Delivering to more homes in Co Wexford than any other newspaper
A major upgrade of Gorey Town Park has been given the go-ahead by members of the local Council. The Council insists that they want the park to be a ‘facility for all’ with activities to cater for people across the ages. The aim is to provide a top class

Wexford motorists fail to get drunk driving message Motorists in Co. Wexford are failing to get the message when it comes to drink driving with an increase of 14% in the number of drivers caught while driving under the influence of alcohol during the past year. An average of almost five drivers per week were de-
tected drunk driving during the course of 2016. The total of two hundred and forty drivers caught for the offence was an increase of thirty on the two hundred and ten arrested during the previous twelve months. The figures were revealed by Chief Supt. John Roche to
members of the Joint Policing Committee for the county when he presented a comprehensive review on crime statistics for the county. The Chief Supt. said the figures indicated that the message on drink driving was simply not getting across locally.
There was also a big increase in the number of motorists caught for speeding and this is being put down to increased Garda and Gatso van activity. But away from the roads there was good news with a sharp drop in all headline crimes reported by the Chief Supt.
Mayor leads final tribute to Dominic Kiernan Wexford paid a final tribute to three times Mayor of the town, Dominic Kiernan on Tuesday as the Mayor of Wexford Borough District, Frank Staples, led other members of the District Council in their robes of Office at a Civic Funeral in Clonard Church. Bishop Denis Brennan presided at the mid-day Requiem Mass where Mons. Denis Lennon was the Chief Celebrant, assisted by Fr. Murty Byrne, Fr. Michael O’Shea and Fr. Barry Larkin. All aspects of the late Mr Kiernan’s involvement in sport, politics and community and voluntary affairs were reflected in the ceremony with a hurl and boxing gloves among the symbols of his life which were on the altar during the
mass. The eulogy was delivered by the former Fianna Fail TD, John Browne, who was a close personal friend. The Mayor and members of the Council led the cortege as it left Clonard for crosstown ceremony where Dominic was laid to rest with his wife Betty who passed away just under a year ago. Meanwhile, the March meeting of Wexford Borough District Council was adjourned as a mark of respect to the former mayor on Monday. The tributes were led by the only two councillors still serving who had been on the old Borough council at the same time as Dominic. Cllr. Davy Hynes concentrated on the late councillor’s work for sporting and voluntary organisations in the town and the support which he provided for people who faced difficulties ‘before it was fashionable to do so’. He recalled Dominic helping him personally when Don Curtin, former Wexford Town Clerk he had faced chats with Dominic’s son Patrick and Fi- dark days. Wexford Colourful celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day It’s the day when being Irish is celebrated across the world with the Taoiseach and Ministers travelling across the globe to promote Ireland. At a different level local communities do exactly the same on St. Patrick’s Day. Every town and local area puts its best foot forward to promote itself by showcasing exactly what it has to offer in terms of youth activities, sport, culture and business. Across Wexford they stepped out on the National Holiday with pride as part of youth clubs, football clubs, boxing clubs, GAA Clubs and
much much more. It’s a day when people can see first-hand just how much there is to do in local communities with so many organisations providing a vast range of activities for the young, the elderly and everyone in between. It’s also an occasion for local businesses to promote and showcase their wares and increasingly it provides an opportunity for those from far off lands who have made Co. Wexford their home to proudly and colourfully display their culture. They started early in
Wexford town with the traditional St. Patrick’s Day Mass at 9am in Bride Street Church preceding the parade which began immediately afterwards. Across the county the parades followed throughout the day with all the main towns as well as some smaller villages hosting events. Photographer Pat O’Connor was out in Wexford town and Gorey and his picture coverage provides a flavour of the colour and excitement on the day as young and old braved less than ideal weather to celebrate St. Patrick.

Councillors angry over Wexford’s support for Waterford A Co. Council submission on the government’s National Planning Framework has drawn harsh criticism from several members of the Council because it supports the development of Waterford City as the Capital of the regional. But Director of Services Tony Larkin has defended the submission saying it was important that Waterford develop as the Capital of the South East and become more important in a national context.
