Heinz Marzohl

The Bull of «Saintes Maries», 2022 Acrylic on canvas 75 x 100 cm

From 1974 to 2008, Heinz Marzohl owned and directed a renowned company for lettering technology, digital printing, and graphic design in Switzerland. In 2008, after 34 years, he handed over the company to his two daughters.

For his professional activity, Marzohl designed countless brand logos, lettering concepts, and graphics for shopping centers and industrial buildings. His profound knowledge of graphic design, typography, reprography, serigraphy, materials and color theory, provided an invaluable springboard to enter the world of fine art painting. In his profession, letters and logos mostly consisted of geometric shapes. In painting, experiences and feelings are now depicted with vivid, evocative lines and shapes.

The search for inspiring examples led to works by Kandinsky, Marc, Jawlenski, Klee and Macke, who had created groundbreaking works in the artist group “The Blue Rider” in the early 20th century. Marzohl’s aim was not to copy these works. The key was to fathom the thinking and feeling that had led to these great paintings. Another important source of inspiration was the intensive study of prehistoric cave paintings. These primitive people worked with the flickering light of fire and painted only by memory. Already, 30,000 years ago, a spiritual transformation of what was seen was the basis for amazing drawings.

Later works of Heinz Marzohl were inspired by cracks and shadings on rocky cliffs of stormy seacoasts. After many years, this search for living lines and forms has led to an independent, unmistakable visual language. Painted on canvas with beautiful color compositions, the archaic traces became enchanting, evocative pictorial worlds.

For Marzohl, abstracted lines, shape and colors represent memories. The more the artist dealt with abstract painting, the more he is fascinated with the spirituality behind it, focusing on the mysterious; the soulful. For him, a spiritual transformation of an experience gives the images an enigmatic charisma.

“At the center of my art are people. I love drawing humans, because each one of us, no matter how normal we may appear, is unique and crazy and weird, and that’s amazing. I love to draw or paint something out of the ordinary, something different, something crazy. I love to portray the concepts or ideas that the human mind experiences or creates in a visual way through my art, often using a contrast of color vs. no color to accomplish this.”

“My career as a professional artist and fine arts educator has been the primary focus of my life for almost 45 years. As a contemporary landscape painter, my work is a conscious/intuitive play of mood and light, with oil and acrylic works depicting seasonal New England scenes with a bold, tactile expressionist palette with a variety of tools and techniques, which blur and blend the lines of abstraction and realism.”

“In the creative process, these works are questioned within the parameters of contemporary logic. My biggest motivation is the breakage resulting from the burning of the clay that makes the ceramic inflexible and I move it in a playful, experimental way. The digital, animated installations are different. They must be displayed in looping and with the loudest sound, as the sound definitely confirms their movements. The movement and silence of each work is important to be observed.”

Mysterious Ways

Acrylic on canvas 24 x 48 in.

“A unique application of texture and intriguing mix of acrylic colour on canvas, defines my artwork and is used to convey my connection with nature. I use these elements to create depth and dimensions that are tactile, bringing my mountain and wildlife images to life, in ways that invite you to reach out and touch them, as if at that moment, you can experience that same feeling which inspired the painting.

I am drawn to painting mountain scapes of hikes that are exceptional and memorable to me. I strive to find a balance between an artistic impression and reality, which gives me freedom with my brush to lose myself in the moment of recreating the experience rather than replicating the details of a photograph.

I am also passionate about painting wildlife in ways that express connections to people that have had an impact on my life in various ways. The animals I choose always capture the essence of my personal relationships and memories that I hope you can relate to and savour.

My introduction into the world of art has been a whirlwind. Recently, three works were recognized with Silver & Bronze awards in international Art competitions. I am now a featured artist at Art Gallery Kimberly in British Columbia as well as the Gust Gallery in Waterton National Park.”

Rachel

for her Children

“This painting describes the Midrash (Jewish traditional oral study of the Bible) that says that when the people of Israel went into exile they passed near the grave of our Matriarch Rachel. The soul of Rachel, our foremother, sees them from above and weeps to God to have mercy on her children. The Holy One, blessed be He, answers her: “Prevent your voice from crying and your eyes from tears, in your merits your children will come back to their land.” You might ask, what merits did Rachel have that were so great? Rachel was the woman who gave up her own personal success and happiness in life just so her sister, Leah, would not be embarrassed and ashamed.”

“I am inspired by architecture, particularly industrial and cultural heritage. I am fascinated by perspectives, precision and colour, to create in an eclectic way a strange environment for people in historical and often ruinous buildings. My work is influenced by the paintings of M.C. Escher, Carel Willink and Edward Hopper. My style is realistic, but I like to avoid photorealism. Despite the images’ realism, they maintain an air of fantasy.”

