ALİ GÜRELİ Chairman Yönetim Kurulu Başkanı As we are celebrating the 12th edition of CI, we are leaving behind a year that has been challenging and yet, made us stronger and more hopeful about the future. We are happy because even in a year like this, art’s healing and connecting power has prevailed yet again.
Art is purifying, uplifting and compelling to the human soul. We, as humans, are transcended in front of art, just like we do with religion in every sense of the word. Its narrative and form may vary; but eventually it will take its shape in this truth of the matter.
We are all aware that the essence of contemporary art is profoundly political. It is not only completely malleable to the impacts of social, historical and political formations, but also embodies, transforms and reproduces them. It utilizes all of its critical capacity in this direction. Even so, this quality of contemporary art does not make it anything beyond art. Contemporary art is an artistic answer to everyday realities that surrounds us. Although it incorporates it all, it still exists in its authentic, individualistic ways. This is what makes contemporary art so powerful. It moves beyond the matters of daily life, and opens the doors of a peaceful and tolerant world through its critical narrative. This is why we need contemporary art more than ever now.
We have developed the 12th edition of CI with these ideals and beliefs. We wanted the fair to be an answer to the chaos that surrounds our world. With this idea in mind, we are implementing a fair that is completely refreshed and ultimately engaging. Following the success of Collectors’ Stories exhibition which featured 120 artworks from 60 leading Turkish contemporary art collections, for the first time, during CI last year; we are launching the Collectors’ Stories book as the first project of CI Publications. Curated personally by the collectors themselves, this exhibition book will be distributed across leading art organizations and institutions worldwide. The architectural design of CI was conceptualized and implemented by world-renowned and award winning firm Tabanlıoğlu Architects. As an extension of the imagined concept of the fair, we will be opening a sculpture exhibition on the Artists’ Park called “The Fifth Element”. With the collaboration of Şişli Municipality, this will be the first contemporary sculpture exhibition that will take place on a public park, bringing together both local and international artists. Moreover, our new media art section Plugin and our series of panel discussions, CI Dialogues will continue with exciting and inspirational themes. I would like to thank everyone who has made CI what it is today at its 12th edition, and wish you all an enjoyable fair.

KAMİAR MALEKİ Director Direktör We are very excited to welcome you to the 12th edition of Contemporary Istanbul (CI). Istanbul is an important global arts hub that has championed both regional and international art. Today CI is not only an international art platform; it directly puts Turkish art on the global map as well as it is the sole medium conveying the global art to Turkey. Attracting the world’s finest artists and galleries brings us one step closer to our mission.
I, therefore, would like to give a very personal welcome to the fantastic array of international galleries who are celebrating the 12th edition of CI with us: Leila Heller Gallery from New York & Dubai, Victoria Miro from London, Galleria Continua from San Gimignano to name only a few. I would also like to welcome our first two African galleries, Gallery 1957 from Accra, Ghana and SMAC Gallery from Cape Town, South Africa. Also, showing for the first time are Plan B from Cluj & Berlin as well as Nicodim Gallery from Bucharest & Los Angeles. Young project spaces like Maximilian William will also debut in this year at CI: Emphasizing our continued commitment in making great art more accessible.
Bringing on-board major collectors, curators and dealers; our selection committee has evolved, too. This year, we are delighted to welcome Mr. Alexander Heller (Leila Heller Gallery), Mr. Kemal Cıngıllıoğlu (collector) and Mr. Simon De Pury (collector/advisor/auctioneer). Our ability to attract the “who’s who” of the art world is a great testament to Istanbul, and its enormous attraction.
For the first time this year CI has worked with Tabanlıoğlu Architects to design a whole new fair experience that we are sure will inspire you. With the addition of CI PARK, we are bringing back the neighbourhood feel through communal green spaces where people meet and culture happens, right in the heart and soul of the city. Art in the Park is also a celebration of this idea. It constitutes the first open air sculpture show of this size including artists of this calibre. In addition, we are continuing our acclaimed CI Dialogues program, which we plan to perpetuate through talks and discussions throughout the year to engage on-going conversations around art. We are also happy to bring fore new media arts in the context of Plugin, which showcases exciting new works and technology projects throughout the fair. Our aim is simple: To create a boutique art fair that is not to be missed. We look forward to sharing this with you in the city that delivers culture, history, mystery and excitement: Istanbul.
Art in the Park (Parkta Sanat), bu fikrin bir kutlaması niteliğinde.

