAO offers made the previous day it was time to let their hair down after up to six years of study.

As the next stage of life awaits this was one final occasion for young people who have been together for years to enjoy themselves as a group before they begin their individual paths which will take them to various educational institutions and workplaces in all

parts of the country, While many will retain the great friendships they have forged in Gorey over the years as far as the unit that was the Leaving Cert class of 2013 is concerned this was the end of the road.

There was a great atmosphere

in the hotel foyer as the students and their partners gathered for the night. It was selfie time for the majority as they wanted to capture this special moment. The girls looked fabulous in their stunning latest creations while the guys cut quite a dash too in their stylish

suits.

Pat O’Connor was on hand to capture a sense of the occasion. His photographs were all taken at the beginning of the evening. Whether or not the girls and guys cut such a dash at the end of a long night we don’t know.

GER WALSH Time to act on Wexford’s quays The quay front in Wexford town is one of the greatest assets the county has from a tourism point of view. It is particularly important because of its location in the county town and its proximity to so many hotels and other accommodation.

Visitors to Wexford are always enthralled by the wonder of a quay front that

encompasses so many wonderful features from the fantastic views out over the harbour, to the fishing boats and the trains running down along the quays.

It is a feature which is pretty unique to Wexford and a great tourism asset. It is, of course, also a wonderful amenity for

locals and thousands of people use it for walks and exercise on a daily basis.

It is a place for the elderly to take a leisurely stroll and for families to enjoy and the local authority has plans to replace some of the broken surface and upgrade the entire area in the not too distant future.

The Council also has rightly imposed rules and regulations

for those using the quay front.

The scourge of dog fouling continues to plague the area and there is also a ban in place on the consumption of alcohol.

This ban, coupled with the ongoing efforts to tackle the dog

fouling problem, is to be commended because this amenity area must be preserved for the benefit of the majority and not ruined by a minority.

However, when regulations are drawn up for any area they must be enforced, otherwise the local authority looks like a bit of a joke.

Perhaps the alcohol ban is enforced but on the various occasions I have walked the quay front in recent months I see little evidence that it is.

In fact some people can be found drinking cans of lager in exactly the same spot almost every evening.

I know that the Council will point to a lack of resources and personal responsibility, particularly in respect of the dog fouling.

However, that is not really good enough. If this location is the town’s greatest amenity then it deserves to be protected from all forms of anti-social behavior and vandalism.

There is no point in saying that the unacceptable behavior takes place at a time when the wardens are not working. That has been an argument put forward in the past, particularly in relation to the dog fouling with local authority officials insisting the problem happens at a time when the wardens are not working.

The solution to that is to in-

vest in the warden service to ensure that they are on duty at all relevant times. Having the wardens on patrol at times when there are no difficulties but absent when we all know there are likely to be problems is like providing people with umbrellas on sunny days and having them locked up in Co. Hall on days when it is raining.

An imaginative reorganisation of the warden service and the installation of comprehensive CCTV should be considered to ensure that the quay front remains a place for thousands of locals and visitors to enjoy well into the future.

Of course I accept it should not be necessary to spend a lot of money protecting this area from the morons and people should respect it for the gem that it is. However, experience teaches us that unless we use a heavy stick the majority will be defeated by the minority and a problem which may seem relatively minor today will spiral and then it will be too late because the reputational damage to the area will be irreparable.

And just in case people might argue that the problem is a relatively minor one--------have a look at these pictures. All sorts of rubbish is being dumped into the water and this is already beginning to create a very poor impression of the town.

Sitting back and moaning about those responsible and condemning them is all very well, but it will achieve nothing. The proper enforcement of existing by-laws and the creation of new rules and regulations where necessary is the only way anything will be achieved.

Let the Roses stick to telling us about their ‘boyfriends in construction’ The decision of one of the contestants in the Rose of Tralee Festival to air her view on the 8th amendment during the live show caused quite a stir. At lot of people who would be fans of the show seemed to be concerned that such expressions of opinion might take the show in the wrong direction, while those who normally would not have a good word to say about the Rose Festival thought it was a great idea.

But if this catches on I can see the poetry and Irish Dancing being replaced by speeches in support of

Enda Kenny or Micheal Martin or even some of the girls extolling the virtues of their local TD or perhaps using the occasion to promote their local pub or restaurant. Where would it all stop?.

Bad and all as it is, and believe me it is bad, best leave it the way it is and let the girls continue to waffle on about their boyfriends in construction, their wonderful mothers. ’super dads’ ‘amazing grandmas’ and all the voluntary work they have been doing to help change the world.

