Kehoe announces building programme

Major shortage of school places Wexford children travel to New Ross and Enniscorthy

As the government announced a big funding boost for schools across Co. Wexford as part of a major national building programme it has emerged that there is a looming second-level school places crisis in Wexford town with parents being forced to send their children to schools in New Ross and Enniscorthy.

On Tuesday Minister Paul Kehoe announced that seven schools in the country were to benefit as part of a major schools building programme.

The funds are being provided for the Vocational College, Bunclody, Meanscoil Gharman, Enniscorthy, St. Canice’s Convent, New Ross, Bridgetown College, Loreto Secondary

School, Wexford, St. Joseph’s BNS, Gorey and Wexford Educate Together N.S. Minister Kehoe said he was very aware of the pressing need to provide more school places in Wexford in order to continue to meet the accommodation requirements of a growing school population.

‘This funding will facilitate the provision of more school places in Wexford and this significant investment will also support direct and indirect jobs in Wexford’, he added.

The announcement came just a day after members of the Wexford Borough District Council heard details of the scale of the problem emerging in the town in relation to second

level school places.

And the Mayor of the District Ger Carthy has now asked Cllr George Lawlor, who highlighted the problem, to arrange a meeting with the Minister so that details of the problem and the need for action can be outlined at the highest level.

Cllr Lawlor produced startling figures at the meeting which show that every single second level school in Wexford town now has a long waiting list. In the CBS and St. Peter’s the waiting list is far higher than the total number of places so the vast majority of those waiting have no hope of finding a place.

The problem is particularly acute for boys, councillor Lawlor told the meeting and it

had reached an absolute crisis with the Vocational College reporting a waiting list for the first time.

The Labour councillor said a lack of school places could pose serious problems for the town if people coming to the area to run businesses could not find a place in school for their children.

A report on the issue has been commissioned and the matter is due to be discussed at Co. Council level but councillor Lawlor said the problem was now too urgent and needed to be taken up directly by the Borough District Council.

He agreed to use his position to organise a meeting with the Minister for Education.

Councillors want a well lit clear path to the pub A safe passage to the pub is a very important priority for public representatives in Gorey.

In fact it was one of their top priorities when they met for the November gathering of the Gorey Municipal District Council this week.

They want pedestrian crossings to take people right up to the doors of pubs, new streets lights to brighten up the path to the pub and urgent repairs to lights already in place when they go out of action.

It was the Bridge Bar in Gorey itself which concerned Robbie Ireton. He wanted a pedestrian crossing close to a round-a-about in the area moved

so it would bring people closer to the pub door.. People were walking straight across the road anyway and ignoring the existing crossing because it was in the wrong place, he told his colleagues.

When Malcolm Byrne suggested that perhaps getting to the pub was the main reason Robbie wanted the pedestrian crossing moved Robbie was unapologetic. In Riverchapel the crossing went straight to the pub door and it was the same story in Camolin.

However, the Top Table wasn’t too sympathetic. Director of Services Annette O’Neill pointed out that the Council

could not put a pedestrian crossing in a dangerous place on a roundabout. If people wanted to put themselves in danger that was their business but the Council could not assist them.

Cllr Anthony Donohoe is having trouble with the new App which is used to report faulty street lights. He reported a faulty light on two occasions recently, got confirmation that his complaint had been logged, and then nothing.

But when he was asked for the location of the light he went strangely silent. He didn’t really want to say. A first his colleagues thought it might be a light outside his own house, but

then the penny dropped. ‘It’s outside a pub isn’t it’ said the Chairman Malcolm Byrne.

Anthony didn’t reply, but his knowing smile confirmed everything. It was outside a pub and it could even have been his local.

When Councillor John Hegarty raised the issue of a street light which had been a problem for some time he said he was a bit scared to say where it was. Yes it was close to a pub.

With the festive season just around the corner Gorey’s councillors are doing everything in their power to ensure that their constituents get to the pub safely and on time. Cheers!