CI DIALOGUES 2017
CI DIALOGUES 2017
This year’s CI Dialogues, the fair’s discussion and talk series, will mainly focus on the topic of “Movement” from the artistic perspective. It will discuss the topic in relation to different disciplines that make the core of human daily life, such as technology, architecture, space, and food. Inviting key personalities of related topics, the program will bring together academicians, architects, artists, professionals to review the state of contemporary art along with its relation with other creative industries and daily life.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 AND FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 ART & TECHNOLOGY I: HUMAN AESTHETICS IN FUTURE TECHNOLOGIES This panel will examine the ways human aesthetics, as we acknowledge it today, experiences a shift with the development of robotics and artificial intelligence. Aesthetics has always been linked with the human’s ability to feel emotions. Thus, could we consider aesthetics as something that is only related to the “human space”? If not, how do we frame it in a postspace, hyper-technologized society? Within the context of contemporary art, we will discuss the possibility of aesthetics outside of an object-oriented discourse. We will also question the existence of an immaterialized information aesthetics, which presents a new format parallel to reality. Hence, we will be discussing if it is possible to consider technology as unlinked from the organic. Or conversely we will suggest the “non-organic world” is indeed “organic”, and that “aesthetics” is actually something that simply grow from its same, organic, roots? 14 September Thursday 14:00 - 15:30
ART & TECHNOLOGY II: NEW SPACE OF CREATIVE TECHNOLOGIES AND ITS IMPACT ON HUMAN LIVES In the recent past, human beings could not even imagine concepts such as virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence, yet many more have become routine of human life. Creative technologies are shaping today and the future and inevitably they effect persons daily lives and their way of expressing themselves. At CI Dialogues’ next panel, we will discuss today’s and tomorrow’s routines in wider perspective. 14 September Thursday 16:00 - 17:00
14 EYLÜL PERŞEMBE VE 15 EYLÜL CUMA SANAT VE TEKNOLOJİ I: GELECEK TEKNOLOJİLERİNDE İNSAN ESTETİĞİ Bu panel, insan estetiğinin günümüzde kabul görmüş halini, robotik ve yapay zekanın gelişimi ile değişen deneyimlerini inceleyecek. Estetik, her zaman insanoğlunun duyguları hissetme yeteneğiyle ilişkilendirilmiştir.

ART & COLLECTING AT BLOOMBERG HT
BLOOMBERG HT’DE SANAT VE KOLEKSİYONERLİK: BİR SANATSAL HAFIZA YARATIMI, SANAT KOLEKSİYONU
As a storyteller of the modern world, art is writing a history of the past and the future in the hands of connoisseurs. Art, as a self-expression form from past to present, comes alive in wide range of disciplines from architecture to literature. Thus, we will be looking for some answers in CI Dialogues to the questions like what is art, how can it be collected and how do we need to look at an art piece.
14 September Thursday 17:30 - 18:30
ART & FOOD: THE INTERCONNECTED ART OF TASTE
Mankind has been seeking the real taste for ages. Once they harvested the one has found, finally settled down. This radical transition has created today’s moving cities, moving fusion cuisines and the chefs who transform the grace of earth into art. In the first panel of the day, we will discuss the developing culinary culture and tastes that mankind has been looking for since its existence. 15 September Friday 14:00 - 15:00
SANAT VE MİMARLIK: BOŞLUKTA / MEKANDA HAREKET ART & ARCHITECTURE: MOVEMENT IN SPACE Space finds a place for itself as a subject in art, especially in the recent years. In terms of architecture, spaces and masses as its opposite, shape the city and architectural spaces. This panel will focus on the new architectural space and different eras of design, after our perception is shifted by time known as the fourth dimension. The human movement, as part of artistic creation in the new millennium will also be discussed in relation to the city, garden and community. 15 September Friday 15:30 - 16:30

