News Duncormick native appointed to Pyrite Board Minister for Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, Simon Coveney TD, has appointed Duncormick man Dr. Derek Sinnott, Head of Department of the Built Environment at Waterford Institute of Technology to the Board of the Pyrite Resolution Board (PRB). The Pyrite Resolution Board was appointed by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government under the Pyrite Resolution Act 2013 to make a scheme for the remediation of damage to certain dwellings caused by pyritic heave and to oversee and ensure the effective implementation of a programme of remediation works for affected dwellings. The ‘pyrite remedi-
ation scheme’ is a scheme of last resort which aims to repair certain homes affected by significant pyritic damage where the homeowners have no other practicable option for redress. Dr Sinnott said “I am delighted with my appointment to the board and I am looking forward to working with the Board and Housing Agency in the implementation of the pyrite remediation scheme”. He is a son of Sean and the late Breda Sinnott, and has a brother Brian who is based in Dublin. He lived in Kilkenny for 11 years before returning in 2015 with his wife Serena and fam-
ily (Sean and newly arrived Niall) to his home place in Duncormick, Co. Wexford. After completing secondary school at St Peter’s College, Wexford he studied Civil Engineering at WIT and NUI Galway.

Mental Health First Aid courses in Wexford CommunityMinds, in partnership with Mental Health First Aid Ireland (with funding from the HSE) ran the first of two Mental Health First Aid Courses in Wexford at the end of February with the second being planned for May. CommunityMinds, envisioned last year as a means of building a network of individuals, living and working within their communities who would with appropriate training and knowledge, begin to act as first responders and advocates for mental health and wellbeing within their community. The initial training CommunityMinds wanted to roll out was Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), which is the initial help given to someone who is developing a mental health problem or who is in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional support is received or until the crises resolves. The
MHFA programme is available in 23 countries worldwide. The first group of CommunityMinders were trained up last year, and by May of this year there will be almost 60 CommunityMinders trained in Wexford. Emerging mental health problems covered in the course include: depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance misuse. The course also covers mental health crisis situations including: suicidal thoughts and behaviours, self-harm, panic attacks, traumatic events, severe psychotic states, severe effects of alcohol or other drug use and aggressive behaviours. Leonard Kelly, one of the Co-Founders of Community Minds (together with Vincent Byrne and Alan and Bernadette Doolan) said “We are delighted to welcome Mental Health First Aid Ireland to Wexford to run these courses. Increasing mental health awareness in our
community is a key aim of Community Minds. We would also like to thank the HSE for funding this initiative” Speaking for CommunityMinds, Leonard stated that “It is vital that we build up the network of CommunityMinders, as trained individuals living or working in the community will help reduce the stigma and around mental health, and be able to act as first responders. Many of us are not well informed about how to recognise mental health problems, how to respond to the person, and what supports are available, which can result in individuals with mental health problems delay seeking help or do not seek help at all. There is great strength in our communities, have a large network of CommunityMinders can only make them stronger” For more information check out CommunityMinds.ie . tive, Tom Enright and Rosslare Europort General Manager, John Lynch. All are welcome. Cllr. Byrne said it was important that we all work together to face this challenge, regardless of political colours. "Brexit will be one of the biggest political, economic and social challenges facing Wexford, Ireland and Europe over the next decade. In everything from movement of people and goods at our ports and airports; through the impact on agriculture and industry; to student exchange and research partnerships, Brexit will provide challenges. But there are also opportunities. Wexford companies will now be at an
advantage competing in the EU compared to UK companies. We may also be able to attract more continental tourists." "While much of what may happen is now speculation, we have got to start to plan and ensure that businesses, farms, individuals are prepared for the changes that lie ahead. We need to work together to overcome the significant obstacles Brexit will pose but equally to seize opportunities. What I want to do is for us to start that discussion meaningfully and ensure that we are ready in Wexford. Acknowledging that some in Fianna Fáil raised an eyebrow
at Avril's inclusion, Malcolm said, " We can't be narrowly party political about this issue. Brexit will dominate the policy landscape for the next decade. Avril Doyle has a wealth of experience at European level and I'm delighted that she will contribute to this discussion. Brexit cannot be a political football; we need to all don the Green jersey and work together."

