Minister Paul Kehoe has expressed his extreme frustration at the refusal by Wexford County Council of an application for the proposed Dialysis Satellite Unit in Wexford.

“This outcome is a severe blow to every dialysis patient in County Wexford and I am extremely disappointed by how this situation has been handled by the HSE. It appears clear from reading the planning decision that the proposed site was never a viable option for this unit based on its current industrial usage and that a number of more suitable alternative locations within close proximity to the proposed development were suggested during the pre-planning process.”

“Up to this point, this has been a totally independent

process without political intervention between the HSE, the Tenderer and Wexford County Council as is right and proper. However, I am meeting with Minister Simon Harris to seek intervention in this matter and to call on the HSE to find a resolution in the immediate term. I am asking to for a copy of the preplanning meeting conducted between the Tenderer and the Council and a full investigation into the options that are available for an appropriate solution in the immediate term.

“It is not acceptable that people undergoing dialysis may have to continue to travel to Waterford because of the mishandling of a planning application and it is imperative that the HSE takes immediate action to get this project back on track in the right location.”

News Ger Walsh visited The Castlebridge Show, a wonderful community occasion

It’s enough to sink the heart of the rookie gardener If you have just struggled through the summer to keep the birds off your cabbage plants or lost the battle against the snails on your lettuce then the annual Castlebridge Horticultural and Agricultural Show can be a pretty deflating place to visit.

For more than a quarter of a century in the village they have been hosting the annual Show and last Sunday the doors opened at lunchtime in the Hall to reveal yet another magnificent display of vegetables, home baked bread, wonderful confectionary as well floral displays and crafts and an extensive display of children’s arts.

Year after year the same people tend their vegetable patches with

all the same care and attention as a surgeon performing a complicated operation as they guide their produce on the road to Show Day. The results of their efforts were there for all to see on Sunday. A single perfectly formed cabbage large enough to feed a football team alongside absolute perfection in cauliflower with carrots and onions to take your eye out.

While the winning is important and the competition here is fiercely competitive it’s about more than just the competition.

It’s about being able to show the world that it is possible to grow the perfect vegetable in your own back yard.

And you could see that the pota-

toes did not just look good but they also tasted wonderfully as well with some of the produce having already been cooked and put on display for inspection.

The majority of the produce came from the local area of Castlebridge and neighboring parishes. But there were a number of displays from Wexford town while Fiona Conroy brought produce all the way from Waterford.

Marie Waters came down from the Northern outpost of Hollyfort with her Spikes Gladioli and other displays.

Jimmy Nolan of Ardcavan must have been a busy man this summer judging by the many displays he had in the hall, his

onions and cabbage particularly taking the eye while Anthony Cullen of Ballyregan Bridgetown brought enough vegetables to feed an army, his cooked potatoes looking particularly fetching.

Local, Statia Fortune, was also a busy woman bringing floral arrangements as well as award winning vegetables.

The bread and confectionary displays were magnificent. The only problem was they were for display only so you could look, imagine and feel your mouth water, but there was no tasting.

There was agricultural produce too but I wouldn’t know what good Barley or Oats would really look like so I enlisted the

help of the Christian Media Trust’s Frank Flanagan. However, he didn’t know either.

This really is a great community occasion and the Fife and Drum Band struck up in the enclosure to bring a wonderful atmosphere to the occasion as people prepared to put their dogs on display in the annual Show and children started to assemble for the parade.

And if you were denied the opportunity to taste some of the wonderful confectionary in the display hall you could eat all the cake you wanted in the Tea Tent and at just €2 for tea or coffee and two cakes it probably represented the best value to be had west of Moscow and east of

New York.

The Castlebridge Horticultural and Agricultural Show really is a credit to all those who put so much effort into organising it each year. Long may it continue.

On completion of the 5 or 10 walk or run there will be a free Monster BBQ for all participants at Ballineskar This is a very important fundraiser for St Joseph's GAA club, and it is the third year for the event to be held.

1916 Garden launched in Clonmines Over the first two weeks in August in Clonmines, Wellington Bridge, Eolas Soileir – a small educational NGO, ran a project for international volunteers to construct a 1916 Commemorative Garden.

