“My painting technique can be compared to searching for images in the clouds. I begin with a blank canvas and as I layer on the initial coat of paint to create textures and colours, I start to see shapes and figures emerge. This is the foundation from which my paintings develop. With the freedom, this open-minded approach brings, my painting takes on a life of its own. From the images I initially see, my paintings take on stories, issues, and experiences to which others can relate.”

“I create mysterious, multi-sensorial and almost metaphysical works of art. I play with different materials and colours, and yet my art is never a pure aestheticism, but rather a code through which I can communicate my ideas. “This painting is an epitome of gestures reflecting emotions exhibited by the visual characters. The blue hands may confuse the audience as to whom they belong. They may be the woman’s hands stretched to touch the top of her own shoulders, or the silhouetted man’s, in front of her who is attempting to enjoy a dance with her. A sfumato is in effect to soften the lines and edges.”

“Silvia, 56 years old, sexually abused as a child, a single mother at age fifteen without an education, worked to raise her son in another city. However, she married at age 18, and continued to work while studying, she eventually became a quartermaster in a school and had three more children. Despite all the motherhood challenges, Silvia continued to study and got a master’s degree in Higher Education. Later, she went through a serious car accident and had her first surgical operation, which was to reconstruct part of her genital organs. After a few years, she underwent an emergency operation to remove her ovary because she was losing too much blood and giving her anemia. Silvia then suffered a partial facial paralysis that caused her a lot of pain. In 2020, she underwent kidney surgery but the doctors thought she was not going to survive and a priest gave her the holy oils. She thought she was going to follow her brother and father who had passed away a few years ago. Although she is still in a lot of pain, she continues in her constant struggle for life, always alive ... always a warrior!”

“This piece is part of my ‘Pandemic Series’, which encompasses the timeline of major developments while also speaking of the psychology of humanity during the Covid 19 crisis. A major component in this work is the black line drawing that is at the forefront of a rather happy, uplifting environment. This black image is an ambiguous image. It can be a flower with petals gloriously blossoming or it can very well be a sinister ‘bug’ waiting to create another crisis. Will there be light?”

“I describe my art as expressive-abstract. The realisation of artistic projects, particularly the implementation of something abstract into something specific, delights and fascinates me. The painting ‘Friends’ points out the importance of friendship, part of the social environment, especially in difficult times.”

Warm Summer Night Acrylic on canvas 24 x 30 in.
“When I moved to the West, I felt called to a new artistic path in a new place. By painting from my gut instead of my head, with no concern for what the paintings meant or whether they looked like something, I was able to free up an inner person. I began to have a more abstract way of seeing the world. When the work is going well, I am caught up in the doing of my art. I hope that the viewer will find something meaningful or is moved in some way. If so we have communicated.”

“As a teenager I was powerful, convinced I could do and be anything, always advocating women’s rights and equality. I studied and worked in Cape Town as a Fashion Designer before marriage. It was made clear that my role should be that of the supportive wife. It took years of hard work to regain faith in my capabilities and confidence in being me. Part of this growing process was learning about energy and how our beliefs and feelings, as well as our experiences, can limit our lives.”

“I chose a cat’s eye view of the human body for this work. Cats are not concerned with perfection, they celebrate being, they do not suffer from self-judgement as do their human owners. They waste no time or effort feeling regret or shame or embarrassment for what they cannot control. They bask in the enjoyment of what God has given them and take pleasure from knowing they are perfect as they are. Our lives would be far more peaceful if we adapted a cat’s sense of acceptance of its own skin.”

Tree Mosaic Acrylic on paper 12 x 16 in.
“I began painting under the guidance of Lorna Ritz, who helped me record what I saw in the hills and orchards of western Massachusetts. After moving to Roanoke, Virginia, I painted oils but also worked on mosaics, and slowly a painting style evolved that also expressed the spirit of mosaic. Though my paintings are grounded in the natural world, they use images composed of forms with clear-cut edges.”

Deborra Marshall Bohrer Finding Where the Crawdads Sing Acrylic on board 12 x 12 in. “Art is the reflection of the life that resides in all of us. It is the wooden spoon that stirs emotion. It calms the soul or curdles your blood. A piece of art can be a gentle friend, a stern companion, or a way to escape or revere “normal”. Working with a larger format, I experience a sense of belonging with my painting. There is an intimacy that I feel with my palette knife, adding layer upon layer, waiting for the moment the image emerges and the wonderful recognition, ahh......There you are!”
