Wexford may be on the verge of huge jobs boost Confidence is growing that a major jobs announcement for Wexford town, involving a leading international company, will be made early in 2016. Intense efforts have been going on behind the scenes for months to secure what is seen as a ‘breakthrough’ company for the town as part of a plan to develop Wexford as a location for digital and

financial operators. While it is understood that nothing has been formally agreed yet and discussions with major companies are always sensitive and can go wrong at any time, no effort is being spared in the effort to land a project for the town early in 2016. A source close to the government told The

Chronicle that the matter was very sensitive but that several hundred jobs were involved. The effort is understood to involve a number of government agencies with Wexford Co. Council also playing a key role. There has been concern for some time that the lack of suitable quality office and commercial space in the town is hindering the effort to attract

blue chip technological companies. The proposed development at Trinity Street on the quayfront is planned to tackle some of this problem and is being designed to attract financial services to Wexford. However, the push is on to provide a more immediate advance in this area and the Department of Environment building at Carricklawn has been identified as the location

Co Wexford is gearing itself for months of massive pageantry and celebration as the countdown to the programme of events to mark the centenary of the Rising begins in earnest on New Year’s Day. It is now been predicted that the event will be a far bigger attraction than anyone anticipated with many people even cancelling their annual Christmas visit home to return the county instead at Easter time. And the event organisers are preparing themselves for a massive Easter Monday turnout out for the

celebrations and commemorations in Enniscorthy.. The event is part of the national commemoration. Enniscorthy District Manager Padraig O’Gorman has revealed that car parking is being organised as far from the town centre as the Mart on the Old Dublin Road in an effort to accommodate the crowds that are now expected. Apart from the ceremony itself there will be a wide variety of attractions along the riverbank including markets (more on page 3)

which provides the answer to the town’s immediate problem in terms of quality office space. Discussions have been going on for some time in respect of this state of the art building with a view to making it available to the private sector. It is understood that staff have been consulted in recent months about a planned

more from the Carricklawn location to Johnstown Castle where hundreds of publicl servants are already employed in the EPA and Department of Agriculture. The availability of this building is seen as an essential part of any drive to bring a high profile employer to the town.

Councillors furious over ‘cut and paste’ Garda letter Members of Wexford Co. Council are furious over the response they have received from the Garda Commissioners’ Office following representations they made over inadequate policing in Gorey. It took Garda bosses four months to reply to the letter from the Co. Council and the quality of the response has been blasted by councillors who had originally raised the issue. John Hegarty and Joe Sullivan said it was simply ‘a cut and paste job’ and a ‘bad cut and paste at that’ Amazingly the letter from Inspector Michael McElgunn for the Superintendent Commissioner’s Office starts off by telling members of Wexford Council where county Wexford is located: The Wexford Garda Division is located in the South Eastern Region’ it states before going on to offer such important information to the public representatives as the fact that Co. Wexford is an

area of 2343 square kilometres. The letter points out that the amalgamation of the new Gorey and Enniscorthy Garda Districts as part of the ‘Garda Siochana Station and District Amalgamation Programme 2012/213 resulted in the creation of a new, enlarged Enniscorthy Garda District’ The letter also tells councillors that ‘Gorey Garda Station remains open on a twenty four hour basis and continues to provide a policing service to the greater Gorey area’ Addressing the specific concerns about Garda levels in Courtown/Riverchapel the later states ‘these have been maintained consistently in line with the above mentioned distribution model, with augmentation as necessary during the summer period’ Councillors believe that the response did not address the concerns about Garda levels in the county at all.

Oylegate drainage ‘urgent’ A job that would cost just €34,000 could unlock development in Oylegate and ease severe problems being endured by some people who are already trading in the area. That is the cost of the sewerage scheme proposed for the village but despite sustained pressure from councillors there is no

immediate prospect of the job getting the go ahead. Cllr Paddy Kavanagh told a meeting of the Enniscorthy Municipal Council that the job was absolutely essential for the village and he sugg4ested that if a deputation to press the case would help one should be organised.