The South East Capital was in competition for investment with Limerick, he told the March meeting of the Council. However, Waterford had few supporters in the chamber with Councillor Ger Carthy saying they could look after themselves in Waterford and he said the neighbouring county would not be in the business of looking after Wexford. He was supported by Cllr. Lisa McDonald who said she
did not want Wexford to play second fiddle to Waterford. She also called for the submission to be more visionary. Cllr. Malcolm Byrne also stressed the importance of the submission saying its impact would be felt right up to 2040 There was criticism too of the failure to make a stronger case for investment in Rosslare Harbour with Pip Breen saying that Rosslare ‘should be our number one priority’ Cllr. Fionntan O’Suilleabhain
said the importance of developing rail freight services to the port in the future had not been covered. Cllr. George Lawlor said Rosslare and Wexford had a massive opportunity to be the ‘real gateway to Europe’ in a post Brexit world. Cllr Larry O’Brien said the submission on Rosslare should be ‘a hell of a lot stronger’. He said the Port was ‘falling to bits’ at the moment.
New threat to downgrade Mental Health Services On the very day that members of the Co. Council were given details of a new community based initiative aimed at increasing awareness of mental health problems and the supports available to tackle these difficulties word came through that the Mental Health residential facility in Waterford, which serves all of
County Wexford, may at best be continued as a ten bed unit into the future following investigations by the health standards authority. There was alarm some weeks ago when it was revealed that there was a threat to close the facility completely due to safety concerns. At the March meeting of the Co.
Council Cllr. George Lawlor revealed that a revised report suggested that with various works and improvements the centre could continue to operate ten beds, a considerable reduction from its current capacity. He said such a facility would be completely inadequate for the needs of the
area and once again highlighted the need for a twenty-four seven Mental Health facility in Wexford. He was supported by other councillors who criticised the HSE for their attitude to the problem with calls for immediate attention to be given to the provision of a new facility in Wexford.

Some housing developments which have not been taken in charge because of difficulties with water and sewage services are in a limbo and they may have a great difficulty getting out of it, it has been revealed. The vast majority of unfinished and problem estates have been dealt with over the past few years but the difficulties faced by the small number that remain could be very difficult to resolve and the prospects for them being taken in charge any time soon are bleak. The problem is that the Council is no longer a water
authority so it cannot deal with some of the issues which have arisen and Irish Water are not prepared to take on the problems. Problems faced by residents in a specific estate were raised at the March meeting of the Council by Cllr. Michael Whelan who pleaded that something should be done by the local authority to resolve the matter. But Director of Services, Tony Larkin, pointed out the difficulties involved saying that the Council had little scope to act because it was no longer a water authority.
Anger over banishing ‘Saint’ Members of Wexford Co. Council have blasted the decision by management at Wexford General Hospital and the HSE to remove the word Saint’ from the wards at the General Hospital. They backed a motion from Cllr. John Fleming calling on the authorities to reinstate the word ‘Saint’ on all wards to ‘reflect our heritage, tradition and history’
Cllr. Fleming said the removal of the ‘Saint’ names was a waste of time and money and Chairman Paddy Kavanagh said it should not have happened. Cllr. Deirdre Wadding supported the motion on the basis that it had involved a waste of money but did not back the references to heritage and history which it contained.
Threat to Wexford fishing Sinn Fein members of Wexford Co. Council have opposed a call for the withdrawal of the Sea Fisheries Amendment Bill which is currently before the Oireachtas despite claims that it could be seriously damaging for the Wexford Fishing Industry. Other members of the Council supported the motion from Cllr. Jim Moore who said there
should be consultations on the possible effects of the Bill in a post Brexit era. He warned that the Bill, which gives rights to Northern Ireland registered vessels, could allow Scottish finishing vessels to be re-registered to gain access to Irish waters, a move which would have serious implications for the industry in this county.
New rules for charity shop rates New rules for the payment of commercial rates on properties occupied by Charity Shops has been given the go-ahead by members of the Co. Council. In February serious concerns were raised about the potential damage the new proposals could cause to some charities and the matter was adjourned for a month after more than an hour of discussion. This month there was barely a word said when the matter was reached on the agenda with the
Chairman Paddy Kavanagh telling Independent Councillor Mary Farrell that the matter was not for discussion but for a decision having been previously discussed at length. Cllr. Willie Fitzharris, one of those who had raised concerns previously, said that after further consideration he was now happy with the proposals. Under the new rules rate relief to charity shops will be awarded in Wexford on the same basis as in other parts of the country.