There’s plenty of school money for rubbish food I was struck by two items which featured in the news over the past few weeks, First there was all the publicity about the very high cost of sending children back to school and then there was the report about the unhealthy nature of school lunches.

The reality is that most people seem to shovel out money to their children to purchase fast food lunches and soft drinks to get them through the day instead of

preparing the traditional lunch at home.

In the first instance this is a very costly option and it’s also unhealthy. If people find school costs such a problem perhaps this is one area where they could make a saving.

We topped the Olympic table for arrests and seized passports It might have been a relatively disappointing Olympics for Ireland, although our three medal winners and those who finished in top ten positions all deserve huge praise for their achievements.

However, their efforts were somewhat overshadowed by events outside the stadium.

If medals were awarded for having the most officials arrested, or passports seized then Ireland would have been in gold medal position, but sadly the only effect of the ticket fiasco was to damage the reputation of Ireland Inc. Our boxers had a terrible time, with many performing way below expectations and others being the victims of rather crazy judging decisions. The departure of Billy Walsh from the set up last year must have had a negative impact even if that is dismissed by those in power in

the IABA. But then what else would they say? Billy himself must have been laughing up his sleeve as the US team picked up three

Was there a better way for Rosslare roadworks?

The disruption on the Rosslare Road caused by the major roadworks which have been going on in recent weeks has resulted in a lot of negative comment and debate. First it must be said the works are absolutely necessary and the fact that they are going ahead has to be welcomed.

Equally it has to be accepted that works on this scale cannot be complet4ed without a level of disruption.

The question then is, of course, whether or not the level of disruption could have been lessened. This is an issue which has arisen on several occasions in the past. Just over a year ago there was an outcry when works on the N11 South of Ferns caused massive tail-

backs and in the wake of that local councillors did point out that if certain diversions etc. had been put in place the level of disruption could have been lessened.

Now we are in another part of the county and again we have major disruption. There have been suggestions from locals that a better thought out comprehensive traffic plan involving a number of diversions and one way systems on minor routes coupled with longer working days and an element of working under floodlights could have dealt with a lot of the problems.

I cannot say whether or not this is true, but I do know that as the works progressed the working day was lengthened in the

face of vicious criticism of the disruption which begs the question as to why the longer days were not there from the start.

No doubt we will hear much more about this when the Council meets in September but a situation where a couple using bicycles made their way from the ferry to Wexford town faster than those using cars hardly gives a good impression of Ireland to those arriving in Ireland for the first time.

But it is fair to say that I have often encountered long delays on the routes out of Fishguard and Pembroke as a result of roadworks. This was particularly the case with Pembroke in recent years as major road upgrades were undertaken on the route from the port.

Church ceremony ‘all a blank’ for wedding guests The Wexford town based priest Michael O’Shea gave an interesting insight into the reality of working as a cleric in an increasing secular community at masses recently.

He contrasted the experience between going into nursing homes, which local priests do on a weekly basis to celebrate mass for residents, and officiating at weddings.

In the nursing homes, which are generally populated by elderly residents who grow up in an era when virtually everyone went to Sunday mass and diligently learned the words of prayers and hymns the entire congregation, despite many being quite ill and frail, answer the mass enthusiastically, never missing a word and they sing out all the traditional church hymns.

But the modern wedding is a different story. When it

comes to the mass and payers it is all a blank for most people in attendance, according to Fr. O’Shea.

Many of the guests will not have been in a church for years and they have little idea of what to do or say.

It’s all a complete blank for most in attendance and they usually admit it explaining how long it has been since they were inside a church.

But according to Fr. O’Shea whether it has been ten days, ten months or ten years since their last visit they are always very welcome back.

News Deadline extended for start-ups to apply for share of €1.5m funding €15,000 financial support available for innovative business start-ups in the south east* through the New Frontiers Programme which recommences in early September. €1.5m in Enterprise Ireland funding has been secured for 55 early-stage entrepreneurs over the next five years in Waterford through the New Frontiers programme at Waterford Institute of Technol-

ogy.

Based at the ArcLabs innovation hub in Waterford the programme is now taking applications until 31 August 2016 from entrepreneurs and innovative business start-ups.

New Frontiers Programme Manager at Waterford Institute of Technology, Eugene Crehan explains who the programme is for. “The New Frontiers programme is designed to help people who

have already passed the idea stage, and are serious about ‘concept development’. The time commitment for Phase 1 is one evening per week, starting from Tuesday, 6 September 2016. The application process is online at www.wit.ie/newfrontiers so people can apply easily.”