Daniele Sigalot
Oranienburger Str. 32 Heckmann-Höfe 10117 Berlin, Germany
The center of Daniele Sigalot’s research spins around the ambiguity between the perceptions of the materials he uses and their actual nature, thus creating a sublime contrast that is the core of his entire production. Sigalot’s most recognisable works are certainly the massive paper planes installations. Upon first glance, the individual plane components of the installation are made out of paper, an ephemeral material. In actuality, they are each carefully hand-crafted out of metal. Together, with these fleets that Daniele Sigalot has literally flown around the world, he has installed and exhibited his planes in more than thirty cities to the four corners of the globe.

Sahand Hesamiyan Sahand Hesamiyan’s practice explores contemporary sculptural directions, which take cue from Islamic architecture and present ancient concepts of transcendence in a modern context. Linking science and geometry to the abstract nature of spirituality, his work is a reflective attempt to discover the esoteric nature of Iranian culture through the dissection of its architectural forms. Sahand often exposes the superficial layers of the structures to offer a look towards the inward and sacred, by juxtaposing the external embellished Iranian architecture with its abandoned equivalent, transparent and accessible in its carcass form. Sahand Hesamiyan’ın sanatsal süreci; İslami mimariden ilham alıp, bunu modern bağlamlara yansıtarak, çağdaş heykel alanını incelemekten geçmektedir. Bilim ve geometriyi ruhani dünyanın soyutluğu ile ilişkilendirerek, Iran kültürünün ezoterik doğasını mimari yapıları açarak keşfetmektedir. Sahand eserlerinde, yapıların yüzeysel katmanlarını ortaya çıkartmak adına kutsal ve kapalı yapıları, Iran kültürünün süslenmiş dış mimarisi ile tezat yapmaktadır.

Nemanja Nikolić
Galerie Dix9 19 rue des Filles du Calvaire, 75003 Paris, France
Conceptually and formally, the practice of Nemanja Nikolić (b. 1987, Serbia) is connected to the mediums of drawing, painting and animation. His specific and conceptual approach is partly linked with his fascination with the seventh art which can be seen in most of his works. Those works of apparent simplicity are part of a complex process and thus open up a multiplicity of readings.

Gerald Chukwuma Gerald Chukwuma (b. 1973) is one of Nigeria’s fastest rising contemporary artists noted for his intricately crafted wood-slate sculptures. Using a multitude of techniques, his unique approach to burning, chiseling, and painting common materials captures a richly layered history imbedded with personal and political meaning. The use of traditional Uli and Nsibidi symbols links his work to the Nsukka art tradition which expanded and modernised the Igbo cultural aesthetic. Meanwhile, the transformation of object into highly detailed artworks roots him firmly in the contemporary moment of rapid environmental and ecological change.

If the unity of body and psyche creates the existence, the collaboration of concept and technique creates the quality of an artwork. From my point of view, the idea should search new alternative ways of form. Therefore, I don’t avoid using different forms while I am producing my works. I believe that the forms, I use reflect my ideas hence figures are in the centre of my works. My works are usually related to a ‘problem’ and problems are related to humans. I like to embody these problems into the figures I use. While figures multiply, the problem also gets bigger and the effect of the works on the audience gets stronger. This vastness of figures creates a systematic, almost transforms the work into a monument.

