“As a fledgling illustrator in Brooklyn during the 1980s, I took on any project thrown my way. Eventually, I zeroed in on editorial work and soon scored assignments at publications like The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and The Village Voice. Since the early 2000s, I’ve concentrated on gallery work with an editorial, satirical slant; essentially larger oil paintings with conceptual content reminiscent of my illustration years. Lampooning politicians, pundits or spiritual leaders who specialize in alternative facts, manufactured outrage, false equivalents, convoluted conspiracy theories and tunnel-visioned tribalism (whew) is my form of protest and provides a satisfying outlet.”

If we could remain silent, watching the immortality of the silence of an image, we would understand the instant lived; our silent, hidden present. An image that is immersed in a timeless eternity with a memory that belongs only to the beholder as the intimate setting of a time that will not return but transcends into eternity, just remaining there with its own light.”

My projects reveal the thoughts of humanity, represented in actions which I question, and which have a connection in my subconscious, since they drive me to explore the beauty behind it, to transform it into another possibility. Geometry and color inspire me for it. I seek the origin of that state of happiness behind what I question and experience. I rebuild stories in flat color environments, to show the other face of chaos. What I do is reinforce the positive feelings and download them on my photos. It is my way of responding to them.”

“A photo, a fingerprint, a signature, and DNA are all methods we use to identify a person, but they are just a means to match a name or face to an individual, not to describe who they are or to translate their identity. For as long as I have been using portraiture as the main focus of my paintings, it is not the identity or recognizable face in which I use to describe my portraits, but more of a blueprint of how I approach portraiture. Many levels go into what makes a person’s portrait. It’s a fabric of many layers, intertwined with a person’s favorite foods, music, and movies. I have used all of these concepts in building my paintings.”

“The goal here is to utilize the whole surface of the support, challenging the viewer’s perception of negative space. Essentially divisionist, the figure/composition is woven into the fabric of the plane and the space warps into the figure. In the painting process, repetitive, almost automatic, application of the cross-hatched lines allow the subconscious the opportunity to direct the composition. There is a tension between the desire to hide vs. the need to reveal, conflicting within the human mind. As far as drawings, I worked with ink with the same approach, because of the fine lines unique to this medium and the texture that arises from multiple built-up layers of cross-hatched lines, allowed me to focus on light and texture and the feel of the drawing ended up being quite different from the paintings.”

My handpainted collages depict elements of the landscape at any one unique moment of time. A bird lands and in an instant, takes off again. Sunlight falls on flowers lighting them up and then, in a heartbeat, disappears behind a cloud. A flower blooms and a moment later the petals are swept away by a sudden gust of wind. Light dominates in all of my work and with its strength constantly changes the landscape giving a sense of calmness and serenity but not for long as behind it lurks a threat. This threat is the forces of nature which alter familiar images to something new even if it doesn’t last. Intertwined Pencil on paper 8 x 11 in.
Intertwined Close your eyes, take a breath and sink below the surface. Listen carefully to the absence of everything. The water has a sound, gentle and subtle. The rumbling of the calm after a storm. It fills your mind, the pressure of it strong but soothing like you’re becoming a part of the water. Your hair moves with the ripples, twirling around you. Becoming vines of seaweed or soft feathery fins brushing against your face, your body, your mind. Connected to those feathery arms are tiny fish, gently carrying you away from all your thoughts and troubles. There’s a scent of roses that can be tasted on the water as if blooms grow entangled within the feathery fins. Everything is intertwined to become this new world. The fish twirl around one another like tiny dancers moving towards each other against the tide. Tendrils of themselves twist and turn into the shadows, letting light peak through and bring the image of roses between the lovelorn swimmers. The roses are fragile, gentle things, swaying in the water. Their velvet buds release bubbles as they open, creating another layer to the surreal world beneath the surface. Even the water has substance here, as gentle shadows play alongside the fish and wild blooms. It is an oasis. A place of peace and strange eerie noiselessness. Everything in this world is entwined with everything else and their tangled existence is harmoniously balanced. It’s a rarity. A moment in time where really nothing else matters except seeing that moment without anything else getting in the way. Soon though, the need to breathe consumes you and this world fades as darkness fills your vision. Struggling for air you break away from the world you had become intertwined within and gasp in air. The moment is lost. That world destroyed. The vines and fins were only the bedraggled split ends of your hair and the blooms are gone, only the smell of overpowering rose soap remains. Even the bubbles have dissipated. You’re alone in the bath, naked, and the cold is seeping into your exposed flesh. With it comes the troubles of your life. You try to escape under the surface again, but that world and moment is lost. Only the stark contrast of reality remains where nothing is intertwined and you are alone. Again.

In this sense, the paper (recycled) is not just the support for paint and graphite but has become the drawn line itself. The edges, torn, ripped, cut or otherwise are a vital part of these installations. The ripped line, the highlighted edges are also a form of drawing. “The exciting thing in photography, for me, is the infinity of motifs. Unlike in painting, the depiction is not a composition of one’s own imagination or phantasy but the reproduction of a single, tiny moment in the inexhaustible, multifaceted repertoire of life. The art in photography is to “see” a motif and to interpret the latter in one’s own way.”

Within the shadow box frames are mythical landscape ink drawings embellished with actual meteorite fragments. “As bodies enter the water, not only do they enter a place where gravity’s effect is altered, but they also alter the light. Water moves, light shatters and scatters, then returns to placid. Whenever smooth it can mirror a tree, a building or a boat; when disturbed these images abstract, become unrecognizable. One minute we see our own reflection, the next we are simply line and color. In sharing the elusive, meditative beauty of water and swimming through photography, I offer viewers a chance to reflect without getting their hair wet.”

My studio frames in all my work are with mid-century wood bars. My work is a product of my visual perceptions, both conscious and unconscious and that is the language from my nerve system. A fixed element in all my works is my dyslexia. Wave on the Coyotes, Arizona (From the series: The 4 Elements) Pigments and mixed media on canvas 130 x 130 cm
The Pigmentmaster has developed a special method that incorporates a variety of mediums to produce intense color effects which shimmer and radiate from the canvas. The achieved textures produce a weathered time-tested appearance to the application of paint. Other works are approached with graduations of a particular hue, to allow for the richest expression of the dominant color. Geometric forms and gestural lines are scrawled into or on the top of the paint, evoking both modern and ancient art forms. Pure pigments are used in combination with unusual painting media. The pigment works have been exhibited and sold to private collectors worldwide. The artist works in Berlin and Spain.