The introduction of a high/low two way traffic system through Ballycanew village would not be feasible or safe, engineers have decided.

But one member of Gorey’s Municipal District Council has asked whether they think the current traffic plan though the village is safe and he agreed with Malcolm Byrne that it was the most dangerous highly trafficked piece of road in North Wexford.

Councillors are demanding that something be done to improve sight lines through the

village and Cllr Hegarty had suggested the high/low two way system some months ago.

But that has now been firmly knocked on the head by engineers. The have also looked at the costings for a roundabout in the village and have put a €250,000 price tag on the project.

The one promise which the engineers did make was to upgrade the village pedestrian crossing in the New Year.

However, councillors are not satisfied and want upgrade work for the village to be given top priority.

Traffic problems for residents Residents of Whiterock View in Wexford town are facing a living nightmare as a result of traffic problems in their area.

The problems range from illegal parking on big match days at Wexford Park to the use of the road by boy-racers late at night.

Frustrated residents now want the Council to take action to deal with their problems. They sought a

meeting with the Borough District Council to air their concerns.

However, when it emerged that no formal issues had been raised with engineers it was decided a deputation to the Council would be premature.

Mayor Ger Carthy said he would organise a meeting with the residents and the engineers to

Wexford to The Raven Walkway Plans have been drawn up to create a public walkway from Ferrybank in Wexford town through Wexford’s Sloblands to The Raven Point and on to Curracloe.

It is estimated that the facility could be a smash hit with walking tourists but the project faces many hurdles, not least the fact that it would run through a protected habitat and could interfere with the White Fronted Geese who spend the

winter months on the Wexford Sloblands.

Details of the proposal were unveiled by Engineer Gerry Forde at a meeting of the Wexford Borough District Council and he revealed that everything possible will be done to try to make the walkway a reality and that could involve opening it only during the summer months when the White Fronted Geese are absent.

New plans for Yankee Slipway An area of land opposite Ely Hospital in Wexford town known as the old Yankee Slipway, which was used during the First World War, is to be developed as an amenity area with a memorial to the war.

Details of the plans were unveiled at a meeting of the Wexford Borough District Council this week.

They were contained in a presentation on coastal matters and Wexford Harbour by engineer Gerry Forde.

He pointed out that the area in question was exactly half way between the town centre and Crosstown cemetery and would be an idea stop off point for people walking from the town to the cemetery.

The plans for the area will come back to councillors for approval and while there was a broad welcome for the proposed development Cllr Deirdre Wadding said she would like to see the focus on a peace memorial rather than commemorating a war.

Majority of councillors support NAMA auction Gardai Gorey councillors have pledged their support for the Gardai and strongly criticised protesters who caused mayhem at a NAMA auction in the town last week.

But there was one dissenting voice with Sinn Fein’s Fionntán O’Sulleabhain criticising the use of a baton by a Garda during the incident.

He said he would not join in supporting an action which he suggested was clearly wrong given that it was the subject of an enquiry.

However, Councillor John Hegarty said that just because there was an investigation it did not mean that the action

was wrong.

Two councillors were at the auction, Robbie Ireton and Pip Breen. Both denounced the conduct of the protestors which they described as a renta-crowd who had been bussed in from other parts of the country.

Cllr. Breen said the abuse which Cllr Ireton had been subjected to was appalling, so bad in fact that he could not repeat it. Councillor Ireton said that the sad part was that if the auction had been allowed to go ahead some deserving families could have been housed in some of the units before Christmas.

P.O. Banking to boost rural towns – D’Arcy Senator Michael D’Arcy, has said that An Post’s plans to offer banking services will be a major boost, particularly to those in rural towns where banks have closed.

“The move means that more than 1,000 post offices nationwide are set to challenge the main banks by offering value payment accounts.

“An Post aims to offer

debit cards, full access to ATMs and point-of-sale facilities. It is also planning to allow its new current account customers to set up standing orders and direct debits from the new account.