The objectives of the project were to: ● Provide an intercultural nonformal learning experience on a European level for young people. ● That the activities were designed to help the volunteer improve their social and practical skills. ● To support the volunteer’s daily activities which were in

the field of the environment and cultural heritage. ● To provide activities that had a strong learning dimension. ● To learn about Ireland and our history and culture.

The benefits to the young people were their increased mobility within EU, enhanced language development, intercultural learning, increased employability, appreciation of the outdoors and its positive impact on mental and physical health.

We visited Wexford town, Hook lighthouse, Tintern Abbey and Fethard on Sea. Ten young people from Estonia, Romania, Austria, Lithuania and Spain were hosted for

the event. Funding was provided through the European Union Erasmus+ Youth programme – European Voluntary Service. The Garden was launched last Friday with an information session on European Voluntary Service and how youth and community groups can avail of this funding opportunity to both host international volunteers for up to one year in their organisation and to send Irish volunteers abroad.

This is a fully funded programme where travel and living expenses are funded along with providing pocket money for the volunteer.

€41,973 FDYS grant will benefit young people - Kehoe Minister Paul Kehoe, has said that a €41,973 capital grant for FDYS will benefit young people in County Wexford.

“The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs has announced capital grants for 86 youth projects and organisations around the country and I am delighted that FDYS is to receive €41,973 in funding. This capital grant will really boost the services of

FDYS and so will be of great benefit to young people in County Wexford.

The grant funding will go towards fitting out of premises (€16,975) and upgrade of existing facilities (€25,000).

“Youth projects and organisations such as FDYS play a crucial role in supporting young people throughout the country. It is hugely important that the Government continues

to acknowledge their work and provide funding so that they can maintain and in some cases expand their services.

“We are working hard in Government to ensure that our recovering economy is used in the right way. This means making sure that everyone benefits, particularly vulnerable people or those who need extra support.”

Final 1916 event in Bunclody The final Event of the 1916 Commemorations In Bunclody Library – Talk on WW1 Battle of the Somme with Neale Rooney, takes place onThursday 25 August at 7pm.

University and ex-pupil of FCJ Bunclody, will talk about the Battle of the Somme, whose 100th anniversary we commemorate this year. It began on 1st July 1916 in the high expectation of a major victory that would bring the carnage of the First World War to an end. By the time it

petered out in the following November, more than one million soldiers from both sides had died. Among the dead were over 3,500 Irish soldiers, with many more wounded. The Somme is located in Picardy, a rural area in the north-east of France.

GER WALSH Money alone will not solve the problems of rural villages

Could staff shortages be the real threat to A&E in the future?

There was a somewhat mixed reaction to the government’s scheme aimed at kick starting regeneration in small towns and villages.

To be fair most interested parties welcomed the initiative as a start and recognition that there is a problem in rural Ireland.

The criticism came in the main from an Independent TD who wanted to grab a few August headlines. The man making the critical noises was Michael Fitzmaurice a normally sensible guy who bottled it when he had an opportunity to play a part in government policy earlier this year.

When it is spread around, the €10m cash may not be a lot, but in many small towns you do not need a lot of

Health Minister Simon Harris is one impressive guy. He is unlikely to have a short term positive impact on the health services but he is well able to articulate the problem and deal with even the most incisive of interviewers.

As someone said to me after his appearance on Morning Ireland last week ‘he’s some talker’ and the comment was not meant as a criticism.

But Harris faces a real challenge when it comes to securing improvement in the health service, not least because demand is growing at such a rate a lot more resources have to be found just to stand still.

And the reality is that with growing demand and ever increasing problems getting staff for key posts the situation is likely to

money to make a real difference particularly if the new scheme is run in conjunction with projects supported by other initiatives run by local authorities and non-state groups.

There will obviously be a lot of competition within the county between rural locations to be the ones included in the new scheme. I hope that when Co. Council officials come to select a town they recognise both the need of the location and also the efforts that are already being made by local communities.

The fact is that no amount of State support for rural areas will work in places where there is little or no community spirit or initiative.

Great work has been done in

many places by small local voluntary groups who have created employment and made a lot of practical improvements to their area.

Their previous efforts should now be recognised and further supported.