Council plans New Year Sale……….of houses Thousands of local authority tenants could be in line for a New Year bonanza with the houses they are living in becoming available to purchase for a discount of up to 60% of the market value. Depending on the length of time a tenant has lived in a property and their income in addition to a number of other considerations they may be able to purchase a house valued at €100,000 for as little as €40,000. Virtually all standard local authority houses are ‘on the market’ under the scheme and tenants have to have an income of just €15,000 per year to purchase. For several years it has been impossible for local authority tenants to purchase houses following the ending of the old tenant/purchase scheme. Now there is expected to be a flood of applications to purchase under what is

considered a very good scheme for tenants. However, those hoping to make a killing by purchasing the house and then selling it on for a profit will be disappointed because a charge will be attached to each property equal to the level of discount applied and that charge will continue over a period of years. Now detailed leaflets on the scheme are to be prepared for local authority tenants and information sessions are to be set up for those interested in the New Year.

Council’s €70,000 bill to allow public to spend a penny

Wexford town is set to lose at least two of its five Automatic Public Conveniences following a review of usage and the cost of providing the service in the town. With just one of the five APC accessible for wheelchair users and with

two of the APCs thought to have a very low level of usage, council engineers have recommended that only two of the units, at Dunnes Stores in Redmond Square and at Crescent Quay be retained. However, a stay of execution is to be put on a third at Redmond Park

pending a review of how toilet facilities might be provided in the park in the absence of an APC. The five toilets cost €80,000 per year to run but generate income of less than €10,000. Council Engineer Gerry Forde in proposing the planned removal of some of

New Year’s Day kick off for Rising celebrations (Continued from front) The first event of the celebrations takes place on New Year’s Day in St. Aidan’s Cathedral As part of Wexford County Council’s contribution to the national centenary programme, it’s Arts Department commissioned composer Liam Bates to write a piece of music to commemorate 1916. The result is a newly composed choral piece called

“Child of creation” which celebrates the spirit and wonder of childhood in 2016. This new work will have its debut performance at the concert.. The concert, entitled, “Cherish the Children,” will be performed by children’s choirs from County Wexford and the renowned Musici Ireland orchestra, conducted by Liam Bates. Children from schools

in County Wexford: Gaelscoil Charman (Wexford); Scoil Naomh Maodhóg (Ferns); Bunscoil Loreto (Gorey); Presentation (Wexford); Gorey Community School; and County Wexford School of Music.. The concert will be professionally recorded and CDs will be available for sale in early 2016.

Residents to vote on name change Residents of a street in Wexford town will receive ballot papers early in the New Year to decide whether or not the name of the street should be changed. One hundred and eighteen people registered to vote in George’s Street will be issued with ballot papers and it will

require a vote of sixty in favour to change the name to Brennan Street. Under legislation only residents of the street itself are eligible to vote but Cllr Deirdre Wadding told the December meeting of the Wexford Municipal Council that she

believed people all over the town should have a say when it was proposed to change the name of a street. The proposed name change was proposed a year ago by Cllr Tony Dempsey.

the APCs said the money saved could be used instead to provide improved facilities at some of the beach resorts in the Wexford District. Cllr Davy Hynes suggested that business people be asked to co-operate in allowing toilets on their premises to be used by the general public.

He suggested that a type of formal arrangement could be entered into with some traders. Cllr Anthony Kelly said some people were scared to use the APCs and jumped away from them when the doors opened and were scared they might get locked

in. But George Lawlor said there had not been a problem over the years. However, Deirdre Wadding said a woman in the UK had been locked in an APC for four days and had knitted a sweater over the period.

Row over ‘Police’ seats rumbles on The row over representation on the county’s Joint Policing Committee rumbles on with the Gorey district, which has just a single councillor on the JPC pushing to get some Wexford District representatives off the committee. Wexford currently has seven representatives. The matter has been considered by the Council’s Protocol Committee and it has now been discovered that

the requirement for a geographical spread of representation is not satisfied by the current make up of the committee and it will have to be quashed if change is not achieved. Mayor Ger Carthy said a possible solution to the problem would be for Labour’s George Lawlor and one of the Wexford Sinn Fein representatives to give up their seats to party colleagues in the Gorey District. While

Anthony Kelly indicated this would be acceptable Cllr Lawlor rejected the idea. Alternatively the Mayor suggested they could all row in behind his bid to be elected to the Dail and this would create a vacancy on the committee. However, there were no takers for this idea. Cllr Davy Hynes indicated that he would not give up his seat and the matter was allowed stand until after the Christmas break.