Magda Skupinska At the heart of Magda Skupinska’s practice lies a conceptual and sensory dimension that investigates the tangible and delicate quality of organic materials. Skupinska integrates the “accidental” in aesthetics by exploring the duration, volatility and development of degradable materials such as spices and fruits, in order to encourage an engagement with the environmental issues caused by human activity. Temporality plays an indispensable role on the diverse possibilities of texture, colour and hues created in her works, as well as the gradual changes that these substances undergo. The unpredictable nature of these alternations facilitates the means for each work to have its own energy and life, which plays a vital role in the artist’s oeuvre, where the attention is brought back to the beauty of ageing and the preciousness of temporality.

Oksana Mas Born and educated in the Ukraine, Oksana Mas is a creative visionary whose work spans sculpture, installation, architectural design, painting, drawing, and photography. Fascinated with questions of science and religion, her work blurs the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, relational art and neo-expressionism, biomorphism and digital art.

Lili Cohen Prah-Ya
T: +972 542330511
Lili Cohen Prah-Ya lives and works in Tel Aviv. She engages in drawing, painting, sculpting and installation. The point of departure in her central body of work is drawing that is somewhere between the line and the stain, executed on various supports and in varying sizes ranging from the intimate to large-scale installations. The concept underlying most of the works is a kind of dialogue with patches of color, and the tension created between the image and its deciphering. The images appearing in the works are mostly echoes of feminine portraits and nature versus different patches of material, stains that do not strive to portray reality. The quick work pace is aimed at depicting, very much like a sensitive seismograph, a changing mood and state of mind.

Lili Cohen Prah-Ya

Situated on a hill overlooking the Çoruh Valley in Bayburt, the Baksı Museum offers fresh proposals to the world of art, and asks probing questions about the dependency of contemporary art on the center as well as about the relationship between culture and production, art and crafts, the traditional and the contemporary. The Baksı Museum presents, under one roof and side by side, a fine collection of contemporary art, a large collection of folk art with examples of all main genres, and original examples of local handicrafts. The basic goals of the Baksı Culture and Art Foundation are revitalizing a cultural environment which has been shattered by heavy migration, developing a project which will contribute to the sustainability of the cultural memory, and setting up shops oriented toward the employment of women in the region.

It was founded by collectors Sevda and Can Elgiz as the first contemporary art museum in Turkey in 2001. As public contemporary art museums and/or foundations didn’t exist at that time, this privately-owned, non-profit institution took on the mission to support the development of contemporary art with an international identity in a 2000 m2 space open to the public. Formerly known as Proje4L, the space functioned as an experimental platform for young, up-andcoming artists and curators. The Elgiz Museum houses the family’s collection and hosts dynamic, temporary exhibitions and educational programmes. The “private collection museum” is situated at Maslak within which its open-air terrace provides an exhibition platform for sculptors and land-art projects.

The art space targets both the art audience and the institutions’ own students studying art, design and communication. As all exhibitions and performances are a daily routine of their practice, the space inherently serves as an open laboratory of observation, research and allocation. Furthermore, Plato Art Space encourages production of contemporary artworks, supports young upcoming artists and focuses on new presentation techniques. The gallery space also acts as a supplementary role in all exhibition designs. ABOUT PLUGIN
PLUGIN HAKKINDA
With the ever increasing speed of change and the number of images we are subjected to every day, it has become harder than ever for the artists to catch up with the times and capture the imagination of the masses. New media claims to do just that. And while doing so it transforms the art audience and the art institutions themselves. As new media continues its experimentation with novel ways of doing art, Plugin will continue experimenting with better ways to present new media.
EXHIBITION NATURA NOVA Natura Nova represents new media’s questions/answers pertaining to today and tomorrow of our world. Art has always been obsessed with representing nature in an effort to make sense of the world and the life itself. These presentations have taken various forms over the ages, developing in relation with the changing times; but the fascination with nature itself and the quest to capture it best remained the same. The exhibition will try to present the current dialogue between our new and evolving world and the new media -the art genre that aims to capture this novelty at its best. All the artworks in the selection will provide new and unique answers from the artists to the problem of what constitutes a representation of nature.
CURATORS Ceren and Irmak Arkman have been organizing international festivals, screenings, exhibitions, live AV events, workshops and seminars in the field of digital arts and design both in Turkey and abroad since 2005. Starting off as a non-profit organization called Kurye Video, they formed the most formidable video archive in Istanbul and organized various festivals and held the first AR exhibition of the world in 2012. Also, they developed Contra which is the first contemporary Turkish artist fair to take place outside of Turkey. Their collaboration with Plugin, on the other hand, is nothing new: they had developed the original concept with CI back in 2013, running the section for two consecutive years. Now they are back for a special exhibition: “Natura Nova”
Plugin Sponsor