While the rural initiative is very welcome there must be a recognition that the face of rural Ireland has been changing for a long time and the clock cannot be turned back.

Rural shops have closed both because of depopulation but also because locals now in the main travel to their nearest large town to conduct much of their business.

There are a few examples in County Wexford of places that have bucked this trend and Wellingtonbridge is one

village that comes to mind, but in the main business has left the villages and rural areas and no amount of government assisted schemes are going to change that.

However, given the chronic shortage of houses across the county it would seem sensible that some effort be made to convert disused commercial premises in rural areas into residential accommodation and to ensure that empty rural houses are brought back up to standard again.

It would certainly be a faster way of providing houses than starting on a green field site and I can see no reason why property owners in rural areas would not queue up to sell their properties if a scheme was put in place.

Courtown really does need a new beach I have listened at regular intervals over the past year or so to councilors in North Wexford raising issues about Courtown. In fact Robbie Ireton has been making points about the resort so often that I may even have been guilty of switching off on occasions when the matter was being discussed at meetings of the Gorey District Council.

Well I was in Courtown recently---------my first visit for quite a while--------and I can now fully understand the concerns of Robbie and others.

I thought that the Courtown councilors was exaggerating a bit (why I don’t know) when he repeatedly painted a picture of a seaside resort virtually without a beach, but that’s exactly why I found when I visited there.

Courtown is a hugely

important piece of infrastructure for the tourist industry in North Wexford and some way of restoring a large quality beach there will have to be found.

I know people will raise issues of cost and engineering difficulties but the cost of not finding a way forward for the resort would be much greater for the entire North Wexford region.

Mention of Courtown reminds me of a wonderful exchange between Robbie and Killmuckridge councilor Mary Farrell at the last meeting of the local Council.

I was interested to see last week that a Health Trust in the UK had announced that they were closing an A&E at a pretty major hospital because they had difficulty getting staff to operate it.

The nearest alternative was a forty five minute drive away so this was a big deal. But the Trust insisted it was better to close than operate a unit which was unsafe due to staff shortages.

I would not be at all surprised if we do not see similar situations arising in this country in the not too distance future. In that regard the biggest threats to A&Es like Wexford may be a lack of adequately trained and specialist staff rather than any government policy.

Robbie said he knew how to get funds for beaches and would be more than happy to tell Mary all about it after the meeting.

Their colleagues were amused and raised the image of Robbie and Mary strolling hand in hand along the sand discussing beach funding and roadworks over the summer. I hope they enjoyed the chat and remembered to wear protection from the sun!

The 999 emergency service number has been operated by a central outsourced operator for some time and while on the whole the system is said to be very efficient it does lead to problems on occasions.

Like when a lady called the number recently to deal with an emergency on the quay in Wexford.

When asked where she was calling from and for the location of the incident she said the quay in Wexford.

‘The Quay Kilmore or New Ross’ came the replay ‘no the quay in Wexford’ the caller insisted ‘there’s no

quay Wexford coming up’ came the reply.

By this time the caller was so frustrated that she was almost ready to smash the phone on the ground. All was saved when someone suggested ‘Crescent Quay’ even though the incident was not quite on Crescent Quay. But that did the trick and the ambulance was duly dispatched.

So if you ever find yourself in that situation make sure you know your exact location. Otherwise the ambulance you wanted in Wexford could end up in Kilmore or New Ross.

We should have used tax breaks to relocate Phelps to Ireland With all the controversy around the Irish Olympic team and indeed the committee responsible for running the whole Olympics set up in this country I was thinking that it would have been a good idea some years ago for Ireland to pursue

another form of Foreign Direct Investment, or the much mentioned FDI. Instead of the IDA just looking for tech firms and the like perhaps they should have put their efforts into getting swimmer Michael Phelps to relocate to here.

We could have paid him stacks of money in grants, allowed him to earn hundreds of millions in image rights etc. while paying almost no tax. He could have been given the freedom of half the towns in the country and all he would have to do in return is

swim for Ireland.

And immediately we would have jumped up the medal table leaving one hundred and seventy four countries in the world behind us.

We could have dispensed with all the investment in training camps and the like,

abolished some of the quangos that are involved in preparing our teams for the Olympics and still be able to sit back and bask in the glory of gold after gold coming our way.