Flood Plan objectors told ‘look at the Midlands’

People who raise complaints about some aspects of the Enniscorthy Flood Relief Programme should look at the plight of people in the midlands who have suffered such hardship from flooding in recent weeks, the Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, Paddy Kavanagh has said. Cllr Kavanagh told a meeting of the Council that

some families had suffered terrible damage to their homes and real hardship. In Enniscorthy plans are already well advanced and work is ready to start on the building of the defences that would stop a similar thing happening in the town again. And in a swipe at those who still protest and question aspects of the plan he said they should look at what

had happened elsewhere and realise that this was a major project for the good of the town. Already he said he had noticed several homes and premises along the Island Road being refurbished and he suggested this was probably because people realised that when the work is completed this area will be free from the risk of flooding.

Cllr Kavanagh made his comments as the members were updated on the progress of the town’s Flood Relief Plan. Cllr Keith Doyle said the public representatives in Enniscorthy had been very proactive in relation to the plan and had campaigned for it at a time when flooding problems were much less frequent.

Annual Christmas Concert in Gorey Library

Jimmy is the ghost of Christmas past It was the ghost of Christmas Past, suggested Chairman Paddy Kavanagh, or maybe even Santa Claus without his suit. The arrival of businessman, broadcaster and general man about town, Jimmy Gahan, to the final Enniscorthy Municipal Council meeting of the year caused a little stir of excitement. Once a regular at Enniscorthy Urban Council meetings in the distant past Jimmy has much bigger fish

to fry these days so his arrival was a bit of a shock for the eight members. Indeed they became visibly giddy with excitement as he strode to his seat. Was there something really important on the agenda that they hadn’t noticed? No nothing as important as that. Jimmy had been lured to the Council Chamber with the promise of a Christmas celebration with councillors afterwards.

said that what people wanted was places they could park their own vehicles for most of the day. She told members of the Gorey Municipal District Council that the current system which involved giving people leeway when they were delivering worked well.

Picture: Patrick Browne As Christmas approaches most people are busy with their shopping and festivities but for Leaving Cert class students in schools throughout the county thoughts are turning to where they will move next year when the Leaving Cert results come out and their CAO points are tallied up. It’s a stressful time as the students prepare to fill out the CAO options and as part of the

‘make your mind up’ process many students visit various Third Level institutions around the country to see which would be match their own personal requirements. The most popular Third Level venue for students from Co. Wexford is WIT in Waterford and last week many students from the county visited WIT for their Open Day.

Co. Wexford businesses are celebrating some of the best Christmas trading for years with signs that the recovery is finally at least in part reaching Wexford and the various initiatives aimed at boosting business during the festive season judged a runaway success. . With Co. Wexford spared the worst of the weather traders everywhere are reporting an uplift in business and good Christmas trading. The festive season was given an early kick off in most parts of the county with the switch on of festive lighting brought forward to the end of November in Gorey and New Ross. And there have been special attractions in all the four main towns to help draw people in and keep the people of the county at home to spend their money locally. The Christmas lighting and much of the festivities have been supported by the Co. Council in conjunction with the Chambers of Commerce and Business Groups. This is part of the Council’s

economic initiative to support and develop the retail sector in each of the four main towns. Those individual initiatives were all a big success with the big cash investment in Christmas lighting in Gorey paying dividends as families travelled in their droves to the town. The new big ticket item in Enniscorthy this year was Santa’s Enchanted Castle and it exceeded all expectations with its target number of visitors reached with almost a full weeks to go before its closure. And there has been a very positive response to the experience from visitors with many entering the castle for the very first time. Wexford town has been developing a Christmas festival for the past three years and the new addition in 2015 was the Santa Train which proved very popular. With the Christmas rush now at an end its Sale Time with some shops even opening on St Stepehn’s Day to offer bargains.

GER WALSH With TV shows and newspapers everywhere ending the year by naming their various personalities of 2015 I thought I’d take the opportunity to hand out a few awards myself, so here it goes.