In recent years the programme has appealed to those in the medical devices and broad technology areas.

“Over the next five years we hope to support another 250 entrepreneurs on Phase 1 of our programme with about 20% making it through to the second phase and access to EI funding every year. Those who get onto Phase 2 are on the programme two days per week for six months and get funding of €15,000 each. The programme is run by the WIT School of Business from ArcLabs, the innovation hub

based at WIT’s West Campus, Carriganore.”

One of the trends programme organisers have noticed is that it’s less common to see applicants who are pursuing a new future following redundancy.

“People now have a choice of quality jobs open to them.

Therefore, those applying to New Frontiers tend to be people who have significant domain experience and are considering leaving a job to

pursue a business idea.”

Crehan adds that the programme may be of interest in future years to people who would like to move back to the south east from Dublin or overseas, or to people who are attracted to the lifestyle the south east has to offer. “People can get in touch now with the view to applying for the Phase 1 in 2017, giving them plenty of time to plan a move from Dublin, for example.”

Like all pleasures moderation is the key. A flutter on the Grand National, a bet on the FA Cup or a few lottery tickets not to mention supporting those draws for local clubs are part and parcel of life. We all long for that windfall that will fix everything.

In times past gaming and gambling was very strictly controlled but the modern age has seen many such controls capable of being ignored.

In MABS we have seen people get into very serious arrears and dubious loan situations because of the ease of access to many modes of gambling. Gone are the days when one had to go physically into the “bookies” to make a bet. Now you can bet by telephone or online. In addition you can buy tickets online or play poker or slots or many

other forms of gambling from the comfort, seclusion and privacy of your own home.

Again these can be interesting diversions provided you know when to stop and most people do understand the limits of their luck and finances.

Unfortunately a growing percentage get caught in the belief that “next time I will call it right” but in all games of chance you will not improve your chances by playing more.

Like tossing a coin it is 50/50 whether it will be heads or tails EVERY time you toss.

The very option of being able to gamble – through any form – in complete secrecy has resulted in people attending MABS with serious debt problems because a partner has used mortgage or rent money to fuel the addiction without the other having any inkling. This then presents the double problem of dealing with the arrears and the personal feelings of broaching and confronting the addition.

If you feel that there is a problem – even a minor chance – of gambling addition you should act immediately. The Rutland Centre has identified a number of pointers (see below) but if you find that you cannot cope financially for an unknown reason or you are buying lottery tickets daily or you are spending a lot of time online on gaming sites whether you win a few or not you should think very seriously about attending a counsellor or Gamblers Anonymous.

The Rutland Centre recommend watching out for: Mood swings: Those closest to diagnosed problem gamblers have said that mood swings were a significant sign of a problem, including highs and lows, irritability and short-

tempered responses Unhappiness or depression: Being a problem gambler also tripled the likelihood of extreme unhappiness.

Dishonest behaviour: Those addicted to gambling often act dishonestly. A prime example is dishonestly taking money from loved ones, friends or employers.

Secretive or evasive: In order to hide their gambling problem from others, those addicted to gambling can be secretive and evasive about financial matters or their whereabouts. Those closest to a problem gambler have said that the lying and secrecy were two of the most difficult behaviours to understand Preoccupation with gambling: An excessive preoccupation with gambling and self-isolation from others in order to spend more time gambling. This type of behaviour can also lead to unreliability.

Physical signs: While a gambling addiction is one of the hardest to recognise on the outside, there are some physical signs related to the problem.

For example, they may appear exhausted due to their excessive preoccupation with gambling, possibly resulting in insomnia, as well as possibly leading to issues around hygiene and grooming.

The latest search to find Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE) is getting underway in Wexford this week, through Local Enterprise Office Wexford.

With a €2million investment fund available, including a €50,000 investment fund for Wexford winners, the enterprise initiative from the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and Enterprise Ireland attracted 1,400 applications across the country last year and supported over 450 young entrepreneurs through training, mentoring and direct financial assistance.

Announcing the start of this year’s programme, the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Ms. Mary Mitchell O’ Connor T.D. said: “The quest to find Ireland's Best Young Entrepreneur is one of the most exciting initiatives to create new businesses and new jobs in recent years.