No doubt we would have been able to find some long

lost cousins of the great man in some remote part of the country that was in need of a few tourists. Very soon a Visitor Centre would have emerged to be followed by busloads of US tourists.

I tell you it would create more jobs than any Apple HQ.

Lifestyle Gorey became a giant outdoor theatre for Market House Festival There is nothing quite like a packed street with music blasting out over a sound system and everyone enjoying themselves in a really charged atmosphere. That’s what the |Market House Festival delivered in Gorey over the Bank Holiday weekend when the Main Street of the town was closed off to facilitate the wonderful occasion that is that particular festival.

Local and visitors like packed onto the street for the night time musical treats with a variety of bands entertaining the crowds over the three nights.

Pulsating atmosphere, good humored crowds and darkness closing in as the musicians blasted out their numbers from the stage all added to the occasion for what was effectively a giant outdoor theatre.

By day the streets were filled with people as well but the pace was a little more sedate as the crowds enjoyed the food market and display of vintage vehicles.

On Saturday the refurbished Gorey Town Park was the venue for a wonderful day of children’s activities and there was a massive turnout of families to enjoy the day.

The Market House festival has been growing in stature in recent years and is now a must attend event for thousands of people from all over county well and much further afield as well.

The popularity of the event is down to the quality of the entertainment on offer and great credit is due to the very hardworking committee who have paid such attention to detail over the years and put huge effort into ensuring that the programme is expanded and developed each year to make it even more attractive.

Given the importance of tourism to North Wexford ensuring that those who visit, particularly during peak season, have a good time is crucial if they are to be persuaded to return in the future.

Massive crowds filled Gorey's Main Street over the three nights of free entertainment during the festival and they enjoyed a top class line up of bands. Among those to take the stage were (inset) 'The Wild Turkeys'.

Food and music combo does the trick for Enniscorthy

In recent years Enniscorthy has become a place of many festivals, indeed too many festivals, many people argued.

Once the Strawberry Fair, then a weeklong event was the dominant festival in the town but as it went into decline a range of other festivals emerged making virtually every weekend a festival weekend.

However, there was a feeling that the effort was being spread too thinly with the various events failing to make any significant impact.

The local Council, the main funder of festivals in Enniscorthy, came up with

the idea of merging a number of events to provide a focal point around the August holiday.

And the effort has certainly delivered impact with food and music events now rolled into one to create the Rockin’Food festival.

There was great colour in the town for the festival as the crowds enjoyed much to eat and plenty to hear as they soaked up the wonderful festive atmosphere.

Preparing for Further Education As the Leaving Cert results are released the focus moves to Third Level for students and their families The long wait has ended this week for the thousands of teenagers who sat their Leaving Cert exams last June. The post leaving cert summer is not one which any exam candidate enjoys, regardless of whether the weather is good or not.

The date of the results is always at the back of the mind and the closer it gets the more anxious people become. Of course it is not just the young people who go through this nail biting experience but their parents spend a lot of time worrying as well.

Now as the results are announced the majority of students will have achieved what they set out to get, if not their first choice then at least one on their list.

However, in recent years there has been a massive expansion in the number of post leaving cert courses which are available in vari-

ous colleges and institutions so there is certain to be something out there to meet your needs.

The key thing is to take time to check out all the options until you come up with the right solution.

The move from second level education to the next stage is a very anxious time for all students and their families.

It seems there is so much to do in terms of securing a course and then finding accommodation close to your chosen institution, unless you are lucky enough to take on a course within the county and be able to continue living at home.

This year more than ever that search for accommodation is going to be very difficult given the well documented shortage of houses and places to rent, particularly in Dublin but also in other parts of the country.

And with shortage of course comes price rises and there is a lot of evidence to suggest that students will have to pay a lot more for their accommodation this year than in the past.

Accommodation costs are the biggest outlay for families when a student heads off to third level, but there are many more costs as well including registration fees and general cost of living expenses which have to be met in addition to transport.

Gorey Adult Education Centre is situated in a purpose built modern building at The Avenue, Gorey, where Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board provide an integrated service to all Adults and early school leavers.