An historic agreement between the Science Museum Group (SMG) and the V&A is set to create the world’s foremost collection on the art of photography. More than 400,000 objects from SMG’s threemillion-strong photography collection, held at the National Media Museum, will be transferred to the V&A. These photographs will join the V&A’s existing collection of 500,000 photographs to create an International Photography Resource Centre. The new Centre will provide the public with a worldclass facility to access this consolidated collection, which will become the single largest collection on the art of photography in the world. The decision represents a reunion for some of these images, which were once part of a single collection at the 19th century South Kensington Museum before it divided into the V&A and the Science Museum. The collection being transferred encompasses exquisite vintage prints, the world’s first negative, unique daguerreotypes and early colour photographs, as well as important albums, books, cameras and the archives of major photographers. At its heart is the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) Collection, which charts the invention and development of photography over the last two centuries. Once transferred, the collection will be stored,

EARLIER THIS year Chinese archaeologists excavated a large treasure trove from a 17th-century shipwreck from a river bed near Meishan City, where two rivers meet in Sichuan province. It was in 2005 that the first evidence started to emerge when construction workers pulled several silver bullion ingots out of the gravel from the river bed. In 2010, the site was declared a protected area, although looters had managed to access the site. It was at this time that a looter, an experienced diver, had discovered a gold seal in the shape of a tiger in the river, dated to 1643, which bore the title ‘Grand Marshal of Yongchang’, which he sold illegally to a collector for around US$2 million. After the initial discovery, more and more objects from this particular period began to appear on the black market and the police picked up this abnormal activity, and in 2015, arrested various looters and traffickers and recovered thousands of
silver and gold coins and other objects from the site. The wreck, which dates to circa 1646, was carrying more than 10,000 pieces of gold, silver and bronze coins, ingots, jewels and weapons. The gold ingots have inscriptions that are still clearly visible that includes the name of the infamous rebel from the Ming dynasty – Zhang Xianzhong. Zhang’s nickname was the Yellow Tiger. In 1644, the year of the fall of the Ming dynasty, Zhang Xianzhong had become part of the rebel army after deserting the Chongzhen Emperor’s army in the 1630s. He was known as a bloodthirsty tyrant and finally conquered the area of Sichuan, made Chengdu his capital and crowned himself as the first king of the Daxi dynasty. However, by 1645 his empire was weakened and the Emperor’s army was on the rise. In 1646, he fled Sichuan and, according to legend, 1,000 boats were loaded with treasure to set sail for Shaanxi. Zhang’s forces
clashed with those of the now superior Emperor’s army in battle and it is believed he died at this time. Wang Wei, one of the archaeologists, commented on the dig that there is direct and compelling evidence to now identify the area where this famous last battle was fought. This dig started in earnest in January when they increased the size of the excavation works to a 10,000 square metre section of the river and dug roughly five metres down into the river bed. To date they have recovered over 10,000 items. ‘The items are extremely valuable and are of great significance for research into the political, economic, military and social lives of the Ming dynasty,’ said Li Boqian, an archaeologist from Peking University. The local government is believed to be considering building a museum near the site to preserve and protect the valuable findings and to tell the story of the Ming-dynasty rebel Zhang Xianzhong.