Kehoe guides Humphreys around Wexford 'jewels' Local Minister Paul Kehoe has said he was proud to welcome Minister Heather Humphreys to Wexford and guide her around some of the jewels of Wexford's past, present and future. He said her whistle-stop tour took in some of the shining lights of the Wexford Arts and Heritage offering. Starting in Castlebridge, Minister Humphreys met with the restoration committee for Castlebridge House and Conservatory to learn more about the history of the building and to discuss their plans to restore the historic structure. The next stop incorporated a visit to Johnstown Castle, where Minister’s Kehoe and Humphreys met with representatives from Teagasc and the Heritage Foundation to receive an update on the exciting plans for the further development of the Castle and its grounds, followed by a tour of the Agricultural Museum. The award winning Forge Craft Shop in Baldwinstown was next on the agenda, where master craftsman Padraig Parle and his wife Mairead provided an insight into their business which has significantly developed over the years with the support of Wexford Local Development. Speaking at the Forge Minister Kehoe reflected on hearing Padraig provide inspiration to young entrepreneurs and outlined that the Parle’s and their business were an example of the dedication, skill, crafts-

Onwards to the Wexford Arts Centre, who have just received funding of €1 Million from the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs to make significant changes to their offering. While there, Minister Humphreys had the opportunity to review first-hand the plans that her Department is funding with members of the Board of Directors and to meet the cast of Portia Coughlan, who were just about to take the stage. Final stop, Enniscorthy, where the Ministers visited
the Athenaeum, which stands proudly in the heart of the town following its renovation as part of the Government’s 1916 Commemoration Programme. Minister Humphreys had to opportunity to review some of the historic documents on show in the Athenaeum and tour the full premises and view the work undertaken to ensure that Enniscorthy has a permanent legacy of its part in the 1916 Rising. During the visit, both Minister Kehoe and Humphreys emphasised the importance of investment into both Rural Ireland and the Arts and the obvious
benefits to these developments to the local economy. Minister Kehoe stated; “I believe in Rural Ireland and I believe that there is enormous future potential in Wexford. As a Government, we are putting huge focus into planning for the future so that our children can live in a country that meets their needs. We cannot continue the type of unbalanced development that has seen major growth only in the Dublin area. We need strong well developed cities across the country providing regional balance, encouraging people to live and work outside of Dublin.

The delegation, including students from several Gaelscoileanna, will visit the European Parliament during Seachtain na Gaeilge. Liadh Ní Riada said: “I am delighted to be able to invite some of our young people to the European Parliament during Seachtain na Gaeilge 2017. “It is an international celebration of the Irish language, and i am delighted
to welcome this delegation of students from a number of Gaelscoileanna, including Meánscoil Gharman, to the European Parliament in Brussels. “The students will participate in the Irishmedium interactive parliamentary games. “It's a great source of great pride for me to use and hear Irish as I go about my work here in Brussels. I am looking forward to welcoming these young Irish-speaking students and to hearing them debate the issues of the day in their native language.
Children with disabilities to get medical cards New health legislation from Fine Gael will see more County Wexford children with a disability receive a full medical card. That’s according to Wexford T.D. Michael D’Arcy who is highlighting a new Bill which means that 9,800 children in receipt of a Domiciliary Care Allowance (DCA), who have a disability, will receive a full medical card.
“There are currently 33,000 parents who receive DCA for their children, but 9,800 of these children currently do not have a full medical card. This Bill rights this wrong and I hope it will of assistance and relieve some of the stress these families experience. “My Fine Gael colleague, the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, introduced the Health
Amendment Bill to Cabinet last week together with Minister Finian McGrath. “I am delighted to see the provision of these 9,800 full medical cards. This was a vital element contained in the Programme for Government and Budget 2017 provided funds to let us carry out our commitment. “Let us not forget that these medical cards are to ease the
burden of children with disabilities and their families. This is progressive move, and I would like to thank all the Wexford people who campaigned for it. “The HSE has been working to produce both a paper-based and online pre-registration system which will be available from 1st May with the scheme going live on 1st June 2017.”
D'Arcy says welfare increases 'modest' step in right direction County Wexford social welfare recipients are going to see increases in their payments to the value of €5 per week, beginning this week. That’s according to Wexford TD, Michael D’Arcy who says that while the increases are modest, this is a step in the right direction. “In Wexford approximately 106,000 social welfare payments are paid out, benefitting people and families right across the county. As promised in Budget 2017, the Minister for Social Protection, Leo Varadkar is introducing €5 increases to all payments, starting this week. “While it’s a modest increase, it’s a step in the right direction. For a lot of people it will be the first increase they have had in 8 years. “This is a really important part
of Fine Gael’s commitment to ensure that everyone benefits from our recent economic success, especially those people who need it most. Fine Gael is working hard to build a fair and compassionate society with thriving communities across every region of Ireland. “The introduction of the increases will be staggered as people receive payments on different days. “This week approximately 19,000 pensioners in Wexford will receive the €5 increase. Almost 12,000 job seekers in the county will also benefit this week, through increases to both Job Seekers Benefit and Job Seekers Allowance. “Next week carers and people with disabilities in Wexford will start to receive the increase. Other groups that will benefit from the increase next
week include lone parents, widows and widowers, those in receipt of the blind pension, amongst others. “Fine Gael is also continuing its focus on improving life for self-employed people. Many people who were used to a PAYE job in the past, moved towards self-employment during or after the recession. “We want to encourage and support those in self-employment. They are the people with the potential to create further employment in towns and villages throughout County Wexford. We have already extended paternity benefit to the self-employed and restored benefits including the invalidity pension, which they can access without a means test if they become sick or injured and can no longer work as a result.
“Minister Varadkar also recently announced changes to the qualification period for the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance (BTWEA) to make it much easier for many one parent families, people with disabilities and farmers to participate. This scheme is designed to encourage people who are unemployed or claiming welfare to set up their own business and continue receiving State income supports for two years, while getting advice and support for running a new business. “Fine Gael is focused on equality of opportunity for all and we want to ensure that everyone who can work, is encouraged to do so. It is great to see that the unemployment rate is now down to 6.6% from a high of 15.1% during the economic crash.