News Co. Council Diary
Can ‘Faulty Towers’ Rosslare really become a post Brexit gateway to Europe? Brexit may cause a lot of problems for Ireland as a whole, Indeed it may not be so special for the Brits either, but there are many who believe it could be a real bonus for Co. Wexford with Rosslare offering an important gateway to Europe for those who want to avoid the hassle of exporting through a NonEU UK, But all these hopes could vanish into thin air if Irish Rail, the current operators of the port, are not given their marching orders from this important piece of infrastructure. The potential of Rosslare is something which has been occupying the minds of local public representatives since the Brexit vote, however,
some of them are close to despair over what they see as the neglect and lack of investment in the facility. At the March meeting of the Co. Council there were tales of broken ramps, fifty year old buses and a general impression of neglect. If this continues any Brexit bonus which may be on offer looks set to pass the county by and that would be a real shame. Ger Carthy was on board a ship which docked in the port recently carrying 700 foot passengers who had to be bussed out of the vessel because the ramp was broken. And it had been broken for up to two months, he revealed. What are they at? he asked. And Chairman Paddy Kavanagh said that he had been
transported on a bus which was at least fifty years old when he used the route. ‘You wouldn’t see it on Faulty Towers’, he suggested. Councillors realise that urgent action will be required to rid the port of its backwards faulty towers image if it is to be fit for purpose in the post Brexit era. But they are struggling to find the answer. In an effort to show their concern for and commitment to the port Malcolm Byrne suggested that they hold a meeting on one of the ferries. Chairman Kavanagh wondered if that would give a whole new meaning to the term ‘booze cruise’ Veteran Larry O’Brien didn’t think meeting on board ship
was such a good idea but others thought that even going to the port would be a signal of support. It will probably take a bit more than having a meeting or even visiting the port to ensure that it gets the kind of investment required to ensure that it could become the real gateway to Europe for Irish exports in a post Brexit world. However, anything which highlights its potential and the disgraceful lack of investment in the facility would at least be a start. The March meeting began with a presentation on a major initiative on Mental Health which is being launched first in the Wexford District with the aim of rolling it out across
the county over the coming months. The Mayor of the Wexford Borough District, Frank Staples, is one of the driving forces behind the initiative. Frank has spoken publicly about his own problems with depression on a number of occasions and it was ironic that he could not be present for the presentation for that very reason. It was one of the occasions when there was unanimity across the chamber with those involved taking away the goodwill of everyone. Indeed it was not just the public representatives who were showing their support with virtually every organisation in Wexford represented at the meeting and offering their
help. There was unanimity too, of sorts on a suggestion about having a members’ seminar on understanding travellers’ rights and culture. It was suggested by Cllr. Deirdre Wadding as an extension to proposed ‘Refugee Intercultural and Awareness Training for Elected Members’ which is due to take place next month. Chairman paddy Kavanagh nodded approval to the people Before profit’s member’s suggestion and added ‘I can provide the course myself’ Probably not exactly what Deirdre had in mind but there are few who would have more hands on knowledge of dealing with the issues of the travelling community.

