I Am Love Reviewed
by Jonathan Rosenbaum
by Megan Ratner
The seeming displacement of the theatrical viewing experience by the home theatrical one is cause for alarm in certain quarters. Rosenbaum argues that the "theatrical experience" has its own drawbacks and compromises, and that more options create 15 opportunities to encourage viewership of films that are otherwise difficultto see.

The Best DVD Audio Commentaries
No One Knows About Persian Cats
by DouglasPratt
Audio commentaries have been around since the LaserDisc era in the early 1980s, but some talk is cheap. Pratt, who has been on the home-theater scene since that time, picks some of his favorites, ones where filmmakers and film experts "present their work in its best light, or to explain and embellish the context of its creation." Those with the gift of gab-Ridley Scott, Francis Ford Coppola, and Peter Cowie. 17 Home theater is unearthing a hidden world of films never intended for theatrical exhibition, a catch-all category that includes certain kinds of documentaries and newsreels, avant-garde cinema, industrials, and propaganda. Compensating for the skimpy packaging is a robust amount of material, as Sterritt explores African, 22 American and European documentaries, literary bios, and avant-garde cinema.
Movies it la MOD by James Neibaur The waves 'of extras-laden catalog releases on standard DVDfrom the Hollywood majors have slowed to a trickle. Enter the Warner Archive and Manufacturing on Demand (MOD), which makes available online previously un released titles on DVD-R, from AI Jolson vehicles to Jodie Foster in 1980's Carny. Other studios have dipped their toes into the same waters, which are muddied by high prices, uneven quality, and other concerns, but may be the last best chance to open up studio vaults. 28
Make Way for Blu-ray by JenniferA. Wood Great picture, great sound-the only thing that's lacking for the hot high-definition format is great movies, besides today's blockbusters. But there are reasons for aficionados to go Blu, as the status quo is beginning to change. Falling prices for players, the durability of the format, and increased demand by viewers is bringing the likes of Antonioni's Red Desert, Godard's Contempt, and Mackendrick's The 32 Ladykillers to a market dominated by Twilight and The Hangover.

A Death in the Family: An Inteaviewwith Mia Hansen-Leve byRichardPorton
The suicideof Frenchfilm producer Humbert Balsan is the real-life mystery behind the fictional The Father of My Children, which also delves into the conundrums of filmmaking, cinephilia, and family ties. "I wanted to make a film that gives you both cruelty and the beauty of life, the happiness along with the sadness," says Hansen-LllIve, who knew 10 Balsan, and intended her movie as a tribute to the art cinema he championed.

The codirector of this documentary about Daniel Ellsberg found in his subject a film that went beyond his leaking of the Pentagon Papers to the press, a turning point in the Vietnam War. Relating Ellsberg's story as a political thriller, Goldsmith retraced the steps 37 that led the MIT professor to his fateful decision, including a painful family history.

Welcome. With his Palme d'Or for the visionary UncleBoonmeeWho CanRecallHis PastLives,
Thailand's Apichatpong Weerasethakul (left with Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux) joins a select band of Asian directors to have won the award - including, of course, this month's cover star Kurosawa Ak:ira(far left, and P.32),whose centenary this month we mark with an I I-page special. As a counterweight to the array of fresh talent revealed in our in-depth Cannes report (p.I 6),we offer two more elder statesmen, both still producing unique new work - Alain Resnais (P.44)and two-time Palme d'Or-winner Francis Ford Coppola (far left with Kurosawa and George
Lucason the set of Kagemusha, and p.28).Throw in rediscovered gems from the shifting sands of late-I 960s and 1970SBritish cinema (p.I2 and p.26)
and you've got a rich bouillabaisseworthy ofthe Cote d'Azur itself. Tuck in. -0-NickJames REVIEWS