FF seeks more educational psychologists for Wexford Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Mental Health James Browne TD says his party is looking to secure additional educational psychologists for primary and secondary schools in Wexford. Deputy Browne last week revealed that 29 schools in Wexford have been left without a psychologist service. The National Educational Psychological Service works with both primary and postprimary schools and is concerned with learning, behaviour, social and emotional development. “Minister for Education Richard Bruton recently confirmed to Fianna Fáil that NEPS is drastically understaffed. This is leading to a situation where many schools, including 29 in Wexford, have been left without an educational psychologist. This in turn is having a detrimental impact on students as delays in accessing assessments for special education needs is resulting in them missing out on vital learning supports,” explained Deputy Browne. “Fianna Fáil has been raising concerns about the under-staffing of NEPS for some time now. The Confidence and Supply Arrangement we entered into
with Fine Gael contains a specific commitment by the Government to recruit an additional 100 new educational psychologists. We gave a firm commitment that we would deliver on this commitment and we have now tabled a special Dáil debate to do just this. “Wexford has been disproportionately affected by cutbacks to NEPS. There are currently 29 schools in the county without any sort of a psychologist service, which is one of the highest figures in the entire country. The motion we have tabled will help kickstart the recruitment of additional educational psychologists. I will be pushing for Wexford to receive its fair share of this additional allocation. “Ultimately we need to see an increase in learning supports for students who have special educational needs. This can only be achieved if there are educational psychologists in place to identify students who need additional support. This is the only way we can ensure that all children are given the opportunity to reach their full potential. The Government has stalled long-enough on this issue, we now need to see decisive action.”

