“I have been drawing since I was a kid. I studied at Escola Massana in Barcelona and when I was 16, I started working as an apprentice in Taller de Escenografia Castells Planas in St. Agnès de Malanyanes, where I learned from Josep and Jordi Castells to love scenography and the backdrop trade. Regarding illustration, I have never stopped experimenting. I worked as a freelancer for various clients and gradually I have been heading to the world of painting and creating my own work.”

“I have always seen myself as an image maker. My work evolves from pure photography to objects and movies, out of necessity. Lately, I have been exploring the idea that photography is not a question of color or form, but a matter of plane/ surface. Each photograph will generate an image, a two-dimensional representation. This image is to be printed, viewed or projected on a surface, not necessarily a flat one. I want to explore this photographic support with my work, its variations, and impacts on how we perceive a particular image. On ‘ZEN photo-object’ I have photographed crumpled paper, printed those photographs and crumpled the prints between glass planes into a closed circuit.”

Burnt wood: charcoal has been used for millennia, and has depth and a subtle color range that is warm and moody. “The diary of my life is recorded in glass. I use hot glass forming techniques. A very important aspect of my work is improvisation: every time a new, unseen composition is created. Michail Parlamas’ implementation of religious and symbolic references attributes a universal tone to his paintings allowing thus for personal interpretation. Apparent and disparate elements co-exist on the painted surface of his work, bringing together elements from ancient Greek mythology with the equivalent of Sumerian and Hindu mythoi, as well as the popular and mainstream sub-cultures. Eventually, the creative drive of the artist is reinforced by the need to “unearth” the past, thus discovering his own personal truths. Following his Fine Art Masters degree at Central Saint Martins, Michail went on to successfully complete a Doctorate degree in Fine Art at the University of East London.

“I had been musing about an odd question that became the origin of Beach Game: Which would travel higher? A bullet or a released balloon. Those objects would fill out a simple narrative featuring a man lying on the beach with his arms outstretched. The body language of complete surrender is given some added complexity and more interpretive depth with the addition of objects in his hands. Each object serves as a foil for the other, and each contributes to the theme of a kind of offering to the great beyond. While the yellow balloon is hopeful and childlike, the gun adds a necessary darker philosophical counterweight, particularly in a scene depicting a beautiful sunny day at the beach. It was important to me that the gun not be too obvious so it is revealed in the man’s more distant, foreshortened arm, and slightly elevated from the sand in a subtly ambiguous way. Because of the horizontal figure, I immediately thought of Manet’s Dead Toreador. Manet anchored the corner of his composition with a pink cape, and I decided to include a purple beach towel and beach mat in my painting to resolve the bottom right corner. I chose to make a very compressed landscape with a low-to-the-ground perspective and I used all the peripheral elements—the moon, wispy clouds, an outcropping of trees, the foam on the waves, and the bicycle tracks—all to keep the viewer’s eye moving and achieve an overall balance.”

“I fell in love with found object sculpture I saw in San Francisco Bay in the 1960s; the work was alive and beautiful! I have shown my work in Italy and Germany as well as the USA, using found objects in Collage and Tapestry as well as Sculpture to create thoughtful, interesting works of art. Recently I was asked to be featured artist in a film about artist’s lives hosted by Artrepreneur and Bert Wolfe, to be aired April 25th, 2019 on worldwide PBS. Sleep paralysis is a common phenomenon occurring in between wakefulness and sleep, in which the body becomes immobile. This realization of being paralyzed in bed causes the individual to become plagued by terror-laden hallucinations. These frightening experiences infect the senses yet the ability to move or escape is not possible as the body itself remains frozen throughout the episode. Bruno finds a means of subduing the haunting of his night terrors through creative expression. Recreating scenes from his hallucinations has allowed him to seize control of the danger and confront his antagonists on his own terms. Bruno models for multiple characters within each work by using a composite layering technique. Handmade props and costumes lend a hand to the symbolism portrayed within each piece.Â