Enso Transformed

The artwork aims to connect viewers to wonders and synchronicities in life, illustrating it with a true story of magic on canvas. It was inspired by Enso, a circular symbol from Japanese Zen calligraphy, also known as the Zen Circle or Circle of Enlightenment. Created in black ink on white background, empty yet full, infinite and complete, the calligrapher’s hand draws it in one breath, with no corrections permitted afterward. It is the ultimate exercise of achieving a higher consciousness state where the symbol brushes itself, with little effort and control by the artist.

When this Enso was created in one go, it manifested as a snake—without the artist’s intention or awareness. For over a month, colors and effects were added around it. When the work was finished and revealed, the resemblance to the snake was pointed out to the stunned artist. Coincidentally, the work is reminiscent of the ancient Ouroboros symbol, a circular snake eating its own tail (as a symbol of life and death). Yet in this case, the snake is no longer eating its tail, representing a “wake up” moment in life.

“In my kind of painting, there is no sketch. My creative act is the antithesis of brain work. In such a way that sometimes I get surprised with my own work. It is during this process that ideas emerge. The muse, when it appears, is in the act of creation. The idea comes during the process. It is the unconscious working in total freedom. This is a world of NONREPRESENTATION; an art that has lost its forms. It’s a painting that has to do with emotions, dreams and memories.”

“This painting is my (abstract) representation of the Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv, Ukraine. This monument commemorates the independence of Ukraine in 1991 and is, remarkably, still standing today. During the onset of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the monument was included in a list of heritage sites to be fortified against shelling and bombing. It was removed from the list owing to cost concerns and its height, making it difficult to defend.”

Kerstin’s internationally exhibited and multiple award-winning paintings convey her artistic message

“Art of profound unleashing”, with which she inspires the art scene worldwide. In Kerstin’s deeply layered abstractions, the experimental interplay of color and texture plays a crucial role, resulting in an emotional “optical eruption”. The reduced superimposition of horizontal and vertical layer changes catches the viewers’ eyes from the depth. Kerstin Sokoll is reinventing perspective!

Michael Frank Stitt スティット マイケル is an Australian artist and music composer. The narrative conveyed in his paintings is a reverence and celebration for Nature. Mountains, forests and the natural elements of his landscapes are portrayed as the most important elements of the painting, aiming for both the painter and viewer to meditate on the natural order of the landscape. At the heart of his Sumi-e works is the desire to achieve both the Zen philosophy and the Japanese notion of mono no aware (the pathos of things), and wabi-sabi (the acceptance of transience and imperfection).

The moon glows the same, in the sky and on the pond. Only Rikugi-en changes. In the Seasons, People come and go.

The screen panels were inspired by many visits by the artist to Rikugi-en gardens in Tokyo. The concept is inspired by the Japanese poet, Matsuo Bashō (1644-1694) but written by Michael in Japanese. The poem reads: Michael F. Stitt Ph.D ▫ Spotlight 30 ▫ 140 ▫ 月は同じように輝き、 空にも池にも。 六義園だけ変わります。 シーズンズでは、 人々は行き来します。

The poem and the triptych are based on the dichotomy of time: the eternal and the temporal. The screens display a visual narrative of the timelessness of the moon and its reflection on Rikugi-en’s ornamental pond. This contrasted with the changing seasons, and the temporal movements of people who briefly visit the gardens: hence, who come and go from the gardens.

“What time is it now? Everyday we have to win time, catch a ride, and rush to work. I’m a very punctual person, which is a form of politeness. However, I am afraid of time because time passes slowly and it makes people feel indifferently nervous. I feel that time is like fragments, piece by piece. The memory only stays in a certain period, a certain period of a happy time. Time is like a smile, keep an impression.”

“Where great forces mature and express themselves in their highest violence, there are the times of art.” This sentence by the art writer Wilhelm Heinse is valid for me in three ways: 1. it is the forces of the “inner artistic urge” that push to practice art; 2. it is the forces that have to be “invested” for making art and 3. it is these the forces that are “released in the creative process”. This artistic maxim of the “Sturm und Drang” applies to my self-expression.”

“Art is communication between the artist and the viewer. When my work speaks to the viewer in a personal way, apart from my intentions when I created it, I consider it successful. My work uses images that are not usually specific but express some reaction I have had to an experience. I use color, shape and line to create that impression. My hope is that the viewer will find their own story in the painting. I was once told that a painting is not complete until it is seen.”

With intention and sincerity, Shir Zalcman’s artwork is a piece of herself. The 37 year old Israeli artist paints to reflect the present moment of her everyday, emotional experience. Mainly using acrylic paint and charcoal mediums, she employs palette knives and brushes to create depth through texture, layering and linework. Choosing a bold color palette, Shir intuitively composes these textural patterns by layering them together to explore the visceral nature of feelings.

“A recurring theme in my paintings is the smile. It represents painful experiences of the past. I have suffered from Myasthenia Gravis (MG) and have faced death. It also has to do with the bitter memories of school days, when I was not allowed to express myself. It was a very painful experience and I seem to have been desperate to live in the future. After treatment, I have been able to think positively and create art that provides healing. I hope it helps someone who has a hard time like me.”