GER WALSH Mystery of how lawmen detect speeding motorcycles Ever wonder how the speed detection vehicles manage to nab tearaway motorcyclists------you know the ones which sweep past you breaking not just the speed limit but also threatening to do a lot of damage to the ears of anyone in the vicinity with the noise from their roaring high spec engines. Well maybe you didn’t, but it is still an interesting question. You see the cameras on the speed vans pick up cars and read their registration plates as they approach them and if they are going too fast then that’s it. But the reg plates on motorcycles are not visible to an oncoming camera so are they just ignored, particularly by the private gatso vans? You may not have thought
about it but Fianna Fail councillor Joe Sullivan has. Joe is a former Garda himself so he has a good bit of knowledge on these matters. He is also a member of the Joint Policing Committee so he now gets to ask awkward questions in a public forum to the people who were once his bosses. Last week he had a question about the speeding motorcyclists for the Traffic Corps. ‘These cameras can’t film the front regs on motor cycles, so are they just let go’, asked Joe. Oh no no, the rear reg plates are filmed, said the man from the Traffic Corps. ‘The rear plates’ repeated Joe, somewhat bemused. Then he added ‘How exactly do the cameras film the reg plates after the motor cycles
have passed the detection vans’ Oh they do, came the reply, but how they do it, wondered Joe again. Then it was revealed that a new contract had been signed with the private speed detection company, new and upgraded technology had been purchased and there would be a much increased level of detection. But how do they film a number plate when it is behind the camera, Joe continued to wonder and so did everyone else. It’s an interesting question and it looks as if it is not that easy to answer. Perhaps in future when a speed trap is being set up on a road it will resemble a Sky Sports Operation or ITV at Cheltenham
Fashion Show for Scanner Just a mention this week for an upcoming Fashion Show which takes place in Clayton Whites Hotel on Friday April 7th. It’s part of the big drive to raise funds for an MRI Scanner at Wexford Hospital. Tickets are priced at €20 and

Malcolm heads to Paris for his 25th. marathon Gorey councillor Malcolm Byrne is doing a lot of training these days and it's not just in case there is a snap general election, although he is gearing up for that eventually as well. No Malcolm is all set to run his 25th. marathon next month and he will be in good company because about 57,000 others will also line up for the start in Paris. The run sets off at the Arc De Triomphe and the 42 kilometres route goes down the historic Champs Elysee and takes in some of the most beautiful parts of the French capital. Malcolm is doing the run to raise funds for the Simon Communities to assist with the great work they do for the hiomeless.
It all takes place on April 9th and those wishing to make a donation can do so at www.idonate.ie/malcolmparis 2017 and sponsorship cards will also be available. Malcolm is paying all his own expenses so every euro raised goes directly to the charity and I would hope people could be a s generous as possible. This will be Malcolm's third time to run Paris and he is pictured here as a younger man having finished it the first time back in 2009. Malcolm says 'I'm older and slower now but still determined to get around. I have run each of the last ten Dublin marathons and hope to do this year's in October again but for the 25th run, I
wanted to do it in a special city and I really love Paris'. We wish him luck.
with cameras coming at you from all angles. There might even be one in a balloon overhead which would enable Gardaí to film offenders all the way to their eventual destination. I don’t know, but Joe does want to know. I suppose one answer would be to publish details of the number of motorcyclists detected for speeding offences by the so called Gatso vans over the past twelve months. If they had detected a lot then it wouldn’t really matter whether the camera was coming at them from front, back or sides but if they had only detected a handful maybe it would prove that the technology is not as highpowered as some people would have you believe.
Late Dominic Kiernan
I was saddened to learn of the death of former Mayor of Wexford Dominic Kiernan. Dominic served as a member of the old Wexford Corporation from 1985, when he was elected as an Alderman, until he was defeated in 2004, as the tide began to go out for Fianna Fail at local government level. But long before he joined the corporation he had a high local profile running a local radio station in Wexford in the early 1980s and being a strong supporter of many
community and sporting organisations. Back in the day when taking photographs involved more than taking out a phone Dominic was the master photographer for the big occasion. You rarely saw him without an impressive photo machine hanging around his neck and he was not one to spare the film. Outside politics he was an auctioneer and businessman but he will probably be most remembered for the support he gave to voluntary and charitable organisations.

Mother & Baby Remember to enjoy those all-important early years
Everything you need at Happy Baby Nursery Store
The most important thing about the arrival of a new baby into the house is to ensure you enjoy the experience. That can be easier said than done as you struggle through the first few months and many new parents say that a baby’s first few months can be much more challenging than they ever imagined. But they equally add that it is rewarding beyond any expectation. There will always be times during the early months when things appear just too daunting and the message is not to be afraid to seek support and help when you need it. It is important too to trust your instincts, let the housework wait, enjoy your family and relax rather than constantly worrying about whether or not you are things right. Remember those first few years pass by so quickly that you need to know you are making the most of them. And remember too that your little one will hit milestones in his or her own good time, whether that’s before or after their peers and also remember not to be comparing yourself to other mums and dads------being a parent is

It’s time to start thinking about that Spring Clean The beautiful Spring sun is not far off and while it’s a beautiful thing, it brings with it one major problem. It shows up all the dirt and dust. Suddenly you wonder how you’ve been living looking
out of those mucky windows, and surely all that dust on the mantle place couldn’t be true? There’s only one thing for it – it’s time to roll up the sleeves and stick on the immersion. Yep,
hot water, suds and plenty of elbow grease is the only way to go. Of course you can’t have a truly clean home without it being tidy and if you are an organised per-
son this is where you’ll come into your element. If the last time you tidied was back when Mark McCabe had his 1 hit wonder, fear not. Here are a few simple tips that’ll have your gaff
in tip top shape in no time. 1). Be Ready: Mentally that is. There is no point in trying to organise a 1,000 sq ft house if you’re not in “the zone”. So start thinking about what you need to do and when and how you’re going to do it. Paint a mental picture and by the time D-Day arrives you’ll be rearing to go. 2). Clear Out Let Ye: If you have smallies running around that aren’t able to pitch in, organise someone to take them out for a few hours. There’s no hope in hell you’re going to get anything done with 100 questions and complaints coming your direction. If they’re older send them into their room and tell them no Wi-Fi until it’s sorted. 3). Bit by Bit: “How do you eat an elephant? Bite by bite.” It’s the same for all tasks. Don’t try to be a martyr by emptying all your cupboards in one morning, come evening time you’ll only be side-stepping piles of stuff everywhere. Take one room or area at a time and do it properly. If you only get one room done per day that’s OK, if a job’s worth doing it’s worth doing right and that sense of achievement will give you the energy needed for the next day. I promise you’ll be itching to tackle the rest of the house after it.