GER WALSH Banishing the Saints at Wexford Hospital News that the authorities have spent around â‚Ź25,000 to remove the word ‘saint’ from the various wards at Wexford General Hospital will have infuriated the vast majority of people. The annoyance will not necessarily have stemmed from any huge affinity to the Saint’s names which were associated with the wards, although some people will have a strong attachment to the various Saints, but more widely because of the absolute stupidity of prioritising a matter like this at a time when the health service is in absolute crisis. I have heard many complaints about Wexford General Hospital over the years and they have covered almost every aspect of the hospital’s operations. However, no one has said to me: I was in the hospital for a spell recently. Had a terrible time up there. Would you believe I was treated in a ward called Saint Aidan’s? It was very distressing. Set my recovery back by weeks’ Now maybe such people existed but I did not come across them. And can I dare to sug-
gest that if the name on the ward was a concern to someone in the hospital they probably were not all that ill in the first instance. You would imagine that hospital management would have a full agenda of items to address before getting around to deciding to spend money on taking the Saint’s names off the wards. I know that there is a policy to create a more secularist atmosphere in hospitals and I fully appreciate that the Saints are of less relevance or importance to a lot of people than they used to be. However, I’m not sure that they are as irrelevant to people who are seriously ill as some others would like to think. But that is to get away from the more specific point that the whole episode just goes to re-enforce in people’s minds the feeling that the heath service is headless, directionless and has its priorities in a place I will not mention. Will the fact that a person is treated in Aidan’s as opposed to St. Aidan’s mean they will
get better care------NO, will it mean faster admission---- No, Will it have any impact on the treatment outcome—No. Will most people who are seriously ill even notice the name change----- No. Will it cement an impression in the minds of many people that public policy in this country is concerned more with placating the concerns of the extremes and minority views than reflecting the more widely held views of ordinary people-------yes it probably will. It will no doubt be argued that that the ₏25,000 or so that it cost to do this job is just a drop in the ocean in terms of the overall running costs of the hospital and that is true, but this attitude is also part of the problem with the health serviced because all these ₏25,000 add up. Tell an elderly person living alone who is granted an hour of home help a day that ₏25,000 is a drop in the ocean. Look how that money could have transformed the lives of some of these people who depend on Home Help?

Carry on wasting water So Fianna fail is opposed to anyone being charged for water, even those who waste massive amounts by leaving taps turned on or failing to fix faulty connections. It’s a sort of wasters’ charter but not of course if you are one of those who has had to provide your own water by sinking a well or joining a group water scheme I’m afraid folks you guys are just going to have to pay more in your taxes so that
some other people can waste away on what everyone agrees is a very precious commodity. This it seems is ‘new politics’. It does ‘t much seem like new politics to me but the politics of spineless people who will do anything to advance their chances of winning power at the next election. I suppose we should not be too surprised given that this particular effort is being led
by Barry Cowan, a brother of ex-Taoiseach Brian, who led the country off a cliff when he was in charge and then headed off with a rather large pension. But do not be fooled. Water will have to be paid for. The only question is as to how it should be paid for. The direction in which we seem to be heading is to have the so called squeezed middle pay for it through increases in general taxation.

The problem of litter, particularly in rural areas, is an ever increasing one. Anytime you talk to people who live outside the towns you soon realise it’s one of their biggest concerns and if you drive along any country road it is easy to see the reason they are so annoyed. Public representatives are also really concerned about the problem but often feel as if they are banging their heads off a brick wall. The plan to name and shame those found guilty of committing a litter offence is the latest initiative to be faced with a roadblock. Somehow the authorities have managed to tie themselves up in complete knots about this, so much so that the names of those convicted in the courts are even blanked out in documents circulated internally to councillors. The official line is that to include the names would be to contravene the Data Protection Act. That’s
because the Data Protection Officer is investigating Dublin City Council because they posted pictures of dumpers, which had been captured on CCTV, on a notice board. As a result of this investigation the Department instructed all local authorities to stop publishing lists of names of people convicted under the Litter Pollution Act 1997 The Data Protection Officer and indeed the Department have little to do. If someone is convicted of an offence in court it is a matter of public record and it is crazy, for instance, that the Council could not publish the names of those convicted on their Web Site. They could leave them up for thirty days after the court and then take them down. It seems to be another case where the State is firmly on the side of the wrongdoer while doing little to try to ensure that those trying to
tackle rural and urban dumping are encouraged and supported. Meanwhile, a look at the statistics compiled by the Council gives a pretty clear indication as to why the problem is getting worse right across the county. In 2009 there were 1,906 reports of illegal dumping and the complaints resulted in 345 fines being issued. Last year the number of complains had increased to 2,345 but the number of fines issued had dropped to 274. One of the reason it seems is that the dumpers are getting cleverer and are not leaving anything which could identify them in the discarded rubbish. It’s a wonder the Data Protection officer and the Department do not go one step further and insist on Council Officers going around blind-folded, just in case they did recognise any offenders. Meanwhile, the countryside is being destroyed.

Lifestyle Gorey turns out in force for Night Run in aid of Hospice A huge crowds took to the streets of Gorey last Thursday nighty for the town's second Nigh Run. This year the runners (and walkers) took a different route which included some of the newer parts of the town.
There was a great atmosphere as the huge bank of participants set off on the run. All the monies raised are being delivered straight to North Wexford Hospice with a number of generous sponsors covering all the costs of organising the event.