“An Post’s payment account would also be accessible over the internet, by phone and by using an app.

“I understand that An Post is engaging with the

Department of Finance and will consult with the Minister for Communication, Energy and Natural Resources, Alex White before the necessary legislation will be drafted “I hope that these consultations take place as quickly as possible so that legislation can be progressed and people can begin banking with An Post in their local town.”

Gorey already planning for Summer The Christmas festivities have yet to be launched but already they are planning for Gorey’s Market House Festival, the highlight of the summer in Gorey.

There has been a major review of the running of the festival following complaints from some traders about the closure of

streets for last year’s event and other concerns.

Now it is full scale ahead for next year’s festival which will be held on the August Bank Holiday weekend. The Council will continue to spearhead the event with Business Representatives and Cultural Groups.

Gorey Town Manager, Amanda Byrne, who provided details of the festival review to councillors this week expressed her desire to make the Market House Festival the leading summer event in the South East.

Councillors have fired a warning shot in the direction of Fianna Fail general election candidates who are attempting to use Council meetings as a launch platform for their election campaigns.

Under protocol rules each member of the Council is entitled to submit two motions for discussion at each meeting. However, Fine Gael councillor Larry O’Brien suggested at the November meeting of the Council that this be reduced to just a single motion at least

until after the general election.

Fianna fail candidates Malcolm Byrne and James Browne each had two motions before the meeting and the Fianna Fail Council grouping objected to the move. But Fine Gael’s Paddy Kavanagh backed his colleague and there was also support from the Fianna Fail Chairman of the Council, Tony Dempsey.

James Browne said Fine Gael were attempting to bring in the rule because they did

not have any candidates on the Council and wanted to protect their Oireachtas members.

And when it was pointed out that the Chairman could not take a motion to this effect under Standing Orders Cllr Dempsey sought the agreement and goodwill of councillors to just submit a single until after the election.

However, it is likely that the Chairman’s plea will fall on deaf ears.

News Election Notebook Special The People's Debate A real debate with real people, but was it the real Wexford?

As soon as the cameras stopped rolling at the People’s Debate last week there was anxiousness among the participants about how it had all gone.

Wexford was a bit unique because with two TDs standing down at the next election there could only ever have been three of the five TDs on the panel and with government Ministers Brendan Howlin and Paul Kehoe saying ‘No Thanks’ that left only Mick Wallace on the main panel.

Across the country these debates are packed with supporters of left wing candidates and they are very hostile places for government TDs. Wexford was no different and it was clear from the start that this was a left wing audience interested solely in a left wing agenda.

It could be argued that politics in Ireland is changing but it is difficult to believe that this audience in any way reflected the real Wexford electorate.

There are a number of arguments to support this view but here are just two. Co. Wexford’s economy is underpinned by two main industries, farming and tourism.

The vast bulk of employment and wealth generation in the country can be traced back to either of these two industries.

There was not a single mention of tourism during the 110 minute debate and farming was vaguely mentioned once.

Instead this was a sort of a Liveline with cameras. People relating stories of personal tragedy which at times seemed so extraordinary that they stretched credibility. Book of Wexford songs and poems by the late Tom Williams launched Almost 300 people from all over County Wexford gathered in Greenacres last Thursday evening for the launch of a new book of 30 original songs and poems about County Wexford and its people.

‘A Voice From Out The Crowd’, which comprises compositions all written by the

The book was launched by Wexford author and playwright, Billy Roche, who said that throughout his life, Tom Williams gave more to

Wexford hurling great, Nickey Rackard; ‘A Civil War Lament’, a song about the healing powers of the GAA following The Civil War; and ‘Wexford – Our Homeland’, one of a number of anthems he penned about the county.

Other songs and poems include dedications to another former hurling great, George O’Connor; the balladeer and author of ‘Boolavogue’ and ‘Kelly the Boy from Killane’, PJ McCall; and the late independent councillor from Broadway, Leo Carty.