Full details are available on our website http://waterfordwexford.etb.ie and on the PLSS system operated through the Department of Social Protection. In many cases, those on a social protection payment may avail of these full and part time courses free of charge and gain valuable certification and work experience opportunities in the process. Courses are not however confined to those on DSP allowances and many are free to those with less than a Leaving Certificate or its equivalent.

These courses are designed to update computer and IT skills, help gain access to employment opportunities and/or prepare for entry into third level education/ further training or apprenticeships.

WWETB Training Services offer full and part time courses for young unemployed early school leavers aged 16+ and Adults. These courses are designed to update your education, computer and IT skills, help you gain access to employment opportunities and/or prepare for entry into third level. There are a number of these courses on offer in North Wexford.

The Adult Literacy Service is a confidential free service offering tuition and support with reading, writing spelling basic maths up to level 3 QQI accreditation. The service also offers Family Learning and Community Literacy courses. Basic work place skills are also offered under Skills for Work, which allow those at work to gain skills targeted to their employment opening up other opportunities to them.

For non native English speakers ESOL provides classes for individuals whose first language is not English.

Students range from absolute beginners to higher Elementary level. In some cases, a fee may be charged for this service.

Part time QQI courses at levels 3, 4, 5 and 6 are offered through Back to Education Initiative, to young Adults over 16 regardless of whether they are in work or not. Many workers, in jobs where new regulations demand qualifications are now returning to training through this scheme to gain the certification required.

Many courses are aimed at those who do not have Leaving Cert or equivalent. It gives individuals the opportunity to combine a return to education and training with work, family commitments and other responsibilities.

Community based learning is focused on social and community empowerment and action. People take part in Community Education because they are committed to their local communities and are interested in community and personal development.

Preparing for Further Education Wexford Credit Union on hand to help families manage the costs of 3rd level education In 2016, many families will see their child or children off to college for the first time, others will see their children return. For these families, this can be an extremely stressful time, as the cost of third level education continues to spiral, having a huge impact on family budgets and household spending. Wexford Credit Union would like to remind their members that the credit union is here to help families in the Wexford Area cover these costs by providing a student loan offer.

According to 2015 ILCU research in the Republic of Ireland, 94% of parents were supporting their children financially through college, up from 74% in 2014. These parents were contributing an average of €453 per child per month to cover college related expenses. 72% of parents supporting their children through 3rd level education were struggling to cover these costs with 59% of parents getting into debt to cover college costs. In 2015 €5,030 was the average debt per child per annum and parents were saving for an average of 8 years to put their child (children) through college.

The student registration fee combined with monthly rent and bills, books and materials, food and day to day expenses are a significant financial burden to many families.”

2016 saw another very successful Ban now/Rathangan Show. Ger Walsh presents a flavour of the day

Where the townie kid meets the prize bull The Show is a really great place to bring children who are urban dwellers and not used to the delights of the countryside. You often forget that many children have never see a hen pottering around a yard and certainly have not come up close and personal with a prize bull.

But they get to sample all the delights of rural living on the show grounds and they really enjoy it. At least they do for a time before they head off for the amusements.

While the said amusements may hit their parents a bit in the pocket they do provide a bit of time and space for the adults to take a break and perhaps enjoy the entertainment in the Courtyard. That's the great thing about Bannow, it really has something for everyone, catering for all ages and tastes.

The show jumping set rub shoulders with the vintage machinery fanatics while pet dogs are shown with the same

pride as the latest pedigree bulls.

You see you don't have to own a few hundred acres of land and have a bulging bank balance to be a winner on the field at Killag. The family dog could just as easily land you that coveted rosette.

Or it could even be that special bit of home baking and a lot of people take great pride in the bread or apple tarts which they prepare especially for this day.

Wexford's youth are a talented bunch The show is all about trade stands, farm machinery and cattle but it is also about young people and their talents. A visit to the building which housed the exhibition of children's crafts was a real eye-opener.

What these young people produced was unbelievable.

There were models from recycling material, paintings, drawings and all sorts of other items created by the very young and the not so young.

One item which particularly caught my attention was a model of the titanic. The was no ordinary model of the great vessel before it set sail but really three models of the ship representing how it looked after it hit the iceberg.