44th IRHA AGM and Conference
Haulage Association on its way back to Wexford IRHA’s 44th AGM & Conference scheduled to transform Wexford Town The Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA), Ireland’s representative body for licensed road haulage operators, is scheduled to host its AGM and annual conference in Clayton Whites Hotel, Wexford on the 24th and 25th of March. This is the second IRHA AGM that will take place in the home county of the current President Ms Verona Murphy, who is looking forward to welcoming members and sponsors to the event. The weekend will be sponsored by Wright Insurance Brokers, the specialist Irish haulage insurance broker, who will host an insightful haulage seminar during the IRHA conference. Tony Wright, CEO Wright Insurance Brokers commented, ‘We look forward to sharing insights with our clients and
IRHA members around the latest insurance issues facing the sector. The agenda includes a feature on Brexit & Insurance by leading economist Jim Power. David Snow, fraud lecturer & investigator will present Insurance Fraud - The Impact.’ The IRHA’s traditional commercial display will be featured to the picturesque backdrop of the quayside supported by the weekend truck sponsors Westward Scania, who will roll out The New Truck Generation from Scania. President of the IRHA Ms Verona Murphy commented; “We are very much looking forward to hosting our national AGM and conference in Wexford Town this year. While there will be plenty for attendees to see and do during the course of the weekend, there will also be
important decisions to be made by the membership in regards to the currently challenging operating conditions within the sector; primarily Brexit and all it entails. The IRHA intends to be the licenced road hauliers “voice in Brexit” over the coming months and years. In terms of future proofing the industry, the Association will be gathering information over the 24th and 25th of March on the current effects of Brexit and insurance. With 95% of freight in Ireland moved via road transport and the licensed haulage industry moving 80% of that freight, implementing effective industry successive plans are vital. The IRHA will continue in its efforts to assist its members long after the conference weekend has concluded.

Time to start doing those jobs around the house With St. Patrick’s Dday just around the corner and the countdown to Easter well underway thoughts will turn to preparing you Home and Garden for the brighter and hopefully better days ahead as we look forward to longer evenings and warmer days. The darker days of winter take their toll on the garden and now is the time to get started on all the important work necessary to prepare for the new season. It’s time to clear away the debris which will have built up over the winter months and start sowing the bulbs and plants which will mature into the summer. But it’s not just outside the house that people pay attention to at this time of the year. Springtime is also
the time to look at doing jobs inside the house like painting the living room, retiling the kitchen or bathroom, upgrading the bedroom-----------all the jobs that you had been thinking about over the winter but now want to take action on. You may want to do some home catering for a First Communion or Confirmation this year so it’s an ideal time to take on those jobs that you have constantly postponed. Apart from the special occasions Summer is generally a time when people do more entertaining at home and now is the time to start getting the work done so everything is in place to enable you to fully enjoy the good weather which hopefully lies ahead.

PROSLIDE, a leading Irish based supplier of sliding door systems and wardrobes and ACME Blinds have joined forces to offer what Tony Breen, owner of the combined venture at John Street, New Ross, describes as ‘modern based solutions to our customers supported by knowledge of the market combined with professional design and personal involvement’ He added: It is a pleasure to work with such a customer orientated manufacturer where the satisfaction of the end user is so paramount. The personal interest which Proslide take in each and every project is very

reassuring to me’ ‘Evolution is the key to creating a timeless product and styles and designs need to be reimagined to create something that stands the test of time. That is the ethos behind Proslide as the company uses SPS software to enable customers to visualise their personal needs and expectations and the 3D technology does the rest by creating an inspired and modern interior design. Each project is carefully made to measure and our guarantee of satisfaction offers the customer peace of mind as well as a flawless product’, Tony adds. Tony has been involved in the sliding wardrobe business for many years and
is therefore in a very good position to access the merits of Proslide. He says: I have been terribly impressed with all aspects of this manufacturer and in particular the quality of the products used. We will be using a similar panel and system to all the top suppliers but instead of steel we will use a quality aluminium profile which is far superior. We are offering this at a lower price than some of our competitors charge for steel and this is a real plus for our customers. Tony and his family are well known throughout the county and beyond through his ACME Blinds business which is one of the most respected in the business.