There is an extra special section in the book devoted to Jim Hawkins from Ambrosetown, a great rural

character, wit, naturally gifted storyteller and comedian, which ends with a humorous ballad written by Williams about the famous bombing of Hawkins’ cottage by a German bomber during The Second World War. Three of Tom Williams’ songs were performed by a number of well-known balladeers and singers on the night. Phil Berry was joined by his brother, Paddy, son Ronan and John O’Byrne in a rendition of ‘The Councillor from Broadway’ about Leo Carthy; Pat O’Callaghan from Taghmon sang a combination of ‘A Fairday in Taghmon’ and ‘The Village of Taghmon’; and

Norman plans

News Co. Council Diary Climate Change-------itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all down to the cows, says Robbie â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I take it you are against cows fartingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. That was the rather unexpected declaration from the Chairman Tony Dempsey, as the Co. Council concluded a debate on the climate change issue at its November meeting.

The matter had been raised in a notice of motion

by Fianna Failâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Malcolm Byrne. He asked his colleagues to note the impact of climate change on Co. Wexford, particularly in the areas of coastal protection and agriculture and to support those who seek an effective outcome to tackle climate change globally at the forthcoming Paris Conference.

But Malcolm went further and wanted an audit undertaken to ensure that the Council itself through its various activities did not contribute to Climate Change.

Climate change is a global issue, but it does have local consequences with the huge Wexford coast line under constant threat from rising

sea.

There was general support for Malcolmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motion and an understanding of the problem, particularly the threat to the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beaches.

But really you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need

any big conferences in Paris to understand the problem, according to Cllr Robbie Ireton. In Wexford and Ireland the real cause of climate

change is the fact that cows are emitting wind from the anus in fields all over the place, or farting, Cllr Ireton told his colleagues.

To be fair to councillors they did not add to the problem of Climate Change at their November meeting.

There was much less hot air than usual and the meeting ended more than an hour ahead of time.

But then some of the more vocal members had a busy night ahead of them as they prepared for Vincent Browneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Debate while all members were preparing themselves for the launch of the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1916 programme and presentation of the Community Awards.

Perhaps the Chairman should ensure that special events are scheduled at teatime every time the Council meets. It would be a great assistance to him in getting through the meetings efficiently and it might even help to combat Climate Change

Exciting developments are set to be unwrapped for Co. Wexford as part of a new Norman Trail which is being planned with the aim of attracting more overseas visitors to the county.

The Norman Trail was discussed early in the year when the French Ambassador visited the county and pledged his support for the project.

However, there had been concern that nothing appeared to have been done to advance the project with Councillor Malcolm Byrne expressing his

extreme disappointment over the situation at the November meeting of the Co. Council.

However, Director of Services Tony Larkin said major plans had been put in place and a lot of work undertaken on the project and it would be unveiled in 2016.

Emanon Hore revealed that a total of thirty Norman sites across the county had been identified and submitted for inclusion as part of a trail and New Ross would be included as an authentic Norman Town..

Mayor Carthy raised the condition of the road which he said was an important route to a village which provided a considerable amount of employment.

When the current works involving the laying of the natural gas pipeline to the village are complete it was

important that the road be given priority and brought up to a proper standard, he told the meeting.

Sinn Fein Councillor Oisin Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Connell called for a protocol to be introduced for future works to ensure that people were informed of when roads would be closed and to provide up to date accurate information about the progress of works.

Then he will be returning to Enniscorthy where the headline event is Santa’s Enchanted Castle which runs until Christmas and looks like being a sell-out.

Christmas in Co. Wexford Enniscorthy Parade and Lights SwitchOn on Saturday November 28th

Wexford on Ice is back this year

Parade to start Wexford town festivities At 6pm on Saturday November 28th. Wexford’s splendid festive lighting display will be officially turned on and the town’s Christmas will come to life.

Building on the success of previous years all of the old favourites will be back and there will be new additions to provide families with a fun packed December.