The Barack Obama Award For Greatest Contribution To Saving The Planet: There were not many contenders in Wexford for this to be honest. It’s the local emphasis on politics which rules most people out. Speeding cars going past a school in Ballymurn or a broken footpath outside Bunclody Cemetery will not put you in the frame for this one. There were only two contenders really and both come from North Wexford. Obviously saving the planet is a bit more important up there. Malcolm Byrne put the climate change issue firmly on the Co. Council agenda and put himself into the reckoning but his challenge was demolished by Councillor Robbie Ireton. Robbie was not in Paris for the recent conference but had he been it probably would not have taken as long to come up with a plan. As

far as Robbie is concerned the whole thing is down to cows farting. Find a way of dealing with that and you have gone a good way to solving the climate change problem. His colleagues may have laughed when he came up with his words of wisdom at a Co. Council meeting but there is some scientific evidence to support Robbie’s view (well at least partly support it) Robbie will receive his award in the White House in March with the IFA sponsoring his trip.

The Conor McGreggor Award for Best Fighting Talk Outside A Cage There was no contest here. The runaway winners were the current Mayor of Wexford Ger Carthy and his predecessor George Lawlor. When Carthy revealed he was putting an end to the practice of spending public money g to pay for a night out at the Opera for the Mayor’s friends and supporters George went ballistic. His outburst led to the most heated exchanges ever seen in a

Council Chamber in Wexford. George thought the whole thing was casting a reflection on previous Mayors who had treated their pals to fine dining and the best of seats at the Opera but the Mayor, was having none of it and stuck to his guns and refused to take a party to the Opera. Happily the two appear to have put the incident behind them and no rematch is planned.

The Dr. James Reilly Going Backwards Is Really Making Progress Award This award goes to Irish Rail. As road improvements take more and more time off the journey by car and bus between Wexford and Dublin the national rail company has prepared a new timetable for the Rosslare Dublin route. Its effect is to increase the rail journey time between this county and Dublin,

9 The Louis van Gaal ‘ Spending Millions To Achieve Very Little Award

This has to go to the management of the HSE. With millions and millions more poured into the system in recent years there is very little evidence of any real improvement in the service. Even really modest targets for some pretty basic tests are being missed and the trolley crisis just gets worse, if not in terms of numbers then in the horror stories that have been emerging of terminally ill patients just being abandoned in various A&Es The Award will be presented by the Manchester United Manager at Old Trafford and fifty HSE managers are expected to travel over for the event taking a large corporate box to enjoy a game. The cost will be covered from the HSE Medical Card fund where savings are expected next year.

The Bertie Ahern ‘It Has Nothing To Do With Me Award’

This has to go to Bishop Denis Brennan for his wonderful and skilful defusing of the rumblings of discontent which followed the departure of Fr. Jim Fegan from his post of administrator in Wexford town on ‘promotion’ to Parish Priest of Ballindaggin. When people in Wexford, where Fr Jim was hugely popular, expressed annoyance at his ‘banishment’ the Bishop quickly explained that really it had nothing to do with him. As per the rules he merely offered the vacant PP post to the most senior priest without a parish in the diocese and Jim accepted Ballindaggin.

Although he had much competition, TD Mick Wallace, is the winner, following another year of knocking just about everything that stood up. NAMA was wrong, the people

who set up NAMA were wrong, the committee investigating NAMA was wrong, the Americans are wrong, the government is wrong, the Judge was wrong but Mick himself was not wrong when he refused to give evidence to a Dail committee. He was not wrong either when he broke the law at Shannon Airport or when he refused to pay the fine imposed for the offence by the court.

It’s all about ‘sucking devices’ as Cllrs say farewell to 2015 Whether Robbie Ireton was ever in the boy scouts or not he is certainly a man who believes in being prepared and a key part of being prepared is to have ‘sucking devices’ at the ready. Robbie made his comments as councillors in Gorey said farewell to 2015. Mention of a sucking device was enough to reduce Chairman Malcolm Byrne to uncontrolled laughter and other members were not much better. Antony Donohoe wondered exactly what type of ‘sucking device’ Robbie

had in mind because the Labour councillor wanted the officials to prepare a list of everyone in North Wexford who had a ‘sucking device’ so they could be called into action if needed. By this time there was more laughter in the Chamber than at the Christmas panto, but Robbie was serious. There was a plan to deal with snow and blizzards but there was nothing to deal with floods. The people with these ‘suckling devices’ could be called in to action to pump out flood water, or blow it out

as the case may be. Great idea Robbie, but the Council is unlikely to be lining up the ‘sucking devices’ of North Wexford any time soon. Farmers and all sorts of people with suitable machinery are called into action to clear roads in the event of snow and they are paid for the work they do. But that’s ok because it is only a four or five yearly event while floods happen almost every month during the winter so the cost would be prohibitive. So the sight of ‘sucking devices’ on every

side-road in North Wexford will have to wait a little longer. Strangely Robbie didn’t propose any sucking solution for the problems encountered by travellers on a narrow bridge on a rural road in Castletown. Joe Sullivan raised serious concerns about the problem and the need to do something about it, fearing a fatality. But Robbie wasn’t as concerned. The road had been flooding for years and everyone knew the problem was there. So what about it!