It was fantastically created and showed tremendous imagination from second class pupil Edward O'Grady of Danescastle who I am glad to say picked up a winners' The Titanic after it hit the prize for his efforts. iceberg

Big queues for Paul's lunch as FF disappear Traditionally the Show has attracted plenty of politicians because it is a really good place to meet a cross section of the public. Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein have hosted stands for several years.

This year, however, all the talk was of the disappearance of Fianna Fail. Yes, gone without trace. A number of party supporters at the Show were brushing off their disappearance by suggesting

they no longer needed this type of promotion given their standing in the latest polls.

Not so Fine |Gael. The party was there in numbers with tea and little gifts for all who called to their tent. But the big attraction was a draw run by Minister Paul Kehoe.

The prize was a lunch in the Dail and a tour of Leinster House and obviously a lot of people want to break bread in the parliament because there were queues for the free

tickets with councillors Larry O'Brien and Willie Fitzharris busy managing affairs on behalf of the minister.

A short distance away Sinn Fein councillors were joined by a number of their national representatives. The also offered tea to visitors, but they were also busy collecting signatures to oppose any downgrading of the A&E at Wexford Hospital.

Anne White,Show Secretary, the woman who makes it all happen with a selection of the awards on offer to the prizewinners in the various competitions.

The Show is really a great example of what can be achieved in a community when people come together and are determined to organise something special.

The fact that Bannow/Rathangan is the success it is today did not just happen by accident.

It is as the result of a huge amount of effort and voluntary work by an entire community with different groups given responsibility

for different aspects of the event to ensure that everything runs smoothly and the many thousands who turn up have an enjoyable day.

When you talk to people who are attending the event for the first time you get a real sense of how remarkable this event is. They are in awe of the scale and variety of what is on the Show field and they usually regret that by the end of the day they 'didn't see the half of it'

All those who make this event a reality deserve great praise but none more so than the secretary herself, Anne White who is pictured here with some of the many, many trophies and cups on offer for the various competitions. Ann has a very busy task on the day to ensure that everything goes according to plan, but it is not just on the day that she is busy. For Ann preparing for the Show is virtually a year long task.

Leo would have been proud of his own festival The Late Leo Carthy was a man synonymous with many things, not least local politics given his long service to Wexford Co. Council.

However, he was probably even better known for his love for and promotion of traditional Irish Music.

It is fitting, therefore, that the memory of this great t man is celebrated each year with the Leo Carthy Weekend festival in Our

Lady’s Island. The festival itself is a celebration of Irish music, song and dance and Leo was a great promoter of all three.

Over the years Leo travelled the length and breadth of the county to make his own very important contribution to the success of various village festivals so it is fitting that so many talented musicians now travel to Our Lady’s island

each August to sort of repay the debt.

Large crowds gathered in the ‘Island’ over the holiday weekend to enjoy a wide and varied programme of events which had been put in place by the organizing committee.

It was blessed with relatively good weather and was an occasion which Leo himself would have been proud of.

Community Tapestry and Fire Show highlights of Gap Festival It represented six months of work and a lot of effort on the part of a group of local ladies but their efforts were rewarded when they had the

satisfaction of seeing their masterpiece launched as a centerpiece of the local festival.

The occasion was The Gap Arts Festival and the location was the Gap Theatre at Ballythomas when the proud local ladies unveiled their community tapestry.

The Kilanerin, Ballyfad, Annagh, Ballythomas Communi t y Tapestry is a unique work by a group of local women weavers led by Geraldine O’Connor and Benn y Hayden and it depict s places and landmarks in the area including , Annagh Hill, Croghan, the churches at Hollyfort, Kilanerin and Ballyfad. the weekend.

While the launch of the tapestry was a highlight of the festival it was just one of many highlights over a weekend packed with cultural events and entertainment.

Ranging from cinema to theatre and extending to a Fire Show the festival brought a huge amount of activity to this part of North Wexford and represented the fruits of months of planning.

There was also an afternoon workshop for children and there was a nod to the 1916 centenary as well with two 1916 themed films being shown as part of Gap Cinema One was Mise Éire, the famous documentary on the Easter Rising with Seán Ó Riada’s inspirational music. This was followed by Terence White’s, Bandages and Bullets, a unique short documentary on the parts played by Wexford women in 1916.