4). Keep, Sell, Bin: Separate out all your belongings into these 3 piles. The stuff you’re keeping – be honest with yourself & only keep it if you have a use for it, or sentimental value on it, and a place for it. If it’s of no longer use to you why are you holding onto it? Sell – this is a major upside to spring cleaning. You get to make some extra cash. CaChing!! Bin – it is what it is, if it’s no good to anyone, bin it or recycle it. 5). System: If you don’t have one create one. Do you remember your mother saying “everything in its place and a place for everything”, well she was right (don’t tell my mam). The other up-side to a good clear-out is a smoother running life. You will find your belongings much quicker, you’ll get ready for work / school faster and you’ll actually free up some memory because you won’t have to remember where everything is anymore. Think of it like a clean-up app for your brain. Get it working efficiently again. The hardest part is getting started, so get your cleaning rags on, those windows open and the music pumping. You’ll be glad you did it. You can sell your preloved items for free on QuickSearch.ie where you could also win a €50 One4All gift card.

Positive Ageing.......... Caregiving Tips from Home Instead Pros: 8 Words of Advice As a family caregiver, you play a vitally important role in the life of your ageing loved one—a role that can also be overwhelming, exhausting and sometimes thankless. Professional Home Instead® CAREGiversSM are offering words of encouragement by sharing their best advice to support all the great work family caregivers are doing everyday. Here are their top eight tips: 1. Take a break without feeling guilty. Maggie, a Home Instead CAREGiver, says, “The one thing I would advise a family caregiver is to allow themselves respite time, at least a couple times each
2. Helping your loved one look good can help them feel good, too. CAREGiver Theresa says, “Washing their hair, getting a trim or a haircut can vastly improve how they feel and see themselves. Update their clothes as their size changes or they lose weight.” 3. Give them the freedom to forget. CAREGiver Deirdre says, “Do not assume your family member remembers even the simple parts of life they've always known. Do not assume they like what they've always liked: music, television, current events, travel, past favourite foods, visiting in large groups of people. Do not assume they
4. Call or visit regularly. CAREGiver Maura says, “In my years as a caregiver, I have found that most seniors who do not get out much usually experience loneliness. Their phone seldom rings and the television is often left on all day for company. They want to hear the sound of other voices but that doesn't take the place of visiting with other people or spending time out in public.” Maura suggests setting a specific day and time each week to call, to give your loved one something to look forward to. A simple letter or greeting card to let them know they are missed and loved can make their day and remind them that someone cares.