Switching off the lights to take a photgraph Gorey’s stunning Christmas street lights were a big hit with visitors to the town this year and now they may be featured on an official Town Christmas card in the future. Fine Gael councillor Anthony Donohoe has suggested that in the early hours of the morning the actual street lights should be turned off for a short period to allow photographs to be taken of just the Christmas lights in all their glory. Cllr. Donohoe suggested that the lights could be used for a Gorey Christmas Card next year. His proposal has

been taken up by the local Municipal District Council. Meanwhile they are already looking forward to Christmas 2016 in the town following the unprecedented success of the lights switch on this year. They had expected 1,500 people to turn up but in the event there were more than 8,000 people on the streets of the town that evening. Next year there will be a parade to mark the event and a stage so that entertainment can be viewed by everyone in the crowd.

Speeding cars can’t stop at end of motorway Speeding cars are smashing in to the roundabout which marks the end of the motorway on the Gorey by-pass because they are failing to slow down in time. Despite a range of warning signs and other

measures it appears that many motorists fail to heed the warnings and are unable to stop as they hit the roundabout.. The problem has become acute for a local landowner who has an entrance near the

roundabout and has been lucky to escape with his life on occasions. But engineers do not see any easy solution because the motorway is full of warning signs already but they seem to have little effect on some motorists.

The problem will be solved in a couple of years’ time when the motorway is extended to the South of Oylegate. The extension to the motorway will start 1 1/2kms up from the roundabout and that

stretch of road will then become a national road rather than a motorway. However, that will present its own problems because as things stand there is no legislation to change a road from a motorway to a national

road so the change will require national legislation. In the meantime the problem of cars smashing into the roundabout at the end of the existing Gorey by-pass is likely to continue.

Enniscorthy celebrates Bronze Medal for Tidy Town A very pleasant soirée was held in Holohan’s Pub, Slaney Place, Enniscorthy, on Thursday night, 17th December. It was a celebratory occasion to mark Enniscorthy’s achievement in winning a Bronze Medal in this year’s National Tidy Town Competition. It was a unique occasion as Enniscorthy never previously won a national award in the competition. The attendance included members of Enniscorthy Tidy Town Association, Cllr. Paddy Kavanagh, Chairman of the Enniscorthy District Council, Pádraig O’ Gorman, Enniscorthy District Manager, Cllr. J. Mythen,

members of the Council’s outdoor staff, members of the Tidy Town’s and the Council’s Community Employment Schemes, Gateway Scheme and the Volunteers who week after week came out to pick litter and keep Enniscorthy tidy. The Chairman of the Tidy Town Association speaking to our reporter said “The winning of the Bronze Medal was a great achievement after years of trying. It was due to co-operation of the Council, Tidy Town Association and the hard work of many people including the Council staff, the Community Employment Schemes’ staff,

Gateway Scheme operatives and our enthusiastic volunteers. We are now heading towards realms of great excitement with the strong possibility of achieving Silver and Gold Medals and then the highest accolade of all – the tidiest town in the Republic. Everyone in the town can be part of the success story by keeping the surrounds of their business premises and homes clean and tidy.” Seán Doyle, Tidy Town Secretary said “In the New Year it is essential that representatives of the Tidy Town Committee meet with Council Officials and draw up a planned methodical

programme of work to address some of the issues highlighted in the Adjudicator’s Report. By now is well known what is needed and it shouldn’t be beyond the resourcefulness of the people involved to realise it and reach the top” Council Chairman, Paddy Kavanagh praised all who helped to win the Bronze medal and he could assure everyone involved that the Council will give every support to the cause of a clean and tidy Enniscorthy. The happy occasion concluded with savoury food and refreshments