IBYE generates that "cando" spirit in which young people excel. I want to foster that spirit and to demonstrate that there is help out there for any young person that wants to take a risk and start their own business. The first-stopshop to get advice and support on starting a business is your Local Enterprise Office. I want to congratulate the Local Enterprise Offices on rolling out IBYE and I look forward to meeting Ireland's young entrepreneurs up and down the country. I would encourage all young entrepreneurs, between the ages of 18 and 35 to talk to

their Local Enterprise Office about the IBYE programme and discuss their business ideas.”

The initiative is coordinated by all 31 Local Enterprise Offices and begins with a nationwide competition across three categories at county level: Best Idea, Best Start-Up Business and Best Established Business.

Around 450 applicants, across every Local Authority area, will be invited to regional ‘Entrepreneur Bootcamps’ in November, to help them develop their business and new venture ideas.

Speaking about Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE), Minister for Employment and Small Business, Pat Breen T.D., said: "Ireland's Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE) initiative offers a very significant stepping stone into the world of running your own business for young people aged 18 to 35.

It's not just the scale of the investment fund on offer that makes IBYE so important, IBYE entrants can go on to receive intensive enterprise boot camp training from their LEO under the programme, to help them establish and develop their entrepreneurship careers.

With an investment fund of €50,000, Local Enterprise Office Wexford will award six investment prizes to three category winners and three runnersup, before the Regional Finals early next year.

The local winners in the Best Start-Up and Best Established Business categories will receive €15,000 each and the two runners-up will each receive

€5,000. The Best Business Idea winner locally will receive an investment prize of €7,000 and the runner-up will receive €3,000.

Breege Cosgrave with Local Enterprise Office Wexford explains: “The €50,000 investment fund for Wexford winners is a very important part of the competition and will help more young entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and create more jobs here locally. Other business supports, such as management training, networking and one-to-one mentoring are also at the heart of the IBYE competition. 450 young entrepreneurs benefitted from these business supports last year, so the rewards are there for participants, as well as for the winners. Taking part in IBYE will help Ireland’s young entrepreneurs to move their businesses to the next level, whatever stage their business is at.”

The competition is now in its third year and last year’s local winners were: Richard Murphy, MyMoodandMe in the Best Business Idea category; Ian Coleman, LifeBites in the Best StartUp Business category and Diarmaid Ó Súilleabháin, D. O’Sullivan Consultant Engineers in the Best Established Business category.

To enter, young entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 35 in Wexford are being asked to visit the competition website at www.ibye.ie , to submit their entry online.

The closing date to enter is Friday, October 14 th and there is no entry fee.

Compass Club aims to lure Wexford kids away from screens and back to nature Hours in front of a screen, less time playing outdoor and a society faced with the concern of ‘stranger danger’ has led to a generation of children who simply don’t have the freedom to explore the natural world around them, according to new research from Compass Club by Coillte which is a new afterschool outdoor programme in Irish forests nationwide designed to help children to grow a love for the outdoors , through fun experiences and activities that get them out and about with their friends and develop essential life skills that stick with them for life.

Half of children in Ireland (51%) only spend 30 minutes or less playing outdoors after school and parents overwhelmingly admit (64%) that this is far less than when they were children. This worrying trend is leading to what has been termed ‘nature deficit disorder’ amongst a generation of children.

Children are missing out on life forming nature experiences with the research show-

ing that almost half (45%) have never climbed a tree, the same portion (48%) have never gone walking in a forest with friends, almost one in three (62%) have never pitched a tent, more than two thirds (69%) have never toasted marshmallows over a fire, almost three quarters (74%) have never sat around a camp fire and a staggering eight in 10 (84%) have never used a compass.

Compass Club, from Ireland’s forest management organisation Coillte, have developed a unique new afterschool programme of outdoor skills for 6 to 12 year olds taking place in 47 locations nationwide from 19th September 2016. The clubs take place in Coillte forests mainly and are designed to encourage exploration and discovery in a supervised environment with small group sizes creating a greater sense of freedom.

The programme runs one day per week for six weeks on a rolling basis and three locations in Co. Wexford have been selected for the pro-

grammes----------Camolin Park in the North of the county, Barntown/Carrigfoyle in the South and Ravenpoint/Currcloe The child-led courses are built on the principles of strength based education and the syllabus is designed to develop problem-solving, critical thinking, inquiry and investigation, spatial awareness and sensory perception – all with a healthy dose of fun. For kids, they get to pick up school curriculum skills in an environment that couldn’t be any different from a classroom.

Their awesome forest adventures include everything from navigation, knot skills, rope swings, scavenger hunts, games, building shelters, learning about habitats and toasting marshmallows.