The lights switch-on will be preceded by a parade from Selskar Square starting at 5pm.

It will make its way down Main Street to Anne Street before moving on to the quay

begin his journey at Dermot Kehoe’s DIY in Woodbine Business Park at 2.00pm.

The New Christmas Lights are funded by the retailers and businesses of New Ross along with additional funding from New Ross Municipal District.

Fergie’s letter to the Muslims and a man-made beach at Ferrybank

The Fianna Fail councillor Fergie Kehoe was ‘on fire’ as they say at a meeting of the Wexford Municipal District Council on Monday.

Fergie is very fond of trying to put the boot in to the current government over social and economic problems in Wexford, even if sometimes the boot flies off his foot and hits

him straight in the face. There was a bit of that this week when he wondered when the county had dropped to the bottom of the table in terms of education, employment levels and income and what was the government doing about it.

Well actually the problem was identified as far back as 2002 and intensified during the

Celtic Tiger years when Fergie’s party were in power, he was informed. And furthermore the government was doing quite a lot to address the issues in the county with Wexford getting very large grants from funds established to deal with social problems.

Fergie fared little better when he made a suggestion about creating a new beach at Ferrybank. A man made structure which are very common on the continent is what Fergie had in mind. A great idea, well maybe not. You see the water quality is not fit for bathing and the creation of the beach at that location might

Wexford Lions Club Exhibition 2016 What’s on in Wexford Arts Centre begins the New Year with our ever popular Open Submission Exhibition in association with Wexford Lions Club and are delighted to announce application details and invite submissions from local artists and anyone with an interest in art regardless of their level of skill or previous experience.

The annual Lions Club exhibition celebrates local talent and offers a platform for artists who are at various stages of their careers as well as those with an interest in art and who wish to see their work realised within a gallery context. For this reason, it is an important show within the Wexford Arts Centre’s programme. The Wexford Lions Club Open

Exhibition will be on view in the lower and upper galleries of Wexford Arts Centre from Saturday 16th January until Saturday 6th February 2015.

As a result of the tremendous success of last year’s show and the remarkably high quality work received, the theme for the 2016 Lions Club exhibition has again been left entirely open.

The open brief allows participants the freedom to create exciting and original artwork, and to tell their own stories. These stories or experiences can be related through a varied range of subjects such as urban and rural narratives, abstraction and even pure imagination.

This year will again feature the Young Lions gallery,

dedicated exclusively to the work of young, budding artists.

Young artists are encouraged to experiment with all types of mediums and objects - paints, glitter, buttons, transfers, lego...the list is endless.

We also wish to promote the talents of local sculptors and those working in three dimensional forms, requesting that these too participate so that we may produce an exhibition which truly encompasses the diverse nature of visual art and the array of talent found within Wexford and its surrounding areas.

Interested persons are asked to complete an application form and collect a cartridge/watercolour paper or canvas from Wexford Arts

Centre. If artists are interested in submitting 3D works, they must also fill out an application form but should note that the work must be no larger than 35(w) x 35(l) x 50(h) cms. Taking into consideration the time needed to produce sculpture particularly when working with materials such as wood, metal and ceramics, we request that sculptors enter work produced over the past 3-5 months and only submit new works not previously shown in a gallery context.

Applications are limited to one per person and as the number of artists participating in the exhibition is limited, applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis.

Hospital’s Annual Service of Remembrance Wexford General Hospital held its annual Service of Remembrance at Clonard Church, on Friday last.

This is the fifth year for this event – feedback from families, staff and the public has been very positive and it appears that the event has really struck a chord with all involved. The purpose of the service is to provide an opportunity for bereaved families and hospital staff to come together to remember loved ones who have died at Wexford General Hospital or who had a strong connection with the hospital - to share memories and to offer each other comfort.

Wexford General Hospital is one of over 40 hospitals who are taking part in the Hospice Friendly Hospitals (HFH) Programme, an initiative of the