Sharing the Care Established in 1999 by Sharon Bolger, who herself is a nurse, having recognised the need in County Wexford for a professional private homecare service. Sharon built her team of qualified and experienced nurses and home carers to form Sharing The Care, Wexford's complete homecare team. Sharon has a wide range of nursing skills and qualifications, which Sharon Bolger greatly contribute to her ability to provide a high standard of nursing care in the home. She has worked in the Oncology unit in St. Luke's Hospital, Rathgar, Dublin. She has worked with patients with spinal injuries and those rehabilitating after accidents, at the National Rehabilitation Hospital
in Dun Laoghaire. Sharon also worked in the Cardiology department in the Mater Hospital, Dublin. Caring for people at home helps the patient's general recovery as they continue to be treated and as an integral part of the family unit which is recognised as an important aspect to their overall well being. Homecare is provided by experienced carers or by nurses, or both depending on the needs of the patient. The level of care and type of care given is determined by the Team Manager, Sharon, who visits the patient in their home to discuss their needs. Following the first visit a plan of care is developed for the patient based on the information they have given. The plan is discussed and agreed with the patient and the care programme begins as soon as they wish it is as simple as that.
The benefits of working with the Sharing The Care Homecare team: We at Sharing The Care understand that it isn't always possible for the family to cater to all the patients care needs. Taking care of a person full-time at home can be worrying for the family, and Sharing The Care can help relieve that anxiety through the provision of expert care when you and your family need it most. Our unique approach ensures that the care given is specifically tailored to meet the needs of the patient and family. We work hand in hand with you to develop a complete care package to help support you in caring for the patient Our dedicated team of nurses are all registered with An Bord Altranais ensuring a high standard of patient care and nursing excellence. Our carers have FETAC Level 5 Healthcare qualifications and are experienced in looking after the elderly. Anne also advises, “Be considerate about things that may be embarrassing to them (e.g., helping them out of a wheelchair). Be as creative as you can be. If they’re confused about what is going on, ease the confusion by asking questions about their past and suggesting activities like going for a drive and pointing out all their favourite locations. Do what you can to make it feel like they weren’t denied anything.”
7. Be patient and respectful. CAREGiver Bernie says: “Regardless of the reasons they need care, it is important to provide loved ones care in ways that are respectful of their dignity and independence. You need to be patient.” 8. Accept help. “You need to take care of yourself to take care of

How twenty extra Gardaí in county have resulted in amazing drop in crime levels What a difference twenty extra Gardaí in the county have made to crime levels. County Wexford Garda boss John Roche has attributed an amazing fall in almost all categories of crime to the fact that there are now an additional twenty members assigned to the county across all levels. ‘We have twenty extra Gardaí now and it does make a difference’, he told members of the Joint Policing Committee where he revealed the good news on crime.
And this prompted Councillor Willie Fitzharris to say that obviously extra resources did make a difference and they should campaign to ensure that even more resources were made available in the future. Across virtually every heading the incidence of crime has plummeted with the headline offence of burglary being halved from 1,063 offences in 2015 to just 523 last year. Trespass was down from 95 to 48 and criminal damage fell from 768 to 649.
Thefts fell from 676 to 509 while thefts from cars was down from 277 to 190. The only area to show an increase was thefts from shops which went up from 485 to 510. The Chief Supt. explained that this was down to a surge in this type of crime in Wexford town in the run up to last Christmas. The additional manpower has also led to an increase in the number of drug crimes being detected. Offences for sale or supply went up from fifty five to ninety one, while there
were two hundred and eighty seven cases of possession, up from two hundred and four the previous year. There were nineteen cases of drug cultivation, up from seven the previous year. On the assault front the number of incidents involving harm fell by twenty to sixty six while there three hundred and six minor assaults, also a small drop on the previous year. Public Order Offences did show an increase of twenty four to six hundred and fifty eight.
Chief Roche revealed that the changing social patterns of society are reflected in the nature of public order offences with many now taking place in residential areas after house parties and home drinking rather than in the main down town areas after clubs. There was a 28% increase last year in the number of motoring offences detected across the county, with more people caught speeding (7,000) and failing to wear seat belts (830). More drunk drivers were also
detected with the two hundred and forty detections representing an increase of 14% on the previous year. And the good news is that in the first two months of 2017 the decrease in headline crime has continued with burglaries down 69% and criminal damage down 44%. And the problem with thefts from shops which had shown an increase I n the closing stages of 2016 seems to have been arrested with a 38% decrease over the first two months of the current year.
Wexford Association plays big part in London Parade The annual Mayor Of London's St Patrick's Day Parade took place on Sunday the 19th of March. The Irish Ambassador Dan Mulhall and his wife Greta and other invited dignitaries lead the parade from Hyde Park Corner at midday and made its way to Trafalgar Square which showcased a lot of London's Irish sports clubs, Dance Schools, Marching Bands, Vintage Vehicles, Community organisations and pageantry, Thousand of spectators lined the streets of London to view and cheer on the spectacular parade. Fr Murphy's Ladies GAA Club were honoured to carry the Council Of Irish Counties
(CICA) Banner in the parade. Once again The London Wexford Association entered a float which was kindly sponsored by Justin Ffrench from Clonroche. On the float was some music supplied by Celtic Crunch Band and a wonderful display of Irish dancing from The O' Connor School of Irish Dance. It was beautifully decorated with the purple and gold bunting. A big thanks to everyone who was involved in helping to create the float and to all who proudly marched behind the banner. Cllr Robert Ireton travelled from Gorey for the second year running at the invitation of the President of the associ-
ation to attend the event. to represent Wexford Co Council . The Ballindaggin Pipe Band and their supporters returned for the 5th year to participate in the parade. They all enjoyed it and promised to return again in the near future. The celebrations continued for the Ballindagging Pipe Band as The London Wexford Association organised a night of music and craic at The Mazenod Social Club in Kilburn with music supplied by Ray Morrissey and Slim Attraction. News Fire Alarm halts councillors’ marathon
Gorey Council Diary Butt In, Butt Out and click your fingers for that planning go ahead She said he said ‘Butt Out’, he said he said ‘Butt In’. She insisted it was Butt Out and she called on her colleagues for verification. But he wouldn’t allow any verification because he was chairing the meeting and she was not. This was not some practice dance for Dancing With the Stars but rather an exchange between the Chairman, Pip Breen, and councillor Mary Farrell at the March meeting of the Gorey Municipal District Council. A month earlier there had been an exchange between the two when Pip slapped down Mary and told her to ’Butt out’ when she tried to make a point on behalf of her colleague Fionntan O’Suilleabhain. Well that’s what we thought he said at
the time and he did withdraw the remark following protests from Mary. But the exchange was not recorded in the minutes and Mary was not happy. But Pip now insists he never told her to Butt Out. Instead he insists her asked her why she was ‘Butting In’ That’s not what Mary heard, but Pip insists it was what he said. Only Joe Sullivan seemed to have a recollection of the previous meeting, or maybe he was the only one willing to enter this dispute. He sided with ‘Butt In’ but that cut no ice with Mary. District Manager Amanda Byrne explained that the minutes really were only to record decisions and it was sometimes difficult during the course of exchanges at
meeting to hear exactly what people were saying. One thing which no one had any difficulty hearing at the previous meeting was Fionntan O’Suilleabhain’s claim that developers could get planning permission at the click of a finger. When translated to ‘minutes’ speak that was taken to mean he was questioning the integrity of the Planning Department and its decisions. Not at all, said Fionntan he was in no way suggesting dishonestly on the part of the Planning Department. ‘But you did say developers could click their fingers and get planning permission?’ asked Anthony Donohoe ‘yes I did’ agreed Fionntan. ‘But I was not suggesting any wrongdoing’
‘But if you click your fingers and get planning what else could you mean? pleaded Donohoe. It was just premature, said Fionntan. So if you have applied for planning recently and have suffered a refusal and you did not accompany your application with some finger clicking you know where you went wrong. Special finger clicking consultants are likely to spring up all over the place in the months ahead. There may even be a handbook. Click once for a once off home, twice for a town house, three times for a three bed semi and repeated clicking with the fingers on both hands for a four bedroom residence. This could spawn a whole new industry.
Members of Gorey Municipal District Council put in a marathon performance on Tuesday when they spent almost the entire day in the Council Chamber with one meeting running into another until their monthly meeting finally drew to a close just before 6pm The councillors had spent the morning at various sessions before taking a short break for lunch and then returning for two further meetings in the afternoon. However, they were nearly forced to cut short their discussions when the fire alarm sounded repeatedly during their March Council meeting. At first members and officials were reluctant to leave their seats but with the alarm continuing and the fire safety shutter closing into place everyone eventually began to move. Joe Sullivan was taking no chances and he was among the first to emerge into the
square outside where he was joined by many students who had been studying in the library below. Others followed but eventually everyone returned with a malfunctioning sensor in the library blamed for the alarm. Robbie Ireton (pictured above) said he would not have been surprised if one of the sensors in the chamber itself had overheated as a result of the hot air being generated by the councillors.
